No question about it—it was a biggie. Ask anyone and they will tell you. Lives turned upside down. Buildings, hotels, restaurants—very few escaped unscathed.

As we move to the future, let us not forget to thank all those who labored so hard for so long to make it possible for vacationers to enjoy this magnificent island.

Yet the island of St Barthelemy and its denizens took their temperature—for most, it measured normal—and to work they went, with passion, with desire, with fortitude, with courage, and most importantly, determination to rebuild and succeed.

Thank you to all who worked and sacrificed, so we might enjoy the fruits of your labor of love for St Barthelemy. And of course, to all of those who came in 2017/18 to show love and provide encouragement— the very same people thank you as well.

Within days everyone knew what they had to do. Whether they had the money was a good question, but most knew they would get their insurance at some point, and so they just did it. Whatever it was. Today, we look at the results of many people’s labor and efforts with a certain awe, amazement, and pride.

So many folks gave of themselves in so many ways, too numerous to count. But the pride shows. The rebuild was neither haphazard nor superficial. Many vowed not to permit sloppy rebuilds, but rather committed to making the structures stronger and more impervious to another storm.

The perfect way to wrap up a day of shopping around town, Shell Beach is located just a short walk from the boutiques and restaurants of Gustavia. When you’re in the mood to order a cool drink and enjoy that priceless view of sailboats gliding by and the sunset beyond, this is the place. Swimming is easy here, and if the cool drink brings out your adventurous side, the island’s best cliff-diving spot is off the rocks to the east. If you wish to be close to town, Shell Beach and Shellona, try WIMCO villas SBV and ANG.

One of St. Barths’ last remaining undiscovered treasures, Corossol Beach is tricky to find but well worth it for families with small children. Park your car just steps from the water’s edge in one of the island’s oldest residential communities, spread your towels out on the short stretch of sand and let the kids frolic in perfectly placid water. Saline’s little sister to the west, Gouverneur Beach is an excellent pre-lunch option, with parking just steps from the water and a shady spot for keeping the little ones out of the sun.

While the culture is as French as you’d find in the arrondissements of Paris, cuisines range in flavor from French to Japanese to Italian to the unmistakable stateside sensation of an all-American burger joint. And surrounded as it is by beautiful azure ocean, rest assured that there’s an abundance of fresh seafood every single day. Whether your vacation is focused on dining out or living like a local and cooking in, a WIMCO villa gives you the option to do both.

When my husband Mike and I had the opportunity to visit St. Barths for the first time, we stayed in WIMCO’s villa VUE, situated high on the hill in Colombier. As we entered the villa, we were welcomed by panoramic views of St. Barths, Gustavia harbor and the adjacent islands of St. Kitts and Nevis on the far horizon. The view alone was so stunning that we were rendered speechless for a moment. This four-bedroom villa included beautiful indoor and outdoor living spaces, a gym, a private infinity pool, a jacuzzi and a fully equipped, state-of-the-art kitchen (espresso machine and all). The calming energy was just as addictive as the high-powered cappuccinos we made every morning. We had everything we needed to make this vacation whatever we wanted it to be, right there in our villa.

Cooking while on vacation has everything to do with accessibility to local ingredients and planning approachable recipes that follow suit. We caught the sunrise one morning and decided to take a five-minute drive into Gustavia harbor to visit the open-air fish market. When we arrived, the fishermen who manage it and double as expert fishmongers were already filleting the grouper and mahi-mahi they had caught that same morning. A multitude of species and colors lay on massive beds of ice, while local chefs quickly staked their claims. As we pondered our order, another fisherman returned from his morning catch. We watched intently as he fed the tarpon that circled nearby in the hopes that fish scraps would come their way. The opportunity to see, smell, barter and buy seafood this fresh is a rarity, and is a mustdo for any home cook.

FRESH ST. BARTHS CEVICHE 1 lb locally-caught fish (at the fish market, ask for wahoo, dourade or merou, skin-off filets) 1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice 1/2 red onion, finely diced 1 green bell pepper, finely diced 1/2 inch piece of ginger, peeled and minced 1/2 bunch of cilantro, finely chopped, leaving a couple sprigs left for garnish 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil Salt Cut the filets into a 1/2” dice and gently mix in a large bowl with 3/4-cup lime juice. Cover and refrigerate for 25-30 minutes so the fish “cooks” in the acidity of the lime. Drain fish from lime juice, transferring it to a serving bowl with a slotted spoon. Add the onion, pepper, ginger, chopped cilantro, olive oil and remaining lime juice. Salt to taste and garnish with cilantro. Serve with pita chips, toasted baguette slices or baby romaine lettuce leaves.

When we arrived back at Villa VUE, we watched as boats drifted in and out of Gustavia, planning an easy day of meals from the beautiful seafood we’d brought home. For lunch, we enjoyed fresh ceviche by the pool, loaded with local fruit and vegetables as well as our haul from the fish market that morning. For dinner, we grilled lobster tails and paired them with a tropical salsa using fresh papaya and mango that we picked up at Marché U (St. Jean) and Oasis Market (Lorient). As we sipped Sancerre at the outdoor dining table, taking in the sunset on one side and the gorgeous open kitchen on the other, we smiled when we realized we had created a true
