July 2026 PRESIDENT'S PEN Serving on the Board As we enter another Windsor Gardens Board of Directors election season this month, I find myself reflecting on what has now been nearly seven years of Bobbie Mays, service on our board. While my current term does not WG Board conclude until December, President I wanted to take this opportunity to share some thoughts about board service and encourage residents to consider becoming involved in the leadership of our community.

When I first joined the board, I simply wanted to contribute to the place I call home. Over the years, that decision has provided me with a deeper understanding of the responsibilities, challenges and rewards that come with serving our community. I have learned that effective community leadership is not about individual accomplishments but about working together to make decisions that benefit all residents.

Serving on the board has allowed me to work alongside dedicated volunteers, management professionals, committee members, and engaged residents. Together, we have addressed challenges, planned for the future, maintained our facilities, managed our finances, and sought to preserve and enhance the quality of life that makes our community special.

Theodore Scott Gilbert Theodore "Ted" Scott Gilbert, a Windsor Gardens resident for over 10 years, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2026, in his sleep. While he lived in three different buildings here in Windsor Gardens, he most recently lived in building 32.

Ted was born on July 1, 1953, in Sandusky, Ohio. He had polio at a young age but it didn’t disable him until later in life. He worked for General Motors during his working years and was married to Carlita. They had two children, Scott and Mae. IN REMEMBRANCE continued on page 4

Water Situation is Dire Having lived in an Arizona community where water conservation became so extreme that outdoor watering was banned altogether, it is disconcerting at best to see so many Denverites not taking our current water situation seriously.

The required 20 percent reduction in water is a minimal imposition compared to what we will be facing if we endure another dry winter like the one we just experienced. In fact, most water experts predict a catastrophic change in our lifestyle if that happens.

But what we are hearing from some of our fellow Windsor Gardens residents is, “Ho hum,” or “It’s the HOA’s problem,” or, worst of all, “What are you talking about?”

PRESIDENT'S PEN continued from page 1 involvement. Strong communities are built when neighbors are willing to contribute their time, talents and perspectives. While board service requires commitment, it also offers a unique opportunity to learn, grow and help shape the future of the community.

I encourage other homeowners to consider running for the board.

You do not need to be an expert in finance, construction, law or property management. What matters most is a willingness to listen, learn, collaborate, and make decisions in the best interests of the community as a whole.

Board service provides an opportunity to: • Gain a better understanding of how our community operates.

• Help guide important decisions affecting our future.

• Work with fellow residents toward common goals.

• Protect and enhance property values.

• Contribute to the long-term success of our community.

Our HOA board benefits from a variety of experiences, backgrounds and viewpoints. New voices bring fresh ideas and perspectives that help our community continue to evolve and thrive.

This will be my final year of board service as we are changing our association bylaws such that positions on the board are limited to two terms. As I begin looking toward the conclusion of my chapter as a board member, I am grateful for the trust residents have placed in me and for the opportunity to serve. In the coming months, I look forward to supporting a smooth transition and encouraging the next generation of community leaders.

Attend meetings, ask questions, speak with current board members, and consider submitting your name as a candidate. Your involvement can make a meaningful difference. LETTERS continued from page 3 We are facing a drought that has continued for some 30 years, and the Colorado River is in danger of collapse if we ignore it. So please realize that the 20 percent reduction in water usage applies to all of us. It’s a small price to pay today to help avoid catastrophe tomorrow.

Examples of water conservation (some pointed out in recent issues of Windsor Life) include: *Flush pee every two times. *Turn water off while brushing teeth. *Turn shower water off while sudsing up and lathering hair; only turn on to rinse. Better yet, take shorter showers. *Fill dishwasher to capacity before using.

Patricia and James Keyworth The Drought and WG Landscaping As we are in a drought, why, despite water restrictions, are some large lawn areas in WG beautifully green while other small areas have dead grass or dirt/no grass at all? Is the sprinkler system not working in some areas? Many of these green areas do not have shade coverage from trees, while the smaller, dead areas do have shade or minimal direct sun.

I know that only the flowers were being watered, not the grass, until recently. But the three minutes of watering every few days is not enough to restore these dead areas. Are there any plans to restore the look of the WG lawns?

Some areas in WG have beautiful landscaping with different types of rocks and several plants. Are there any plans for zeroscaping without plants, so no water is required in the areas that are already dead?

