ll the discussion surrounding the current energy crisis, and its impact on domestic fuel bills, is centred on the mass adoption of heat pumps. Yet among many homeowners there is a quiet backlash, focused on cost, effectiveness and the disruption involved in adapting the internal fabric of a property, including radiators. It is also important to recognise that these systems work best in wellinsulated homes.

Most home energy experts agree that insulation is the single most important upgrade for UK housing. Britain has some of the least energy-efficient and draughtiest homes in Europe, with large amounts of heat lost through windows, doors, roofs and walls. To understand why our housing stock performs so poorly, it is worth looking at colder Scandinavian countries and those in central Europe. A common denominator is the prevalence of better insulation, including the widespread use of triple glazing. Their approach is based on reducing overall heating demand by ensuring that less heat escapes from buildings.

Double glazing, triple glazing, loft insulation and wall insulation are all widely recognised as effective ways to reduce energy use dramatically. Yet they receive far less political and public attention than energy-generation technologies such as heat pumps and solar panels.

The result is policy that can appear overly focused on producing energy differently, rather than reducing the amount of energy households need in the first place.

This emphasis has been reinforced by powerful interests within the energy sector, which have an obvious stake in protecting future supply lines.

The bigger question is what the fenestration industry can do in response. It is vital to support trade associations such as the Glass and Glazing Federation, which have established routes into government and policy-making.

They face a difficult task when competing for attention with larger energy-related trade bodies. However, the fenestration sector has a significant advantage: unlike heat pumps or solar panels, windows and doors appeal to homeowners on several fronts at once. They improve energy efficiency, security and aesthetics.

I recently spent time with a retail expert who specialises in home improvements. His view was that success depends on having the right products, the right messaging and

One of the most overlooked issues is lead response time. In fenestration, the average response time is said to be 47 hours. That needs to fall dramatically.

His recommendation was that all web enquiries should be answered within an hour, ideally by phone. Retailers should also consider adding a WhatsApp Business button to their websites and Google Business Profiles, particularly to appeal to younger customers. This can be supported by automated SMS follow-ups immediately after a form submission, either to confirm receipt or to encourage survey bookings.

Technology is now central to retail sales. Digital visualisation software is increasingly expected by customers, alongside quick and professional digital communication. Yet traditional incentives should not be underestimated. Referral schemes remain powerful: why should satisfied customers not become an additional sales force? Offering £150 in cash for successful referrals can still be highly effective.

With consumer budgets under pressure, it is also important to promote 0 per cent or low-deposit finance prominently.

These options should not be buried in the small print, but featured clearly in advertising and at the first point of contact. Research suggests that many homeowners are already well into the buying process before making an enquiry, which means finance options need to be visible well before the in-home appointment.

Recent data from Barbour ABI supports the growth potential of the fenestration sector, forecasting expansion of 16 per cent by 2029. The key drivers include rising retrofit demand, tighter energy-efficiency regulations, a greater focus on security and growing interest in smart locking systems. The challenge is to push the products already available to the front of homeowners’ minds. That responsibility falls largely on the industry itself, because it should expect little assistance from a government agenda still heavily preoccupied with heat pumps.

UK door and window industry is forecast to grow 16% by 2029

T

he UK doors and windows industry is forecast to grow by nearly 16% (15.83%) by 2029, according to a full market analysis by Barbour ABI. The construction data specialists estimate the sector will be worth £638m at manufacturers’ selling prices in 2025.

All market sectors are expected to see modest annual growth of around 2% in 2026 as recovery begins. From 2027 onwards, growth is set to accelerate, driven by efforts to meet housing targets and a surge in retrofit activity linked to tightening energy efficiency regulations.

Security and smart technology are key growth drivers for the sector. Rising demand for higher security standards, alongside increasing interest in smart access and electronic locking systems, is expected to support product innovation and boost market value in the years ahead.

Barbour ABI Head of Business and Client Analytics, Ed Griffiths, said: “The UK door and window fittings market continues to evolve, with security requirements, regulation and technology playing an increasingly important role in product specification. While the market

remains highly competitive and reliant on international supply chains, there is clear momentum in higher-value segments, particularly in security and electronic access solutions.

Door hardware remains the dominant part of the sector, reflecting the complexity of modern systems and the importance of security in both residential and commercial buildings. At the same time, technological innovation and changing building standards are creating new opportunities for suppliers able to deliver higher-specification, integrated solutions.”

Barbour ABI found that locks represent

the largest product category, accounting for around 45% of total market value. This is driven by the complexity and cost of modern locking systems, including multi-point locks and emerging smart security products.

A notable trade deficit The sector remains highly dependent on imported products, with import values significantly exceeding exports. This imbalance highlights the UK’s reliance on overseas suppliers to meet demand, with many UK “manufacturers” operating production facilities abroad.

In 2024, EU imports totalled £137.9m, while non-EU imports reached £189m. This compares with exports of £56.6m to the EU and £35.3m to non-EU markets.

Swedish group Assa Abloy is the largest player in the industry, owning well-known brands including Yale and Union, and maintaining a strong presence in the UK alongside its position as a global leader in access control systems. In 2022, Assa Abloy acquired Arran Isle (including Mila and Carlisle Brass), as well as Caldwell UK, which was integrated into the Yale brand in 2023—further strengthening its UK market position.

Leadership changes at Rehau Windows UK to set the course for 2030

O

n the heels of yet another strong year of growth, Rehau Windows UK has announced a series of structural changes to its senior management team in line with its ambitious Vision and Strategy 2030, taking effect from June 2026. Most notably, after 38 years’ service, Martin Hitchin has decided to retire from his role of CEO Rehau and Executive Vice President Window Solutions Northern Europe. Martin will continue as chairman of the Rehau board and will also act as a senior advisor focusing on development of the company’s commercial windows strategy, strategic partner relationships and continued leadership of trade associations British Plastics Federation (BPF) and Recovinyl.

Taking the helm in Rehau’s Windows Solution sub-group will be Russell Hand who joined Rehau in 1999 and as of 1st June 2026 will become Executive Vice President Windows Solutions Northern Europe, and a member of the Rehau board. Russell will help grow the UK business while strengthening relationships with regional partners and reinforcing Rehau Window Solutions as a long term partner to the trade.

Barry Gilligan will take on the expanded role of National Sales Director Window Solutions UK & Ireland, and will join the Rehau board, leading the sales organisation

with a clear focus on customer success and sustainable growth.

Finally, Matthew Baker, Finance Director, who joined Rehau in 2008, will take up the additional role of UK Country Manager.

As a long-standing member of the Rehau board, Matthew will have responsibility for compliance and legal matters as well as ensuring strong governance across all Rehau’s UK sub-groups as the business continues to grow.

Rehau says these appointments reflect the collective confidence in the experience,

leadership and commitment of this team. Martin comments: “Throughout my time at Rehau, the business has been built on stability, long term thinking, and doing the right thing for our customers and our people. I am extremely proud of the leadership team around me, whose experience and commitment have been central to our success. High-rise pipeline supports recovery in UK commercial glazing market

T

he UK’s commercial glazing market has returned to growth after two years of decline with a boost from high-rise development.

A new report from Barbour ABI shows that the growing high-rise pipeline is set to support demand for façade contractors, curtain wall specialists, glazing suppliers and specifiers.

Barbour ABI’s latest Commercial Glazing market report values the UK market at an estimated £2.168bn in 2025, a 1% annual growth. This follows two consecutive years of decline driven by weak economic conditions, higher construction costs and delays to major schemes.

Regional high-rise projects have quadrupled in five years to 911 schemes, valued at £51bn, close to a ten-fold increase on 2021 levels, Barbour research reveals.

“After two difficult years, the commercial glazing market is showing early signs of recovery and the high-rise pipeline offers the sector an exciting opportunity,” said Ed Griffiths, head of business and client analytics at Barbour ABI.

While London continues to account for around half of the UK’s tallest buildings over 50 metres, Barbour’s data shows the market is becoming increasingly regional. Outside the capital, projects are now spread across 45 cities and large towns.

Manchester, Salford, Liverpool and Birmingham together account for 121 projects, but most of the remaining pipeline is spread across other locations such as Leeds, Glasgow, Bristol and Cardiff.

“London is no longer the whole story” explained Griffiths. “The pipeline shows regional cities are scaling up fast, with tallbuilding activity spread across the country.

If delayed schemes start to move through approvals and into construction as expected, the glazing and façade supply chain should see an uplift in demand.”

High-rise residential and mixed-use schemes typically create demand for commercial windows, curtain walling, structural glazing, entrance systems and high-performance façade packages.

Looking further ahead, Barbour ABI forecasts the UK commercial glazing market will continue to expand steadily through the end of the decade, reaching £2.459bn by 2030.

The report analysed key market drivers such as non-residential construction activity, RMI demand, economic conditions and regulatory changes, alongside developments in energy-efficient glazing, façade design and product innovation.

It also reviewed major suppliers, competitive dynamics and distribution channels, together with UK production trends and supply chain structure, providing a strategic overview of this complex and evolving market.

Timberlook backs growing demand with delivery fleet expansion

imberlook, a heritage-style PVC-U window and door brand from Affordable Windows Group, has announced a significant expansion of its delivery fleet - a direct response to the growing demand for its range of heritage-inspired products from installers across the UK. The most recent investment has seen eight new vehicles and 16 demountable boxes added to the fleet, bringing the total number of vehicles purchased in 2025 and 2026 combined to 32. AWG’s fleet now stands at 64 vehicles in total, supported by a transport department of 50 team members – including drivers and office staff – who together ensure that orders reach installers reliably and on time.

The scale of the operation is considera-

AluFold Windows adds PVC-U to help installers retain greater control

S

upply-only fabricator AluFold Windows has introduced PVC-U alongside its core aluminium offer, expanding its model to give customers more control as pricing and delivery pressures continue to build.

The move reflects the market shift, where both residential and commercial projects are led as much by cost and availability as they are by preference and design. By bringing aluminium and PVC-U into a single supply model, AluFold is mitigating the added time, stress and logistics installers face when forced to work with multiple suppliers as projects take shape.

