The Pi-esidential Race Reaches the Final Stretch Annie MCDonough '13 Co-Editor-in-Chief Barack Obama is a Socialist who believes that small business owners did not build their success . Mitt Romney is a devious businessman who drove for twelve hours with his Irish setter strapped to the roof of his car. If you're just tuning into the presidential election , this is likely the kind of rhetoric you are exposed to. Chris Matthews and Bill O'Reilly bombard you with these sound bytes on a twentyfour hour news cycle. Or maybe they convince you that the incumbent's performance at the next presidential debate in Florida will make or break his bid for re-election . Perhaps they say that the two points Mr. Romney just gained in the polls are indicative of his approaching victory. Dear Oneltolone: It Wasn't You; It was Me Sophie Mester '13 Co-Editor-ih-Chief From the minute I heard the term "One-to-One", I was silently opposed. I hated the idea of every student being required to caITy a laptop around from class to class, typing out notes and reading from a screen. Did I really have to get a whole new laptop when I already had a perfectly functioning one? What if I drop it while carrying it around everywhere? Could I no longer write out my own notes the old-fashioned way with a pen and paper? Is anyone going to pay attention anymore, or are we all just going to check Facebook the entire class? When the plans for the one-to-one prograln were finalized and announced last year, I groaned inwardly but went on with my life, never bothering to get the answers to those lingering questions . And when it came time for me to come into school at eight o'clock in the moming on an August day and pass some sort of test to actually get this much anticipated and discussed laptop, I decided that One-to-One had ruined my life. I somehow passed the test and was sent home with a new laptop. I now had another dilemma to complain about: how should I decide when to use my school laptop and when to use my personal one? Should I put all my music on my school laptop? What about my thousands of photos? Could I sync my ipod to both computers? These were the grave first world problems that I had to take on. This One-to-One program had introduced a whole new dimension of adversity into my life. I soon discovered the miracle of "home sharing", and tried once more to move on with my life. It wasn't easy, but I somehow developed a system to help me detemine what belongs on my personal computer and what belongs on my school one. Despite the hardships imposed upon me by the One-to-One program , I managed to survive the summer and make it back to school in September. I began to notice the use of my school computer slowly increased, while my personal laptop sat on my desk, remaining untouched for days at a time. Then, one recent October day, something strange happened. I did the unthinkable: I accidentally left my One-to-One laptop at home. Instead of feeling relieved from the burden of my laptop and loving the break my arms were getting from having to tote it around school, I missed it. I missed it badly. And to make matters worse, I had two long-block frees that day. I made a decision that I would not have believed just a few weeks earlier: I left school during my free to drive 20 minutes roundtrip to my house just to pick up my laptop. As I returned to school and settled into a comfy couch in Kathleen's room to get some work done on my laptop, I finally admitted to myself that I love that little machine. It wasn't the program itself, but my opposition to change that kept me from embracing just how awesome the One-to-One program really is. Not only does my laptop make my frees a thousand times more productive, but it really has helped to enrich class discussion and make pulling up information quickly a simple task. Some classes , however, remain virtually unchanged by the Oneto-One program, and that is probably for the best. Instead of completely revolutionalizing the way classes are run, as I had initially feared, the laptops have simply served as an additional (and so far, useful) resource. So I want to say I am sony, One-to-One . I admit I judged you way too soon. Now my biggest concern isn't how to deal with you and your cumbersome ways, but how I'm going to part with you come graduation.

