gramme has included the purchase of a new Bottero 515LAMe laminated glass cutting table, delivered in July 2018 with an accompanying loading table, which gives Mackenzie Glass the capacity to handle 4.5m X 3.2m laminated sheets. “It’s not just the capacity that the Boterro gives us”, continued Mark. “It’s also the reduced heat up times – these are 90 seconds compared to 8-minutes before – which allows us to bring more flexibility to and to reduce our lead times. “We also introduced the capacity to cut fire glass in-house, which has also reduced lead times, which has proved important with the addition of Pyroguard to our offer.
Mackenzie Glass has reported growth in turnover at 20 per cent in its first full year trading under its new management team and as part of the newly created Cornwall Group. The independent glass merchant also said that it had seen a ‘Modest return to profit’, attributing growth to increased demand for laminates and the expansion of its product range, including the launch of a second line of fire-rated products. Mark Herbert, Joint Managing Director, Mackenzie Glass, said: “We started off in 2017 with a business that was turning over around £5million a year. We’ve taken that so that in June at the end of our financial year our turnover was topping £6million
ply of cut-to-size laminate and our new partnership with Pyroguard, which gives us a second leading fire rated glass range, in addition to our offer from Pilkington.” Mackenzie Glass was formed at the end of 2017 as stand-alone business and vehicle for the acquisition of Pilkington Bristol from NSG. It supplies more than 300 tonnes of glass each month. This includes a comprehensive range of products from Pilkington as a Pilkington Regional Partner, plus as an independent merchant, other float glass suppliers including Saint Gobain, Guardian, AGC and most recently, Pyroguard.

Stability The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has released its Annual Report 2019 reporting on the activity and performance of the Federation for the year ending 31st December 2018.
The report covers a year that saw the GGF gain a record 67 new members during a year of change, influence and preparation as the regulations and standards came under Government scrutiny due to the inquiry in the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy and the UK’s pending exit from the European Union. The GGF’s increased support for consumer-facing members was evident with MyGlazing.com achieving record audience numbers of over 200,000 homeowners. In addition, the report also highlighted the outstanding background work of the GGF technical team and the ongoing political activity the Federation carried out during the period. The accounts yet again showed the organisation’s formidable financial strength and stability. In June, Clearview Glaziers were one of the first fabricators to manufacture Stellar, the brand new aluminium window and door system from Epwin Window Systems. Aluprof In The UK Established in the UK in 2006, Aluprof has grown in the UK to become one of the major players in the UK facade industry. With so many active facade systems companies operating in the UK, how did Aluprof succeed in taking a sizeable portion of the UK market? Wojciech Brozyna, MD of Aluprof UK, answers some of these questions:
So why break into the UK market when it was so well-established back in 2006? “In Poland we have always viewed the UK as a challenge for us, we knew that it would not be easy to set up and gain projects from a virtually unknown system such as ours. We had the benefit of logistics behind us, as we were already exporting from Poland to several other European countries and believed we had a good grasp of product delivery, 10 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019
offering an on time and complete order fulfilment. Added to the logistics, we had won several awards for our systems in Poland and believed that our product range could take on any other system currently available in the European market at that time. “The market crash in 2008 possibly helped us grow as fast as we did in the early years as fabricators in the UK looked for alternative systems which were a little more competitively priced. At this time we were ready with stocked product in Poland and planning two deliveries per week to the UK. As a result specifications were switched to Aluprof, we delivered on our promises and these early adopters of Aluprof systems continue to be valued customers today.” How did you penetrate the UK market in the early days being
virtually unknown? “We decided to send a small team over from Poland, which included myself and several other employees who knew our systems very well. We then interviewed and took on a small team of enthusiastic people who could also see the benefits in our systems and services. It is these early members of staff who promoted our systems and helped us gain our first projects. The majority of the original staff are still vital members of our team today. “To create awareness, we joined several associations in the UK and supported their meetings and events. Our approach was quite simple, we believed that our systems could stand up alongside any other system and perform as well, if not better than our competitors. We revealed the credibility of our offer which was enthusiastically accepted in the UK by specifiers and facade companies. The UK has always had a passion for European style systems and we did not disappoint!” Motel One – Glasgow
