Special Events Easter Eggstravaganza Come join the Easter Bunny for the 6th Annual Easter Eggstravaganza. There will be open gym activities for you and your child to enjoy together along with games and a gigantic Easter Egg hunt all around the Community Recreation Center, so bring your Easter basket to fill up!

Don’t Be A Victim Don’t Be a Victim is a new class brought to you by the Windsor Police Department.

The class will be spent discussing the types of crimes that happen in our community and how you can help yourself in preventing them from happening to you. These crimes include auto theft, auto breakings, burglary, identity theft and the always popular door to door sales issues.

Arbor Day Tree Sale Each year, the Town of Windsor offers a great selection of trees to Windsor residents at discount prices. These trees grow well in the Windsor area and are to be planted within town limits (for clarification on residency, please check your property tax statement). Arbor Day 5K Run/Walk The Town of Windsor Tree Board will host the 6th Annual Arbor Day 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, April 21st. The race will start and finish at Boardwalk Park and follow the Windsor Lake Trail. Proceeds will go towards planting trees throughout the community. Leashed dogs are welcome. Preregister at the CRC or on race day beginning at 7am. Fee includes a t-shirt. Awards will be given to the top runners/walkers in each category and lots of giveaways will be handed out!

Community Brush Recycling Site­ Due to extensive tree damage Windsor sustained during the October 2011 storm, the Brush Recycling Site will be open and free of charge through the end of this year. Beginning January 1, 2012 there will be a new fee structure and management plan in effect along with new improved hours. Usage will be two dollar ($2.00) fee per load for residents (proof of residency required at site) otherwise the cost is six dollars ($6.00) per cubic yard. Updated information will be available on the town website.

A Cell Phone Audio Tour is now available at the Museum at Boardwalk Park! Simply dial (970) 404-3333 from any cell phone and follow the instructions for a self-guided tour of our historic buildings.

In the 1930s, photographers working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) captured unforgettable images of human fortitude and despair in the face of calamity. Nebraska photographer Bill Ganzel set out in the late 1970s to find and re-photograph Dust Bowl survivors for a book and exhibition. This exhibit, abridged from the original by Humanities Texas and displayed in Sherman, TX in 1999, combines the FSA photographs and Ganzel’s interviews to create an eloquent story of human fortitude.

2012 Visiting Artist – Lyse Dzija

Experience the exquisite juxtaposition of delicacy and strength alive in Colorado artist Lyse Dzija’s work. Inspired by nature and the power of personal introspection, Dzija creates sensitive landscapes that invite the viewer to immerse themselves in a “felt experience”.

With the control stick strapped to his knee and camera in hand, Adriel Heisey navigates his hand-built ultra-light aircraft slowly over the land, his lens open to what lies below. The results are mysterious and compelling images that move between pure documentation and powerful abstraction. Their visual power invokes memories, associations, and emotions that are rooted in the vast landscape of the American Southwest.

Mindscapes: A beautifully framed set of 27 dramatic color photographs, including personal observations by the artist about each print.

Walking Levels for Trips and Tours The following Walking Levels will be assigned to each Active Adult trip or tour to help you decide which trips and tours are suitable for you. Each level is based upon research done by staff. The Windsor Community Recreation Center reserves the right to change levels if necessary when additional information becomes available.

Walking Levels: Easy: Minimal walking, primarily flat surfaces.

Moderate:

Difficult:

To fully participate there may be leisurely walking over primarily even surfaces and some uneven surfaces, standing may be required and possibly a few stairs.

To fully participate there may be extended periods of walking over even and uneven surfaces and some incline. There may be steps and extended periods of standing. Participants with physical limitations should take this into account.

Snowshoe/Cross Country Ski Trips Snowshoe/Cross Country Ski trips will be scheduled to different locations and may be changed according to weather conditions, so please check in with us for updated information the week of the trip. Some experience is necessary and these trips are not intended for a beginner. Please bring your own gear, pack a lunch, dress appropriately, and be prepared to purchase your own trail pass or park permit depending on the location. Walking Level: Varies–please see below.

