BILL ERICKSON ERICKSON LONGBOARDS Twelve years ago, Bill Erickson made his own longboard out of a piece of walnut. Soon after, he was laid off from his wine industry gig and began making longboards full-time. He reclaims as much of the scrap wood as he can and turns it into unique cutting boards in his studio in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. He mainly sources from arborists and farmers, but has been known to do a little digging at salvage shops. “Instead of a guy who has coffee tables all over my house, I have a ton of stumps, sanded down until they shine,” he says. Erickson admits he still occasionally emails his old boss to thank her for unintentionally setting him down this path. “I don’t really believe this is work.”

SHARI ROGOFF MORAGA LEO’S DRY GOODS When artist Shari Rogoff Moraga first started drawing with thread, it was just for fun. But one makers market later, a store approached her to do wholesale, and Leo’s Dry Goods—named for her grandfather’s shop, where she played among the textiles as a kid—took off. Moraga says she’s inspired by vintage botanical prints and the view of her dogs playing outside her studio. In her drawings, the thread spooled from her sewing machine serves as ink, and the fabric as paper. She doesn’t keep track of time when creating, she just sits at her machine and puts thread to fabric. “It’s very freeing. I toyed with getting a programmable machine, but it’s the act of sitting down and actually drawing as I go that’s what I love about it.”

It’s not that she was moving constantly or always on the go; Pamela Hunter’s daughter Ransom, now six, just never sat still. “She was always kind of moaning, like life was just a little bit painful for her,” Hunter says. When Ransom was two-and-ahalf, Hunter was crocheting a rag rug, dreaming of a cheap option to fill their home with warm accents. “But it was the worst thing you had ever seen; it was squishy and so heavy.” In a serendipitous stroke of genius, Hunter draped the rug over Ransom and something magical happened: “She just melted into it.” It took Hunter 32 hours to make that first blanket. Today, many small triumphs later—including becoming more efficient—she has nine employees hand-weaving the beautifully soothing blankets and throws in a cozy, plant-filled warehouse in downtown Los Angeles. Her first retail shop, Flock, opened in October 2019, ensuring Sheltered Co. blankets can continue to bring comfort to those who need it.

ADVICE

HOME ALONE

Whether you’re heading out on a long trip or to your vacation home for winter, here’s how to get your house in shape before you leave. BY HA L E Y S H A P L E Y

MONKEY BUSINESS IMAGES/SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

WHEN IT COMES TO PLANNING for an extended vacation, the excitement of leaving is one of the best parts—but the anticipation of having to get your house ready for your absence is a little less enjoyable. It’s important, though, because to have a good time while you’re gone, you want to feel confident that everything’s fine back on the home front.

ST R ESS LE SS WITH THIS VACATION - IS- IM M I NE NT CHECK LI ST

WI NTE R I S CO M I N G

Clean out the fridge. Make a plan for perishable food items, ideally incorporating them into dinner recipes in the days leading up to your departure or freezing them. Compost or toss anything else.

In colder climates, there are extra considerations for getting your house through the winter season, even if you don’t have a vacation on the horizon. Here are five ways to winter-proof your home:

Pay attention to your plants. Depending on how long you’re gone and what kind of plants you have, they may be able to wait for their next drop to drink until you get back. If not, line up someone to give them a little water. Stop the mail. A pile of packages or unread newspapers on your front stoop is not a signal you want to send, so put your deliveries on temporary hold or ask a neighbor to make a daily pickup. Consider smart home gadgets. There’s an array of technology that allows you to control and

monitor your home, no matter how far you roam. Lights, thermostats, cameras, and alarms can all be made “smart.” Turn off the water. If the house is going to be empty, you can shut off the main water valve so that you don’t have to worry about an unattended leak. Take out the trash. Right before you go, dispose of any trash—you don’t want to attract any critters while you’re gone or deal with the stench that will build over time. Tidy up. In a last-minute flurry of packing, it can be tempting to leave your house in disarray. Make time to put things in order before you go—you’ll instantly feel more relaxed when you return, helping those vacation vibes last just a bit longer.

Clean your gutters of debris. Have your fireplace inspected before the season begins. Flush your hot-water heater to help it run efficiently. Program your thermostat to maintain a reasonable temperature even when you’re gone so pipes don’t freeze. Add weather stripping on all of your home’s doors and windows.

SERVING SUGGESTIONS When it comes to building out your cheese plate, choose things that will complement and contrast. Add honey to temper blue cheese and sweet, fruity jams to pair with bloomy rinds. Pickled items, like tiny cornichons or red peppers temper stinky, washed rind cheeses. Have crunchy crackers for contrast with soft, spreadable cheeses and a nice, crusty baguette for firmer sliced cheeses.