Backed by Leicester-based Unique Window Systems and its close partnership with Eurocell, AluFold’s introduction of PVC-U extends the same structured, supply-only approach already in place for aluminium.

A complete PVC-U production facility has been built within AluFold Windows’ 70,000 ft² factory at Whitebirk Industrial Estate in Blackburn, featuring advanced machinery including a BDM cutting and machining centre capable of processing up to 800 windows per week.

The new line is further supported by multiple quad welders, CNC corner cleaners and CNC beading equipment to ensure consistent quality throughout production, with AluFold’s expert operating team now fully trained to work across both uPVC and aluminium.

“Aluminium will always be at the core of AluFold Windows,” says Managing Director, Neal Addison. “This isn’t about changing

what we do. It is about recognising how our customers are working day-to-day and making sure we’re set up to support that properly.”

Karl Williams, who has led the integration of PVC-U into AluFold since he joined the business in February, brings 20 years of hands-on experience across production, operations and quality control, having worked in multiple large-scale fabrication environments across the North West.

“I’ve had the opportunity to build PVC-U into AluFold from the outset – the setup, the backing and the way the business is structured,” explains Karl. “It’s that solid base that gives our customers the confidence to price, plan and move projects forward without second guessing supply, which is the biggest support we can give them in today’s market.”

ollowing a showstopping debut, Affordable Windows Group is returning to the FIT Show in 2027 to showcase its latest heritage innovations.

After the success of their 2025 appearance, which featured an attention-grabbing gold French door from AWG’s aluminium Decorio range, the heritage experts will once again be heading to the NEC in Birmingham from 18 – 20 May 2027.

While AWG’s steel-look Decorio range was the star at last year’s exhibition, for 2027 the latest flush sash technology and Timberweld joins made famous by Timberlook – the heritage wood-effect uPVC brand of Affordable Windows Group – will take prime position on the stand.

Long-standing Veka partner, Potton Windows, achieves PAS 2030 status

eka plc partner, Potton Windows, has achieved PAS 2030 accreditation, strengthening its capability to support clients delivering energy efficiency improvements across social housing.

Established in 1987, the family run business has long specialised in local authority and housing association work, with around 95% of projects focused on the social housing sector, under the leadership of Managing Director Peter Ray. As retrofit programmes continue to grow in response to funding initiatives such as ECO4, Potton Windows took the decision to gain a deeper understanding of the standards shaping project delivery.

PAS 2030 provides a framework for the quality assured installation of energy efficiency measures, supporting a whole house approach to retrofit. Typically coordinated by principal contractors and retrofit specialists, these projects bring together multiple trades to improve the thermal performance of existing housing stock.

Achieving PAS 2030 has helped us better understand how these projects are

The accreditation process largely involved evidencing existing technical procedures, quality management processes and installation standards already embedded within the business.

Veka’s partnership with Potton Windows began in 1991. Through long term collaboration and support from Veka, Potton has been able to access the performance data and supporting documentation required as part of the compliance process.

Simon added; “Veka provided the technical information we needed, including thermal performance data and U-values, which supported the submission process.

Having access to clear and reliable documentation made it much easier to compile the required evidence.”

With more than three decades of

026 marks a major milestone for LSF Commercial as the commercial aluminium systems specialist celebrates 30 years at its headquarters and manufacturing facility in Rainham, Essex.

From modest beginnings producing shopfronts, the family-run business has evolved into a leading fabricator of high-performance aluminium windows, doors, curtain walling and shopfronts for commercial projects nationwide. Over the past three decades, the company has continually invested in its people, premises and processes, transforming both its footprint and production capabilities.

Forterro supports Glazerite server refresh boosting speed and efficiency

F

orterro has supported Glazerite in completing a major eight month upgrade to its servers and dataset, which is already delivering what Paul Jagger, Glazerite’s Head of Group IT, describes as “significant performance benefits for customers and colleagues.”

Forterro has been Glazerite’s software partner since the company was founded in 2000. Over the past 26 years, Forterro has helped the Wellingborough-based trade fabricator leverage maximum efficiencies and customer service enhancements from its suite of products. This includes Evolution and Satellite pricing, ordering and manufacturing software, EvoNet order tracking and stock control system and the Courier electronic proof of delivery tool.

The latest project enabled Glazerite’s planned switch to a new server as part of ongoing investments to ensure the scalability, security and cost-efficiency of its IT systems. Forterro’s software development division in Scotland worked closely with Paul Jagger and his team to scope and plan the programme, which involved a complete dataset rebuild.

Impressively, that rebuild was completed ahead of schedule, ensuring that Glazerite could switch their order processing function

onto the server a month early and ensure it was fully populated before going live.

The dataset rebuild project, led by Glazerite’s Senior Software Product Developer, Andy Thompson, has allowed Glazerite to remove all redundant profiles and hardware from its system as well as consolidating its machining set up. This has, in turn delivered a faster, sleeker and easier to maintain system.

Forterro completed the detailed work required for Glazerite to change away from a 25-year-old dataset. This included implementing changes to Glazerite’s Batch Release Module, updating factory machine drivers, modifying the GlazeBot automated tasks and reporting tool, supporting changes to Courier, and creating a new set up for the

EvoSatellite system.

Crucially, EvoNet, used for order management and tracking, item barcode tracking with scanpoint info screens and stock control – was recreated and amended jointly by Glazerite and Forterro. This allowed the system to work dynamically with orders from both servers, eliminating the risk of errors, bottlenecks and duplication.

Paul Jagger said: “Our advanced IT setup has always been a key differentiator, and this project maintains that advantage. There is always risk in migrating to a new server, but working with Forterro meant it was almost entirely mitigated. Their support was crucial to the project’s success.

“The feedback I’ve received from both within Glazerite and from customers using our EvoSatellite ordering system is that the transition has been seamless, with significant performance improvements.

“The support from the Forterro team was key to the success of this project. This was a complex change with many moving parts, yet Glazerite’s operations didn’t miss a beat during the implementation phase of the switchover.” www.businessmicros.co.uk

eading solar shading specialist Caribbean has successfully hosted a Business Growth Day at its Suffolk headquarters, bringing together more than 60 delegates for a full day of insight, training and collaboration.

The event, designed to help staff from 40 installation businesses strengthen their offering and capitalise on growing demand for external shading, combined practical workshops, one-to-one support and access to Caribbean’s manufacturing processes.

A central feature was a programme of six group workshops focused on two key areas shaping the sector: the science of solar shading and the role of automation in increasing project value and improving sales outcomes.

Precision restoration to OEM standard

T

he engineers at Emmegi (UK) welcome a challenge, but the refurbishment of this Phantomatic T3 Star 4-axis CNC was arguably their biggest challenge yet.

When the machine arrived from a customer in Ireland to be refurbed for the second-hand machinery market, it had been so heavily utilised that it required a comprehensive, ground-up overhaul. But over the course of two and half months, the Emmegi (UK) engineering team in Coventry stripped it down to the framework and repaired, refurbished or replaced virtually every element.

The finished result – which is almost indistinguishable from a new machine - showcases not just the quality of the team’s training and expertise, but also the benefits of using OEM spare parts and software.

Wayne Hunter, Emmegi (UK)’s Operations Manager, explained the steps of the project: “We regularly refurbish machines we take back from existing customers to extend their lives in the second-hand market, and it usually takes

just a few weeks. But this refurbishment was on another level, and it took more than two months of thorough and painstaking work to get it ready for sale.

“The first, and longest stage was to clean and degrease the machine. We removed all the covers and clamp beds to access parts the customer will probably never even see, but which we knew were important.

“All of the bearing rails were cleaned, and the racks regreased. The tool magazine was removed and cleaned, and the tool holders themselves were replaced. Every energy chain on the machine was cleaned and repaired, all the bearings were greased, and all the air filters were replaced.

The electrical panels were cleaned as well, and various exterior panels were cleaned and repainted before the machine was reassembled.

“Before it was signed off, it was greased and lubricated, fully tested and calibrated and given a clean bill of health.”

The transformed Phantomatic T3 Star, complete with rotating work table, has now been shipped to its new home at Vitrine Aluminium in St Helens.

Paul Fradley, Vitrine’s Managing Director, said: “As we transition our operations to our new 5,326 sq ft facility in Haydock, capital efficiency and sustainable growth are at the forefront of our strategy.

Partnering with Emmegi (UK) to acquire a fully OEM-refurbished Phantomatic T3 Star was a highly calculated decision. From a marketing perspective, that means you still need strong fundamentals – a good website, solid SEO and positive reviews – but you also need content that positions your business within those AIdriven results.

A big part of that is LeadTracker, our marketing automation platform. It helps businesses capture, manage and convert enquiries more effectively, linking marketing directly to sales activity and improving follow-up.

hen I joined Purplex in 2009, the industry was in the middle of a recession. Across the glazing sector, businesses were doing what they do when times get tough – cutting spend, battening down the hatches and trying to ride it out.

What stood out to me quite quickly was that Purplex was doing the exact opposite.

Within about 12 months we went from five staff to around 30 and moved into a much bigger office. More importantly, our clients were growing too. We were working with fabricators, a PVC-U systems company and a composite door specialist, and they were all bucking the trend.

At the time, it felt counterintuitive. If the market is shrinking, how can anyone grow? But then my MD, business growth expert Andrew Scott, outlined what was happening.

A bigger slice of the pie While the overall pie was shrinking, he explained, a bigger slice of that pie was still there to be won. If other businesses are pulling back, the companies that stay visible, keep selling and keep marketing are in a much stronger position to take that share.

It sounds obvious now, but for an inexperienced university graduate it was a real penny-drop moment. I realised that a downturn isn’t all doom and gloom – it can present a genuine opportunity.

Almost two decades later, I can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu.

The market is tough, arguably tougher than 2009. Costs are up, price pressure is intense and customers are taking longer to make decisions. But the potential to grow is still there.

One of our clients, a retail installation business, has grown from £7m to £10m in the last year through a clear and consistent sales and marketing strategy. This isn’t a fluke. They knew what they wanted to achieve, had a plan to get there, and kept executing while competitors around them lost their nerve.

