• If you would like to sit with someone, please include their reservation information on your form in the appropriate location. Each party will be billed separately unless instructed otherwise.

• Transportation will be provided for all shows. For evening shows, the shuttle will make continuous runs on each campus beginning at 5:40 p.m. (Manor Campus) and 5:45 p.m. (Lakes Campus). At the end of the program, buses will run until all Residents have returned to their drop-off location.

• For matinees, on-demand transportation will be available until after the show is over.

• Arrive early enough to be seated before the lights dim.

Piano Men: Generations More than a concert, Piano Men: Generations is a high-octane, emotionally charged musical journey led by a father-son duo and a world-class band. At its heart are Terry and Nick, father and son, bonded by blood and a deep love for the music of Billy Joel and Elton John. Their onstage chemistry is genuine, spontaneous, and moving — sometimes funny, always magnetic.

Terry, a seasoned musician with decades of orchestral and rock ’n’ roll experience, commands the stage with authority and heart. Nick brings fresh energy, charisma, and powerhouse vocals, effortlessly blending his style with his dad’s.

Elevating the show is the band, an electrifying ensemble who are stars in their own right.

Guitar solos soar, bass lines groove, and the rhythm section drives the performance with precision. At the core is drummer Mike Richau. With jaw-dropping stick flips, relentless energy, and razor-sharp timing, he turns every show into a spectacle. One moment he’s laying down a subtle groove, the next he’s launching into a thunderous solo — sticks flying, crowd roaring.

GQ GQ (Gentlemen’s Quartet) creates a modern, elegant take on some of the most famous music ever written, fusing multiple genres in a symphony of sophistication, virtuosity, and humor.

Offering audiences a new, often deeper, way of listening to music, the group reinvigorates timeless songs through the use of clever arrangements. For instance, their rendition of John Legend’s All of Me blends a Chopin nocturne, Elgar’s Cello Concerto, Ed Sheeran’s Perfect, and Michael Nyman’s The Piano. Their repertoire also includes selections as varied as Adagio, Don’t Stop Believing, Rhapsody Overload, and much more!

Comprised of Peter Sachon (cello and mandocello), Matt Scharfglass (electric guitar and bass), Ben Saporito (percussion), and music director and arranger David Shenton (piano and violin), with special appearances by female vocalist Erin Shields, GQ combines amazing talent, beautiful songs, and tremendous personality in each of their concerts.

Backed by a four-piece band, he breathes new life into the classic music of the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s with energy, style, and soul, featuring iconic songs like California Dreamin’, Stand By Me, Wouldn’t It Be Nice, and many more! Gábor Takács-Nagy Conducts Haydn, Grieg & Brahms — With Alexandra Dovgan For the 2024 Verbier Festival, maestro Gábor Takács-Nagy leads the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra in a magnificent program featuring rising piano star Alexandra Dovgan.

After Haydn’s Symphony No. 1, a brief but luminous classical-era gem, Dovgan takes the stage to perform the solo role in Grieg’s beloved Piano Concerto in A minor, which opens with one of the most famous motifs in the piano repertoire. To cap off the evening, the orchestra moves on to Brahms’s majestic Symphony No. 1 in C minor, a masterpiece that took decades to compose but no time at all to find enduring success.

Opera: Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail In Mozart’s comic opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio), the ship of Spanish nobleman Belmonte Lostados is attacked, and his fiancée, Konstanze, is taken prisoner along with her maid and Belmonte’s servant, Pedrillo. All three are then sold as slaves to the Turkish Pasha Selim. As Belmonte sets out to rescue them, clever disguises, comic confusion, and daring plans unfold, but the Pasha discovers his plot — and that Belmonte is the son of his archenemy, who had once driven him from his North African homeland.

How will the Pasha exact his revenge?

Mozart received an imperial commission to write The Abduction in 1781 because the Russian Grand Duke Paul Petrovich was set to visit. Beneath its exotic setting, the opera criticizes the attitudes and behavioral patterns of absolutist Europe. One wonders if the emperor noticed in which direction the opera was moving.

