Heritage Wilmot The Heritage Wilmot Advisory Committee preserves and promotes the rich heritage of Wilmot Township.

The committee assists with designations of heritage properties, celebrates local and regional heritage days and participates in Doors Open Waterloo Region. www.heritagewilmot.ca

Adopt-A-Road Program The Township of Wilmot’s ADOPT-A-ROAD program has been established as a public service for volunteers to enhance the local litter collection activities of the Township of Wilmot by picking up litter along the Township road right-of-ways.

It is a way environmentally conscious citizens, community and civic organizations, private businesses, and industry can contribute to a cleaner and more beautiful road system.

What is recWeb Online Registration recWeb is the online registration program for the Township of Wilmot, and can be accessed on the homepage of the township’s website, www.wilmot.ca. Registering for programs using recWeb allows users to register in advance of alternative registration methods. This process is fast, convenient and easy to use.

What Will I Need to Use recWeb Online Registration 1) 2) 3) 4)

www.wilmot.ca Course Code The course code is a 4 digit number representing a program within the Recreation Guide. Entering the code in the search field on the recWeb website is the fastest way to locate a program.

How to Use recWeb Online Registration 1) Click the LOGIN button (top right) 2) Enter your Login ID and PIN Number 3) Click the PROGRAMS tab and enter the course code or search for a program by clicking on the Aquatics drop down menu 4) Click the ADD button to insert the program to your cart 5) For each program, select the family member you wish to register using the client drop down box 6) To register in another program or register an additional family member, click on CONTINUE SHOPPING, until you have all of the desired programs in your cart, then click on GO TO CHECKOUT 7) On the Details Screen, complete the medical information or the special needs box, if applicable. Wilmot Aquatic Centre Program Information Program Assistance Wilmot Aquatic Centre will not refuse admission to our Learnto-swim programs due to lack of funds. Please contact the Aquatics Manager for more information. All inquiries are confidential. Assistance Applications must be submitted 2 weeks prior to the start date of the course.

Non-Resident/Ratepayer Fee An additional 25% will be charged to the total registration fee for participants who reside outside of Wilmot Township.

Participants who do not live in the Township but pay taxes to Wilmot Township should bring in their Tax Form when they register, to avoid paying this additional fee.

Refunds/Withdrawals Requests for refunds will be issued up to the third lesson. A 20% administrative fee with apply and the amount will be prorated based on the number of lessons that have passed in the session, not the number of lessons attended.

If the customer decides to leave the financial credit on their account, the 20% administrative fee will be waived. Unused credits will expire after 3 years.

Program Cancellations Please be aware, classes may be cancelled due to insufficient registration. Staff members will attempt to reach persons registered in cancelled programs by phone. Participants will be given the option to move to another time, put a credit on their account or a refund.

Absentee Policy Students must attend only the class in which they are formally registered. We regret we cannot accommodate requests for make up classes at other times.

Lessons in Leisure Pool The majority of our preschool classes are offered in the leisure pool. However lessons may be moved to the lap pool without notice.

Pool Closure Dates

AQUATIC PROGRAMS Pool Rentals Wilmot Aquatic Centre rentals are based on one hour of pool use and include the lifeguards and use of pool equipment.

Please contact the Aquatic Manager for rental times or to book the pool.

COST: BOTH POOLS $204.29 plus applicable taxes per hour for groups of 50 or less* LAP POOL ONLY $151.33 plus applicable taxes per hour for groups of 50 or less* LEISURE POOL ONLY $75.66 plus applicable taxes per hour for groups of 50 or less* * for groups greater than 50, an extra $22.25 plus applicable taxes per required lifeguard will be added.

Personal Belongings Staff are not allowed to accept personal belongings for safekeeping. All patrons are warned that valuables and belongings should not be left unattended. Take precautions by using the lockers, leaving the items at home or take the items to the deck and leave within your view. The Township of Wilmot is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Locks are available for purchase at the Customer Service Desk.

Oops, Accidents Happen !!

Pool foulings cause the pool to be closed. Please help us keep our pool germ free by: • Please don’t swim when you have diarrhea or if you feel unwell.

This is very important for children in diapers.

• Washing your body thoroughly with soap and water before entering or re-entering the pool.

• Washing your hands with soap and water after using the washroom or changing diapers.

• Do not spit in the pool. In fact, avoid getting water in your mouth.

• Feed your children at least one hour before swimming.

