LSF Commercial triples

Commercial aluminium systems specialist LSF Commercial has tripled its manufacturing capacity over the past 12 months, following a sustained programme of investment in its Rainham, Essex facility.

The family-run business, which fabricates aluminium windows, doors, curtain walling and shopfronts for commercial projects nationwide, has extended its factory floor, introduced a new relay production system and installed a state-of-the-art powder coating oven within a purposebuilt extension.

Director Onkar Toot said the changes reflect a long-term commitment to keeping pace with rising customer demand.

“We’ve grown steadily for years, but the scale of change in the last 12 months has been something else. Tripling our output isn’t something that happens by accident. It’s the result of careful planning, a lot of hard work from the team and a genuine willingness to keep improving how we do things.”

The introduction of a relay system has reorganised how

work moves through the factory, cutting processing times and removing bottlenecks between departments, says the company.

“Every stage now flows into the next,” Onkar said. “There’s no downtime waiting for the next part of the job to start. That change alone has made a huge difference to turnaround.”

The new powder coating oven, housed in an extension built specifically for the purpose, has added further capacity for finishing work in-house, according to the company.

“Bringing more of the process under our own roof gives us far greater control over quality and lead times,” Onkar added.

“It means when we make a promise to a customer we can keep it.”

The capacity upshift will also help with LSF’s supply of fire rated windows and doors.

Merchants expect

Click & Collect sales to grow

most branch managers (a net 62%) expected Click & Collect to increase as a share of sales. Many commented that they had recently introduced Click & Collect, and this – in combination with increasing online sales – provides substantial growth potential.

Not everyone offers Same Day Delivery, but comments suggest that merchants are recognising that customer expectations are increasing in terms of delivery times. Next Day delivery is becoming the standard and a net 29% expected Same Day delivery to increase over the next year. However, 10% expected Same Day delivery to decrease as business picks up and the branch gets busier.

Anna Eriksson of MRA Building Market Reports said: “Having run this survey over three consecutive quarters, we are seeing the number of branches offering Click & Collect increase each quarter.

Some merchants are actively pursuing the online sales channel and setting ambitious growth targets.

A nationally representative survey of 300 branch managers, undertaken by MRA Reports, shows that 67% of general builders’ merchants in the UK expect Click & Collect sales to increase at their branch over the next 12 months.

The survey forms a part of a quarterly update report on the UK builders’ merchants’ market, which provides a review of key market events, M&A activity and updated forecasts to 2030 based on new data as well as merchants’ responses to the survey.

Merchants were asked what delivery and collection options they offered to customers. Next Day Delivery is now offered

by more than 90% of general builders’ merchant branches.

Some merchants offer Next Day Delivery as their standard delivery option, while others have a standard delivery time of 3-5 days.

Over three quarters of merchants now offer Click & Collect. Same Day Delivery was offered by a lower percentage of branches; however, delivery times are often highly dependent on how busy the branch is, rather than what the customer wants. If there is capacity, delivery may take place on the same day even where it is not defined as an offer.

Asked how they thought the delivered-collected mix might change in the next 12 months,

“The fact that Same Day delivery availability depends on merchants’ workloads could be viewed as an issue. However, in reality, most merchants are highly customer oriented and will meet customers’ requirements wherever possible. Same Day delivery is often offered as an added extra, rather than a promise. There are higher expectations for weather dependent work and among DIY customers.

“While the long-term trend is towards growth in Click & Collect and faster delivery options, we are currently seeing some opposing movements that we believe to be temporary. With both fuel and material prices at historically high levels, customers are often happy to wait longer if it means avoiding delivery surcharges.” www.mra-reports.co.uk

Glazerite agrees exclusive 5-year deal with Veka

The Glazerite UK Group has agreed an exclusive new 5-year deal with Veka, further strengthening the long-term partnership between the systems company and fabricator.

The move marks a significant milestone in a relationship spanning more than 20-years, during which both businesses have grown and evolved together from Glazerite’s early years as a start-up fabricator to its position today as one of the UK’s leading window and door manufacturers.

