A community is much more than just buildings, landscaping and amenities.

It is the people who care, serve and give of themselves who truly make our Windsor Gardens community feel like home.

Every day, our staff and volunteers work tirelessly, both behind the scenes and in plain sight, to create a welcoming, safe and enjoyable environment for everyone. From maintaining our grounds and facilities to organizing events, serving on committees, greeting neighbors, and lending a helping hand, these individuals dedicate countless hours and energy to enriching the lives of all residents.

Their efforts often go unnoticed, as much of what they do happens quietly and consistently. Yet, every clean hallway, well-maintained garden, successful social event, and act of kindness reflects their dedication and commitment to our community. Beyond their daily contributions, they shine during major events, going above and beyond. Most recently, our July 1 Stars, Stripes and Summer Nights Celebration, led by Tammy Tafoya-Paredes with valuable support from Steve Follweiler and Brendan Hazel, as well as many other staff members, volunteers, sponsors, and residents, was continued on page 4

Mark Jay Jackson passed away on June 20, 2026, at the age of 71. A native of Green Bay, Wisc., and born on September 9, 1954, Mark’s family moved to Denver when he was young and lived on Denver’s East and West Sides. He attended George Washington High School and CU-Boulder.

Mark and Idi Jackson were married in 1982 at Rodef Shalom.

He was a stock trader for 30 years. He was also an author and motivational speaker and later became a peer counselor at a substance abuse and mental health rehabilitation facility.

The submission deadline is the 15th of the month for consideration for publication in the next month's issue.

All letters must include the writer’s name, address and phone number for verification purposes. The writer’s name will be included with those letters that are published. Anonymous letters will not be considered.

Letters are published based on space availability. Letters are limited to 300 words and may be edited for grammar, clarity, civility and space.

Stars, Stripes and Summer Nights The words “Thank You” seem almost inadequate to express the gratitude of the Windsor Gardens community for the Stars, Stripes and Summer Nights celebration on July 1. There was music for everyone, classic cars, souvenirs, food and, most significant, the fantastic drone show. The number of hours poured into planning, scheduling, designing the beautiful logo, souvenirs (at extremely reasonable prices) and setting up (and taking down!) the booths, tents, and stage was the result of total teamwork and cooperation by the entire WG staff. Special thanks to Tammy, Steve, Brendan and Karen for coordinating the event!

Volunteers and staff share a common goal: to create a place where neighbors feel connected, respected, and proud to call home. They bring creativity, compassion, and a spirit of service that strengthens our sense of community and reminds us that we all play a role in making this a special place to live.

To our staff members, thank you for your professionalism, hard work, and daily efforts to keep our community running smoothly.

To our volunteers, thank you for generously giving your time and talents. Your willingness to serve makes a meaningful difference and demonstrates the true spirit of neighbor helping neighbor.

As we celebrate those who contribute so much, we also encourage others to consider getting involved. Whether it’s serving on the

Board, a committee, helping with an event, welcoming new residents, or sharing a special skill, every contribution matters.

Even a small act of service can have a lasting impact.

A few individuals alone cannot create a successful and enjoyable community—it is built by many caring hands and hearts working together. Plant More Trees

Yoga was something I began in 2001. In 2025, chair yoga classes started at Windsor Gardens. I was not sure how I would experience chair yoga. After all, wasn’t an important part of yoga moving between standing poses and floor poses? Was yoga possible while sitting in a chair? I had to know, so I gave chair yoga a try.

Here’s what I learned: Chair yoga adapts traditional yoga poses to a seated position. It includes standing poses where the chair helps with maintaining balance.

The water situation is dire, our grass is dying, and we are experiencing extreme heat. There is no easy solution to these issues, but there is a step we can take. Trees! The right trees can survive drought conditions, will use less water than grass over the years, and will provide shade and cooling.

WG’s yoga instructor, Elena, tells her students in all her classes to ask their bodies to do only what they can. Allow your body to practice movement, flexibility, balance, and stability. Pay no attention to what others do. Don’t worry about doing exactly what the instructor does. Elena reminds us that if a position or movement is difficult, don’t do it. If you feel pain, stop. Don’t do it.

