You gather all of your old textbooks, flatten the pages , erase the doodles, and take them downstairs to sell them back to MBS Direct. Easy enough, right? To some yes, but to many others, no. Many students still remember the previous book sales and collections that took place in the old North Gym. At the beginning of the year, students and parents would go to the gym to buy their textbooks for the year, using lists provided by teachers. At the end of the year, students would bring their books to the gym. They would fill out foms so that they could be compensated when their books were sold. Part of the profits went to the Home and School Association, and the rest went to the student. The book collection required a lot of labor by the parent volunteers and the books were stored in the old north gym stage. However, this system did not work very well. "It took a lot of people power to collect the books, and it was always very hard to move and organize the books. It was really tough," says Russell Endo, the co-clerk of the previous book sale. The prior system required a lot of volunteers and also required many hours of organizing, sorting, and labeling after the actual book collection occurred. Debbie Mccall , the administrative head, explains why we switched from the old, original book sale . "We changed the bock sale because over the years , there were too many books that we couldn't use anymore, so in the inventory, there were thousands and thousands of books we could not sell." lh/hen teachers switched to new editions or new books entirely, the Home and School association was left with books that could not be sold. In 2008, Wilmington Friends switched over to MBS Direct. MBS Direct was formed in 1994 when Park University asked MBS to run their textbook buyback program at the University, as well as at twenty-eight military bases around the United States. MBS created a textbook program that

took on all the responsibilities associated with a bookbuyback program. This program eventually led to the formation of MBS Direct as we know it today. MBS Direct is based in a 310,000 square foot warehouse in Columbia, Missouri. The warehouse contains over seven million volumes. Students can buy books through our school's virtual bookstore, which sorts the books by course. To sell their books back to MBS Direct, students can go to the MBS Direct website and fill out a buyback quote. They can then ship their books and the quote to MBS Direct, a service offered by our Home and School Association. The buyback value is determined by the anticipated future demand and the current stock. MBS boasts 98.3% order accuracy, 99.9% on time shipping, and 97.9% of books are shipped before classes start. But is this true for Friends students? Sophomore Jack Hollingsworth responded, "I think it's oveapriced, slow to ship, and confusing. I don't think many students actually use it."

Danette Conley, parent of a Wilmington Friends freshman, makes a valid point; "I do think that the online system is easy to use. But there is a downside to the online process: you cannot inspect the quality or condition of the books. Some books you might prefer new if you saw the condition before purchasing them." Other students find it hard to find the website itself. Senior Wesley Carl quipped, "I have found that it is very hard to find it [the virtual bookstore] from the Friends website. The bookstore itself is easy to use, but it is hard to get to." The MBS Direct system is, however, useful in many ways. Students now have the option to buy their books from other sources, such as Amazon's used books section. By using an outside service, the school does not have to worry about the burden and hidden costs of setting up a book buyback program. MBS Direct bills and delivers the books directly to students, which helps to avoid confusion and misplaced books. Using MBS Direct has taken great of burden off of the Home and School Association and it has provided students with more book-buying options.

Galal-di's FIFA affaii-: Afi-ica's unforgettable finish Michael Galardi '13

Sports writer On June llth the entire world gatheredforthebeginningofthemostwatched month of sports in the world, the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The toumarnent has been over for a couple of months now and Spain's players have been crowned champions of the world, while many countries were left in their wake. As both an avid soccer fan and player, I decided to make the long journey to South Africa with my father to watch four World Cup matches. While they were all exciting, one of these matches stood out to me, and to the entire world, as momentous.

On June 28th we left on our twenty-hour trip to Johannesburg, South Africa. We touched down in "Jo'Burg" in the evening and were in a completely different world. The cool and dry 45-degree South African winter was drastically different from the humid summer days in Wilmin8ton. The next day, we went to our first

game. We left the hotel roughly three and a half hours before the game in order to try and beat traffic. It took our bus two hours to make the fifteen-mile trip to the beautiful Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, the home of the 2010 Fifa World Cup Final. We then watched what was, in my mind, one of the greatest soccer matches ever played. This game was not just any game, though; it was a ganie that meant more to a continent and a country than one had ever before .

Uruguay was playing the small African country, Ghana, in a quarterfinal game to decide who would take on the winner of the Netherlands vs . Brazil match. Since Ghana was the last African nation left in the tournament, the whole continent of Africa was supporting them. This game was vital; it was the last chance to bring an African nation closer to winning on

left hand side of the goal, and everyone was in disbelief when it smashed off the crossbar and flew into the first row behind the goal. All of Africa was absolutely crushed as Gyan's head went down in disbelief and shame over the event that had taken place in the last few seconds.

Sports writer The 2010 Wilmington Friends fall sports have started, and all of them have the potential to have a great season. There is curiosity about this year's football team because football has traditionally been a strong point for Friends sports. This year's team has a bit of everything, from many underclassmen playing for varsity to seniors making one

final run.

Let's take a look at this year's Friends Football team, led by longtime head coach, Bob Tattersall. The team's quarterback this year is senior captain Sam Davis, while the running backs are sophomores Luke Magness and Jon MCMillan and seniors Jermaine Young and Kieran Smith. Seniors Matt Davis and captain Dan Carbone are key players who play both wide receiver and tight end. The offensive line consists of senior left tackle Matt Kempner protecting Sam Davis's blind side, while sophomore Bowman Benge helps out at left guard. Sophomore Ryan Broussard snaps the football as center. On the right side of the line is junior right guard, Pat Schlecker, and senior right tackle and captain, Rick Serra. Sophomore Sam Camey is the team's kicker. Senior Jermaine Young dodges a tackle .

Even though the team had some disappointing losses early in the season to Brandywine High School, Maryland School for the Deaf, and Moore Catholic High School, they look to bounce back and finish the season strongly. It should be an interesting year for the Quakers, and there are definitely many games worth seeing.
