WELCOME TO THE TEAM! Hi, my name is Kylie and I am in third grade at Hovatter and a cheerleader with Maryland Twisters! I am so excited to be a part of the junior writers team!

Jackson is a 6th grader who loves golf, baseball, cooking, and swimming breaststroke. He has been doing Polish Saturday school at the Polish Embassyl for 8 years now and is completely fluent in Polish and English. He was only 18 months old when his family moved to Willowsford and he was part of the Jr Chef Academy at Willowsford from the very beginning. This really inspired him to love trying new foods and cooking.

Maks is a 4th grader who loves computers, coding, rock climbing, basketball, ice skating, playing chess, and loves to read. He really wants to start an entrepreneurial club in the future as well as his own small business. Maks is bilingual in Polish and English and also goes to Polish school at the Polish Embassy on Saturdays. He was born and raised in Willowsford and loves volunteering to do egg washing at the Willowsford Farm and all the different veggies and fruits we get in our farm shares.

NOTE FROM YOUR PUBLISHER Hello, Willowsford community residents,

A

s the leaves change and the air turns crisper, we are delighted to present the October issue of Stroll Willowsford, dedicated to the power of community and the happiness it brings into our lives. At the heart of our mission is a simple truth: feeling connected to those around us fosters a sense of belonging and contentment that enriches our daily lives. Stroll Willowsford has always been more than a publication; it’s a bridge that unites you as neighbors, as friends, and as a thriving community. Our goal remains steadfast – to bring each and every resident of Willowsford together, not only personally but professionally as well. We believe that a strong community is one where residents can connect on multiple levels, sharing their stories, experiences, and expertise. Every single resident is invited to be a vital part of this collective tapestry. Your stories matter, your photos capture our community, and your voice strengthens our shared narrative. We’re always on the lookout for cover spotlight families, vacation tales, glimpses into your homes, stories about your pets, special stories about your wonderful kids, insights into healthy living, recipes to swap, nominations for outstanding neighbors making a difference in our community, and so much more. We work hard to offer something for everyone in every single issue of Stroll Willowsford and with our SW Junior Writer Team and user-friendly questionnaires, we make it easy to contribute. Remember, none of this would be possible without our dedicated sponsors, many of whom are your own neighbors. These trusted local businesses make Stroll Willowsford possible for the opportunity to earn your trust, your business, and your referrals. Please make these businesses a choice when you need a product or service to thank them for their investment. As we stroll into October, let’s continue to explore, connect, and create lasting memories together. Warm regards,

With my family, from left, my husband Frank (32 years married!), my son Alex (26) and my daughter Haley (22).

“We are constituted so that simple acts of kindness, such as giving to charity or expressing gratitude, have a positive effect on our long-term moods. The key to the happy life, it seems, is the good life: a life with sustained relationships, challenging work, and connections to community.” – PAUL BLOOM

For me and many of you, October means Willowsford Kitchen’s gourmet caramel apple dipping station is coming soon. This delicious treat can only be found at AutumnFest on Saturday, October 21st at The Lodge. Whether it is your first time attending or your eighth, you will not be disappointed. NOTES FROM YOUR WILLOWSFORD HOA

Amenity Usage Guidelines BY SUSAN WALTERS, CMCA®, AMS® WILLOWSFORD HOA ASSISTANT COMMUNITY MANAGER PHOTOS BY ALAN BUSHNELL

W

illowsford residents have an abundance of amenities ranging from disc golf and a bike course to beautifully designed clubhouses that can be reserved for private rentals. The Willowsford Amenity Usage Guidelines, or AUGs, provide general rules for amenity access and use including hours of the facilities, rental information, trail use and so much more. These guidelines have recently been updated based on resident feedback received over the years. Below are a few notable changes and additions. Commercial and Professional Sales: Clarity regarding the definition of commercial and professional sales was added to the document as well as the addition of the following guideline regarding community groups and sales: Community Groups members are not permitted to

use the Amenities and Grounds to directly benefit their Commercial or Professional Sales business including the sales of products or services with the exception of professional photography which requires permission from the Association. Professional Photography/ Videography: There is no longer a separate policy regarding professional photography and videography on Willowsford property. To simplify the process, general guidelines for photographers/ videographers were added to the Amenity Usage Guidelines instead of a separate policy that also dictated certain fees regardless of whether the photographer was a resident or not. Non-resident photographers/videographers may not take photos/videos on Willowsford or Conservancy property without Association or Conservancy permission and are required to pay a fee (fee schedule is included as an exhibit to the AUGs. Residents may take photos on the property at no fee, even if using a non-resident professional photographer/videographer. Fitness Center: while fitness center guidelines have not changed, it is worth noting that residents between the ages of 14 and 17 must have a Fitness Center Use Agreement submitted by their guardian on file with the Association. Residents under the age of 14 will be considered on a case-by-case basis with written authorization from their guardian as well as written certification by a licensed personal trainer indicating that they have been trained on and are competent to use the facility’s fitness equipment. One final revision of note is the addition of an option for residents with grandchildren and children not living in their home to register them for activities and events: Authorized guests such as grandchildren or children not living in the home permanently, may be eligible (subject to Management’s approval) to register for events and programming depending on the type of programming and so long as registration has been open to residents for a period of time as determined by Management.

Please take a moment to review the Amenity Usage Guidelines at WillowsfordLife.com > Document Center.

WILLOWSFORD CONSERVANCY

BOUNTIFUL HARVEST: CSA shares enhance fall dishes! BY AMANDA MATHIS

A

s the leaves change and the days become shorter, we’re looking ahead to cozy nights of soups and roasted veggies from Willowsford Farm. Our Farm and selected quality partners have supplied our community with delicious produce for many homecooked meals for over a decade. A convenient way to enjoy local produce is through our Willowsford CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program, which brings the freshest locally grown produce to you and your family right to your home or the Farm Stand.