TRADE NEWS How have you kept up with the growth of Aluprof in the UK? “When we were looking at the UK back in 2005, we decided that a central base for our office and warehouse facility would be preferential, so we decided to settle in the Manchester area which gave us close access to all the major conurbations across the British Isles. From our initial offices and warehouse in Norman Road, Altrincham, we moved seven years ago to a new, larger unit at Altrincham Business Park. “Whilst we do carry some stock material in our Altrincham warehouse, most projects are supplied direct from our huge warehouse facility located in Bielsko-Biała. With just a two day shipping window, we continue to supply complete orders across to the UK on a weekly basis.” “In order to keep up with the growth and support our customers, four years ago we started to offer fabricated product as well as systems. This has gone down very well with our customers, as it has allowed them to take on larger projects and at the same time eased their own fabrication programming.” How have you persuaded specifiers to use your range of systems? “We have done little advertising and have relied on word of mouth and regular presence in the press by way of PR and editorial promoting our constantly growing portfolio of projects, however, the growth would not have been possible without our dedicated, customer facing, technical and procurement teams. With their extensive knowledge of the UK industry we communicated our strengths and most importantly, met our promises of support and delivery times. We also have an experienced back office team and R&D facility in Poland who offer a package of technical sup-
port. Honouring site deliveries with our fabricators has put us in place for future work on many projects and something we have capitalised on. “One of the growth systems in our portfolio has been our fire rated windows, doors and curtain wall systems. When we brought these systems to the UK, the market for fire rated aluminium systems was in its early growth cycle. By introducing these systems to specifiers, where there was a project requirement, has enabled us to range build with our other non-fire rated systems which offer a perfect match keeping the all important glazing sight-lines. I believe we still lead the field in this technology as currently we are the only systems company in the UK that can offer a cap-less fire rated curtain wall system, our MB SR50NEI EFEKT which is tested to EI60 and certified by Certifire warrington. What are your future plans for the UK “We have plans to double the offices and warehouse space this year in Altrincham to provide a showroom and media centre for specifiers. Together with this facility we also have an active office and ‘drop-in’ showroom at the Business Design Centre at Islington to support our growing number of specifiers using our systems in the South East. We also regularly interview for new staff as we continue to expand our team. New systems are also in the pipeline, some dedicated to the UK, but you will have to keep an eye out in the media for the launch of these new systems and services. I would say that we continue plan for future growth and strengthen our position as a strong, reliable supplier despite the UK being in uncertain times. www.aluprof.co.uk

New ‘Ambassador’ Workshops Reveal The Garnalex Way Garnalex has announced a December start date for its first fabricator and installer ‘Ambassador’ Workshops. The company claims the new Garnalex aluminium window and door systems are significantly different from previous and current generations of aluminium systems in the way they are fabricated, installed and sold. Attendance at one of the workshops is an opportunity for 14 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019
fabricators and installers to hear about the Garnalex Way, have a tour of the new state-of-the-art Garnalex factory, and be one of the first fabricators and installers in their area to sell Garnalex. Attendees will learn more about the £9m (to date) investment in the factory and, says Garnalex, learn how Garnalex’ advanced window and door systems will transform the market for aluminium residential windows and
doors. Further investment is planned. The factory will start extruding aluminium profiles for trade customers this October and its own product range later in the year. According to the company, Garnalex will be one of only two or three UK-owned systems companies that extrudes its own aluminium, and the only one that makes its own complementary plastic components. When Nick Bailey was appointed to the role of Business Development Manager at Business Micros recently, he probably wasn’t expecting one of his first presentations to be at Dalton Barracks near Abingdon addressing a room full of senior army personnel.