The girls from Figure Skating in Harlem perform on the ice . In a tradition that dates back to 1960, the Friends Alumni Board annually honored an extraordinary Friends school graduate with the prestigious Alumni of the Year Award. This award recognized both the career achievements and commitment to service of an alumna or alumnus. Eventually, however, a single award no longer sufficed. In 2010, the
program was restructured so as to allow for more alumni to be recognized for their widespread accomplishments. The three new awards are the Distinguished Service Award, Outstanding Service Award, and Young Alumni of the Year Award. This year, the Friends Alumni Board presents Sharon Cohen, class of 1984, with the Distinguished Service Award. This award recognizes a graduate who has achieved a distinctive level of excellence in the areas of professional, personal, and community life. Cohen is the founder and executive director of Figure Skating in Harlem, an organization established in 1997 that works to empower, educate, and provide a support system for young women living in Harlem. TheprogramstartedshortlyafterCohengraduated fromcollege.UpongraduatingfromBrownuniversity, Cohen moved to New York to work for CBS News. While working there, a group of girls from Harlem approached her, expressing their desire to leam how to figure skate. Knowing how expensive the sport could be, Cohen, who grew up in the world of competitive skating, decided to start a program teaching kids from lower income families how to skate competitively. Over the past fifteen years, Figure Skating in Harlemhasgrowntoincludecoursesinnutrition, public speaking, counseling, leadership, careerandacademic seminars, andfieldtrips.Theprogrameffectivelykeeps the girls active in their schoolwork and away from the dangers that many Harlem adolescents encountersuch as teem pregnancy, crime, and childhood obesity. Cohen, who is constantly busy working with her program, was kind enough to answer a few questions for us here at Friends. Hopefully, we can all learn from her honorable efforts.
"lh/hile at Friends I learned the secret to "service."
It isn't just for the good of those being served. It provides tremendous gifts to those giving the service as well. I love running Figure Skating in Harlem because I get to see so many personal transformations. Our students grow through our educational and fitness
programs to become strong, confident leaders. I know they will make their mark on the world. My Friends School experience also exposed me to the Quaker values of tolerance, social justice, and being your brother's (sister's) keeper. These are some of the underpinning and enduring values of my organization. It is how we have created a culture of success for hundreds of girls who come from some of the most underserved communities in New York City and are now flourishing in school and beyond. ``
What do you hope you are accomplishing through this program? We are changing lives. At its heart, we are building a community of young, healthy leaders who have the skills and foundation to accomplish their dreams. We do this by combining the power of education and the discipline of skating to help girls achieve academic success, physical health and emotional well being. Because our focus is education and fitness, we have students that have been with us for 8-10 year and then go on to succeed in college and the workplace. They will always enjoy skating, but the skills they leaned in our program will last a lifetime.
Do you ever hope to open the program up to boys? "We hope to build a home of our own with an ice rink, fitness facilities and an innovative academic center for girls and boys. Right now, we are at capacity just serving girls and we have a long waiting list. Once we can open up more ice and if there is demand, boys will be able to access our services as well. "
Where do you see Figure Skating in Harlem in
the future? What does winning this award mean to you?
"It's really a chance for me to return to WFS and share my gratitude. I want to thank Friends School not only for the world-class education I received, but, more importantly, for the Quaker values that made an imprint on my life and professional career path."
How has your experience at Friends influenced your life, especially Figure Skating in Harlem?
"We
want
to
continue
to
build
on
our
successes. 100% of our graduating seniors go on to college and no student has become pregnant before adulthood. Our goal now is to be able to meet the demand for our services. We have a waiting list for girls to get in. Our dream is to have a home of our own with an ice rink, state of the art fitness facilities and our academic center all under one roof. It's the natural next step to have even
greater impact and we are working toward it."

