The West Chester Swing Kings

The West Chester Swing Kings were established in 1987 as a dance band playing swing tunes from the classic big band era. Over the years, they’ve added to their repertoire, and today, this 19-piece group plays a large selection of more recent songs specifically arranged for swing bands.

In addition to popular swing music from the 1940s such as Woodchopper’s Ball, Satin Doll, Begin the Beguine, and the immortal Moonlight Serenade, the band plays newer pieces, including Brian Setzer’s Rock This Town, Doc Severinsen’s In the Mood, Natalie Cole’s Orange Colored Sky and L-O-V-E, Jim Croce’s Bad, Bad Leroy Brown, Nora Jones’s Don’t Know Why, and Chicago as performed by Buddy Rich and I Can’t Stop Loving You as performed by Count Basie. And we can’t forget the rock and roll era, with favorites such as Bandstand Boogie, Rock Around the Clock, Kansas City, and others. You will also hear a number of patriotic tunes in this swinging show.

Three on a String

Three on a String — Jerry Ryan, Bobby Horton, Brad Ryan, and Andy Meginniss — have been having a good time right along with their audiences all over the country since 1971. Their show has evolved into a well-timed, musically interesting, and funny presentation mixing bluegrass, country, old-time favorites, and comedy.

In 1970, Jerry Ryan and Bobby Horton performed as a duet for one show at Horse Pens 40 near Steele, Alabama. George Pruitt, a big band music veteran, suggested they add a bass, and a few months later, Three on a String was born. Club work evolved into work with theaters and festivals, concert series, and symphony orchestras, including a nine-city tour with the Alabama Symphony. Three on a String has also had the opportunity to open for Red Skelton, Barbara Mandrell, George Lindsey, and Ray Stevens.

Whether engaging in three-part harmonies or performing on a variety of instruments, Three on a String display excellent musicianship, versatility, and a genuine zest for performing. They’re four entertaining guys who have learned their craft and enjoy sharing their music and humor with audiences and anyone else who will listen.

John McCutcheon

Often described as folk music’s Renaissance man, John McCutcheon is a six-time Grammy nominee, author of three books, and a multi-instrumentalist who has released 43 albums since 1975. He is considered a master of a dozen traditional instruments, including the hammered dulcimer, and is widely regarded as a staple of traditional American folk music since the 1970s.

McCutcheon’s early career focused on Appalachian music before he turned to children’s music and social activism in the 1980s, writing songs to bring about social change in the tradition of Pete Seeger. Along the way, he earned legions of fans and respect from his peers for his prowess as a songwriter and musician.

McCutcheon feels most at home in live performance, which has brought his music into the lives and homes of one of the broadest audiences any folk musician has ever enjoyed. People of every generation and background feel at home in a concert hall when he takes the stage with what critics describe as “little feats of magic,” “breathtaking in their ease and grace,” and “like a conversation with an illuminating old friend.”

See page 36 for details on John McCutcheon’s writing workshop.

Game Show: Survey Says & Know It All

We are all familiar with the popular game shows Family Feud and Jeopardy!, and you may love playing along at home. The Game Show Source, the nation’s leading game show production company, will bring their versions of these shows to our theater for an unforgettable afternoon of fun, laughs, prizes, and more.

Survey Says (similar to Family Feud) is played with two teams competing against each other, trying to give the most popular answer to survey questions that have been answered by 100 people. Teams score points based on how many people came up with the same answer.

Know It All (similar to Jeopardy!) is played with groups of people who race to be the first to buzz in with the answer after hearing a question. If no one knows the answer, it will be given to contestants in the form of a multiple-choice question, and the first to buzz in wins.

The stage will be set, and both games will have all the bells and whistles of a real TV game show, including cool sound effects, electronic scorekeeping, and a professional game show host to further enhance the fun. Teams will be formed closer to the event, so watch the Weekly Insider if you would like to be a contestant. For those who prefer to be a member of the audience, you will have the chance to win small prizes during interactive trivia challenges played during the games.