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons Reimagined for the Ballet Stage by Mourad Merzouki & the Compagnie Käfig In choreographer Mourad Merzouki’s reinvention of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, classical music merges with hip-hop, break dancing, acrobatics, and cutting-edge stagecraft. Acclaimed violinist and conductor Julien Chauvin stars alongside dancers from the Compagnie Käfig and musicians from Le Concert de la Loge in this performance, staged at La Seine Musicale just outside Paris. Their strikingly kinetic, emotive performance offers a groundbreaking interpretation of this Baroque masterpiece, where the power and expressive potential of instrumental music come to life through visual storytelling and dynamic choreography.

Exhibition On Screen: Raphael Revealed Raphael was more than just a painter — he was one of the most extraordinary artists of the Renaissance.

To mark the 500th anniversary of his death, a 2020 exhibition in Rome brought together more than 200 of his masterpieces, showcasing the breadth of his skill, creativity, and ingenuity. This film covers his life in Rome, the ancient city that proved such a powerful influence, and includes rare footage of Nero’s Golden House, which Raphael himself visited. Celebrating the life and work of this often misunderstood artist, award-winning director Phil Grabsky provides a fresh look at this giant of the Renaissance and shows why he is considered one of the all-time greats.

Exhibition On Screen: Turner & Constable Accompanying Tate Britain’s groundbreaking exhibition Turner & Constable, this unmissable documentary brings two of Britain’s greatest painters, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable, into brilliant focus. Both artists used landscape painting to reflect the changing world around them — Constable representing the very best of old-school realism and pastoral nostalgia with his idealized depictions of beloved places from home; Turner showing an exciting new way of depicting emotion with dreamlike impressions of blazing sunsets and sublime scenes from his travels.

In honor of the 250th anniversary of their births, this film explores the artists’ intertwined lives and legacies through intimate views of their sketchbooks and personal items, as well as insights from leading experts.

Esa-Pekka Salonen Conducts Ravel, Salonen & Sibelius — With Senja Rummukainen Finnish conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen leads the Cleveland Orchestra in this performance rich with color, emotion, and Nordic spirit. Included are his own Cello Concerto, performed by fellow Finn Senja Rummukainen, and Jean Sibelius’s rich and rewarding Symphony No. 5, an island of Romanticism written amid the experimental postwar waters of 1919. Also on the program is a favorite work whose orchestral version was completed in that same year: Maurice Ravel’s haunting Le Tombeau de Couperin, an elegy to his friends lost in the Great War, which, despite its genesis, leaves us in an atmosphere of contemplative optimism.

Love Letters Enjoy a special Valentine’s Day presentation of Love Letters by award-winning playwright A.R. Gurney, featuring Willow Valley Residents Pat Lemay and Dick Narvett. Before the show, heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served. The menu can be found online when you register.

Described as “a disarmingly funny and unforgettably emotional portrait about the powerful connection of love” by Playbill, the story begins with a birthday party and progresses through summer camp, college, and marriages as two childhood friends confide their hopes, dreams, triumphs, and defeats through 50 years of correspondence. Sitting side by side, the actors read letters as their "love affair" gradually unfolds from what is written to what is left unsaid.

This celebrated staged reading is a beautiful yet bittersweet account of the deep closeness between two lifelong friends.

This production contains adult language.

Sweetheart Dance with By Request An evening to celebrate with that special someone.

Camp Willow A summer day camp for your grandchildren.

Invite your grandchildren ages 7–11 (by the first day of camp) for a week of unforgettable fun. Willow Valley Team Members serve as camp counselors during this energizing week packed full of fun for everyone. The memories made during this week are sure to last a lifetime.

The cost of the camp is $250/child, which includes daily activities, a trip, lunches and snacks for the kids, and a few special events for grandparents at a minimal cost to you. By registering online, you are committing your grandchild(ren) to attend camp. You will receive the necessary paperwork through in-house mail within 14 days of registering. Completed paperwork must be returned by April 6 in order to attend camp.

ART GALLERY

Art Gallery Stolen Views of Lancaster Stolen Views of Lancaster is an exhibition of paintings by five local artists — Jay Dombach, Phoebe Gilman, Joanne McIlvaine, Elizabeth Patton, and Sean Poole — that depict multiple locations in Lancaster County.