Number seven has seen way too much turf during the early part of his team's schedule . While a scrambling quarterback is more likely to receive hits than the average pocket passer, Vick has passed even his own standard of beatings. At this point, the extra hits Vick is taking are caused notjust by himself but also by another factor. The Philadelphia Eagles' offensive line is directly tuning Vick's strengths into weaknesses and turning his weaknesses into beatings . While Vick is holding onto the ball for too long at some points , his depleted front five are doing him no help of holding off the pressure . "They [the offensive line] need to hold the pocket
longer, but Vick also needs to throw the ball away when he is under pressure after scrambling," Susan Kuhn ' 13 remarks about the offensive struggles so far. "Let's just say he [Vick] isn't the rurmer he used to be." Proof of the Eagles' struggle to get the ball off can be shown by the number of times Vick has been hit: a league high of 32 times, six more than the next closest quarterback. This statistic directly translates to the lack of success of the offense, as the Eagles are third to last in the league scoring only 16.5 points per game. We can only wonder how explosive the Eagles' offense could have been if their offensive line could have stayed healthy. Even before training camp started, the Eagles learned that they would be playing without their all-pro left tackle Jason Peters for the entire season. Peters had ruptured his Achilles tendon during an off-season workout and needed the entire season to recover from this major injury. The Eagles quickly signed former Bills tackle Demetress Bell to a five-year deal, only for him to later
get beat out for starting left tackle by former seventh round pick King Dunlap. However, Dunlap suffered a hamstring injury during Week 2 against the Ravens, putting Bell back at the
starting spot. Bell has underperfomed vastly since, easing little pressure off Vick on the left side. To make matters worse, starting center Jason Kelce suffered a season ending ACL and MCL tear during the same week two game. Kelce had started every game for the Eagles in the 2011 to 2012 season , but is now replaced by Dallas Reynolds, a 28-year-old seeing his first career NFL action. "Losing Kelce hurt a lot because we took a major shot at center," Chris DiMaria ' 13 comments on the Eagles ' latest offensive line injury. With the line as thin as it stands now, Vick is looking to keep more plays alive with his feet. More often than not, Vick's ability to open things up is playing to his disadvantage. "The line is a problem, but so is Vick's inability to get rid of the ball ," explains Jimmy Carney ' 1 5 on why the offense has been struggling. "Unfortunately, this leads to sacks and hits . Vick is also not the best passer and not a natural pocket passer, but if the line were better, he wouldn't see as much pressure, and he'd get hit less." Not only is Vick getting clobbered, he is getting pressured at the worst times . The Eagles have only scored a touchdown 38% of the time they have been in the red zone, among the worst in the league. It is easy to remember the momentum-swinging hit Vick took at the end of the first half in week three against the Cardinals. Down 17-0, the Eagles were about to get back into the game on third and goal at the Cardinals one-

Sports writer In last year's UEFA Champions League, APOEL FC from Cyprus captured the world's hearts. The small Cypriot club made a run in the tournament that no one would have ever imagined. After making it through the qualifying process to the tournament, APOEL made it into the round of sixteen by finishing second in their group that featured Russian power,Zenitst.Petersburg,Ukraihianchampion,Shakhtar Donetsk, and the famed Portuguese club FC Porto. In the round of sixteen, APOEL took on Olympique Lyonnais, a top French club. After two tightly contested games the two teams went on to a penalty shootout where APOEL took down the Lyonnais and became the first Cypriot club , and the first club outside the top sixty in the UEFA Club Rankings , to advance to the quarterfinal of the Champions League. "As someone who has family living in Cyprus,

Almost immediately after the snap , safety Kerry Rhodes came in unblocked and caused the fumble return touchdown that all but sealed the game for the Cardinals before the second half even began. Although the Eagles go into week five with a 3-1 record, they could easily be 0-4 after winning their three games by a combined four points . As thrilling as the wins have been against the Browns , Ravens , and Giants , the Eagles offense has been showing negativetrendsthatarelikelytocontinueinthenearfuture. it was incredible to see how far APOEL went in the tournament. My family over there told me a lot about how everyone in the country came together to support the club," saysAlexBalis,agraduateof'12.Afterthemagicalrunof APOEL that ended in a defeat to the famed Real Madrid, it posed the question: Could there possibly be another APOEL in the 2012-2013 UEFA Champions League? Although most teams have played only two games so far in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League, there are a few clubs that look like they may be capable of surprising others in the tournament. Although small clubs such as FC Nordsja31land from Denmark or GNK Dinamo Zagreb from Croatia are not looking strong so far in the tournament, there are a few mainly unheard-of clubs that are off to strong starts. The first of these clubs is FC BATE Borisov of Belarus, which has opened up the tournament with two unexpected wins . The first win was over Lille from France and the second over four-time Champions League winners Bayem Munich from Germany. Although there are four more group games for BATE , their early results appear as if they could make a deep run into the tournament. The second of the two clubs who look as if they could make a run into the round of sixteen is the Romanian club CFR 1907 Cluj. Cluj has won three of the last five titles in Romania, but now they are looking to find success in Europe. Greek mid fielder Pantelis Kapetanos and Romanian forward Gabriel Muresan lead Cluj. In their first game of the tournament, Cluj battled to a 2-0 win over Braga from Portugal and then put up a great fight in a tough 2-1 loss to worldwide power Manchester United in their second game. With the tough competition in their group, it does not look like Cluj will be able to take first, but a second place finish and a trip to the round of sixteen is definitely in reach for the club from Romania. The UEFA Champions League is the top club tournament in the world. All of the top European soccer clubs face off to be crowned the champions of Europe. Cypriot club APOEL made an incredible run in last year's tournament, so look out for the underdog clubs this year
poised to make a run.
