MUNICIPAL INFORMATION Heritage Wilmot The Heritage Wilmot Advisory Committee preserves and promotes the rich heritage of Wilmot Township.

The committee assists with designations of heritage properties, celebrates local and regional heritage days and participates in Doors Open Waterloo Region. (see page 46 for more details) www.heritagewilmot.ca

Adopt-A-Road Program The Township of Wilmot’s ADOPT-A-ROAD program has been established as a public service for volunteers to enhance the local litter collection activities of the Township of Wilmot by picking up litter along the Township road right-of-ways.

It is a way environmentally conscious citizens, community and civic organizations, private businesses, and industry can contribute to a cleaner and more beautiful road system.

Fall Leaf Collection Program

Snow Removal

The Region of Waterloo will collect bagged leaves as part of their yard waste collection program. Collection will occur in Baden, Foxboro, Haysville, Mannheim, New Dundee, New Hamburg, Petersburg, Shingletown and St. Agatha as well as other designated areas (check the collection map in your Wilmot Waste Collection Calendar).

Snow Plowing Do’s and Don’ts

Items to remember: • Collection is every second week, on your collection day. The yard waste program runs from April to November each year.

Check your collection calendar for the specific collection weeks.

• Leaves in Kraft paper bags or in garbage cans identified with a coloured ribbon or a Region of Waterloo yard waste sticker will be collected. Call the Region at 519-883-5100 to receive a free yard waste sticker.

• NO plastic bags permitted. Leaves and yard waste will not be collected if in plastic bags or cardboard boxes.

• Yard waste and leaves only. No patio stones, plastic planters, concrete, glass, plastic, rocks, tree stumps, or branches in excess of 7.5 cm (3 in.) in diameter.

• All items must be out at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day. Separate the yard waste bags from your garbage containers for easy access.

• Containers must weigh less than 23 kg (50 lbs).

• Check your waste collection calendar for more information on this and other waste management services.

Interested in alternatives to bagging your leaves?

Give your lawn and garden much needed moisture retention and nutrients by mulching your leaves. Slowly push your lawn mower a few times through dry leaves for best results.

Compost your leaves by adding small quantities to your back yard compost bin. Or prepare a separate compost heap that can produce a high quality, nutrient-rich soil amendment for your garden and flowerbeds.

1) Help Your Hydrant If your hydrant is buried by drifts or snowbanks, please dig it out or call the Public Works Department at 519-634-8444 2) Remember….You Have 24 Hours All property owners are required to remove snow and ice on the sidewalks adjacent to their property 24 hours after a winter storm ends.

3) Don’t Get the Windrow Woes We understand your frustration when you clear your driveway and then a plow comes by and leaves a pile of snow – a windrow. Unfortunately it’s impossible to plow without leaving one.

4) Overnight Parking – Winter Enforcement Parking is prohibited between 2:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. during the winter season (December 1st to March 31st). By-Law Enforcement will be actively enforcing this provision in order to alleviate any interference with winter maintenance operations.

Failure to adhere to the by-law may result in a fine or towing of your vehicle.

5) By-law 84-72 Please remember that it is illegal to deposit snow from driveways / laneways onto the road. Those found to be in contravention of the by-law may be subject to a fine up to $2,000 6) Be Patient When plowing operations begin in a snow event the plows have routes to follow that are designed to minimize duplication and maximize efficiency. Plowing operations take approximately 5 hours without an excessive amount of snow, longer with more. Sanding and salting operations commence after plowing.

7) Curbside Basketball Nets Please ensure that basketball nets are placed well away from the edge of the roadway to allow for safe and efficient plowing operations.

What is recWeb Online Registration recWeb is the online registration program for the Township of Wilmot, and can be accessed on the homepage of the township’s website, www.wilmot.ca. Registering for programs using recWeb allows users to register in advance of alternative registration methods. This process is fast, convenient and easy to use.

www.wilmot.ca Course Code The course code is a 4 digit number representing a program within the Recreation Guide. Entering the code in the search field on the recWeb website is the fastest way to locate a program.