An integral part of any yoga includes calming meditation. However, for Elena, it’s also about adding a bit of humor now and then.

Chair yoga is a journey. If you decide to try chair yoga, it will be your journey, and yours alone.

In Denver, a tree canopy reduces temperatures by as much as 10° compared to areas without one.

Hackberry trees are fast-growing native shade trees that can endure high temperatures and irregular watering. The Chinese Pistache not only features deep roots needed for dry summers but also provides brilliant red fall foliage. The Bur Oak is one of the hardiest long-lived shade trees. And there are other examples of drought-resistant species, such as the Eastern Redcedar, Ginkgo, and Desert Willow.

The point is simply this: we should plant MANY more trees at Windsor Gardens.

laundry rooms, community spaces, and pool areas. This applies to cigarettes, marijuana, and other smoking materials.

When considering new tree plantings, the association must evaluate several factors, including water availability, soil conditions, mature tree size, proximity to buildings and underground utilities, longterm maintenance needs, safety, and cost.

Smoking is permitted inside individual condominium units.

Residents who smoke indoors are encouraged to be considerate of their neighbors and take reasonable steps to help prevent smoke and odors from entering hallways or nearby units.

Our grounds team continues to review areas throughout the community where trees may need to be removed, replaced or added. As part of that process, staff will consider drought-tolerant species and locations where additional trees could provide the greatest long-term benefit without creating future maintenance or infrastructure concerns.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in following the association’s policy and helping maintain a respectful and comfortable community for all residents.

We are also pleased to share that our grounds team planted 13 new trees just a few weeks ago, including bur oak and hackberry trees.

Tammy Tafoya-Paredes, Assistant General Manager Adherence to Association Policy: Don’t Smoke on Lanais As the summer heat cools off in the evening, more residents are going out to their lanais and smoking either cigarettes or weed.

All I am asking is that residents adhere to the [association policy] that states residents cannot smoke on their lanais. Please practice common courtesy with your neighbors. Thank you.

Mary McDonald Response to “Adherence to Association Policy: Don’t Smoke on Lanais” Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns. We understand that smoke and odors can affect nearby neighbors, particularly during the warmer months, when residents may have their windows or doors open or spend more time outdoors.

As a reminder to all residents, Windsor Gardens’ smoking policy prohibits smoking in all common and limited common areas, including lanais, balconies, garages, hallways, stairwells, elevators,

We do activities together, have clubs, and meet people in our buildings. We know their faces and their names; we greet each other and ask about their health. If we are lucky, we get to know more than their face or name.

Talking to a person is not being nosy; it is taking an interest, a true interest in the person and their life, showing care.

There are a lot of lonely people here in Windsor Gardens, some with no one to be with. No one to celebrate holidays with or who calls to see how they’re doing. I have written two remembrances for Windsor Life, and I had to do a lot of research to find anything about my neighbors' lives. With some help, I found remarkable facts about the first person’s hobbies, courage and drive. The second person was even harder to research. Their landlord found one picture and some papers; that was all, which opened a lot of questions about his family that can never be answered.

Get to know your neighbors and let them get to know you. People have wonderful stories: where they have lived, the things they have done and seen in their lives. You don’t need to know and share the bad or the skeletons in the closet, but there are so many rich and beautiful things in your life that can be shared, not buried away.

Sometimes people can really surprise you. I had a friend who was this frail, tiny lady and found out she was in the FBI. You would never have guessed by looking at her.

Be kind to one another; you never know what someone else is going through right now. Get to know each other, for them and for you.

Board Candidate Notices of Candidacy Due by August 21, 4:30 p.m.

Board candidate notices of candidacy, with summaries of their background and experience, are due no later than August 21, 2026, 4:30 p.m., along with a candidate photo. Candidate summaries and photos will be published in Windsor Life and in election materials.

Notice of candidacy forms are available in the administration office, and candidates may provide their own high-resolution photo, or the administration office can take one. Recent changes to the association bylaws clarified the eligibility requirements for board candidates.