Breckenridge Snow Sculpture Tour In Breckenridge each year, blank canvases of snow become works of art. From a whimsical bouquet of enormous flowers, to thought provoking abstract shapes, sculptors form these masterpieces before thousands of spectators over the course of five days in the heart of town. In its 22nd year, artists from all over the world will come together to present intricate, awe-inspiring snow sculptures. These artists will carve twentyton, 12-foot-tall blocks of snow into pieces of art using only their creativity, inspiration, own two hands and permitted hand tools.

NoCo Ice Center is pleased to offer learn to skate classes, Saturday afternoons and Tuesday mornings. It doesn’t matter your age or level, we will have a class for you.

Snowplow Sam 1-3: Designed to help children develop preliminary coordination and strength necessary to maneuver on the ice. Basic skills are the focus: falling, getting up, forward and backward skating. Time spent in the Snowplow Sam will allow the children to become more comfortable on the ice.

Basic 1-8: These eight levels of the program introduce the fundamental moves: forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, and turns. Upon completion of the basic skills levels, skaters will have the basic knowledge of the sport enabling them to advance to the more specialized areas of skating—free skating, dance, pairs, and synchronized.

Adult 1-4: The Adult program will promote physical fitness as well as improve balance and coordination while learning proper skating techniques. Adult skaters will progress at an individual rate while being challenged and motivated.

Free skate 1-6: Skaters are always excited to graduate from the basic skills to the free skate levels. Each free skate level is divided into four sections: moves in the field (edges), footwork, jumps, and spins. The free skate levels are designed to give skaters a strong foundation which to build their skills.

Parent/Tot: This is a fun way to get started if you have a little one not ready to start group lessons by themselves. The class is for children ages 3 and 4. Parents skating in this class should be able to skate forwards and backwards comfortably on their own before they enroll.

Taught by one of the nation’s top twirling instructors, Director of the Rocky Mountain Golden Girls Baton Academy, Yvonne Pedersen. A great way to build coordination, rhythm, and grace, in addition to self-esteem, discipline, and teamwork skills.

Sports – Youth Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge The Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge is a FREE competition open to boys and girls that allows youngsters to showcase their talents in dribbling, passing, and shooting. It is a youth program produced by the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Parks and Recreation Association with support from Comfort Dental and the Colorado Beef Council. Top scorers from each age group advance to a sectional competition and sectional winners advance to the State Championship to be held in conjunction with a Denver Nuggets game at the Pepsi Center.

Recreation Girls Softball Indian Peaks League Girls ages 12 & under, 14 & under, and 18 & under will participate in the Indian Peaks Girls Softball Association League (IPGSA). This “C” level recreation league has been serving girls along the Northern Front Range for over 20 years providing friendly fast pitch competition. IPGSA teams can play in a tune-up tournament, play 10-to-12 league games, a round robin tournament, and can qualify for a postseason tournament. League season runs from May 4 – July 3. Forestry Caring for Damaged Trees The first snow of the season caused damage to many trees across the region. Windsor saw a significant amount of broken branches and in many cases complete loss. Most vulnerable were trees that had not lost their leaves such as elms and fruit trees but most tree species were no match for the wet, heavy, October snow.

Watch out for large trees as it is very difficult to truly see all the damage in the canopy.

Hanging branches may be visible but it would be wise to have a certified arborist do a thorough inspection of the tree.

Below is a list of helpful tips to deal with storm damaged trees.

(Information provided by International Society of Arboriculture and the Colorado State Forest Service)

1. Check for hazards. Before approaching a tree, examine your surroundings to avoid making contact with downed utility lines or standing under hanging branches that are broken and ready to fall.

2. Contact Town officials if necessary. Trees between the street and a city sidewalk may be the responsibility of town crews.

3. Assess the damage. If a tree is healthy overall and still possesses its leader (the main upward branch), most of its major limbs and 50 percent or more of its crown, the chance is good for a complete recovery.

4. Be careful knocking snow off branches. This may cause the branches to break. If you must remove snow, gently push up on branches from below to prevent adding additional stress.

5. Remove broken branches. This minimizes the risk of decay and insects or diseases entering the wound. Prune at the branch collar – the point where a branch joins a larger one – and be mindful of potential pent-up energy if the branch is twisted or bent.

