If you live in the Southern Florida area a hot tub may be something that gets overlooked or underused. With the heat and humidity, a Jacuzzi is oftentimes people will avoid. Here is the ugly truth about hot tubs, spas and Jacuzzis you may not know.

Things like mold and bacteria grow in hot, moist environments. In order for you to maintain a healthy PH level in a spa or hot tub temperatures, it’s important to have the unit treated and also cleaned on a regular basis. Only proper disinfectants should be used, even in salt-water spas.

It’s important to shower before getting into the tub. This will help lessen your chances of spreading infections and other disease, but it’s not always 100% accurate. Germs such as Legionella are a type of pneumonia found in lukewarm water that can be transmitted through the steam or air that is omitted by the steam from the tub. This disease can produce flu-like symptoms that is curable, but is also more easily obtained by people that have low immune systems.

Things like urine, sweat and waste mix with chlorine. When that happens it can create an irritant called chloramine. This can affect your immune system or your respiration. The chloramine is transmitted by way of getting into the tear ducts which is part of the reason people’s eyes become red from being in the pool.

Skin infections such as Pseudomonas folliculitis are sometimes contracted from soaking in a hot tub. This disease produces itchy, red bumps that are generally outlined near your bathing suit lines. The disease generally clears up on its own, but it’s good to get the advice from a physician or dermatologist.

Another health concern for people are those that suffer from heart attack or stroke. A hot tub is normally set at 104°. That being said, means that people that have recently had a difficult time with cardiovascular issues like blood pressure, should avoid going into a hot tub. If you feel that you could be in danger, then find another way to enjoy the water.

The more people that use a hot tub, the greater your chances of contracting an illness. The best practice is to shower immediately after using a Jacuzzi. Use soap and wash your body thoroughly to ensure you’re clean.

Keep in mind, no matter how clean a hot tub or spa may be, you still have the potential to contract bacteria or disease. The cleaner this area is, the less your chances are of coming down with something.
