In this worldwide pandemic we’ve lost things. Like jobs, homes, belongings, wealth and worth. It’s depleted us.

And the physical separations have widened. Ground that faceless texts, dropped calls, and formal Zoom videos can’t narrow.

But our biggest casualty?

Our connections.

We’ve lost what we do when we’re together. The meetups. The drop-bys. The hang-outs. How we used to laugh in chorus, listen in harmony and simultaneously talk and everyone was heard. We don’t sit and talk for hours, share secrets about daily struggles or get to know more of ourselves because of that familiar face we’re with. We miss each other.

We need what happens Between Friends.

I’ve found in this cosmic closing of our world that friendships, the really good ones, are resilient. They’re kind of like quilts. The time and effort spent making them wasn’t wasted. They can be put away for a season but picked right back up where we left them, even if a little more worn, still giving cheer and comfort.

Some even turn out to be our most cherished.

This fabric collection, Between Friends, is about the friendships that still flourish. The heart-warming ones that bind us despite our present circumstances. I’ve included telephones as a symbol of talking for hours as I’ve done so many times, particularly with one of my friends, Margaret. The text fabric even includes bits and pieces of our messages to each other.

So, where do we go from here? What’s next? Can I suggest making quilts for your best of friends?

Remind yourself of what you haven’t lost. Let them know you’ve missed the “us”, that special “we”, in what happens Between Friends. ~Shannon