How to Use recWeb Online Registration 1) Click the LOGIN button (top right) 2) Enter your Login ID and PIN Number 3) Click the PROGRAMS tab and enter the course code or search for a program by clicking on the Aquatics drop down menu 4) Click the ADD button to insert the program to your cart 5) For each program, select the family member you wish to register using the client drop down box 6) To register in another program or register an additional family member, click on CONTINUE SHOPPING, until you have all of the desired programs in your cart, then click on GO TO CHECKOUT 7) On the Details Screen, complete the medical information or the special needs box, if applicable. Keep Your Receipts and Get a Tax Credit for Whatever Your Child is Into Children’s Activity Tax Credit (Ontario) The Children’s Activity Tax Credit is a new, permanent refundable tax credit for parents to help with the cost of enrolling their children in eligible extracurricular activities that encourage them to be healthy and active. Parents are able to claim up to $551 of eligible expenses per child for each child under the age of 16.

Children’s Fitness Tax Credit (Federal) The Ministry of Finance has established the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit to support children’s participation in all programs that significantly contribute to their fitness. The children’s fitness tax credit will allow parents to claim a maximum of $1,000 per year for eligible fees paid for each child under 16 at any time during the year.

AQUATIC PROGRAMS Wilmot Aquatic Centre Program Information Program Assistance Wilmot Aquatic Centre will not refuse admission to our Learnto-swim programs due to lack of funds. Please contact the Aquatics Manager for more information. All inquiries are confidential. Assistance Applications must be submitted 2 weeks prior to the start date of the course.

Non-Resident/Ratepayer Fee An additional 25% will be charged to the total registration fee for participants who reside outside of Wilmot Township.

Participants who do not live in the Township but pay taxes to Wilmot Township should bring in their Tax Form when they register, to avoid paying this additional fee.

Refunds/Withdrawals Requests for refunds will be issued up to the third lesson.

A 20% administrative fee and the amount will be prorated based on the number of lessons that have passed in the session, not the number of lessons attended.

If the customer decides to leave the financial credit on their account, the 20% administrative fee will be waived. Unused credits will expire after 3 years.

Program Cancellations Please be aware, classes may be cancelled due to insufficient registration. Staff members will attempt to reach persons registered in cancelled programs by phone. Participants will be given the option to move to another time, put a credit on their account or a refund.

Absentee Policy Students must attend only the class in which they are formally registered. We regret we cannot accommodate requests for make up classes at other times.

Lessons in Leisure Pool The majority of our preschool classes are offered in the leisure pool. However lessons may be moved to the lap pool without notice.

Personal Belongings Staff are not allowed to accept personal belongings for safekeeping. All patrons are warned that valuables and belongings should not be left unattended. Take precautions by using the lockers, leaving the items at home or take the items to the deck and leave within your view. The Township of Wilmot is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Locks are available for purchase at the Customer Service Desk.

Oops, Accidents Happen !!

Pool foulings cause the pool to be closed. Please help us keep our pool germ free by: • Please don’t swim when you have diarrhea or if you feel unwell.

This is very important for children in diapers.

• Washing your body thoroughly with soap and water before entering or re-entering the pool.

• Washing your hands with soap and water after using the washroom or changing diapers.

• Do not spit in the pool. In fact, avoid getting water in your mouth.

• Feed your children at least one hour before swimming.

• Take your child to the bathroom before entering the pool, and frequently during your pool visit • Children not toilet-trained must wear swim pants made for swimming, regular diapers are not permitted. (Swim diapers are available for sale at the front desk) The pool will be closed a minimum of 1 hour for formed fecal matter and vomit and 12 hours for Diarrhea (liquid stool).

Why Become a Lifeguard?

A Lifeguard accepts enormous responsibility. They work hard to master principals and skills crucial to one of the greatest risk management challenges of organized recreation throughout the province. A lifeguard gains great skills that can be transferred to several aspects of life. Skills that a lifeguard gains are: communication, conflict resolution, responsibility, teamwork, public relations, and administration.

Requirements for Leadership Courses Please review all course requirements carefully. Candidates are required to show course instructors their original certifications cards on the first day of the program. Candidates who are unable to show proof of required certifications will not be permitted to continue with the course.

Age Requirements Many of the leadership courses have minimum age requirements. Candidates must meet the age requirements by the last day of the program. Please bring a copy of your ID to the first class as birth dates will be verified. Candidates who do not meet the age requirements will not be permitted to continue with the program.

Important Information: Upcoming Changes to the Leadership Programs The Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Instructor Development Program is changing effective January 2016.

The Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) certification will not exist under the new model and will not be transferable once the new program is implemented. Current AWSIs need to complete their Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course by December 31, 2015. As of January 1, 2016, candidates will be required to take the new WSI Course and purchase new materials.

