National Tour of Horseless

SUMMER 2017

Parking for this event will be available in the overflow lot of the upper level.

Carriage Club of America M

any collector car clubs recognize specialty marques or a broad spectrum of makes and years of manufacture. Very few represent the dawning of the age of the automobile industry. This unique period of automotive history covers the turn of the century to the end of carriage coachwork, gas lights, hand cranking, and profuse use of brass. For the most part, only the wealthy owned automobiles during this pre-1916 era, and ownership required a pioneering spirit, inventiveness, and superior mechanical ability to keep the machines functioning! These automobiles were called ‘horseless carriages’ as they were capable of transporting people and freight faster and over longer distances without the need of a horse to pull them. The HCCA’s 2017 BBC Tour, in its 16th year, takes place in Lancaster County the week of May 21. The tourists will drive routes of 65 to 80 miles per day around Lancaster, Chester, York, and Dauphin Counties, with an excursion into northern Delaware. The BBC Tour, now known as Beautiful Brass Cars, originated in Bucks County PA, (as Brass in Bucks) and as the years passed, moved into Berks and finally Lancaster County. The BBC is one of the largest annual national events for Horseless Carriages in the

United States. Participants typically represent 20 states, three Canadian provinces, Europe, and Australia. Makes represented include Packard, Pierce-Arrow, REO, Cadillac, Buick, Overland, EMF, Hupmobile, Hudson, Studebaker, and of course Ford. On Thursday, May 25, the cars will be visiting Willow Valley Communities, making their entrance by touring through the North (9:15 a.m.) and Lakes Campus’ with a final destination at the Cultural Center from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. where the cars will be

on display in the upper level parking lot. You are invited to mingle in the Cultural Center upper level parking lot to take a closer look at the cars, talk to the drivers, and take a chance to win a ride in one of the cars! MAY 25 Thursday, 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Operas Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci

Mariss Jansons Conducts Bruckner and Haydn

Length: 2 hour 29 minutes

Length: 1 hour 45 minutes

Sung in Italian with English subtitles.

In many ways, Haydn and Bruckner appear to be polar opposites. Haydn was a self-assured professional who wrote music for weddings and parties just as easily as he did for great noblemen, while Bruckner plodded along laboriously, often plagued by feelings of insecurity. Despite their differences, both produced outstanding music. Long thought to be lost, Haydn’s Concerto for Cello was rediscovered in 1961. Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 was born of a long and laborious process, in a difficult composition year with multiple professional failures.

Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci performed together at the Teatro Real de Madrid, with Violeta Urmana and Maria Bayo. Cavalleria Rusticana. Turiddu becomes engaged to Santuzza, but continues an affair with a former lover. Santuzza tries to persuade Turiddu to return, but he violently rejects her proposal. I Pagliacci. Nedda is seeing Silvio. Her husband Canio tries to make Nedda reveal the name of her lover. The contemptuous attitude she shows infuriates him so much that Canio pulls a knife on her. Silvio rushes to her aid, but they both fall victim to Canio’s knife.

Michelangelo Love and Death Length: 1 hour 30 minutes Through expert commentary and Michelangelo’s own words, this film takes a fresh look at an enigmatic man. A virtuoso craftsman, Michelangelo’s artistry is evident in everything he touched. Beautiful and diverse works such as the towering statue David, the deeply moving Pietà in the Papal Basilica of St. Peter, and his tour de force, the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Spanning his 89 years, take a cinematic journey from the print and drawing rooms of Europe, through the great chapels and museums of Florence, and into Rome and the Vatican to explore the tempestuous life of Michelangelo.

AUG 10 Thursday, 1:30 p.m.

Nicholas Angelich Performs Bach, Chopin, and Schumann Length: 1 hour 36 minutes Never rough or austere, Nicholas Angelich’s musical game excels during slow movements. Behind the mask of soft appearances lies a pianist who possesses a passionate and majestic skill. Introducing his recital with the profoundness of a Bach chorale, and with the contrapuntal rigor of a suite for piano, Nicholas Angelich soars to the incredible heights of the romantic repertoire. The pianist plays Chopin’s Nocturnes and delights the audience with some of the famous Polish composer’s etudes. Using his unique sense of rhythmic energy, he concludes the recital with the fascinating and worrying Kreisleriana by Schumann.

AUG 24 Thursday, 1:30 p.m.

Europakonzert with Daniel Barenboim Length: 1 hour 40 minutes Every year on the 1st of May, the Berliner Philharmoniker celebrates the anniversary of its fouding. Taking place in a European city iconic for its cultural life, this Europakonzert takes place at the Berliner Philharmoniker’s home: the Berliner Philharmonie. Celebrating its 132nd birthday under the baton of Maestro Daniel Barenboim, who debuted with the orchestra 50 years ago. The concert opens with Otto Nicolai’s Overture to Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor (The Merry Wives of Windsor), inspired by William Shakespeare’s comedy of the same name. In keeping with the theme of William Shakespeare, Edward Elgar’s famous Falstaff follows. The concert closes with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s most famous symphony, the Fifth Symphony.