That is the thinking behind Purplex.

The name itself comes from Purpose, Plan, Execute: understand the objective, build the plan, and keep pushing it forward. It sounds straightforward, but in reality most businesses fall down because one of those elements is missing.

Changing face of marketing Marketing has always been a fastmoving industry. In the 2000s the toolkit consisted of PR, direct mail, campaigns, print and a lot of face-to-face relationship building.

In 2010 we launched email marketing

– which felt cutting edge at the time – and over the years we’ve continued to evolve, adding digital, social media, video and new technologies.

The most significant shift in recent years has been AI. It’s changed how people search, how they consume information and how they make decisions.

Needing strong fundamentals People are now asking tools like ChatGPT questions such as “who’s the best window company in Bristol?” and getting summarised answers based on websites, review platforms and third-party sources, effectively shortcutting the traditional

Video is a good example of that shift.

When did you join or set up current company: I joined Purplex in 2009, when it was still a young business, and have been part of its growth journey ever since.

Favourite restaurant for business: We often take clients to Michelangelo’s on Weston seafront. It’s always busy, even midweek in winter, which is a good sign.

Business person you admire: It has to be Andrew Scott. I’ve worked with him for almost 20 years and watched him build a diverse portfolio of businesses while advising hundreds of others. He’s relentless - a business machine!

What lesson have you learnt about business over the last 12 months: The power of very small marginal gains across multiple areas - they compound over time and can have huge impact.

Best business decision: After dabbling in other markets, we took the decision to focus purely on the glazing, building products and home improvement sectors. On the face of it, this sounds restrictive, but it has allowed us to really double down and master our craft.

Other interests: Playing guitar – I get together with mates once a week for a jam – fitness, football, poker and chess. I enjoy the tactical side and play a few quick online games most days.

WORKING DAY With two young kids I’m often awake far earlier than I’d like, and the day usually starts helping them get ready. From there I’m either heading into the office, about 10 minutes away, or out on the road visiting a client.

If I’m in the office, I’ll spend the first half hour clearing emails before getting stuck into meetings or projects. That could be a client call, working with the sales team on new business, reviewing strategy with account managers, planning campaigns with the marketing team, or sitting down with MD Andrew Scott.

I’ve always got a few big pieces of work on the go, such as proposals or campaigns, so I dip in and out as the day unfolds. Evenings typically end in my home gym with football on TV and music on loud. It’s when the best ideas happen!

We’ve seen strong results from this approach, with one installer generating around 800 leads per month from a single case study video campaign on Facebook.

The personal touch Alongside that, we’re putting more emphasis on personal branding. People buy from people, and if you can show the human side of your business, it builds

trust quickly.

Despite all the change in channels and technology, one thing hasn’t really shifted – Purplex has always been a very face-toface business. I remember my first few weeks out on the road visiting clients and seeing their factories and showrooms, and that hasn’t really changed.

Covid shifted working habits slightly, but we still spend a lot of time with clients in person. There is still no substitute for sitting across the table and having a proper conversation.

More recently, my role has expanded to focus on strategic partnerships across the industry. That means working with suppliers, trade bodies and organisations that want to support their customers with marketing and lead generation but don’t have the infrastructure to do it themselves.

Driving demand We’re seeing more demand for that approach. If you can help businesses grow further down the supply chain, it naturally drives demand back up through it.

Looking ahead, I don’t think the next 12 months will be easy. But difficult markets create opportunity. The businesses that stay proactive, keep improving and keep taking action are the ones that tend to come out stronger.

From a Purplex point of view, we’ve got big growth ambitions. When I joined, we were a five-person business with a

handful of clients. Today we’re a team of around 100, working with over 150 clients.

Around 80% of that is in glazing, with the rest across building products and wider construction.

We see a lot of opportunity to grow further in building products, particularly in areas like renewables, but there is still a huge amount of potential in the glazing sector. It’s our core market, and one we know inside out.

For me personally, it’s about continuing to build on that. Helping clients grow, developing stronger partnerships across the industry, and playing a part in the next phase of growth for the business.

eceuninck has launched a new CPD for architects and specifiers to explain the practical impact of the Future Homes Standard on window and door specification.

While the headline u-value requirement for new build windows remains unchanged at 1.2W/m²K, the methodology used to assess compliance has shifted significantly. Instead of relying on a standard model window, performance is now assessed against the exact size and configuration of each individual window supplied.

That means achieving compliance becomes more challenging, particularly on smaller windows and more complex designs where frame proportion, glazing area and components such as mullions, transoms, cills and vents can have a greater impact on thermal performance.

Peter Dyer, Head of Commercial, Deceuninck, said: “A lot of people will look at the Future Homes Standard and assume that because the u-value target hasn’t changed, nothing much has changed. That’s not the case. What’s changed is the calculation. The move away from a standard reference window to the assessment of each individual window means architects and specifiers need to think much more carefully about the products they put into a scheme, and how those products perform in realworld applications.”

He continued: “Under the new approach, windows and doors have to work harder within the overall energy model of the building. A specification that looked straightforward under the old methodology can become much more difficult to justify when every individual window is assessed on its actual configuration. That’s why early design input matters. The right system choice can help protect thermal performance without creating unnecessary cost or forcing over-specification.”

Dave Mechem appointed as FENSA and RISA MD

T

he Glass and Glazing Group has appointed Dave Mechem to the newly created role of Managing Director of FENSA and RISA in a move designed to transform service and strengthen support for installers and homeowners.

Dave steps into the role after more than two decades working in the window and door sector, in a career which has encompassed everything from window and door manufacture and installation, to senior leadership roles in inspection, compliance and dispute resolution.

He said: “For the last 20 plus years I’ve been in and out of thousands of properties, talking to installers and homeowners, and working in the detail of standards, regulations and certification. That mix of practical and compliance experience is exactly what I want to bring to FENSA and RISA in this new

role. If you’re running a window company, your first priority is keeping customers happy and keeping the vans moving. Regulation has to be there - it protects consumers and it protects the industry - but it shouldn’t feel like an extra burden.

“My job is to make FENSA work for installers in the background, making compliance as smooth, fast and painless as possible, and being there when installers need help.”

Going forward, his focus will be to reshape FENSA,removing unnecessary touchpoints and complexity, while making it easier and simpler to join. “We want to be able to give installers a single, competent point of contact who can actually sort things out,” he adds. “We want to open up better support for installers, better experiences for homeowners and more opportunities from inspections and expert witness work through to insurance, membership and technical services.”

T

he confirmation that the Future Homes Standard (FHS) will come into force in March 2027 provides welcome clarity for the housebuilding sector. After several years of consultation and industry engagement, the direction of travel is now firmly established, allowing the focus to move from expectation to practical preparation.

In many respects, the headline performance targets for dwellings remain consistent with earlier proposals. Notional U values for windows will remain at 1.2 W/m²K, with doors typically at 1.0–1.2 W/ m²K depending on construction type. This reflects the progress already made across the fenestration sector and will feel familiar to many designers, fabricators and installers.

However, the most significant change introduced by the Future Homes Standard is not the targets themselves, but how performance is calculated and evidenced in practice.

Moving closer to real world performance Under the new approach, U values for windows and doors in new dwellings must be based on the actual size and configuration of the products installed, rather than standard reference dimensions.

This includes non structural elements such as frame sections, sills, add ons or frame extensions, couplers and decorative glazing bars, all of which can influence overall thermal performance.

Performance will now be assessed using average area weighted calculations, meaning the longstanding ‘standard window’ approach will no longer be acceptable for new dwellings. This shift is intended to ensure that calculated values more accurately reflect what is installed on site and how products contribute to the building’s overall energy performance.

For specifiers, fabricators and installers, understanding how configuration choices affect calculated performance will be a key part of preparing for implementation.

Clarity across the supply chain A similar direction is also emerging in Wales. The Welsh Government has confirmed changes to Part L of Welsh Building Regulations, due to come into force from March 2027, with a greater emphasis on real world building performance and updated calculation methodologies for new homes. This growing alignment across the UK reinforces the importance of consistent, evidence based approaches to demonstrating product performance throughout the supply chain.

As with any regulatory change, clear interpretation will be essential. Terminology and component descriptions can vary across the supply chain, creating the potential for inconsistent application if not properly aligned.

The intent of the Future Homes Standard is not to introduce unnecessary complexity, but to improve transparency and consistency. Many of the technical capabilities required to support this more detailed approach already exist within the industry.

Supporting compliance through robust data While the Future Homes Standard does not dramatically alter thermal thresholds, it does increase the importance of reliable technical data and calculation tools.

ACTIVE VOICES Russell Yates, Managing Director, AluK: Working with a UK based systems company massively simplifies supply chain management and gives fabricators one fully-accountable point of contact

A

luminium fabricators are already faced with a bewildering array of imported systems – and now we have news of a major systems company moving production out of the UK and switching UK customers to products imported from Europe.

That makes AluK one of a vanishing number of UK-based systems companies which relies entirely on UK extrusion and has its own production, paint, stock and service all in one place. And I can reassure all our customers that we have no intention of changing that.

In the commercial sector, multisourcing makes perfect economic sense in terms of securing the project based on the system specified. But I would argue that it makes less and less sense in the trade sector.

Simplify your supply chain I appreciate that the market is challenging and that the promise of cheaper product from lower cost overseas environments can be tempting, but the best way to stay competitive when you’re under price pressure is to simplify your supply chain – not to complicate it.

Ironically, since Brexit, we’ve seen imports of aluminium product into the UK rising steadily, with some trade fabricators now buying from two, three or even four different suppliers.

Not only does that leave them vulnerable to the kinds of supply chain shocks we’ve all witnessed in recent years – from Covid to global conflicts – it also adds layers of unnecessary and expensive complexity to their businesses.

Some would argue that it’s a buyers’ market, with fabricators under the same dual or triple sourcing pressure from their installers as they are putting on systems companies.

Takes time and resource But, for any type or size of fabrication business, managing more than one systems company takes time and resource.

Coordinating multiple suppliers with different lead times, shipping methods, customs procedures and minimum order quantities is a self-inflicted headache.

