Check for references, ask for up to three references of people that have worked for the company. This is very useful and ask for them to send you pictures. Any company with a good reputation will be willing to provide you with a decent amount of referrals. But don’t just take the numbers, contact the people!
Ask to view their work portfolio, examples on their cell phone, a website, etc. Many of the designers are like artists and have an eye for function with aesthetics. Take the time to do a good design with these guys and the rest of the project should run smoothly. But if they have a different idea, don’t wait till the last minute to compare. Many companies will charge you a hefty fee for changing last minute details.
This is a long term investment, but it’s up to you to make sure the money is being spent to give you what you’re looking for. Does the pool builder give ALL their information? This is a large job with the potential to have something go a rye you need to have all the company preferably their foreman or project manager.
Do you trust them? Follow your gut. You don’t want to be calling channel 7’s producers of “Help Me Howard!” Always follow your instincts. That gut is twisting for a reason and it’s up to you to pay attention. No matter how anxious you are, it’s important to do your due diligence. Ask them how long their last three projects took to complete. Ask for dates to be more realistic. This will give you a realistic outlook on how long your project may take. It also tells you if they meet deadlines and targeted dates for completion.

Get a Contract
Get a contract and make sure that everything is legitimate. Make certain that the
contract includes scope of work and dates of targeted completion, any projected issues
that they contemplate or predict that could happen, and their references. This is the very
least you should do to protect the builder as well as yourself. Contracts protect
everyone.
Ask them what their cancellation policies are and if there is are any clauses that they could abandon the project. Have a lawyer discuss this with the pool builders? The responsible parties will adhere to an agreement that is acceptable to both parties. Most time people don’t ask and aren’t aware that the builder has the right to set guidelines for he and his crew. This should be included in the agreement and both parties should keep a copy.