MEET THE CANDIDATES DURING THE BRC MEETING September 16, 3 p.m., CenterPoint

Each candidate must submit to the association a written summary of their background and experience, not to exceed 350 words, on or before this date. Candidates may also submit a photograph of themselves for reproduction on election posters and materials.

The association will take a picture of the candidate if one is not provided.

A formal meet-the-candidates event will occur during the Building Representative Committee meeting on Wednesday, September 16, at 3 p.m. in CenterPoint. Door prizes and refreshments will be provided.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL TO MEET THE CANDIDATES September 3, 5:30 p.m., WG Auditorium The community is invited to meet the candidates at an ice cream social in the auditorium. This is a casual event and an opportunity for owners to meet the candidates and current board members, ask questions, and enjoy an ice cream treat. From the General Manager UPDATED BYLAWS ADOPTED This July, the Windsor Gardens Board of Directors adopted a comprehensive update to the association's bylaws. The revisions modernize the governing document, align it with current Colorado law, clarify existing procedures, and strengthen governance, transparency and accountability throughout the community.

As Windsor Gardens enters board election season, residents interested in serving on the board should take note of several important changes affecting board qualifications, elections and board service.

Clarified Board Candidate Qualifications The revised bylaws establish clearer eligibility requirements for board candidates. To serve on the board, a candidate must: Be a member of the association in good standing; Be at least 18 years old and a natural person (if any unit is owned by a partnership, corporation, trust or other entity, any one partner, officer or trustee of that entity will be eligible to serve as a director); Have no familial relationship with, or joint ownership of the same unit with any other board member; Have no felony charges or convictions, or any other convictions that would prevent the association from purchasing the fidelity bond coverage or other insurance required by statute or would terminate the association’s existing fidelity bond coverage or insurance; Have no adversarial proceeding of any type against the association; Provide all information required to comply with statutory obligations; Be capable of participating in and fulfilling their duties and obligations to the association; Sign the Windsor Gardens Board Member Code of Ethics Policy, as may be amended.

These provisions are intended to promote effective governance, minimize conflicts of interest, and help ensure board members can successfully carry out their responsibilities on behalf of the community.

New Term Limits for Board Members One of the most notable changes to the bylaws is the introduction of term limits for the members of the board of directors. Under the revised bylaws, a director who has served two full terms will be ineligible for re-election by the membership. This change is intended to encourage broader participation and leadership opportunities while maintaining continuity and institutional knowledge on the board.

Elimination of Cumulative Voting One of the most important changes to the board election provisions in the bylaws is the elimination of cumulative voting. Under the previous bylaws, cumulative voting was permitted. The revised bylaws eliminate cumulative voting and provide that neither

cumulative nor fractional voting is allowed. Directors will continue to be elected by receiving the highest number of votes cast for the available positions. This change simplifies the election process and creates a more traditional voting structure for board elections.

Updated Candidate Information Process Candidates will continue to submit information about their background and experience for distribution to the membership; however, the nomination and petition process has been eliminated.

The revised bylaws establish a process for candidates to submit a summary statement of up to 350 words and a photograph for election materials. This candidate information will be published before voting begins.

Secret Ballots and Modernized Voting The revised bylaws formally require secret ballots in contested board elections and allow elections to be conducted by mail or electronic ballot. Detailed procedures were added to ensure election integrity, transparency and voter confidentiality.

Attendance and Accountability Standards The updated bylaws establish clearer expectations for board participation. Directors are expected to attend board and assigned committee meetings, and repeated unexcused absences may result in disqualification from board service. Additional provisions address ethics compliance and conflicts of interest.

Additional Highlights of the Bylaws Revisions In addition to board election-related changes, the revised bylaws include several other important updates: Expanded use of electronic communications, including email, website postings, and electronic voting options.

Creation of a formal "good standing" definition to clarify membership rights and responsibilities.

Updated procedures governing member meetings, notices, proxies, voting and special meetings.

Enhanced provisions addressing member conduct, facility access privileges and community safety concerns.

Strengthened long-range financial planning aligned with the 2011 standing policy by requiring professional reserve studies every three to five years.

Adoption of a formal budget ratification process that provides members an opportunity to review and vote on the annual budget to align with Colorado law and in practice at WG since 2019.