The landscaping with rocks and mulch by 9360 Center St. and 680 S. Alton Way is beautiful, yet over 50 new plants/bushes have been planted among the rocks at each location. All these plants need water despite being drought-tolerant. Yet, the area in front of 680 S. Alton Way looks terrible.

Why is money being spent on hundreds of new plants/bushes that need water when water is scarce (not to mention all the dead bushes that need to be replaced)? The situation may only get worse as the season continues.

Why do the areas with dead grass and dirt look the way they do?

And how can they look better? A few example locations: 9180 Center St., 610 S. Alton Way, 700 S. Alton Way, 665 S. Clinton St., and 660 S. Alton Way. LETTERS continued on page 5

Lisa Smyth Response to "The Drought and WG Landscaping" Lisa: Thank you for your letter. I am sure many residents have the same questions.

As you have noticed, we are currently focusing our water use on the annual flower beds and are minimizing irrigation in the grass/ turf areas. This is not our normal practice but is in response to the water budget we are required to comply with this year, which mandates a 20% reduction in water use. Our grounds department is strategically conserving our water for the hotter summer months, when our landscape will need it most.

If you look around the community right now, we have a good opportunity to evaluate where grass thrives and where it does not.

It is a rare chance to identify areas where our irrigation system would typically have to work hard to keep turf green from one season to the next. Under normal conditions, these weak spots would be less noticeable unless there are contributing factors, such as pet damage, tree-related challenges, drainage issues, or recent construction disturbances. There is a reason behind every area of concern you may notice.

Many of the areas with poor turf conditions are good candidates for xeriscape projects, which have been a focus for several years.

The 9360 East Center Avenue area you mentioned is a recently completed project, and there are several others the grounds crew has completed over the years. While new plant material may require additional irrigation during establishment, our long-term goal is to sustain these areas with drip irrigation systems, which use significantly less water than traditional turf irrigation. Many xeric plants require little to no irrigation once established. We are fortunate to have employees with strong horticultural expertise who know which plants are best suited for Windsor Gardens. The

capital reserve budget includes an annual allocation to support these projects, and while we will continue making progress each year, it will take time to address all the areas you have identified.

Rest assured, we see them as well and have established priorities.

Deciding whether to continue with the annual flower program and landscape improvement projects during a water-restricted year is challenging, and ultimately that responsibility falls to me. Denver Water does allow the association to continue watering plants and trees, and the primary focus of the water budget restrictions is on irrigated turf, as discussed above. We take our responsibility to comply very seriously.

It is a slippery slope to pause repair and replacement programs at Windsor Gardens, even temporarily. This includes landscape replacements such as trees, shrubs, and perennials. These are highly visible HOA components that impact curb appeal and can lead to resident dissatisfaction if not addressed in a timely manner. The landscape and annual flower program are central to our community’s identity and contribute to property values, making them important to maintain.

It is never an easy decision when the facilities manager and grounds supervisor ask whether to cancel the flower program for the season. We faced the same question in 2021 during the COVID pandemic. At that time, I chose to move forward with the flowers as we always have, and I made the same decision this year. In my May column, I asked residents to support this approach by reducing indoor water use—such as flushing less frequently and running their dishwasher fewer times per week. I believe flowers are important to our community, and I am confident residents will support this effort. It was the right decision in 2021, and I hope it proves to be the right decision again this year.

Our grounds crew is the best I have worked with in 30 years, and I believe they are among the best in Colorado. Let’s support them this season and follow their lead.

WG Board in Motion On May 28, 2026, the WG Board of Directors passed an electronic motion approve the board resolution for exterior holiday decorations celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the 150th anniversary of Colorado’s statehood.

On June 12, 2026, the board passed an electronic motion to approve the June property tax transfer of $266,424.50 from the Association’s operating account to the tax reserve account to fund the second half property tax payment for 2025 due in 2026.

At a special board meeting on June 17, 2026, the board approved the insurance settlement and policy holder release with a final payment of $1.95 million on the remaining depreciation funds from the 2024 hailstorm.

At their regular board meeting on June 19, 2026, the board passed the following motions.

Finance Committee motions: − Motion to transfer $386,599.83 to the capital reserve account. − Motion to transfer $197,351.07 to the capital reserve account.

(This transfer represents the June insurance loan payment from the operating account.)

Three seats on the 2027 Windsor Gardens Board of Directors are open for election this year. Each position is for a three-year term, starting January 1, 2027.