Trade and retail fabricators buying from overseas are not just at the mercy of late deliveries and slow response times, but any problems caused by quality and service issues are multiplied when the product is being manufactured hundreds or even thousands of miles away.

I can appreciate the cost pressures that

UK fabricators face, but the solution to those pressures isn’t to add further cost by over complicating their businesses. I would argue that there are much more significant cost savings to be made by embracing new technology, managing their cost base, tightening controls and protecting cash flow rather than multisourcing, especially from overseas.

THE BIG INTERVIEW John Cowie sits down with Sam Weber, the new Sales Director at the Chigwell Window Group, to discuss how his industry experience will support and benefit Chigwell and its customers

F

or Sam Weber, Sales Director at Chigwell Window Group, a career in the window industry was shaped early and decisively.

His first experience came in the late 1980s, working alongside his father, who was already established in the sector. From the outset, Weber’s exposure spanned both the technical and commercial sides of the business, an alignment that would later define his approach.

He began on the manufacturing floor, spending four years producing PVC-U and aluminium windows as well as conservatory roofs. This grounding provided more than technical competence; it offered credibility in an industry where product knowledge remains a key differentiator. Yet it was his transition into trade sales at the Omega Group that marked a more decisive shift.

There, under the guidance of Andrew Scott, now associated with Insight Data and Perplex Marketing, Weber encountered the growing influence of marketing within what had historically been a product-driven sector. The introduction of the “British Security Window” concept demonstrated how positioning, rather than engineering alone, could shape market perception. It was an early lesson in differentiation, that competitive advantage could be constructed as much through narrative as through specification.

Product distinction and targeted messaging A move to the Epwin Group in the mid-1990s coincided with the launch of its Quantal roof system. Competing against established products such as Ultraframe’s Mark One roof, Weber again relied on a combination of product distinction and targeted messaging. The experience reinforced a consistent theme throughout his career, innovation required effective communication to translate into commercial success.

Over subsequent years, Weber held roles across several trade manufacturers, including a long-standing association with CWG and CWG Choices. These positions deepened his understanding of the industry’s customer base, particularly the diversity within retail operations. While outwardly similar, retail businesses often face highly specific challenges shaped by geography, local demand and operational pressures. Weber adapted his sales approach accordingly, favouring tailored strategies over standardised models.

A two-year project with Speedframe further broadened his perspective, particularly within the new-build sector. During this period, Weber undertook formal marketing training, gaining qualifications in both digital and traditional disciplines. This combination of practical experience and structured learning proved pivotal when he joined Evolution Windows.

At Evolution, Weber was involved in positioning a premium timber-alternative PVC-U window product during the aftermath of the subprime mortgage crisis. Despite entering a market constrained by economic uncertainty, and with a product priced significantly above competitors, the company achieved sustained growth, with sales rising by more than 30% in its first year. Heritage timber specialist Landmark Windows says accreditation strengthens trust, provenance and quality in Britain’s refurbishment market

A

London-based manufacturer of bespoke timber windows and doors has joined Made in Britain, using the trademark to underline its commitment to domestic production as demand for heritage and conservation joinery remains strong across the UK. Landmark Windows Co, a family-run business founded by Steve Hunt and now led by his sons Tom and Ben, manufactures timber sash windows, casement windows and hardwood doors from its in-house workshop in London. The company, which has more than 35 years of industry experience, supplies both trade and residential projects across London and the South East, with a focus on period and conservation properties.

Its accreditation comes against a backdrop of sustained demand in the heritage sector. Around 21% of homes in England were built before 1919, while a third of non-residential buildings are more than 100 years old, according to Historic England. That ageing building stock continues to support a significant market for refurbishment and specialist joinery.

Luton entrepreneur who built £2m business from discarded doors receives King’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development

King’s Award for Green Doors founder A Luton entrepreneur who built a £2 million business from doors found in a skip received one of the UK’s highest honours earlier this month in a ceremony that returned him to where it all began.

Joseph Holman, founder of Green Doors, was presented with the King’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development by the Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire Mrs Susan Lousada on Friday April 29th.

In a nod to the company’s origins, Holman accepted the King’s award while inside a skip.

“I started 11 years ago with a set of doors I found in a skip,” said Holman. “Now, I’ve received an award from the King.

“Being in a skip to receive this award felt like the most honest way to tell that story.”

Holman met King Charles III at Windsor Castle in June as part of the awards programme. He said: “Everyone knows the King is very passionate about the environment and so it was great to tell him about the work we’ve been doing.

“We spoke for several minutes. He seemed very relaxed and comfortable talking with everyone.

“The whole experience was quite surreal and being in Windsor Castle felt like a totally different world from our warehouse in Luton.”

Holman said he believed the award would help raise awareness about the environmental issues surrounding landfill and perfectly reusable doors.

“Putting PVC-U doors into landfill is a dreadful thing as they release horrible tox-

ins into the atmosphere as they degrade. We want to make sure every door and window gets a second life and we felt having this King’s Award would help us to do that.”

The King’s Award is given to businesses that have shown remarkable success in exporting, social impact, innovation or, as in Green Doors’ case, sustainable development.

“Entering the award was a difficult process. You have to put your business under the microscope and prove all you’ve done.

But once we gained the award and I met the King it felt great and it gave myself and the team a tremendous boost.”

Green Doors rescues discarded and mismeasured doors and windows and gives them a second life. Last year alone the company saved more than 3,000 items from landfill, selling them to builders, homeowners and renovators from its 25,000 sq ft warehouse in Bedfordshire.

The business now generated around £2 million in revenue and employed six staff, known internally as the “door doctors”.

Holman added: “Winning the King’s Award was huge for our business. We worked long and hard at our warehouse in Luton and this was a massive boost for all of us.

“But more importantly, it shone a light on a bigger issue. Perfectly reusable doors and windows were being thrown away every day. There’s a better way and we’ve proven it works.”

The King’s Award is among the highest honours a British business can receive.

To mark the occasion, Green Doors opened its warehouse to visitors for a special tour, showcasing what it described as an “adoorable” collection of reclaimed doors.

Items on display included high-security doors from the former US Embassy in London and historic pieces such as 14th century church doors.

Holman said: “We wanted to use this moment to call for change. This wasn’t just about us. It was about showing that reuse works and that waste doesn’t have to be waste.”

Fenestration firms face fight for market share

John Cowie tuned into Andrew Scott’s latest webinar to hear how UK glazing firms must act decisively as demand reshapes competition and growth

T

he UK’s fenestration sector is entering a period of intensified competition and structural decline, with firms urged to adopt more disciplined growth strategies or risk being left behind, according to industry expert Andrew Scott.

Speaking during a recent webinar, Scott, founder of Purplex Marketing and Insight Data, set out a stark assessment of current trading conditions, pointing to a shrinking market, rising insolvencies and mounting pressure across the construction supply chain.

“The reality is the market has contracted,” he said. “But there are fewer companies competing for it. That creates opportunity for those prepared to take action.”

Industry figures cited during the session indicate there are now approximately 15,600 businesses operating in the windows, doors and conservatories segment, a number that has declined steadily in recent years. The sector remains highly fragmented, with the majority of firms consisting of small, often self-employed installers.

In the past year alone, around 330 companies have entered insolvency, compared with fewer than 160 new formations. The net effect is a gradual consolidation of the market, a trend mirrored across wider construction, where falling planning approvals and reduced project starts are suppressing demand.

Passive strategies are no longer viable Against this backdrop, Scott argued that passive strategies are no longer viable. “The winners over the next few years will be those that take market share,” he said. “And that means taking it from someone else.”

Central to his argument is the need for greater strategic clarity.

He outlined a three-stage framework, purpose, plan and execute, designed to help businesses define long-term objectives and align resources accordingly. While many firms may have produced business plans in the past, Scott suggested these are often underused.

“Very few companies revisit their plans once they’ve written them,” he said. “You need to be clear on what your business looks like in three to five years, your revenue, your customers, your product mix, and then build a strategy around that.”

A key component of this strategy is understanding product and market positioning. Scott described four primary growth pathways: expanding existing products within current markets, introducing new products to existing customers, entering new markets with established offerings, and launching new products into new markets.

Maximising value from existing operations The emphasis, he noted, should initially be on maximising value from existing operations before pursuing higher-risk diversification.

“Most businesses haven’t fully exploited their current market,” he said. “That’s where the quickest gains are.”

Alongside strategic positioning, Scott highlighted the importance of what he termed the “business growth engine”, a focus on attracting leads, converting them into customers and retaining them over time. Weakness in any one of these areas, he argued, would constrain growth.

Retention, in particular, was identified as a critical but often overlooked factor. “It’s not just about delivering the product,” he said. “It’s about the experience. If you get both expectation and experience right, that’s where repeat business and referrals come from.”

Brand strength also featured prominently in the discussion. In

a market where many products are perceived as interchangeable, differentiation increasingly depends on reputation and recognition.

A strong brand, Scott suggested, amplifies performance across marketing, sales and customer retention, while also enhancing overall business value.

The webinar also underlined several broader shifts affecting the sector’s commercial environment. Advances in artificial intelligence are reshaping how customers search for suppliers, requiring businesses to adapt their digital visibility strategies beyond traditional search engines. At the same time, social media platforms are evolving into search tools in their own right.

However, Scott pointed to a parallel trend towards more traditional forms of engagement. “There’s a move back towards human interaction,” he said, citing renewed interest in direct mail, live events and other offline channels. “Customers still want to deal with people, not just transactions.”

Growing influence of personal branding Another emerging dynamic is the growing influence of personal branding. According to Scott, customers are placing increasing trust in the individuals behind businesses, rather than corporate identities alone. This shift is prompting firms to elevate the visibility of leadership teams as part of their marketing approach.

Despite the range of strategic tools available, Scott warned against reactive behaviour, particularly in marketing investment. He described a common cycle in which companies increase spending during downturns and reduce it when order books recover, creating instability in lead generation.

“The key is consistency,” he said. “If you keep marketing when you’re busy, that’s when you can improve margins, raise prices and choose better customers.”

