• Transportation will be provided for all shows. For evening shows, the shuttle will make continuous runs on each campus beginning at 5:40 p.m. (Manor Campus) and 5:45 p.m. (Lakes Campus). At the end of the program, buses will run until all Residents have returned to their drop-off location.

Tom Chapin & Friends Tom Chapin & Friends are masters of over a dozen instruments, captivating audiences with their rich harmonies, dynamic versatility, and infectious warmth. Known for his soulful vocals and multi-instrumental talents, Chapin performs on banjo, Autoharp, and both 6- and 12-string guitars. His career spans six decades, nearly 30 albums, and three Grammy Awards. In addition to being a recording artist, he is well-known as a concert performer, storyteller, and steadfast advocate for the arts, justice, and environmental sustainability.

Accompanying Chapin on vocals are Jon Cobert (piano, keyboards, accordion) and Michael Mark (bass, concertina, marimba, guitar), both five-time Grammy nominees. This band will dazzle you with their full sound and good humor.

The Fabulous Greaseband The Fabulous Greaseband will get you on your feet with the greatest songs from the 1950s to 1990s! This seven-member rock ’n’ roll band performs extensively along the East Coast, delivering more than 200 highly entertaining and energetic shows each year.

The success enjoyed by the Greaseband has not come by chance. Aside from the members’ unique blend of talents, the band’s friendship and humor offstage translate to spontaneous and infectious fun onstage. This, coupled with an extensive repertoire, gives them incredible flexibility in any situation. Get ready to groove to the sounds of doo-wop, Motown, disco, and more with the Fabulous Greaseband!

The Jeff Little Trio Prepare yourself for an unforgettable musical experience! Renowned for their dynamic live performances, the award-winning Jeff Little Trio blends the rich traditions of Appalachian and Americana music with an innovative edge.

Led by virtuoso pianist and vocalist Jeff Little, the group also features Luke Little on mandolin and Steve Lewis on guitar, banjo, and vocals. Jeff’s piano playing is deeply rooted in the musical traditions of the Blue Ridge Mountains, but his unique style — often compared to the legendary Doc Watson’s — brings a fresh perspective to Appalachian music. Steve adds a rich layer of complexity to the trio’s sound with his intricate picking and soulful vocals, while Luke’s harmonies and skillful mandolin bring a youthful energy and a modern twist.

Japanese Culture Event Join us for a multiday cultural event! Share in traditions, experience cuisine, and celebrate the richness of Japanese culture. Programs and classes will be held throughout the week at the Cultural Center and Chautauqua Hall.

Radio Taiso Radio taiso (radio calisthenics) were first introduced to Japan in 1928 and were widely used to improve the health of the country’s soldiers at home and abroad. The broadcasts were banned after 1945, but after several rewrites, the exercise routine was reintroduced in 1951. For over 70 years, the calisthenics routine has been aired every day at 6:30 a.m., playing an important role in the Japanese population’s morning routine and often used to explain its impressive life expectancy.

The Art & Cultivation of Bonsai

Four Seasons in Japanese Life: Through Nature, Art & Culture Like Pennsylvanians, the Japanese enjoy the change of seasons. The idea of wabi-sabi, meaning “imperfection and impermanence,” which the Japanese appreciate, holds an important place in their culture. Aya, originally from Tokyo, will discuss the daily lives of Japanese people and their traditional events and arts, such as cherry blossom festivals and tea ceremonies. She will also talk about the environment, including natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunami that constantly reinforce the idea of wabi-sabi.

Learn about bonsai, starting with a brief history. Then the presenter will discuss the aesthetics and horticulture of bonsai by reviewing practical approaches that provide the illusion of age, tips on how to care for developing bonsai, and do’s and don’ts for general health. Examples of different inspirational styles will be provided to show the diversity associated with bonsai design, and techniques used in the development of a bonsai will be demonstrated with live material.

Japanese Tea Ceremony Sachiko Houck will demonstrate a Chado (tea ceremony), a Japanese tradition that has been practiced for over 400 years. Born in Fukuoka, Japan, she has a strong background in the “way of the tea,” learning from her mother during her early years and continuing her studies with Chado Urasenke Tankokai in Philadelphia.

This class will introduce the cultural aspects of the tea ceremony and incorporate the four principles of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. Sachiko will explain matcha tea, the history of Chado, and modern Chado in Japan, then demonstrate making tea for a guest according to a procedure known as temae.