AN E DT VE IC RET A I N I N G

AS THE OWNER OF San Diego’s Venissimo Cheese shop and cafe, Gina Freize has sampled countless cheeses and created her fair share of cheeseboards. Her philosophy on assembling the perfect platter? Get out of your comfort zone—that means ditching those deli slices—and have fun experimenting. When it comes to selecting which cheeses to offer, it’s all about balance, she says. Plan on two to three ounces per person and include cheeses from a variety of milks (cow, sheep, and goat) and countries (for instance, the United States, France, Italy, and the Netherlands). Above all, variety in texture and type is key. Aim for a mixture of soft, hard, aged, and blue.

HARD Pecorino and Manchego are good options for getting a sheep-milk cheese on the plate, and they are always easy to find. Also, “look for an Alpine cheese like Gruyère, Emmenthaler, or Swiss,” Freize says. Lastly, round out the hard selection with a crumbly ParmigianoReggiano or a clothbound Cheddar cheese. AGED Aged cheeses can have a bloomy rind or a washed rind and can range from soft to hard. Bloomy rinds, including Brie and Camembert, have a white, edible rind. Washed-rind cheeses usually have a reddish tint that Freize says will be slightly sticky “and stinky.” These are cheeses like Chimay, a beer-washed cheese or Limburger, a brinewashed cheese.

BLUE Freize says a good rule of thumb when choosing a blue is “the more blue you see, the stronger it will be.” She also recommends choosing a blue cheese last, according to the texture you haven’t included on your board yet. “Then find the blue that has the texture you’re missing. There are soft and hard blues, ones with crunch, and ones you can flake away.”

PERFECT PAIRINGS Wondering what wines to serve with your cheese platter? It’s best to offer a variety, since so much of it comes down to personal preferences, says Freize, adding that she’s even found a truffle cheese that pairs well with Coke, of all things. However, she notes, the easiest wines to pair with cheese are sauvignon blanc, riesling, and pinot noir—and ports and dessert wines pair especially well with blues. FROMAGE FAUX PAS Though she says she’s never seen anything “uncalled for” on a cheese platter, Freize notes there’s one common mistake: “Cutting away the edible rind,” she says. “It wants to be eaten!”

stic blue

M im

Ru

SOFT Frieze says when it comes to soft cheese, start with something really fresh and “almost yogurt-like in texture,” such as a fromage blanc. Then, add in a soft chèvre, a goat-milk cheese that is crumbly and spreadable.

U.S. HOME PRICE GROWTH

is a function of affordability, and I think we’re at a point where price gains will be limited until there is stronger income growth. I don't see a national bubble forming, but there are several markets where home prices have peaked and are now acting as a drag on national price growth.

THE SLOWING IN HOME SALES we've

seen over the past year is likely to continue in 2020. Households are not moving as frequently as they used to, and this is limiting resale transactions. I do not expect to see any significant growth in 2020 with total sales up by just 2%.

The U.S. has essentially reached full employment. The maturity of the economic cycle—in concert with it being an election year—will likely lead to slowing employment growth, and this will cause a modest increase in the unemployment rate.

U.S. JOB GROWTH

The slowdown in employment growth that started earlier this year will likely continue in 2020 with the number of new jobs dropping by 6.9%. While there are plenty of job openings, hiring trends have slowed, which will lead to slower gains in the job market next year.

a mixed bag. Some states, such as Utah and Washington, will continue to overperform, but the rest of the country will experience some slowing, which is normal for where we are in the economic cycle.

homes remain somewhat muted, but I’m predicting a significant increase in 2020. That said, buildingrelated costs are driving new construction home prices higher, which doesn’t address our biggest need for homes for first-time buyers.

The current economic environment has made it difficult to predict mortgage rates; however, my current forecast suggests that rates will remain below 4% in 2020.

SETTING UP CAMP Windermere agents lend a helping hand at a Washington state summer camp for those who are often overlooked. BY HALE Y SHAP LE Y

EVERY SUMMER, PUGET SOUND-AREA TEENS

and adults with developmental disabilities have the opportunity to attend Lions Camp Horizon in Blaine, Washington. Held on the site of a former Air Force base, there’s plenty of room for campers to participate in classic activities like arts and crafts, talent shows, and sports—but all that space means there’s a lot to maintain. That’s where the Windermere agents in Whatcom County, Washington, come in. The five area offices—Bellingham-Bakerview, Fairhaven, Lynden, Ferndale, and Birch Bay/Blaine—have joined forces to help improve Lions Camp Horizon as part of Windermere Community Service Day. An annual companywide tradition since 1984, Community Service Day is an opportunity for Windermere agents and staff to team up on the first Friday in June and take on a neighborhood improvement project.