The WSI Course is designed to provide candidates with the proper knowledge and skills to teach swimming and water safety while promoting water-safe attitudes in, on and around the water. This course will provide you with instructional knowledge and theories on topics including teaching methods, learning styles, swimming skills, communication, safety supervision, injury prevention, and feedback. The course will include a WSI - Skills Evaluation, WSI - Online, WSI - Teaching Experience, and WSI - Classroom and Pool components. Attendance 100% attendance is encouraged for the Bronze level course and mandatory for all leadership courses. Full attendance and participation increase the chance of success in the programs.

AQUACTIC PROGRAMS Red Cross Swim Preschool Program Starfish (6 to 15 months) A Parented Class STARFISH is for infants 6 to 15 months of age. Classes are 30 minutes in length and require parent participation. In this introductory class for infants (6 to 15 months) and their parent/ caregiver, participants will have the opportunity to experience buoyancy and movement through songs and play in the water. They will have the opportunity to learn front, back and vertical positions in the water and shallow water entries and exits. To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their head up. This level is participation-based only, without formal evaluation.

Duck (16 to 24 months) A Parented Class DUCK TOTS (16 to 24 months) Parented 30 min. In this beginner class for toddlers (16 to 24 months) and their parent/caregiver, participants will have the opportunity to learn rhythmic breathing, moving forward and backward, front and back float with recovery, and shallow water entries and exits. Age is the only condition for entering this level. This level is participation-based only, without formal evaluation.

Sea Turtle (25 to 36 months) A Parented Class SEA TURTLE is for toddlers 25 to 36 months of age. Classes are 30 minutes in length and require parent participation.

In this beginner class for toddlers (25 to 36 months) and their parent/caregiver, participants will have the opportunity to work on submersion, front and back floats and glides, jumping into chest-deep water with assistance, kicking on front and front swim. This level is participation based only, without formal evaluation.

Sea Otter (3 to 5 years) A Transitional Level SEA OTTER is for children 3 to 5 years of age. Classes are 30 minutes. (Transitional Class - Up to the first 4-5 Lessons Parents are in the water with the child, then for the remainder of lessons parents are in the gallery). This transition wil be monitored by the instructor and may move at a different rate than indicated. In this beginner class, preschoolers (3 to 5 years) will work towards swimming without parent participation, participants will learn to swim through fun games and songs, and the basics of front and back floats and glides, kicking on front with a buoyant object, and will be able to swim 1 meter upon completion of this level. Emphasis is on safety skills including site orientation, safe entries and exits and using a PFD. To enter this level, the preschooler must be at least 3 years of age at the start of the program.

Salamander (3 to 5 years) SALAMANDER is for children 3 to 5 years of age. Classes are 30 minutes and the class is un-parented. In this class for preschoolers (3 to 5 years), participants will work on improving their front and back float and jumping into chest-deep water unassisted. Kicking is added to the front and back glide and swimmers will be able to swim 2 meters upon completion. Emphasis is on safety skills including choosing floating objects for assistance, using a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Games and songs enhance the fun of the class. Salamander is the next progression in the Learn to Swim program, following the completion of Sea Otter or a participant that does not require the transitional class.

Sunfish (3 to 5 years) SUNFISH is for children 3 to 5 years of age.

Classes are 30 minutes.

In this class for preschoolers (3 to 5 years), participants learn to swim 5 meters, float without assistance in deep water, and jump into chest deep water while maintaining surface support for 5 seconds.

Emphasis is on safety skills including deep water skills and the use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Games and songs enhance the fun of the class. Sunfish is the next progression in the Learn to Swim program, following the completion of Salamander.

Crocodile (3 to 5 years) CROCODILE is for preschoolers 3 to 5 years of age. Classes are 30 minutes. In this class participants learn to swim 5 m on their front and back, increase their distance on front and back glide with kick to 7 m, jump into deep water, maintain surface support for 10 seconds and begin using rhythmic breathing. Emphasis is on safety skills including recognizing when a swimmer needs help. Games and songs enhance the fun of the class. Crocodile is the next progression in the Learn to Swim program, following the completion of Sunfish.

Whale (3 to 5 years) WHALE is for children 3 to 5 years of age.

Classes are 30 minutes in the Winter Session.

In this class for preschoolers (3 to 5 years), participants learn to swim 15 meters, jump into chest deep water while maintaining surface support for 20 seconds and perform a front and back swim for 10 meters. Emphasis is on safety skills including when and where to swim, sitting dives, jumping into and changing direction in deep water and throwing assists.

Games and songs enhance the fun of the class. Whale is the next progression in the Learn to Swim program, following the completion of Crocodile.