Expanded financial transparency and reporting requirements, including enhanced audit and disclosure provisions.

Clarification of committee structures, responsibilities and membership requirements.

From the golf tournament and pool party to hot dogs fresh off the grill, the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” an impressive car show, outstanding live music, food trucks, the beer and wine garden, and the restaurant, there was truly something for everyone to enjoy. Residents and guests gathered at vendor booths, played games with staff, shopped for event merchandise and keepsakes, and celebrated together as a community. Some took a break to watch the World Cup match and cool off in the auditorium, while others made their way to the golf course to find the perfect spot for the spectacular drone show that brought the evening to an unforgettable close.

This event showcased the very best of Windsor Gardens: community, teamwork, creativity and dedication. The joy, excitement and appreciation expressed by everyone who attended were a direct reflection of the countless hours, hard work and passion each of you invested in making every detail come together seamlessly.

GROUNDS

Vero Fiber Network: Vero is down to the last seven buildings installing their Invisilight wiring system in the common area hallways.

The lake is currently at its minimum operating level. Hand watering and hoses are being used as needed, and golf carts have been asked to stop operating at noon to help reduce wear on the course.

Roof and Gutter Replacements are completed at buildings 65 and 66. Roofing replacement is complete at building 78.

The flower beds look good overall and have held up well despite rabbit activity. Staff is monitoring and addressing the arrival of Japanese beetles. Second spray app for Japanese beetles completed.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE PROJECTS Outside sewer mainline double cleanouts were added at building 62.

Elevator emergency phone lines were repaired in buildings 49, 60 and 62.

A new air handler blower shaft was installed at building 54, and two new air handler blower shaft bearings were installed at building 29.

Tree removals will continue throughout August, weather and equipment permitting. A contractor, Davey Tree Company, will be treating elm trees. The treatment is intended to help control scale.

The product being applied is an oil-based treatment that coats the tree's affected areas and helps prevent further damage.

Repaired mainline sewer backups at buildings 84 and 59.

Flagstone is being installed in worn areas, particularly near the entrances to lanai stoops.

Concrete end stairwell step repairs were completed at buildings 55 and 56.

Due to drought conditions, mowing will be completed on an asneeded basis—likely every other week.

An underfloor leak in the hot water supply at building 12 was repaired.

Grading and irrigation work continues near buildings 60 and 62.

The heat exchanger replumbing was completed at building 51, and is in process at building 53.

Weeds tend to thrive during drought conditions; weed management will be a primary focus through August.

PAINTING Almost complete with patching holes from the gutter replacement project.

Approximately 99% of the mulch installation has been completed.

Planning is underway for upcoming improvement projects at buildings 62, 55, and 38.

WG Board in Motion On June 22, 2026, the WG Board of Directors passed an electronic motion to approve a reasonable accommodation request.

On July 14, 2026, the board passed an electronic motion to adopt the revised association bylaws.

At a special board meeting on July 14, 2026, the board entered executive session to discuss a covenant enforcement matter. A motion was made to decline the proposed settlement agreement and proceed with litigation.

At a special board meeting on July 15, 2026, the board entered executive session to discuss newly outlined settlement terms related to a covenant enforcement matter as an alternative to proceeding with the scheduled hearing. A motion was made to accept the outlined terms of the settlement agreement. .

At their regular board meeting on July 23, 2026, the board passed the following motions.

Entrance Tower Project Update From Tammy Tafoya-Paredes, Assistant General Manager We are pleased to report that the engineer’s inspection of the structural bolts at the base of the WG entrance tower is now complete. The bolts, concrete structure and anchoring system were all found to be in good condition. Minor reinforcement improvements and new access points will be added to support the project and make future maintenance easier.

Moving the Design Forward The tower design previously shared with residents remains the same. It features graceful architectural elements that create a sense of movement while honoring the spirit of the original “Eternal Youth” sculpture. Denver Arts and Venues has approved the design as a work of art, allowing the project to continue through the permitting process.

Programmable LED lighting will add warmth and personality to the tower, with the ability to display seasonal colors and recognize holidays and special community celebrations. A lighting analysis has also been completed to ensure the tower is beautifully illuminated while minimizing any impact on nearby buildings and units.