The artists meet as a plein air group at various locales around the county and critique one another’s work at the end of each session. Much of the exhibition’s work is derived from these plein air sessions, but some has been completed in studio on a larger scale. The paintings show off the natural beauty of the county mixed with more urban landscapes. Each of the artists paints in a very distinct and personal style using oil paint, and the title, Stolen Views of Lancaster, refers to the private decision each makes when landing on their chosen composition. They never ask permission.

Whether it is on a farm, passing by a construction site, or around water. The subject can also be a portrait or a still life.

It just needs to be something or somewhere that catches my attention and energizes me.”

Phoebe Gilman “The loneliness of the current American landscape motivates my work. I am drawn to off-center compositions. When choosing locations to paint, I look for ways the sun and technology move through and across the buildings. By excluding words and numbers on signs, my goal is that these images can evoke memories of any number of locations.”

Joanne McIlvaine “I’ve been oil painting outdoors for over 13 years. Growing up on a farm in Lancaster County, I have always found inspiration in the landscape. My paintings have a sense of softness and serenity. I simplify nature’s complexities to capture a mood that the location inspires. My goal is to instill a sense of wonder and offer a shift in perspective.”

Elizabeth Patton “A summer course in plein air painting with Mike Witmer in 2009 was a turning point in my development as an artist. That course served as a springboard to forming a plein air group so I can continue to interpret the constantly changing landscape I see around me on canvas and board.”

Sean Poole “When we moved here to South Central Pennsylvania 20-some years ago, the nature and old architecture made me want to stay. We now live near the Susquehanna River, and I spend as much time as I can outdoors painting from life. With my paintings, I’m aiming to capture the energy and beauty that we are all part of as we share and care for the planet.”

Stone Stafford, North Resident From the artist: As an artist, I am committed to creating bold and impactful works. My art unfolds as I paint without a definitive endpoint. Each piece reveals a path as I work. The interplay of color and depth exploration forms the foundation of my compositions. I strive to build a connection that encompasses the artist, the artwork, and the audience.

My work unites color, form, and perception. I don’t just create art; I create a visual dialogue that I encourage viewers to engage in. This dialogue, inspired by my art, is a two-way street, fostering connectivity and understanding, which are essential goals of my creative process.

Melissa Zane From the artist: Design in nature is the foundation of my artistic inspiration. I’m drawn to the vibrant colors of a flower, the contrast of textures revealed in black and white, the way sunlight dances on the edge of a petal, and the unexpected shadows cast by a stamen’s curve. The twisting of branches, the weathered burls of an old tree trunk, the curl of a single leaf — all these natural elements contain a kind of quiet magic that I aim to capture. My work is not purely realistic; it’s a synthesis of observation and imagination, where reality meets artistic license.

Working primarily in large-scale acrylic on canvas, I create organic interpretations of nature’s beauty. My paintings invite the viewer to look beyond the obvious and explore the design elements — pattern, texture, light, and form — that exist within the natural world. Earth tones, bursts of color against dark backgrounds, and the use of metallic paints are hallmarks of my work, highlighting the subtleties of light and movement as seen from different perspectives.

Gelli JOY Printmaking Workshops Experience the JOY of pulling one-of-a-kind monoprints without a press. The soft surface of a gelatin plate allows artists to create unique layered prints using acrylic paints and found textures. This process encourages play, discovery, and even happy accidents, as no two prints are ever the same.

3D Painting Collage Create a 3D painting by using modeling paste and an assortment of tools (e.g., textured scrapers, plastic bottles, spatulas, and pallet knives). You can follow a pattern/ stencil or use your imagination to create an actual subject or go completely abstract. You’ll build up, draw with, play with, and move the modeling paste around on either one 17" x 25" or two 12" x 12" wooden canvases. Then, you’ll learn painting techniques to show all the beautiful textures and accentuate the subject you made with the modeling paste.

