Letter from the Editor wrong? No! They were just engrossed in reading it! Odd that others changed their size, front page and content just weeks after we arrived. In the ten years that have intervened since, one of the major disappointments is that, sadly, Loch Fyne is no longer here. We’ve been through coronavirus and lockdown, economic uncertainty and war in Europe. However, one positive is that we now have a radio station that will soon be launching on DAB+ across the city. The station has already gone from strength to strength with a solid team of John, Jess, Jon, Connor, myself and Chrissie – and total dedication to the Arts in Winchester and beyond. Our COVID-19 recovery project means that arts venues across the South have had positive help from us with our huge and fantastic review team. Another positive is the fact that the radio station has a permanent home at Workshop in Winchester. I will be forever grateful to Ed and his team for making us feel so welcome. Forgive us that there are a lot of people in this edition who want to say hello and wish us congratulations. There are first-time advertisers too, like Jane Austen’s House on this page. Thank you for your support. The best thing that all of us could do is to get out and support them all over the summer!

this particular day is one of them. Day 1 of Winchester Today and a gathering of loads of people who wanted something new, something different. The eventual front page look was a culmination of deliberation and sessions with the first students on our Project Alfie:150 day at Lainston House. The original layout editor, Johnny Blonde, had also spent hours at my house wanting to get the look and content just right. That first day was met with silence as I dished out the first edition of the newspaper. Was there something

Hat’s Terrific! By Kevin Glover Editor There are just a few days to go now until the magic of Hat Fair is
with us once again in Winchester, involving venues across the city that have never been used before. Many of us have our own special memories of Hat Fair. For some of us, it stretches back 38 years to Day 1 in 1974 when it was merely a festival for buskers. I’m just a relative newcomer and experienced my first Hat Fair back in 1989.

Hat Fair, the UK’s longest running festival of Outdoor Arts, is back Friday 1 - Sunday 3 July! This year audiences of all ages can watch bright and bold street theatre, music, dance, comedy and circus, performed by the very best local, regional, national and international acts, in front of the city’s landmarks, cafes and restaurants, shops and parks – turning the city in to a stage once more! Hat Fair will commence on the Friday with the Carnival, when hundreds of local school-children will parade through the city streets in colourful costumes and headdresses they have made in school. They will start at the Great Hall before making their way down to Abbey Gardens. The parade will be followed by Autin Dance Theatre’s Eko, a 13ft Sea Giant puppet, that features in Out of the Deep Blue – a moving tale about our earth’s climate emergency. Friday and Saturday feature an exclusive international visit from the mighty Fidget Feet with A Handful of Dreams, (made possible with support from Culture Ireland) an awe-inspiring and heart-warming outdoor aerial circus show.

Tara Theatre presents Final Farewell – a theatrical experience capturing the voices of seven individuals and a pug in six poignant stories about loved ones who were lost during the pandemic; while Theatre Temoin’s FLOOD includes ‘sound umbrellas’ (featuring voices and music), circus and acrobatics to tell the story of how our coastline and communities have become ‘seasick’. Other shows include Dizzy O Dare’s Falconry Dismay. Head falconer Kevin Tickle leads a breathtaking display of majestic birds of prey, all with unique behaviours. Or Join Zum Zum’s giant Hippos and ask, are the humans disguised as hippos or are they hippos searching for themselves inside the humans? Cat and Mouse Theatre recruit stars and crew from the street in Blockbuster Factory; while Bash Street Theatre’s The Cameraman features songs, music and silent comedy in a piece about an inept cameraman who becomes involved in the theft of the world’s largest diamond! Avanti’s Full Circle draws a crowd through a series of odd actions, with strangers soon helping the performers with a series of tasks and one audience member facing consequences; Curious Company Theatre’s Department of Complaints wants to hear from grumbling audience members. While Wet Picnic’s Dinner Table is a crash course in decent dining and eating etiquette, surreal and fun with audience participation, food mess and dancing.