“This camp has always been really important for people,” says Rob Washburn, owner of the Windermere Bellingham-Bakerview office. “Once these individuals turn 18, nobody really pays as much attention. We’ve had quite a few agents who have siblings or kids who are special-needs adults, so this hits home for us. These campers come back every single year, and this is their other family.” In their most recent visit to the camp, Windermere agents spruced up the landscaping with donated flowers and shrubs, painted the dormitory lounges, power-washed outdoor benches and walkways, and created wooden risers to make getting in and out of bed easier for campers with limited mobility. They also tackled making the firepit accessible to wheelchairs by installing a sidewalk around it. “It’s great for us to have a big project where we can stay together,” says Washburn, adding that

about 100 people from the area offices lend a hand every Community Service Day. “It really is a big campground, with massive amounts of grass, a huge yard, and old buildings.” That means they never run out of things to do, but in order to maximize their time, advance planning is key. Prior to the big day, they designed the risers, planned the sidewalks, and lined up equipment, such as an excavator, so when it was time to work, they were ready. “It gives a lot of agents opportunities to bring tractors and big equipment, and they enjoy doing that,” Washburn says. “It’s fun to plan out more than we could ever finish. It’s great for camaraderie, and when it’s done, everyone’s excited to do another Community Service Day.” Learn more about the Windermere Foundation at windermerefoundation.com. WINDERMERE.COM

Clockwise: Bavarian Icefest; Leavenworth’s charming downtown; Timbrrr! Music Festival.

Nestled in the Cascade Mountains in central Washington, Leavenworth brings a taste of Europe to the Pacific Northwest. This outdoor adventure hub, located two and a half hours east of Seattle, is known for its alpine architecture and German-inspired touches (think lively beer gardens and schnitzel-centric feasts). Turns out, it’s also an enchanting place to celebrate all things wintry, thanks to the Christmas Lighting Festival that illuminates the village most weekends in the month of December. Holiday cheer comes in the form of musical performances from handbell ringers to Christmas carolers, visits from St. Nicholas, and a parade of costumed holiday characters from the Festhalle to the Front Street Gazebo. On Sundays, kids follow the Cookie Crawl map to score free sweets; all festival long, adults savor the tastes of roasted chestnuts and other snacks paired with warm

spiced wine (served in the traditional glühwein tent). The village truly sparkles during afternoon lighting ceremonies on Saturdays and Sundays. Leavenworth remains festively illuminated through Valentine’s weekend, with more than half a million twinkly lights decking the town. And every year on the weekend preceding Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Bavarian Icefest livens things up with ice carving demos, snowmobile sled pulls, ice fishing sessions, snowball tosses, the Stevens Pass playground, and more frosty fun, all topped off by a fireworks show. On January 25 and 26, the Timbrrr! Music Festival combines wintertime cheer with a weekend of sensational music. And, of course, this dreamy winter destination features any snow sport you can imagine, from sleigh and dogsled riding to tubing, snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing—perhaps rewarded with a cozy cocoa or hot toddy enjoyed by a roaring fire.

On the western edge of Valley County, situated two hours north of Boise, the resort town of McCall features smalltown charm and welcoming vibes. The former logging community, located on the southern shore of Payette Lake and near the center of the Payette National Forest, has evolved into an ideal winter destination for outdoor recreation, especially since it boasts one of the highest average snowfalls in the state. Cozy up in a cabin for some holiday-time rejuvenation, or check out the region’s endless skiing options, like the popular slopes of Brundage Mountain Resort. To warm up and loosen any tight muscles, indulge in a backcountry soak at soothing spots such as Trail Creek Hot Springs, Gold Fork Hot Springs, and Burgdorf Hot Springs (accessible only by snowmobile during the winter months). The community celebrates the snowkissed season during the annual McCall Winter Carnival. Inspired by the Payette Lake Winter Games, first held in 1924 when a train from Boise brought 248 visitors to McCall, the Carnival has evolved into an iconic Idaho gathering featuring live music, comedy shows, art auctions, snow sculptures, parades, snow bike races, and the Monster Dog Pull, where canine athletes race a short track pulling weighted sleds to see who’s top dog. Throughout the fest, vendors offer everything from food to artisan crafts, while skiers and boarders get their fix on nearby trails.

Part desert playground, part rejuvenating oasis, Greater Palm Springs brightens the season with Santa sightings, concerts, parades, and Christmas tree lightings (for which no bundling up is required). Throughout December, Wildlights brings holiday-time animal encounters, more than a million twinkling lights, and meetups with Santa at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. The Temple Sinai of Palm Desert invites the public to celebrate Hanukkah during its Festival of Lights (think latkes, cocoa, crafts, and singing). And in this town of make-believe, you’re invited to stretch your imagination as you take in simulated nighttime snowfalls at The Gardens on El Paseo shopping and dining complex or while strolling North Pole Village at the City of Cathedral City Civic Center. Get in the spirit at performances around town, including “Sounds of the Season,” presented by Palm Canyon Theatre, and “Colors of Christmas,” a holiday tradition at McCallum Theatre. This year’s production stars Peabo Bryson with a new lineup of stars that pull off an inspiring evening of holiday music and classics, all backed by a 12-piece band. On the other hand, if you’ve landed in Palm Springs with the intention of simply finding time to unwind, sink back into your poolside chaise with a cocktail in hand and think of all you are grateful for this holiday season.