Construction drawings are nearly complete. Once the final

engineering calculations and stamped drawings are ready, the plans will be submitted to the City and County of Denver for permit review. Contractor bidding may begin during the review process to help keep the project moving forward.

Entrance Flagpoles Removal The two flagpoles near the entrance tower have been removed. We understand that the flags have long been a familiar and meaningful part of our community’s entrance. The tower committee carefully considered the ongoing maintenance, lighting, wind damage, and safe staff access required in properly caring for and displaying the flags before voting unanimously to remove the flagpoles.

Although the entrance flagpoles have been removed, the U.S. flag will continue to fly proudly on the flagpole near the Windsor Gardens administrative office, where it is regularly maintained and displayed with the care and respect it deserves.

Next Steps Several steps remain, including permitting, contractor selection and construction scheduling, but each brings us closer to restoring this treasured Windsor Gardens landmark. We appreciate our residents’ patience and support, and we look forward to sharing more exciting updates along the way!

Considering Renting Your Windsor Gardens Unit?

With today's real estate market, many Windsor Gardens owners are exploring different options for homes that have remained on the market longer than expected. For some, renting their unit provides an opportunity to offset carrying costs while waiting for market conditions to improve.

Owners who decline three consecutive opportunities to rent will be removed from the waitlist and must wait 12 months before submitting a new request, unless the board approves an earlier exception.

Minimum Lease Term Initial leases must be for a minimum of 12 full months. Short-term rentals or advertising a unit for daily, weekly, or monthly stays are prohibited.

The association has seen an increase in rental request forms submitted after a lease has already been signed, sometimes after tenants have already moved into If you are considering the unit. Unfortunately, this results in covenant renting your unit, it's enforcement action against the owner and creates important to understand unnecessary confusion for staff and residents.

Age Restrictions

If you are considering renting your unit, it's important to understand the association's rental cap, rental request process and other requirements as well as Denver’s rental licensing requirements before signing a lease.

20% Rental Cap The association's declaration limits rentals to 20% of the community at any given time. With 2,689 units in Windsor Gardens, no more than 538 units may be leased simultaneously. Once that limit has been reached, owners wishing to rent will be placed on a waitlist.

Once an owner's rental approval has been granted:

The owner has 45 days to lease their unit.

A one-time 45-day extension may be requested if additional time is needed.

If the unit is not leased within the approved timeframe, it will return to the bottom of the waitlist.

Windsor Gardens is an age-restricted independent living community. The primary head of household must be 55 years of age or older, and no one under the age of 17 may reside in a unit.

All new residents. including tenants, are required to attend an in-person orientation before moving in or within 30 days of occupancy. At orientation, residents will receive their Windsor Gardens photo ID/activity card and parking permit. Tenants should bring a valid driver's license and current vehicle registration.

Owner Responsibilities Property owners remain responsible for ensuring their tenants comply with the Windsor Gardens declaration, bylaws, articles of incorporation, and all association policies, rules, and regulations.

Owners are also required to provide these governing documents to their tenants.

Denver Rental Licensing In addition to Windsor Gardens requirements, owners must comply with all applicable City and County of Denver residential rental regulations, including obtaining a residential rental property license before leasing their property. Additional information is available through the City and County of Denver's residential rental property licensing program.

Community Response Support during Medical Emergencies From Andy Vickery, Community Response Captain/EMT When residents call 911 for a medical emergency, they may be surprised to see a community response officer arrive alongside firefighters, paramedics, or law enforcement personnel. All community response officers are trained emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and are dispatched to medical emergencies throughout Windsor Gardens. Because community response officers are already on patrol throughout the community, they can often arrive quickly and begin providing care while additional emergency resources are en route.

911 dispatchers determine the appropriate resources needed based on the information provided by the caller. Community Response officers are routinely dispatched to medical emergencies as part of that coordinated response. Their presence helps ensure that trained personnel arrive quickly to assist patients and support other emergency responders.

