Afterthatexperience,Jenniferâsbucketwaslookingprettyfull. ButthentheWindsorwomanwasgiventhechancetocuddlea sweetlittlekoala,stillwarmanddrowsyfromhislengthynap.
TheLandDownUnderwasturningtheavidtravelerâsexpectationsoftheworldupsidedown.Clearly,thesmallestoftheseven continentscouldoverflowanybodyâsbucket.

Thefirstorderofthedaywastogetto Australia.âThiswasperhapsthelongest journeywehaveevertaken,âJennifersays. Sheandherhusband,Nic k,flewwith LindaoutofDetroitMetroAirport,caught aconnectioninLosAngelesandfinally, morethan24hoursafterleavinghome, reachedtheirdestination.
âWedecidedtomakethisanadventure anddosomepreandposttours,âJennifer says.Theirstaywouldlasttwoweeks.
âOneofthemostincrediblethingsabout Rotaryisthatitgivesyouachancetomeet andconnectwithpeoplefromallcorners oftheglobe.Throughourinvolvement,we becamedearfriendswithRotariansIanand JenniferScottwholivetwohoursoutside ofSydneyintheBlueMountains.â
Afterdeplaningat6a.m.,thethree Canadiansimmediatelyboardedatrainto theScottsâcommunity.âNottoletgrass growunderourfeet,byten-thirtywebegan afourandahalfhourhikethroughthe WentworthFallsareaoftheBlueMountains,âJenniferchuckles.Themountain terrainsprawlsoveranareaofmorethan 1400sq.km.WentworthFallsareroughly halfwayin.
Partofthehikewasseveralthousand stepsupthesideofamountain.âItwasthe lastthingonearthIthoughtIâdbedoing,â Jenniferadmits.âGoingdownwasactually harderthangoingupbecauseoftheimpact ontheknees.âTheCanadiansâtoilwasrewarded.âThewholecanyonwasbreathtaking.Westumbledontowaterfallsand secretgardens,tuckedawaylikeamovie scene.Wewerespellbound.â
âBecauseitissooffthebeatentrack,it wasalsoveryquiet.Werarelysawanother person.â
Theirhosts,theScotts,insistedontakingtheCanadianstotheirbeachfrontcottageinBerraraBeach,31/2hoursnorthby vehicle.âItwasanabsolutelygorgeous drive,âJenniferenthuses.âWhenwearrived,thatâswhenourfriendssharedwith usthatthisiswherethekangarooshang out.â

TheScottsrelatedhowthekangaroos fledtothesafetyoftheseawhenaforest firerippedthroughBerraraBeachseveral yearsago.Thoughthe6âtallanimalscould swim,theyweretoowearytoreturntoland afterthefirewasout.âNeighbourswent intothewaterandpulledouttheexhausted kangaroos,âJennifersays.
âIhadnoideakangaroosweresucha bucketlistitemformeuntilthatmoment,â Jenniferadmits.âThatcappeditoff.Ididnâtneedtoseeanotherdarnthing.â
However,Australiahadmanymoresurprisesin store.
Exhilarated,theCanadianspreparedto settleintoSydneyOlympicPark,30minutesoutsideofthecity,fortheRotary Internationalconvention.Withmorethan 1.2millionmembersworldwide,everyone lookedforwardtomakingandrenewing friendships.
Jenniferbelievestheannualconventions areâareallygreatwayforpeopletosee theworld,bothfromtheperspectiveof travelingbutalsofrombeinginanenvironmentwhereyouwalkdownahallway andsomeonehasaNigerianheaddresson, andsomeoneiswearingasariandsomeone iswearingakimonoandyourrealizeyou areallthesame,withthesamevisionfor whatwewantourworldtolooklike.â
Theviewfromdownunderwasflip flopped,however,withAustraliaâswintertimeinfullswinginJune.Wintertemperaturesaverageahighof16degreesCelsius, sotodrawtourists,VividSydneywas created.FromMay22ndtoJune8th, 1,430,000peopleattendedthefestivalof light,musican dideasfeaturingover200 localandinternationalartists.TheSydney OperaHouseandothericonicbuildings wereilluminated.âEverysinglenightwas likebeingatthefireworksindowntown Windsor,âJenniferrecalls.