But that’s exactly what happened when he was invited to speak at 4 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps’ Leadership Day and give an insight into how civilian organisations like Business Micros develop their staff.
Nick was one of the few speakers at the event not from a military background, so his perspective on managing and empowering staff was particularly well received. He spoke about the supportive culture at Business Micros and the emphasis placed on empowering staff and encouraging self-management of time and responsibilities. He said: “We take a very different approach to leadership than they do in the army, but I think we work just as hard to identify and develop our talent. We also offer huge amounts of support and encouragement which translates into a high calibre team and long-term retention of valuable staff. “The feedback from the army personnel who attended was very positive and I found the experience useful, learning from the other presentations which were focused on mentorship and understanding generation Z.”

Ironmongery By Well-known fabricator Roseview Windows has more than doubled the capacity of its Incarnation secondary glazing brand, by expanding into a new factory. Previously Incarnation operated from 2,500ft2, but now half of a new 11,000ft2 facility has been dedicated to manufacturing aluminium secondary glazing. The company has also invested more than £100,000 in new machinery and tooling, helping to meet rapidly growing demand. Paul Bygrave, director at Roseview Windows comments: “We started manufacturing secondary glazing seven years ago, largely as a service for our sash window customers. The idea was that we could help them win business on heritage projects where replacement windows weren’t permitted. “Since then interest in the heritage market, and thus demand for secondary glazing, has grown enormously. We were struggling to cope in our previous space so we took the decision to take things to the next level. “Secondary glazing is a traditional
product that hasn’t changed much in the last 40 years. Only a handful of companies made it, which has sometimes been reflected in poor customer service and lead times. Through this expansion we’re able to bring the Roseview philosophy to a product area that had gone a little stale, manufacturing high quality heritage products for trade and commercial customers, backed up by excellent service and technical backup.” The other half of the facility close to Roseview’s Buckinghamshire base has been set aside for new developments coming in 2020. The glazing industry is now being represented on the Building Regulations Advisory Committee (BRAC) which advises the Secretary of State in England on making Building Regulations and setting standards for building design and construction. This is welcome news given the upheaval around Building Regulations since the Grenfell Tower tragedy and the overall state of the construction industry. Drawn by the prospect of the jobs and sustainable production VEKA Recycling Ltd is bringing to Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, local politicians made a visit to the company’s new headquarters to learn more about one of the area’s newest employers.
The town’s Member of Parliament Peter Bone, accompanied by Northamptonshire County Councillor Gill Mercer, visited VEKA Recycling’s new site, which was established on the town’s Finedon Road Industrial Estate early in 2019. During the visit they learned how the plant is to become the most advanced of its type in Europe when it comes fully on stream next year. Simon Scholes, VEKA Recycling’s Managing Director, who found the site and is responsible for its development, showed the politicians how old PVC-U window and doorframes together with virgin offcuts, are re-processed at the plant and recycled into new products, including new window frames. Whilst currently operational with a process that reduces frames and other component materials into reusable polymer for a wide range of uses, some refinement of materials
continues to be dealt with by VEKA Recycling’s other plants in Germany and France. By the end of the year the plant will significantly add to the processing capacity of VEKA Recycling Group, Europe’s largest PVC window recycler, which is already in excess of 60,000 tonnes annually, representing more than 3.5 million windows. With an investment expected to exceed £10 million when completed, the Wellingborough factory will be self-sufficient by the middle of next year. Simon explained that Wellingborough was chosen for its central location, telling the visitors that the site “fits the bill perfectly.” With 60 people employed currently, more jobs will be created when VEKA Recycling goes fully on line. The MP, a Conservative and dedicated Brexiteer, was delighted to hear that VEKA Recycling’s German owners were committed to investment in the UK, irrespective of the outcome of Brexit, commenting “I actually think that these Brexit problems are non-existent.” veka-recycling.co.uk