Participants must be 5 years of age or have completed the Preschool levels to move into the Swim Kids program. To move up in levels the swimmer must successfully complete the requirements of the previous level.

Swim Kids Level 1 is for children 5 years of age or for those who have completed the required preschool level. Classes are 45 minutes in length. In this class for children (5 years of age or completed preschool level) pre-participants receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats and glides. Emphasis is on building endurance by working on the 5 meter front swim. Swim Kids 1 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 1, participants work on propulsion skills to move Swim Kids Level 2 through the water. Participants work on front swim 10m, front and back glides with flutter kick, side glides and a Length: 45 minutes 5 or Completion of Level 1 roll over glide with 5 m kick. Emphasis is on weight transfer, calling EMS and creating awareness about deep water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the flutter kick 10m and a distance swim of 10m. Swim Kids Level 2 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

Swim Kids Level 3 Length: 45 minutes 5 or completion of Level 2 or Whale

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 2, participants increase their distance on front and back glide with flutter kick, perform flutter kick unassisted, wear a PFD in deep water, float in deep water, and swim 15 meters continuously. Emphasis on water safety includes when and where to swim, sitting dives and surface support for 20 seconds. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15 m swim. Swim Kids Level 3 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

Swim Kids Level 4 Length: 45 minutes Completion of Level 3

In this class, for children, who have completed Swim Kids Level 3, participants learn back swim with shoulder roll and front crawl 10 m, work on flutter kick on back, and perform kneeling dives. Participants work on surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and develop a greater sense of self safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 m swim. Swim Kids Level 4 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

Swim Kids Level 5 Length: 45 minutes Completion of Level 4

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 4, participants develop front crawl 15 m, learn back crawl 15 m and whip kick on back. Emphasis in on water safety skills including how to be a safe boater, cold water survival, stride entries and treading water for 1 minute. Endurance is developed through flutter kick 25 m and a distance swim of 50 m. Swim Kids Level 5 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

Swim Kids Level 6 Length: 45 minutes Completion of Level 5

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 5, participants increase their distance on front and back crawl 25 m, learn elementary back stroke 15 m, and learn dolphin kick. Emphasis is on water safety skills including how to be a safe boater, when and where to go on ice, throwing assist without a line, head first sculling on back 10m, and treading water 1:30 minutes and front dives. Endurance is built through a 75m swim. Swim Kids Level 6 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

Swim Kids Level 7 Length: 45 minutes Completion of Level 6

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 6, participants build skills and endurance for the front crawl 50m, back crawl 50m and elementary backstroke 25m and are introduced to whip kick on the front 15 m. Participants learn about airway and breathing obstructions and participate in reaching assists with rescue equipment. Swimming endurance is increased by completion of a 150m swim. Swim Kids Level 7 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

Swim Kids Level 8 Length: 45 minutes Completion of Level 7

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 7, participants will increase their distance on front and back crawl 75m, and elementary back stroke 25m. Participants will learn breast stroke 15m, eggbeater/tread water, and perform feet first surface dives and standing shallow dives. Emphasis is on water safety including hypothermia and the dangers of open water. Swimming endurance is increased to 300m. Swim Kids Level 8 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

Swim Kids Level 9 Length: 45 minutes Completion of Level 8

Swim Kids Level 10 Length: 45 minutes Completion of Level 9

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 8, participants refine the front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary backstroke 50m and breaststroke 25m, encouraging participants to combine different strokes and kicks 3 min. for fitness. Participants also learn sidestroke kick and work on head first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim. Swim Kids Level 9 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

In this class, for children who have completed Swim Kids Level 9, participants have a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary backstroke 50m and breast stroke 50m) and introduces sidestroke. Participants learn about sun safety, rescue of others from the ice, and head first and feet first surface dives with underwater swim. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick and a 500m swim. Swim Kids Level 10 uses continuous evaluation for participants to progress.

WILMOT AQUATIC CENTRE How to Have Successful Swimming Lessons • Visit the pool before swimming lessons start. Give you child a tour of the facility.

• Have fun and swim with your child during a recreational swim prior to beginning lessons and practice skills they already know.

• Set realistic expectations with your child and allow your child to feel that there are no expectations to receive a badge. Swimmers often need more than one set of lessons in order to gain the skills that will allow them to complete a level.

• Make sure you bring any concerns to the instructor in a timely manner.

• If your child has a medical concern or a learning challenge, please speak to the instructor at the first lesson. This will allow us to help your child get the most out of their lesson.