Martha Washington: Her Life & Legacy Martha Washington facilitated her husband’s rise to power, created the job of the First Lady, and set the tone for the political gatherings she hosted for local and international officials. After her death, she became an icon who represented the ideal woman for many Americans: a woman who hosted her husband’s political gatherings but did not demand equal rights.

She and her portrait were so popular that she became the first, and only, woman who has ever appeared on US paper currency. Together, we will learn how Martha Washington and her legacy shaped the nation.

The Great Migration: Recreating America The mass movement of mostly rural Black Southerners to urban cores across the country between 1916 and 1970 was one of the most important moments in American history. As millions confronted the challenges of a new labor market, housing segregation, and Northern racism, African American communities redefined themselves as representative of Southern sensibilities and Northern realities. The Great Migration radically transformed urban real estate, schools, political alliances, and voting patterns, as well as music, art, and literature. It also primed the nation for the radical changes of the civil rights movement and continues to inform how we understand regional culture and race.

The Personal Presidency: Are We Too Close to the White House?

Beginning with Theodore Roosevelt in the early 20th century, and expanding with Woodrow Wilson and FDR, the presidency has grown increasingly “personal.” With the advent of modern travel and media technology, and as government services have expanded, our presidents have moved closer to the American electorate than the founders ever anticipated or desired. But are they now too close?

Do we expect too much from them, especially during times of crisis? We may think that access to the presidency is a positive element of American democracy, but has it given our chief executives more incentive to become demagogues?

Presented by: Marcia Chatelain Georgetown University Marcia Chatelain is Associate Professor of History and African American Studies at Georgetown University. Pre-Webcast Talks: How to Enjoy Ballet, Opera & Classical Music How are we to make sense of these art forms? They come in so many styles, traditions, languages, and nationalities, it can be difficult to understand all their facets. These talks will help you watch and listen in a whole new way.

Ballets and operas have a story — but opera is often sung in a language foreign to the audience, ballet features no singing or speaking at all, and these works are staged in different times and settings than their original stories. A cursory understanding of the stories usually overcomes these issues.

In these talks, focused on works featured in Willow Valley Webcasts, the stories of Four Seasons and Die Entführung aus dem Serail will be outlined in video clips and incidental tidbits about the composers and the works’ origins. An American Institution: American Bandstand At 4548 Market Street in Philadelphia, a historical marker commemorates a TV show that had a major impact on the music, dance, and lifestyle of American teenagers: American Bandstand. The program was broadcast nationwide from 1957 to 1964, featuring more than 750 acts, including The Beach Boys, Michael Jackson, Neil Diamond, Aretha Franklin, Sonny and Cher, Andy Williams, Barry Manilow, and many more. From Pentecost to Yesterday: Key Features of Christianity

The Hindu Path: Death & Rebirth, An Endless Cycle to Be Escaped

Christianity has been described as “a very messy global movement,” developing over 2,000 years into something like a large extended family. Keeping its history in mind, this presentation will address significant structures and dynamics of Christian life.

We’ll discuss foundational teachings about God and salvation, models of Christian life, and practices that sustain and shape faith.

This presentation will focus on the Upanishads, foundational texts in the formation of Hindu views of reality. We’ll examine the nature of karma, its relationship to desire, and how it can trap us in the realm of continuing rebirth and suffering, called samsara. We’ll also discuss the path out of samsara, which consists of realizing the distinction between the ego and the true self, or Atman.

Presenter Anne T. Thayer is Professor Emerita of Theology and Church History at Lancaster Theological Seminary, where she taught for 25 years and directed the Doctor of Ministry program. She received her PhD in religion from Harvard and is especially interested in the history of preaching and pastoral care.

Presenter Randall C. Zachman is Professor Emeritus of Reformation Studies at the University of Notre Dame and Theologian in Residence at St. James Episcopal Church in Lancaster. He’s done extensive work in comparative religion and has taught courses on Buddhist, Hindu, and Muslim traditions.

The Islamic Faith: Core Beliefs & Purpose of Life Dr. Shahid Babar will discuss the reasons behind the belief in the fundamental articles of Islam: why one should believe in God, the prophetic message, and life in the Hereafter. He’ll also provide Islamic perspectives on the purpose of life: where we came from, why we are here, and where we are heading.