Of The Fence Dean Peake-Whitehurst is the newest member of staff to feature in Business Micros’ 40th anniversary campaign celebrating some of the lesser known faces who have contributed so much to its success. Dean is a Technician based at Business Micros’ Newton-Le-Willows sales and installation office. He only joined the company in 2017 but has already impressed customers with his knowledge and expertise, even bagging a nomination for the Young Person of the Year award at the National Fenestration Awards. That’s hardly surprising, given that Dean spent the first five years of his career as a window fabricator himself, using the Business Micros Evolution and EvoNET software every day. Now that he’s on the other side of the fence though, Dean says his insight into the realities of fabrication mean that he can understand the issues that customers face and can talk their language in helping to resolve them. Most days, Dean’s role is a mix of onsite and remote work for both new and existing customers. He is involved in installing and implementing new software and helping customers with updates and changes. He explains: “I see my role as delivering on sales promises, making sure that the software does what customers need it to do to maximise their efficiency. They want to see real payback from their investment, and I work hard to make sure that they achieve that.” Dean’s expertise is across Business Micros’ Evolution, EvoNET, EvoSatellite and EvoCite products and he has worked with the likes of Sliders UK, A Plus, Sierra Windows and Phoenix Doors. Increasingly, he is

After two years with Business Micros, Dean says he is enjoying being immersed in the software world while staying close to his fabrication roots. Harriet Adams has now been with VBH for a little over a year. As a newcomer to the industry, Harriet underwent a thorough induction period shadowing Regional Sales Manager for the South, Dan Powell. With a third of a million people needing urgent action for their properties to become more accessible and Part M requiring all new builds to be accessible, the industry has more opportunities to fit suitable entrance and double doors. Doors are such a big part of accessibility for homes, and to help combat this, Building Regulations Approved Document Part M offers guidance on new builds, stating that new dwellings need to be more accessible and adapted should they need to be. Donâ€™t just think of entrance doors for accessibility, wider doors such as bifold and patio doors require larger accesses and low thresholds too, helping people with limited mobility move in and out of their properties. Mighton has been officially presented with a certificate from the British Standards Institution (BSI) in recognition of achieving the Government’s Code of Practice for consumer Internet of Things (IoT) security for its Avia Apple HomeKit smart lock – the first ever product of any kind to receive the ETSI TS 103 645 accreditation says the company. The Code of Practice, which is recognised internationally, was introduced by the UK Government in October 2018, in response to growing concern about the cyber security of smart enabled devices in the home. Warm edge spacer bar supplier SWISSPACER is developing its range of solutions for glass in the UK with the addition of the exclusive La Pensilina premium glass canopy. Present were members representing powder coat manufacturers, pretreatment systems suppliers and powder coat applicators, with the meeting chaired by Alan Maginnis of Sprint Coatings. The meeting begun with an overview of potential new applicators wishing to join the association of which two were close to being approved and two further applicators were yet to have initial inspections. The QUALICOAT UK & Ireland association can only approve membership and award a QUALICOAT licence once the applicant can prove that their equipment, procedures and quality of finishing meets the latest, sixteenth edition of the QUALICOAT standard. The association also wishes to make it very clear that they welcome any company operating in the architectural powder coating sector to apply for membership of the 48 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019
UK & Ireland association which is part of the global QUALICOAT association based in Zurich. An update was offered on the use of hexavalent chrome as a pretreatment system. Whilst QUALICOAT is committed to the move to chrome free alternatives for pretreatment, there is no further deadline set at the moment by the ECHA to ban its use in the architectural coatings industry. It is noted however that when new pretreatment plants are being installed, they are being set up as chrome free systems as there are less effluent issues to deal with. Some 69% of global powder coaters have moved to chrome-free alternatives for their aluminium pretreatment prior to powder coating of profiles. Training remains high on the agenda for powder coaters laboratory personnel. Laboratories regularly inspect and