Lesson Information • Please return your most recent progress card to your Swimming Instructor. These will be updated and returned on the last lesson.

• Participants will be screened on the first lesson to ensure they are enrolled in the appropriate level. If your child is enrolled in the wrong level, we will do our best to get your child into the appropriate level. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that a space in the level you require will be available during your current lesson time.

• Each swimming level has items that must be completed correctly a minimum of 3 times on separate lessons in order for that item to be complete. (According to the standards set by the Red Cross.) Attendance is important for your child’s success in the program.

Privates and Semi-Privates You can now Register for Privates on-line recWeb. (Semi-privates must be done in person) A private lesson may be what your child needs to complete a badge or learn a new skill. Please ensure that you speak to you child’s instuctor at the start of the lesson to set-out your goals and what you are hoping to accomplish for your child.

Minimum age for private lessons is 3 years of age.

If you are interested in semi-private lessons, it is your responsibility to find the other participant. When registering for semi-private lessons and both parties do not reside in the same household, registration must be done in person and both parties must be present at the time of registration. To ensure quality instructions both participants must be in similar levels.

Semi-private lessons must be registered in person at the Wilmot Recreation Complex. Privates and semi-privates must be prepaid and are subject to the absentee policy. **If all private spots are full and you are still interested in a lesson, please contact the Wilmot Recreation Centre and we can add you to waiting list.

Drop-In Lessons These 1/2 hour classes are ideal for those swimmers 3 to 13 years who are unable to participate in the formal swimming lessons. Participants in these classes will not be working towards a swimming badge. Participants will be assigned to a class based on swim ability, beginners, shallow-water swimmers and deep-water swimmers. ADMISSION POLICY FOR RECREATIONAL SWIMS WAC staff members are experts trained in aquatic emergencies. They are required to supervise all patrons in the pool and cannot act in a child care capacity. Parental supervision of all children under 10 years of age is strongly recommended during all pool visits.

Children aged 7 and under and children 8 – 10 years who are weak or non- swimmers • Must be accompanied by a responsible parent or guardian 13 years of age or older who is responsible for their direct supervision. A Maximum of 2 children for each parent/ guardian • Children wearing personal flotation devices (water wings, lifejackets etc) must be supervised at all times Children aged 8 to 10 years of age who are strong swimmers • May be admitted into the pool without direct supervision provided they are able to demonstrate the ability to pass the Aquatic Swim test. This test consists of a 25 meter swim completed comfortably by the swimmer without stopping or putting their feet on the bottom • Parents/ Guardians must remain in the facility until the swim test is completed successfully. If the child is unable to complete the swim test, the Parent/ Guardian will be required to participate with the child.

WRIST BAND POLICY In conjunction with our admission policy we will be issuing wrist bands to young swimmers.

• Children 7 years of age or younger will be given a RED ribbon for their wrist. These children must be accompanied in the water at all times by a parent or guardian 13 years of age or older who must remain within arm’s reach at all times • Children 8 – 10 years of age will be given a YELLOW ribbon for their wrist if they wish to perform a swim test to see if they can swim unaccompanied. Parents or the guardian must be in the facility until the child has performed the swim test to ensure the child is able to swim alone.

• If the child passes the swim test, they can have their wrist band removed and they will be issued a swim test card. Swim Test cards must be presented to the customer service representative at each visit.

• If they do not pass the swim test, they will be issued a RED ribbon for their wrist and will be required to swim within arm’s reach of a parent or guardian 13 years of age or older who is in the pool.

“Direct supervision” is defined as being in the water and able to render immediate assistance.

Persons who have known seizure disorders or other serious medical disorders are at greater risk while swimming. Those individuals should be accompanied and supervised by another individual knowledgeable on their condition.

AQUATICS Wilmot Aquatic Aces Swim Team

ACES REP LEVELS

Welcome to the Wilmot Aquatic ACES Club. Our programs are designed to accommodate all levels of swimmers, from “learn-to-swim” to those competing at provincial, national and international competitions. Swimmers develop skills, improve their strokes and compete in a fun yet challenging environment. The ACES are an inclusive team taking pride in our diversity in the water and on the deck! All levels have some competitions. The level of competition is determined by the level the swimmer is in. The best way to see the improvement is to watch the child swim at a meet.

Our season run from September to June each year.

The ACES swim in 5 levels (Bronze 1, Bronze 2, Silver 1, Silver 2 and Gold), allowing our athletes to progress to the best of their abilities and compete at various levels from introductory to national level meets. This program runs from Sept 21st to end of June.