While the near-term outlook for the fenestration sector remains challenging, Scott’s message was that conditions are not uniformly negative. For firms able to combine strategic focus with consistent execution, the current environment may offer opportunities to strengthen market position as competitors fall away.

“In a shrinking market,” he said, “standing still is not an option.”

Whiteline’s renewed showroom pairs polished ambition with proven quality, giving a trusted manufacturer fresh commercial allure

hiteline Manufacturing, one of the UK’s leading window and door fabricators, has opened a fully redesigned showroom, using the launch to underline its focus on retail customers and to introduce three new product ranges. The company held an exclusive preview of the new space in April before opening it more widely to its customer base and the local community. The invitation-only event gave partners an early look at the updated layout and a broader selection of installed products, allowing them to experience first-hand the ranges they sell to homeowners.

At the launch, Whiteline’s managing director, Louise Evans, framed the showroom as a practical investment in customer support rather than simply a cosmetic upgrade. “Each of you, our customers, really are what makes Whiteline a success, and this is why we wanted to share this launch with you,” she said.

The company says the showroom has been designed with a clear commercial purpose: to help retail customers present products more effectively to their own clients. Alongside Whiteline’s exclusive ranges, the space also features products from supply partners including Liniar, Sheerline, KAT UK and Ingenious.

“When we designed this space, it was with one thing in mind: helping you, our customers, to help your customers,” Evans said.

“This showroom is for use by you, your teams and your customers, any time you wish to use it.”

The upgraded showroom includes new display installations across Whiteline’s own-brand ranges, including SlimSash and Define, as well as more recent product launches. The aim is to allow retail customers and end users to see, touch and compare products in one setting.

Whiteline has also used the redesign to bring more technology into the space. Features include the Tedee Smart Thumbturn, reflecting growing interest in smart home products, and a bespoke pull-out display intended to show the full breadth of door slab options available through the company.

Beyond the showroom floor itself, the site includes training and conference facilities that customers can book for product demonstrations, team sessions and business development meetings. That broadens the function of the site from a display area to a more flexible commercial resource.

The launch also served as a platform for Whiteline to introduce three additions to its portfolio: the Roof Collection, which expands the company into aluminium roofs and the outdoor living and extension markets; the Hurricane Door, positioned as a premiumstyle product at a more accessible price point; and the Sheerglide Inline Patio Door, which is still to come but has already attracted

attention from customers and supply partners.

“Alongside the Whiteline classics you have all come to love, this showroom has given us the opportunity to bring you three new and exciting product ranges,” Evans said. “This is just the start of that innovation journey for Whiteline. Feedback from customers at the preview event was strongly positive, with several pointing to the improved layout and the opportunity to see newer products up close.

Paul Kennedy of Hampton Court Windows said: “Very impressive displays in this new showroom. I like the layout of it. There’s the new product that we haven’t seen up close until now, like the new Sheerline Inline Patio.”

Chris Blanks and Barry Chadwick from Elwyns said they were “really impressed” and described the new showroom as “certainly an improvement from what Whiteline had previously”.

David Johnson from Window Plan said the redesigned site had “a great, modern open plan feel”.

Supply partners were similarly upbeat. Tony Basile, sales director at Sheerline, described it as “probably one of the nicest showrooms we’ve seen in a long time” and said the chance to present the latest Sheerglide and S3 Roof products had proved “an absolute hit with the clients”.

Jon Stanway of KAT UK said the launch had been “a fantastic day” and described the showroom as “the perfect way to present the exciting new Hurricane Door”.

For Whiteline, the showroom launch appears to be about more than a refreshed environment. It is also a statement about the direction of the business, combining product expansion with a renewed emphasis on customer support. As Evans told guests, “There have been a lot of changes at Whiteline these last few years, but one thing remains the same: our commitment to deliver innovative, quality products, alongside our desire to support you, our loyal customer base, in growing your business.”

The showroom is now open for bookings, with retailers able to arrange visits through Whiteline’s customer services team.

Anthracite Grey’s dominance fades as window colour trends shift toward solid finishes and emerging new tones

ne thing in life is certain. Trends and taste change. So is Anthracite Grey, the go-to PVC-U colour, for installations for the last decade, about to join Avocado Green bathrooms, Burnt Orange kitchens and Sepia Brown deep rug-pile carpets; in the colour graveyard in the sky?

According to Deceuninck, the answer is ‘yes’, just not quite yet.

“Our colour offer has evolved massively in the last decade”, says Darren Woodcock, General Manager, Deceuninck. “Anthracite Grey is on borrowed time”, he adds.

Established foils in decline The latest figures for UK and Ireland from Renolit, show that there has been a big shift in PVC-U foils in the last year. According to the laminate finish specialist greys took a massive hit in volume, with anthracite grey the biggest loser - down 31% in 2024. Gale Grey, Slate Grey and Hazy Grey, dropping by 27%, 98% and 9% respectively.

“If you think those figures are out, you have to look at the starting point. Anthracite Grey and Gale Grey still currently makes up 34% of the market”, Darren continues: “so we and everyone else are still doing a lot of volume – but if you’re looking at what’s trending and what isn’t ‘greige’ seems to have had its day.”

Woodgrains left for dust by solid colours The other big shift according to figures from Renolit is the wider shift away from woodgrains to solid colours. A trend first flagged by Deceuninck in its consumer research.

The YouGov Deceuninck commissioned national consumer survey found younger consumers favoured smooth and solid colours above woodgrains and patterns.

According to Renolit this compares to 83% versus 17% for the UK and Ireland as a whole.

Tracking the UK and Irish markets as a whole, the Renolit figures reveal sustained growth in solid colour options from 53% of the market in 2016, rising to 83% in 2025.

“We can see that there has been an overwhelming shift to smooth colour finishes over the last 10-years”, Darren continues.

“Woodgrains still make up a considerable share of what we do, but the popularity of solid and smooth foils, is significant. It’s evidence of a general growth in appeal, but also that they have also gained ground specifically with a younger demographic.

“We should be applying that insight in how we target homeowners and particularly consumers in their 30s, 40s and 50s.”

Which colours are trending for windows and doors in 2026?

So, if Anthracite Grey is coming to the end of its shelf-life, what’s replacing it? Well, according to the Renolit figures Beck Brown/ Black Brown is very much in the ascendency, with 12% growth yearon-year accounting 24% of total volume in the market as a whole this year.

Agate Grey saw a 18% rise to account for 4% of the market for coloured foils last year. Pebble Grey Smooth seeing a 100% uptick,

with Cement Grey seeing 64% growth and Pebble Grey achieving 14% growth.

Deceuninck leading the way on trending colours for windows and doors “What’s interesting is to compare figures for Deceuninck and its customers last year, to the national trends for the UK and Ireland”, Darren says.

“Anthracite Grey, while still important as part of our colour mix, made up less than 13% of Deceuninck and Deceuninck customer sales - this compares to 34% nationally.

ith the light evenings with us for the next few months, parents across the country will already be experiencing mixed feelings as this period also brings added difficulties and stress trying to get their children to go to sleep easily. Curtains and standard blinds often don’t seem quite up to the challenge of preventing daylight so, for many, this prompts action, and it is why we see a spike in enquiries for our pleated blackout integral blinds at this time of the year.

This is an important window of opportunity for installers to provide a valuable solution to parents considering the scale of the issue. According to a 2023 independent survey of UK parents with 3-8 year old children, it takes youngsters an average of 45 minutes longer to get to sleep in summer compared with winter. And for nearly a fifth (19%) of children, it can take over an hour longer.

And what was the number one reason why parents said their children take longer to get to sleep in the summer months? Over half (55%) blamed the increased daylight around bedtime.

Excessive daylight when trying to sleep is not only an issue for parents of young children, however. Many night shift workers also attribute poor sleep quality during the day to too much light in their bedroom, and that can lead to fatigue and an inability to focus on their work when they return to the next shift.

As enquiries slow and margins tighten, installers face growing pressure to convert more leads into completed sales

he latest Business Pilot UK Window & Door Installer Report revealed a stark statistic; around six in ten leads are still not converting into sales, despite conversion rates remaining broadly consistent across the industry.

It is a finding that reframes the challenge facing installers. According to Business Pilot Managing Director, Elton Boocock, the issue is no longer simply about generating more enquiries, but about what happens to them once they arrive.

“Eliminating wasted opportunity is where the real gains are,” he says. “The data shows there is still intent from homeowners, but too many businesses don’t have the systems in place to manage that intent properly.

“It’s not about chasing more leads, it’s about converting more of the ones you already have.”

Understanding customer decision journeys That shift in focus is particularly relevant given the way today’s customers behave.

As highlighted in the white paper, many enquiries, especially those generated early in the year, are part of a longer decision-making process.

Homeowners are researching, comparing options and often delaying commitment until a later date, and so without a structured approach to follow-up, those leads are easily mistaken for lost opportunities.

Raising confidence in front door security R ecent research has highlighted a disconnect between what an entrance door should deliver and how secure homeowners actually feel. It’s an issue Gerda’s Danny Williams is already addressing headon, as seen in his latest TV campaign.

Research commissioned by hardware specialist Ultion has revealed that just 21% of women say they are very confident their front door lock would protect them in a break-in. As shocking as this sounds, for Danny Williams, director of Gerda Doors UK, there’s a wider context at play that should give the trade pause for thought: “Beneath the headline that shows how women feel, it was also revealed that confidence among men is almost as low at just 32%. So this is far from a single demographic issue. The reality is most homeowners don’t have a front door that truly makes them feel secure in their own home.”

The same study found that many women feel unsafe approaching their home after dark, with 40% saying they would feel safer if they didn’t have to search for keys – suggesting keyless entry or smart access could make a real difference.

“The research inevitably draws attention to hardware and rightly so,” says Danny. “But focusing solely on cylinders and high-tech solutions does risk missing a bigger, far more widespread, issue: this isn’t just about the locks.

“A good lock on a bad door is still a bad job. So be careful focusing on add-ons, when the actual door has to do the hard work first.

If a door flexes, moves or drops over time, you’ve compromised the whole system before you’ve even started.”

