Community Hub Activities

Our activities are suggested by people attending the hub and we always try to reflect what the community wants and needs. Often parents coming to the hub will run these workshops themselves, as part of the hub’s goal is to empower community members to use their skills to empower others. Here are some examples of what we’ve been up to in our first year!

1- Swimming in Handsworth Wellbeing Centre.

During the summer, we organised swimming classes for those interested as well as helping individuals to sign up to the gain a free gym membership.

Activities such as jewellery-making, crafting, patchwork, and mural design have been a hit among parents. They enjoy participating and have developed new skills through these workshops. Many have discovered hidden talents, created impressive pieces and made thoughtful gifts for friends and family members.

2- Craft with Katerina.

7- Summer Club

During the summer holidays, we hosted a one-week School Club oHering a variety of fun activities for children. The program engaged 100 kids, providing them an enjoyable and enriching experience. The children participated in fun and social activities that fostered learning and confidence-building throughout the week. It also allowed them to meet new peers and improve their communication skills while having a memorable and enjoyable time. Many of the parents who come to the hub worked as volunteers and their children – many who attend Olympus Academy – worked as young leaders throughout the week!

8- DIY skills

Empowering women, one tool at a time!

This workshop run by Shelter, taught the ladies how to use a drill, building their confidence and independence in tackling DIY projects. One lucky parent even won a drill to take home with them!

9- Trip to Barry Island.

Summer vibes at Barry Island! Families and ladies enjoyed a perfect day with sunny weather, fun activities, and a picnic feast brought from home. The kids played games, and some even took a refreshing swim at the beach. A truly memorable day for everyone!

10- Trip to Ikea

We had a lovely trip to Ikea to shop for the ladies. We enjoyed an excellent warm breakfast, had a great day, and picked up a lot of home essentials.

11- Trip to Wyre Forest

We had lots of fun getting out of the city and exploring Wyre Forest. We juiced fresh apples and had a walk around the forest.

The ladies had a delightful time learning how to make pizza, enjoying the experience of preparing and creating something tasty together with local mum Paramjit’s portable pizza oven! She taught us her tricks of the trade from her time living in Italy.

19- Leather Bag making with Icleve.

A local leather artist Icleve led us in this amazing creative activity, learning how to design and sew together leather bags, discovering new skills and having fun in the process.

Every Thursday the ladies come together to cook a feast with food from the local food pantry and using only a microwave, Air Fryer, Slow Cooker and Toastie Grill!