Proper technique in all four competitive strokes, starts, turns, and streamlining skills are taught by our coaching staff.

Swimmers practice three to six days per week depending on level. All levels will have a dryland class as well. Allowing the ACES to continue developing a positive role in the health and well being of our youth.

ACES program: This program is an introductory or house league level of swimming. It is geared at swimmers 3 years of age to 16 years who are new to swimming or just want to say in shape. All groups are two times per week in water. This year all groups have an opportunity to participate in dryland training as well.

The program runs from Sept 21 to May 8th.

ACES 1:

Active Start is for swimmers aged 3- 6 years of age. The main goal of the program is to build self confidence and positive self esteem while teaching the fundamentals of swimming.

This group does not compete in swim meets

ACES 2: Fundamentals is for swimmers aged 5 to 8 for

females and 6 to 9 for males. The main goals are to develop all four strokes, start some aerobic conditioning, work on coordination and the basics of dryland training. This group will compete in Aqua 7 meets only

ACES 3: Learn to Train will continue to work on all four strokes while improving technique, and start to work on core body strength and speed work.

Ages: 8 to 11 year old females and 9-12 year old males. This group also includes the opportunity to do a dryland class once a week. This level will compete in Aqua 7 meets and two invitationals ACES 4: Train to Train is geared at the 11-14 year old female

and 12 to 15 year old male. (plus or minus 2 years) This group is perfect for the swimmer who doesn’t have a lot of time but still wants to improve in the sport of swimming. This group will compete in Aqua 7 meets and two Invitational meets.

Masters This program is for mature swimmers, 18 years and older who wish to swim for exercise & conditioning. All four strokes will be covered. Participants may choose to compete at Masters meets.

The program is offered 5 days a week with your choice of one to five sessions per week (1 hour per session).

Para-Swimmers For swimmers who have intellectual or physical disabilities we have something for you as well. Wilmot Aquatic Aces proudly supports PARA-sports and was proud to have had 2012 Paralympian Michael Heath on our team.

Triathlon Leading up to our annual hosted triathlon in late May, the ACES will be offering triathlon training to teach the basics of the sport to young athletes ages 3 to 14 beginning in May, 2016. Please watch our website for more information on this exciting event.

New Hamburg Firebirds Jr. C Hockey The New Hamburg Firebirds are looking forward to an exciting 2015-2016 season. Their home games are Friday and Saturday nights, start time 7:30 at the Wilmot Recreation Complex.

Season Passes are available for $50 each, which allows you to watch your hometown Junior C Firebirds play for less than $2.00 per game. Kids 13 and under are only $25 The Firebirds are always welcoming new volunteers and additional executive members to help out the team with various duties.

NEW! Daytime Bootcamp Bootcamp is different than a gym or fitness class. We don’t use any equipment other than your own body. This means most of the drills are mainly body weight exercises like pushups, squats, lunges, planks, crunches. We throw some sprinting and jogging in for good measure and allow ample time for rest and recovery but make no mistake, you are working hard for the entire hour. Yes, it is intense but the rewards are intense as well. Each hour will consist of a warm-up, cardiovascular training, bodyweight-strength training, flexibility and a cool down. Most participants see and feel a difference by 4-6 weeks into the program. As your strength increases, so to does your ability to recover quicker. Incremental increases of difficulty will take place and by the time all of your sessions are finished you will be ready to attack the next round!

Painting Like Picasso

Zumba® Kids are designed exclusively for kids ages 4-12 to combine movement, music and community in a class for children. This class is a rockin’, high-energy dance parties packed with specially choreographed, kid-friendly routines and all the music kids love, like hip-hop, reggaeton, cumbia and more. Zumba® Kids inspires kids to express themselves through movement and play while effectively improving their overall health and well-being. The week will fly by as we travel through time looking at the earliest flying machines right up to modern day rocket launches.

We’ll cover it all. Become a Junior Aviator and discover the principals of flight and aerodynamics. Zip up your space suit for a planetary tour while we investigate the wonders of our very own Milky Way. Join your fellow astronauts as we send an awesome Mad Science rocket to the moon…well at least into the sky! As Mad Science Technicians, you will build sundials, telescopes, parachutes and an incredible wind tunnel simulator.

It will be a blast! Daily themes include: The Wright Stuff, It’s An Up Thing!, the Milky Way, Newtons Loco-“Motion and Rockin’ Rockets.

