As the new Director of Parks, Recreation, & Culture I am immersing myself in everything Windsor has to offer, and let me tell you the benefits to living here are amazing! From endless trails and parks to programs and special events that focus on culture and the arts! It is no wonder the area is growing so rapidly.

As we near the end of 2015 and begin looking forward to the year ahead, let me ask you a few questions. Did you take advantage of everything Windsor has to offer? Did you attend a movie or concert? Visit the museum at Boardwalk Park or the Arts & Heritage Center? Walk, bike or run on the trails? Visit your local park? Take a fitness class, play a sport, try pickleball? If the answer is no, then consider this your challenge to get out and participate in 2016. If your answer is yes, then I challenge you to do more and maybe try something new!

Staff is working diligently on designing new programs and special events for 2016. One of our new initiatives that you should begin seeing prior to 2016 is a growing presence on social and digital media. Connecting to current and potential users is imperative as we build community spirit and pride while promoting Windsor as a destination.

It’s an exciting time to Live, Work, and Play in the Town of Windsor and your dedicated staff that makes up your Windsor Parks, Recreation, and Culture Department is working hard and striving to give you the best we have to offer. Arbor Day 5K Run/Walk The Town of Windsor Tree Board will host the 10th Annual Arbor Day 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, April 16. The race will start and finish at Boardwalk Park and follow the Windsor Lake Trail. Proceeds will go towards planting trees throughout the community. Leashed dogs are welcome. Pre-register at the CRC or on race day beginning at 7am. Fee includes a t-shirt (while supplies last). Awards will be given to the top runners/walkers!

Tours can have a specific focus such as Plant Select©, xeric©, veggies, or just be a random walk-through to see what is growing and blooming. Parking is available beside the road for cars or small group buses. Most of the garden can be viewed from paved surfaces.

Learn to garden in northern Colorado by working alongside experienced master gardeners. Regularly scheduled Tue and Thu morning workdays (weather permitting) at Treasure Island begin in April.

National Western Stockshow (Denver) Bulls and broncs, cowboys and cowgirls - rodeo’s biggest superstars perform amazing feats of athleticism during each performance of this professional rodeo. Whether you prefer thrills and spills or speed and agility, the National Western’s Pro Rodeo is the event for you. You will have time to explore the rest of the exhibits before returning back to Windsor. Note: this is a co-op trip with the Greeley Senior Center.

Day Trips and Tours Trips & Travel: Day trips are scheduled each month at various locations. Almost all day trips take place between the hours of 8am and 5pm, Monday-Friday (with some exceptions). Times and dates are subject to change.

Age Requirements: Adults 55+ have first priority; however, adults under 55 may participate in certain activities if space is available.

Supervision: Activities are planned for independent adults who are able to manage their own care, decision making and safety. Individual supervision is not provided by staff or the driver; however, companions and caregivers may participate at customer’s expense to accompany any participant needing assistance.

Walking Levels for Trips and Tours The following Walking Levels will be assigned to each Active Adult trip or tour to help you decide which trips and tours are suitable for you. Each level is based upon research done by staff. The Windsor Community Recreation Center reserves the right to change levels if necessary when additional information becomes available.

Walking Levels: Easy: Minimal walking, primarily flat surfaces.

Moderate: To fully participate there may be leisurely walking over primarily

even surfaces and some uneven surfaces, standing may be

required and possibly a few stairs.

Difficult:

To fully participate there may be extended periods of walking over even and uneven surfaces and some incline. There may be steps and extended periods of standing. Participants with physical limitations should take this into account.

Adams County Historical Museum is a little gem of a museum and is located northeast of the downtown Denver area, in what was once more commonly known as the Henderson area. Though generally considered part of the greater Brighton area now, it’s worth a visit no matter what the address! Walking Level: Easy

National Center for Atmospheric Research NCAR (Boulder) NCAR is a federally funded research and development center. NCAR strives to understand the behavior of the atmosphere and related Earth and geospace systems. Touch a cloud, consider chaos, steer a hurricane, explore climate, take a look at the Sun, and browse art galleries. They are all part of the exhibits at the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

Glen Eyrie Castle Tour & Tea (Colorado Springs) Immerse yourself in the history of Glen Eyrie, from General Palmer to The Navigators, with a guided castle tour.

The tour includes a brief historical video and a guided tour through the Carriage House and the first and second floors of Glen Eyrie Castle. Your tour guide will entertain you with stories of the Palmer family, the Glen Eyrie Estate, architecture of the castle, surrounding landscape and Colorado Springs history.