In addition to being an administrator, Dr. Babar practices clinical medicine and teaches medical residents and students. With a master’s in Islamic studies from American Open University, he also provides Islamic and Quranic education at the Islamic Community Center of Lancaster and other Islamic centers in Pennsylvania.

Judaism: 4,000 Years, One Hour, No Problem!

Hillel, one of Judaism’s great sages, was challenged to teach the entire Torah while standing on one foot. He responded, “That which is hateful to you, do not do to another. All the rest is commentary. Go and learn it.” In this presentation, Rabbi Jack Paskoff will attempt to provide 4,000 years of Judaistic history and theology while standing on one foot (not literally, but in a single session!).

A native New Yorker, Rabbi Paskoff is in his 33rd year as the rabbi of Lancaster’s Congregation Shaarai Shomayim. He often addresses social justice issues in his congregation and has participated in projects related to homelessness, poverty, reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights, and immigrant resettlement.

Buddhism in Seven Words (Or More) What is Buddhism? Is it a religion or a philosophy? What is the role of dogma in Buddhism? Why do many Buddhists practice meditation? Is it a form of prayer?

Do you need to be a Buddhist to practice Buddhism? These are just some of the questions that presenter Edward Sangetsu Sullivan will explore.

Sullivan is a sensei (teacher) in the White Plum lineage of Zen and a Soto Zen priest. He serves as the Spiritual Director of the Red Rose Sangha in Lancaster and is Professor Emeritus of Business Administration and Economics at Lebanon Valley College, where he founded a program that teaches contemplative practices to students, faculty, and staff.

The First American School of Landscape Artists The Hudson River School is the earliest “officially recognized” group of American artists. Active between 1825 and 1870, they loved the Catskill Mountains of New York, and the common thread that wove through their work was landscape painting.

Along with the background of the Hudson River School and the earliest American structure to exclusively house only working artists, this series will discuss noteworthy Hudson River Valley painters Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, and Albert Bierstadt.

Their lives shimmer with interesting stories, and their paintings dazzle and dance across canvases and wooden surfaces. This is an enlightening series not to be missed.

Distant View of Niagara Falls

The autumn of 1825 forever changed the course of American art. That is when 24-year-old Thomas Cole boarded a riverboat to steam north up the Hudson River to Catskill Landing. He made many sketches of the eastern Catskill Mountains, from which he painted his first three landscapes of the Hudson River Valley after returning to New York City.

Cole eventually settled in the town of Catskill, and from there until the end of his brief life, he painted the glorious valley. His paintings are legacies to the fledgling nation of the United States, with all its dreams and realities, as well as a celebration of the nation’s natural landscapes. This lecture includes information on the Hudson River School and a look into Cole's lifestyle, home, and beautiful works of art.

The Premier Hudson River School Artist: Frederic Church (1836–1900) Raised in Hartford, Connecticut, 18-year-old Frederic Church’s first official painting teacher was Thomas Cole, whom he studied with for two years. Although his first major painting under the tutorage of Cole was New England Scenery, Church was known as the “travelingartist” and painted in Europe and South America as well as North America. His most famous composition, Horseshoe Falls, was a result of his travels to Niagara Falls. He strongly supported the preservation of the area and joined Free Niagara, a movement that led to the establishment of America’s first state park.

Along with traveling and painting, Church built a regal estate called Olana on top of a mountain across from the town of Catskill. This program highlights his personal life, Olana, and many of his amazing works of art. By 1860, the public considered Church to be America’s most renowned artist. The Rocky Mountain King: Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902)

The Rocky Mountains, Lander’s Peak

The greatest artist of our nation’s northwestern landscapes is German-born Albert Bierstadt, whose family immigrated to America when he was 1. A secondgeneration Hudson River School artist, he painted the shorelines and Catskill and White mountain areas of New England before searching for new horizons. In 1859, he joined a surveying group hired to plot a pathway through Wyoming and Idaho, and once Bierstadt beheld the mighty Rocky Mountains, he was hooked. He could not stop photographing, drawing, and paint-sketching the majestic scenery.