Beyond providing immediate medical care, community response officers help coordinate scenes, gather information from patients and family members, and assist fire and EMS crews upon their arrival. Emergency scene safety is the highest priority during any emergency response, and community response officers play a vital role in establishing and maintaining a safe environment for patients, residents, and responding personnel. This team-based approach allows emergency services to work together efficiently and effectively, ensuring residents receive the highest level of care possible during a medical emergency.

Whether responding to a sudden illness, injury, or other urgent medical situation, community response officers are committed to serving the community and providing assistance when it is needed most. Their ability to quickly assess situations, provide immediate care, and support arriving emergency personnel makes them an important part of Windsor Gardens' overall emergency response system.

POOL As the season begins to wind down, please keep these important dates in mind:

The final weekday children’s swim will be Friday, August 14.

Lifeguards and children’s swim will continue on weekends through Sunday, September 13, 2026.

The outdoor pool will close for the season on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

Please enter and exit through the designated pool entrance. The back gate is reserved for emergencies and should not be used as a regular entrance or exit. Thank you for helping us keep the pool area safe and secure.

Swimwear Please choose swimwear that offers adequate coverage. Residents and guests should also wear appropriate footwear to prevent slips and falls around the pool area. Remember to shower thoroughly before entering the pools. This simple step helps keep the water clean and hygienic for everyone.

Considerate Behavior The pool is a place for exercise, relaxation, and socializing. To help maintain a welcoming environment, please avoid loud conversations, aggressive swimming, or other behavior that may disrupt those who are reading, relaxing, or enjoying a quiet conversation.

Inappropriate public displays of affection should be avoided.

Please also remember that seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis and may not be reserved for extended periods.

Pool Toys in the Outdoor Pool Floats and inflatable devices can add fun to pool time; however, residents should consider that larger toys may affect available space, visibility, and safety. Please select smaller, manageable inflatable items that do not block swimming areas or create obstacles for others.

Pool noodles and weights should remain in their designated pool area and be returned to the proper location after use. Moving equipment between the indoor and outdoor pools can result in one area having too few while the other has more than needed.

Alcohol Consumption in the Outdoor Pool Area Residents may responsibly consume alcohol in the outdoor pool area, provided they consider safety and community standards, and purchase it through the restaurant. Outside alcohol is not permitted.

THERAPY POOL AND DRY SAUNAS The therapy pool and dry saunas are intended for relaxation, rehabilitation and gentle exercise. Please respect the personal space of others and avoid loud conversations or disruptive behavior that could disrupt the peaceful atmosphere.

It is important to shower thoroughly before entering the therapy pool or saunas. This helps maintain a clean, hygienic and comfortable environment for everyone.

Wear swim attire in the saunas at all times, and shower before use to remove any body odor or scents that may impact others.

When using a sauna, sit on a towel to prevent direct contact with the bench and minimize the spread of germs.

Pouring water on the heating unit in dry saunas is strictly prohibited, as these saunas are designed to function without water and pouring water on the equipment may cause damage or create a safety hazard.

FITNESS CENTER We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in following these guidelines to promote equal access, comfort and safety in the fitness center.

Please respect personal space when using the equipment. Give other residents ample room when they are exercising; avoid hovering too closely while waiting for a machine. We encourage kindness and patience, especially towards residents who require more time or assistance with equipment.

Wipe down machines and equipment after use to help maintain a clean and healthy environment.

Please minimize loud conversations and disruptive behaviors inside the fitness center.

Do not talk on your cell phone while in the fitness center. If you receive a call, move to the fitness center lobby to keep noise to a minimum. Music and videos on personal electronic devices should be enjoyed through headphones.

Please be considerate of others waiting to use the equipment.

Once you have completed your exercise or rest period, do not remain seated on a machine while using your phone or watching a personal electronic device.

By following these simple reminders and treating one another with courtesy, we can help keep Windsor Gardens’ recreational spaces safe, comfortable, and enjoyable for everyone.

Got Air? How to Keep Air Flowing Through Your Unit Adapted from a past article by Liz Morrison, Warehouse

Why Odors Can Occur

Your building's ventilation system brings fresh outdoor air into the building through a large intake vent located in the air-handling room. Large fans then distribute that air throughout the building.

