Edward J. Doran “The Bingo Queen” 1961 – 2014 Eddie’s family and friends wish to acknowledge his passing and know how deeply his presence will be missed. Dubbed “The Bingo Queen,” during years as a caller at Tool Shed and Score; where he also bartended, his jovial spirit always made daubing a bingo card an event. Eddie was born and raised in Chicago. After high school he entered the Navy and worked as a flight plane mechanic while stationed in San Diego. He is preceded in death by his partner Gary Bondy and is survived by his mother, two brothers and one sister. A memorial fundraiser to defray burial costs will be held at Score on Saturday February 22 from 12 pm to 4 pm. Included will be tributes, a special edition of bingo with a surprise guest caller, games, food and auctions to raise money.

UMI GARRETT, TEEN PIANIST, TO STUN PALM SPRINGS GROUP If we told you a 13-year-old keyboard artist was good enough to stand toe to toe with Vladimir Horowitz, Artur Rubinstein, Van Cliburn, Glen Gould, Lang Lang and all the rest, you’d say we were joking, right? But that’s exactly what Palm Springs Community Concert Association is saying and they challenge you to see (and hear) for yourself on Sunday afternoon March 2. Umi Garrett, who has barely reached her teens, is a true piano virtuoso. She has already appeared with many major symphony orchestras, including the Boston Pops. Ellen DeGeneres sat transfixed watching her perform on the Ellen Show and predicted stardom for Umi who was then just eight years old. Umi will amaze and delight you with her interpretations of beautiful (and difficult) works by Liszt, Chopin and others. How her tiny hands can travel the keyboard with the precision of giants like Franz and Frederic is a wonderment but you have only to visit the PSCCA website to watch a quick preview. Or go to YouTube where Umi has already been a star for the better part of a decade. As amazing as her prodigious talent is the fact that Umi was not born into a musical family. Her mother is a homemaker and her father works in furniture manufacturing. When it was discovered that Umi had this innate gift for music, the family sacrificed greatly to send Umi from her home in Los Angeles to study with Yoshie Akimoto in Connecticut. The effort paid great dividends. As her peers were learning to play “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” seven-year-old Umi was playing Bach, Pereschetti, and most amazingly had mastered Liszt’s showy “Dance of the Gnomes.” She won the Chopin International Piano Competition against children of all ages, garnering the first perfect score in the history of the competition. This concert will take place at 2:30 p.m. on March 3rd in the Palm Springs High School Auditorium, one of the most venerable and distinguished venues in the desert, 2248 E. Ramon Rd., Palm Springs. The seats are comfortable and the prices welcome all. Tickets are available at the door for $20 – or a full season pass for just $50. The Palm Springs Community Concert Association is the oldest performing arts organization in the Coachella Valley, bringing first rate, internationally acclaimed performing artists to the valley for more than half a century. This is the third in a series of four concerts sponsored by the Palm Springs Community Concert Association for 2014– its 55th season in the desert. This grass roots association of music lovers plans and finances its season by advance subscription and offers complimentary reciprocal participation in the concert events of ten other Southern California “sister cities in the Community Concert family. For further information or to become a member, please visit the website: www.psconcerts.org or call the office at 760 770-0774.

FROM THE DESK OF THE PUBLISHER by Will Paige This week will be a celebration of the life of Grounds to watch the games and even Eddie Duran. I would like to thank Mel and the folks at Score, and it seems fitting as this was the last place Eddie worked. I came to know Eddie when he called bingo at the Tool Shed. Palm Springs was a different kind of town back then. Not better or worse, but different. It was perhaps because it was all so new to me. I had come here to vacation, like most others. Like Eddie, we came to love this town and call it our home. We found friends and family here. For gay folks such as I, this is an area like no other. Even today, it is the only pleasure I can give my lover, a romantic gesture like a peck on the cheek or hugging an old friend and not feeling like I should look around first. Eddie was, for me, what all of old Palm Springs gay life was all about. Camp fun, bingo and spending an afternoon with friends at a bar with friends playing bingo as only gays can. I also know of many times when Eddie would help a guy out or take someone into his house to get them on his feet. I write of Eddie because I personally knew him. If the fabric of this town is the lives lived here, past and present, it has become a rich cloth indeed to give us warmth for the days of our lives. This past weekend, the folks at Ed’s Coins hosted a great event at the Empire Polo

get a lesson on how it is played. I would call it hockey on horses, but it’s a bit more complicated. They taught us that each polo team consists of four riders and their mounts, which got quite a chuckle from our table. Polo was formerly, but is not currently, an Olympic sport. The Empire Polo Grounds is also a perfect place to host a large corporate or small intimate event. This event was to benefit the Independent Living Partnership (ILP), organized in 1989 to actively advocate for the Americans with Disabilities Act and worked hard to gain support for the bill prior to its passage into law. ILP was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization in 1991. ILP’s programs and activities benefit the entire community. They help us care for ourselves, our parents and grandparents. Through collaborative and cooperative partnering with public and private organizations, agencies and businesses, ILP programs and services help people lead more satisfying and rewarding lives. For more information, visit ilpconnect.org. Since we were in Indio after the event, we stopped at Shields Date garden for a fresh picked date shake and caught the free film called “The Sex Life of the Date.” From the film we learned where these randy dates

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore Picture it. Palm Springs, California. It was 11:44 pm on February 9th and an article was due. The writer was a shy, young, muffin top kind of a guy (gal on Tuesdays & Saturdays) named Jersey who was having a Birthday in sixteen minutes. Jersey was constantly looking at the clock as if this article was due before Midnight. However, the stroke of midnight was just another year of rings being added to my trunk; just like an old Sequoia.