AustraliaâsvariedmarinelifealsoappealedtotheCanadiantravelers.Theyflew northtoPortDouglasandthenventured intotheCoralSeatoexploretheGreatBarrierReef,aWorldHeritageSite.Inaboat withaglassbottomforunderwaterviewing,Jenniferspiedevidenceoftwocyclones thathadpassedthroughafewmonthsearlier.âAlotofthecoralwasreallydamaged. Thatwassad.Thoughtherewerecolourful fisheverywhere,youâdseelittlecoralgraveyardswherestuffgotbeatup.âShewastold itwilltake10to30yearsforthereeftoregeneratewhatithaslost.
Feelingbadlyaboutthereef,Jennifer donnedflippers,maskandsnorkeland slippedintothesea.Ahugeturtlesoon joinedher.Astheyswam togetherforfive minutes,thewomanâsspiritslifted.âIalwaysthoughtoftheGreatBarrierReefasa scaryplacewithsharks.Butitwasajewel. THESTORYOFJAMESCOOPER isafascinatingone.AccordingtoWindsorhistorianandauthor,MartyGervais,he âwasoneofthefewgiantsfromtheprohibitioneratodierich.â
OneofthewealthiestandpowerfulliquorbaronsinCanada, CooperlivedinWalkervilleandasMartywritesinâTheRumrunner,aprohibitionscrapbookâ,whichwaspublishedin 1980:âCooperâsfortunewastiedtotheconsumersâtastefor alcohol.Butinasensehewasneverconsideredabootlegger. Heneverrowedboatsladenwithcratesofwhisky,andhenever stolesilentlyfromWindsorcarryingillicitshipmentsofliquor toDetroitâsblindpigs.âInsteadhefoundloopholesinthe lawandsoldanddeliveredliquortoOntarioresidentsona completelylegalbasis.
CooperwasborninLondonin1874.Afterhighschoolhe workedforseveralrailroadsbeforesettlingintheWindsorDetroitareain1910afterthedeathofhisfirstwifewhohad lefthimasubstantialestate.Heusedthemoneytooperateseveralsaloons,speculatedinrealestateandhelpedrevolutionize farminginEssexCounty.Heboughta105acrefarmnearBelle Riverandtiledthepropertysothatspringplantingcouldstart uptotwoweeksearlierthannormal.Untilthen,cross-ditches weretheonlymeansofdrainage.Cooperbuiltatilingfactory onhisfarm,manufacturingmorethan10,000and20,000 bricksperdayandhesoldthosetilestofarmersatcost.He alsochangedtheegg andpoultryindustryinEssexCounty, organizedorchardandgrapeproduction,introducedtobacco farming,boostedthedairyandcattleindustry,increasedsugar beetyieldsandbuilttheBelleRiverSeedandGrainCompany.
In1920,hebuiltthefirstoftwoCooperCourts...atwo-storybuilding inBelleRiver,atacostof$40,000.Itbecameapopulargatheringspot forlocalpartiersandisstillfrequentedtoday.
ThesecondCooperCourt,locatedinWalkerville,wasamuchmore elaborateedificeâcompletedin1925,the40roommansioncostabout $200,000andoccupiedanentirecityblock.Theinteriorwastheessence ofopulenceandasMartyGervaisnotesinhisbook,âacolossalorgan pipedmusictoeveryroominthemansionandplayedmusicrollslikea playerpianobutwithcompletefidelityofnaturaltone.âTotalcostofthe organprojectalonewasmorethan$50,000!
TheinstrumentwasmanufacturedinGarwoodNewJerseybythe Aeoliancompanywhichwasprimarilyintheâchamberâorganbusinessto provideentertainmentinthemansionsofmillionairesliketheRockefellersandtheVanderbilts.Between1895and1931,1071organswere installedinresidences.
JamesCooperâsAeolianOpus1535wasdeliveredonAugust13th, 1923withinstallationfinishedonNovember1st,thefollowingyear.The organhas22completesetsofpipesfromthebottomnotetothetopnote ofthekeyboardforatotalof1280pipeswhichwereoriginallylocatedin thebasement,sendingtheirsoundthroughgrillesortonechutesinthe floor.Soundwasalsopumpedthroughtherestofthehugehomethrough thegrillesandcouldbecontrolledbyopeningorclosingdoorsonthe chutesineachroom.TheOpus1535wasaDuo-Artplayer......meaning itcouldbeutilizedinitsautomaticmodetoprovidethefullfidelityofan actualinstrument,oritcouldbeplayedlive.Cooperhaditbothways...he enjoyedlivemusicduringbreakfastandothertimesoftheday,sohehad organistsonhispayroll.Therestofthetime,theorganwasleftinits playermode.
AfterCooperâsdeathin1931,themansionwasdismantledandthe landsold.HiswidowbuiltamuchsmallerhouseonDevonshireRoad nearOntarioStreet,usingbricks,windowsandpanellingthathadbeen salvagedfromtheoriginalplace.
In1946,theorganwasboughtbythethenowneroftheMorris SuttonFuneralhomeatGilesandGoyeauindowntownWindsorfor