Starting this year, board candidates are required to submit a notice of candidacy instead of a nomination petition form. Each candidate's notice of candidacy must include a written summary of their background and experience, not to exceed 350 words, and a high-resolution photo (the association staff will take a photo if needed).

Summaries and photos will be published in Windsor Life and election materials.

Notice of candidacy forms will be available beginning July 28 at the candidate information sessions and in the administration office.

Completed forms with the background summaries and photos may be submitted to the administration office from July 29 through August 21, 2026. The submission deadline is August 21, at 4:30 p.m.

From the General Manager DELINQUENCIES AT WINDSOR GARDENS

Over the past couple of years, the association has seen a significant increase in past-due assessment balances. This rise has begun to impact our operating cash flow, requiring us to be more strategic in budget planning and thoughtful when funding larger expenses.

While the number of delinquencies is higher than usual, there is no need for alarm at this time.

Based on prior experience in HOA management, periods of increased delinquencies often align with broader market conditions, such as economic downturns, the 2008–2009 housing market crash, rising interest rates, or shifts like those during COVID, when housing activity slowed as many buyers took a wait-and-see approach.

One additional factor we are seeing in this cycle involves owners who purchased at the height of the housing market in 2021–2022.

If they now need to sell their unit, they may find that current price points are below what they originally paid. In many cases, the combined impact of the loss assessment, increase in HOA dues, and rise in property taxes over the past couple of years has made it difficult, or even impossible, for these owners to afford to remain in Windsor Gardens. At the same time, they may be unable to sell until market conditions improve.

Legislative changes over the past few years have also significantly impacted the collection of past-due assessments. The primary effects have been increased expenses for the association, such as certified mailings and legal fees, and a lengthier collection process.

In 2025, a requirement was introduced that mandated the association file a personal lawsuit against an owner before initiating judicial foreclosure. This change has altered how collections are handled and added time to the process, ultimately increasing the total balance owed.

In some cases, pursuing a lawsuit against an owner, particularly in Windsor Gardens, where owners are elderly and on a fixed income, may not be a practical or cost-effective solution. However, this step is required by law unless the owner is deceased.

Currently, Windsor Gardens has over 100 units on the market, with approximately 22 under contract, a slight increase from prior months. As market activity improves and units begin to sell, we expect delinquency levels to gradually decline and occupancy to increase. Recovery is expected, as it has in the past, but the timing remains uncertain. We will navigate this current market together and continue working with owners who are attempting to

bring their account balances current. Again, there is no need for alarm, but it is an important time for awareness.

The complete collection policy is available on the association’s website in the resource center under the policies folder.

DELINQUENCY OVERVIEW Fiscal Year-End 2025 HOA Assessment Delinquencies: $208,938.88 for 139 total units.

Fiscal Year-End 2026 HOA Assessment Delinquencies: $266,047.82 for 140 total units.

Current Fiscal Year Assessment Delinquencies as of May 31, 2026: $333,917.52 for 161 total units.

Note: 90% of the current delinquency balance is managed by the association’s attorney.

First Mortgage Foreclosures According to the Denver Clerk and Recorder foreclosure property search website, there have been 11 first mortgage foreclosures in Windsor Gardens from January 2025 to June 2026.

Judicial Foreclosures As of May 2026, the association is pursuing four judicial foreclosures on units with significant past-due assessment balances.

Other Balances Owed by Owners It is important to note that additional charges and balances may be billed to owner accounts. These are classified as other accounts receivable balances and may include late fees, certified mailing fees, lockout fees, bill-backs for legal expenses, property damage charges, and similar costs.

This category of receivables can also be significant and requires staff time and other association resources to manage, including the preparation and mailing of statements to owners with balances of $1 or more, as required. Below is a summary of these balances: Fiscal Year-End 2025 Total: $186,000.18 for 504 units.

Fiscal Year-End 2026 Total: $163,182.13 for 293 units.

Current Fiscal Year Other Accounts Receivable Balances as of May 31, 2026: $166,299.58 for 264 units.

If you receive a statement for a balance owed, please do not ignore it. Prompt action helps reduce costs for the entire community.

WG COLLECTIONS POLICY FAQ Payments & Due Dates

When is my HOA payment due?

Your monthly assessment is due on the 1st of each month.

When is my payment considered late?

