SPRING INTO ACTION

As the deep freeze begins to melt away, it’s time to prepare your home for spring. Here are some steps you can take now that may help avoid costly maintenance repairs later on:

• Inspect the roof and gutters for damage; it’s likely taken a beating all season. Then be sure to clear gutters of debris as clogs can lead to water damage.

• Clean and repair driveways, fences, decks and patios. Spray away salt, sand and de-icers, then fill any cracks, holes or gaps.

• Examine your windows, doors and seals for any damage. Sealants can crack in extreme cold, leading to water damage and drafts.

• Inspect the paint on the outside of your home. Make any necessary paint repairs or try a fresh look — but be sure to submit an application for any paint color changes!

• Examine your chimney. If needed, hire a chimney sweep to check the exterior for damage and clean the flue.

• Prepare lawn equipment. Make sure your lawn mower and weed whacker are clean, gassed up and ready for the first spring cut.

• Last but not least — pull out your springtime clothes, open up the windows and turn on the music!

EAT LOCAL, EAT IN SEASON

One of the advantages of being part of the Willowsford Community is that Willowsford Farm makes eating local and eating in season easy. Eating local is the practice of consuming food that is grown or produced in the same area where it is consumed. Eating local can have several benefits, including supporting local farmers and businesses, reducing the environmental impact of transportation, and ensuring that the food is fresher and of higher quality.

Eating in season is also advantageous as you and your family can eat fruits and vegetables grown and harvested during their natural growing season. This can benefit both the environment and your health. By eating in season you can enjoy produce that is fresher, more flavorful, and more

nutritious, as fruits and vegetables that are allowed to ripen fully on the vine will have more vitamins and minerals.

An easy way to eat local and eat in season is to become part of the Farm-ily with the Farmer’s Choice CSA Share program to taste-test new vegetables and recipes that can become some of your family’s favorites. As part of the Farm-ily you can eat local and in season, and also increase your sense of community and connection by engaging with the Farm Team, our CSA Volunteers, and other Willowsford neighbors.

HONORING RESIDENT KARYN MORELAND

There’s a good chance you’ve spotted her on the trails, caught up with her at the pool or chatted with her at a Willowsford event. No matter the occasion, one thing is certain: this month’s Resident Non Sibi Honoree Karyn Moreland is invested in our community, neighbors and conservation!

Karyn and her husband, Ken, moved to the Greens five years ago and have family in the Grove and Grant villages. She is a proud grandmother of five beautiful granddaughters, two of which reside in the Grove. With a degree in civil engineering from Notre Dame, Karyn spent 30 years of dedicated public service with Fairfax County. Now retired, she focuses on volunteering, hiking and biking the trails of Willowsford and beyond!

Her love of nature is evident in the way she spends her time. Karyn is currently the treasurer for the Willowsford Conservancy board of directors and serves on the Willowsford Covenance Committee. She volunteers at the

Willowsford Community Bonfire Campovers each year, along with the Holiday Tree Trimming at the Boat House, Earth Day events and other conservation efforts around the neighborhood.

Her altruism and approachability make her a friend and neighbor whom everyone appreciates. Says her husband, Ken, “It’s not just that Karyn is always thinking of others first. She’s willing to jump in and help out whenever she can, and does it with a positive attitude.”

A perfect example of Karyn’s commitment to helping others occurred last summer when one of her neighbors accidentally lost their cell phone at Busch Gardens amusement park. Knowing that Karyn was going to be at the park, they notified her of their dilemma. Karyn spent countless hours over three days and multiple trips to Guest Services to personally secure the cell phone and return it to her neighbor!

Thank you, Karyn, for your spirit of generosity and consideration for our community!

24 March 2023 RESIDENT NON SIBI

“Karyn Moreland is definitely an asset to the community. She is an active member of the Willowsford Covenants Committee and the Conservancy. Her love for walking, biking and hiking daily throughout the trails in the neighborhood make her a perfect fit for her role in the Conservancy. This is just one example of her volunteering.

“She also is involved in coaching her grandchildren’s sports team. Karyn and I have been hosts of one of the social committee events together. She is a joy to work with and is very generous with her time. It is a pleasure to know and be friends with her. I would like to recommend Karyn as an outstanding resident for her selflessness and dedication to helping make Willowsford a better place to live.”