• Take your child to the bathroom before entering the pool, and frequently during your pool visit • Children not toilet-trained must wear swim pants made for swimming, regular diapers are not permitted. (Swim diapers are available for sale at the front desk) The pool will be closed a minimum of 1 hour for formed fecal matter and vomit and 12 hours for Diarrhea (liquid stool).

A Lifeguard accepts enormous responsibility. They work hard to master principals and skills crucial to one of the greatest risk management challenges of organized recreation throughout the province. A lifeguard gains life skills that can be transferred to several aspects of life. Skills that a lifeguard gains are: communication, conflict resolution, responsibility, teamwork, public relations, and administration.

Attendance 100% attendance is encouraged for the Bronze level course and mandatory for all leadership courses. Full attendance and participation increase the chance of success in the programs.

Preschool

AQUACTIC PROGRAMS Red Cross Swim Preschool Program Starfish (6 to 15 months) A Parented Class STARFISH is for infants 6 to 15 months of age. Classes are 30 minutes in length and require parent participation. In this introductory class for infants (6 to 15 months) and their parent/ caregiver, participants will have the opportunity to experience buoyancy and movement through songs and play in the water. They will have the opportunity to learn front, back and vertical positions in the water and shallow water entries and exits. To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their head up. This level is participation-based only, without formal evaluation.

Duck (16 to 24 months) A Parented Class DUCK TOTS (16 to 24 months) Parented 30 min. In this beginner class for toddlers (16 to 24 months) and their parent/caregiver, participants will have the opportunity to learn rhythmic breathing, moving forward and backward, front and back float with recovery, and shallow water entries and exits. Age is the only condition for entering this level. This level is participation-based only, without formal evaluation.

Sea Turtle (25 to 36 months) A Parented Class SEA TURTLE is for toddlers 25 to 36 months of age. Classes are 30 minutes in length and require parent participation.

In this beginner class for toddlers (25 to 36 months) and their parent/caregiver, participants will have the opportunity to work on submersion, front and back floats and glides, jumping into chest-deep water with assistance, kicking on front and front swim. This level is participation based only, without formal evaluation.

Sea Otter (3 to 5 years) A Transitional Level SEA OTTER is for children 3 to 5 years of age. Classes are 30 minutes. (Transitional Class - Up to the first 4-5 Lessons Parents are in the water with the child, then for the remainder of lessons parents are in the gallery). This transition wil be monitored by the instructor and may move at a different rate than indicated. In this beginner class, preschoolers (3 to 5 years) will work towards swimming without parent participation, participants will learn to swim through fun games and songs, and the basics of front and back floats and glides, kicking on front with a buoyant object, and will be able to swim 1 meter upon completion of this level. Emphasis is on safety skills including site orientation, safe entries and exits and using a PFD. To enter this level, the preschooler must be at least 3 years of age at the start of the program.

Salamander (3 to 5 years) SALAMANDER is for children 3 to 5 years of age. Classes are 30 minutes and the class is un-parented. In this class for preschoolers (3 to 5 years), participants will work on improving their front and back float and jumping into chest-deep water unassisted. Kicking is added to the front and back glide and swimmers will be able to swim 2 meters upon completion. Emphasis is on safety skills including choosing floating objects for assistance, using a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Games and songs enhance the fun of the class. Salamander is the next progression in the Learn to Swim program, following the completion of Sea Otter or a participant that does not require the transitional class.

Sunfish (3 to 5 years) SUNFISH is for children 3 to 5 years of age.

Classes are 30 minutes.

In this class for preschoolers (3 to 5 years), participants learn to swim 5 meters, float without assistance in deep water, and jump into chest deep water while maintaining surface support for 5 seconds.

Emphasis is on safety skills including deep water skills and the use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Games and songs enhance the fun of the class. Sunfish is the next progression in the Learn to Swim program, following the completion of Salamander.

Crocodile (3 to 5 years) CROCODILE is for preschoolers 3 to 5 years of age. Classes are 30 minutes. In this class participants learn to swim 5 m on their front and back, increase their distance on front and back glide with kick to 7 m, jump into deep water, maintain surface support for 10 seconds and begin using rhythmic breathing. Emphasis is on safety skills including recognizing when a swimmer needs help. Games and songs enhance the fun of the class. Crocodile is the next progression in the Learn to Swim program, following the completion of Sunfish.

Whale (3 to 5 years) WHALE is for children 3 to 5 years of age.

