FROM THE DESK OF THE PUBLISHER by Will Paige I have never done a movie review, but the movie “Her” had me interested on many levels. “Her” is a 2013 science-fiction-cum-romantic comedydrama film by Spike Jonze. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, and Scarlett Johansson as the voice of Samantha.

Although not really mentioned, it’s based around an artificial intelligence operating system called OS one.

When I was a developer, the company I worked for, Digital, had an AI team, and it was mostly factored to troubleshoot support issues. All but abandoned, it is still used to help tech support suggest fixes. And now it’s known as SIRI on your smart phones.

AI, at its basic level, is nothing more than a virtual creation of several buckets of facts, with each given a numerical weight. The higher the number, the more likely that said piece of information is true. Like most thought processes implemented in software, they are completely devoid of emotions. All the facts can then be compared and computed so that a likely true answer can be predicted. However, for us to be able to factor in emotions, we will need to develop general intelligence, also called strong AI. This also needs to enter the human world of natural language processing, and gives machines the ability to read and understand the languages that humans speak.

If, for example, I want my AI to become a golf pro, I can ask it to read five books on golf lessons, and it will become an expert, yet it will not encourage me to learn. The next phase will be the ability to factor in emotion. The AI will need to factor in an emotional state of a human and adapt its behavior to them, giving an appropriate response for those emotions. This will be tricky, because the AI machine won’t be able to feel emotions, only display words having characteristics of emotion. The other thing is that no one likes a knowit-all, and the computer processing speed will give it vast superiority over human thought, allowing it to

out-distance our own learning by leaps and bounds.

Imagine the ability to read a million books in just a few hours, take each sentence and categorize it in different ways, and store it with key words so it’s like a search engine and can respond to our requests. Another aspect to be developed would be the ability to create and distinguish what is creative opposed to something like paint splatter on a canvas that is actually more than just paint splattered on a canvas.

The movie allows all these elements, and they are subtly played out in a way that true nerds see, and the average movie goers can enjoy a natural relationship developing, even though one partner is a bodiless set of CPU’s and memory chips. Yes, I have a girlfriend and she is an OS, but it seems to get a reaction that is similar to other unusual relationships like gay marriage or large differences in age. Until you notice something growing in the film that has existed since man learned to write on caves, use Morse code, talk on a CB radio and now internet chat rooms, there is something truly erotic about communication via words to a disembodied sentience unknown to us. The quest to be answered in this film is not to show as much as can man fall in love with a machine, but rather when it gets that level of programming, will it still love us? Unlike wall paintings and the like, AI has all the aspects of human existence, and we have unleashed it on our cell phones, our water supply, and even our food to some extent. While it cannot kill all of us, it can surely make life miserable before we can unplug all of them.

Many remember the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

HAL says, “I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.”

Dave asks what the problem is. HAL replies, “I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.” But if you add one letter to each letter in the name HAL, you will find the secret meaning found as the root of all evil in computing.

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by JerseyLabels Shore Labels! Labels! Labels! And I on top of labels! don’t mean Gucci, Prada and Dolce! Why must we, as a society, label ourselves? Just because I am fat and hairy does not mean that I am a Bear. I smoke pot, so now that makes me a pot head and I’m stoned 24/7?

And it doesn’t stop there. With these labels comes one label on top of another.

Why can’t I just be me? I am happy. I get pissed off. I have needs and desires. I have a heart and a soul. I cry. I laugh. I fart and I f*ck (these days fart more than f*ck, but, well, never at the same time). Can we make a conscious effort to become more of a tag-less community? Tagless clothing is in vogue, now!

Why can’t we be?

For example, I dress in drag and perform so I am now labeled a drag queen. Now, because of Peace, Love & No Labels, that label I am automatically a Jersey dramatic, bitchy, backstabbing, hand-flailing flamer. To add insult to injury, because I dress in woman’s attire, I now desire to be a real woman and have a sex change. And with these labels, I am again labeled as a bottom, because everyone knows a bottom means you’re the woman, the effeminate one. ARTICHOKE CRAB MEAT DIP