“... Fewer personify the true essence of neighborly than Karyn Moreland! Greeting every neighbor in the Willowsford Community by name with a gracious smile is one of the many characteristics that we’ve come to love and appreciate. Preserving the aesthetic of the community as a volunteer Covenants Committee member, serving as the treasurer of the Willowsford Conservancy and leading National Earth Day Community Cleanup efforts are just a few of the other notables about this community steward we call neighbor! We are fortunate to call Karyn our neighbor by proximity, but her reach is evident throughout all four Willowsford villages.”

A JUICY IDEA FOR 2023

This month for “Healthy Living,” we are interviewing Nathan and Emily Vooys of the Grove on their recent Greenheart Juice cleanse. Greenheart is a juicery offering cold-pressed juices, healthy snacks and salads with locations in downtown Aldie, Leesburg and Vienna. They offer free delivery to all Willowsford neighborhoods for purchases totaling $40 or more. They give their local communities a daily dose of wellness by providing the most delicious, nutrientdense products nature has to offer. This is how our interview went.

Q: What is a cleanse?

A: A way to remove toxins from your body by fasting or drinking only juices or similar beverages.

Q: How did you know of a Greenheart cleanse?

A: We passed the store in Aldie and a friend had done a cleanse with them and had great things to say about it.

Q: Why do you believe in a healthy lifestyle?

A: We are always looking for ways to prioritize our health. While we had never done a cleanse before, the program that Greenheart offered seemed easy and was a low investment.

Q: What juices arrived in the cleanse?

A: Six juices arrived for the one-day cleanse: MJ, Liquid Gold, The Rooster, Naked Roots, MJ and ending with Cashew Chai.

Q: Do you work out? What do you do to stay fit?

A: We ride our Peloton regularly and I (Emily) enjoy running. We also try to take one to two long walks with our dog on the weekend.

Q: Would you recommend a cleanse to a friend or family member?

A: Yes, both my husband and I feel that the next day after the cleanse we had so much energy! It’s also very convenient.

Q: What times did you drink your juices?

A: Every two hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Q: Is there any information or advice you would like to share about how you live a healthy lifestyle?

A: We try to make small adjustments to our lifestyle to be healthier. We know that major changes done too quickly probably won’t be sustainable. We aren’t too hard on ourselves if something doesn’t work for us.

Meet the AHMED FAMILY!

Sofia, Lyla, Nora, Aria, Olivia--say it quickly three times and you can see why the parents of this lively quintet of daughters chose ‘chaotic’ as one of the words (the others are ‘loving’ and ‘affable’) that describes their family. Fortunately, the Ahmeds still have a few years of blissful reprieve until the three oldest reach their teens, when the competition for bathrooms, mirrors, clothes, and electrical outlets will reach a whole new level.

Right now, this crew of little sisters is busy discovering all the fun things that Willowsford offers. They all agree that the Fourth of July celebrations, especially the fireworks, are among the coolest things about living here. The older three girls are regulars at the neighborhood pool, and a couple of them have experienced the popular Camp Willowsford. Sofia especially appreciates the fact that Santa makes a special trip out here each year.

Sofia, 8, and Lyla, 7, both play piano, and along with their friends, burn off a lot of energy bicycling on the Willowsford streets and trails. Sofia also loves drawing and playing with her BFF Riley. Her parents describe her as a sweet child who is nurturing not just toward her sisters, but the household’s pet menagerie, which includes Rami, a Goldendoodle, Sam the cat, Snowball and Selene the hamsters, and a solitary fish named Blueberry.

Lyla plays guitar in addition to piano and is a big Taylor Swift fan. An aficionado of team-oriented sports, she currently enjoys playing soccer. “Lyla has a great sense of humor, and we love laughing at her jokes,” says her mom. “She looks forward to Friday movie nights with the family and is learning to cook.” Lyla describes her family as “funny, lovable, and cool.”

Nora is five and is already proving that she’ll never be the kind of middle child who gets overshadowed by her siblings. “She’s very extroverted, charismatic, and high energy,” says

her mom. “She doesn’t shy away from asking questions. But she also has a sweet side and a caring approach to her little sisters and younger kids.” And while all the Ahmed girls are in gymnastics at G-Force Academy, Nora has the extreme athleticism and flexibility that make her a natural for the sport. Not surprisingly, she also loves music and dancing.

The youngest members of the family are twins Aria and Olivia. At two-and-a-half, their pastimes include Barbies, painting, and motoring down the street in their toy car. They’ve discovered the splash pad and playgrounds, which are now their favorite Willowsford destinations. Olivia is very confident, sweet, and loves to laugh. Aria is just as active but more introverted.