Denver History Tour (Denver) If you are looking for the tales of wellmannered gentleman and swooning ladies with rose-scented handkerchiefs, this isn’t it. Denver’s earliest tales were almost never written by gentlemen, and polite company doesn’t even discuss those kinds of ladies. Fortunately, Denver History Tours is not a polite company, at least not this time around.

Rope burn and lead poisoning helped Denver fill its coffers and its coffins.

Some experience is necessary and these trips are not intended for a beginner. A naturalist from Larimer Country might lead this hike, depending on availability.

This one-of-a-kind facility features over 600 railroad-related artifacts ranging from a Virginia and Truckee Railroad switch key to a full-sized Colorado and Southern wooden Caboose available for examining both inside and out. The highlight of the museum is its huge, 5,500 sq. ft. operating model railroad dubbed "the finest model railroad I've ever seen", by the 30-year senior editor of Model Railroader magazine, Jim Hediger. Visitors may actually stroll through this three dimensional creation while the railroad is in operation. They are surrounded by rugged mountains with handmade features including 16,000 fir, 8,000 deciduous and 4,000 aspen trees. Rivers abound. Scenery becomes three dimensional art. Get your "geek" on and fill your brain with lots of nerdy information by touring the U.S. National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL). It's a facility for storing, curating, and studying meteoric ice cores recovered from the glaciated regions of the world. It provides scientists with the capability to conduct examinations and measurements on ice cores, and it preserves the integrity of these ice cores in a long-term repository for current and future investigations.

The ice cores are recovered and studied for a variety of scientific investigations, most of which focus on the reconstruction of past climate states of the Earth. By investigating past climate fluctuations, scientists hope to be able to understand the mechanisms by which climate change is accomplished, and in so doing, they hope to develop predictive capabilities for future climate change. Lee Maxwell’s Washing Museum Tour (Eaton)

The exhibition Samurai: Armor from the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Collection will tell the iconic story of the Japanese samurai through 140 objects from one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of samurai armor and accoutrement in the world. Surrounded by murals and war regalia, visitors will be immersed in the life, culture, and pageantry of samurai in the 1100s through the 1800s.

Exquisitely decorated suits of armor, helmets, weapons, horse trappings, and additional battle gear will be on display, demonstrating masterful craftsmanship. Samurai will highlight the artistic inspiration for these elaborate suits of armor. Walking Level: Moderate

This incredible collection belongs to Lee Maxwell. He lives just down the road from Windsor and has amassed the Guinness World’s Record for most antique washing machines.

The museum displays 1,408+ antique washing machines, some manufactured as early as 1840; Most of the machines are from the USA, but there are also some from Austria, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and Great Britain.

There is also a myriad of laundry tools including, dolly sticks, stomps, washing bats, washer skates, washboards, irons and mangles. After a stop for lunch, we'll take one more tour at a local gem of a spot that most people don't realize is right around the corner.

Kenpo Karate emphasizes martial arts skills, integrity and individual achievement. It is strongly based in selfdefense as well as traditional katas, or forms, presented in a well organized curriculum. Students also benefit from discipline, confidence, fitness, coordination and fun! Panthers are introduced to the Five Rules of Safety.

This class focuses on the fundamental rules and skills of the exciting and safe sport of modern Olympic fencing.

Students learn fundamental skills such as basic footwork and bladework with the foil - a light thrusting weapon - as well as the basic rules of play and safety requirements of the sport. Wildfire Spring/Summer Competition Cheer Team The Windsor Wildfires are competitive no-cut cheer teams that focus on leadership through skills progression, community service, and sportsmanship.

Spring/Summer is our pre-competition season (the main season is SeptemberMarch). During spring/summer we will be forming teams to focus on skill progression. Cheerleaders will attend cheer camp and have the opportunity to either compete or exhibition their competitive routine at the end of summer.

Babysitter’s Boot Camp is a comprehensive skills-based class for youth 11 to 13 years old looking to get the knowledge and confidence to be great babysitters! Topics covered include: business practices, leadership principles, discipline and communication, safe play and basic care for infants and children. Also covered is disaster preparedness, preventing injuries and accidents, recognizing and responding to emergencies, infant and child CPR, choking and basic first aid.

Sports – Adult Men’s Adult Basketball

Summer Adult Softball

Men’s recreational teams play six league games, and a single elimination tournament. Games consist of two 20 minute halves. Players must be 18 years of age or older. The league is designed for teams that have average skilled players. Teams should not have more than two players over 6’4” tall.

