Embracing Your Feal-s KenjiEndoll4 ___

Freelance Columnist & News Editor It is completely dark except for the flickering light from my laptop. I am alone in an empty house. I hear a sound from the kitchen. I know it's my rabbit prancing around or running into a wall or something, but my brain jumps to the obvious conclusion, "Ahhhhh! It's an intruder! Arm yourself!" Fear begins to overwhelm me. I run around my room trying to find possible weapons to use against an assailant. My best options are either a ukulele or a Vuvuzela, so I'm toast. Then I start to panic and fear engulfs me until the miniscule, rational part of my brain is able to tell the rest of my body that it's all okay. Then I open my laptop, blast `happy music,' and everything is okay. As a little kid, I was scared of everything. I cried during Casper and Stuart Little and had to be taken out of the movie theater during Monsters Inc. The dark was a fear that pervaded my childhood. I could not fall asleep without my light on until middle school . When I was little , I would wake up screaming in the middle of the night because I swore I saw ghosts peak their translucent heads out of my closet. I would only sleep with my head facing away from the closet doors , because that was where the scary monsters from Monsters Inc. would emerge to turn my screams into fuel for Monstropolis. If I got up in the middle of the night, I would take a flying leap that would make even a kangaroo proud. That way, the monsters wouldn't be able to grab my ankles and pull me into their lair. In the fourth grade, I was convinced that if I sang, the king monster from the colony in my basement would come and take me to be his court jester. So I began to sing really horribly on purpose, intensifying my pre-existing lack of musical talent, to scare him away. Then I realized he might actually like bad singing because he was -you know- a monster. I stopped singing altogether. I like to think I am a bit more rational now, but I occasionally still face the same old fears from childhood. Sometimes I wake up from a nightmare of a faceless demon chasing me down the block, (sadly, my years of cross-country never seem to translate to any practical use in my dreams) , and, for a split-second, I stare into the darkness of my room and have to tell myself it all isn't real. Looking back, I do not think I was ever really afraid of the dark itself. I think I was affaid of the unknown. Not knowing what was out there, what was or was not right in front of me was terrfying. It still terrifies me. I fear the unknown. I fear not knowing what the future holds . I fear not knowing if I will succeed or fall, or even what succeeding means. I simply fear not knowing. So how does one get over a fear? A wikiHow page, "How to Overcome Fear", gives a twelve suggestions to help you overcome your fear. Some of these gems include the "Fun Method," which urges you to "print out a picture of it, punch it, kick it!" or the "Forget Method," in which you tell

yourfriendsaboutyourfearandthenjustdon'ttalkaboutit.Butreally, howdoyouovercomefear?I remember something Jack said to Kate in the first season of Losf , telling her how he panicked during a surgery: "So I just made a choice. I let the fear in, let it take over; let it do its thing, but only for 5 seconds. That's all I was going to give it. So I started to count,1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Then it was gone. I went back to work, sewed her up and she was fine." Okay fine. It's from Lest, but I still think it is a valid idea. It is impossible to outrun a fear for your entire life. If faced with it,let it in; let it engulf you, but only for five seconds. Then tell it to get lost -no pun intended... Whether it is spiders, clowns, heights, or vegetables, everyone has their fears: their own

personal Everest to overcome. Whether it is Elliot Reid's petrifying fear of redheads on Scrwbs, junior Meredith Erskine's all-too-real fear of bananas , sophomore Ellie MCGinnis 's childhood fear of cows , or my own fear of the dark and the unknown , we all have something to overcome . So don't run from it, let it come to you. And when it does come to you, punch it, kick it, and beat that sucker up (metaphorically, of course). Or, you can just flick a switch and turn on the lights.

Kick Back, Relax, and Take a Gap Year E'6 Emily Beckwith Featul-es Writer '13 As our high school years fly by, the college process will soon begin. My question is: what is the rush? After high school, many students feel obliged to immediately begin college, but when will you have time to relax? From high school to college, there is no time to unwind and experience new things . Talcing a gap year allows this to happen ! The idea of a gap year may seem very alien to us, though it is a fantastic opportunity to experience the world and to discover new things. There are numerous activities to partake in during a

gap year, and what you lean and experience will enrich your life and your leaming forever. Travelling is the most popular gap year activity. Visiting new places is a key way tobroadenyourknowledgeandunderstandingofdifferent cultures. Whether it is backpacking across Europe or an African safin , travelling provides an opportunity for new experiences and can be incredibly eye opening. When is a better time to travel than before college? If you begin school immediately after graduation , you will have little or no time to travel until you have a comfortable job and a stable income. Who knows how long that will take? A gap year provides the perfect time frame to travel and lean new things that will advance your knowledge of the world as well as your self understanding. If travelling seems too adventurous, there is always something to do during a gap year that is closer to home. One activity could be an internship at an office. If you're interested in law or politics, interning at a law firm or a senator's office would be beneficial, and it would look great on your r6sum6. Having such an experience would really increase your understanding in a particular field, and it would definitely help you in college and in future jobs . For the lazy among us , you do not have to take a busy gap year; a gap year can be a time to relax. Senior year is hectic due to all the various tests and applications, so having a whole year off before college can eliminate all the stresses from the previous school year. A calming gap

year may allow you to think, and discover what you really want to do. The problem with going straight to college is that adulthood is always looming ahead of us. As soon as college finishes , responsibility awaits and getting a job is