The decision to move into a singlesource supply agreement comes as part of Glazerite’s ambitious plans for growth. This includes a major restructure of its operations, with the objective of delivering a more agile and flexible service, increased competitivity and further

Carbon emissions have also been cut as a direct result of the recycling scheme, with 2,220 tonnes of CO2 saved from being emitted into the atmosphere.

And the savings on raw material use are significant too, with the demand for virgin sand – the main raw material for glass manufacturing – cut by estimated 4,641 tonnes to date, according to the company.

through 3,000 tonne mark for recycled glass The latest recycling data from Morley Glass shows that the company has now generated more than 3,000 tonnes of cullet through the crushing of postconsumer IGUs it collects from its integral blind customers.

Morley Glass’s scheme, which pioneered the recycling of postconsumer IGUs at scale when it first launched in 2021, allows installers to divert the IGUs extracted from windows and doors during replacement projects away from landfill. In addition to helping installers save money on waste disposal costs, the scheme helps glass manufacturers reduce the need for virgin raw materials and cut energy use, as well as generate funds for charities and

community projects, says the company.

As of August 2026, Morley Glass has now produced 4,332 bags of cullet directly through the crushing of old IGUs. Approximately 1 tonne of cullet is generated from every 2 bags of cullet, but this can vary widely, which means the scheme has now surpassed the 3,000 tonne level.

The contribution this makes to energy savings for the industry is illustrated by the fact that 1 tonne of cullet saves enough energy to power an average home for 6 months. To date, the volume of cullet generated has equated to 1,674 years of energy saved for an average home, claims the

Haffner delivers machinery sales growth Machinery innovators Haffner Ltd has reported growth in machinery sales, with sales revenue increasing by 48% this year against a challenging market backdrop.

According to the company, the latest figures continue a strong growth trajectory, with machinery sales revenue now 66% higher than in 2024.

Whiteline cuts aluminium prices by absorbing surcharge

Rather than wait for market conditions to shift, Whiteline has acted to give its customers a tangible commercial advantage right now.

Window and door fabricator Whiteline Manufacturing has taken decisive action to ease cost pressures across the industry for its aluminium products.

In early July, the fabricator announced that it would absorb its aluminium surcharge in full with immediate effect, resulting in a direct reduction in prices for its customers.

The move, effective from 1st July, means that whilst supplier surcharges remain an industrywide reality, Whiteline has decided to absorb that cost internally rather than pass it on.

The result, says the company, is straightforward: lower prices, with no reduction in product quality or service levels.

The announcement comes at a time when economic uncertainty impacts cost pressures that continue to squeeze margins across the fenestration sector.

Alongside the absorption of the surcharge, Whiteline has confirmed that its aluminium lead times now stand at just three weeks, significantly ahead of the industry average of four to six weeks. Whiteline says customers can therefore expect not only better pricing, but faster turnaround without any compromise on the quality the brand is known for.

The PVCu surcharge remains under active review, with Whiteline confirming it is working to address this as its next priority.

Q2 Merchant sales down -1.2% year-on-year. Prices rise

+5.8%. Volumes fall -6.6% The latest Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) report reveals builders’ merchants’ Q2 2026 like-for-like value sales, adjusted to remove the impact of trading days, -1.2% lower than Q2 2025. Like-for-like volume sales were down -6.6%, but prices increased +5.8%.

In the 12 months July 2025 to June 2026, like-for-like value sales were down -1.5% compared to the previous 12-months (July 2024 to June 2025). Like-for-like volume sales were down -4.3% but prices increased +2.9%. With no difference in trading days, unadjusted value sales were also -1.5% lower. By unadjusted value, seven categories sold more, led by Renewables and Water Saving (+8.5%). Timber and Joinery Products grew by +1.0%, while Heavy Building Materials was weakest (-3.7%).

