Welcome to our final concert of the Missoula Symphony and Chorale’s 2023-2024 season.

It is a thrill to present Jerry Herman: The Broadway Legacy Concert and to welcome veteran Broadway performers Kelli Rabke, Jason Graae, Debbie Gravitte, and Ron Raines, our guest artists this weekend. This will be our third annual Broadway concert, thanks to the sponsorship and vision of the Tremper Family who dedicate this concert to the memory of their parents Barbara and William Tremper. What a gift to our community that this new tradition continues.

While the 2023-2024 concert season is coming to an end, the Missoula Symphony Association staff and board won’t rest for long. The second annual Speakeasy Symphony is coming up Friday, June 7th. The MSA’s perennial board member and past president Jim Valeo has dubbed it The Event of the Year. If you were there last year, you would certainly agree. Last year’s event took attendees through a speakeasy door (password required) into a world of the 1920’s, replete with flappers and gangsters, live jazz by River City Swing, cocktails, and dancing. Welcome to the culmination of a magnificent week of music and storytelling as the Missoula Symphony Association presents Jerry Herman: The Broadway Legacy Concert . This special event, produced and made possible through the generous support of The ASCAP Foundation and Spot-On Entertainment, stands as a high point of our season.

As one of only four cities fortunate enough to host this prestigious concert annually, the Missoula Symphony is honored to bring you these concerts filled with some of the most beloved tunes from Broadway’s golden era.

Jerry Herman’s compositions have captured the essence of Broadway’s magical allure, crafting narratives that resonate with audiences around the world. This weekend, we are privileged to celebrate his enduring legacy with two performances featuring a cast of New York’s finest Broadway and concert talents, handpicked by Jerry Herman himself. We are delighted to welcome Jason Graae, Debbie Gravitte, Kelli Rabke, and Ron Raines—each a star in their own right, coming together to illuminate the stage with some of the most enchanting songs in musical theatre history.

From the iconic Hello, Dolly! to the spirited Mame , to my personal favorite Mack & Mabel , and the poignant La Cage aux Folles , our exceptional cast will bring these classics to life. Their extraordinary voices and dynamic performances promise to create an evening and afternoon of splendid entertainment and heartfelt tribute to one of Broadway’s legendary composers.

Special thanks to Michael Kerker, Director of Musical Theatre for ASCAP and Associate Producer of these concerts. Michael and I have been trying to coordinate artist schedules, company calendars, and performance venue dates since Ron Raines first introduced us in 2019. I’m grateful that, at long last, we’re able to make this extraordinary collaboration come to life in Missoula.

JASON GRAAE

Jason Graae has been featured on Broadway in “A Grand Night For Singing”, “Falsettos”, “Stardust”, “Snoopy!”, “Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?”. Off- Broadway shows include the original casts of “Forever Plaid”, “Olympus on My Mind”, “All in the Timing”, “Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh” (Drama Desk Nomination- Best Actor in a Musical) and many more. Jason recently traveled across the U.S. for a year and a 1/2 as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the National Tour of “Wicked.”

Jason made his Metropolitan Opera House debut as the male vocalist in Twyla Tharp’s “Everlast” with American Ballet Theatre. Jason has performed his one man show all over the country, winning 4 Bistro Awards and a N.Y Nightlife Award, also making TimeOut NY’s Top 10 Cabaret shows of the year. His critically acclaimed show with Faith Prince, “The Prince and the Showboy” played at 54 Below and the pair won a 2nd Nightlife Award and a Robby Award for Best Duo.

In Los Angeles, Jason won the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award for outstanding achievement in musical theatre. Jason originated the role of Houdini in the L.A. production of “Ragtime” at the Shubert Theatre and won an Ovation Award for “Forbidden Broadway Y2KLA!”. At the Hollywood Bowl, he played Benny in “Guys and Dolls’” and Marcellus in “The Music Man”. For 3 years, he starred as Scrooge in the world premiere of “Scrooge in Love”in San Francisco, winning the Theatre Bay Area Award for Best Actor in a Musical.

On television, Jason has appeared on many shows including “Six Feet Under”, “Rude Awakening”, “Friends”, “Frasier”, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”, “Living Single”, “Caroline in the City”, “Providence”, etc. On PBS, he was a guest soloist twice with the Boston Pops, as well as with Marvin Hamlisch and the National Symphony in “Holiday for the Troops at The Kennedy Center” and in the Jerry Herman documentary “Words and Music by Jerry Herman”.