Classes are 30 minutes in the Winter Session.

In this class for preschoolers (3 to 5 years), participants learn to swim 15 meters, jump into chest deep water while maintaining surface support for 20 seconds and perform a front and back swim for 10 meters. Emphasis is on safety skills including when and where to swim, sitting dives, jumping into and changing direction in deep water and throwing assists.

Games and songs enhance the fun of the class. Whale is the next progression in the Learn to Swim program, following the completion of Crocodile.

Red Cross Swim Kids Program Program Swim Kids Level 1 Length: 45 minutes 5 or Completion of Preschool levels at 5

Participants must be 5 years of age or have completed the Preschool levels to move into the Swim Kids program. To move up in levels the swimmer must successfully complete the requirements of the previous level.

Swim Kids Level 1 is for children 5 years of age and older or for those who have completed the required preschool level. Classes are 45 minutes in length. In this class for children (5 years of age or completed preschool level) pre-participants receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats and glides. Emphasis is on building endurance by working on the 5 meter front swim. Swim Kids 1 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 1, participants work on propulsion skills to move Swim Kids Level 2 through the water. Participants work on front swim 10m, front and back glides with flutter kick, side glides and a Length: 45 minutes 5 or Completion of Level 1 roll over glide with 5 m kick. Emphasis is on weight transfer, calling EMS and creating awareness about deep water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the flutter kick 10m and a distance swim of 10m. Swim Kids Level 2 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

Swim Kids Level 3 Length: 45 minutes 5 or completion of Level 2 or Whale

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 2, participants increase their distance on front and back glide with flutter kick, perform flutter kick unassisted, wear a PFD in deep water, float in deep water, and swim 15 meters continuously. Emphasis on water safety includes when and where to swim, sitting dives and surface support for 20 seconds. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15 m swim. Swim Kids Level 3 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

Swim Kids Level 4 Length: 45 minutes Completion of Level 3

In this class, for children, who have completed Swim Kids Level 3, participants learn back swim with shoulder roll and front crawl 10 m, work on flutter kick on back, and perform kneeling dives. Participants work on surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and develop a greater sense of self safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 m swim. Swim Kids Level 4 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

Swim Kids Level 5 Length: 45 minutes Completion of Level 4

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 4, participants develop front crawl 15 m, learn back crawl 15 m and whip kick on back. Emphasis in on water safety skills including how to be a safe boater, cold water survival, stride entries and treading water for 1 minute. Endurance is developed through flutter kick 25 m and a distance swim of 50 m. Swim Kids Level 5 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

Swim Kids Level 6 Length: 45 minutes Completion of Level 5

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 5, participants increase their distance on front and back crawl 25 m, learn elementary back stroke 15 m, and learn dolphin kick. Emphasis is on water safety skills including how to be a safe boater, when and where to go on ice, throwing assist without a line, head first sculling on back 10m, and treading water 1:30 minutes and front dives. Endurance is built through a 75m swim. Swim Kids Level 6 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

Swim Kids Level 7 Length: 45 minutes Completion of Level 6

Swim Kids Level 8 Length: 45 minutes Completion of Level 7

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 6, participants build skills and endurance for the front crawl 50m, back crawl 50m and elementary backstroke 25m and are introduced to whip kick on the front 15 m. Participants learn about airway and breathing obstructions and participate in reaching assists with rescue equipment. Swimming endurance is increased by completion of a 150m swim. Swim Kids Level 7 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 7, participants will increase their distance on front and back crawl 75m, and elementary back stroke 25m. Participants will learn breast stroke 15m, eggbeater/tread water, and perform feet first surface dives and standing shallow dives. Emphasis is on water safety including hypothermia and the dangers of open water. Swimming endurance is increased to 300m. Swim Kids Level 8 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

Swim Kids Level 9 Length: 45 minutes Completion of Level 8

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 8, participants refine the front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary backstroke 50m and breaststroke 25m, encouraging participants to combine different strokes and kicks 3 min. for fitness. Participants also learn sidestroke kick and work on head first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim. Swim Kids Level 9 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

Swim Kids Level 10 Length: 45 minutes Completion of Level 9

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 9, participants have a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary backstroke 50m and breast stroke 50m) and introduces sidestroke. Participants learn about sun safety, rescue of others from the ice, and head first and feet first surface dives with underwater swim. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick and a 500m swim. Swim Kids Level 10 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

WILMOT AQUATIC CENTRE How to Have Successful Swimming Lessons • Visit the pool before swimming lessons start. Give you child a tour of the facility.