As I got older, there was a long, tough time when I was unable to celebrate. Today, I am once again excited about my birthday. I am in a good place in my life and I am going to look at this birthday as the first day of good things to come. I will be celebrating that I have a life ahead of me and that I can do what I am designed to do. The best gifts I receive these days are those intended with great energy from the people I encounter in my life.

Just today, though, a calm Peace, Love & Birthdays, and well thought out week of Jersey celebration was had and the actual birth date still hadn’t occurred. As a child, it was just the best thing. I remember having exciting birthdays with my friends. And lots a cake and candy (but no “special brownies”! Not then anyway!). Image and Photo by James Cesena / The iMiJ Factory

Jersey Shore is a drag performer, and can be seen every Saturday at Marina Mac’s Rapture, 9pm, at Level 2, at Bella da Ball Dinner Revue at Azul 7:30pm, and at CCBC on February 15th for Presidents Day Weekend. Contact her at Dragapalooza@aol.com.

It looks like Legends is set to open on Tahquitz now, with some of the newest favorite gay hot spots Oscars and Pinocchio and, of course, the Marilyn statue. Soon, the tourists will be asking which gay section do you want to go to? But since you’re reading the DDG, you already know.

WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS ARIES (March 21-April 19): Spokes on the wheel aren’t always easy to just grease. Toss some elbow work in if you want the gears to turn. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Silence is only golden when it’s warranted. If you see something out of the ordinary, speak your mind. Don’t regret the quiet later. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Cautious and steady isn’t always the most practical of methods. Mix it up a little bit. Taking a risk now and then can pay off. CANCER (June 21-July 22): There’s change in the air. Grasp it now before it escapes out the window. You might not know if there’ll be more on the horizon.

40

LEO (July 23-Aug 22): Test your mind every day. The brain can be just as much a muscle as the rest. But it still needs to be flexed. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sept 22): It can feel like love is just out of reach, but still in the eye’s view. If there’s someone you’re secretly feeling things about, gauge theirs towards you. LIBRA (Sept 23-Oct 22): Every so often, the staleness and stagnation of routine can seem maddening. Tweak a few details here and there to stave off the inanity. SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): Tough times are hardly new, with or without a recession. Tighten up your purse-strings now in order to enjoy the fruits later.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Finding something perplexing? Take a step back and ask for someone else to take a stab. Fresh eyes are better than weary ones. LIBRA (Sept 23-Oct 22): Stress can build up over time if you let yourself bottle it in. Find outliers for the strain. Take a run or hit the gym. Release the excess. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Be smart about your next moves. Life can be a bit like chess; a pawn can become a queen, but it can also be easily slain. PISCES (Feb 19-March 20): Moderation can be your friend just as much as it can be your enemy. Too much and you’re overdoing it. Too little and you feel empty.

SCIENCE OF MIND New Perspectives Chaplaincy Care Giver’s Group Offering Support For Those Who Care for Others. Aid with Housing Issues for Seniors Who Find it Difficult to Live Independently.

This week was full of events and if you look at downtown Palm Springs, there are a lot of great changes happening. Heck, even the president likes it here. As usual, we have got a lot of pictures in this week’s issue and a new first was “Adrian’s Picks” column Our own Adrian met the real world at CCBC, handing out underwear (not used), and gift cards from great locals spots like Q Trading Company, Pinocchio and Rio Azul restaurant. As always, the DDG has the best giveaways. The show was a hit with DJ Corey of PNN and performances lead by the incomparable Jersey Shore, Gregg Heyer and Fabeyonce Cruz were all great. If you would like a free visit from Adrian with DDG giveaways for your event, give us a call today. For those that don’t know, Adrian is the newest columnist along with Jersey Shore, and we are looking for some more hip, new writers and photographers as we take the DDG to the next generation.

KNOW YOUR MASSAGES... • Hot stone massages are almost pretty well self-explanatory: they use hot stones, usually made of marble and soaked in warm-to-hot water, to massage your body. • Reiki massage was developed by a Japanese Buddhist, and is also known as hands-on massage. It involves precise hand movements and placing. • Thai massage originated in Thailand, naturally, and pulls from a number of styles from all over south-eastern Asia. It relies on straight arms that tend to follow the body’s natural lines, though it covers the whole body, and may include walking on one’s back! 48

RECIPE CORNER

Spinach & Cheese Stuffed Flank Steak

Ingredients Flank Steak 1 package of frozen spinach or fresh 1 package of shredded Swiss cheese 1 clove Garlic 1 Onion 1 Tablespoon Oil 1 can of Mushrooms or fresh Beef Granules String, 2 – 3 pieces Sautee onion, garlic & mushrooms, then add cheese. Put oil in pan, place string in pan, then place steak in pan. Spread mixture on steak, roll up and tie with string. Cook at 350 for about 45 minutes.

COOK’S NOOK It’s often neglected by people relatively new to cooking, but meat temperature is the difference between an awesome, savory meal your friends and family will rave about and a visit to the emergency room for a bout of food poisoning. First off, before you cook your meat (be it chicken, pork, etc.), make sure the meat is clean and smells fresh. If it’s gray, it’s best to toss it. Also, make sure you have a meat thermometer handy. It will come in, well, handy. Now, cook the meat at the temperature suggested in your recipe at the suggested time frame of the recipe. Once done, use the meat thermometer and push it into the center, and not all the way through. Follow the internal temperature chart (you can find one on the internet). Once the meat matches the desired temp, you’ve hit the jackpot! It’s ready to serve, and your guests will be happy!