Bierstadt carried his findings back to his New York City studio and created the grandest statements of the American West that have ever been seen. He became the foremost painter of its untamed beauty, and his works encouraged efforts toward its protection and preservation, including Abraham Lincoln’s authorization of the country’s earliest land trust in 1864.

From 1896 to the present, the Olympic Games’ glory has been dimmed by protests, boycotts, and controversies on a range of occasions. The Games were cancelled during both World Wars. Politically related boycotts occurred in 1956, ’80, and ’84. Track controversies marred the 1900 and 1924 Games, and doping scandals have tarnished the competition several times, beginning with Soviet-era Russian teams’ use of performanceenhancing steroids. Some Sports Origins This presentation considers a variety of sports, ones not considered as mainstream as, say, baseball or basketball. One such sport is water polo, a longstanding Olympic Games event. Some have a relatively long history, like badminton and croquet.

More recently, there is pickleball. Others are so unusual, they stretch the definition of “sport.” These rather bizarre events are perhaps better classified as “competitions,” including cheese rolling, extreme ironing, gurning, and buzkashi, an ancient game played on horseback. A Man unto Himself: Constantin Brancusi Abused by his father and half brothers, Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi (1876–1957) ran away from home when he was 9. His wanderings eventually took him to Paris in 1903, where he became one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century. His philosophy of creating the inward essences of his subjects, mainly portraits and animals, led him toward imaginative images that still speak to today’s public of the souls of his works.

Although Brancusi moved in the Parisienne artistic circles of his day, he never mimicked others, and everything about him was original. His disastrous childhood led him to rely completely on himself — he lived alone and created most of what surrounded him, including his clothing and furnishings.

Truly a fabulous sculptor, Brancusi was a fascinating personality and a major contributor to the world of threedimensional imagery.

American Civil War History Celebrating 250 Years of America!

There is no doubt that a crucial portion of our nation’s history is the American Civil War, resulting in 384 battles and the loss of approximately 620,000 men, or 2% of the population. In preparation of the 250th anniversary of the United States, this class is an excellent way to refresh your memory on the conflict. We’ll discuss the causes of the war, the war itself, and finally, Reconstruction. A major focus of this series will be the battles of Fort Sumter, First Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the Appomattox Court House.

Also included is a second feature, The Volcanoes of Iceland. In 2023, a trip to the geothermal Blue Lagoon ended with the facility closing due to an increased frequency of earthquakes — five volcanic eruptions occurred nearby over the next six months. This is a look at the five eruptions plus a review of the most famous volcanoes in Iceland, all set to the folk music of the country.

Learn the Gmail basics, including how to use the Send, Schedule, Delay, and Undo features; add a document, pictures, voice, or video to an email; create a tagline and multiple signatures; subscribe, block, delete, and archive emails; create, manage, and use labels; use powerful search functions; add a contact from an email to the address book; set up a vacation response; and create an alias for multiple contacts so you don’t have to type each address.

Learn how to use Google’s AI to sort emails into headings like Personal, Important, Promotions, Social, and Forums, which makes navigation easier and saves time. We’ll also discuss how to use advanced features like custom signatures, the vacation setting, an alias email address, voice typing, mail forwarding, labels (folders) and filters, and more. If time permits, we’ll also talk about how you can migrate to Gmail from AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, or other providers.

Great Photographers, Part 10: The Modern Documentary

Introduction to Google Photos

True documentary photography began in the late 19th century, used primarily to bring the plight of the poor to public attention. With the passing decades, its focus has expanded exponentially. This program will focus on the work of three photographers whose work is proof of today’s wide-ranging documentary subject matter today.

Android cell phones include the Google Photos app that automatically stores your new phone photos in the Cloud, thus making them available on all your devices. It is likely you have digital photos taken with other cameras, scanned from prints, or that have been received in emails or texts. Learn how to add these to Google Photos and use the app’s features to organize your photos by time and date. The process of creating albums to further organize your pictures will be demonstrated, as well as how to share these albums with friends and family.