• Have fun and swim with your child during a recreational swim prior to beginning lessons and practice skills they already know.

• Set realistic expectations with your child and allow your child to feel that there are no expectations to receive a badge. Swimmers often need more than one set of lessons in order to gain the skills that will allow them to complete a level.

• Make sure you bring any concerns to the instructor in a timely manner.

• If your child has a medical concern or a learning challenge, please speak to the instructor at the first lesson. This will allow us to help your child get the most out of their lesson.

Lesson Information • Please return your most recent progress card to your Swimming Instructor. These will be updated and returned on the last lesson.

• Participants will be screened on the first lesson to ensure they are enrolled in the appropriate level. If your child is enrolled in the wrong level, we will do our best to get your child into the appropriate level. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that a space in the level you require will be available during your current lesson time.

• Each swimming level has items that must be completed correctly a minimum of 3 times on separate lessons in order for that item to be complete. (According to the standards set by the Red Cross.) Attendance is important for your child’s success in the program.

Volunteers Needed!

Volunteers need to be at least 12 years of age and hold your Swim Kids 10 badge. Volunteers are required to be available for the entire session. Please complete a volunteer application form and submit it to the Customer Service Rep at the Wilmot Recreation Complex. A staff member will contact you to set up your shift.

Privates and Semi-Privates You can now Register for Privates on-line recWeb. (Semi-privates must be done in person) A private lesson may be what your child needs to complete a badge or learn a new skill. Please ensure that you speak to you child’s instructor at the start of the lesson to set-out your goals and what you are hoping to accomplish for your child.

Minimum age for private lessons is 3 years of age.

If you are interested in semi-private lessons, it is your responsibility to find the other participant. When registering for semi-private lessons and both parties do not reside in the same household, registration must be done in person and both parties must be present at the time of registration. To ensure quality instructions both participants must be in similar levels.

Semi-private lessons must be registered in person at the Wilmot Recreation Complex.

Drop-In Lessons These ½ hour classes are ideal for those swimmers 3 to 13 years who are unable to participate in the formal swimming lessons. Participants in these classes will not be working towards a swimming badge. Participants will be assigned to a class based on swim ability, beginners, shallow-water swimmers and deep-water swimmers. Spaces may be booked in advance by calling 519-634-9225. If you choose to drop in for a class, arrive early, as space is limited for each class time.

ADMISSION POLICY FOR RECREATIONAL SWIMS WAC staff members are experts trained in aquatic emergencies. They are required to supervise all patrons in the pool and cannot act in a child care capacity. Parental supervision of all children under 10 years of age is strongly recommended during all pool visits.

Children aged 7 and under and children 8 – 10 years who are weak or non- swimmers • Must be accompanied by a responsible parent or guardian 13 years of age or older who is responsible for their direct supervision. A Maximum of 2 children for each parent/ guardian • Children wearing personal flotation devices (water wings, lifejackets etc) must be supervised at all times Children aged 8 to 10 years of age who are strong swimmers • May be admitted into the pool without direct supervision provided they are able to demonstrate the ability to pass the Aquatic Swim test. This test consists of a 25 meter swim completed comfortably by the swimmer without stopping or putting their feet on the bottom • Parents/ Guardians must remain in the facility until the swim test is completed successfully. If the child is unable to complete the swim test, the Parent/ Guardian will be required to participate with the child.

WRIST BAND POLICY In conjunction with our admission policy we will be issuing wrist bands to young swimmers.

• Children 7 years of age or younger will be given a RED ribbon for their wrist. These children must be accompanied in the water at all times by a parent or guardian 13 years of age or older who must remain within arm’s reach at all times • Children 8 – 10 years of age will be given a YELLOW ribbon for their wrist if they wish to perform a swim test to see if they can swim unaccompanied. Parents or the guardian must be in the facility until the child has performed the swim test to ensure the child is able to swim alone.

• If the child passes the swim test, they can have their wrist band removed and they will be issued a swim test card. Swim Test cards must be presented to the customer service representative at each visit.

Persons who have known seizure disorders or other serious medical disorders are at greater risk while swimming. Those individuals should be accompanied and supervised by another individual knowledgeable on their condition.