Mike Rigby, MD of MRA Research who produce this report, says: “Overall construction output is anaemic, as the latest ONS data reveals a +0.3% increase in Q2 output compared to Q1 but -2.0% lower than Q2 2025. Five out of the nine construction sectors grew in Q2 2026 with infrastructure new work, the strongest up, +1.9%.

“Housebuilding continues to meet significant headwinds. The

latest National House Building Council (NHBC) numbers put Q2 new home registrations down -4.0% year-on-year, with cost pressures and geopolitical uncertainty affecting house builders’ performance. The prolonged dry weather has also thrown a new issue into the mix – water. Analysis by Public First, commissioned by Water UK, shows that England only has sufficient water for 420,000 of the 1.5 million homes the government wants built during its parliamentary term.

“The appointment of Andy Burnham as Prime Minister has lifted spirits though. Alongside England’s World Cup success and months of wall-to-wall sunshine, the GfK Consumer Confidence Index is looking more optimistic, with August’s figure showing a three-point overall improvement compared to July, and a five-point increase in people’s views on the general economic situation over the coming 12 months. Better yet, there was a five-point jump in the Major Purchase Index; a good omen for residential RMI projects.”

makes Future Products’ operations virtually solar powered Composite door manufacturer and PVCu window and door fabricator, Future Products, has installed more than one thousand panels on the roof of its Nottinghamshire-based operations, as part of efforts to improve operational efficiencies and support its long-term growth strategy, according to the company.

The Liniar fabricator invested £500,000 into the installation of 1200 solar panels on its 77,000 sq. ft Mansfield facility. The array of panels is set to generate 100,000 kWh of renewable energy each month – enough to power 95% of Future Products’ operational energy requirements

– and reduce the company’s energy costs by a whopping 85%, claims the company.

With recent statistics from Make UK revealing that 90% of manufacturers have seen their energy bills increase since 2022, and over half citing energy costs as their biggest business challenge, becoming energy selfsufficient is a significant step for the fabricator in future-proofing its operations, says the company.

Jade achieves double ISO certification as it continues to grow Jade Engineering has announced it has once again achieved internationally recognised management standards, marking the culmination of a major twoyear programme of investment and creating a stronger platform for the company’s next phase of growth.

The Coventry-based machinery and tooling specialist has secured ISO 9001:2015 certification for quality management and ISO 45001:2018 certification for occupational health and safety.

Both certifications have been awarded by BSI following a rigorous independent assessment of Jade’s systems, procedures and working practices.

For Jade, the achievement represents considerably more than gaining two certificates. It represents the massive effort directors Adam Jones and Sean Mackey have poured into the

business over the last three years.

The Business Pilot Barometer Conversion strengthens as summer activity slows

August’s data paints a picture of a more selective market, with lead and sales volumes easing as the summer progressed, while conversion rates and average order values continued to strengthen. This suggests that although fewer opportunities are 40 WINDOW NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2026

entering the pipeline, installers are continuing to make good use of the enquiries they receive.

This builds on the trend highlighted in July’s Barometer, when steady sales, improving conversion rates and recovering order values pointed towards increasingly efficient sales performance. August extends that picture, with conversion reaching its highest level of the threemonth period despite a further reduction in overall activity.

Conversion rates edged up from 40.8% in July to 41.0% in August, building on June’s 39.8%.

The movement is modest, but the direction of travel remains encouraging. Conversion has now improved for two consecutive months, suggesting installers are continuing to turn a greater proportion of enquiries into confirmed work.

VIEWPOINT Lead volumes saw a more pronounced change, falling from 108.6 in July to 99.5 in August, a reduction of around 8%. This follows June’s peak of 116.1 and means enquiry volumes have now eased for two consecutive months.

Seasonality is likely to play a role, with August traditionally affected by the school holidays and households spending more time away from home.