If your payment is not received in full, it becomes past due immediately, and your account is in default on and after the 16th of the month.

What if I forget to include my unit information?

Your payment may not be applied until the Association can identify your account.

Fees & Charges

Will I be charged a late fee?

Yes. A $20 late fee may be added if your balance is $250 or more on or after the 16th of the month.

Is interest charged on unpaid balances?

Yes. Interest accrues at 8% annually on delinquent balances.

Are there other costs if I don’t pay?

HIGH LINE CANAL CONSTRUCTION PROJECT UPDATE Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) has confirmed that tree protection elements are being installed along the Dayton-toHavana segment, where the project will begin. DPR does not yet have an anticipated timeline for the Windsor Gardens section; however, the contractor has been asked to complete this portion last, when the weather is cooler. There is no guarantee regarding the contractor’s sequence of work, and DPR will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

Once work begins in the Windsor Gardens section, DPR will implement the planned detour route through the community. The detour is expected to follow South Clinton Street to East Alameda Avenue, with pedestrians using the sidewalk along South Clinton Street and bicyclists using the street on East Alameda Avenue.

The project is still expected to last approximately 11 to 12 months, with the goal of completing it by the second quarter of 2027.

From the General Manager continued MAINTENANCE & GROUNDS UPDATES CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

Two new signs were installed in parking lot 1.

Vero Fiber Network: Vero ran the last underground boring between buildings 62 and 68 under the road by the tower. The sewer line to building 60 was hit as the drill was being removed. The sewer line was permanently repaired, and a double cleanout was added for future access to the sewer pipe for auguring or jetting.

All evaporative coolers have been serviced.

Underground Garages Project: Four broken cables were discovered on the east edge parallel to upper parking lot 24. A bridge was erected behind building 64 where the contractor had to remove a sidewalk and trench out the edge of the parking lot.

Roof and Gutter Replacements: Replacements are completed at buildings 36, 40, 46, and 49. Roofing replacement at building 65 started on June 18 and is scheduled to be completed on June 30, weather permitting.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE PROJECTS An underground leak in a domestic hot line was repaired. A domestic water pipe leak in the wall of a first-floor unit in building 60 was repaired. An under-floor hot supply line in building 8 that was leaking into the sewer line was repaired.

PAINTING Repairs to the first-floor exterior building paint on the buildings on the outside loop continue and include scraping, priming, and topcoating. Buildings 4 to 42 are complete.

We continue patching holes from the gutter replacement project and then priming and painting. We have completed parking lots 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15 and will finish lot 13 soon. Parking lot 14 was patched and primed before we topcoated. Parking lot 12 remains to be completed.

We fixed a couple of soffits. One for building 84 included removing the debris that was packed in from the pine tree. We then skimmed and painted the length of the soffit. While we had the lift there, the grounds crew trimmed back the overhanging branches that were dumping pine needles in the gutter.

Ongoing drywall repairs and work orders.

RECREATIONAL FACILITIES PROJECTS

The master boiler and mixing valve were repaired in building 22.

The boiler room floor drain was replaced in building 55.

The golf course women's restroom paper towel dispenser was rehung, and plumbing repairs were completed on the golf cart tire cleaning hose attachment. Efforts are underway to replace the non-functioning shoe cleaner, and janitorial staff were assigned responsibility for maintaining cleanliness around the pro shop entrance rugs.

An air handler electrical relay contactor was replaced in building 13.

The auditorium kitchen's ice machine door was repaired.

The emergency phone line in the elevator for the administration office was replaced. The elevator fire recall system was repaired in building 58.

Maintenance installed no-smoking and no-vaping signage at the pool and coordinated the installed new outdoor pool awnings.

The hot water system in building 65 has been replaced, and we are currently replacing the hot water system in building 51.

A new filter was installed on the hot tub.

Repairs have been completed in parking lot 13, where a vehicle ran into two garages.

No smoking / no-vaping signs will be added to the patio area outside the billiard room, due to reported smoking, particularly during the evening hours.

Proposed Revisions to the Community Center Facilities Rental and Use Policy The proposed revisions to sections 3 and 5 of the Community Center Facilities Rental and Use Policy published below will be voted on by the board of directors at their meeting on July 23, 2026,(details on page 3). The proposed additons are in CAPS (not in bold) and deleted language is in strike type. If you have questions or comments about the proposed revised policy, please email them to board@ wgamail.com or mail a letter to 595 S. Clinton Street, Denver, CO 80247. Letters may also be dropped off at the association office. The deadline to submit comments is July 22, 2026.

