The swimming pool is a place for fun, exercise and of course swimming. Although disease and germs are everywhere, the risk of illness can be carried quickly through a swimming pool or hot tub environment. It’s important to take every precaution to prevent the spread of disease like the Zika virus from becoming a pandemic. Here are a few things to look out for and what you should do if you think you’re at risk.

Empty swimming pools are a cesspool for things like mosquitoes.

If you’re living next to a home that’s abandoned, empty or is a temporary home you may have some issues to contend with.

Recommend that they have a pool company maintain the pool if they’re temporary residents with a pool that is left unattended during the summer months. If you can’t get a hold of the owner, then report them to the HOA or anyone who has access and let them know there is a potential health hazard.

Chlorine can burn your lungs if it’s not used properly. Chlorine can also kill some of the good bacteria our body needs. Good bacteria are highly important for things like our digestive system as well as our immune system. Be sure to have a pool pro inspect the use of the chlorine levels in your swimming pool or Jacuzzi.

Certain parasites can be found in any pool. The bad ones can cause diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, abdominal pain, fever, nausea and vomiting. A small amount of contaminated feces is enough to infect many people due to parasites that spread quickly in the water. Ecoli can exist in the pool and so can things like Cryptosporidium and giardia, which is caused by human waste.

One of the biggest reasons to not stick your head underwater is because of bacteria and infections. These can be transmitted from ingesting the water, whether by accident or other reason.

Since many diseases are transferred in the water, it’s best to play it safe here and don’t go under.

Shigellosis, E. Coli, Leptospirosis, Giardiasis, Crypotsporidiosis, Hepatitis A, Epidemic Viral Gastroenteropathy, Naegleriasis, Pseudomonas, Schistosomiasis, Dracunculiasis.

By having your swimming pool cleaned and maintained regularly, you will prevent many of these diseases from spreading in your pool. Remember it’s still ‘water outside.’ Meaning, you are subject to being exposed to the elements whenever they decide to form and invade your pool.