This league combines the interest of both men's and coed softball teams in the community for friendly competition and sportsmanship. Number of teams per night is limited so register early!

Teams are scheduled to play seven regular season games with a double elimination post-season tournament.

Boys in-town recreation basketball is a fun recreation league designed to teach the fundamentals of basketball in a team setting. To help ensure equal team competition, 3rd – 8th grade players must attend one mandatory player assessment date.

Winter Basketball Camp Camp Director Bruce Dick is one of the best motivators and shooting instructors in the game today. His camps will improve the ability of basketball players regardless of their ability or age. His teams play an exciting style of basketball and are always among the top 3 point shooting and free throw teams in Colorado.

Recreation flag football is offered in conjunction with the Ft. Collins Recreation Department. Teams will practice in Windsor and travel to Fort Collins for games. Participants are placed into divisions according to grade.

This league is about sportsmanship, fundamentals and equal playing time.

Start Smart Basketball teaches 4 & 5 year old children the basic motor skills necessary to play organized basketball while they work one-onone with their parents. Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge The Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge is a FREE competition open to boys and girls that allows youngsters to showcase their talents in dribbling, passing, and shooting. This youth program is produced by the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Parks and Recreation Association. Top scorers from each age group advance to a sectional competition and sectional winners advance to the State Championship to be held in conjunction with a Denver Nuggets game at the Pepsi Center.

Sports – Youth Recreation T-Ball & Baseball Recreation baseball provides friendly instructional competition for ages 6 to 14 years. T-ball will practice and play games in Windsor. 8 & under to 12 & under will practice in Windsor and will combine leagues with Thompson Rivers and Berthoud and will play games in Windsor, Johnstown and Berthoud. 14 & under will participate in the Greeley Evans Youth League (GEYL) and will practice in Windsor and play games in Windsor & Greeley. Softball Girls Indian Peaks League Windsor Parks and Recreation girls ages 10 & under, 12 & under, and 14 & under, will participate in the Indian Peaks Girls Softball Association League (IPGSA). This ‘C’ level recreation league has been serving girls along the Northern Front Range for over 20 years by providing friendly fast pitch competition. IPGSA teams can play in a tune-up tournament, play 10to-12 league games, a round robin tournament, and can qualify for a postseason tournament. League season runs from May 2 - July 1. NYSCA training teaches coaches their responsibilities and holds them accountable to a strict code of conduct. It is mandatory for youth coaches to come to one of the scheduled meetings during the year!

Reduced Fee Program The Windsor Parks, Recreation & Culture Reduced Fee Program is funded through generous donations from multiple sources including the Windsor Town Board and United Way of Weld County.

Reduced fees are available for Town of Windsor residents meeting qualification guidelines including proof of income and household size taken from the most recent IRS tax form and proof of residency taken from a property tax certificate, Town of Windsor utility bill or rental agreement. Applications are available at the front desk of the Windsor Community Recreation Center, 250 N. 11th Street, online at: www.windsorgov.com, or by calling 970-674-3500.

Uniforms: Uniforms are sold at the Windsor Community Recreation Center.

Recreational uniforms may be exchanged or returned within 10 business days of purchase date if it has not been worn or washed and the tags are still attached.

Parent Meetings Parents Assoc. for Youth Sports & Sport Specific Info. The PAYS program helps parents and youth leagues work together to provide the best possible sports experience for children. If you have previously attended the PAYS portion of the Parent Meeting, you do not need to attend again. Concussion training starts at 6:45pm. This training educates parents about the signs and symptoms of concussions while emphasizing the seriousness of head injuries. If you have attended the concussion training you are not required to attend again. The sport specific portion of the meeting starts at 7:30pm which covers season schedules, rules and more.

We are growing and with growth come short term headaches and inconveniences. This is especially the case at the Community Recreation Center where the $16 million dollar expansion is under way! Improvements to Boardwalk Park too!

In addition to the CRC Expansion project, we are building a bandshell/pavilion at Boardwalk Park that will serve as the permanent stage for our summer concert series as well as other outdoor events! Construction is expected to be complete in May 2016!

Arbor Day Tree Sale Each year, Windsor Forestry teams up with the Windsor Tree Board to help keep Windsor green! There will be a great selection of trees that grow well in the area provided at a discounted price! Trees are available for Windsor residents to be planted within the town limits.(For clarification on residency, please check your property tax statement.)