Program Instructors Required The Township Of Wilmot is currently seeking program instructors to instruct the following programs for the Spring and Summer sessions: Music Classes • Fitness Classes • Drama/Theatre Program Instructing opportunities are available on a contract basis and primarily involve providing instruction for evening, weekend and some daytime courses.

To be considered all instructors must have certification (where applicable) and training in the specific discipline; be able to demonstrate experience providing instruction within a program setting; possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills; have current Standard First Aid and C.P.R. certification (or be willing to obtain one at your own expense within six months); and are required to provide both a Police Records Check and a Vulnerable Sector Check as the programs being offered may involve youth and seniors. Hiking The Avon Trail The Avon Trail is a charitable organization that conducts hikes and co-ordinates the development and maintenance of a 100 kilometre hiking trail. The Avon Trail runs from St. Marys to Conestogo, crossing Wilmot Township. Much of the route crosses over private land thanks to the kind permission of landowners. All hikers are obliged to observe the “Trail User’s Code” and use the trail at their own risk. Members receive our newsletters and schedule of hikes and activities. Agriculture Wilmot Agricultural Society Watch for the New Hamburg Fall Fair the weekend of September 17 – 20, 2015. The year our theme is “Celebrating 100 Years of 4-H in Ontario”. Many things remain the same: Toonie admission and rides on Thursday and midway passes to ride to your heart’s content on Saturday and Sunday afternoon with Townsend Amusements. As always, we will have our livestock competitions, horse shows, Homecraft exhibits, demolition derby’s (Saturday night and Sunday afternoon) and our Ambassador of the Fair Competition on Friday night. We are bringing back the well received petting zoo and kids play area as well as some new events for ultimate family fun!

Volunteers and input are always welcome from members of our community. We love new ideas to help keep our fair fresh and fun for all! No need to join the board to volunteer with the fair – just contact us with your talents and interests and we’ll find you the perfect spot to fit your own schedule. Wilmot Township Rod & Gun Club of 2607 Bleams Road , Baden, was organized in 1950. The Club’s objectives are to promote general knowledge of firearms and the safe handling of guns and ammunition along with promoting the conservation of fish, wildlife, forests, and sportsmanship.

The Club Activities: Trap Shooting on Sunday mornings at 9:30a.m., all new comers are welcome, no previous experience is required as we are willing to teach the game of Trap Shooting.

Mixed Darts on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. from November to April Mixed Horseshoes on Thursday nights at 7:00 p.m. from June to September.

The Club also has Archery, Social functions, and Picnic area.

Children meet in our childcare area which is divided into age groups for fun and learning. Song and story time are also a regular part of children`s program. There is a full staff on duty taking care of the children and their needs.

It’s hard to believe in less than a decade we have moved towards a multi-use facility that houses 2 NHL sized Ice Pads; an 8-lane 25m Lap Pool and a 20m by 20m warm water leisure pool with accessible features; an indoor 4-lane walking/running track; 4 multi-purpose rooms; a Dryland Training Room; a Youth Centre; and an Active Living Centre for seniors. The Complex also has full and mini size soccer fields, the Kids Play Zone Accessible Playground and is home to the Wilmot Splash Pad which opened in June!

Visit the Customer Service Desk at WRC to rent a pair of Walking Poles FREE of charge! We will exchange a pair of poles for your keys or a piece of Photo Identification.

Rules: 1. Poles are for use at the Wilmot Recreation Complex ONLY. 2. Poles are to be returned after your use.

Optimist Club of Wilmot The Optimist Club of Wilmot is an all ladies’ club striving to provide opportunities for the residents of the township with special emphasis on the youth of the community.

Optimist Club of Mannheim The Mannheim Optimist Club provides many activities that benefit youth in our community. An Easter Egg Hunt, Fishing Derby, Pumpkin Carving Contest, Young Person of the Year award, a Children’s Christmas Party and a Youth Sports Night (soccer and baseball) every Tuesday night during May and June.

Our two annual fundraisers help sponsor these events: the “May Day Sale” is a community yard sale, held the first Saturday in May and the Community Pig and Corn Roast which is held the third Saturday in September.

The playing season is from early May until the end of July with all home games at Norm S. Hill Park. Volunteers are needed to coach and help with the executive.

Registration Dates will be at the Wilmot Rec Centre in February to mid-March with dates to be advertised on our website and in the New Hamburg Independent.

Please Note: In order to make sure our teams are registered in the appropriate leagues, we need all registrations for atom to midget in by March 22nd. Players will be put on a waiting list after that date.

