CULTURAL CENTER THEATER GUIDELINES • To make a reservation, please fill out the Reservation Request Form on the reverse side of this page. It is not necessary to cut, fold, staple, tape or put it into an envelope; simply put it into the mail as is. • If you would like to sit with someone, it is important to include their reservation information on your form in the appropriate location. Each party will be billed separately unless instructed otherwise. • There will be shuttle service for all of the shows. For evening shows, tokens and an evening shuttle schedule can be picked up from the lobby in your community two days before the show. For daytime shows, please follow the Blue Route schedule. On-demand transportation will continue running until after the show is over. • If you would like to attend a show, but do not have a ticket, you may call the box office at 464.6433 to check availability. Typically, tickets are returned the evening of the show. You are encouraged to come to the ticket window to purchase a ticket. • Arrive early enough to be seated before the lights dim. Walking into the darkened theater, down the aisle, and into your seat is not safe. It disturbs not only the audience, but the performer as well. Late seating will not be permitted. • Seat locations printed on your tickets are not guaranteed after the start of the performance. • Perfume – Some people are highly allergic to aromas. Kindly keep colognes and perfumes to a minimum. • Turn off all cell phones. • No flash photography.

Hector Olivera, Organist Hector Olivera is a passionate, gifted, and unique musician, whose personal interpretations of both classical and popular music have amazed and delighted audiences around the world. Although he is most famous for his prodigious technical proficiency, Hector Olivera’s amazing effect on audiences has made him one of the greatest organists in the world today. He has performed as guest soloist with many orchestras, including the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Fort Wayne Symphony, the Dover-New Philadelphia Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Amsterdam Baroque Ensemble, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Pasadena Symphony. He has also recorded more than 20 classical, contemporary and film score transcriptions.

Donald Davis takes his listeners on a journey through his rural North Carolina mountain community, meeting friends, neighbors, and family members along the way. It was Uncle Frank, a man who “talked in stories,” who helped Donald capture the real and daily adventures of life. And that is the way that Donald has approached all of his learning places...as a student at Davidson College; as a graduate of Duke University Divinity School; as a retired Methodist minister; as former Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the National Storytelling Association; as featured teller at the Smithsonian Institution, the World’s Fair, as a guest host for National Public Radio’s Good Evening. For Donald Davis, storytelling is a way of giving and living life. He invites each listener to come along, to personally share and co-create the common experiences that celebrate the creative spirit.

River City Brass
Yo ho ho! Merry Christmas! Go into Christmas overdrive with River City Brass. Their traditional Christmas Brasstacular combines all that’s great in music during the festive season. There will be carols, Santa and his elves, and, of course, their own special brand of humor and fun. A merry Christmas is guaranteed. River City Brass performs a 56-concert series in eight different venues in Western Pennsylvania. In addition, the 28-piece ensemble tours extensively throughout the United States, with more than 40 performances each year as part of community concert series, major symphony pops series, and arts festivals. From California to New York (as well as everywhere in between), River City Brass Band has delighted audiences with its signature style. Every performance features superb soloists and powerful repertoire from classical to pops and from jazz to marches. A River City Brass performance, whether in Pittsburgh or Poughkeepsie or Pensacola, is a memorable event.

U.S. Army Chorus The U.S. Army Chorus was established in 1956 as the vocal counterpart of The U.S. Army Band and is one of the nation’s only professional, all-male choruses. From its inception, The Army Chorus has established and maintained a reputation of excellence in the performance of male choral literature. Beyond the traditional military music and patriotic standards, the repertoire of The Chorus covers a broad spectrum that includes pop, Broadway, folk, and classical music. The Chorus often performs at the White House for functions hosted by the Departments of State and is a standard at events for each presidential inaugural. The men of The Chorus, most of whom hold advanced degrees in music, are selected from the nation’s finest musicians. DEC 14

Cultural Center Chorale In their 14th season, our very own Willow Valley Cultural Center Chorale celebrates the holiday season in this inspiring and entertaining performance event. One hundred voices strong, they’ll sing holiday classics and familiar songs of the season for both Christmas and Hanukkah. Edith Head – Hollywood’s Guru of Fashion Design Between the years of 1933 and 1978, Edith Head was nominated for 35 Oscars and won 8 of the coveted trophies. Movies such as All About Eve, A Place In The Sun, Roman Holiday, Sabrina, and The Sting are but a few of the productions displaying Edith Head creations. Come and explore the world of the all-time “Queen of Fashion Design,” Edith Head. After the lecture enjoy a private luncheon to celebrate Edith. Riccardo Chailly Conducts Mahler Symphony No. 8 Length: 1 hour 32 minutes Sung in Latin and German with English subtitles. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Gustav Mahler’s death, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and acclaimed musical director Riccardo Chailly, closed the International Mahler Festival in Leipzig performing Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, the “Symphony of a Thousand.” To perform Mahler’s brilliant Symphony No. 8 requires one of the largest orchestras of any work in the symphonic repertoire, Chailly conducted 500 musicians. This symphony, composed in 1906, is one of the longest of Mahler’s symphonies, after the third and the first.