test on-going powder coating production and it is this crucial part of the operation of a powder coat applicator, which maintains their licence as a QUALICOAT approved applicator. The next laboratory training programme is to be held at the AluK powder coating plant in Chepstow at the beginning of October. Training is mandatory for all applicators at least every two years. More information is available on the QUALICOAT UK & Ireland website. The new regulations covering the surface spread of flame for dwellings which are above 18m in height was discussed. It was agreed that all powder coatings will meet the minimum classification of, A2, s1,d0 for surface spread of flame and this is something that will likely form part of the QUALICOAT specification in the foreseeable future. Always changing and developing, QUALICOAT has announced that an international working group has been set up to look at developing an even tighter specification for QUALICOAT which will further enhance the life expectancy of architectural coatings. In business as an aluminium window and sliding door fabricator and installer for just three years, volumes had grown quickly for North East Bifolds Ltd, based at Seaham, near Sunderland and the owners decided to invest in a CNC machining centre. However, having made the decision to purchase such a machine from one supplier, directors Tony Meah and Chris Craggs switched to a Kombimatec AMC308 after seeing one in action at a business associate’s factory and examining the high quality offered in that firm’s products. “We work with TSA Aluminium on various projects from time to time,” explained Tony Meah, “and just before we placed an order for a CNC machining
centre with another company, we happened to see the Kombimatec machine at TSA in operation. The efficiency, ease of operation and the quality of the work it produces made us completely rethink our choice, and we called Kombimatec.” When Kombimatec MD David Parsons took the enquiry he insisted upon fully evaluating North East Bifolds’ needs before taking an order: “David is very clued up and helpful,” said Tony “and wanted to assess our needs to make sure that the machine was right for us. As it happens, it has been the perfect choice with the results proving themselves in the increase in output and quality. In fact,” added Tony, ”we have been so pleased with the CNC machine and the way that Kombimatec has looked after
us, we have now bought one of the company’s double mitre saws.” The Kombimatec kit installed at North East Bifolds is the company’s AMC308 Automatic CNC Machining Centre, which has been developed for both aluminium and PVC-U profiles. It automatically performs all drilling, routing, slotting, tapping and milling functions via a sophisticated control system and intuitive touch screen interface and includes electronic variable speed control and 4 adjustable pneumatic clamps. The installation is fully enclosed for safety and noise reduction. North East Bifolds also upgraded their machine to include an automatic tool change cabinet to further increase efficiency. The Compound Double Mitre Saw subsequently purchased, is the Kombimatec DGS570, which also uses advanced control software and fully complements the machining centre. North East Bifolds Ltd began life after Tony’s housebuilding firm consistently experienced poor deliveries and product quality from its window and door suppliers: “Builders need windows and doors on time and in full, and we were let down so often that Chris and I decided to set up and make our own,” said Tony. “Our commitment to supplying builders when we say we will do it, has really worked for us to the point where we needed to invest in the Kombimatec to step up output and maintain and even improve quality. Business has grown rapidly making and installing Schuco doors, especially in high-end homes, together with Smart windows and doors. Safety For Prestigious Profile 22’ Optima sculptured windows were specified and commissioned for 39 new build homes in Snedshill, Telford for private rent. The window specification was for a RAL 7016 Grey on White sculptured profile that could achieve an overall U value of 1.4 W/m2K. Secured by Design accreditation was a requirement as was PAS24 / Part Q compliance. The site’s location near a busy road meant acoustic glazing was required on some elevations. Trickle vents were required on some windows, including those with acoustic glazing requirements, which meant non-standard acoustic trickle vents were required. Other windows required astragal bars, which needed to be glazed and heat wrapped before leaving the factory. The project’s main contractor, Lovell Partnerships, awarded the window contract to Profile 22 Approved Window Contractor Select Windows. Select operates nationwide in the refurbishment and new build construction markets. It has worked with Lovell Partnerships regularly and has built up a reputation as a contractor to be trusted, a factor that played an important part in winning the tender.