Why So BIue, Kangaroo? James Kocher `13
Sports Writer Year after year, we have cheered and pandered to the candy-throwing Blue Kangaroo. I know the idea has crossed everyone's mind, "Why is our mascot the Blue Kangaroo?" We are the Wilmington Friends School Quakers, why not have the Quaker Oats guy? A kangaroo seems to be a random choice since the blue kangaroo is not found in Wilmington Friends or any other Quaker history. This idea seemingly came from out of nowhere. But it is time the people know the truth and the story behind the mysterious Blue Kangaroo. When I asked the current Junior Jesse Miller if he knew why our school mascot was a kangaroo he responded, "No, dude, I have no idea why." Other students, like Cale Aerenson '14, responded with comical responses by saying, "Quakerism originated in Australia when they had blue ocean kangaroos. They went extinct around the same time as unicorns." Obviously the students are stumped by the question, "Why the `Roo?" The first stop in the hunt for the blue kangaroo was the person with the big blue kangaroo sitting on her desk, Ms. Purtiz-Fine. Even though Ms. Purtiz-Fine was not able to tell me why we have the blue kangaroo, she was able to tell me that, "fifteen years ago, they said: `Don't use the Kangaroo' . They tried to use a big Quaker head, then moved on to the meeting house logo with the 1748 underneath.Butultimately, ithaslandedbacktotheblue Kangaroo." She went on to say, "The blue kangaroo used to be discouraged, but it just `hopped' back into popularity a decade ago ." When I asked Ms . Purtiz-Fine about the how the Kangaroo came back into relevance, she said, "It just happened." Not even Ms. Purtiz-Fine could tell me how it became our Mascot. So hitting a

LET'S GET PUMPED UP! Rachel MacKelcan Entertainment ` 14 From games to gigs, we all have those songs that remove all uncertainty and truly pump us up. A good
pump-up song makes us tap our feet along to the familiar beat, but a great song causes us to jump up and down and make complete fools of ourselves. A great song removes all prior doubt in ourselves and inspires us to achieve the impossible. So,askyourselfthis,"Whichsongspumpme up?" Maybe it is that song you hear every time you are in the weight room, the tune your friend just will not stop humming in the halls, or the song you hear in your head that matches the deafening roar of the crowd when you finally score that goal or cross the finish line.
With homecoming just around the comer, "Gangnam Style" reigns supreme as the ultimate motivational song. PSY's infectious lyrics and quirky dance routine have landed him the number one spot on iTunes. Not only has the song's iTunes popularity skyrocketed, but the Gz6z.#73css
War/d Records declared the song the most "liked" video on YouTube. The song's influence has spread throughout WFS culture: not only will you find students singing "GangnamStyle"beforegames, butyoucanfindthecrosscountry team practicing the dance in the weight room. Similarly, some people turn to unconventional sounds for motivation. For instance, Jake Erskine '15 listens to ``goose calls" to pump up before football
games. Though he chose not to further elaborate on his preference, perhaps other people have a penchant for the bizarre, as well. Regardless, choosing an inspirational sound reflects on individual tastes. Some may gravitate to eccentric YouTube videos, and others may appreciate avian influences. The next time you find yourself in the stands at a football game, show your support with some goose calls . Aflac !