If all of this is not enough, there will be an ice cream social in between the two games where you can enjoy some delicious ice cream from Maplehofe Dairy.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin Conducts Smetana & Dvořák — With Lisa Batiashvili

See one of the most popular and talented maestros of today, the impeccable Yannick Nézet-Séguin, leading the prestigious Berliner Philharmoniker under the stars in this 2016 edition of their storied Waldbühne concert! Joined by renowned virtuoso violinist Lisa Batiashvili, this program is dedicated to some of the greatest Czech music ever written.

When we talk about Czech greats, Smetana and Dvořák usually come to mind first — with good reason. Smetana’s hauntingly beautiful Vltava (The Moldau) opens the evening, indelibly evoking the flowing waters of the most famous Czech river. From Dvořák, we’re treated to Batiashvili’s electrifying rendition of his Violin Concerto in A Minor, followed by his Sixth Symphony and an irresistible Slavonic Dance. Capping off the festivities is the traditional, exhilarating Berliner Luft (Berlin Air).

This beautifully illustrated and richly detailed film uses it as a launchpad to travel to Tokyo, one of the most vibrant and interesting cities on the planet, and explore the art and artists of the city more fully.

Mozart’s Don Giovanni

In 1787, the curtain rose upon Mozart’s Don Giovanni, now regarded as one of the world’s greatest operatic masterpieces. Over two centuries later, the magic lives on in the Berlin State Opera’s spectacular adaptation under the musical direction of Thomas Guggeis! Celebrated baritone Michael Volle and renowned sopranos Elsa Dreisig and Slávka Zámečníková breathe exhilarating life into the vision of stage director Vincent Huguet.

The opera revolves around the escapades of libertine seducer Don Giovanni, who attempts to court three women. Passion clashes with melodrama as the protagonist blazes the path to his own demise by killing one of their fathers in a duel, and he is forced to endure the consequences and perishes in the flames of hell.

Don Giovanni is an outrageous blend of supernatural and comic, burlesque and tragedy, representing the best of classical opera — with Tchaikovsky remarking that he was “in the presence of divinity” upon seeing the original manuscript. Sung in German with English subtitles.

Sir Simon Rattle Conducts Chabrier, Saint-Saëns, Massenet, Ravel & Poulenc — With Anne-Sophie Mutter

Every year, the extraordinary Berliner Philharmoniker puts on a winter gala like only they can, inviting some of the most coveted names in the business to help them ring in the New Year at the Berliner Philharmonie. For the 2015 edition, the charismatic Sir Simon Rattle took the helm, joined by virtuoso violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter!

The program gives pride of place to the beloved French repertoire of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, featuring Saint-Saëns’s irresistible Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Ravel’s Tzigane, and Poulenc’s suite for the ballet Les Biches, as well as works by Chabrier and Massenet, all finished off with a devilish encore.

Exhibition On Screen: Mary Cassatt — Painting the Modern Woman

Mary Cassatt made a career painting the lives of the women around her. Her radical images showed them as intellectual, feminine, and real — a major shift in the way women appeared in art. This film introduces us to Cassatt, whose own career was as full of contradiction as the women she depicted. She printed, sketched, and painted dozens of images of mothers and children, yet she never married or had children herself. She was a classically trained artist, but chose to join a group of Parisian radicals, the Impressionists, who transformed the language of art.

The world’s most eminent Cassatt curators and scholars help tell this riveting tale of great social and cultural change, when women were fighting for their rights and the language of art was completely rewritten.

Program Honoring Memorial Day

Decoration Day was established after the Civil War to honor those who had died in American wars. The holiday gradually became more commonly known as Memorial Day after World War II and was declared the official name by federal law in 1967.

Our Memorial Day program this year will highlight one of our national cemeteries here in Pennsylvania administered by the US Department of Veterans Affairs: Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Randy Plummer, administrator of the cemetery, will share moving stories related to the place. He conducts guided tours there that our vets have found most interesting.

