LOCAL NOTES Tom Swann joins board of National LGBT Veterans Memorial Project In the year 2000 a memorial to all veterans and to GLBT veterans was dedicated in the national veterans cemetery in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2001, the first memorial honoring LGBT veterans was dedicated in Desert Memorial Park, Cathedral City, CA. All veterans thank those individuals and organizations who have worked so tirelessly and through seemingly daunting challenges to make these important memorials a reality.

Tom Swann is a nationally-recognized gay civil rights and veteran leader who lives in Rancho Mirage, California. Tom was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and an E-6 with the Naval Air Reserve. In December 1992, as a GS11 civilian employee, Swann traveled to Naval Air Systems Command Headquarters in Washington DC and came out of the closet to a Navy Admiral. The Navy retaliated against Swann and placed him on the unfunded list in an attempt to terminate his employment. The ACLU filed several complaints on Swann’s behalf and in May 1994 his case was settled out of court. His case prompted Navy Secretary John Dalton to add sexual orientation protection to the Equal Employment Opportunities (EEO) policy. Swann became the last gay federal worker to have his access to classified information challenged by the government. He is a published author, college speaker and peace activist.

FROM THE DESK OF THE PUBLISHER by Will Paige This weekend team DDG spent a great big fun weekend during Joshua Tree Pride. We toured artist exhibits, antique shops, even got a nipple pierced and then kicked around in the desert sand for a while blowing off steam. Just for fun, last year our canopy blew away so this year we had a new one with a sun shade. This attachable sun shade made all the difference in keeping our collective butts cool in the desert.

After doing it for more years than I care to admit, we are starting to get it down to a science, but I really think it is because I stopped listening to the “experts” and listen to the other people joining me in the trenches of “booth living.” The folks at Village fest were very helpful in tutoring us in buying, packing, setting up and the like.

This week we are off to Desert Romp with another booth set up. Desert Romp is a great charity event from DJ Corey and the folks from PNN. It’s a carnival, but the midway games are all run by hot-hot-hot Porn Stars.

We have a booth and will be handing out products and literature for our advertisers and will have our “wheel of prizes” give-away as well. This is one of my best ideas that I brought to this magazine, and it was based

on observation, exploration and innovation. A concept of continuous improvement through trial and error and the ability to be honest with one self. i.e. A cheap canopy was a friggen disaster! The idea occurred to me that a trade booth needs to put information in people’s hands and that is more than just brand recognition, its a dialogue with the reader and we need to listen..

At JT pride we were the only magazine that had a booth as is often the case in the valley; This is not to diminish the competition, in fact, it’s a secret advantage that I should not even mention, but I do because I would love to see another magazine sponsoring gay events for the gay community.

Advertisers of all sizes in the DDG are encouraged to give us display cards, business cards as well as provide show discounts and coupons. At JT pride we use our spin to win prize wheel to give away over $200.00 worth of coupons to some great places such at CCBC, Q Trading, Rio Azul Restaurant and more.

And it gives us time to chat about our advertisers and hear the great stories from satisfied customers of these locations.

Continued from page 25 A great example was Off Ramp Leather, someone that has just moved here from the bay area that was very familiar with Off Ramp Leather was very happy to learn we had one here.

When I told them the owners moved here they were all the more happy. We met writers, pride goers and people of all ages, each with a story, a narrative if you will of a single gay life. From the young ones that came out to support the cause with the local gay straight alliance to the older LGBT folks happy to see how the world has turned out after so many years of struggle.

The volunteers this year made for a great experience for all that attended and kept everything running smoothly.

While Shann Carr held the 12 hour entertainment schedule on track which was no small task. Speaking of Shann, I would ask you to go to her web page and find out more about her plans to rehabilitate Gertie the RV to be a community help vehicle so she can do more good deeds in Palm Springs and beyond! She deserves our support!

Let me end by admitting booth-ing is not easy, it requires getting up before the cock crows and not even able to do anything about it, and always starts with “This is my last event forever!” So every year I go to JT along with all that have worked with the DDG over the 30

years learn something new. I can still remember each event that we hosted a booth to support the community. And all of the volunteers over the years that worked our booth all came away with the same thing, volunteering is like learning to love, it’s a bit intimidating at first but it’s not really difficult and you will have life long memories from it. Also, it ends with a sadness that we will need to wait an entire year to do it all over again.

This year I thought I would share some of the stories. Many writers asked me when we would have a writing competition again so we decided to kick one off in July, it’s hot and a lot of fun at home coming up with a great story. This year’s competition will be open with no theme, except some aspect of LGBT life or history. We are also looking for judges so if you would like to be a judge we would be happy to include you. Judges will be from all slices of life, including published authors, avid readers and everyone in between. We will start the competition around July 4 and give our local writers more time to come up with great stories. Even if you have never written before you should give it a try, life is always doing something new and different and learning about yourself and the world around you.

Often we publish press releases of things that are happening around the valley but many asked us to help organize special field trips so that we can car pool and keep the prices low and perhaps have special lectures geared around the LGBT community. Alabama LGBT community celebrates a state appeals court ruling that declared part of a state sexual misconduct law as unconstitutional.

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore Dear Gay Men of Palm Springs, Aren’t you lucky to have a place like Palm Springs, CA to have your midlife crisis in?

You are too old for West Hollywood and/or any other largely populated gay cosmopolitan city, but Palm Springs is the perfect place for your final years. You can dress like a twenty year old and not look too completely ridiculous, well because everyone else is dresses like you. You go to the gym and work out for the body you have achieved, thanks to other drugs and stimulants, and is considered “hot” because there aren’t many twinks for comparison. If you stand next to someone less attractive, boy do you look better!

If you are not a gym buddy and you are on the larger side, you become a Bear. A polar bear, a muscle bear, an otter. Whatever you decide you want to use as a label as long as “you” fit it, then you have achieved popularity. You finally fit into a clique, like in high school, so many, many, many, many years ago!

Mom and Dad doesn’t cut it, but they don’t need to know that, it’s all about image. Appearing to have that expensive car like in West Hollywood. Don’t you think it’s time to grow up and just be you? Be proud and happy and graduate, finally. I couldn’t wait to get out of High School with being gay and bullied. Why does it feel like I’m still there? Games are for High School. We now play the game of life!!!

It’s hard enough as adults, so why act like children? Once was enough for me!

Like High School if there is a group you don’t agree with then you have that option to ostracize them and make it go away. It’s easy because you work out and are acting like a kid again, like the ten or fifteen years you didn’t fit into a gay mold never existed. Thank goodness for the Palm Springs Class of Midlife Crisis!