Bring The Freshest Produce to Your Table If you want your family’s freshest locally grown vegetables, joining the Willowsford CSA program is a straightforward solution. CSA programs give small farms a crucial economic boost, allow consumers to develop relationships with those who grow their food, and bring us back to eating in season. Willowsford’s CSA season starts mid-May, and winter shares start in October and run through January. Grass-fed beef, organic produce, pies, and cut flowers are available as an optional add-on. What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)? “CSA” stands for Community Supported Agriculture, which allows you to purchase products directly from the Farm. Being part of a CSA program allows an alternative to grocery store shopping. Members pre-pay for a subscription to the upcoming season’s harvest to receive organic and nutritious food at its freshest. By being a member of the CSA, you join neighbors and other supporters in getting to know the Farm Team that grows your food right here in the Willowsford Community.

How The Willowsford CSA Program Works During the Spring and Summer growing seasons, our experienced Farm Team harvests the vegetables and packs a share for each member of our CSA community. Enjoy creativity in the kitchen by cooking with some of your favorite vegetables and trying new ones. A Farmer's Choice CSA lets you step out of your routine as our Farm Team curates a selection of farm-fresh produce each week. Picking Up Your CSA Willowsford Farm offers many pick-up options throughout the year. You can pick up your share at the Farm Stand Boat House, or have your produce delivered (weekly in the summer and bi-weekly in the winter season) for your convenience. Learn More About Your Local Farm With over 60 years of experience, the Willowsford Farm Team is committed to providing you with the best products to enjoy at home. Managed by Andrew Dunham and the dedicated Willowsford Farm team, collectively, they bring expertise that makes our Farm one of the finest in the region. NOTABLE NEIGHBOR

Honoring Jill Nolton BY RESIDENT AND STROLL INTERN HANNAH CORBITT THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY THE VIRGINIA INSTITUTE FOR SURGICAL ARTS

G

reat neighbors can be defined by the effort they put into their community and the kindness they bring to their neighbors. Jill Nolton, a resident of Willowsford the Grange, puts effort into all of these. In the 10 years Jill has lived in Willowsford, she has been recognized for being friendly to both her neighbors and the environment. Jill helps manage and maintain the Willowsford Grange community garden, which is an area with garden plots available to Willowsford residents and run by Christian Somer. According to Jill’s neighborhood friends, she has always been considerate and helpful to the environment. Jill’s beautiful backyard is actually planted with native species and is a great environment for pollinators. Back when Jill’s two kids, David and Lena, were in elementary school, Jill helped plan a special first day of school surprise for all of the excited elementary schoolers at the bus stop for several years. Jill’s home is right in front of the elementary bus stop, so she would set up special treats like donuts outside of her house. This way all of the kids could have some breakfast

with friends and parents before their first day. Duck Donuts was always the go-to donut place for Jill when setting up for this fun event. Jill and her two kids are involved in the Willowsford Waves swim team as well; David is a swim coach and Lena is a swimmer. She is always there to help, cheer on her daughter and friends, and bring food for the team breakfasts. Volunteering is another thing Jill does around the community. She volunteers at Brambleton Middle and Independence High School to stay active as a parent with her kids in those schools. She also helps out at the Willowsford Farm Stand, which always appreciates volunteers as a part of the loving Willowsford community. Jill is loved by neighbors and friends not just for her volunteering and involvement in the community, but also for being a great friend and a great neighbor. Thank you, Jill!

“Jill is a wonderful friend and neighbor with a big heart and a passion for the environment and everything our neighborhood has to offer.” MEGHAN CORBITT

The Answer to Your Next Home Meal Palate Sensations WRITTEN BY STROLL WILLOWSFORD STAFF WRITER LIA HOBEL

C

ooking from the heart can add love to each tasteful bite. Those served a meal made by a passionate cook can certainly taste the difference. Providing loving ingredients to create cuisine that makes taste buds dance is a service that Meagan Morris, the executive chef for Palate Sensations, wants everyone to experience. “What sets us apart is our personality and our passion for food,” she explains. “Everything is made from scratch with the best quality ingredients we can find.” Chef Meagan began to offer her personal chef services in 2019 and officially opened Palate Sensations in January of 2020. Her culinary spark ignited at the age of six. She remembers watching Julia Child cook, understanding her love for cooking, and wanting that for herself. She also watched a handful of other cooking shows with her mom, such as Justin from Louisiana and Frugal Gourmet. From there, she began to sneak into the kitchen when no one was around to flip eggs or play restaurant with her sister in the summertime. As she got older, Meagan worked as a host and server in high school and studied at Chantilly Academy for Culinary Arts. She then graduated from Pennsylvania College of Technology with a dual degree in culinary arts and hospitality management. For the next 14 years, Meagan worked in all sectors of the food industry, including Wegmans, Georgia Browns, served as operations manager at La Madeleine, and was the Executive chef in corporate dining.