We will also review the history of the POW/MIA flag and have a POW/MIA table on display. In addition, there will be several WWII model plane replicas provided by Residents of Willow Valley.

The program will conclude with the story of how a Dutch city remembers those Americans who sacrificed their lives to free its country. It will cause us to pause when we see how some who once lived under oppression remain grateful for their freedoms so many years later.

Come join us for a program that will leave you with a sense of pride and patriotism.

Elena Shackleton, A Life of Art

Elena began her journey as an artist at an early age, and was apprenticed to Pat Witt at the Barn Studio of Art. While there, she developed her lifelong passion for painting and drawing, and gained exposure to the teaching of many great artists and instructors from the Philadelphia Museum School and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). Pivotal to Elena’s artistic development were the workshops she attended with Henry Hensche at the Cape School of Art and with PAFA teachers at the Barn Studio. She went on to attend PAFA herself, with a concentration in painting and drawing.

Elena spent several years working in illustration and graphic design. At the age of 30, she chose to return to painting and teaching all ages, including at the Banana Factory, for ArtsQuest, in Bethlehem and the Baum School of Art in Allentown. She taught for many years both publicly and privately, with a focus on historical periods of art, and has been asked to speak frequently about her life and art journey.

Elena is an active participant in the Lehigh Valley art scene. As President of the Lehigh Art Alliance (LAA), she administers the organization and the partnership LAA has developed with Historic Bethlehem Museums and Sites (HBMS). In 2021, Elena was the featured Artist of the Year for HBMS and was honored with a solo exhibition at the Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts. Her current practice is in plein air and studio painting, and she can often be found working on her art at the historic Luckenbach Mill in Bethlehem, where LAA has a year-round presence and exhibition space. She works primarily in watercolor and oil in a modern realist style in landscape, still life, and figure.

William Ressler, Watercolor

William Ressler was born on a farm near Chestnut Level in southern Lancaster County. He attended schools in Drumore and Quarryville before enlisting in the Army Specialized Reserve Training Program, where he was assigned to the Virginia Military Institute for three semesters studying basic engineering.

After serving in the Philippines with the 29th Engineer Topographic Battalion, William decided not to pursue engineering but become an artist instead. He enrolled in the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) and majored in illustration. After graduating, he became a freelance illustrator and painter in the Philadelphia area, executing commissions for a variety of editorial, corporate, institutional, and architectural clients. Also a graduate of Philadelphia Biblical University (now Cairn University), his art portraying Biblical themes has been published internationally.

William is a member of the American Watercolor Society and a life member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society. His drawings and paintings are in several private, corporate, and university collections, and his watercolor portrayals of scenes in and around Philadelphia have been published as widely collected limited edition prints. He was commissioned by the Philadelphia Flyers to paint a montage that was reproduced and distributed to season ticket holders. William’s artwork may also be viewed in exhibitions in Philadelphia, its suburbs, and the New Jersey Shore. This year he will participate in a house and garden tour, portraying an historic house in Chester County.

Silk Scarf Dyeing

In this workshop, you will dye your own 15" x 60" silk scarf, using flowers to make the ink dyes. The instructor will show examples of which flowers create the different looks you can achieve when using the bundle dye technique. She will demonstrate the steps as you follow along. Once you prepare your “bundle,” it must be steamed using specific equipment, taking about 45 minutes.

During this time, we will serve ice cream as the instructor talks about flowers, creating dyes, dye gardening, preparing fabrics for natural dyeing, and other topics. After this, the final reveal, and most exciting part of the workshop! Participants will leave with a finished scarf and a printout on how to re-create the process at home.