Teams with more than 12 may require tryouts. T-Ball and coach-pitch players can register after March 22nd based on numbers.

Players need to register in their home centre first. Players not registered by March 22nd may not be eligible for releases.

Baden Minor Softball Association The Baden Minor Softball Association offers T-Ball, Coach Pitch and Softball for boys and girls ages 4 - 18.

The Nith Valley Sno Surfers, a member club of both the Golden Triangle Snowmobile Association and the OFSC, are a volunteer based organization with the goals of providing and promoting the sport of snowmobiling within Baden, New Hamburg and the surrounding areas.

Working with the area’s landowners and businesses we endeavour to provide an extensive, safe and enjoyable trail system for both the local snowmobiling enthusiasts and visitors to the area.

Our social activities include dances, poker runs and fundraising for local charities. Our clubhouse is open to everyone through the winter season.

Wilmot Jujitsu abides by the traditional values of Jujitsu, where the passing of knowledge of the art is of primary importance.

We believe that the true values of Jujitsu transcend its technical aspects of training; more important are the developments of mental and moral characteristics such as: Patience, Courage, Self Control, Self Confidence and Humility.

At Wilmot Jujitsu we practice the following arts: Shinki Ryu Jujitsu, Genbukan Ninpo (tai jutsu), International Motobu Ha Shito Ryu Karate, and Hiden Mugai Ryu Iaido.

Shinki Ryu Jujitsu is an effective self defense system and is the foundation of what is taught. It is designed to enhance the confidence of the practitioner while training in a friendly, relaxed and non-competitive atmosphere. Advanced Practitioners are allowed to train in both Karate/Kobujutsu and Iaido/Kenjutsu.

Genbukan Ninpo is offered to advanced students of Shinki Ryu or to students that are specifically interested in Genbukan Ninpo. Ninpo Bugei focuses on teaching the illumination, awareness and defense of mind, body and spirit. It is the essence of traditional Ninjutsu techniques. This is restricted to adult students ages 14 and up.

Wilmot’s Youth Action Council

Optimists’ Youth Centre

Wilmot’s Youth Action Council (Y.A.C.) is a group of local youth volunteers (ages 14 through 19) who have come together to find opportunities to become involved in the community and create a voice for the youth.

Through the involvement with the Youth Action Council, youth will learn and develop leadership, communication and organizational skills as well as provide relative input into the programs and opportunities available to youth. The Youth Action Council also aims at creating partnerships and working relationships with members of our community to create and strengthen community capacity. The Youth Action Council meets every Wednesday evening from 7:00pm-9:00pm. New Members are always welcome.

First meeting is to be held on Wednesday September 9th, 2015.

Located on the upper level of the Wilmot Recreation Complex, the Optimists’ Youth Centre is a 2000 sf facility dedicated to youth (8 – 16 yrs of age) in our community.

The Centre, which will be operated in partnership by the Township of Wilmot’s Facilities & Recreation Services Department and Wilmot Family Resource Centre, will provide a space for youth to gather, socialize, and play games in a safe, non-threatening, supervised environment. The Centre is equipped with a pool table, air hockey table, large flat screen TV and gaming system.

Programming at the Optimists’ Youth Centre is proudly supported by the Optimist Clubs of New Hamburg and Petersburg.

Each course is held on two consecutive Saturdays and includes training for rescue breathing, artificial respiration and choking.

YOUTH Youth Programs Trinity Youth Group TYGers is a program which offers teenaged youth (Junior TYGers - Grade 6-9; Senior TYGers - Grade 9 and up) the opportunity to participate in a variety of wholesome social activities â&#x20AC;&#x201C; bowling, movies, carolling and the like. Parents assist with the transportation and participate as necessary. Hosted

by Trinity Church, the program is open to all teenaged youth.

Program costs, if any, vary with activity. No one is ever excluded because of financial circumstance.

Senior Youth Wilmot Centre Missionary Church Senior Youth is a place where anyone in high school come together to do some crazy events, grow with God, go on missions trips and discover who you are.

Our purpose is to help create holistic relationships with God and others.

Our goal is to create a place where you can meet people, make friends, grow with God, have a place to be real with others and grow in each area of your life.

New Hamburg Youth Darts When: Saturday mornings 9am - 11 am Where: Royal Canadian Legion, 65 Boullee Street, New Hamburg Cost: $50.00 We run a great darts program for youth ages 10-18.

Each week we play games and work on dart skills. Our youth take part in 2 tournaments a year. We have some competitors that go to the Provincial level each year.
