Top 6 Mistakes Mom Bloggers Make … and how to correct them!

Don’t worry, most bloggers make at least one of these mistakes; I certainly have!

Whether you’re a new mom blogger with a specific niche, or a mom blogger blogging about family life in general; you’re here because you want to make money from your blog.

Well, it all starts with recognizing and having a few of the basic blogging fundamentals in place. Here, I go over the top 6 mistakes mom bloggers make when wanting to blog for profit.

1. Using A Free Blogging Platform If you’re blogging just for fun, and a lot of mom bloggers are, then using a free blogging platform such as Blogger or WordPress.com is just fine.

However, if you want to run a business blog and blog for money, then you simply MUST have your own domain-hosted blog.

Casual for fun blogging: Serious revenue generating blog:

Blogger or WordPress.com Your own domain-hosted WordPress.org blog Note: WordPress.com is the free platform, WordPress.org is the business platform.

You need to be in control of your own blog; if you have a free blogger blog then you’re not in control of it.

Honestly, I’ve seen and read stories on forums about people who were earning a nice little (some a lot!) monthly income from their blogger blog only to wake up one morning to find that Google (who owns Blogger) had shut them down with no notice. Hence their monthly income gone overnight.

If you own your own domain and hosting account then this cannot happen to you. So I seriously urge you to start a new blog with your own domain and hosting, and then transfer your Blogger blog over to WordPress.com.

2. Not SEOing Blog Posts Search engine traffic is free traffic which is a fantastic traffic source and should not be ignored. However, I often see blogs run by moms who don’t appear to use keywords in their blog posts or even on their index page.

I see this as a major oversight because with a few little tweaks you can easily make your blog posts search engine friendly. By doing just the very basic SEO you literally have the potential of showing up in Google and getting hundreds, if not thousands, of extra free visitors a day simply by SEOing your posts.

This is easily achieved using a free WordPress plugin. There are several, but the one I use and love is SEO by Yoast. http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-seo/ Of course you need to do some keyword research and know which keywords people are typing into Google first so you can put those keywords in your blog posts to be found in the search engines. 3. Not Using a Blog Post Scheduling System If you’re a great blog post writer, then the chances are that you have a loyal following of blog followers eagerly waiting for your next blog post.

But do you:   

Have a blog post schedule?

Know the date of publishing your next blog post?

Know what your next blog post is going to be about?

These are the types of questions you need to say YES to all day long.

You need to develop a blog post schedule and make sure you stick to it (your MWR that is). If you end up posting at odd times or missing deadlines it leaves your blog followers feeling disappointed and maybe even make visitors think that your blog is no longer active.

The easiest way to fix this is to plan your blog posts well in advance. This way you can clearly see what topics you need to cover and in what sequence and you won’t disappoint your blog subscribers which is the most important reason for scheduling blog posts in advance.

The best way to do this is to use a monthly calendar and plan out your blog posts for the month. You can then break this down into weekly tasks, then daily tasks in order to get your blog posts written and published on time.

4. Not Having A ‘Money Plan’ This goes hand-in-hand with the above point, you need to have a plan in place to make money from your blog. You can’t just stick a couple of affiliate banners in your side bar and expect to make a monthly residual income from them.

You need to find out what your Most Wanted Response (MWR) is for your blog. By this I mean what do you want your visitors to do when they land on your blog?

Do you want them to:    

Sign up for your newsletter?

Click on your Google Adsense ads?

Buy your ebook?

Buy a high converting affiliate product?

Once you know your MWR, you can then start structuring your blog to drive visitors to it. By ‘structuring’ I mean planning your blog’s design and layout, how and where you’ll market/advertise your blog, how you’ll structure and word your blog posts etc.

So take some time out and sit with a pen and paper and really think about how you want to make money from your blog and how you’re going to accomplish that. 5. Not Having A Traffic Building Strategy Yes, you’ve guessed it – you need to plan out a traffic generating strategy too. There’s dozens of ways to market your blog to drive traffic to it but first you need to answer these two questions: What marketing methods do I enjoy doing?

What are the most effective traffic generating methods for my target audience?

There’s no point in posting videos to YouTube because you know that its a great for traffic building if you are camera shy and don’t come across professional in your videos.

At the same time, there’s also no point in you doing a huge Pinterest campaign to drive traffic to your blog if your blog is about truck driving as Pinterest is largely used by women who are into crafts.

So again, sit down and think about who your target audience is, find out where the hang out and then go and get them – but only use methods which you enjoy doing. If they largely hangout on Facebook and you hate doing Facebook marketing, then think about paying for some Facebook ads.

There’s always an alternative!

6. Not Having A Blogging Plan in General As you can see, the main theme running through these points is in the word ‘plan’. If you want to blog for profit, then you need to take your blogging seriously and start planning everything you do this week and are going to do next week, next month, even next year.

Blogging success doesn’t ‘just happen’. Thousands of daily visitors doesn’t ‘just happen’. A monthly residual income doesn’t ‘just happen’. You need to make all these things happen.

How? By laying out and planning every step of your blogging journey. Planning can start from the very basic admin side of things such as keeping a log of your passwords, blog contacts and a daily ‘to do’ list to planning advanced marketing and monetization strategies to help you get to $10,000 a month on a consistent basis.