Hat Fair is a commissioning partner of Without Walls – a network of festivals that work with artists to bring Outdoor Arts to towns and cities across the UK – this year’s line up features a number of co-commissioned productions including, to name a few, Middle Child’s There Should Be Unicorns – a brand-new outdoor musical piece, incorporating hip hop, dance and theatre, about an 11-year-old Jasmine who plans to take on the bullies, villains and ideas that shape the world around her. Fatt Projects’ Big Gay Disco Bike will be on the move – so make sure to join cabaret superstar Fatt Butcher as the drag icon ‘in the making’ brings D-I-S-C-O back to the streets. Plus, Hat Fair veterans Daryl Beeton and Mimbre return with Look Mum, No Hands! – a tender coming-of-age story about two friends who playfully test the boundaries to see what is possible. One of the characters uses a wheelchair to create new shapes and choreographies that are original and unexpected.
Once again Hat Fair will welcome back international street theatre performers or ‘Hatters’ to busk (or ‘hat’ – which is how the festival got its name). Including festival favourite Fraser Hooper, with a mesmeric mime show and complete disregard for his own safety; Felicity Footloose who lives in the 80s and just wants to dance and perform daredevil acrobats; Emillio Allessi with a comic juggling show; Daniel Gonclaves with a participatory clown show; and gentle magician, Jay Park – who tries to be slick but keeps making mistakes until the end of his show when he excites with impressive tricks! Plus, many more, as well as Hat Fair veterans Garaghty and Thom with Streetcomedy – circus trickery, improv and comedy routines suitable for all ages. There will also be mini golf; circus skills from children’s favourite Juggling Jake; and the return of Out of Bounds, with Knights of the Renowned Fable – recreating adventures with wizards, kings and dragons. Audiences will get another chance to immerse themselves in the giant colourful labyrinth of chambers, Colourscape, by Eye Music Trust. Plus, there will be food, drink and gift stalls!

New exhibition and book reveals life behind the walls of Winchester Prison A thought-provoking exhibition supported by Hampshire Cultural Trust sharing the stories of the people who live and work at Winchester Prison launches this summer, touring libraries and civic venues across the county. The exhibition and an accompanying book tell the story of 175 years of Winchester Prison history, the harsh prison regimes of the past and today’s focus on education, training and reform. Prison life is revealed in a series of interviews with staff including Governor James Bourke who shares the challenges of supporting prisoners with complex social, mental and physical needs. The impact of what often can be life-changing education and training, healthcare and counselling is told in the words of prisoners who have turned their lives around at HMP Winchester. The book and exhibition were written by our colleague at Winchester Magazine, Liz Kavanagh who spent over six months visiting the prison before, after and during the pandemic when prisoners were almost permanently locked in cells. Photography by award-winning Winchester photographer Javaid Akhtar features throughout, revealing the stark reality of prison life. Liz comments: “Each year, 2000 men pass through Winchester Prison, on remand, awaiting release and serving sentences. “The book and exhibition provide an overview of the many individuals who make up the prison – from teachers and prison officers to the prisoners themselves. Their stories have been written as they have been told - without agenda. “They reveal the huge challenges that the prison faces operationally as well as the dedication of the people who work there. They also highlight the pitfalls of a criminal justice system where reoffending is far too common. The stories told by prisoners are particularly insightful, revealing how debt, drug addiction and lack of family support can all lead to crime.” Deborah Neubauer is Director of Community and Impact
at Hampshire Cultural Trust: “The exhibition and book have provided real insight into what life is like behind the walls in one of Winchester’s most prominent landmarks. by Jon Turner, Sailsbury Museum All of us at The Salisbury Museum will be raising a glass to celebrate Winchester Today’s tenth anniversary .
I took on the role of Chair of Trustees at the museum just before the pandemic brought the world to a standstill. The timing was awful for everyone I realise, but on a personal front our team was just weeks away from jumping into a £4.4 million fundraising campaign to raise the money to fully refurbish, contemporise and expand our beautiful organisation. We in Salisbury had only just picked ourselves up after the disastrous consequences following the Novichok poisonings.

We used our time as best we could, mainly arranging Zoom calls and presentations to some extremely kind and generous benefactors. In fact, we were so pleased to discover that many potential donors were actively seeking to ensure that arts organisations were protected. It was often quite extraordinary to suddenly find ourselves on a screen in the kitchens of some of the country’s most influential backers.