Some people could not pick one song, but gravitated towards a select artist. For instance , Jonathan Gardner ' 16 says his favorite artist to listen to is, "Kanye West. I listen to his music at home and at school." Kanye West's songs combine catchy beats , rhythmic chants , and self-assured
lyrics. No rapper can better capture such intensity and transfer it to the listener. His anthems serve as the perfect
pump-up songs from basketball games to track meets. Some people do not draw on particular songs or artists; instead, they prefer movie soundtracks. For instance, Dom Lutz ' 14 says his favorite song is, "It's Raining Men.' Why? Because it is featured in Mc[gi.c Mz.kc. Some people listen to heavy metal, I listen to the A4czgz.c Mz.ke soundtrack." Sometimes we need a little
familiarity before matches. Or, sometimes we crave a little humor before the pressure of the game begins. Who says motivation just comes from a catchy chorus? It can come from all different sources, from goose calls to movies alike. Do particular sports teams prefer particular songs? Graham Haubert ' 14 says the soccer team listens to, ```Ai Se Eu Te Pego.' Jack Hall tries to dance to it." There is nothing like a little levity to prepare for a match ! Football players take a different route . Gil Connolly ' 14 says, "The Junior football players listen to `Bang' by Wcka Flocka." The song "Bang" provides colorful lyricism that is perfect to set the tone of games . The Seniors ' preferences slightly differ. Bowman Benge ' 13 says he listens to, "American Heartbeat' by Survivor. It's great!" Survivor also sings "Eye of the Tiger," the quintessential ' 80s pump up song.
Sometimes, the best motivation can come from a can instead of an ipod. For instance, James Sepelyak ' 14 says, ``1 don't really know any good pump-up songs, but I'm sure drinking Red Bull would work." While pump-up songs engender internal determination , Red Bull creates an artificial explosion of energy. Though not always the healthy option, sugary drinks do an excellent job of producing mass amounts of energy. From goose calls, to Mczgi.c Mi.ke, to "Gangnam Style," WFS sure knows how to generate motivation! After countless hours of practice, sometimes you need that little extra push in order to score that winning goal or cross the finish line. Your mindset can establish how
you play during a game, so it is important to find what motivates and inspires you. Athletes, tell us what pumps
you up. Fans want to know how they can help bring home a victory !

You've probably heard of Alana "A Dolla Makes Me Holla!" Thompson and her mom "Work It Smoochie!" June from the highly
criticized TLC show, Toddlers & Tiaras. Due to Alana's popularity on the show, TLC gave Alana and her family a spin-off show He7ie Comes Honey Boo Boo. Honey Boo Boo chronicles the daily lives of the Thompson family,. which consists of Alana ("Honey Boo Boo") , her parents ("Mama June" and "Sugar Bear") , and her three sisters (``Chickadee", "Chubbs" and "Pumpkin") . The show follows the Thompson family as they go ``extreme couponing" at the local Piggly Wiggly, get a little

TLC saw these country hicks from Georgia and thought we would all have a kick out of watching them piddie' around their miserable lives for America's entertainment. It is disgusting the way TLC portrays this family, and how they assume we will react. Whenever the family has a particularly "redneck" moment, banjo music is

apparently the family's English is unintelligible to us
"nomal" Americans. The execs want us to feel sorry for the Thompsons, to pity them, to judge their disgusting habits and consequentially feel better about ourselves. But TLC messed up this time . Despite the producers ' crafty editing, you don't see a train wreck family of country bumpkins deserving of our pity whom we should pity. Instead, you just see a slightly crazy assortment of people who love each other. The Thompsons are a family that takes care of each other. June had her oldest daughter, Chickadee, when she was only 16. She had to drop out of school to raise her. The 17 yearold Chickadee gave birth to her own daughter, Kaitlyn Elizabeth, in the season finale. The whole family is helping to take care of the baby so that Chickadee can may continue her education. The father, Sugar Bear, works seven days a week in the mines to provide for the family. The baby, by the way, was born with an extra thumb on its right hand. Wait, what? But the family embraces this weirdness , because it is what makes Kaitlyn special. TLC wants us to hate this family; they want us to be disgusted by them. But I'm not. I am kind of in love with them. I don't feel sorry for the Thompsons. I don't think this show is an indication that the world is going to end in 2012. I don't judge Chickadee for
getting pregnant so young, and I don't judge the family's odd pastimes or quirks. They're absolutely crazy (and proud of it), and they're just doing what they love. But, just like all reality television, it is hard to tell what is real from what is not. Maybe I've fallen deep into the pit of trashy American pop culture. Maybe the whole thing is an act, and Alana and June are both professional a;cto[s. Or maybe Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is just a sweet show about a crazy family that loves to laugh with each other and doesn't care what others think of them.