Sales followed a similar pattern, falling from 54.1 in July to 47.8 in August, a decline of around 12%. The reduction reflects the softer flow of enquiries through the market and reinforces the importance of maintaining strong conversion performance when the number of opportunities available is more limited.

to 2.9% in July, up from 2.6% in June, with housing and household services among the main contributors to the increase. The Bank of England also held Bank Rate at 3.75% at its July meeting, reflecting continued caution around inflation and the impact of energy prices.

At the same time, there are encouraging signs around consumer sentiment. The GfK Consumer Confidence Index rose three points to -14 in August, its highest level for two years. While confidence remains in negative territory, the improvement suggests households are becoming more optimistic about their finances and the wider economy.

Average order values provide a more encouraging signal. Having recovered from £3,666 in June to £4,000 in July, they increased again to £4,094 in August. This represents a further rise of just over 2% month-on-month and suggests that customers who are committing to home improvement projects continue to invest at relatively healthy levels.

For the home improvement sector, this creates a nuanced environment. Customers remain considered in their spending decisions, but those entering the market appear willing to commit to meaningful projects. For installers, the ability to identify genuine opportunities, respond quickly and maintain effective follow-up becomes increasingly valuable when overall enquiry volumes are more variable.

Lead times increased slightly from 22.6 days in July to 23.5 days in August. They remain below June’s 24.1 days, suggesting that businesses continue to maintain relatively efficient turnaround times despite the month-to-month movement in activity.

Taken together, August’s figures highlight the growing importance of quality and conversion in the current market. Lead and sales volumes have softened through the summer, while businesses continue to convert a greater proportion of enquiries and average project values have moved higher.

The wider economic picture provides an interesting backdrop. UK CPI inflation rose

“The specification of a window or door is really important,” says Lee. “If you start off on the wrong foot, you’re going to end up in a dispute situation.”

While a mistake at the specification stage may appear relatively minor when looking at an individual property, the consequences can be significant if the mistake is repeated across a large development.

When should installers

bring in RISA? RISA are usually called in when window and door installers are already entrenched in a dispute, but by that point, what may have started as a relatively straightforward technical issue can be much harder to resolve.

Here, RISA explains how earlier intervention can help protect installers’ reputations, margins and customer relationships.

Most window and door installers do not involve RISA until they are already on the back foot – perhaps facing threatened or active legal action.

While installers can call on RISA for technical support at a much earlier stage, in practice the organisation is disproportionately brought in once a dispute has already escalated and positions have hardened.

“That isn’t always the best time to bring us in,” explains Lee Galley, inspection manager, RISA. “The earlier we can address the situation and give the consumer some confidence in what the installer is doing, the better.”

While RISA’s involvement may not

be required for straightforward domestic installations, early technical input can be invaluable on more complex projects, particularly where specification, exposure, design interfaces or contractual requirements introduce additional risk.

“We can get in at the very beginning of a project if you’ve got something really complex that’s going on,” says Dave Mechem, managing director, RISA and FENSA. “That early intervention allows us to get in there and spot those problems before they happen.”

“An example of that is a large housing association contract I visited in the Midlands a few years ago, where the survey information had missed the requirement for safety glass next to a door and that detail had then been repeated across every property,” explains Dave.

“If one piece of safety glass is missing, it’s a problem that can quite easily be fixed. But in this case, there were hundreds of houses and hundreds of units that needed to be changed.

“It got very expensive very quickly for what was, in principle, a basic specification error. On a large contract, identifying that kind of issue early can prevent it being replicated across hundreds of units,” Dave warns.

Consider the location Installers must also consider whether the products being specified are appropriate for the environment in which they will be installed.

“We can check those things up front to help installers establish whether the chosen product is capable of meeting the demands of its intended environment before it reaches site,” confirms Lee. Bridging the gap With the specialist knowledge needed to make important specification decisions often held by more than one person or organisation, RISA can also play a key role in bringing this information together.

“There is specialist knowledge that, a lot of the time, the developers themselves and the architects don’t have,” explains Lee. “There is sometimes a disconnect between the people that are actually purchasing these windows and the people that actually make those calculations about their air tightness and water resistance values, such as the systems companies, for instance. RISA sits in the middle to help link those parties together.”