To create your unique piece, we will focus on elements of design and color. You will learn proper cleaning, sanding, and leveling techniques to prepare your “canvas,” as well as different methods of color application, giving you the opportunity to choose one that suits your personal taste. Some artists add adornments (e.g., leaves, etc.), while others like a more minimalistic look. You will decide after viewing a variety of finished works. We will then explore techniques for sealing your finished piece. Each participant will leave with a completed pumpkin just in time for the fall holidays.

Socrates Café

“Wisdom begins in wonder.”

— Socrates

Socrates Café encourages spirited discussion about issues and topics that challenge our beliefs about contemporary society and who we are as human beings. Our quest is not to arrive at answers or consensus but rather to develop more and better questions. We seek clarification of our own thinking and careful and respectful consideration of the views of others as we sift through, sort out, and attempt to arrive at new insights into the topics under discussion.

So if you enjoy thinking about and questioning commonly accepted assumptions, even your own, and if you are willing to challenge the taken-for-granted authority of any position or representation of fact or truth, join us at Socrates Café.

What causes famine? How can it be prevented in the future?

Fears of global food shortages have followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has disrupted shipments from the major grain producer. Iran at a Crossroads

What is the future for relations between Iran and the United States? By the fall of 2022, Iran was in a state of turmoil due to widespread protests against government-enforced wearing of the hijab, a failing economy, an ineffective new president, and the looming succession of the country’s leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. Abroad, renewal of the Iran nuclear deal seemed doubtful, and tensions remain high between Iran, Israel, and Arab states. Many Iranians have lost hope of a better future, and the country seems to be at a crossroads. How should the United States deal with it?

The Suez Canal: Its History & Impact on the World

When the Suez Canal opened in 1869, the world became a smaller place — the distance between Europe and Asia cut by 5,500 miles. But throughout its history, the canal has been the center of struggles: the Ottomans in World War I, the Germans in World War II, nationalization by Egypt, and attacks by the British, French, and Israelis in 1956. In 1967, the Six-Day War closed the canal for eight years. In 2021, the Ever Given grounded there, closing the canal for six days and bringing 12% of the world’s commerce to a standstill.

Come learn about the construction of the Suez Canal under Ferdinand de Lesseps. In the beginning, it allowed the British to dominate world trade; today, it has become a key maritime choke point.

The Hubble Space Telescope launched in 1990 provided new views of the universe that have riveted us ever since. In 2021, a new window on the universe opened with the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope. By far the most complex device ever placed in space, Webb is allowing us to see how the first stars and galaxies emerged from the Dark Ages of the early universe, and to assay the atmospheres of planets beyond our solar system in a search for extraterrestrial life.

The Beach Boys: When the Good Vibrations Turned Bad

The Beach Boys defined the joy and optimism of America in the early 1960s. They were the first great American rock and roll band, and their songs celebrated the Fun, Fun, Fun of that more innocent time.

After achieving critical success with the groundbreaking Pet Sounds album and the Good Vibrations single, the band’s popularity fell off a cliff. Principal songwriter Brian Wilson lapsed into a long period of withdrawal and decline. His younger brothers led the group through the dark end of the decade, bringing Charles Manson into their circle. Despite it all, the group produced some of its best music. At the time, it went largely unheard. Now is your chance to listen to the music and hear their story.

Her efforts were not without controversy, as she was involved in a split in the movement, often giving speeches that are viewed today as anti-immigrant and anti-Black suffrage. She is also famous for voting illegally in 1872, going on trial, and never paying a penalty or serving time. Her cat, Schmagel, auditioned and was picked over many experienced cat performers, and her dog, Ritz, was also chosen to be the pesky dog in the movie. Britany’s story of adopting a rescue cat eight years ago to now performing in major commercials and movies is incredible. In 2022, her animals appeared in Hocus Pocus 2 and the TV show Blue Bloods, as well as numerous TV commercials, including spots for Birkenstocks, Meow Mix, Bark Box, and Sealy. Movies That Inspire: The Fabelmans

As the most commercially successful director of all time, he has earned three Academy Awards, a Kennedy Center Honor, four Directors Guild of America Awards, two BAFTA Awards, a Cecil B. DeMille Award, and an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award.