36

October 2023

Palate Sensations has everyone in mind, whether it’s hosting a dinner party and leaving the cooking to the pros, meal prepping, or cooking lessons. Think of it as the solution for any food-driven event, whether it’s a birthday, anniversary dinner, to doing the grocery shopping and prepping for weekly meals. Her services include: • Personal chef to Special Events (Occasions) • Meal prep • Events over 2 to Corporate Catering • Birthday parties • Cooking lessons for all Meal prep services is a popular choice, and it’s easy to see why. “Meal prep clients get sent a detailed questionnaire where they tell me likes and dislikes pertaining to proteins, dairy, sugar and if they have any allergy or health restrictions that I should be aware of,” says Meagan. “From there, I make a customized menu each week for that family, which gets sent out 72 hours before the cook date.” Clients have time to let her know if they would like to change anything and she’ll suggest options. “I then shop for groceries usually the night before or the day of the cook time, from stores like Wegmans, Whole Foods, Traders Joes and prepares everything in their home or my

prep kitchen.” With the bulk of the work done, clients just have the simple task to reheat the meal at their convenience. For special occasion dinner parties, Meagan says they normally consist of four courses. Brunch and appetizer parties are also options offered to clients. As Meagan explains, there’s “no one size fits all.” Catering services also run the same way with no two events alike. “We can do corporate events, drop off services, or even weddings,” Meagan explains. Furthermore, Palate Sensations offers cooking parties for ages four to 12. “It is an interactive experience where each child will get to create what they eat.” They are typically two hours in length. There are menus to choose from that are appropriate for all ages and cooking experiences. “For the more experienced little chef we offer Cupcake Wars theme and Iron Chef theme parties. This is a great idea for your son or daughter who enjoy cooking and want to be able to create something from scratch and learn new skills.” Knowing what kids like is something she knows well from her own household. Meagan has two children, nine and a 10-month-old, which leaves little free time. Her oldest plays basketball and baseball and she attends all practices and games. She says her vocal, energetic 12-monthold loves spending all his time with her too. “Add a business to that and my life some people call a circus, but I love every minute of it,” she shares. “When I get a spare moment (which is nonexistent currently), I enjoy working out, running, and going to happy hour or eating at new places. I also love a good beach, anywhere in the Caribbean and usually try to do that once a year.” Meagan loves connecting with Willowsford families and has served a few of them and would love the opportunity to share her culinary talents in more Willowsford kitchens. “The few that I have had the pleasure to serve are amazing, loving people that bring the community together. When I step into their homes, I feel an immediate connection (or maybe should say extension) as though I am cooking for my own family.” Interested in experiencing a culinary exploration with love in every bite? Connect with Meagan today and discover why Palate Sensations is a must try.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Turning Lemons Into Lemonade THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY LUX DENTAL CENTER

T

he Morgenthalers in the Grange are among the millions of Americans who have been touched by a devastating neurodegenerative disease called Lewy Body Dementia (LBD). LBD is the second most common form of dementia and as of now, there is no cure or disease-modifying treatment available. After watching their beloved hero and grandfather, David Newell, whom they affectionately referred to as Grand Dude, suffer from the disease for 8 years, the Morgenthaler children decided to take action! In Grand Dude’s memory, and to help others affected by LBD, they hosted their second annual “Lemonade for Lewy Body” stand at the Willowsford Farm Stand! Ice-cold organic lemonade and organic strawberry lemonade sold for the amazing price of $0.50 per cup, and any additional donation amounts were welcome, too!

Donations were processed through Willowsford Cares (a 501c3 organization), with proceeds benefitting the Lewy Body Dementia Association, which promotes research, education, and support for patients, families, and caregivers. Made known by Robin Williams’ postmortem diagnosis, LBD is a terminal disease that manifests in dementia, Parkinson’s symptoms, and mental health issues. Sufferers and their families are desperate for a cure or disease-modifying treatments. The Morganthalers and Willowsford Cares are grateful to the community for raising more than $2,000 to help turn lemons into lemonade!

Have you heard about the Willowsford Discovery Camp? It is our community’s very own summer camp! Ranging from about 5-15 years of age, the camp offers all ages its many activities. The camp starts during the second half of summer break and continues for four weeks. There are a variety of activities that you do with your group during the week. Each group is assigned different activities for different days. Each week there are different themes, and the activities are built around that theme. Some of the activities the week I attended were culinary, STEM, art, agriculture, and recreation. Every activity is fun in its own unique way. On the agriculture day, campers could see and learn about our amazing farmstand. You are allowed to plant your own basil, bring home various hand-picked vegetables, and take a tractor ride through the many acres of farmland. In STEM, campers learned about aerospace engineering and got to build their own rocket. Throughout the day campers worked with the amazing teachers and improved the rocket to go a farther distance. But that’s not all, you are even able to make a paper airplane that goes a long distance. Next, on the art day, campers could create amazing masterpieces using paint and clay. It is a great way to get messy and have lots of fun. Recreation is another one of the activities the camp offers. You get to spend the whole day playing different organized games outside and having absolute fun. From tug-of-war to Capture the Flag, the recreation day keeps you busy in the best way possible. Last but definitely not least, is culinary day. On the culinary day, campers could cook a variety of delicious food such as empanadas, cake pops, cookies, popcorn, and even color-changing drinks! Don’t worry though if you’re vegetarian, vegan, or have allergies, the chefs there have a variety of vegan/vegetarian options as well as allergen-free dishes. There was no need to pack food for that day because you prepare and cook your own snack and lunch! But there’s even more! Campers who are signed up for ‘extended day’ are able to chill at the pool in the afternoons. All in all, our Willowsford Discovery camp offers a wide variety of activities for all campers to enjoy. You can learn more about the camp as well as sign up on our community website. I recommend checking it out when making plans for next summer!

PRECIOUS PETS Karma

Living in Purr-adise: Meet the Liesemers’ fluffiest family members! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER ANNA ROSE THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY MIGHTY CLEAN CARPET CARE

This is a continuing conversation with the Liesemers (Jeff, Leigh, and Kate, 14) who live in the Grove and have been Willowsford residents for 9 years. They are lucky to share their home with 8 pets; 2 dogs and 6 cats. They love their fluffy crew more than anything! Last month we talked about your cute dogs? Can you tell me about your cats?