Movie appearances include the title role in “Sunshine Barry and the Disco Worms” (2008 Toronto and London Film Festivals), Disney’s “Home on the Range”, “On Edge”, “Gepetto”, “The Dukes of Hazzard in Hollywood”, and “Awakening of Spring” . He has been heard on many cartoons and for 5 and 1/2 years was the voice of “Lucky, the Leprechaun” for Lucky Charms Cereal, a balanced part of your complete breakfast.

He made his Los Angeles Opera debut as “Njegus” in “The Merry Widow”, repeating the role with Dallas , New Orleans, Houston Grand Opera, and Michigan Opera Theatre (Oscar Wilde Award nomination). Also with L.A. Opera he was featured as “Offenbach” in “The Grand Duchess” , directed by Garry Marshall. He has played “Frosch” in “Die Fledermaus” with the Washington National and San Francisco Operas, the Manhattan School of Music, and most recently with Houston Grand Opera.

Jason has recorded over 65 CDs, including original cast albums, concerts, compilations, and his 3 solo CDs, “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile - Jason Graae Sings Charles Strouse”, and “Jason Graae LIVE at The Cinegrill” (Fynsworth Alley), and “Perfect Hermany-the songs of Jerry Herman.”

One of Broadway’s biggest personalities, Debbie received the Tony Award for her critically acclaimed performance in JEROME ROBBINS BROADWAY, along with the New York Showstopper Award, Grammy Award and a Drama Desk Award nomination. She made her Broadway debut in the original cast of THEY’RE PLAYING OUR SONG, and went on to appear in: BLUES IN THE NIGHT, PERFECTLY FRANK,(Drama Desk Award Nomination)ZORBA, AIN’T BROADWAY GRAND?, CHICAGO and LES MISERABLES. Debbie appeared in London in Jerry Herman’s MACK AND MABEL at the Drury Lane Theatre. She’s also been seen in the West Coast Premiere of THE GOODBYE GIRL, LOVE LIFE (in Philadelphia), FIDDLER ON THE ROOF with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, along with the ENCORES productions of THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE, TENDERLOIN, and CARNIVAL at New York’s CITY CENTER. Debbie has performed her nightclub act worldwide, from New York’s RAINBOW AND STARS, BIRDLAND, 54 BELOW, to London’s PIZZA ON THE PARK. RON RAINES (vocalist)

A Tony Award nominee for the acclaimed production of Follies, Ron has had an illustrious international career spanning musical theater, opera, concert, and television. Born and raised in Texas, Ron Raines attended Oklahoma City University and The Juilliard School. He was a three-time Emmy and Soap Opera Digest Award nominee for his role as villain Alan Spaulding on CBS’s longest running daytime drama Guiding Light. Ron has appeared on Elementary and Person Of Interest. He starred on Broadway in Annie, Newsies, Chicago and Show Boat, and originated the role of Nick Longworth in Teddy and Alice with Len Cariou. He has delighted audiences around the world with his memorable starring roles in virtually every major American musical and operetta, including A Little Night Music, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, South Pacific, Annie, Kismet, Sayonara, Kiss Me Kate, The King and I, Naughty Marietta, The Merry Widow, Brigadoon, Rose Marie, Oklahoma!, Carousel, Side by Side by Sondheim, Guys and Dolls, and Man of La Mancha at the Covent Garden Festival. He has soloed with over 50 major American and international orchestras, including the Boston Pops, the Philly Pops, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony, and the Israel Philharmonic, and has performed at Carnegie Hall, the 92nd Street Y, Tanglewood, the London Palladium, Rainbow and Stars, and Royal Festival Hall. KELLI RABKE (vocalist)

Kelli was handpicked by Andrew Lloyd Webber to make her Broadway debut as the “Narrator” in the revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (US Cast Recording). Last summer, she reprised that role to much acclaim at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. Also on Broadway, she played “Eponine” in Les Miserables . She has performed in regional theaters throughout the country, most notably as “Yonah” in the American Premiere of Stephen Schwartz’s Children of Eden (American Premiere Recording) at the Paper Mill Playhouse, where she also got her “big break” as Dorothy in their landmark production of The Wizard of Oz . Other favorites include “Mabel” in Mack & Mabel at Barrington Stage Co, and “Christine” in “Phantom”(Kopit/Yeston) at Pittsburgh CLO. Recent highlights include the Emmy nominated PBS American Songbook segment Stephen Schwartz and Friends , featuring the composer himself at the piano, and featured soloist on the Grammy nominated album, Sondheim Unplugged. After leaving the bright lights of the stage to start a family, she is now a staple in the concert world, performing with symphony orchestras across the country and creating her own cabaret shows, including the critically acclaimed Tiny Giants - Petite Powerhouses from Garland to Gaga . JOHN FISCHER (Pianist)