The ventilation system is designed to pull air from the hallway, through your unit, and out through the bathroom exhaust vent. If this airflow path is blocked, odors may linger or enter from adjacent areas.

During the summer, the air is cooled and filtered before entering your unit. In the winter, it is heated and filtered. Fresh air enters under your unit door and moves through the unit before exiting through the bathroom exhaust vent.

To keep air circulating properly, it is important not to block this airflow: Keep the gap under your unit door clear.

Leave the bathroom exhaust vent uncovered.

Avoid blocking vents with furniture, boxes, or other items.

Opening windows or lanai doors may affect airflow patterns within the unit.

If the airflow path is interrupted, air may not circulate as designed.

This can contribute to odors lingering in the unit or moving between spaces.

If You Notice a Problem If you experience persistent odors, poor airflow, or believe the ventilation system is not operating correctly, please submit a maintenance request so the issue can be inspected, 303-3647485 ext. 1.

Like many golf courses throughout Colorado, Emerald Greens is experiencing the effects of hot, dry weather and ongoing water conservation efforts. To help protect the health of our turf, we have made a temporary adjustment concerning golf carts.

Electric golf carts are no longer available after 12 p.m. This change is intended to reduce stress on the course during the hottest part of the day, when the grass is most vulnerable. Since our leagues finish by noon and most golfers who regularly use carts play earlier in the day, we anticipate this change will have minimal impact.

Accommodation may still be made for residents with significant mobility or medical needs. If we receive sufficient rainfall, normal cart operations may resume later in the season.

Staying on designated walking paths whenever possible.

Carrying water and staying hydrated while golfing.

Taking advantage of the drinking fountains located at Hole 4 and the Hole 7 tee box, as well as beverages available in the golf shop.

WG Art Club Artist Profile Artist Jan Fitzpatrick Henry Thoreau wrote, “...true art is but the expression of our love of nature.” Jan Fitzpatrick finds inspiration for much of her art during hikes in Colorado’s high country, and she is passionate about Earth care and conservation.

After retiring from a 35-year career teaching chemistry and biology, Jan discovered her love for painting. She transitioned from watercolors to acrylics and then to oils, while moving from Pennsylvania to Colorado.

Now, she studies at the Curtis Center and Park Hill Art Club, exhibiting her work in local art shows.

Jan painted “The Road Out of Taos” in oils after visiting Taos Pueblo in late summer. Walking along the shaded dirt road to the sacred Blue Lake was a sobering experience for her, as she reflected on the land’s long and continuous habitation—longer than most places in North America.

40th Anniversary of the Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament Presentation "Ellis Shupe walked from shore to shore during the Great Peace March. She wore out five pairs of shoes, and all she took along fit in only two [milk] crates.

What an inspiration for us to explore with Ellis this powerful nostalgia, alive today in many senior hearts.

Ellis Shupe participated in the historic 3,700-mile Great Peace March from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. in 1986. She shared her experiences with the WG community on July 7.

These areas are also closed on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. during the aqua fitness classes.

EXTENDED-HOURS POOL FACILITIES ACCESS A signed extended-hours access pool-area waiver and release agreement is mandatory for any resident using the indoor or outdoor pools, deck areas, saunas, therapy pool, or locker rooms outside regular swimming and operating hours. Signed waivers allow residents access to the pool facilities during the following extended hours: Indoor Pool, Therapy Pool and Saunas: 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily for residents only.

Outdoor Pool: 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. daily for residents only and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily for residents and guests aged 17 and older.

If you have not submitted the required waiver form, you will be denied access to the pool facilities after regular hours, including the indoor, outdoor, and therapy pools and locker rooms. The waiver form is available for pickup at the administrative office, the activities office and the fitness center. Return your signed waiver to the administrative office or place it in the white WG drop-off box by the flagpole in front of the administrative office.

Windsor Writers My First Rollercoaster Ride by Marilynn Reeves When I was a little kid, my favorite thing in the whole wide world (not counting Christmas Day) was going to Elitch Gardens, at its previous location in northwest Denver.