$2,000.Itwasthendismantled,movedand re-installedinitsoriginalconfiguration withoutanymodificationsinthechapelata costof$12,000.Andtoday,after68years andanumberofrepairs,itstillproduces beautifulmusicutilizingtheoriginalmotor andblower.
Acoupleofyearsago,RonDossenbach, organistandchoirdirectorattheBedford UnitedChurch,discoveredtheinstrument whenhewasaskedtoplaythefuneral homeâssmallspinetorganataservice.The formertransportdriverforChryslerwho hadsomepreviousexperienceasapipe organtechnician,managedtogettheAeolianrunningagainafterhavingbeenâvirtuallydeadfor10yearsâ....basicallybecauseof neglectandlackofregularmaintenanceover theyears.Ashetellsit,âIwasabletosolder awirehereandthere,Ihadtoreplaceand haveanumberofthehundredsofmagnets rewiredthatcontributetotheactionandreleatheredcertainelements.âHealsoreplaced afewmissingivorykeysandrepairedseveralstopsthathadbeenstuck.Headdsthat becauseofthefuneralhomeâsenvironment oftemperatureandhumiditysimilartothat ofamuseumwasextremelyâfriendlyâtothe organwhichcontributedtoitsrelatively goodcondition.âAtthispoint,âhesays,âit worksinthesameconditionasitdidwhen itwasbrandnew...everysinglepipespeaks, everysinglecontrolworks,includingthe player....itâsamarvel...itâsamuseumpiece!â Hereturnstothefuneralhomeonceor twiceaweektoworkonhisâpetâproject andcontinuesstudyingthehistoryandmechanicsofAeolianOrganssohecanbedesignatedasthetruecustodianoftheWindsor organ.Helikenshispassionfortheorganto theguythatownsa1929ModelâAâFord!
Itisnearlyimpossibletoputavalueon suchauniqueinstrument.Thehistorical valueoftheorganwouldlikelyeclipseitsappraised$400,000andifbuilttodaythereplacementcostcouldlikelydoublethat priceormore.

Well,hereadilyadmitshehasnâtgrownupyet,butheisableto followhisdream,quitesuccessfullyinfact!
HewasborninWindsorandgrewupintheHarrowarea.DuringhisjunioryearsatGeneralAmherstHighinAmherstburg, Miketriedhishandatfootball....buthisheartwassomewhereelse âburiedintheguitarriffsofcountrymusic.Inhissparetimehe workedatthefamilyâsconveniencestoreand restaurantinHarrow.Itwasingrade11whenhelearnedhowtoplaytheguitarand startedwritinghisownmusic.Hesangandplayedatanumberof sologigs,andgraduallyexpandedhiseffortstolocalbarsand restaurants.Atthesametime,realizingthevalueofagoodeducation,MikeenrolledattheUniversityofWindsorwherehegraduatedthisyearwithaBachelorofScienceDegreeinNursing.
Inthewinterof2012hefeltconfidentenoughwithhismusical abilityandheenteredanon-linecompetitiondefeatinghundreds ofcompetingartistsandreceivinganinvitationtoopenforthehot YouTubeartistTylerWardattheSoundAcademyinToronto.
But,therewasonlyoneproblem....heneededaband.Sohe reachedouttothreeofhismusicalbuddieswithwhomhehad recordingexperienceandtheyquicklyjoinedinfortheadventure. Inthesummerof2013,MikeUre,AlexSeguin,DeanMailloux andAidanJohnson-Bujoldplayedtheirfirst-evershowbefore thousandsofpeopleinToronto...andtheyâveneverlookedback.
Theirperformancewassmooth,professionalandpolished...filled withthekindofenergythatmusicloverscrave!Itmarkedthe beginningoftheMikeUreBand.
âAfterToronto,âsaysMike,âwestartedplayingliveshowsalong withsomesmallbargigs...andweweregrowing.Wedidnâtknow muchaboutthebookingendofthebusiness,butlearnedaswe wentalonganditpaidoff.Wewentfromthesmallergigstoopeningforsomebignames...nottoobadforonlybeingtogethera year-and-a-half.âThegroupâsfanbasegrewsteadilyafterappearancesattheRockNâHorseFest,theLaSalleStrawberryFestival, CosmosatCaesarâsWindsorandtheWindsorRiverCruise...just tonameafew.ThebandalsoopenedforcountrystarMichelle WrightatlastyearâsShoresofErieInternationalWineFestivaland setthestageforDallasSmithattheBullnâBarrelUrbanSaloon, recognizedasoneof thetopcountrybarsinthearea.Mikealso creditstheinternetâssocialmediasitesforbringingthebandâs attentiontothepublic.âItâsjustbeenblowingup,âhesays.