Japanese Folk Dance Institute of New York Founded in 1992, the Japanese Folk Dance Institute of New York promotes Japan’s rich history of traditional folk dances, helping to ensure the preservation of an invaluable cultural legacy. The group’s founder and director, Momo Suzuki, has performed and taught for more than 40 years, appearing at countless venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Taiko Drums

Taiko Drum Workshop

Used to initiate religious ceremonies, set the marching pace for troops, and call soldiers to the battlefield since 10,000 BC, wooden, barrel-shaped taiko drums symbolize the powerful, rhythmic, and dynamic energy of Japanese percussion. To experience a taiko performance is to witness lively shouts and choreographed movements from performers that mirror those of various Japanese martial arts.

Taiko is a dynamic art form based on traditional Japanese drumming. This workshop is designed to introduce the basics of taiko technique, kumi-daiko (ensemble drumming), awareness of ki (energy), use of koe (voice), and history and philosophy — all while having a good time! No experience is necessary, but come ready for a workout! All are welcome to watch the workshop, but those who would like to participate must register.

Mark H. Rooney — “the world’s most dangerous half-Japanese/half-Scottish solo improvisational taiko artist” — has been studying, performing, and teaching taiko for the past 25 years. He was the artistic director of Odaiko New England, the founding instructor for Wesleyan University’s taiko program, and a touring member of Taikoza.

Ballet: The Little Mermaid Relive the marvelous adventures of the little mermaid heroine in this tale by Hans Christian Andersen, performed at Prague’s National Theatre in a poetic ballet choreographed by Jan Kodet and scored by Czech contemporary composer Zbyněk Matějů. This interpretation follows the troubled mermaid on a journey between the divergent worlds of land and sea — one utterly complex, the other magnificently serene. A fantastic performance, staged by the brilliant scenic duo of Martin Kukučka and Lukáš Trpišovský!

Exhibition On Screen: I, Claude Monet Monet’s life is a gripping tale of a man who, behind his sun-dazzled canvases, suffered from feelings of depression, loneliness, even suicide. However, as his art developed and his love of gardening led to the glories of his Giverny garden, his humor, insight, and love of life bloomed. Told through Monet’s own words and shot on location at the very spots he painted, this film features his most loved paintings in an unforgettable, immersive art experience.

Denis Matsuev Plays Schumann & Rachmaninov At the 2012 Verbier Festival, pianist Denis Matsuev, the “Siberian Bear,” wowed audiences with this recital of works by Schumann and Rachmaninov. Featured are Schumann’s Kinderszenen, Op. 15 and Symphonic Études, Op. 13, as well as four from Rachmaninov, including Études-tableaux, Op. 39 and Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 36. Acclaimed for his interpretations of repertoire of all kinds, he closed with an incredible series of encore pieces, from Rossini to Tchaikovsky — and even an improvisation on Duke Ellington’s Take the A Train!

Massenet’s Werther In Jules Massenet’s opera masterpiece based on Goethe’s Sorrows of Young Werther, tears flow from the moment the moonlit set is revealed. Charlotte cannot hold back the tears as she rereads Werther’s letters. They flow in front of Sophie, the angel of consolation. They flow when Werther reads the poetry of Ossian. And finally, they flow at the sight of Werther’s blood-soaked body. Yet Werther refuses these last tears, for now he is happy and free. Starring German opera singer Jonas Kaufmann and French soprano Sophie Koch, Werther is a long requiem for a young poet, ending in paradisum.

Neeme Järvi & Khatia Buniatishvili Perform Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3 At the 2011 Verbier Festival, all eyes were on rising piano star Khatia Buniatishvili. She debuted with the Verbier Festival Orchestra in Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3, a work as lyrical as it is powerful and technically difficult. Several days later, she performed a solo recital of works by Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt, playing Liszt’s Sonata in B minor to celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth. At just 24, Buniatishvili performed these challenging works with such ease, it’s unsurprising her debut album had just received a CHOC from Classica magazine.

Exhibition On Screen: Cézanne, Portraits of a Life This documentary transports audiences to the places Cézanne lived and worked, shedding light on the artist who is perhaps the least well-known — and most misunderstood — of all the Impressionists. Based on the landmark Cézanne Portraits exhibition, the film spotlights the artist’s portraiture and features interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery, London; MoMA, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington; and Orsay Museum, Paris; as well as correspondence from the artist himself.