Proactive, not reactive For installers, RISA should not simply be viewed as a dispute resolution service to call once matters have become entrenched. Of those who lost money, the average loss was £750, and for one in ten, that loss rose to above £5,000. On top of the financial impact, more than a third said the experience left them feeling stressed, and more

homeowners who have been left to navigate a fragmented, largely unregulated market, with little effective protection when things go wrong.

For Dave Mechem, managing director of FENSA, the report confirms what the industry has been grappling with for years – and makes the case for FENSA approved installers more clearly

Only eight percent of people who hired a trader checked whether they belonged to a professional or trade body.

Just seven percent used an approved or accredited trader scheme to find someone for the job. And a striking 36 percent relied on informal personal recommendations rather than formal verification routes.

The reality is that homeowners are searching in a market that has failed to make the right choice the easy choice.

“Homeowners are doing their best to find someone they can trust,” explains Dave. “But when formal accreditation schemes are hard to find, difficult to verify, and poorly understood, it’s no surprise that people fall back on word of mouth. The industry has a responsibility to change that.”

What the Citizens Advice report also makes clear is that accreditation does make a measurable difference – particularly when things don’t go to plan.

These are significant policy recommendations – and ones that align closely with the direction FENSA is working towards.

The infrastructure the report is calling for already exists within the glazing industry, the challenge now is making it more visible, more accessible, and better understood by the homeowners who need it most.

“The message from the report is clear,” concludes Dave. “Voluntary, fragmented protection isn’t enough.

As the changing regulatory landscape increases the importance of accurate product data, a clear audit trail, showing who was responsible for what and when, is essential.

“Good information is becoming just as important as good products,” Nigel continues. “If any questions arise later in a building’s life, companies need confidence that the right information will be available to help them answer those questions.”

Modern aluminium façade and fenestration systems are expected to meet a growing list of performance requirements. Fire safety remains a critical focus, but thermal performance, acoustics, weather resistance, security, accessibility and sustainability are also high priorities.

As products become more sophisticated, the decisions made during design, manufacture and installation are often closely interconnected. Competence, responsibility and accountability are necessary at every stage, from specification and design through to manufacture, fabrication, installation, maintenance and replacement.

“For specifiers, that could mean demonstrating a robust understanding of product performance and regulatory requirements,” explains Nigel.

“While for systems companies, it is about providing clear technical information and support…”

With traceability an essential factor of compliance, regulations place increased importance on accurate information, clear product data, technical documentation and a proper record of responsibility throughout a project’s lifecycle.

This makes training and knowledge sharing increasingly important, as Nigel explains: “The industry needs ongoing access to technical updates, best practice guidance and opportunities to share knowledge, as standards, regulations and client expectations continue to evolve,” he says.

“Keeping up with all these changes requires time and investment and this is something we are very aware of at CAB. Acting as our members’ eyes, ears and voice to help them stay informed, connected and better prepared through guidance, technical information, training, events and industry representation is a big part of what we do.”

At a time when aluminium is playing a growing role in energyefficient buildings, refurbishment projects and modern façade design, the result of CAB’s efforts is a more competent, betterinformed aluminium supply chain that is likely to deliver betterperforming buildings and stronger confidence in aluminium as a material.

“Our members are dealing with increasing technical, regulatory and commercial pressures,” says Nigel.

ODL Europe has further expanded its composite door range with the introduction of a new stable door, giving fabricators and installers access to one of the market’s most recognisable door styles, says the company.

Available in the Cottage door slab range, the new offering includes five designs: Solid, Stanley, Canning, Sandon and Benton.

Safety built in With fire doors under increasing scrutiny, Emplas is applying the same data-driven, process-led approach used across its factory to one of the industry’s most safety-critical products.