Yes! Adelaide (Addie) was an impulse purchase. We had already arranged for our first 2 Birmans to come to us and were not looking for a 3rd cat. But we saw her picture on Facebook and fell in love! She was just a tiny little ball of fluff when we got her! She fit right in with the dogs and assumed she was a puppy and just part of the pack. Addie is a very quiet, mellow, laid back, and sweet girl. She’s super easy-going (typical of the Persian breed). She’s friendly and curious and is usually one of the first ones to greet guests or workmen in the house. She’s a lovely girl who loves to be brushed and have her little bitty heart-shaped nose rubbed.

You mentioned “Birmans”?

Yes! Karma and Kismet are both 4 year-old Birmans and came to us at 4 months old from a breeder in Verona, Italy. I had always wanted a Birman and after lots of research found out they are very hard to find in America. For some reason they are not common here, but are very popular in Europe. We had to find a breeder overseas and have the kittens brought to the US. The breeder had a few kittens available so we messaged back and forth until we decided on Karma and Kismet. They are technically uncle/nephew but they were born 3 days apart and raised together so they think they’re brothers! They are bonded and BFFs. Kismet was the kitten we chose first. He is my dream cat! Just look at that face! And now you have a collection of Birmans!?

Adelaide

46

October 2023

Yes! While on vacation in Italy last year, we found ourselves in Verona for a day. We contacted Karma and Kismet’s breeder to let her know we were in town. We’d never met her in person, just chatted online. So she came to town to meet us. That’s when we discovered she actually didn’t speak any English! But thanks to Google Translate we made it work! She toured us around her city all day and then offered to bring us to her home because she had several litters of kittens. OF COURSE we want to go play with kittens! So she drove us to her beautiful home on a hilltop

overlooking Verona and that’s when we met Vespa. We fell in love at first sight! Verona is our lucky cat... as in, we got lucky to get her! When we met Vespa, we had picked out another female kitten to buy with him. She unfortunately was not thriving and the breeder didn’t think she’d do well on the long trip to the US, so the breeder actually selected Verona for us from her litters as a companion for Vespa. She flew to us with Vespa using the same pet nanny as Karma and Kismet. And there’s a kitten here, too! Kismet

Share your pet pics with us! Email billie.rose@strollmag.com.

Dolce is our baby! Because the cats from Italy have to be a bit older to travel here (they have to have all of their shots) we missed out on their fluffiest stages of life; the cute little puffball that’s nothing but fur and eyes! So when we got Verona & Vespa we told the breeder that we wanted the option to have just 1 litter so we could experience the joy of Birman babies. Verona and Vespa are NOT related in any way, though they were raised together and were bonded when they came. So once they were old enough we let them breed. Verona got pregnant quickly, and much to our surprise had a litter of just 1 kitten. While we would have enjoyed having several Birbabies to raise and watch grow, this actually made it easy for us cause we knew exactly which kitten we would keep. Dolce was born on Feb 27, 2023 in our master bathroom. Leigh helped Verona through her labor and birth and got to cut the cord. We have raised Dolce from that very first day and have loved every second of watching her grow and develop and become an irreplaceable part of the family. I think all of your cats are so adorable! Thank you for telling us more about them!

The Lion King is our favorite movie and seeing the show come to life was amazing. We loved the costumes and the special effects. We sang along to all of the songs and there were even a couple of new songs that weren’t in the movie. Our favorite part was when the animals walked through the audience and we got to see them up close. We had so much fun and we already want to go back and see it again!”

Summer Travels to Poland BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER MAKS HOFFMAN THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY FORTIFY CHIROPRACTIC AND SPORTS REHAB

E

very other Summer my family tries to go to Poland to visit family and go sightseeing. On our last trip, we were there for almost 6 weeks! My parents were a little nervous about going there with the war in Ukraine but we felt very safe once we saw the US military presence there. It opened our eyes to see lines of people and kids at the Polish Red Cross waiting for supplies and food. There were kids my age at the playgrounds speaking Ukrainian. I knew they had to leave their homes and couldn’t imagine what that felt like. It really made us appreciate what we have. We still have a lot of family there including my great-grandma, aunts, uncles, cousins, and second cousins.

Our family lives in a small town, Bilgoraj, where we spent most of our time with family, but we also saw family in Krakow and Rzeszow which are much bigger cities. In Krakow, we visited a medieval castle, Wawel. It was never destroyed by any of the World Wars. My Uncle took us on a sunset cruise around the castle on the country’s famous river, Wisla. My favorite part of Krakow though, was a statue of a dragon that breathes fire every 30 minutes. They have a very interesting legend about this dragon at Wawel.

50

October 2023

We also saw Wieliczka, which is a giant underground Salt Mine. It’s like an underground city all carved out of salt. I could not believe how big it was, and it dates back to the 13th century. There were life-sized people carved out of salt, and a chapel carved out of salt. People get married there. Krakow also had interesting museums, Churches, Holy sites, as well as historical sites such as the Cloth Hall, and Sukiennice, which was a major center for international trade. Today they still have so many interesting shops there selling items such as Polish art, pottery, souvenirs, clothing, hand-carved kids’ swords and shields.