top priority. During this period there is no time to relax or take time off, therefore a gap year is perfect. English teacher Brandon Woods took a gap year before beginning college. Woods claims that the time off was beneficial: "The time off was tremendously helpful for me. It gave me time to mature intellectually and emotionally. I spent the time traveling through Europe, working for the ISO (International Socialist Organization) , and , subsequently, the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago . Very few things better promote rapid maturation than being forced to provide one's own sustenance". The gap year allowed Brandon Woods to mature, and Woods believes that a gap year is very helpful towards

gaining independence and maturing: "As important as leaning financial independence is, and this may sound counter intuitive, the time away from school gave me the opportunity to read more and think harder than I ever could have imagined. Don't get me wrong, while college is an efficacious and increasingly necessary step toward financial independence and responsible citizenship, its structure can hamper independent thought, particularly for those students who are not mature enough to navigate the institution". A gap year is a perfect time to grow and become ready for college. College seems daunting, and so a gap year is a way of discovering yourself and the world before your college experience. If you are on the fence about college, or what exactly you want to study, a gap year is perfect, as during the year you can make a decision and discover new things that will help you decide. Another benefit of a gap year is that it is a perfect opportunity to retake certain exams . The 18 exams are a major part to both the junior and senior

year, and this year off will allow you to retake them if you didn't get your desired grade the first time around. The possibilities are truly endless with a gap year. A gap year is a perfect time to discover yourself and the opportunities surrounding us . The time off allows you to experience new and exciting things that will create memories that will last a lifetime. We have so little time to enjoy ourselves fully, and so we must grasp every opportunity that falls into our hands. There is no rush to

go to college, so why shouldn't you take advantage of the free time you have?

According to Bill Baczkowski,Assisstant Head for Finance and Operation , the school is still in the process of working out the logistics of the renovations: ``All renovations involving the fire area are to be determined. The school has engaged an architect, and there is a committee considering various different options; however, there is nothing set in stone. "The school has worked with Voith and MacTavish before," says Judy Aliquo, the Director of Developement and a main participant in the rebuilding project. "About eight years ago, Voith and MacTavish created a master plan for the school, laying out all of the usable space on the Friends' campus. They also helped in converting the old meeting room into the art room." According to Aliquo, a committee of Friends school faculty and staff met with the architects about two weeks ago. Scandals Ruin Toui-de France popularity? Zack Lessner '13

Sports Writer The 99th Tour de France is set to occur this July as the most skilled cyclists in the world gather in France to distinguish the best of the best. This year's tour will be short of some of the big names in biking, such as Alberto Contador and Lance Armstrong, but the competition will still be there nonetheless. SinceLanceArmstrong'ssecondretirementtwoyears ago , interest in the Tour has dropped considerably. Due to doping scandals and the lack of a dominant biker, many viewers have lost interest in the Tour de France. Many people missed out on a very exciting Tour de France finish last year; they lost interest because it was Lance Amstrong's first year of his second retirement. Even the common sports fan most likely has no recollection of the winner from last year's Tour since his name is not Lance Armstrong. Cadel Evans became the oldest cyclist at 34 and first Australian ever to win the Tour after closely beating runner-up Andy Schleck. Evans took his first lead in the race during the competition's last individual time trial, and his overall win is considered to be one of Australia's greatest sporting achievements. The reigning champion will be looking for more glory in this year's Tour, but some of his competitors will be left off the list of cyclists because of their doping scandals. Most notably, three time `champ' and last year's fifth

place finisher, Alberto Contador, will not be participating because he was on a positive test list in September 2010. The ruling for his punishment was that he was to be stripped of his 2010 title and suspended for the next two Tours. Contador blames the incident on `contaminated meat'. Interest has dropped considerably in the sport's viewing. This is due to the public knowledge that

performance enhancing substances can move the average bikers up to the top. Nobody likes knowing in the back of their minds that a sport's greatest athletes could in fact be cheaters . After pleading for several years that he was innocent, 2006 Tour winner Floyd Landis finally admitted in 2010 that he had taken multiple illegal substances that boosted his performance. Also, he accused Lance Armstrong of doping when they were teammates in 2002 and 2003. Armstrong, however, has never been sanctioned for any of these allegations. Although the 2012 Tour has ridded the cyclists who

have taken illegal substances, riders who we may know as innocent now may later turn out to have scandals of their own. In a sport whose top athlete list keeps getting thinner and thinner, biking cannot afford for their riders to continue getting caught taking drugs. If the Tour de France officials want to improve its ratings, they need to somehow find a way to make the sport more interesting to follow. Jack Hall ' 13 does not have an interest in the Tour because, ``The Tour de France does not have anything entertaining to follow." Gaining interest in the Tour starts with making sure that athletes are likable people, and are not ever questioned for having cheated. If viewers know that they are watching a fair competition, they will be more inclined to invest their attention . When asked whether he would be watching this year's Tour de France, Josh Schwartz ' 12 responded by saying, "Lance Armstrong or no Lance Amstrong, I will not be watching this year's Tour de France." Biking's lack of viewing popularity, unlike that of many popular sports, keeps its interest at the minimal for average sports fans. The 2012 Tour de France is sure to be at the same level of excitement as a year ago, and it would be a bad decision for sports fans to miss watching cycling at its highest stage. Hopefully biking will once again return to its popularity from the Armstrong years, so that the clean cyclists like Cadel Evans can be truly appreciated.

The very act of listening to the song could be considered an experience itself. "Fire" is a funky tune, featuring a mesmerizing R&B flavor. Hendrix belts out, "I have only one burning desire: let me stand next to your fire." Though Hendrix sings of intense love, the WFS students know similar passion: the joy of no school, the pain of doing make-up work, and the agony of not finding a parking spot. Classic rock truly celebrates the `Fire Days' like no other. These songs do not advocate for acts of arson, but rather critique society.