Emplas’ launch of its fully accredited 30-minute Fire Doorset is doing more than opening new opportunities in specification and refurbishment markets. It is reshaping how the business approaches design, manufacture and control across its operation, according to the company.

Tested to BS EN 1634-1, EN 1634-3 and PAS 24:2022, and independently assessed by Warrington Fire as part of BM Trada Q-Mark certification, the doorset achieved up to 58 minutes fire integrity with no failings recorded, exceeding the 30-minute requirement.

Manufactured by Emplas, the doorset combines the DoorCo 30-minute Firecore slab, Winkhaus FireFrame door profile and Winkhaus AV2 autolocking system, delivered as a fully systemised solution.

For Emplas, that system approach is critical. Fire doors are not treated as standalone products, but as integrated assemblies where every component and process must align with a defined field of application and third-party approval.

“There’s no flexibility to substitute components or deviate from the specification,” explains Bruce Rowell, head of SHEQ and technical, Emplas. “Everything has to be tested, audited and signed off as part of the system.”

The company has also invested in a dedicated fire door production line, recognising the additional weight and complexity of fire-rated products.

Emplas has aligned its Fire Stop Doors range with the Building Safety Act and the industry’s “Golden Thread” of information.

Each door is fully traceable, including component batch data, manufacturing processes and quality checks, supported by digital auditing.

“We’ve developed a digital auditing system which supports compliance right the way through from manufacture to installation and maintenance,” continues Bruce.

“That supports us, our customers and ultimately housing providers and developers to evidence compliance, meeting the requirements set out in the Building Safety Act, and critically, the ‘Golden Thread’.”

Emplas is clear that manufacturing quality alone is not enough. Installation must align with the tested system if performance is to be maintained.

Every fire door is supplied with independently tested installation and maintenance manuals,

alongside digital guidance accessed via QR code.

The company has also invested in BM Trada fire door survey, installation and maintenance training, ensuring its teams understand site requirements.

“Under law, there is no legal requirement to be trained to install fire doors,” Bruce adds.

“However, if it goes wrong, you have to be able to prove competence.”

By combining system-led design, third-party certification, process control and installation support, Emplas is moving beyond compliance, says the company.

Fuhr launches SmartAccess multiscan biometric access solution Fuhr has expanded its smart access control range with the launch of SmartAccess multiscan, a compact biometric fingerprint scanner designed to unlock Fuhr motorised multipoint locking systems securely and conveniently, according to the company.

and PVC-U doors, SmartAccess multiscan allows users to unlock their door using their fingerprint, turning the finger into a personal key that cannot be lost, forgotten or shared. All biometric data is stored locally and encrypted within the door itself. No external party can access the data, including

With a false acceptance rate of 1 in 10,000,000, the likelihood of unauthorised access is comparable to winning the lottery jackpot. By comparison, the false acceptance rate of a four-digit PIN code is 1 in 10,000, claims the company.

The system uses tested European sensor technology from ekey and can store up to 100 fingerprints.

It also adapts to gradual changes in fingerprints, including growing children’s fingers or minor fingertip injuries, helping maintain reliable day-to-day use in residential and light commercial settings, according to the company.

The discreet module is small in size and features a multicoloured LED ring to indicate status.

Covers are available in brushed stainless steel or matt black, with an IP56 protection rating when fitted with the cover. The system operates on 12–24V DC, with an integrated power buffer and no battery changes required, says the company.

When Ultion ALPS launched, it was the first cylinder to pass the updated PAS24:2022+A1:2024 standard and the Sold Secure Diamond 2024 test. At the time, no other cylinder on the market could say the same, claims the company.

The industry has moved on since then. Other manufacturers have caught up with the standard, which is exactly what should happen. Higher compliance across the board is good for everyone, including homeowners.

But at Ultion, meeting a standard has never been the finish line.

Emplas has introduced a new screw-counting system across its sash and frame lines, alongside camera-based verification on its fire door production line, as it continues to engineer out errors on the shop floor.