In his latest film, The Fabelmans, Spielberg has directed a semi-autobiographical story loosely based on his own life. It centers on his adolescent years spent in Phoenix, Arizona, where he had his share of challenges within both the home and the community. However, at the age of 12, he filmed his first home movie, and from that point on, the art of filmmaking became a prime interest that would lead to a very rewarding career. Bitwarden 101

Many of us depend on the internet to do various things, from banking to reading news and communicating. This requires having passwords to access websites. These can be hard to remember, and so we use simple passwords and use the same password on more than one website. If our device is compromised, an intruder can get all of our passwords, which can impact our finances and even identity.

Password managers help you create more complex passwords and auto-fill them on login screens so you have unique passwords that you don’t have to remember. This makes it more difficult for your passwords and identity to be stolen. The Computer Club recommends using either Bitwarden (because it is an open-source software) or 1Password software, or in an Apple environment, Keychain.

In this class we will learn what makes a strong password, how to create one, how to automatically fill the login, and how to securely share some or all of our passwords with important people. Though Bitwarden can be used on many platforms — including Apple, PC, tablets, phones, and more — we will focus on Windows devices in the demo.

Eugene Atget (1857–1927), Brassaï (1899–1984), and Robert Doisneau (1912–1994) provided the groundwork for both city landscape and street photography. From Atget’s formal landscapes of deserted streets in the City of Light, to Brasssaï’s intimate view of a bohemian nighttime Paris, to Doisneau’s impromptu portraits of the people who made the city unique, the work of these men has provided a road map for today’s photographers.

Working Sustainably With Nature

Through a grant, Willow Valley Communities was selected to participate in campus sustainability planning. A group of volunteer Residents was formed and tasked with organizing and providing community Residents with educational seminars over the coming months. This initiative focuses on learning and understanding ecological landscapes.

In addition to the educational seminars, Willow Valley Communities will receive a site-specific green master plan, provided by LandStudies, a landscape architecture firm. This design will allow Willow Valley Communities to implement green infrastructure changes over the coming years to improve wildlife habitat, increase native landscapes, and benefit water quality.

Water Conservation Efforts in Lancaster County

Matt Kofroth, honored with the Watershed Champion Award by the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, has had an impact on each downstream neighbor who has benefited from the many projects and programs he’s implemented. As the watershed specialist at the Lancaster County Conservation District for almost 25 years, he has coordinated volunteer monitoring programs, helped to organize local watershed associations, reviewed and written grants for restoration projects, and created resources for county homeowners to improve their water use. His innovations in watershed education have empowered numerous volunteers to make a difference in their own watershed.

In his talk, Matt will discuss the landscape of the county and how it affects water quality both here and in the Chesapeake Bay. He will also review how Lancaster County residents can get involved in local conservation and monitoring efforts.

The Double Life of Pollinators

Attracting pollinators to your in-ground or raised bed has an extra benefit: many are predators or parasitoids of our most annoying landscape pests. Field Trip to Southeast Agricultural Research & Extension Center (SEAREC)

What better way to spend a summer’s morning than passing through a covered bridge and strolling into a bloom-filled garden — several in fact. You are invited to get to know a little-known oasis of plant research and demonstration not too far from us: the Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SEAREC), located on a family farm near Manheim.

Learn about the value and beauty of native plants and discover new ways to garden, from vegetable growing in raised beds to French-inspired “potager” and butterfly gardens. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn about SEAREC’s highly regarded pollinator research project. Research on the center’s 155 acres involves Penn State’s Department of Plant Sciences, Entomology, and Plant Pathology, plus the USDA. The model “Idea Gardens” are designed and maintained by volunteers in Lancaster County’s Master Gardener program.

Participants will meet at the location at 1446 Auction Road at 9:00 a.m. If you are in need of transportation, a limited amount of seating is provided on a shuttle bus.