AQUATICS Wilmot Aquatic Aces Swim Team Welcome to the Wilmot Aquatic ACES Club. Our programs are designed to accommodate all levels of swimmers, from “learn-to-swim” to those competing at provincial, national and international competitions. Swimmers develop skills, improve their strokes and compete in a fun yet challenging environment. The ACES are an inclusive team taking pride in our diversity in the water and on the deck! Our season run from September to June each year.

Aces Program This program is an introductory or house league level of swimming. It is geared at swimmers 3 years of age to 16 years of age who are new to swimming or just would like to stay in shape.All groups are two times per week in water. From May 9th to June 24th we offer all four levels of our ACES program. There are no meets in our Spring Session.

ACES 1: Active start is for swimmers aged 3-6 years of age. This group will meet on Wed and Fri 5:30 to 6 pm ACES 2: Fundamentals is for swimmers aged 5 to 8 years for females and 6 to 9 years for males. This group will swim Wed and Fri from 5 to 6 pm ACES 3: Learn to Train will continue to work on all four strokes while improving technique and start to work on core body strength. Ages 8 to 11 for female and 9-12 for males. This group will swim from 4-5 pm on Wed and Fri ACES 4 : Train to Train geared at 11-14 year old females and 12 to 15 year old males. This group will swim on Wed and Fri from 4 to 5 pm

Aces Rep Levels: The ACES swim in 5 levels (Bronze 1, Bronze 2, Silver 1, Silver 2 and Gold), allowing our athletes to progress to the best of their abilities and compete at various levels from introductory to national level meets.

Proper technique in all four competitive strokes, starts, turns, and streamlining skills are taught by our coaching staff.

Swimmers practice three to six days per week depending on level. These programs continue til the end of June and you can always do a trial swim at any time.

Para-Swimmers For swimmers who have intellectual or physical disabilities we have something for you as well. Wilmot Aquatic Aces proudly supports PARA-sports and was proud to have had 2012 Paralympian Michael Heath on our team.

Triathlon Training Program The ACES are very excited to have the Triathlon training program again this year. Starting the week of May 8th to June 13th. Participants will learn about swimming, biking and running. The program will run on Tues and Thurs 5:30 to 7 pm and is open to athletes 3 to 14 years of age. They will have the opportunity to register for the ACES Triathlon on May 28th, 2016 as well and put some of their training to work.

Wood Carving Grand Valley Woodcarvers Association Grand Valley Woodcarvers, a non-profit charity, was founded by a small group of enthusiastic carvers with a special interest in carving birds and wildfowl, and a dedication to promoting the art. Today, carvers meet weekly to learn and develop the skill of carving wildfowl in a variety of styles, while enjoying the fellowship of like-minded individuals. Beginners and experienced carvers work next to each other with senior carvers providing guidance and assistance to less experienced carvers and those new to the art and craft.

Agriculture Wilmot Agricultural Society Dust off your cowboy boots and come discover your country roots at the 2016 New Hamburg Fall Fair taking place the weekend of September 15-18, 2016.

This year’s theme “Cowboy Boots and Country Roots” will not disappoint! We will again be hosting the exciting Western Event on Friday night so come out and cheer on the riders and their horses. Along with this, we’ll have all the favourites back too: Toonie admission and rides on Thursday and midway passes to ride to your heart’s content on Saturday and Sunday afternoon with Townsend Amusements, our livestock competitions, horse shows, Homecraft exhibits, demolition derbys (Saturday night and Sunday afternoon) and our Ambassador of the Fair Competition on Friday night. We are bringing back the well received petting zoo and kids play area as well as some new events for ultimate family fun.

Volunteers and input are always welcome from members of our community. We love new ideas to help keep our fair fresh and fun for all! Hatha Yoga for Teens

Bootcamp is different than a gym or fitness class. We don’t use any equipment other than your own body. This means most of the drills are mainly body weight exercises like pushups, squats, lunges, planks, crunches. We throw some sprinting and jogging in for good measure and allow ample time for rest and recovery but make no mistake, you are working hard for the entire hour.

Yes it is intense but the rewards are intense as well. Each hour will consist of a warm-up, cardio-vascular training, bodyweightstrength training, flexibility and a cool down. Most participants see and feel a difference by 4-6 weeks into the program. As your strength increases so to does your ability to recover quicker.

New Hamburg Softball Association The New Hamburg Softball Association provides organized T-Ball and Softball for boys and girls aged 4 - 19.

The playing season is from early May until the end of July with all home games at Norm S. Hill Park. Volunteers are needed to coach and help with the executive.