Not far from Krakow, we drove up to the mountains to Zakopane. There we took an hour-long horse-drawn carriage ride and hiked up to a glacier lake called Morskie Oko. While the view wasn’t what we’d normally expect due to rain and clouds, it was still spectacular to see a crystal-clear lake with fish as far as you can see. We found some very interesting restaurants in Zakopane, one even had actors acting out an actual historic mountain pub. The last city we visited was Warsaw, which is the nation’s capital. While it was leveled during WW2, they did a beautiful job rebuilding according to architectural plans they had saved so it looked very much like it did before the war. There were so many amazing restaurants. Polish food is so delicious! We ate so many pierogi (big dumplings) with all kinds of fillings ranging from blueberries, strawberries, cheese and potatoes, meat, sauerkraut and mushroom. We also had golabki (stuffed cabbage), zapiekanki (Polish street food which is toast with melted cheese and sauteed mushrooms), kielbasa (sausage), paczki (jelly-filled donuts), and nalesniki (crepes). They also had a science museum called the Copernicus Science Centre. It was such an interesting place both for kids and adults with very interactive exhibitions. Overall, Poland was actually a very inexpensive, family-friendly European destination once you got there. We loved visiting Poland and cannot wait to visit again.

and budgets. Upon arrival, it becomes immediately clear that Luckett’s has been doing this for 25 years. The shopping experience is delightful and easy: Mimosas and Bloody Marys are available at check-in along with maps and bags; wagons are available to rent for a small fee, or visitors are welcome to bring their own; their famous “pink shirt service” allows shoppers to put even the smallest purchases on hold until they’re ready to leave. Rented moving trucks dot the parking field as a testament to the number of great discoveries that can be found in an afternoon.

In addition to the fabulous shopping, the market offers plenty of other amenities to make a day, or even a weekend out of it: food truck and food booth options, live music, a beer garden, open space for kids to play, and workshops of all kinds are available to enjoy. If you haven’t explored a Luckett’s Market yet, you’re in luck! The Fall Market is happening this month, October 13-15 at the Clarke County Fairgrounds in Berryville. Fueling Community Spirit: An Exotic Car Show BY RESIDENT NICOLE HILLYARD THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY HILLYARD AUTOMOTIVE

My husband, Mike, and I, owners of Hillyard Automotive, with our friends at Stacked Auto Haus, attended the Exotic Car Show hosted by Cana Vineyards and Winery of Middleburg, with our families on Sunday, August 13. There were exotic and high-end vehicles such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Mclaren, and more; vehicles you would see being stored at Stacked Auto Haus, or being worked on at Hillyard Automotive, as well as cruising the streets of northern Virginia. Adrenaline Lifestyles and DC Car Scene are local car clubs that cruised together to show off their rides at the event. They had many food trucks, live entertainment, and of course Cana’s award-winning wine. We really enjoy attending these events with our family and friends. Hillyard Automotive and Stacked Auto Haus look forward to seeing our community at the next car enthusiast/family event. Building Faith Based Community over Burgers! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER JACKSON HOFFMAN THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY CAPITAL TRIMLIGHT

T

he Catholic Families of Willowsford got together this summer for our First Annual BBQ. We met at Pin Oak Park and had a great turnout with about 15 families. Everyone was welcome to this wonderful community event! My parents provided the burgers and hot dogs while everyone brought dishes to share. The Jordan family helped with grilling everything last minute when we had a technical issue but everything came together beautifully and everyone pitched in to help. The HOA recently installed a new swing set at the park which us kids took full advantage of. We also played games like Capture the Flag and kickball, which were really fun. We also prayed together and even got a blessing from one of our local priests who came, Father James Searby, from Saint Timothy’s Catholic Church in Chantilly. Several of our neighborhood kids attend school there. My brother and I love altar serving for Father Searby because he always has the best homilies and has such interesting stories to share. He likes to travel a lot like we do and always gives us helpful tips before our international trips. Before he was a priest, Fr. Searby was the Marketing Director for the Ringling Brothers in Manhattan and was even chased by a Rhino once! Fr. Searby often talked about the importance of building community and stressed that if

we want to change the world it all starts at home with our families and in our community. Sometimes living in suburban towns can feel lonely, especially because a lot of families are transplants to this area and moved here for work or school. Many have families in other states. Together we can not only support each other but also do charitable acts locally such as helping the food pantry or local shelters. It was so nice to make the connection with other families we go to Church with— especially because our closest Catholic Church, Corpus Christi, doesn’t have a Parish Hall or school yet. We are looking forward to our next fall event, a Chili cookoff!

Turning Dungy Garages to Exceptional Space GarageExperts WRITTEN BY STROLL WILLOWSFORD STAFF WRITER LIA HOBEL

When you think of revamping your home, the garage might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But let’s reframe that thinking for you. Have you ever felt like you’ve cleaned the garage to just have it chaotic in a week? Or perhaps the walls are unfinished and unsightly and could use a quality facelift? The answer is a garage transformation to fit your lifestyle and budget. GarageExperts of Northern Virginia are ready to show you what a garage makeover can mean— and even make it your favorite new space in the home. “We strive to be a trusted provider of quality, longlasting products, and services,” shared owner, Mitch Brown, who once was a government contractor for 25 years before joining GarageExperts. Brown said he fell in love with the GarageExperts concept, which specializes in epoxy flooring, custom cabinets, slat wall organization and other storage solutions. The best part? Everything comes with a lifetime warranty. As such, it’s understandable that cabinets, GarageFX flooring, and slat wall are the three most popular selections by GarageExperts clients. Mitch explains that building and establishing lasting relationships with their customer base is their number one goal. “We get a lot of our business from referrals and repeat customers,” he adds. “We do ‘whatever it takes’ to exceed customers’ expectations. We love what we do, and we get great joy from transforming your space into an organized area that you are excited to spend time in.” Helping to make it all possible, are the employees behind the company brand. Mitch says it’s them who “perform the magic” and make a client’s dream space come to life. “Our staff is what makes for the best contracting experience. It starts with Larissa in the office taking calls to answer questions, and then scheduling appointments and installations.” From there, it goes to Mitch with the consultation phase who is passionate about the product and connecting with potential 62