Christi Hetrick, Oils From the artist: Creating art brings me such joy, especially when I paint outdoors. In that moment, it’s just me in God’s beautiful creation with my paintbrush ready to capture whatever catches my eye. The most amazing aspect of being an artist is how it has changed the way I view nature, people, and even ordinary objects. Found objects — like vintage trucks and tractors, water lilies in ponds, bridges and barns, or old, rusty buckets — become inspiration. Light and shadow play an important role in my work. I especially enjoy rendering reflections in water.

I am originally from Bucks County, but now enjoy residing in Lititz and exploring Lancaster County. My mother is also a fine artist. We even went to the same art school, Tyler School of Art (Temple University).

Christiane David, Oils From the artist: I started painting as a small girl in Belgium and later studied architecture. But because I have always felt the need to express myself on canvas, I continued my studies in watercolors and oils at the Academy of Art in Brussels, where I was influenced by many of the European Impressionists.

While my style is free and spontaneous, technique is the tool I always keep in the back of my mind. I like to take advantage of the fact that when I paint without fear and follow my instincts, magical things happen. I love to experiment and go deeper into the world of color and often push it to the point where there are no rules to follow. I feel that color has a strong effect on our minds. Whether it is uplifting and happy or serene and relaxing, color can have a powerful impact on all of us.

For me, painting is a very emotional process, and I am inspired to paint whatever is happening in my life at that moment. I strongly believe that painting can be the path to meeting your real self. But this process is only complete for me if I have been able to give the viewer a glimpse into the very soul of the subject.

12 Extraordinary Greek Gods & Goddesses Ancient Greece has garnered acclaim for producing some of the greatest philosophers, poets, architects, and artists the world has ever seen. For its people, the cosmos was ordered by 12 omnipotent beings, the Olympiads, who dwelled atop the highest mountain of the land. This diverse body of deities was believed to control natural phenomena, creative (and destructive) activities, and even some aspects of human behavior.

This lecture explores the nature of these gods and goddesses — both loved and feared by the Greeks — who inspired the creation of magnificent temples, artworks, plays, poems, and philosophical treatises still admired today. Professor Tobin will focus particularly on Zeus, the king; Apollo, the god of light, music, and disease; and Dionysus, whose devotees achieved ecstasy through wine and dance.

Pirates: Separating Fact from Fiction The so-called Golden Age of Piracy was a time of heightened piratical activity in the Atlantic Ocean between 1650 and 1730. Infamous pirates like Black Sam Bellamy, Captain Kidd, Anne Bonny, and Blackbeard operated in and around the port cities of the colonial Atlantic world, ports that were crucial to regional and global economies.

This unusual lecture will take you back to learn more about these outlaws of the sea, including the dangerous lives they led, their motivations to enter a world of intrigue, and the treasures they plundered. What enabled pirates to flourish for nearly a century, and what led to their decline? Who were they, and who were they secretly working for? Did they really have peg legs and eye patches, bury their treasure, and force their victims to walk the plank? How did they become “Disney-fied”?

Paris through the Window, Marc Chagall, 1913

Marc Chagall: An Artful Life Throughout Marc Chagall’s long career, his work retained a kind of youthful exuberance — one of the many reasons his imagery is so beloved. His scenes reflect the many important historical and artistic moments he experienced, including both World Wars and Paris at the heyday of Cubism.

Along the way, he merged subjects and themes recollected from a childhood in modern-day Belarus with the complexities inspired by the avant-garde communities around him, ultimately visualizing a world filled with love, wonder, and imagination.

How did a young boy — barely past the toddler phase — demonstrate such facility and creativity at the keyboard? What about his unusual sense of humor, which featured a decidedly scatological quality?

(For many early biographers, this latter point was difficult to manage.) What was the nature of his relationship with Freemasonry, and how does it manifest in his music? Finally, this lecture will consider what is perhaps the greatest mystery in Mozart’s life: the story of his Requiem, which remained unfinished at the time of his death.

The history of our nation’s restaurants reflects nothing less than the history of America itself. In this fascinating talk, food historian and professor Paul Freedman will chart the birth of our first restaurant, Delmonico’s in New York; the rise of our love of Chinese food through San Francisco’s fabled Mandarin; the richness of Italian food through Mamma Leone’s; and the rise and fall of French haute cuisine through restauranteur Henri Soulé’s Le Pavillon, using each restaurant to tell a wider story of race, class, immigration, and assimilation. He’ll even treat us to a scintillating history of the then-revolutionary Schrafft’s, a chain of convivial lunch spots that catered to women, and that bygone favorite, Howard Johnson’s, which pioneered on-the-road dining — only to be swept aside by McDonald’s.