Registration Dates will be at the Wilmot Rec Centre in February to mid-March with dates to be advertised on our website and in the New Hamburg Independent.

Please Note: In order to make sure our teams are registered in the appropriate leagues, we need all registrations for atom to midget in by March 22nd. Players will be put on a waiting list after that date.

Teams with more than 12 may require tryouts. T-Ball and coach-pitch players can register after March 22nd based on numbers.

Players need to register in their home centre first. Players not registered by March 22nd may not be eligible for releases.

Rugby Wilmot Rugby Club Where: Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School / Wilmot Recreation Complex Cost: Varies on age and length of season The Wilmot Rugby Club has three main programs for the 2016 season: Minor Rugby - This is the first year of the program. It is open for boys and girls between the ages of 3-14 (There will be several age grade teams within this range) It will be held at the Wilmot Rec Complex one to two times a week; likely Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday nights in May and June. The focus of the program is teach kids how to run, pass and catch; the very basics of game in a safe, fun and inclusive environment. Minor rugby is non-contact. The cost is likely to be under $100.

Junior Rugby – This is the fourth year of junior program. It is available for high school age boys. There are two teams within the program; U16 boys and U18 boys. Practices are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at WO. U18 games are on Wednesday evenings around 7:00pm. U16 games on Saturday mornings. The season begins mid-June of 2016.

Cost is around $200.

Wilmot Rugby Club continued Men’s Rugby – This is the fifteenth year of the men’s program.

All men eighteen years of age or older are welcome to join. The previous rugby experience is required. The season runs from May to August. Practices are Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at Waterloo-Oxford. Games are typically at Saturdays in the early afternoon. Cost will be around $330.

We’re thrilled to reboot this institution in 2015 with the Baden Road Races!

The signature distance of this event will be the 7 Miler, which this year will go up the aerial Baden Tower Hill. Runners will climb the steep gravel slope and turnaround at the top - don’t miss ringing the brass bell! The way down promises to be fun.

Also at this event are the Neil Dunford memorial 5 KM, as well as 1 KM and 200m events for children.

Independent staff Testimony of a teenager who accuses her former male teacher of touching her inappropriately is “inherently implausible” because she “lied repeatedly,” according to his defence lawyer.

Final submissions inside a Kitchener courtroom on Friday concluded the twoday trial of Ian Sommer, a Waterloo Region District School Board teacher accused of inappropriately touching a young female student back in 2013.

The teen, whose identity is being protected by a publication ban, initially told her mother that Sommer made her uncomfortable by putting his arm on her during an after-class

meeting about a school project at a Wilmot school.

Sommer was placed on home duty before returning to school several days later. He apologized to the student in front of school administration and continued to teach the student for the remainder of the school year.

Almost 17 months later, the student told staff at a summer camp that the incident also involved inappropriate touching of her breast and stomach area.

When police were contacted, she told them it was an isolated incident.

Months later, though, she changed her account to include a second occurrence.

During cross-examination on Nov. 12, the complainant told the court that

Wilmot’s Youth Action Council

Optimists’ Youth Centre

Wilmot’s Youth Action Council (Y.A.C.) is a group of local youth volunteers (ages 14 through 19) who have come together to find opportunities to become involved in the community and create a voice for the youth.

Through the involvement with the Youth Action Council, youth will learn and develop leadership, communication and organizational skills as well as provide relative input into the programs and opportunities available to youth. The Youth Action Council also aims at creating partnerships and working relationships with members of our community to create and strengthen community capacity. The Youth Action Council meets every Wednesday evening from 7:00pm-9:00pm. New Members are always Welcome Y.A.C.’s Ultimate Goal To create a self-sustaining Youth Action Council, where all youth ages 14 through 19 have a safe space to become involved members of the Community, and better themselves in the process.

Wilmot’s Jr. Youth Action Council Wilmot’s Jr. Youth Action Council is a group of local youth volunteers (ages 12 through 14) who have come together to provide an opportunity to become involved in the community and create a voice for the youth. Jr. Youth Action Council is a branch off of Wilmot’s Youth Action Council, and was designed specifically for grade 7 and 8 students whom are looking to development their leadership skills, as well creating change in their community.

Located on the upper level of the Wilmot Recreation Complex, the Optimists’ Youth Centre is a 2000 sf facility dedicated to youth (8 – 16 yrs of age) in our community.