ItâsthetownwhereRobertZimmerman,akaBobDylan,grew up.Andthereforeforlegionsoffansaroundtheworlditholdsa veryspecialsignificance,evensacredground.Itâsmorethanenough togeneratefanpilgrimagestonorthernMinnesota,aoneandone halfhourdrivefromanysizablecity,Duluth,locatedatthefarend ofwesternLakeSuperior.
BobDylanwasactuallyborninDuluth.Butinkindergartenhis familymovedtoHibbing,75milesaway.Itisthere,inthenondescriptstuccohouseatthecornerof25thStreetandSeventhAve.âthehouseâsaddressis2425SeventhâthatyoungRobertgrewup andwenttohighschool,convenientlylocatedacoupleofblocks upthestreet.HibbingHighisamammothbuildingknownlocally foritsarchitecturally-stunningtheatre,HibbingâsequivalentofDetroitâsFoxTheatre.Dylansangtherein1958and1959justbefore packinghisguitarandheadingoffforfameandfortune.

onherway.âLateron,âshesays,âTonyPoserofSuchandSuch Productions,theonlyguyinWindsorwhowasdoingmurder mysteries,gavemeacallwhichturnedouttobemyfirstâprofessional,payingjobâ,outsideofmystintwiththeCityofWindsor.â Today,nearly30yearslater,Michelleisstillknockinâemdeadwith hermurdermysteriesandothercomedicendeavours.
AfterTonylefttown,Michellecontinuedthemurder-mystery traditionthroughherowncompany,MJMEntertainmentProductions,eventuallyconnectingwiththedowntownCapitol Theatre.Hershowswerealwayssoldoutandbecamesopopular thatadvertisingwasnâtevennecessary.However,themagicalrun stoppedin2007whenthetheatrewentbankrupt.âItwasdevastating,âsaysMichelle.âIhadtore-evaluateeverythingandtooka jobattheCasinoforawhile,butaftertwofailedpregnanciesand beingtoldIcouldneverhavechildren,Irealizedthatentertainmentwasthelifeforme,soIsetaboutrebuildingmycompany. BornandraisedintheSunParlortown,DanaLearwenttotheMargaretD. BennieElementarySchoolandattendedKingsvilleHightotakeadvantageofthe musicprogramthere.Withherexceptionalsingingvoiceshebecameanactivememberoftheschoolchoirandperformedinanumberofmusicalswithlocalgroups atvariouslocationsthroughoutthecounty.Aftermatriculating,shestudiedatthe UniversityofWindsor,graduatingwithadegreeinSocialWork.Inherthirdand fourthyears,aspartofhertwodaysofweeklyplacementactivities,sheworkedwith chronicallymentally-illadultsinDetroit.Eventuallyshereturnedtoschooland earnedherteachingcertificate.
HerfirstmajorjobwasSubstanceAbuseCo-ordinatorwiththeSalvationArmy inWindsor.Shesays,âpeoplewouldcometomeaboutaddictions,buttheyalso openedupaboutotherlifegriefandlossissuesâtheirfamiliesandtheirchildren andIrealizedtherewerenâtmanyresourcesouttherethathelpeddealwiththose situations.âItwasatthattimethatDanaâshusbandsuggestedmaybesheshould considerwritingabookonthesubject.
âIâvealways likedwriting,âshesays,âeversinceI wasyoung.Eveninelementaryschool,Icouldjust rattleoffpoemsandjournalsquickly....itwasalways somethingIenjoyed.Mymomkeptalotofthem andoccasionallyshewouldgivethembacktomein cardsorletters.âDanarecallsthatwritingabook hadalwaysbeeninthebackofhermind...âitwas onmybucketlist.â
Severalyearsagowhenherchildrenweremuch younger,Danahadwrittenakidsâstoryongrief andloss.Shesaysitâslooselybasedonthepassing ofSeanMcInnis,ayoungLeamingtonfirefighter wholeftbehindhiswifeAmyandtwodaughters, MeghanandMarissa,oneofwhomsharesabirthdaywithDanaâsdaughter.Thatstorysatinthe authorâscomputerfornearly9yearsbeforebeing revivedlastyearandturnedintoabooktitled âMagicKissesâ,AGriefJourneyFromHeartache toHope.
InDanaâswords:âthisisafictionalstorybased ontrueexperiencesofgrievingfamiliesandistold throughthenarrationofan8year-oldgirlnamed Mollywhoalsohasayoungersister.Theirfather haspassedawayandthegrievinggirltriesmany creativewaystobringhimback.âShepraysfora miracleandatChristmastimesheasksSantaClaus forassistance.Atamagicshowwhereamagician hasmadeawomandisappearbeforemagically bringingherback,Mollyaskshimtodothesame forherfather.Thefamilyevenstoppedeating spaghettiandmeatballs,becausethathadbeen dadâsfavouritemeal.Gradually,though,Molly realizesherdadwonâtbecomingbackandshebeginstalkingaboutitwithhermother.