Mom and Dad, better known outside the family as Jenn and Riz, met while both were working at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC, and bonded over their mutual interest in caring for people with digestive disorders.

Jenn, who grew up in Hamburg, NY, and received her BS and MS degrees in Dietetics from D’Youville University in Buffalo, is a Registered Dietitian (RD) and a passionate Buffalo Bills fan. She’s always had a love for running, swimming, and generally staying active, so she was attracted to sports nutrition. Since cancer runs in her extended family, she also felt driven to help others through a healthcare career, so combining these passions led her to become a Dietitian.

Last year, she opened her own private practice, Feeding 5 Nutrition, LLC (feeding5nutrition.com). “After being a stay-athome mom for so many years, I’m thrilled to be back at work doing what I love!” she said. In the early years of her career, Jenn worked in hospital settings, so she’s excited to extend her services to patients in the community. “There are so many kids and adults that struggle with obesity, uncontrolled diabetes, and irritable bowel syndrome, and there aren’t enough dietitians to assist them,” she explained. “My practice also specializes in

helping cancer patients with enteral feeding support (tube feeds). I also care for those with Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, fatty liver disease, GERD, and design specialty diets for those with congestive heart failure and chronic kidney disease.”

Riz is a gastroenterologist at Gastroenterology Associates, PC (https://www.doctorgi.com), a 10-physician practice with office locations in Gainesville, Manassas, and Warrenton. “We have three outpatient clinics and two Endoscopy centers to serve patients from throughout northern Virginia,” he said. “I also see patients at UVA Haymarket Medical Center and UVA Prince William Medical Center.” In addition to upper endoscopy and colonoscopy procedures, the practice specializes in a variety of gastrointestinal disorders, including colon cancer prevention, irritable bowel syndrome, GERD, gastrointestinal bleeding, hepatitis, and other liver disorders, gallstones, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis.

Born in Canberra, Australia, Riz has spent most of his life in Virginia. His family came to the U.S. and settled in Springfield, where his parents worked for the federal government. Riz has been attracted to the sciences since grade school. “I loved biology in high school and anatomy and physiology in college,” he said. Originally from Bangladesh, Riz would spend his summers there visiting his grandparents and cousins. He would volunteer at the local hospital in Dhaka and perform charity service projects with impoverished youth. Combining this experience with his love for sciences inspired Riz to eventually choose a career in medicine, where he could directly impact the lives of others.

After graduating from Old Dominion University, Riz completed medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical Center in Norfolk and a residency in internal medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. This was followed by a fellowship in gastroenterology at Wake Forest. He specialized in gastroenterology because of a strong interest in digestive pathology, especially gastrointestinal autoimmune diseases like Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, which affect people of all ages in all parts of the world. Similarly, he’s fascinated by cancer research, which led to his interest in colon cancer prevention.

Jenn and Riz moved to their home in the Grant in 2020. “We always felt drawn to Willowsford because of its bountiful amenities, young children, beautiful homes, and great school system,” Jenn said. “We moved from South Riding in hopes of meeting new friends, but ironically, the world shut down due to the pandemic the week after we moved in!” Since then, they’ve made up for lost time and

vote for the Lodge swimming pool, the Supper Club, and the food delivery from the farm as the top three amenities at Willowsford. Holidays with family are a longstanding tradition for the Ahmeds. “We celebrate Eid with Riz’s family and Christmas with my family, “ Jenn said. Riz’s parents and two younger brothers, both of whom followed him into medicine, also live nearby with young children. Weekends are often spent getting the brothers and kids together to enjoy great food, football, and movies. And of course, the Willowsford Halloween and Christmas festivities are not to be missed.

Each year, the family travels to the Outer Banks for time at the beach, but their most memorable vacation has been an unexpected road trip to Disney World. “We were supposed to fly down to [Florida] for spring break last year, but unfortunately our flights got canceled,” Riz said. “So we packed up the car and drove straight to Orlando non-stop through the rainy night, arriving there in 14 hours. Our kids still talk about that road trip being one of their best memories.”

We love Goose Creet Vet. Dr. Fortier takes the time to know each of her animal patients and their families which is a gift for everyone. The staff is always welcoming and friendly, the office is always clean. My dogs love going to Goose Creek and we are so happy to have found them!”

Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience

The Wizarding World sets up shop locally!

It was a dark and mystical early winter night at Morven Park in Leesburg, VA. There was something about the fog in the treetops that created suspense. Nobody knew what to expect as we walked down the gravel trail towards the entrance to the Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience.