“Can anyone guess how many ways there are to mess

up a window in a factory environment? It’s 2,000 ways we have discovered so far, and we discover a new one every week in the factory,” said Nigel Scott, senior operations manager, Emplas.

To tackle that, Emplas has deployed an intelligent screwdriving system which counts

every fixing as it is installed, while also monitoring torque to ensure each screw is correctly seated.

“We have a really fancy, expensive screwdriver, if you like, and there are a number of them. It counts the number of screws that go into a sash or into a frame. If that hasn’t counted the right number of screws, it doesn’t allow that window to be scanned forward.”

Integrated into the company’s unique Operating System, the technology links each stage of manufacture to individual operators and defined quality checks. If something isn’t right, the product simply doesn’t move.

The Emplas Operating System adds an additional layer of safety assurance, ensuring that critical components such as hinges are fixed correctly and consistent,

Hörmann Truedor Installer Finder provides new sales opportunities for installers

The same thinking is being applied to Emplas’ Fire Doorset, where the consequences of a missed step are significantly higher.

“Intumescent strips go around the locks and sit in the letterboxes. If you miss it, it will fail. If you miss it, the fire or smoke will come through, and it will fail to do its primary job.”

To control that risk, Emplas has installed a dedicated fire door line with camera-based verification.

“Once we put all the intumescent around the product, it will pick up whether it’s present or not. If it stays green, everything’s okay.

If it’s red, you cannot move on to the next process. It won’t allow you to scan that product and dispatch it.”

The Fire Doorset has also undergone independent furnace testing at temperatures of around 960°C, significantly exceeding its FD30 requirement.

“By following the system and really building quality in, we went up to a 30-minute fire door. We achieved 58 minutes, and they stopped the test because the guys conducting it ran out of oxygen.

In collaboration with designer Molecule Design and fabricator Window Tech Trade, this property was transformed using the Residence 7 window and door system.

The renovation saw the property transformed with a total of 16 Residence 7 windows and one Residence 7 entrance door.

The front elevation features Residence 7 bay and casement windows in the colour Painswick on the exterior and Chalk White on the interior. This was completed with Georgian bars, decorative glazing beads, trickle vent covers and cills.

At the back of the property, Residence 7 casement windows

were installed in No.10 Black on the exterior and Chalk White on the interior to maintain the same flush detailing.

The installation also included a Residence 7 open-in entrance door that was half glazed, half panel in the colour Painswick.

For this renovation, all products were manufactured with Timberweld technology and fitted with double glazing, combining authentic timber-style aesthetics with the performance and lowmaintenance benefits of modern PVC-U, says the company.

Products supplies glass panels for the UK’s largest penguin enclosure Specialist Glass Products (SGP), a leading bespoke glass manufacturer based in Huddersfield, supplied 12 toughened laminated glass panels for Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s biggest investment since COVID, costing £1.2 million, says the company.

The project arose when Yorkshire Wildlife Park had the opportunity to house critically endangered African penguins and wanted to create one of the world’s largest

penguin enclosures.

The strength, clarity and performance of the glass were key considerations throughout. The glass needed to support a large, deep body of water under high pressure, and therefore required specialised manufactured glass.

Because it is a viewing area, glass clarity was a major requirement. SGP’s manufacturing processes ensure extremely clear,

uninterrupted glass with a crystalclear interlayer, which adds to the glass’s clarity, according to the company.

Cheryl Williams, director at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, comments: “People were completely amazed when they walked through the gates, and you are hit with this wall of blue. It’s such a wow factor for visitors when they come straight through the gate, and the first thing they see is these 33 meters of glass”.

The initial enquiry was for 12 large panels of 48mm thick triple-laminated glass, but as the project developed, the design changed due to an increase in water pressure. Upon review, the originally specified PVB interlayers were removed and replaced with SentryGlas, a structured rigid interlayer that gives the glass additional strength and enables it to meet the loading requirements,

The project’s timing was essential to ensure the enclosure was completed in time for peak summer season. SGP put in additional shifts at the factory and accelerated the project, managing to deliver all glass on time for the penguins’ arrival. The glass performed as expected and was delivered without issues, according to the company.