PEDESTRIAN RULES Dear Cop Shop: I was driving in Windsor Gardens and almost hit a person walking in the street. Isn’t that illegal?

Wondering Dear Wondering: If there are no sidewalks, the street may be the only option for pedestrians; however, there appear to be ample sidewalks in your community.

Pedestrians and vehicles must all follow certain basic rules.

Pedestrians have the right-of-way in crosswalks and intersections when traffic signals indicate it is safe to cross, even if there are no crosswalk markings, according to the Department of Transportation. If crossing outside a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, pedestrians must yield to all vehicles. Crossing

outside of a crosswalk or intersection with crossing signals (e.g., in the middle of a block or diagonally from corner to corner) can result in a ticket for jaywalking.

Granted, Windsor Gardens is a senior community, but it has public/city streets. You have a public golf course and restaurant, public events like art shows, and public transportation. There are countless deliveries of goods and food, ride shares and emergency vehicles all sharing roads lined with parked vehicles, pedestrians, motorized wheelchairs, scooters and bikes, many of which make no sound.

So, walking in the street? Maybe if there are no sidewalks or blocked sections of sidewalk.

Ask yourself: Am I a good pedestrian? Am I a safe driver? Am I aware?

Emerald Greens Continues to Thrive From Tammy Tafoya-Paredes, Assistant General Manager There's a lot to be proud of at Emerald Greens Golf Club! Over the past year, the course has continued to grow and attract golfers from both within and outside our community.

The golf shop has been busy promoting Emerald Greens through tournaments, special events, school partnerships and youth programs. These activities have brought many new golfers to the course and helped increase awareness of everything Emerald Greens has to offer.

One of the biggest reasons for this success is the dedicated staff. From the golf manager to the golf shop staff to the maintenance crew, everyone works hard to make golfers feel welcome and ensure they have a great experience. Friendly service and familiar faces keep people coming back, and many visitors have become regular players.

Emerald Greens Golf Club: Denver's Premier Short Course Emerald Greens is a scenic and walkable 9-hole, par-3 golf course with a putting green, chipping green and practice area.

Uniquely situated, the beautifully maintained course winds around and over Windsor Gardens’ sparkling lake, bringing water into play on many of the holes. Players of all abilities are welcome to enjoy the fairways lined with lush, mature trees, challenging water hazards, bunkers and rolling greens.

The course has also made several improvements behind the scenes. A new tee-time and check-in system has helped daily operations run more smoothly, and the updated website makes it easier for golfers to find information and book tee times.

Emerald Greens continues to host tournaments and special events that bring new visitors to the course. Local high school golf teams use the facility for practices and matches, and PGA Junior League events have introduced many young golfers and their families to the course.

These activities also showcase our beautiful community to visitors who might not have otherwise discovered Emerald Greens.

Looking ahead, our goal remains clear: to provide an outstanding golf experience, warmly welcome every visitor, and continue serving as a positive part of our community. Thank you to all the residents, golfers, staff, and volunteers who help make Emerald Greens such a special place.

To the Rescue Recently on a Saturday, I was in the West Community Gardens with my daughter and a friend. It was a 90-degree day, and I was working in the sun. When I got overheated and fainted, the girls called Community Response.

Right away, Community Response Officers Angelo and Josias showed up. I can't praise them enough for their knowledgeable

care. Soon, it was decided that I should go to the hospital, and I was transported to the emergency room. It ended up that I had had a heat stroke.

I write this especially to thank the Community Response officers and to warn others not to overdo it in the sun and drink lots of water.

ACTIVITIES OUTDOOR POOL Po o l Guest Waiver s & Wr istbands We would like to remind everyone about the importance of guest waivers and wristbands.

GUEST WAIVER FORM All guests using the outdoor pool are required to complete a guest waiver form before entering the pool area and must obtain and wear a pool wristband during their visit. Wristbands help staff easily identify authorized guests and ensure a safe environment for everyone enjoying the facility.

GUEST WRISTBAND REMINDERS Visible at all times: Wristbands must be worn on the wrist and remain visible while in the outdoor pool area.

Replacement: Lost wristbands should be reported to the activities office as soon as possible for replacement assistance.