At Yale, he has served as Director of Undergraduate Studies in History, Director of the Medieval Studies Program, Chair of the History Department, and Chair of the Program in the History of Science and Medicine. Pre-Webcast Talks: How to Enjoy Ballet, Opera & Classical Music How are we to make sense of these art forms? They come in so many styles, traditions, languages, and nationalities, it can be difficult to understand all their facets. These talks will help you watch and listen in a whole new way!

Ballets and operas have a story — but opera is often sung in a language foreign to the audience, ballet features no singing or speaking at all, and these works are staged in different times and settings than their original stories. In contrast, symphonies and chamber music have no story, so we must discern meanings for ourselves.

In these talks, focused on works featured in Willow Valley Webcasts, the stories of The Little Mermaid and Werther will be outlined in video clips and incidental tidbits about the composers and the works’ origins. We’ll also discuss how to listen to classical music, as well as what messages Schumann and Rachmaninov might have been trying to convey and what challenges musicians face in performing their works.

Great Photographers, Part 8: The Social Reformers Jacob Riis (1849–1914), Lewis Hine (1874–1940), and Sebastião Salgado (b. 1944) worked in different eras of photography, but each one saw gross mistreatment of his fellow human beings and refused to turn away. They used their cameras to document the plight of the poor and to raise public awareness of their working and living conditions.

Riis chronicled the wretched tenement housing and living conditions of immigrants; Hine was appalled by child labor in factories; and Salgado is known for his social documentary photography of workers in less developed nations. Together, their work has helped to inspire some of the greatest social reforms of the 20th century.

Let’s Roll Bike Demo & Guided Biking Tour Staff from Let’s Roll electric bike shop will be on campus providing demonstrations. Join Ryan and his team at the Cultural Center Upper Level parking area, where they will be able to size you up and give instruction on electric bike riding. Take a spin around the Lakes Campus and see if this might open up a new adventure for you!

Let’s Roll is also planning a guided electric bike tour on the Northwest River Trail, starting in Columbia and going north toward Marietta and Bainbridge. The tour will be 3–4 hours with stops along the route, including the White Cliffs of Conoy and lunch at River Trail Brewing. Electric bikes and helmets will be provided, and a guide will be present for the ride.

Let’s Roll sells, rents, and services all types of electric bikes. Rentals are available seven days a week, and they can transport the bikes and meet you at various trails around Lancaster County.

Wellness Education Classes

The Parsley Project How would you like to meet one of nature’s most beautiful creatures? You can start by placing a parsley plant on your patio or balcony. Parsley is a host plant for the eastern black swallowtail butterfly, a place to lay its eggs. Once an egg hatches, a caterpillar grows from no more than a speck through five stages — devouring the parsley along the way — and ultimately forms a chrysalis from which a gorgeous butterfly emerges.

Members of the WVC Environmental Interest Group will share photos and information about the black swallowtail so you will know how best to attract, observe, and hopefully care for a

Wildlife in the Water See what’s living under the water and what grows and lives around the water’s edge. You might know some of these animals in their adult stage, like the dragonfly, but do you know what they look like in the larva or nymph stage? Fitness Classes

Tap Classes All tap classes are progressive classes. It is important to attend the classes from the beginning to be able to learn the steps of the dances. Registration is required, and walk-ins are not encouraged.

Advanced Performing Tap Class Learn steps to combine in dance routines. This group prepares dances for various performances throughout the year. It’s great for the mind and body.

Sit And Tap Class New time!

S.A.T.-isfy your exercise needs as you learn the basic tap steps while seated in a chair. Those who use a walker or wheelchair may also participate. Tap shoes are recommended but not necessary. If you do not have tap shoes, a hard-soled shoe is recommended.

All exercises are done to music.

ExerStretch Start your day with this low-impact class designed to improve flexibility, strength, balance, and aerobic fitness. Relaxation and breathing techniques may be incorporated. This 45-minute class includes both standing and seated exercises. We especially welcome beginners.

This class uses movement in the form of static and dynamic poses to increase energy, improve flexibility, create balance, and strengthen the entire body.