October 2023

customers. “We do not believe in hard selling tactics, but educating potential customers so that they can make the best decision for them and their families.” Finally, it moves to the top-notch installation teams led by Leo, who takes pride in every job his teams install. The “whatever it takes” mindset is shared by all hands that bring a garage project to fruition. The company also has many accolades. GarageExperts were recently named the 2023 Garage Remodeler of the Year by NorthernVirginia Magazine. “We have continually been a Diamond Franchise from GarageExperts corporate since we started. We are consistently ranked in the Top 10 franchises across the country every month for revenue and customer satisfaction.” Over a thousand flooring projects were completed in 2022. “Our GarageFX flooring system uses an epoxy primer, decorative flakes and Ultra High Solids (UHS) Polyaspartic Topcoat,” he shares. The concrete is diamond grinded, then repairs to the concrete are performed before epoxy primer is applied and decorative flakes are broadcasted. “Once the flakes dry into the epoxy, the floor is scrapped, vacuumed up and the UHS Polyaspartic Topcoat is applied. This system gives you a lifetime warranty.” Color options are endless, with 142 different colors offered. If you’re not able to find something out of those color options, more are available. As Mitch explains, “everything is customizable, and you can even create your own blend. There is even glowin-the-dark flakes and glitter flakes available.” The company performs not only home garages, but commercial and government work too. “We are currently performing work at ‘The Executive Residence’ (aka “The White House”),” he says. “We are also performing all the epoxy work for Crumbl Cookies and the Flagship car washes in Maryland and Virginia.”

MEET THE FAMILY BEHIND GARAGEEXPERTS

Mitch Brown and his wife, Erika Caruthers, own multiple GarageExperts franchises in Northern Virginia. As a government contractor, Mitch was involved in SCIF construction all over the globe. Erika is a 5th grade teacher at Flint Hill Lower School in Oakton. With five kids between them ranging in age from 2417, Mitch and Erika are entering a new phase in life. With only one child at home full time, they have been learning to navigate the elusive free time on the weekends that they did not have while coaching, cheering, timing, and volunteering for the kids’ various sports. Taking trips to visit their children in college has become a favorite pass time, but they miss the hectic, noisy weekends of the past. After residing in Leesburg for many years, Mitch and Erika currently live in Oakton, VA. As a family, they enjoy traveling around the world. Most recent travels include Hawaii, Italy, Switzerland, Greece, Costa Rica, Mexico, France, Spain, and the Caribbean. Upcoming travel includes a trip to Ireland. Fit for a pristine garage, is the love that Mitch has for his Corvettes and Harleys. He has a new 2024 Corvette arriving in October 2023.

“We love what we do, and we get great joy from transforming your space into an organized area that you are excited to spend time in.”

CONNECTING WITH STROLL MAGAZINE

The Browns have many family friends who reside in the Willowsford community. “As former residents from Hamlets of Red Cedar in Leesburg, many of our friends have relocated to Willowsford,” he says. “As a community that values family so much, it is our honor to help make the busy lives of the residents a little more enjoyable.” He also adds that there’s also “no other community” like Willowsford. “It’s gorgeous,” he exclaims. “We are honored to be able to provide our services within this incredible community.”

OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES

Pathway to Paradise Attention to detail creates a backyard ready for laid-back entertaining! PHOTOS BY GREG SMITH WITH THRU YOUR LENS THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY HARRIFORD EXTERIOR RESTORATION

B

rad Scott, a dedicated CFO and father of six, embarked on a remarkable journey when he and his family moved to the vibrant Willowsford community in October 2018. Their story is one of transformation, turning a newly constructed house into a dream home complete with lush greenspaces, a refreshing pool, and inviting outdoor spaces. Having lived in various states, including California, Texas, and Ohio, the Scotts knew they wanted a fresh start in a community that resonated with their family values. Brad explained, “We love it here – the biggest thing for us was moving to a new community; we didn’t want to try to have to fit into an already established community. We love the beautiful greenspaces and trails.”

66

October 2023

Initially, their vision for the property was straightforward—a deck and a patio. However, Brad and his wife realized that they wanted more than just outdoor spaces. They yearned to provide their children with a wholesome experience and the ability to entertain friends and family. Thus, the idea of a pool and other landscaping feature began to take shape. The decision to work with Deckscapes, a reputable landscaping and outdoor design company, proved to be pivotal. Brad emphasized the importance of open communication during the design process. “We went through all the details that I wasn’t able to go through with other companies. It was very detailed upfront, so we didn’t have to worry about change orders or anything like that.” Deckscapes delivered beyond expectations, creating a pool, a custom fire pit, and meticulously designed landscaping. Brad was particularly impressed with the attention to detail, even down to the selection of plants. The result was a space that felt like a private resort in their own backyard. While the pool is undoubtedly the centerpiece, the entire project has allowed the Scott family to embrace outdoor living fully. Brad highlighted, “We enjoy it – sitting out on our patio, barbecuing, sitting by the fire pit with friends. People feel like they’re at a resort when they come over.” Brad shared valuable advice for those considering a similar transformation: “Know what you like and don’t like, trust the experts, and take the time to make the right decisions for you. Life is short; do it as soon as possible. It’s great to watch the kids and family enjoying the place. The Scotts’ journey serves as a testament to the power of envisioning a dream and entrusting it to skilled professionals. Their Willowsford oasis stands as a testament to their dedication to creating a home where memories are made and cherished for years to come. We would love to feature your living space, either indoor or outdoor! Email billie.rose@strollmag.com!

