Playa Del Rey, Los Angeles, CA Infrastructural | Recreational Nov 2021 | 6 Weeks Critic: Laura Peterson Design Partner: Léonie Muno Research Partners: Erica Behm Haley Beverlin Meandering within the grounds of one of the largest water reclamation plants in the country, SPAcific (spa-space-pacfic) is a bold intervention at an infrastructural scale.

The project’s span transforms the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant’s vast functional footprint into an inviting, intimate, and exciting space. The project manuvers the scale shift found between water used on an infrastructural level and how people interact with it on a personal level.

Spatial tension is created between light structure holding heavy pools, resulting in a literal recreational intersection with the Hyperion’s exsiting architecture.

Located in Playa del Rey, Los Angeles, CA, across from the Dockweiler State Beach, the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant is the largest facility of its kind in the region. Hyperion serves the entire city of LA, and some parts of the LA County, totalling an area of over 600 square miles and a population of over 4 million. The facility itself covers 0.2 square miles, stretching over almost a mile.

This site research drawing (produced in collaboration with Behm and Beverlin) demonstrates the massive scale of Hyperion, as well as the complex system that connects it with the rest of the city. Hyperion does not only process over 250 million gallons of wastewater every day, but it also mediates infrastructure at different scales.

SPAcific invites bathers to come up the Nodal Tower, where they can store their belongings, shower, and get ready for a sensual experience. From the Tower, there is a continuous elevated pathway that meanders through the clarifiers on site. Going up and down, allowing bathers to sometimes be close to the (waste) water in facilities, sometimes be high up enough to have a view of the entire reclamation plant.

The flow diagram demonstrates how SPAcific is intricatedly connected to the complicated water system in Hyperon. Treated water that is safe enough to be discharged into the ocean but not for human consumption is drawn up to the top of the Nodal Tower. There, a three-phase filtration system is used to treat the water before heating it up or cooling it down and transported to the pools.

HY-PARK

S Thayer St, Ann Arbor, MI Communal | Cultural Nov 2019 | 6 Weeks Critic: Yojairo Lomeli Situated in an elongated lot on South Thayer Street in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the HYPARK is an archive of both the hydrangeas and drawings of them. It is an response to the unique urban fabric of the college town — taking the form of a vertical shrub, the building’s footprint creates a garden that connects the street and the back alley.

This early sketch outlines the relationship of the context and the proposed massing (orange) of the project. The main body of the archive is thin and tall so that a large portion of the site could remain open.

The form-making vocabulary that I begin to synthesize include surfaces grounded on solids that blurs the line between heavy and light volume.

This grammar creates smaller volumes that stack into clusters, resembling the form of a shrub.

The project is named after the three most characterizing elements of its premise: Hydrangea: a kind of plant whose flowers change color according to the acidity of the soil they are planted in Hybrid: the project is a combination of an archive, a community gathering space and a park Hyperactive: the project is designed to be a public space that brings new dynamics to Ann Arbor

The ground floor plan’s gentle touch and the formal vocabulary developed earlier incubates this porous envelope that leans on the sides of the site, with sky gardens scattered on multiple levels.

Bandemer Rowing Center Bandemer Park, Ann Arbor, MI Communal | Recreational Mar 2020 | 6 Weeks (remote) Critic: Jen Maigret Located in the Bandemer Park by the Huron River, the Bandemer Rowing Center consists of two slender buildings that stretch along the shore, with the Boathouse being seasonal, operating only during the warm months, and the Fieldhouse to the south contains a rowing tank, ergometer training room and a yoga/workout space.

The elongated geometry resonates with the shoreline, which encourages rowers and other users to interact with the water. The two docks pointing at opposite directions allows professional athletes and public rowers to share the water space in harmony.

In 1942, Josef Albers began a series of lithographs. Titled Graphic Tectonic, the series of images consists of loops of orthogonal lines that do not only create a rhythm, but also a false sense of spatiality. The project begins by mapping the image onto a cuboid, three-dimensionalizing the lines as well as the sense of space created by them.

Rendition

The full scale draft model is pushed, pulled and cut to make spaces that mimics the power of the lines. The illusion of the spatiality is realized, at the same time creating new illusions.

As a sequel to the previous investigation of space-making, this project focuses on the positive-negative relationship of a volume.

A formwork that embodies the positive space reveals a rockite cast that takes up the negative space.

To dissolve the dominance of solid in space, the void in the previous geometry is solidified, thus visualized. The two interpretations technically join together to become a 6”x8”x4” cuboid, with some revisions to underline the flickering status of both the solid and void.

Ethereality is an exploration of the state of lightness. Geome-tric manipulations result in this experiential promenade whose formal gestures invite one into spaces of unpredictability.

This space-making practice begins with an arbitrary folding of a planar chipboard. The four textured draft models differentiate the inside (azure) and the outside (white) of the construct. Through manual manipulation, the form begins to show a variety of spatial qualities achieved by pivoted surfaces, slanted surfaces and compressions.

Unpredictability is achieved through two contrastive languages on the two sides of the vertical ground: faceted surfaces and staggered pathways. The axonometric analysis on the left breaks down the entire contruct into its components that weave together the overall experience.

“back to back is a joint portfolio that celebrates not only the work produced in a studio environment, but also the studio itself.”

-intro of back to back Produced in collaboration with Skof, with whom I sit back to back in the studio, the unfoldable french-fold book features the objects we produced in the fall semester in 2019. The distinctively colored hatches does not only proclaim authorship, but also creates a wavering figure-ground relation-ship on the continuous pages.

“Instead of photographs with light and shadows that accentuate the solidness and spatiality of the form, the spread pushes part of the abstraction to the other end — text. While the hatched shapes on the page retain some of the rudimentary geometries of the three-dimensional form, words, these very letters on this very page, although about the form, have no resemblance to the form whatsoever, until we fill it around the void created by the hatched shapes, like how formwork is filled for a rockite cast.”

On these few spreads we experimented with a unique element of shapemaking on paper — text. We flattened the form to its two-dimensional facade and filled it texts about the form. The hatched geometry, which was a result of a detached physical formwork, has become a formwork for the text’s layout.

The Kickback is a celebration of the semester’s worth of pro(ob)jects, a social gathering that mimics and parallels studio culture.

The close proximity helps illustrate the affinity that these pro(ob)jects have from one another. The Kickback also seeks to pull out certain personalities embedded within them, highlighting individuality while working to compose a whole image. ”

The plan is divided into four parts by function: Garden, Living, Circulation, Entry/Facade. Each member is responsible for a part of the model and each section provides an opportunity to look into the details of the house from perspectives that might not be found online or in books. The elevation of my part of the model (opposite) shows the relationship between the porous back facade and the spacious garden.

Maps 2020 - 2022

This is a collection of different maps I have created. Some of them are based on geographic information in real life, while others are fictional; some of them are inspired by modern-day styles, while others recall older aesthetics.

This series of maps includes a provincial boundary map, population density map, and a linguistic distribution map of a fictional country named Rowtar.

Below is a railway map of the Greater Bay Area in China. On the right (below) are two railway maps of NewShank, a fictional city in the video game Minecraft that I have been playing/working on since 2014. Both are inspired by the current Hong Kong MTR system map (right top).

Sun Sun’s Street Map of Kowloon (1974) is one of the precedents for the Detailed Map of Rigtton, which is a fictional neighborhood inside of the fictional city NewShank.