The hardware behind successful door design A s architects and specifiers continue to push contemporary design towards larger openings, cleaner sightlines and more flexible interiors, doors remain central to how a space is experienced. They shape first impressions, influence movement and help define the relationship between rooms. Yet while attention often falls on the door itself, it is the hardware behind the system that determines whether that design ambition is realised in practice.

Both can enhance light flow, maximise usable space and support a modern aesthetic. But the success of either system depends not only on how it looks on installation day, but on how it performs over time.

Tracks, rollers, guides and soft-close mechanisms all play a direct role in how smoothly, quietly and safely a door operates. When specified correctly, they help maintain alignment, reliability and ease of use across the lifecycle of the installation. When overlooked, they can quickly undermine the intended effect, leaving doors difficult to operate and vulnerable to misalignment.

The choice between sliding and folding systems is one of the first specification decisions. Sliding doors are often selected for their minimal appearance and unobtrusive operation.

With fewer panels, they are well suited to residential living spaces and commercial offices where uninterrupted views and straightforward functionality are priorities.

Folding doors, by contrast, are designed to open an aperture fully, with panels stacking neatly to create stronger connections between adjoining spaces.

That makes them particularly effective for large openings and transitions between inside and outside, but also places greater demands on the hardware because multiple moving panels, hinges and pivot points

must work in coordination.

The starting point, then, is not simply aesthetics, but use. Who will operate the door, where it will be located and how often it will be opened should all inform hardware selection. A door in a busy commercial environment, for instance, will place very different demands on its system than one in a private home.

Key factors shaping performance Weight is another decisive factor, and one too often underestimated. Contemporary projects increasingly favour larger door leaves and combinations of timber, aluminium and glass to achieve a particular look, but these choices place greater demands on supporting hardware. As panel size and weight increase, so must the load capacity of tracks and rollers. In folding doors especially, weight distribution is critical because the hardware must manage both vertical and lateral movement while maintaining alignment. If not addressed early, the result can be sagging panels, excessive wear and reduced performance.

Opening dimensions and structural conditions also need careful consideration.

Manufacturers typically define maximum panel widths, heights and thicknesses for their systems, providing the limits within which performance can be assured.

Environmental factors matter too. Corrosion resistance, durability and maintenance requirements can all influence long-term usability and cost, particularly in exposed settings or high-traffic areas.

Material choice adds another layer of complexity. Timber, aluminium and PVC-U each bring distinct characteristics, and those differences affect not just appearance but installation, mechanism positioning and thermal performance. Timber is often used with top-hung folding systems, where hinge pins may extend into top rollers. Aluminium systems, by comparison, can accommodate bottom roller housings within their panel profiles.

Timber can also be used in this way, but may require bespoke bottom profiles or panel corner removal to house the roller system.

Thermal considerations are equally important. Sliding and folding doors can support airflow and ventilation when open, but energy efficiency when closed

depends in part on material choice. Timber offers natural insulation, while aluminium and PVC-U are not inherently as effective in that regard, even if they may provide advantages in durability, particularly in more demanding environments.

Alongside performance and practicality, compliance remains a non-negotiable part of specification. In the UK, sliding and folding doors must meet building regulations covering safety, security and energy efficiency. Accessibility is one example.

Where wheelchair access is required, openings must comply with Approved Document M and allow suitable access for people with limited mobility. Security is another, with many new-build projects requiring compliance with PAS 24 and Secured by Design standards.

Yet even here, the discussion returns to design. Hardware is no longer treated as purely functional. Increasingly, it forms part of the visual language of a project. Finishes can reinforce design intent as much as operational quality. Matte black has grown in popularity as a bold, versatile choice across residential and commercial settings, while stainless steel continues to appeal in schemes that favour a clean appearance and need durability and corrosion resistance, especially on exterior doors or in heavily used spaces.

The broader point is that hardware is not a secondary consideration. In contemporary architecture, it can shape how a space functions and feels as much as the door itself. As projects continue to favour larger openings and more adaptable layouts, successful specification depends on looking beyond the visible surface. The hidden strength of composite doors F

rom the pavement, and to a casual observer, most front doors will tell a similar story, creating kerb appeal with an almost infinite palette of colours, designs and a vast array of glazing and hardware options.

But as with many products, the real difference between a highquality composite and one that may fail to live up to even the most basic performance criteria, is rarely visible at first glance.

Two products could look almost identical, but could be separated by a wealth of engineering hidden beneath the surface.

It’s the same reason a car door can feel reassuringly solid or strangely hollow, why one mattress lasts a decade while another sags within months or why certain smartphones last for years while others might become redundant before the end of their contract.

Front door design trends gain ground as homeowners invest more

s homeowners continue to prioritise improving existing properties over relocating, attention is increasingly turning to the front door as both a security feature and a defining design element. According to Ultion, this shift reflects a broader focus on kerb appeal, with industry estimates from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors suggesting exterior upgrades can raise a home’s value by up to 10%.

Among the most immediate ways to refresh a property’s exterior is through changes to the front door and its hardware. What was once considered a purely functional aspect of the home is now being treated with the same design consideration as interior spaces.

One of the clearest trends is a move toward coordinated door furniture.

This high reflects the ongoing success of the Wakefield-based fabricator’s approach to sales and marketing in support of its wider Retail Network. The uplift in leads represents consistent monthon-month growth since its launch one year ago, and forms part of the company’s wider digital marketing strategy.

At a time when customer acquisition costs across the home improvement sector are rising, this increase demonstrates the effectiveness of CO Manufacturing’s structured and free-to-access approach to product marketing.

The Forté campaign, delivered primarily through paid social activity, is fully funded

Korniche lantern targets faster trade installation M ade for Trade’s latest Korniche roof lantern has been developed with installers firmly in mind, combining slimmer aluminium sightlines with a simplified fitting process designed to reduce time on site.

The new generation Korniche system builds on the success of the original award-winning lantern, with Made for Trade describing the product as stronger, warmer, slimmer and faster to install. For the glazed extension market, where speed, accuracy and finish all matter, the company is positioning Korniche as a premium aluminium lantern that can help installers deliver a high-end result with fewer complications.

A key part of the system’s appeal is its installation-led design. Made for Trade says the Korniche lantern uses fewer components, pre-assembled elements and a factory-prepared kit format to help ensure a consistent fit. The product requires no on-site cutting and has been designed to minimise silicone use, reducing some of the common variables that can slow down roof lantern installation.

As part of the upgrade, installers can now purchase a wide range of brick slips directly through Ultraframe as part of their hup! order. This integration removes the need for separate suppliers, simplifying specification, streamlining invoicing, and ensuring customers receive exactly the right components for each project.

The new brick slip offering will also be available within the upcoming release of Udesign, enabling installers to visualise finishes, configure project details and automatically calculate precise quantities of plan bricks, corner bricks and mortar. The new software release provides designers with increased flexibility, including options for aperture trim finishes or side reveals with or without soldier courses. Brick rails will be configured automatically to suit the chosen aperture detailing, with corner bricks used for corners, reveals and soldier courses.

Colour charts and price lists for the expanded brick slip range are now available on the Ultraframe Trade Website. Brick slips will be delivered to site shortly after the hup! kit on a separate delivery, helping to support efficient workflow on site.

Secondary glazing has moved beyond niche retrofit into a practical, profitable option for installers, says Mike Bygrave of Incarnation

Secondary glazing in growing demand S econdary glazing is not new, but what is changing is how often it has become a viable option for installers.

With restricted refurbishments, tighter budgets and a growing volume of heritage and conservation work, full window replacement is often not feasible. Secondary glazing has been addressing these challenges for decades, raising the question of whether it should now play a more prominent role in installers’ offering.

Where secondary fits The clearest use case remains listed buildings and strict conservation projects, where planning restrictions prevent changes to original windows regardless of how poorly they perform. Secondary glazing works within those constraints, leaving the primary window untouched while delivering real thermal and acoustic improvement from the inside.

But the heritage sector is only part of the picture. Office-to-residential conversions and large-scale commercial refurbishments present similar challenges. At that scale, replacing primary windows across an entire building means disruption, access complications and costs that many schemes cannot absorb. This kind of project is an increasingly regular part of many installers’ pipelines, and the trend shows no sign of slowing.

Standard residential work is shifting too. Not every homeowner enquiring about draughty Victorian sashes is ready to commit to full replacement. A lower-cost

alternative that addresses the problem can keep those jobs on the board.

What secondary delivers The thermal improvement is straightforward. Single-glazed windows with U-values around 4–5 W/m2K can typically be brought to 2 W/m2K or better, depending on specification.

Acoustically, secondary glazing often outperforms expectations. The reason is the cavity between the primary and secondary panes. Unlike sealed double-glazed units, which are constrained to relatively narrow gaps, secondary glazing allows for much wider separations, meaning combined reductions of around 40–45 decibels are achievable in the right configuration. In noisy urban locations or near transport links, that is frequently the primary driver. It is also increasingly finding its way into general refurbishment and new build schemes where acoustic requirements are becoming harder to meet through other means.

Practicality Secondary glazing is manufactured in aluminium, and that choice is not incidental. Slimline profiles keep the internal footprint discreet, which is important when matching existing window sightlines. Strength and rigidity come without bulk, and aluminium accommodates a wide range of configurations: sliding, hinged and lift-out units, used individually or in combination to match almost any primary window type.

Secondary is installed from inside, which removes the need for external access, scaffolding or structural work. Units arrive madeto-measure, installation is clean and straightforward, and disruption to the building and its occupants is minimal. There is also an underrated practical advantage: the work can

go ahead in any weather. Through winter months, when external installations are often delayed, that continuity has real value.

Secondary glazing will remain a niche, as the volumes are not there to anchor a business around it. But it does offer a solid, low-friction way to take on more work.

Because fewer companies actively offer it, competition is limited. Projects in this space tend to be specification-led rather than price-driven, as customers want a solution to a specific problem. That distinction shows in margins. Surveying is straightforward and installation requires no significant retraining, so secondary glazing can sit comfortably alongside an existing product range without changing how the business operates.