The original program to manufacture the 12 panels was three to four weeks, but as the project neared completion and the program had to be accelerated, SGP turned around all 12 panels in just over a week.

Wayne Lewis, sales manager, at SGP says: “When approached with the project, we of course said yes; this is the type of project that Specialist Glass Products excels in, the type of project that we love and that a lot of our competitors will shy away from”.

The glass was purchased in a jumbo sheet size of 6m by 3210m.

SGP then cut the glass to size and polished the edges. The project requirements also included radius corners, which were done using their CNC machine. The glass was then put through the toughening process, where it was laid flat, heated to 630C, and cooked rapidly, creating surface tension that provides additional strength.

Finally, it was laminated with the Sentryglas interlayer, again using a heat-and-pressure process, before the glass bonded itself to the three layers to create a finished product. A secondary heat-soak test was also carried out to prevent spontaneous breakage from impurities naturally present in the glass when toughened.

The final product delivered has resulted in the largest penguin enclosures in the UK, with extremely positive feedback from the public, says the company.

Regency Glass to make debut at FIT Show 2027

Regency Glass will make its first standalone appearance at FIT Show 2027, using the event to showcase its latest product innovation and connect with customers across the window, door, flat glass, hardware and roofing sectors.

While the company previously exhibited through Hegla in 2025, FIT Show 2027 will be the first time Regency has taken its own stand, giving it the opportunity to present its product range, development work and ambitions directly to the industry.

The focus will be Regency Triple featuring Corning Enlighten Glass, a thin triple-glazed solution developed to address the challenge of combining improved performance with practical installation and compatibility with existing hardware and system requirements. Regency says the product has been around 18 months in development and has undergone extensive testing to ensure its performance data is robust and commercially viable.

BBC shines spotlight on Schlegel-backed programme

inspiring future engineers Schlegel, a Quanex company and manufacturer of sealing systems for windows and doors, has been featured on BBC’s Look North for its continued support for UTC South Durham’s Industry Projects programme.

The initiative, run by the technical college and sixth form in Newton Aycliffe, gives STEM students the opportunity to work on real challenges set by regional employers while helping them develop the practical and transferable skills employers need.

Mathew said: “This has been really beneficial as I’ve learned that I enjoy the hands-on work experience and now understand this is what I want to do in my engineering apprenticeship,” while Liam said: “I have enjoyed this introduction to engineering at Quanex and doing design and prototyping work, and this is where I would like to focus my career.”

This year, Schlegel provided a live project brief for a team of students based on a real manufacturing issue from within its operations. The team spent 12 weeks researching the issue, developing a proposed solution and presenting their findings at the programme’s finale event.

For students Mathew Causer and Liam Pattison the programme has given them a focus for their future careers.

“The students first few weeks in the world of manufacturing and engineering has given them an insight into working life, how to conduct themselves in meetings and an understanding of our expectations.

“The next few months will be particularly good for the students as they have now been given real life improvement projects with timelines, gateway reviews and a full end of project presentation to the senior staff and the collage.”

For Schlegel, the benefits of the programme are already proven.

Previous students developed a solution aimed at reducing downtime at the company’s Newton Aycliffe manufacturing facility. The proposal was subsequently implemented and is now being explored for patent protection and wider rollout, says the company.

“The quality of ideas that come from these projects is always impressive and we have already seen a student-led solution deliver tangible benefits within our own operation, which demonstrates the value of bringing education and industry closer together,” added Mark.

Unique Window Systems has celebrated its fifth annual golf event with more than 100 guests from across the industry joining the business for a day of golf, networking and fundraising.

Held at Birstall Golf Club in Leicester, The Unique Invitational 2026 brought together customers, suppliers, industry friends and partners of Unique Window Systems for a day that combined friendly competition with fundraising for an important cause – Hope Against Cancer.