Elliott Erwitt (1928–2023) began his career in the early 1950s with a study of Pittsburgh and its inhabitants before going on to capture people around the world. Mary Ellen Mark (1940–2015) specialized in photographing people and groups outside of mainstream society, those who were both interesting and often troubled. The work of Steve McCurry (b. 1950) concentrates on the toll that war takes on human lives and the areas they inhabit; the subject of one of his earliest photographs is known worldwide as the green-eyed Afghan Girl.

Buddy Up: Water & Walking Challenge Designed for all fitness levels! The goal of our challenge is to increase your step count and water intake for six weeks. Combining walking and proper hydration: • Boosts circulation and cellular function • Supports natural detox processes, like sweating • Improves cognitive function and sleep quality • Relieves stress and helps us to have a happy mood For those 60 and younger, the recommended number of daily steps is 8,500; for those over 60, it’s 6,500. Whether you break up walking into chunks or do it all at once, 20 minutes correlates to about 2,000 steps, a great start toward increasing your physical activity to rev up your metabolism. The recommended daily water intake for women is about 8 cups, and for men, it’s 10.

Shenks Ferry is a world-renowned wildflower preserve. Spring ephemerals like Virginia bluebells, Dutchman’s-breeches, and trilliums should be in full bloom for us to enjoy on this 2-mile hike, guided by a naturalist from the Lancaster Conservancy who will point out the wildflowers and discuss their ecology. The trail is easy with a gravel and dirt surface and slight incline. Hikers should dress for the weather, wear comfortable shoes, and bring drinking water.

AARP Safe Driving

The ankle and foot are anatomically complex areas with a broad spectrum of intra- and extra-articular pathologies. Dr. Younes will discuss multiple foot and ankle problems that can affect daily living — including plantar fasciitis, bunions, neuromas, and much more — as well as treatment options to consider so you can gain relief from pain.

This is the largest driving refresher course for those 50 and older, helping millions of drivers remain safe on today’s roads. This eight-hour course (divided into two sessions) gives you practical techniques to compensate for the changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time that are part of the normal aging process. After taking this course, you may also be eligible for an auto insurance discount (check with your insurance carrier for details).

Snoring & Sleep Apnea: Annoyances or Deadly Health Hazards?

For sufferers of obstructive sleep apnea and disruptive snoring, oral appliance therapy is a proven noninvasive, nonsurgical treatment that is equally effective and far better tolerated than traditional CPAP machines. Patients have found the appliances easy to use and clean, much less bothersome, and significantly more comfortable.

Dr. Patterson is a Lancaster native who earned his BA from the University of Pittsburgh and his DMD from Temple University’s School of Dentistry. He has joined the team at White Willow Family Dental, located on the Willow Valley Lakes Campus, and looks forward to meeting you and sharing more about options for treating snoring and sleep apnea.

Wildlife on Lancaster Conservancy Preserves Are there coyotes in Lancaster County? How abundant are red fox? What are the rarest and most common birds? What kinds of bats live around Lancaster? These and other questions are being researched on Lancaster Conservancy preserves by Dr. Dan Ardia from Franklin & Marshall College. This presentation will cover the natural history of wildlife found on our preserves, the preliminary findings of Dr. Ardia’s research, and the land protection programs the conservancy is implementing to restore and protect the region’s wildlife and bird populations, ensuring their presence for future generations.

The Brain & Alzheimer’s Disease The anticipation of the Marlin and Doris Thomas Memory Center has sparked increased awareness of and interest in brain health. In response, Resident Todd McIntyre will be offering a two-part class to help Residents become more familiar with the functions of the brain and the pathologies of common types of dementia. The classes will review the basic functions of the human brain and the pathologies of dementia (Alzheimer’s, frontotemporal, Lewy body, and vascular), as well as current and future treatments, both symptomatic and disease modifying.

The classes will be held on back-to-back days in the Cultural Center Conference Room. To facilitate discussion and the ability to ask follow-up questions, attendance for each is limited.

Todd received his doctorate in neuroscience from the University of Colorado Boulder, was a Staff Fellow in neuropharmacology at the US National Institutes of Health, and worked in the biopharmaceutical industry, where his research focused on psychiatric and neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s.