Emmegi (UK) delivers wider machine choice through Voilap portfolio

mmegi has supplied its second Someco machine to aluminium and PVC-U fabricator Mahon Windows in Athlone, Ireland, and in the process demonstrated the benefits to customers of being able to source machines from across the Voilap portfolio direct from Emmegi (UK).

Mahon Windows had already had an Emmegi Phantomatic M3 machine and a Someco 4TVH in-line welder supplied and installed by Emmegi’s specialist sales and engineering team based in Ireland, and had been so impressed by the buying experience that it opted for Emmegi once again when it was choosing a new PVC-U sawing and machining centre.

James O’Connell, Emmegi’s Sales Manager for Ireland, advised the Mahon team on the best machine from the Someco range to suit their needs. He said: “After several years of working together, we have built up a valuable understanding of the Mahon Windows operation and identified the Someco SBZ SM11 CNC as the ideal machine to support their current volumes and future growth plans.

Fentrade strengthens growth plans with major Elumatec investment

ndependent specialist trade fabricator Fentrade is continuing its growth strategy with a significant six-figure investment in new Elumatec machinery.

As part of the overall expansion plans following on from the recent announcement about the relocation to larger premises, the South Wales based manufacturer has completed the purchase of an Elumatec SBZ145 Profile Machining Centre to complement the increased capacity of the new premises.

Commenting on the latest investment, Chris Reeks, Fentrade’s Managing Director, was buoyant about the purchase: “The introduction of the SBZ145 into our manufacturing process will allow us to mechanise the process more, providing better production efficiency and also further enhance our high-quality standards”. Chris continued: “Whilst this is one of the largest machinery purchases we’ve made to date, we’re confident that this will help us to consolidate ourselves as a specialist trade manufacturer and meet our ambitious growth plans for the coming years”.

The Elumatec SBZ145 features five processing axes which will perform multiple cutting and routing operations on individual bar lengths or alternatively process pre-cut lengths. A large viewing window allows the operator to monitor the progress of the

machining whilst the onboard mobile tool changer with its eighteen tool seats allows for quicker tool-change times. Linking to the latest EluCAD software allows the machine to be programmed from both the office and the machine maximising the time the operator spends at the machine.

luminium Doors and Windows Ltd has accelerated its manufacturing performance by 30% following investment in a new Kombimatec AMC328 CNC machining centre – strengthening efficiency, consistency and capacity as demand grows.

Among these innovations is the Bi-fold system, featuring a new 45 mm sash that allows the sightlines of the meeting stile to be reduced to 100 mm.

Cortizo has also added its range of interior partition systems. Accordingly, the Croydon and Leeds showrooms now display the new Design 35, an industrial-style solution featuring aluminium profiles with a depth of just 35 mm, allowing spaces to be partitioned while maintaining visual connection between them.

The brand is also presenting its new product, the Millennium Wall, which will reach the market in the coming weeks.

It is a system of fixed lights and doors designed for high-traffic environments, featuring an anti-finger-trap mechanism to ensure user safety.

Senior puts innovation into motion

enior Architectural Systems has supplied a full package of aluminium fenestration systems for the new headquarters of electric motor manufacturer YASA in Oxfordshire. The new facility is the first of five specialist buildings to be completed as part of The Ranges development at Bicester Motion. Designed by 3DReid and constructed by Kier, the project features glazing elements fabricated and installed by specialist contractor Elite Aluminium.

Located on the site of a former RAF bomber station, Bicester Motion is a 444 acre, world leading mobility campus and technology hub. The Ranges development will expand the specialist facilities available on the campus, with the first of its bespoke new buildings bringing together YASA’s research, development, and production operations into a single purpose built site.

Senior’s long-tern supply chain partner Elite Aluminium installed the façade package, working closely with Kier and 3DReid to ensure seamless integration with the building’s steel frame and envelope.

To meet the project’s performance, sustainability, and design requirements, Senior’s SF52 capped aluminium curtain wall system was specified for the building’s striking glazed elevations and linked walkway. The system provides the structural capability required for large spans of glazing while delivering consistent sightlines across the façade. Another standout design feature is the use of the SF52 curtain walling to create the ribbon windows positioned

beneath the roof verges.

Senior’s popular SF52 system is also supported by a new Environmental Product Declaration that provides accurate and comprehensive data, which unlike comparable documents from other manufacturers, does not include glazing to prevent skewed carbon calculations.

To enhance safety and security at key access points, Senior’s PURe® Commercial Doors were installed. As the largest and strongest doors in Senior’s portfolio, the PURe® system is ideally suited to industrial and high traffic environments and as part of the patented PURe® range, the doors also contribute to the building’s overall efficiency by achieving low U values and offering excellent durability. Elite Aluminium also fabricated and installed Senior’s SPW501 aluminium automatic sliding doors throughout.

The completed building forms a central part of the wider Bicester Motion development and supports YASA’s continued expansion in electric motor technology.

Unified competency for safer construction

In collaboration with industry partners, CAB is helping shape clearer competency standards, training pathways and safer construction practice

n a post-Grenfell world, the importance of competency across the building envelope sector has never been greater. As regulations are reformed, competence must be demonstrated at every stage of the supply chain, from design and specification through to installation and maintenance.

With a focus on the establishment of a unified and consistent approach to competency, the Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) is working collaboratively with key industry bodies, including the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) and the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), through the Joint Competence Initiative for the Building Envelopes Sector (JCI).

Bringing together multiple organisations under a single framework, the JCI is designed to ensure that competency standards are aligned and clearly defined.

“Competence is something we all deal with day-to-day,” says Nigel Headford, CEO CAB, and Director of the JCI. “Assuming is no longer good enough. Competency must be evidenced and this means the way we interpret regulations and requirements is critical.

“In uniting with other associations through the JCI, we are able to talk with one voice about competency and remain at the forefront of developments to update and inform our own members, as well as the wider industry.

“It also means that when we are talking to government, we are all on the same page, and better able to influence outcomes.”

With the demonstration of skills, knowledge, and experience essential to meeting regulations and maintaining trust, CAB, as part of the JCI, is also working alongside organisations, including CSCS and the GQA, to deliver new training and career competency frameworks.

Creating clearer career pathways Aiming to remove ambiguity around skills development and reflect the interconnected nature of the building envelope sector, CAB members are invited to offer feedback for consideration in the creation of pathways across fenestration, curtain walling and related sectors.

“One of the challenges historically has been understanding

where you sit and what pathway you’re on,” explains Nigel. “This new framework joins everything together, so whether you’re in installation, fabrication or design, there’s a clear route for progression.

“This will include apprenticeships, newly qualified roles and ongoing professional training to make sure that competency is baked in from entry level through to senior positions.”

Recognising continuous professional development Alongside formal training pathways, CAB is also championing the recognition of continuous professional development (CPD) as a core component of competency. While many organisations already deliver high-quality training to clients and partners, this activity is not always formally recorded or recognised within industry systems – but CAB is working to change this.

“We want to make sure that if you’re delivering CPD, whether it’s to an architect, installer or anyone in the supply chain, that learning is recognised,” says Nigel.

“The aim is for that attendance to be recorded, so individuals can demonstrate that they are continually developing their competence, helping to create a more transparent and accountable workforce.”

As the regulatory landscape continues to evolve, the role of organisations like CAB becomes increasingly important.

Ultimately, competency is not just about compliance but about raising standards across the construction sector.

Through its technical leadership and work with industry partners, its commitment to professional development and its proactive engagement with regulators, CAB is helping to build a more skilled, more accountable and more resilient building envelope sector for the future.

Winning business in uncertain times

Mike Parczuk of Sternfenster explains how installers can adapt sales strategies and maintain momentum during growing economic uncertainty

T

he conflict in the Middle East is disrupting supply chains and increasing manufacturing costs. It is also influencing something equally important for installers – consumer confidence. What should home improvement companies be doing now to win business?

GfK’s Consumer Confidence Index fell four points to -25 in April, with expectations for the wider economy over the next 12 months dropping to -43, the lowest level since February 2023. GfK said consumers “really do have the jitters now”, highlighting pressure from fuel costs and the prospect of further energy price rises.

“2025 was a challenge with lower consumer demand in the face of higher inflation. That was coming down but the crisis in the Middle East has pushed up oil and energy costs and turned everything on its head,” says Mike Parczuk, Managing Director, Sternfenster.

“Consumers have been hit by an economic shock, from what we pay at the pumps to a cup of coffee. And from July this year, energy bills will add further pressure. That will make things tougher in the short term, but for the window and door industry it could represent a big opportunity.”

Mike highlights that economic uncertainty changes consumer behaviour, with big-ticket purchases like windows and doors often delayed as homeowners become more cautious, enquiries soften and price sensitivity increases.

“We’ve seen similar patterns before, from the financial crisis through to Covid and the cost-of-living squeeze. We know what we need to do. It’s about discipline and adaptation. Opportunities always present themselves.”

Selling energy efficiency The context is important. Ofgem’s price cap for a typical dual-fuel household is currently £1,641 between April and June 2026.

Cornwall Insight forecasts the July to September cap will rise to £1,843.01 – an increase of just over £200 a year.

“If you want evidence that the energy efficiency message resonates, look at solar panel installations, which have been fitted every three minutes since the Iran conflict.”

Official figures support this. There were more than 27,000 solar installations in March, the highest monthly total in 14 years.

Applications for heat pump grants also reached their secondhighest level on record.

Mike argues the lack of comparable demand for windows and doors comes down to two factors.

“The first is payback and evidence. Solar has very clear payback times. The Energy Saving Trust suggests installations cost about £6,100 and deliver savings of up to £650 a year, paying back in 9–15 years.

“The second is funding. Government solar grants ended years ago, but the private sector stepped in with finance and green loans, linking cost to payback.

“As an industry, windows and doors haven’t been as effective at building that link between investment and return, or wrapping finance in a ‘green’ message that resonates with homeowners.”

Action to take today While people still want warmer homes, better security and improved aesthetics, the challenge is how those benefits are communicated.

“Uncertainty doesn’t stop people buying windows and doors, but it does change how they buy,” Mike adds.

He argues the industry must move from reactive to proactive sales, where tools and support make a measurable difference.