Anoushka Shankar: Traveller - Gypsy Music from India to Spain Length: 2 hour 12 minutes In Girona, Spain, the superlative sitarist Anoushka Shankar enlisted top players from India and Spain to record Traveller, retracing the thousand-year-old bond between Indian and Spanish musical traditions in both music and dance — as befits the innovative legacy of her father and mentor, the great Ravi Shankar. With traditional instruments from India and Spain, Shankar’s ensemble condenses Gypsy music’s thousand-year migration from India to Europe into one exceptional performance, where Andalusian flamencos and Carnatic ragas merge seamlessly. Sophisticated and original, this journey reveals a missing link between Zakir Hussain and Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana.

Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’amore Denis Matsuev Plays Length: 2 hour 1 minutes Schumann and Sung in Italian with English subtitles. Rachmaninov A pastoral romance between Adina (Ekaterina Siurina), the rich and gorgeous landowner, and Nemorino (Peter Auty), a simple peasant, in love with Adina, L’Elisir d’amore (The Elixir of Love) sets Tristan and Iseult’s love potion at the center of the action. Donizetti wrote dozens of operas, but he is mostly famous today for five works that are regularly performed in the greatest opera theatres around the world. All five were composed within ten years: L’Elisir d’amore (1832), Lucia di Lammermoor (1835), La Fille du régiment (1840), La Favorite (1840) and Don Pasquale (1843). Heir of Rossini, Donizetti is at the same time a “child of the century,” a Romantic poet whose taste for the bel canto made him a rival of Bellini, another composer from Catania. Like Bellini, Donizetti provided the lyric repertoire with beautiful arias heard in L’Elisir d’amore. DEC 1

On the stage of the Salle des Combins in Verbier, Denis Matsuev, nicknamed the “Siberian Bear,” astonishes his audience with a program dedicated to Schumann and Rachmaninov. Greatly acclaimed for his interpretations, Matsuev concluded this recital with an incredible series of encores by Rossini, Tchaikovsky, Duke Ellington or Shchedrin – the best opportunity to admire the beautiful and various shades of Matsuev’s capabilities.

William Ressler was born on a farm near Chestnut Level in southern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He attended schools in Drumore and Quarryville,PA, before enlisting in the Army Specialized Reserve Training Program where he was assigned to the Virginia Military Institute for three semesters studying Basic Engineering. After serving in the Philippines with the 29th Engineers Topographic Battalion, he decided not to pursue engineering but to become an artist instead. He enrolled in the Philadelphia College of Art, majoring in Illustration. After graduating from PCA (now the University of the Arts), he became a freelance illustrator and painter in the Philadelphia area, executing commissions for a variety of editorial, corporate, institutional, and architectural clients. Also a graduate of Philadelphia Biblical University (now Cairn University), his art portraying Biblical themes, has been published internationally. Mr. Ressler is a member of the American Watercolor Society and a life member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society. Ressler’s drawings and paintings are included in several private, corporate, and university collections. This year he will participate in a House and Garden tour portraying a historic house in Chester County.