Shared responsibility: Residents are responsible for ensuring all guests in their party have completed the required waiver and are wearing wristbands before entering the pool area.

Out d o o r Po o l Hour s, Guests & Childr en's S wim Ti m e OUTDOOR POOL OPERATING HOURS The pool is open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. for residents only and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. for residents and guests ages 17 and older.

Children’s swim is 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. daily for guests under the age of 17 only when a lifeguard is on duty.

The pool area is closed daily from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. for cleaning and mowing.

Lifeguards are only on duty during children’s swim from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. daily. Swim at your own risk during the times without a lifeguard.

GUEST PRIVILEGES FOR THE OUTDOOR POOL It is mandatory that all guests who wish to use the pool facilities sign a guest pool waiver. Minors must have their guest pool waiver signed by their guardians. Please have your guests sign the pool waiver before they come to the pool. Stop by the administrative or activities office for assistance.

Guests are defined as those who do not possess a WG activities card but are invited and accompanied at all times by a resident.

Residents will be charged $1 for each guest and must pay in cash at the time of use by depositing the funds into the cash box.

The number of guests for each resident is limited to four per visit.

All guests must be accompanied by their Windsor Gardens resident host.

Residents are not to loan their guests their activities card.

Children aged 17 or older may use the outdoor pool during regular hours.

Children under the age of 17 may only use the outdoor pool during “child swim hours” between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. if a lifeguard is present.

Children under the age of 7 must always be within arm’s reach of the supervising adult resident.

LIFEGUARDS & CHILDREN'S SWIM TIME Windsor Gardens pools are swim-at-your-own-risk for residents and their guests aged 17 or older. Lifeguards have been hired to allow children to swim daily from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., when kiddos under 17 years can come and swim with a Windsor Gardens resident.

We will publish updates in Windsor Life, on the WG Facebook page (www.facebook.com/WindsorGardensAssociation), on the association website and on flyers at the community center. And feel free to contact the Activities Office for any updates!

INDOOR POOL, THERAPY POOL & SAUNAS The indoor aquatic facilities (indoor pool, saunas and therapy pool) are open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily for residents only. Regular hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. An extended-hours waiver must be signed to access the indoor pool facilities during extended hours, which are 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The indoor facilities are closed for cleaning every Monday from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and all day every Thursday (closure begins Wednesday at 4 p.m., and the pool reopens Friday at 6 a.m.).

These areas are also closed on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. during the aqua fitness classes.

Signed waivers allow residents access to the pool facilities during the following extended hours: Indoor Pool, Therapy Pool and Saunas: 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily for residents only.

Outdoor Pool: 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. daily for residents only and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily for residents and guests aged 17 and older.

Effective June 1, if you have not submitted the required waiver form, you will be denied access to the pool facilities after regular hours, including the indoor, outdoor, and therapy pools and locker rooms.

The waiver form is available for pickup at the administrative office, the activities office and the fitness center. Drop off your signed waiver in person at the administrative office or place it in the white WG drop-off box by the flagpole in front of the administrative office.

FITNESS CENTER HOURS: The fitness center is open 24/7 for residents with an ID badge keycard, except during cleaning times. It is closed for cleaning on Tuesdays and Fridays from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

ORIENTATION: Join instructor Marie O’Hagan for FREE instruction on fitness center and gym equipment. June dates and times: Thursdays, July 9, 16, and 23, at 3:45 p.m. and Monday, July 27, at 11 a.m.

PERSONAL TRAINING: Residents can register for personal training sessions with our very own WG Instructor, Marie! There are 3-, 5-, and 10-session options available for purchase. This program allows you to reach your fitness goals one-on-one with Marie and can be scheduled at a time that works for you! For more information, please visit the Activities Office.

WG CLASSES WG classes are free for WG residents. No sign-up is required; you can drop in anytime. Support your favorite classes, as we require a minimum of 10 students per class to maintain our instructors. WG LIBRARY The Windsor Gardens Library is located in CENTERPOINT on the second floor and is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Windsor Writers Not Tonight, D-e-e-r! by Sharon Buchan I once was a gardener. My vegetables, roses, and some flowers were surrounded by a fence in the backyard. Many other flowers were in front of the house with no fence.

I was warned by friends that the deer would eat my flowers, but being a know-it-all, I disagreed. “Oh no,” I said. “They don’t eat tulips or digitalis, better known as foxglove, because it will kill them. It is used in humans to treat heart problems by making the heart beat faster.