Sternfenster has invested in digital sales infrastructure to help installers win work more efficiently, even in challenging conditions.

“If you can show a homeowner exactly what they’re buying, give them a clear quote there and then, and manage the process efficiently, you’re ahead of the competition,” Mike says.

“We need to evidence performance, payback and value. The advantage over solar is that windows and doors also have an emotional driver – people choose them for how they look.

“If you can spend £10k on new windows and doors and make your home more secure, better looking and more energy efficient, you’d choose that over a heat pump. Not to take away from their environmental benefits, but heat pumps are ugly!”

Controlling your sales process Controlling the controllables is also key, both in selling and pricing. With costs changing rapidly due to global pressures, installers need to rethink traditional approaches.

Sternfenster is encouraging customers to take practical steps including reducing quote validity periods, avoiding long-term fixed pricing without safeguards, building in price adjustment mechanisms, and applying transparent surcharges where needed.

“It’s about protecting margin as much as winning work,” Mike says. “There’s no point winning a job today if it costs you money tomorrow.”

He argues one of the most powerful tools installers have right now is honest communication. The reality, he says, is that homeowners are already aware of rising costs and global disruption.

Rather than avoiding conversations about price increases, installers should lean into them. Sternfenster provides communication packs to help installers handle these discussions confidently.

uture-proofing is one of those phrases that gets used so often in manufacturing it risks losing meaning, says Neil Parton, Managing Director, elumatec UK. In practice, it’s rarely about sweeping transformation or disruptive change. Instead, it comes down to something far more practical: making the right decisions at the right time, in the right order, so a fabrication business remains adaptable in the face of constant industry evolution.

In the aluminium sector especially, we’re seeing that resilience is no longer defined by size or even turnover. It’s defined by flexibility.

The businesses that continue to perform well are those that can respond quickly to new system requirements, tighter project deadlines, and increasingly complex profiles — without having to reinvent their entire production setup each time.

Building the right foundation So what does a future-proof fabrication business actually look like on the ground?

It usually doesn’t start with a factory overhaul. More often, it begins with a single, well-considered investment.

That investment might be a machine that integrates cleanly into an existing workflow, rather than forcing a full reconfiguration of the shop floor. It might be a system that doesn’t just solve today’s production requirements, but can also accommodate tomorrow’s.

And importantly, it’s rarely about chasing the most advanced specification for its own sake. It’s about choosing technology that aligns with where the business is heading — not just where it is now.

One of the most overlooked aspects of future-proofing is scalability. Fabricators don’t always need everything upfront. What they do need is confidence that their equipment won’t become a limitation as demand grows or as projects evolve.

That’s why modular thinking in production technology has become so important. The ability to expand capability, adapt to larger or more complex profiles, or integrate additional automation at a later stage gives fabricators breathing room. It removes the pressure to “get everything right” in one go, which is rarely realistic in a commercial environment.

Flexibility as a long-term advantage Of course, technology alone doesn’t future-proof a business. Skills, processes and planning all play an equally important role.

Instead, they will be the ones that make deliberate, strategic decisions about when and how to invest. Future-proofing, then, is not a destination. It’s a mindset. It’s the ability to build capability gradually, without locking yourself into a single path.

And in a manufacturing landscape that continues to evolve at pace, that may be the most valuable investment of all.

Magnetic appeal of easy-control slider wand The new slider with wand combination is available as an option for the ScreenLine® SV and SV+ magnetic slider controlled integral blinds

ust over a year since it was launched, the innovative slider wand control option for the Uni-Blinds® SV and SV+ Systems is proving to be a welcome addition to the specification of Morley Glass’s most popular integral blind system amongst customers where accessibility to the standard slider may be an issue.

Although a relatively simple concept, the slider wand’s development involved an extensive research and development process by ScreenLine® integral blind systems manufacturer Pellini S.p.A., with whom Morley Glass has partnered for 22 years. Their aim was to engineer and test an aluminium and high-grade plastic assembly, complete with a Sanitized® coating to offer antimicrobial protection, which will not only stand the test of time but achieve strong aesthetic appeal.

The result is a product that can provide a robust control device for SV and SV+ System blinds installed in windows that wheelchair users or people with mobility issues may find difficult to reach. Euroglaze expands Rehau product portfolio with Artevo Window System

uroglaze has just added Rehau’s Passivhaus compliant Artevo window system to its product offering – further strengthening its claim to offer the most comprehensive range of Rehau products of any trade fabricator in the UK. Artevo uses Rehau’s 100% recyclable Rau-Fipro-X glass-reinforced PVC, which is stronger and lighter than conventional PVC and allows for bigger window and door units to be fabricated without the need for steel reinforcement. That means slimmer profiles, improved thermal performance and, with a minimum of 75% recycled content, exceptional sustainability credentials.

The one-stop service for arched and shaped windows and doors

haped frame specialist Premier Arches is proving that it can make ordering complex and bespokeshaped windows and doors more straightforward with its one-stop service on shaped frames and glass units.

Manufacturing from its dedicated facility in St Helens, the specialist fabricator experienced solid growth throughout 2025 and is finding that more and more trade customers are turning to them for a comprehensive service on arched, round and angled PVCu frames.

“It’s not unusual for fabricators, installers and trade counters to source their own IGUs,” says Joe Trueman, Director at Premier Arches. “But shaped insulated glass units create a more complex ordering process, purely because of their bespoke nature.

If you’re working from templates, it can

mean creating more than one to share with multiple suppliers, and juggling different deadlines too.

“It’s much easier and more efficient for trade customers to let us take care of the glass as well as the bespoke-shaped frames, ordering everything at the same time and having everything delivered together.”

Premier Arches works closely with its glass partners to offer a range of decorative glass options, as well as standard IGUs, to deliver the one-stop service with no compromise on design choice.

Bloom Blinds targets overheating risks with integrated shading system

loom Blinds is positioning its “Behind the Glass” shading system as a specification upgrade for installers and specifiers seeking to address overheating risks in homes with large areas of glazing.

Expansive glass installations and seamless indoor-outdoor layouts remain highly attractive to homeowners, but can contribute to significant solar gain during warmer months, leaving internal environments uncomfortable when properties are unoccupied, particularly for households with pets left at home during the day.

The system is designed to sit within the glazing bead, integrating into the glazing unit rather than being face-fixed.

This allows the blinds to provide effective shading without compromising sightlines, door operation or the clean appearance

expected in modern installations.

Bloom Blinds is presenting the product as a performance-led solution that retains the aesthetic benefits of larger glazed openings. The system helps manage solar gain and reduce internal heat build-up, while preserving natural light and privacy.

Kömmerling VS delivers the complete heritage window package

s the trend for Modern Heritage heats up, Kömmerling is pleased to support customers with its vertical slider system that leaves no stone unturned for installers looking to maximise on this opportunity.

It is also available in a range of shapes and styles and although it comes with equal sized top and bottom sashes as standard, it can be manufactured to other split ratios.

“The market is still fragile,” continues Gareth, “so installers need to be able to say yes to every project that comes their way. We have tried to ensure that we have covered all bases with plenty of options in our VS system.

Installers can also reassure their customers that the system originated from a sustainable supplier because we were one of the first manufacturers to move away from lead-based stabilisers in favour of more environmentally friendly calcium zinc-based alternatives.

Additionally, we were a founding member of an industry-wide project to implement a closed-loop recycling system whereby old PVC-U windows and doors are recycled and used to make new windows and doors. For the eco-conscious consumer, these extra measures matter.

BDC Aluminium has appointed Zac Nedimovic, who has over two decades of industry experience across manufacturing, installation and sales, as its new Group Aluminium Sales Manager. Zac’s career in fenestration began in 2003 when he developed hands-on experience across PVC-U and aluminium systems. In his new role at BDC Aluminium, Zac will enhance the company’s position within the aluminium market, focusing particularly on strengthening customer relationships and driving sustainable growth. A key objective is to ensure that internal systems and processes effectively support customers, while developing a clear market proposition based on premium products backed by exceptional service. Zac is passionate about delivering quality, both in product and service, and is committed to building long-term customer relationships through reliability and consistency.

The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has appointed Amy Hopton-Smith as its new Head of Commercial and Operations, marking a further step in strengthening the organisation’s leadership team as it continues to evolve its commercial and operational focus. Amy has played a pivotal role within the Federation, particularly across membership engagement and development as Head of Membership.

In her new role, Amy will be responsible for driving commercial performance and operational delivery across the Federation. Simon Moore is AluK’s new Area Sales Manager for the Northern region. Glazing and construction sector specialist Purplex Marketing has appointed current employee Alex Lee as its new Head of Client Relations, a strategic role created to strengthen customer partnerships and improve collaboration across the business.

Welsh fabricator Dudley’s Aluminium has promoted Ben Leonard to Production Manager, recognising his commitment to the company and professional development over the last decade.

Ben joined the team as an estimator in 2016 and progressed into procurement after three years, supporting the production team and project delivery.

Upon his promotion to Production Manager in March, Ben said: “I am excited to take on this new role and thank Dudley’s for this opportunity. The team has been incredibly supportive of my career progression over the last 10 years, particularly Nigel, my predecessor in this role. I look forward to building on the firm’s success.”

In his new role Ben will be responsible for planning and organising production, alongside overseeing the daily production process, ensuring material deliveries are organised correctly, and that staff are compliant with health and safety regulations.

Jade has appointed Richard Lawrence into a newly formed role of QHSE manager, responsible for improving systems and standards around quality, delivery and customer satisfaction. Richard brings with him a wealth of knowledge and expertise gained across SMEs, where his focus was consistently on pushing for continuous improvement. Richard joins Jade from Flexicon, a leading UK manufacturer of flexible conduit systems for use across construction and transportation sectors.

He was responsible for reducing customer service costs from half a million down to just £20,000 through building quality aligned systems and culture. “Jade is on the cusp of significant growth, and it is essential to integrate both operational and cultural systems to create a strong framework to support that growth as efficiently as possible,” said Richard Lawrence. “The company’s DNA has always been customer centric, and we will be maintaining that DNA – but ‘professionalising’ processes will be crucial to protecting margin while improving overall customer satisfaction.”