Doris Davis-Glackin, nws, twsa Doris lives and works on a portion of the historic Brandywine Battlefield in Chester County, Pennsylvania. She is the recipient of numerous national and international awards. Jurors note that vibrant color and strong design are hallmarks of her work. Her paintings are frequently selected for national travelling shows and appear in museums and colleges throughout the United States. Doris’ work has been represented in major exhibitions, including The American Watercolor Society of America. She is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, The Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, and a signature member of ten other national watercolor societies. Doris serves on the Board of the historic Howard Pyle Studios in Wilmington, Delaware. In March, 2014, Doris’ painting Winter Nightfall was awarded Best in Show at the Delaware Foundation for the Visual Arts exhibition held at The Hagley Museum in Wilmington, Delaware. Ebru Workshop Create a unique silk scarf by instantly capturing a colorful design of ink floating on water. This technique, called Ebru, is a classic marbling technique making one-of-a-kind art. You will be amazed at the process. By choosing from a wide variety of colors, liquid paints are placed on top of a thickened transparent fluid bath, creating a unique color palette, which is then manipulated to create an endless array of designs using combs, rakes and hand held styluses. Finally, a single print of the composed design is transferred to a 15x72 inch silk scarf. Mr. Adams, through his work in black and white photography, popularized images of Yosemite National Park, Native Americans, and the great American West. A Celebration of Light – Marc Chagall During the Middle Ages, stained glass windows in the great cathedrals reminded individuals of the great stories of the Bible. The stained glass pictures became an educational instrument and gave encouragement during bleak and depressing times. As times passed, the stained glass offered a palette in which the artist could express himself in many ways. Movie: To Kill A Mockingbird In 1960, the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee was published, becoming the most widely read book dealing with race in America. The book was quickly followed by the movie in 1960 which won 3 Academy Awards. Gregory Peck played the lawyer, Atticus Finch, winning male actor of the year. Come and enjoy this landmark movie and also gain background information on Gregory Peck and the film itself. Angels in our Midst During the holiday season, angels become very commonplace in writing and illustrations. However, angels are a part of our everyday life and are quite prominent in many religions. The Other “Good War”: A 20-Year Perspective on the American Intervention in Bosnia This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the end of the Bosnian War – the worst outbreak of violence in Europe since World War II. American political and military leadership played a key role in the peaceful resolution of the conflict. This program takes a look back at the causes of the war, the scale of human suffering which it brought, and the lengthy postwar effort to promote stability, civil order, and ethnic reconciliation. The presenter will augment the historical account with personal insights from his service with the multinational peacekeeping force in Bosnia in 2002-03. Revisiting Atticus Finch – Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman In late 2014, a wonderful literary discovery was made in Monroeville, Alabama. A manuscript, written by Harper Lee, was assumed to be lost prior to her writing To Kill A Mockingbird. That manuscript was rediscovered and is now published under the title Go Set A Watchman. This presentation will focus on the author, the new book, the earlier bestseller (To Kill A Mockingbird), as well as the famous movie to create a complete picture of the creative world of Harper Lee. Understanding Islam A faith, a culture, and a political movement – Islam has represented all of these throughout history. Many Americans find the subject of Islam mysterious, even worrisome, as they view the rise of extremist terrorist movements across the globe. This two-part program seeks to promote a broad, objective understanding of the world’s second-largest religion. Among the topics to be covered are the life of its charismatic founder, the Prophet Muhammad; its core rituals and beliefs; its sectarian diversity; the rise and fall of Muslim power and influence in the Second Millennium; and the issues posed by a reinvigorated Islam today. Life Reflections Life Reflections is a monthly series in which the presenters share stories about an amazing aspect of their life story. All sessions are held in the Cultural Center Education Room. Potato Chip Packaging: A Brief History and a Bit of the Science The potato chip was “invented” or developed about 1822 in England. And there is a fascinating story about its development in the USA in 1853, though there are references to the potato chip in the USA as early as 1824. Tin cans, waxed paper, glassine, and cellophane have all been used to get the potato chips from the factory to the consumer. In the mid-1990s, a sophisticated lamination of complex polypropylene films developed into the basic package we know today.
34 Years in Healthcare and a Love for Dogs Kendall Hunsicker has been with Willow Valley Communities for 16 years and the VP of Healthcare Services for over 14 of them. Before that she was the Regional Director of Clinical Information Management for St. Joseph Health System in Reading, PA. She was recently awarded the Eli Pick Facility Leadership Award from the American College of Healthcare Administrators, which recognizes
healthcare administrators whose teams have achieved exceptional levels of organizational quality. Kendall plans to share lessons learned along her 34 year career in healthcare as well as personal stories including her and her husband’s love for dogs and their cockapoo, Sullivan Theodore Hunsicker. Witness to History: The Selma March for Voting Rights March 7 of this year marked the 50th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday” in Selma, Alabama—the day state troopers and local posse men viciously beat and gassed 600 marchers bearing a voting rights petition to Gov. George Wallace. When Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called for volunteers to replace the fallen Dr. Richard Vieth was one of those who responded. He will share his experience of the warm hospitality and inspiring witness of Selma’s African-American community, his fear facing a phalanx of baton-wielding troopers blocking the march, and the triumphant arrival and huge rally on the steps of the state capitol. Hurricane Katrina: Remembering a Disaster Ten years ago, in late August 2005, the Gulf Coast experienced the worst natural disaster in U.S. history: Hurricane Katrina. Media images of death and destruction galvanized the nation, while government officials came under sharp criticism for their erratic response to the crisis. This program takes a look back at the storm itself, reviews the scope of human suffering which it brought, and examines the long-term social, political, and economic consequences of the disaster. Most of us can determine the approximate age of 20th century photographs — even if we do not know the people in the picture — based on clothing, hairstyles, automobiles, and other identifying clues. But 19th century photos are often a mystery. There were so many different types of photographs — daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, carte de visite, and cabinet cards — and nothing about their clothing or hair styles is familiar to us. Whether you are stumped by old photographs of your family, or have a general interest in old pictures, you will learn some quick and easy tips to determine what type of photographs you have, how to date them, and, often, how to identify the people in the photographs.