John is a music director, pianist, vocal coach and teacher with decades of experience working with top Broadway and cabaret artists, including Tony winners Ali Stroker, Alice Ripley, Tony nominee Emily Skinner, and many more. He music directed BROADWAY’S RISING STARS at The Town Hall for 14 seasons, where he also worked on numerous BROADWAY ORIGINALS concerts. He spent 7 seasons as music director for the highly acclaimed musical theater program at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in the Berkshires, and his last season saw him working hand in hand with Stephen Schwartz and Chet Walker on the creation of a new ballet, The Boy on the Roof . In recent years, John has joined the symphony world as a guest artist, debuting a new Bacharach show with the Plymouth Symphony, Blockbuster Broadway for the Omaha Symphony, a Bernstein/Robbins celebration with the Signature Symphony, and Music of the Knights with the Santa Ana Symphony Orchestra. In NYC, he is a regular fixture at 54 Below, music directing everything from Sinatra to Streisand, and as the MD for the long-running series, Sondheim Unplugged. Recent highlights include Ali Stroker’s sold out AMERICAN SONGBOOK concert at Lincoln Center, Alice & Emily’s UNATTACHED at 54 Below, and the 25th Anniversary Concert of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, part of the award winning 54 SINGS series for which he also music directed APPLAUSE, MACK & MABEL, and KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN. He currently teaches at Singnasium, ApplauseNY, and also does private coaching. He has been on staff at AMDA, HB Studios, The New School, the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute, and the Growing Studio.

MICHAEL A. KERKER (Associate Producer)

Michael A. Kerker has been Director of Musical Theatre for ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) since 1990. In addition to coordinating ASCAP’s Musical Theatre Workshop in New York, he works with DreamWorks Theatricals to produce the ASCAP/ DreamWorks Musical Theatre Workshop in Los Angeles, (both of which are led by composer/ lyricist Stephen Schwartz). Together with Michael Feinstein, he produces a regular series of concerts at Carnegie Hall highlighting the catalogue of both legendary and contemporary songwriters.

Michael is also producing a regular series of interview programs entitled “Broadway: Up Close and Personal” for the Kennedy Center. Michael’s onstage conversations with some of our nation’s most prominent songwriters have included evenings with Jerry Herman, Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Charles Strouse, Sheldon Harnick, Marvin Hamlisch, and Stephen Schwartz.

Michael produced the ASCAP Foundation Jerry Herman Legacy Program, which is a series of seminars, master classes and concerts featuring the legendary composer/lyricist.  The program has been presented nationwide in such cities as Chicago, Sundance, San Francisco, Phoenix, Savannah, Miami and Pittsburgh.

Michael is proud to be a member of the Boards of the Actors Fund and the Johnny Mercer Foundation.

I have been so blessed to be able to spend my creative life in the theatre and to give musical voice to such wonderful characters as Dolly Levi (Hello, Dolly!); Georges and Albin (La Cage Aux Folles); and Mame Dennis (Mame). I always wrote for specific characters and specific situations. To know that my songs could also have a life outside of their respective shows was always a welcoming surprise to me.

When The ASCAP Foundation approached me about presenting a new program consisting of nationwide concerts featuring my songs with symphony orchestras and a series of master classes targeting university/college students in writing and performing for the musical theatre I was thrilled. And I couldn’t have asked for a more sterling cast to sing my songs. They are some of Broadway’s most acclaimed talents: Debbie Gravitte, Ron Raines, Jason Graae, Klea Blackhurst and Scott Coulter.

I am delighted to have them representing my musical legacy and bringing my songs to you this evening. Clearly, for me, the “Best of Times is Now.”

Jerry Herman’s love affair with musical theatre began as a very young child when his parents took him to see Irving Berlin’s Annie get your Gun. Jerry was so engaged by the musical’s score that when he returned home from the theatre he went straight to the piano and was able to play some of the songs from the show.

Knowing that he wanted to be a songwriter, Jerry Herman could not have asked for a better master teacher than Irving Berlin. Mr. Berlin’s influence is clearly evident when you listen to the songs of Jerry Herman. Like Mr. Berlin, Jerry’s songs couple deeply heartfelt lyrics with gorgeous strong melodies. They go straight to the listener’s ear with a heft of emotion and sincerity. This accounts for the love affair that audiences have with the music and lyrics of Jerry Herman.

This evening’s concert features many of those Jerry Herman classics that are certain to have you beaming with the recognition of meeting an old friend. These will be the songs from his biggest hit musicals: Hello, Dolly!; Mame; and La Cage Aux Folles. We also wanted to possibly introduce you to a few songs from musicals you may not have seen: Dear World; Milk and Honey; Mack and Mabel; and The Grand Tour.