Long before they came to NoVA, Bharath and Anjani Reddy had seen quite a bit of the world, and they have traveled to many more places since then. After seven years in the Grange, they are almost empty nesters— daughter Arya, 19, is a sophomore in pre-medical studies in Tampa, Florida. Bharath and Anjani both grew up in India and immigrated to the U.S. in 1994 to complete their master’s degrees at Jackson State University. “We were both very fortunate to realize the American Dream,” Bharath said. “We worked our way through [grad school] and became U.S. citizens in the early 2000s. We moved around the country a bit - originally to Mississippi, New Jersey and then later to San Antonio, Texas. For a brief period, we relocated back to India, eventually coming back and settling down in NoVA.” Stroll Willowsford

Anjani has traveled extensively to Nepal and Tibet and chronicled some of her trips on YouTube. “We have a passion for the Himalayas,” Bharath said. “We made another trip this summer to Mt. Kailash, which has a special place in several eastern religions, including Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, and Bon.” Other trips have taken them to Spain, Tanzania, Turkey and Alaska. They have also traveled extensively throughout Asia, including a recent memorable trip to southeast Asia as a family. Closer to home, the Reddy’s like walking the Willowsford trails, something Arya particularly enjoyed before heading to college. “We have discovered new flora, and our encounters with the bunnies, deer, and birds are something we look forward to,” Anjani said. Both Reddy’s work in the IT industry. Bharath is a cyber security architect for Fannie Mae and Anjani works as an AWS infrastructure architect. “We both are attached to our line of work,” Bharath said, “but we are also interested in volunteering in areas where we can be helpful. Our family motto is ‘Life is short – help in any way you can!’ We would like the community to know that we are friendly, and like to give back, so if anyone needs help with IT projects for local charities, we would be happy to assist!”

WILLOWSFORD WAVES

SWIMSPIRATION: Neighborhood Swim Team is two times the fun! THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY SOUTH RIDING PEDIATRICS

WILLOWSFORD WAVES NORTH by Resident and Junior Writer Kiaan Saraiya

Did you know about our community’s swim team? If not; well let me introduce you to our very own “The Willowsford Waves” we are the amazing swim team that competes for our community in the ODSL (Old Dominion Swim League). I swim for the Willowsford Waves North, and I have been on the team for the past two years. It has been an amazing experience and I am always looking forward to the next seasons to come. I have made many friends on the team making each season more fun. The North team for the Waves had an amazing season this year with a 8-0 streak and a well-deserved victory during the all-star meet. But the man behind all of this win is Eric Bateman, our awesome coach. Coach Eric has been with us for our journey to victory and has helped all of our swimmers along the way. We owe a ton of our credit to that man for the amount of hard work he puts into our team. Here are a few all-star swimmers from the Waves who have shared their thoughts about our awesome team: Lena Nolton: Lena is a great breaststroke swimmer and loves the Willowsford Waves’ fun activities that take place during the season. Lena joined the Waves when she was a Mini Wave at age five, and now swims for the 11-12 girls. She made all-stars for her absolute favorite stroke, 50 meter breaststroke, for the first time in her life. During the year she swims for Nation’s Capital Swim Club (NCAP) and then swims for the Waves during the summer. In her opinion, she didn’t feel a lot of pressure, nor did she feel tension, but the 72

October 2023

desire for victory was high. She also believes the meet was very tough since she was competing against the best in the county. She is elated that the Waves won the all-star meet and was proud to help claim the victory. Ronan Lach: Ronan is a kind, and funny guy who is great at every stroke. He enjoys the loving and fun community the Willowsford Waves create. Ronan joined the Waves in 2018 and has stayed on the team ever since. When I joined the Waves in 2022 he welcomed me to the team and I became best friends with him. He swims for the 11-12 boys and is a great swimmer! He’s made all-stars all four years he has been on the Waves. This year he made all-stars for the 50 meter butterfly. Despite older competitors, Ronan worked hard throughout the season and crushed his all-star race! He also swims NCAP and is moving up to the Silver 1 rank, which is one of the best ranks for his age. Ronan didn’t have any pressure this year, however he thought the meet was extremely difficult. Overall, he thought the all-star meet was fun because he could watch all of his friends swim. He felt excited and happy that our team had a winning streak and won the all-star meet. Hayden Lamb: Hayden joined the Willowsford Waves seven years ago. He is now swimming for the 11-12 boys and is a great at swimming breastroke. Hayden has made all-stars three times previous to this year. And is currently the top 10 in his age group. This year Hayden was diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), which is an autonomic disorder that causes him to feel dizzy all the time and makes his blood pressure and

heart rate not regulate. He was told he would never be able to compete in swimming again. Despite the discouragement, Hayden refused to believe he would have to give up swimming. So he proved everyone wrong. He swam 50 meter breaststroke in the last 2 meets and made the all-star time. It was very difficult for him, but he needed to prove to himself he could do it and he did. He is very proud of that. POTS is a chronic illness, and it’s hard for Hayden to swim, but he won’t be giving it up. Hayden loves having his friends on the swim team with him to share his victories with. Hayden thought that the all-star meet was fun but busy. There were lots of teams and swimmers, but everyone was supportive and had a great time. He felt pressure finishing the race since POTS made him feel dizzy and tired. Hayden feels great that they won all-stars as well as an 8-0 winning streak. He believes we are the best team, which we are. Hayden also swims for NCAP and loves it. Overall, Hayden is a great swimmer with a true spirit! Zara Lach: Zara is a great overall swimmer and has made all-stars two times before. She swims for the 9-10 girls and loves the delicious donuts every Friday practice or Saturday morning meets. This season she made all-stars for 50 meter backstroke, 25 meter butterfly, and 100 meter I.M! She is currently in the top 10 in her age group. On top of all that Zara also broke a 7-8 girls record for the Waves. In her opinion, the meet wasn’t tough and the stress and tension were low. She raced really well and placed really well. She enjoyed the all-star meet as well as ecstatic that the team was undefeated this season. Zara is looking forward to the next seasons for swimming and will do just as well in all of them as she did in this one. Anjelo Medina: Anjelo is a fun, sweet person who found his passion for swimming when he joined the Waves. He has been on the Waves since he was eight years old and is now in the 11-12 boys. Anjelo enjoys competing and racing during the swim season. He’s previously made all-stars three times when he was 9, 10, and 11 years old. He started his swim journey on the Waves, then did the Torpedos year-round, and switched to NCAP this summer. He made all-stars for 50 meter freestyle, 50 meter butterfly, 50 meter backstroke, and 100 meter I.M. However, since you can only swim a maximum of three strokes, Anjelo decided to swim everything besides freestyle. He thought that there was tons of pressure during the meet, and Anjelo pushed himself to top three, but sadly didn’t make it. Fortunately, he did really well in his races; he placed top 10 in the meet. He thought the meet was very tough but he swam really well. Anjelo also earned the Coches choice award for his sportsmanship and teamwork during the award ceremony at the end-of-season banquet. Overall, Anjelo was very happy that the team won all-stars, and a 8-0 winning streak, and is looking forward to continuing his passion for swimming.