It wasn’t just a fun place to go, but the original Elitch’s was rightly named for its beautiful gardens. The many winding walking paths took you through a maze of lovely flower beds featuring every kind of flower you can imagine. If memory serves, the one at the entryway even featured a sundial. Then, as you walked through the gardens, you eventually passed by the famous Trocadero Ballroom, which, back in its heyday, featured such iconic musicians as Glen Miller, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey. It drew huge crowds of people dressed in their evening finery who came there to dance the night away.

You were also treated to a variety of small food stands – hot dogs and pretzels and my favorite – that lovely puffy pink cloud of sweetness known as cotton candy.

But, of course, the best things of all were those thrilling rides. After an obligatory go-round on one of the beautiful painted horses going up and down on the merry-go-round, calliope music playing in the background, the next stop was the Ferris wheel. It took you up so high you could see the entire neighborhood spread out below you. But I think my favorite ride was one I called the ‘sail

planes’ with a sail you could manipulate yourself to go in and out as you went round and round the treetops.

One thing I never ventured on was that scary monstrosity called the Wildcat, however. I could hear the people screaming as they came swooping down the track and vowed I’d never get on that thing. At least not until I was 11 or 12 years old. By then, I was a bit older, braver and more adventurous, so I asked my dad if he would ride it with me.

The first few minutes as the coaster began its ascent up to the top of the track, I wondered what everyone was screaming about. It was just a slow, easy ride, until …. OMG! … until … the darn thing started heading down and the bottom dropped out of everything!

Down, down, down it went, at what seemed like a hundred miles an hour! I clung to my dad with all my might, and I started screaming, too!

The entire ride probably took less than ten minutes, but it was one of the most exhilarating – and terrifying – events of my entire life.

I was just so happy to have arrived back safe and sound, as it finally came to a stop when it reached solid ground. It was the first, last, and only time I ever got on one of those darn things. No more rollercoaster rides for me! But I do miss going to that old, original Elitch Gardens. It was my favorite place in the whole wide world.

The First Time, Again by Dennis Payton Knight I attended my first meeting of the Windsor Gardens Writers Group on Monday, January 17, 2011. Walking in, I considered myself to have already joined, whether they would take me or not, because I had taken a partial retirement from my job in a law firm just to have Monday mornings available to join the group.

That day I learned how each week’s writing topics are picked by the members in turn, alphabetically. The writing challenge given on that, and ironically, my very first day, was “The First Time,” and I had fun with it. As my opening hook, I told of the first time I ever tasted Wasabi, that my sinuses were assaulted, my eyes bulged, my necktie curled, and it was a perfectly joyful moment. I recalled other first times, some happy, others not, including breaking my tailbone in my first attempt at riding a bicycle.

I presented my writing to the group the following Monday, reading the words, “And so I stand here today, with all eyes at the table on me, a bashful new member, sweat on my brow, cotton in my mouth, this sinister object called a microphone in my hand, reading my story to the Windsor Gardens Writing Group, for the very first time.”

in our commitment to writing, including during the early covid epidemic. In 16 of those 805 weeks, rather than writing, we used the time to prepare and present our annual public reading event we now call “Windsor Writers Out Loud.” The net, by my count, is 789 topics, with some repeats scattered in but always treated as a fresh, new challenge. Never again since that first day in my Windsor Writers career, and until today, has our topic been “The First Time.”

I waxed a little poetic on the newness of things back in 2011, noting that first-time events are a frequent part of youth, but become more precious in our senior years. “The younger you are, the quicker come the firsts,” I wrote, “…but life continues to come to us in brand new ways as we reach our golden years, and the world is replete with wonderful things to be chased, tasted and tripped over.”

Now at the age of 82, 805 weeks since I wrote those words, how right I was. In August, as school resumes, I will be back in my latest role as a foster grandparent in a fourth grade classroom at Place Bridge Academy, where I experience daily, right along with the children, a rollout of new things learned by intention and sometimes tripped over, and at every day’s end I can record in my journal again, yet another first time.

That was 15½ years, 805 weeks ago, and as a group we have never paused The Windsor Writers group meets weekly on Mondays at 9 a.m. in the Aspen Room.