Marita Hines Realizing her lifelong dream to become a full-time artist, Marita’s life is now filled with artist friends and inspirational workshops. Her watercolors are snapshots of her life: the beautiful countryside she sees on her daily travels and a bit of the world beyond. She gains much of her inspiration from other artists and teachers. Her hope is that her art and the good life it portrays bring a little joy and inspiration to those who experience it. Although Marita has no formal art education, she has found her way with the help of artist friends and mentors. She improves her skills and creativity through workshops and membership in plein air and drawing groups. Over the years, she has experimented with oils and ink, but her favorite medium by far is watercolor. Marita enjoys the entire process beginning with the hunt for the perfect subject matter, the decisions about layout and color choices and how to present the subject so the viewer feels a familiarity or can picture themselves a part of the painting.

Charlie Haughey Charlie Haughey is a retired carpenter who served a tour of duty with the Army 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam from 1968-1969. While stationed there, he captured nearly 3,000 photographs, and brought the negatives and slides home to Michigan once discharged. He put the photos in boxes for nearly 45 years before a chance meeting with producer Kris Regentin in Portland, OR, brought the images out of storage and into a film scanner. A gallery showing and book of the photographs has garnered international attention, and the collection has been praised for its intimate and dramatic behind the scenes look at life in the 25th Infantry Division. The book and gallery showing, titled A Weather Walked In, aims to preserve the collection of nearly 50-year-old negatives. The offset-print coffee table book contains 117 images from the collection, printed and produced in Portland, OR. An accompanying iOS book for iPhone and iPad contains 155 images with audio commentary from Charlie. Prints from the collection include 11" x 14" silver gelatin fiber paper prints, as well as eleven 60” x 40” limited edition silver gelatin fiber paper prints framed in frames handmade by Charlie from reclaimed material. The silver gelatin prints are framed using museum quality technique and are made to be fine art heirlooms. Charlie’s photography will be featured in the acclaimed upcoming Ken Burn’s PBS documentary, for which Willow Valley Communities is a Gold Sponsor, on our local network WITF. Charlie will also be joining us at Willow Valley as a presenter to feature his photography and his experiences (learn more on page 28).

Ross Sachs “The guidance of few, influence from many, the persistence to improve and the gift from above have influenced my work along my path. It continues to be a meandering path with wonderful stories along the way.” As an early student of art at Franklin & Marshall College and Millersville University, art began with calligraphy for Ross Sachs. The use of angles and lines of ink led to shadows and shading with line. Tone from line led to shading with airbrush. The airbrush took him into automobile hood designs and van murals. Airbrush eventually led to topographical maps. Maps led to illustrations and meeting some of the best illustrators in the business. Ultimately, this led him to collecting original illustration. Holding and carefully studying originals led him back to the beginning. That beginning was adding tone after tone to a surface which became the finished art, but in reverse. Ross’s paintings are all “painted” in a method that actually involves the removal of the paint: first, applying oil paint and then using paper towels to remove it. This process is a method similar to his mapmaking training, in reverse. Ross’s sole intent is to capture the mood of light and the feelings from a moment. “My favorite time of day is when the day is coming to a close and there’s a warm glow to everything. It’s peaceful and invites you to relax. You just hope it happens again tomorrow.”

The Vietnam Project The Vietnam War was one of the most polarizing events in American history. Over 3,000 Pennsylvanians were killed in action, with many more listed missing. Over 20,000 displaced Vietnamese refugees started their American journey at a temporary refugee resettlement center at Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County. Central Pennsylvania is home to veterans, activists, refugees, service men and women’s families, and civilians who supported our military. We all have a story to tell. WITF, our local PBS Station, is launching Vietnam War Stories, an in-depth multimedia look at the Vietnam War to explore how it impacted South Central Pennsylvania. Through regional and statewide collaborative partnerships, they are telling the stories of people in our region who were touched by one of the longest wars in United States history. It all leads up to the landmark documentary event The Vietnam War, a film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, premiering on WITF TV in September 2017. Willow Valley Communities is proud to be the Gold Sponsor for this project and in support of this landmark presentation we will be hosting multiple events to explore this time period in history and honor those who courageously fought for freedom.

The Premiere of The Vietnam War, a film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick In an immersive narrative, Ken Burns and Lynn Novick tell the epic story of the Vietnam War as it has never before been told on film. The Vietnam War features testimony from nearly 100 witnesses, including many Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as Vietnamese combatants and civilians from both the winning and losing sides. This highly anticipated, 18-hour documentary will be airing on WITF in a 10-part series on September 17 - 21 and 24 - 28, 2017. Willow Valley will be holding an exclusive premiere in the Cultural Center Theater prior to the television broadcast. The premiere will feature segments from the documentary and will be hosted by WITF on-air personalities. Don’t miss the rare opportunity to preview this much-acclaimed series before anyone else.