And this is where Winchester Today came in. Rather than avoiding the issue, the Arts Show on the radio and the newspaper ramped up coverage of the local arts organisations in order to support local enterprises, giving many of us a hugely welcome step-up to help tell our community that we were still there, desperate to re-open, planning ahead like crazy and offering new digital services online in the meantime. We received superb coverage of our James Bond book illustration exhibition from Winchester Today as well as for our new Fashion Gallery when it was opened by Dame Zandra Rhodes. And that support has never waned.
Thank you Winchester Today. Happy tenth birthday, and thank you to all readers and listeners for your support. We are really, REALLY close to our final target and, as we have been granted a full £3.2 million pounds by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the works have started. At The Salisbury Museum we are now looking forward to Winchester Today’s twentieth anniversary in our spanking ‘new’ mediaeval building.

Hat Fair 2022, returning Fri 1 - Sun 3 July, will also shine a light on local and emerging talent. On the Saturday, Parchment Street will host the Top Hat Competition when University of Winchester students perform to a panel of judges for the chance to return to the festival the next year as a programmed act. Last year there were two winners so this year DoDoDramatics are back with Queen of the East about Cleopatra’s rise in power, in Abbey Gardens; while Michelle Dabenett will appear on St John’s Almshouses lawns with Blanket Fort Babble about three cousins who build a blanket fort in the woods but wonder if they should have, once the sun goes down! Playmakers Youth Theatre - our exciting offer for young people from School Year 2 through to 25 years old - have also been working on a number of original shows for the festival. Working with professional theatre-makers to make this new work, you can expect to see comedy, murder mystery, drama and musicals being performed across the festival weekend.

Plus, there will be local talent aplenty performing across the city centre on the Friday and Saturday; and on the Music Stage on the Sunday. Including Americana, country and folk music from 5-piece band, Barefoot Soul; singing and street dance from Winchester-based Blue Apple, which supports performers with learning disabilities; songs and tales about the city’s past from time-travelling troubadour, Baldwyn Bard (performer Josh Vaatstra); panda beatboxing and life hacks like ‘potato mindfulness’ from ‘practitioners of Wellbeing Through Nonsense’, Panda-monium; a contemporary dance piece inspired by themes such as strength in the face of adversity by wheelchair dance group, Liberate Dance; plus choirs, ukuleles, international dance and much, much more.
We are hugely excited to platform another fantastic line-up of local artists at this year’s Hat Fair. We will be welcoming artists from a variety of disciplines including music, dance, comedy and performance art. This year we move back onto the streets and will be popping up all over Winchester city centre to entertain audiences from far and wide. HAT FAIR 2021
Hat Fair Director Andrew Loretto talks to Winchester Today about getting a full festival together for the first time in three years. “Well, it’s fantastic to be back in the city centre for Friday and Saturday, and I must admit it’s been a challenging time. For those of us working in the arts, it has been slightly surreal. Obviously we have reopened the theatre and we did manage to put on some kind of Hat Fair for the Sunday last year. “It had to be a different model under specific guidelines. We have to remember that Covid is still with us, but of all the art forms, outdoor events are the ones that most people feel comfortable with. “I’ve been to a number of festivals this year, and it’s been great to see people welcome what’s happened and feel comfortable about that. It will be lovely to be back in Winchester city centre and reset the traditional Hat Fair.” I point out to him that when we met at Hat Fair in summer 2021, he did seem happy with what they’d managed to achieve on the Sunday: “What was lovely was seeing people out and about and being comfortable. We had to have restricted conditions and make it work in 4-hour time slots, but we had a good response.” And how about the artists this year? “Well, we work with a huge number of artists. There’s a 3 to 4 year conversation with some of them… there are a large number that we’ve been trying to bring over for three years. We’ve been able to bring some of them this year but we have to be realistic. So many companies have been impacted. It’s about finding the right moment at the right time and for them being ready to tour. “Again, I have to repeat to you that we have to be realistic – we are not in the same place that we were in 2019… the world has shifted and we have to reflect that in the programme.