I returned home one day and found that all the tops of the tulips, daffodils, and iris were gone. Also, they had eaten the digitalis down to a nub. Since I was in the garden club, I asked my fellow master gardener friends what to do about our dear “deer” buddies.

Their advice was this: “You must buy this product called: ‘NOT TONIGHT DEER’”. It is coyote urine, and you spray it on the flowers. So, I replanted, and when all was glorious and with garden gloves on, I said, “Let us spray.” Then I sprayed and sprayed and prayed and prayed.

Two days later, the deer helped themselves to dessert. Once again, I asked for advice and one fellow gardener said, “I just have my husband go out at night and spray with his appendage.”

“WOW,” I said. “And that worked?” The answer was “No, but I just

like to watch him out there spraying, and that means there is no lid to be left up on the toilet.”

Thank goodness I had planted everything else in the backyard and the deer did not scale the fence to gobble them up. I knew they loved roses.

But, of course, my husband left the gate door open, and they ate the roses, the clematis, the morning glories, the fuchsia, the lettuce, and they tried to eat the corn-on-the-cob. They even came up on the deck and had the gall to look in my dining room window with a carrot stem hanging out of their mouth.

Me running out on the deck with my fly swatter did little or no good. In fact, I was sure they were laughing at me. I went back into the house and cut up an apple. Returning to the deck, I walked backwards, tempting them with the apple. They went through the gate as I threw the remaining apple about a foot away. I slammed the gate closed and leaned against it.

That very evening, my husband was feeling romantic, and when he looked deep into my eyes and said, “How about a roll in the hay?” I answered, “How about you take a roll in our decimated garden?” And then I quietly and demurely yelled, “Not tonight, D-E-A-R!”

Do These Feathers Make Me Look Fat? by Janice Morrow The best practical joke I ever played was purely by accident.

Several years ago, I bought a parakeet from a woman who bred parakeets. She showed me a young green and yellow one, and when I put my finger out to him, he didn’t hesitate and stepped right onto my finger. To be so tiny, seemed very brave to me, so I named him Fearless. The woman gave me instructions on care, feeding, and most importantly, how to teach him to talk.

Fearless was a quick learner. Within the next three months, he was saying my silly quotes like, “What seems to be the problem, officer?” “Are you sure you want to wear that out in public?” “Oh look! It’s Elvis!” “Do these feathers make me look fat?” and “Head for the hills, boys, the dam’s busted!” That’s not even counting all the movie quotes I taught him.

“What we have here is a failure to communicate.” “Badges? We don’t need no stinkin’ badges!” “Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown.”

“I’ll have what she’s having.” “Attica! Attica!” (What I found to be hilarious was that occasionally, when I’d put him in his cage for the night, he’d go off into his Attica rant).

That winter, my mother called to say she and two of her sisters were planning a road trip this coming summer. They’re going to visit various relatives, and Denver was on the agenda. I was thrilled, as I hadn’t seen Aunt Lula and Aunt Johnnie Lee for ages.

I had plenty of room for them, so the date was set. I immediately told Fearless the good news, to which he responded, “Why don’t you ever let me drive?”

I can’t pinpoint the exact moment I had this idea: I will teach Fearless a lot of syrupy “I love you, Grandma Katie.” “Grandma Katie, you’re the best grandma ever,” ad nauseam, and would then deny that I taught him to say it.

Finally! Mother and my aunts arrived, lots of hugs, catching up, fixing and then eating dinner, and at long last, we settled in for a game of Canasta, and the introduction to Fearless. I let him out of his cage, so he could check everyone out. About 20 minutes into the game, Fearless lands on Mother’s shoulder, and just jabbers away. Suddenly Mother gasps, and says, “Did you hear that?

Fearless said he loves me! He called me grandma!’” My aunts burst out laughing, and I put on my nicest patronizing face and assured Mother that Fearless couldn’t have said that without being taught to say it. Mother finally gave up and decided she must have misheard him.

This scenario played out about four more times, emotions escalating each time. Aunt Lula told mother she must have caught “the old-timer’s disease.” Aunt Johnnie Lee kept tsk-tsking over Katie losing her marbles, and Mother threatened both with having to take a bus back to Houston, instead of riding with her, and me laughing so hard I couldn’t speak. Eventually sanity was restored, the card game was renewed, and Fearless became a superstar.