WILLOWSFORD WAVES SOUTH by Resident and Junior Writer Amelia Macchiarolo

Meet the Willowsford Waves. Currently, there are two teams, a North team and a South team. Two years ago, they were one big team, then they split, like a banana. Being on the swim team is good for you mentally and physically. Do you like waking up early? Probably not, but it’s worth it. There is practice or a swim meet most days of the week during the season, except on Sundays. The first few days of the summer can be cold, but on Fridays you get donuts! The team competes in swim meets that are usually on Wednesdays and Saturdays. If you win your heat, you earn a ribbon and, at each meet, first through sixth place for each event earns a ribbon too. Sometimes there is an ice cream truck at the meet! At the end of the season, there are divisional and all-star meets where you can earn medals (if you stay long enough, you may even get your medals early)! This year, for Waves South, the coach awarded a swimmer of the week for each age group on Fridays. There is a registration fee to join the team. Did I forget to mention the kindness of the team? If you lose something at the meet, they’ll post a picture of the item and post it on the website to find the owner. If you forgot to bring something, a teammate will share it with you. The team supports each other by cheering each other on during the different events and is there to pick you up if you are feeling down about your race. There are also some really cool team events like going to the movies, ice skating, or the ropes course together. If you like waking up in the morning, (sometimes) cold water, and donut Fridays, then you’ll like the swim team. Even if you don’t, it’s still worth it!

’Willowsford waves is a time where athletics and family join. It is a place where you can be a part of the team no matter your skill level. They make you feel welcome and encouraged to keep trying. Even through the early practices. Like they say, “life’s a wave, catch it!” ‘ - HANNA STOLLE

“I liked being with my friends, competing with them, and getting medals. My favorite part was racing and donut days.” - ADDISON BLAINE

“Everyone was really nice and encouraging even if you weren’t the fastest. My favorite was getting to see my friends a lot over the summer. Also, the Friday donuts!” - PAISLEY GAITHER Do you have a “Healthy Living” story or event you would for us to feature? Please email billie.rose@strollmag.com!

or our August meeting, the Junior Writer team got to try some tasty treats at Rebel Taco! The restaurant had a special space waiting for the writers when everyone arrived. We had the opportunity to tastetest some popular items from the menu, including guacamole and queso, elote, flautas, Taki sticks, nachos, tacos and quesadillas in assorted flavors, and even some churros for dessert! business and brainstormed ideas for new articles all while snacking on these tasty dishes. Let’s just say it was good food for thought over at this delicious restaurant. Rebel Taco was a recent addition to the Brambleton Town Center near the end of 2022, and has since grown in popularity thanks to its great food, indoor and outdoor bar, and fun events. You can taste all the great food on the menu by visiting Rebel

Taco or by grabbing some great family pack options, along with other items to-go for home dining! Ebone and Jeff Granger are part-owners of Rebel Taco, as well as owners of insurance company Granger Financial, and residents of Willowsford in the Grange. The Grangers attended the meeting to introduce their food and share some stories about the restaurant. Ebone explained, “Rebel sits in the heart of Brambleton Town Center, bringing the

community together with good vibes and a lively atmosphere. It is a place to bring the whole family for a fun night out, to catch a game at the bar with old friends or to simply lounge out on the patio while enjoying the fresh air! What I love most about Rebel is that it represents our community and is comprised of local families.” Thank you, Grangers and Rebel Taco for making our meeting the best Taco Tuesday ever!

“What I love most about Rebel is that it represents our community and is comprised of local families.”

his summer movie theaters sold out because of the sensational new Barbie movie! When me, my mom, and sister went to see it, it was thrilling. On the day that it premiered hundreds of people poured into theaters dressed head to toe in pink! And to honor the very pink occasion theaters had pink sunglasses and even strawberry-chocolate pink popcorn! The introduction to the movie was amazing. It included a huge Barbie (Margot Robbie) wearing a black and white swimsuit, just like the original Barbie. I knew that it would be a fantastic movie from the very beginning, and it certainly met my expectations. I loved the dream houses and Weird Barbie’s house because they looked just like the real Barbie dream houses. Margot Robbie was an amazing Barbie and I loved how funny Ryan Gosling was as Ken. All the hard work the creators did to make this movie so great definitely paid off. Seeing all the different versions of Barbie and Ken was really cool. My favorite character was Alan because he was nice to everyone even if they were rude to him, and in the end he helped the Barbies for the greater good. This action-packed movie was emotional, funny, and all-around spectacular! I would recommend it to anyone.