6. Don’t over-prune. With the loss of some branches, a tree may look unbalanced, but most trees quickly grow new foliage that hides bare areas.

7. Don’t try to do it all yourself. If the job requires running a chainsaw overhead, sawing from a ladder or removing large branches or entire trees, contact an insured, certified arborist. Professionals often are listed in the phone book under “tree services.”

Brush Recycling Site­ Due to extensive tree damage Windsor sustained during the October 2011 storm, the Brush Recycling Site will be open and free of charge through the end of this year.

Beginning January 1, 2012 there will be a new fee structure and management plan in effect along with new improved hours.

Usage will be two dollar ($2.00) fee per load for residents (proof of residency required at site) otherwise the cost is six dollars ($6.00) per cubic yard. Updated information will be available on the town website.

This cooperative program, administered by Denver Botanic Gardens & Colorado State University in concert with horticulturists & nurseries throughout the region, seeks to identify and distribute the very best plants for landscapes and gardens from the intermountain region to the high plains.

Christmas trees may be dropped off for recycling at the Brush Recycling site. Fees are waived for Christmas trees. Please remove all decorations from trees before dropping them off. Thank you.

All major forms of credit cards are accepted as well as cash, checks, money orders or cashier checks. **Payments by check: The Town of Windsor will charge a $15 service fee for all checks not honored for any reason by the bank.

Reduced Fees

Eligible participants in our Reduced Fee Program can receive a discount off the registration fee.

Deadlines:

The registration deadlines for each event are listed in this brochure under the event description. A “first come, first served” wait list will be maintained after the deadline date to fill any remaining event openings.

Waiting List Procedure:

Waiting lists are a source of contact and do not guarantee you will receive a call back. We will contact you only if a space becomes available.

Waiting lists for a closed class or sport provides us with a name and phone number in the event of a cancellation or if a new class is added. It does not limit you from registering for any other open class.

Class sizes may be limited to assure class quality and safety. Minimum participation numbers must be met or programs may be cancelled.

Refund Policy:

After initial registration, a refund request is required in writing a minimum of five (5) days prior to the start of any class or program to receive a full refund unless otherwise noted. You may stop in to the Community Recreation Center or go visit www.windsorgov.com to fill out a refund request form. Four (4) days prior to the start date and through the first week of the session, 50% of the registration fee is refundable. No refunds or transfers will be allowed after the first week of the session unless circumstances, stated in writing, warrant consideration.

Full refunds will be given if the Recreation Division cancels a class or program. Please note: minimum participation numbers must be met or programs may be cancelled. No refunds or transfers will be accepted less than two (2) days prior to the start of a program that only meets once.

The Windsor Parks, Recreation & Culture Department’s goal is to provide our participants opportunities to form new friendships, meet new people, and have a fun recreational atmosphere with teams as balanced as possible. Special requests are not taken. Only the head coach and one assistant coach’s children are placed on teams together. Teams are randomly selected by computer or by assessments, separated by skill level, age or grade and gender if applicable.

Notice to Participants:

Participants must recognize that all classes/ activities of a physical nature involve some risk and by registering for a class/activity of this nature, there is an assumption of risk by the participant. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of the participants and to provide them with first class recreational facilities, activities and parks.

In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of the Town of Windsor to: 1. Call 911 for emergency personnel for first aid.

2. Reach the parent or guardian as soon as the situation allows.

Each registration must have a waiver signed by either a parent or legal guardian.

Reduced Fee Program

The Windsor Parks, Recreation & Culture Department has a reduced fee program that offers financial assistance to both children and adults who need support in order to participate in recreation activities. Please contact the Community Recreation Center to obtain an application. Your request will be confidentially reviewed and approved based on financial qualifications. For details see page 34.

Arbor Day Tree Sale

Each year, the Town of Windsor Parks and Recreation Forestry division teams up with the Windsor Tree Board to help keep Windsor green!

There will be a great selection of trees that grow well in the area provided at a discounted price! Trees are available for Windsor residents to be planted within the Town limits.
