FROM THE DESK OF THE PUBLISHER by Will Paige We have more amazing fun in store for you this week. But right now, I wanted to comment on our web site. Many readers know that I am a web designer, and we were one of the first magazines in the nation to have a digital version. Honestly, it was more of a series of pictures that one needed to click through. Now we have the flip book. The flip book is really the same thing, but the pictures are now placed in a Flash player. Back in early 2000 when I did it, most computers were too slow to handle such a thing, and there was not enough memory to load Flash that big. I was asked to go back to the old way. The same thing happened when everyone told me I needed to code our website to optimize for Safari (Apple’s browser). Well, that never materialized, and most Mac users still like Google Chrome. I see an amazing future in the tablet, but even that is slowed by the vast amount of users in the unfriendly but prestigious Mac “I paid” world. This is not to bash Apple, but there just seems like a total lack of innovation there and now that they have climbed to ridicule their own users. Today, the top of the line new Mac Pro configuration, which includes an Intel Xeon E5 2.7GHz 12-core CPU, 64GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD and dual AMD FirePro D700 cards with 6GB of RAM, each comes in at $9,599. Has Mac finally priced themselves out of the market, or is our quest for one-upmanship entered the computer market?

Apple is an innovator of hype to be sure, and now the iPhone is the most denigrated phone in every phone store in America. They have also

patented your eyes. On November 27, 2012 the US Patent and Trademark office approved Apple’s application and “Retina” is now a registered trademark. In fact, this simple claim is that the pixel density is high enough that the human eye is unable to discern individual pixels at a typical viewing distance. The claim is that their displays are no better then an analog camera or looking at a mountain vista with your own eyes. Hardly, Apple, get over yourself.

But it’s a must to have a digital edition to expand our digital presence. Having been a developer for over 20 years and developer of the first search engine, Sotheby’s auction site, and a few others, and having the 35 dollar raspberry Pi computer, I would say watch out for the DDG in the next few months. So we now have the flip book and, to be honest, I love it.

As a web designer, I really don’t like the output of the box flip book everyone uses, so we will be adding to our magazine special behind-thescenes pictures and videos that I think will rock your DDG experience again.

I am loyal to my age group and, unlike others, I will not just leave them behind. We will work together every step of the way as we build the DDG digital network. The first step in this process was to drop the entire site.

If you have confidence in your vision, then your web site should show it and, because I have built it over the years, there are bits and pieces. The next stop is to call in some other web experts and try to get Continued on page 44

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore Once upon a time, in a magical desert paradise, there lived a buxom brunette Queen. A humble and kind Queen, her name was Jersita. She didn’t rule with an Iron Fist. She wasn’t that kinky. Not that she had never tried it, though. By day, the Queen ruled the kingdom. By night, she was a headliner at the Royale Theatre. She was an acclaimed performer. She could do it all! Her show stopper was twirling midgets by their penis. The audience couldn’t get enough of it. The midgets didn’t mind either. (Disclaimer: This story takes place centuries ago before the term Midget was considered not PC. And no midgets were harmed during this story.)

Well, it was that time of year when preparations for the Spring Concert were in full swing. Everyone in the Desert was all a chatter of what Queen Jersita would pull out of her butt this year for the Royale Finale. Last year Jersita pulled a midget out of her butt. What could top that? Besides a top, of course. Even the Queen didn’t know what her Grand Finale would be.

While on her throne, she pondered her impending performance. She had a confused look on her face. A look as if someone had just farted. Probably because she just did. Royalty doesn’t always equal

class. And that gave her a brilliant idea for a Finale.

Long fairy-tale short. Too late, I know!

Queen Jersita realized that people liked her because of who she was. The classless Queen was true to herself and gave from the heart when she performed. She didn’t need a gimmick for the Finale. She just needed to be herself. The Queen lived her life and demonstrated that the most important things to her were not being Queen of the castle. But the love for herself and all for whom she served. When you give from your heart, no gimmick is needed. And the Queen lived to fart another day!

WHO KNEW! Well, it finally happened. How will the NFL draft go if we know the candidate was gay? A 6-foot2, 255-pound college senior, that is. Missouri defensive lineman Michael Sam, a 2013 FirstTeam All American, came out in an interview with ESPN. We also used to do our own production and, as of January, that has gone completely away. This means streamlining all of our business resources and in the process we were able to cut costs and increase our level of service to the customer and keep prices at the same level. If you look at today’s version of the DDG versus the old DDG, one can feel and see the quality improvements. For one, our old phone system had 3 lines and no voice-mail and completely hard wired at a cost of $400 per month. Going with a virtual attendant we now have an auto attendant, roving and routing calls directly to our staff’s voice mails. For this we selected Onebox, which provides 12 lines, two incoming numbers, one of which is toll free, for $49.00 per month, saving $4,200 a year. I highly recommend Onebox, as all voice-mails are recorded and delivered to my cell phone and email. All lines send and receive faxes, and I can make changes to the entire system by logging in from any place I am.

RECIPE CORNER

New England Scallop Casserole

Ingredients 12 oz Scallops ¾ cup Half and Half 1 cup dry Ritz Cracker Crumbs ½ cup melted butter 1 teaspoon Celery Salt ½ teaspoon pepper 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice Paprika to sprinkle Arrange scallops in glass baking dish.

Add lemon juice. Pour ½ of the Half and Half over scallops. Mix cracker crumbs, butter, celery salt and pepper. Pour over scallops. Pour rest of Half and Half over mix. Sprinkle Paprika on top. Bake 375 for 30 minutes.

COOK’S NOOK Scallops are bivalve mollusks. They are considered a seafood delicacy by many New Englanders and others.

Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and relatively low in calories, they are an incredibly healthy source of protein.

Some interesting diner conversation: the part you are actually eating is called “the nut.” This is the adductor muscle that opens and closes the shell.

Caution: some scallop fishermen treat their scallops with a solution of sodium tripolyphosphate, or STP, which helps keep the scallop from drying out. Not exactly harmful, but they will be carrying extra water weight you get to pay for by the pound. By law, STP treated scallops must be sold as a “wet pack.”