We’ll explore the three types of fencing weapons — foil, épée, and sabre — and their unique rules and target areas. You’ll learn the essentials, from the on-guard stance to movements like the advance, retreat, lunge, and the fundamental attacks and parries. We’ll also uncover how fencing differs from theatrical sword fighting and why it is often called physical chess.

Spring Ephemeral Wildflowers

In this interactive session, you’ll get hands-on experience with footwork drills and learn how to hold a foil, extend your arm to strike a target, parry to block attacks, and counterattack with precision.

Whether you’re looking for a fun challenge or a deeper appreciation for this elegant sport, you’re in for an engaging and informative experience!

Our forests’ floors come alive with bursts of color in early spring, before the forest canopy leafs out.

These are spring ephemeral wildflowers, and they fill our world with beauty and seem to be our reward for enduring the last dreary days of winter. But there is so much more to these plants than beauty — they are critically important ecologically. Their emergence and bloom is part of a strategy to capitalize on sunlight while it’s available, perfectly timed with the arrival of early spring pollinators. This presentation will share the beauty of these flowers and discuss their identification and ecology.

Fitness Classes

Register using Event Registration.

Tap Classes All tap classes are progressive classes. It is important to attend the classes from the beginning to be able to learn the steps of the dances. Registration is required, and walk-ins are not encouraged.

Advanced Performing Tap Class Learn steps to combine in dance routines. This group prepares dances for various performances throughout the year. It’s great for the mind and body.

Sit And Tap Class S.A.T.-isfy your exercise needs as you learn the basic tap steps while seated in a chair. Those who use a walker or wheelchair may also participate. Tap shoes are recommended but not necessary. If you do not have tap shoes, a hard-soled shoe is recommended.

All exercises are done to music.

Zumba Zumba is an interval-style dance fitness party that combines low-intensity and high-intensity moves. You’ll burn lots of calories as you move to the rhythm with Latin-inspired dance moves.

Zumba isn’t just great for cardiovascular health; you’ll also tone your muscles and improve balance and flexibility. Healthy intermediate exercisers are welcome.

Yoga This class uses movement in the form of static and dynamic poses to increase energy, improve flexibility, and strengthen and create balance throughout the entire body. Regular yoga practice increases body awareness, relaxes the mind, and improves stamina.

Poses are performed lying, kneeling, sitting, and standing. Previous yoga experience is not required.

Fitness Fusion Keep your workout fun and interesting with this class that fuses two exercise formats into one. Move through aerobic and strength-training exercises to achieve maximum fitness results. Healthy beginners and intermediate-level exercisers are encouraged to participate.

Beginner Mat Pilates This basic class teaches exercises to strengthen abdominal and back muscles and improve pelvic stability. Pilates exercises are mindful movements, taught with precision and control, to strengthen ligaments and joints, lengthen muscles, and improve posture and balance.

Chair Yoga Gentle movement with the breath. This 45-minute session aims to calm the mind and will increase strength and range of motion. Based on Vinyasa Yoga, where breath is in service to movement, we will move into poses similar to what has been practiced for many generations to help maintain good health and well-being. Please note: The second Wednesday of each month, class will be held in the Cultural Center Ballroom.

Mat Pilates

Use free weights, bands, core balls, and/or body bars to strengthen your muscles. Focusing on the upper body, lower body, and muscles of the core, this class will challenge your muscular strength and endurance.

Incorporating the 34 mat exercises created

by Joseph H. Pilates, this flowing Pilates class emphasizes proper breath control and form to improve muscle imbalances and limited flexibility.

Core Power

The smooth, graceful movements of Tai Chi are achieved through relaxation and mindfulness. This class includes a set of gentle Qigong movements for warm-up, and you will learn a Tai Chi “form” consisting of choreographed movements. Benefits include better balance, an improved immune system, and a calmer state of mind.

This class focuses on improving the strength and flexibility of your core. Core muscles include the abdominals, lower back, glutes, and hips. Exercises will be performed lying, kneeling, and standing.

This class is appropriate for healthy beginners and intermediate-level exercisers.