All these shows represent the golden legacy that account for the durability and timeless quality of Jerry’s enormous catalogue of songs. These shows and songs have earned Jerry virtually every award imaginable: Tonys’ Grammys; the Richard Rodgers Award; the Johnny Mercer Award; the Oscar Hammerstein Award; and the richly deserved Kennedy Center Honors.

I have known Jerry Herman for over 30 years. I can tell you for a fact that the joy and love that is in his musical legacy is also in the man himself. His musical genius and his stature as one of the most beloved Broadway icons is what we are celebrating this evening!

Praised by the Seattle Times as “poised yet passionate,” Julia Tai is one of today’s most dynamic and engaging conductors on the international stage. In November 2020, she became the first female music director in the Missoula Symphony Orchestra’s history. Her career has led to acclaimed performances and rehearsals with the American Youth Symphony, Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic (Czech Republic), Boise Philharmonic, Brandenburger Symphoniker (Germany), Estonian National Youth Symphony (Estonia), Lexington Philharmonic, New Symphony Orchestra (Bulgaria), Orquesta Filarmónica de la UNAM (Mexico), Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil Charlos Chávez (Mexico), Philharmonia Northwest, and the Seattle Symphony.

Ms. Tai has established a reputation for her creative programming and community partnerships. She has increased the esteem of her orchestras by elevating its artistic output, commissioning new works by renowned composers, and serving diverse communities. In 2017, in collaboration with Finlandia Foundation, she celebrated Finland’s centennial by presenting Finland 100 at Benaroya Hall, featuring three generations of Finnish composers. The concert was attended by Finland’s ambassador to the U.S. from Washington D.C. In 2018, she presented an all-Taiwanese composers’ concert again at Benaroya Hall, featuring musicians from all over the U.S., Canada, and Taiwan. Her orchestras have co-commissioned new works by PDQ Bach (Concerto for Simply Grand Piano and Orchestra), Mexican composer Osvaldo Mendoza (Three Mexican Portraits), Chinese-American composer Dorothy Chang (Gateways – Concerto for Erhu and Piano), Vivian Fung (Trumpet Concerto), Sheila Silver (Being in Life – Concerto for French horn and Alpenhorn, 5 Tibetan singing bowls, and string orchestra), and have premiered new works by Orlando Jacinto Garcia, Donald O. Johnston, Pascal Le Boeuf, Kate Soper, Andrew Waggoner, and Wang Lu.

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Ms. Tai began her violin studies at age four and piano at eight. She received her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where she was awarded “Outstanding Graduate” in 2004. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in orchestral conducting from the University of Washington. She and her husband Matthew have a daughter Natalie who also plays the piano.

Continuing the grand tradition of the Missoula Symphony Guild, the Missoula Symphony Scholarship Fund is dedicated to providing scholarships for outstanding University of Montana music students who play in the Missoula Symphony Orchestra or sing in the Missoula Symphony Chorale.

This year, the Missoula Symphony Association will award more than $30,000 in scholarships to ten talented young musicians. This commitment is possible thanks to the generosity of the individuals listed below. Every penny of their donations goes directly to scholarships. Our 2023-2024 scholarship recipients are noted on the Orchestra Roster with a “+” sign.

The Joseph Henry Scholarship

The Donald Carey Scholarship

The Virginia Vinal Scholarship

The Lorraine Andrie Prize

The Women’s Guild Tuition Scholarship

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & EDUCATION

For more than 40 years, education and community engagement have been at the heart of the Missoula Symphony Association’s mission. Over the past two years, that commitment has grown steadily under the stewardship of Musical Director Julia Tai. This season the Missoula Symphony Association is proud to present the following educational outreach programs throughout the region:

UM/MSA STRING CAMP

Building on the success of the former Montana Suzuki Institute, the MSA collaborated with the UM School of Music to launch the UM/MSA String Camp in June 2023. Welcoming students entering 1st grade through recent high school graduates, the camp offers beginning through advanced instruction on bass, cello, viola and violin. All this takes place in a safe, fun musical environment that encourages all campers to achieve their very best. Mark your calendars for this summer’s camp, June 23 - 28 2024.

SYMPHONY KIDS @ MISSOULA PUBLIC LIBRARY

Julia Tai presents a series of four mini concerts in the Library’s Imaginarium focusing on the instruments of the orchestra and guest artists from our 2023-2024 season.

Students and families are invited to join the Symphony for the dress rehearsal preceding each Masterworks Concert, enhanced by educational materials and a short talk by Music Director Julia Tai.