Select tendered for the contract with Profile 22’s Optima Sculptured Window because it more than met the requirements of the project. The Optima system delivers a 1.2 W/m2K U-value as standard, with U-values as low as 0.8 W/m2K possible. Optima windows achieve PAS24 2016 Enhanced Security and have Secured by Design options when these are required, as they were in this case. The high specification of the glazing configuration and the requirement for windows with astragal bars to be glazed at the factory added an extra level of challenge to the project. Fabrication and installation of the windows was completed smoothly and on schedule thanks to Select’s experience in working cooperatively and proactively to demanding timescales. The completed homes are an excellent addition to Telford’s housing stock. To Surrey New-Build An eye-catching residential home, ‘The Cedar Views,’ has been built on the south-western fringes of Woking, adjacent to The Strawberry Tree – a popular period property in the area.
Because of its proximity to Strawberry Tree, it was a requirement that products installed at The Cedar Views be in-keeping with the nearby property’s traditional features. This included the windows, which needed to provide period aesthetic appeal while also providing the convenience and quality of new, modern products. REHAU could offer such a solution. Designed by Ryder Architecture and built by main contractor Balfour Beatty, the new Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, created in the city’s leafy Bellahouston Park, is the first hospice in the UK to follow the Sengetun model of care, which has “placemaking” at the centre of its approach. Its innovative, stateof-the-art Scandinavian design puts patients and families first, with the provision of space for privacy, dignity and compassionate care for all ages. It is based on research that shows the aesthetic design of a healthcare facility has a measurable impact on patients’ wellbeing.
The new building’s location in Bellahouston Park helps to ensures all senses contribute to enhancing patient care, including sunlight, warmth and the landscape, which support the functions of the building, and create a feeling of home. For this reason, the design of the windows and doors allows for maximum natural daylighting and uncluttered views, with the brief being for high performance aluminium fenestration throughout. CMS Window Systems, based near Glasgow at Castlecary and a long term supporter of the hospice’s ‘Brick by Brick’ fundraising campaign, was awarded the circa £0.5m glazing contract in a competitive tender, with the specification built around a combination of Metal Technology systems. It was a project that encompassed around 500m2 of Metal Technology System 17 curtain walling and Metal Technology 5-20 / 7-20 doors. All aluminium profiles, flashings and
fixing brackets were finished in RAL 1035 (pearl beige). Glass and aluminium specialist Cube Glass has increased its presence in the important UK stadium market with a major contract at Rangers Football Club’s state-of-the-art Hummel Training Centre. The stadium arena and sports venue business has mushroomed in importance in recent years as owners and operators continue to drive awareness and maximise non-match day revenues. The 38-acre Hummel Training Centre at Auchenhowie in the north of Glasgow, formerly Murray Park, was opened in 2001 at a cost of £14 million. Hummel,
the Danish sportswear company, is Rangers’ kit supplier. Working in association with Morris & Spottiswood, Cumbernauld-based Cube Glass installed three fire-rated Schueco screens and new double doors at the training centre, which hosts manager Steve Gerrard, his staff and the first team squad. The company also refurbished the professional player entrance and fitted a new entrance for the Academy within the main building. The contract follows major works which it carried out at Rangers’ home ground, Ibrox Stadium.

Announced As Finalist In Major Awards Programme Pilkington United Kingdom Limited, part of the NSG Group, has been listed as a finalist for Commercial Project of the Year in the G19 Awards for its installation at Slimming Word’s HQ. The installation, recognised by the glazing industry awards programme, was part of an £8.5 million renovation scheme at the weight loss organisation’s Derbyshire workspace. Pilkington UK supplied low-emissivity and solar control glass to help the building stay warm in the winter and cooler in the summer, reducing the need for mechanical heating and cooling – while still allowing for maximum natural light transmittance. The shortlisting follows the glass giant winning the category last year for its project at 6 St Andrew Square in Edinburgh.