When we walked into the experience, we were surrounded by photo opportunities and lots of booths selling magical snacks, such as chocolate frog brownies, Nimbus 2000 sugar cookies and spider web doughnuts. After taking many pictures, we met a man with a magical item called a deluminator who welcomed us, lit up the path and sent us on our way. When you start on the trail, you are surrounded by dark and misty trees, which really help set the scene and give a magical feel to the whole thing.

After a little walking and lots of owl sightings, we found ourselves waiting in a line to see a magical creature named Buckbeak. Buckbeak is a hippogriff, which is a creature similar to a griffin … but not quite. Instead of having

the head of an eagle and the body of a lion, he has the head of an eagle and the body of a winged horse. After bowing to Buckbeak, we continued our journey. As we were walking, we saw many guests wearing Harry Potter

apparel. We also saw many creatures from the books and movies, such as Nifflers and a giant named Grawp. There were multiple places where guests got to use a wand to summon a Patronus and cast light spells. About halfway through, we stopped at Hogsmeade Village, where you could try butterbeer and other original British sweet and savory foods.

One of the most adrenalin-pumping parts was Aragog’s lair. After walking into the area and waking the giant spider, many smaller spiders hanging from the treetops dropped down on wires a few inches above our heads. After exiting the lair, we walked down a trail with more magical creatures, such as Pygmy Puffs, Cornish Pixies, fairies and more Nifflers. As we came to the end of the experience, we found an apparel/gift shop. The shop had lots of clothes and plushies, and many more cool souvenirs.

Overall, it was an amazing experience, and if you’re a Harry Potter fan or want to know more about the magical world, you should definitely go and see it for yourself!

INTERIOR DECORATOR CREATES BEAUTIFUL SPACES FOR CLIENTS.

Have you found the perfect home but it’s missing that “wow” factor you’ve always dreamed of? If yes, you’re likely in need of an interior decorator.

This is the very reason why Sarah McCarty started an interior decorating business. “I’ve realized over the years that many people find room planning, researching and curating home decor overwhelming, but I love every minute of it,” she exclaimed. Starting a business to share her passion just made sense. “I started this business because I had the vision to help people create great designs without the effort of picking out the pieces themselves.”

Sarah grew up mostly in Northern Virginia and was surrounded by creativity, which she attributes to where she is today. “My dad is a professional impressionist artist. There was always a lot of color, pattern and art in every room of our home. Fast forward to my own home, and you’ll still find lots of color, pattern and art flanking every wall. From my hand-stenciled powder room to my hand-spongepainted walls throughout, every room tells a story.”

Sarah resides in the Willowsford community and loves to work with her neighbors. The mom, wife and dog owner to Macs lives in the Grove and says she chose her home for its Southern vibe. “My husband and I were married in Charleston, SC, and go back often,” she shared.

Modern coastal is her home style of choice, but Sarah, a certified interior decorator (CID), loves all home styles, from modern contemporary to Hollywood glam. She understands the value of finding what’s ideal for each client. Sarah says a great interior decorator has “creativity and attention to detail and loves to help realize her client’s vision.” Sarah creates beautiful, inspiring spaces for clients. “Great home design should be fulfilling,” explains Sarah. “It should make you feel good every time you enter a room.” One of the ways Sarah achieves this for

her clients is by having a clear understanding of their desires. She can deliver a “Pinterest-worthy” home but knows how to make it functional and family-friendly. “Having three kids and a Labrador retriever, I know what home furnishings will work best in busy and elegant households,” says Sarah.

In a multi-step process, Sarah initially consults with clients to understand their style and room goals. “In the consultation, I learn about your wants and needs, get the dimensions needed and see your current space,” she says, adding it’s either done in-person or virtually through photos and videos. “I then review my notes, photos and current design trends and dream up how best to transform your space,” she added. “I tailor my search for each client. Actively researching sources with different styles, I’m able to build out the product listing and complete the design, an iterative process where the client provides input on early design concepts.”

Sarah builds out the e-design using a software program and finalizes the product sourcing. She presents the final design to the client. “The final design package includes everything my clients need to transform their space: the e-design, the product listing for every item included in the design (with clickable shopping links) and my product placement guide.”

One of the best parts of her job is working with Willowsford families. “I love working with the families in Willowsford because there’s something special about creating that dream space for a member of my own community,” she says. “The connections I’ve made with my clients here in Willowsford have made the projects even more meaningful to me.”

When Sarah is not working on a client’s project, she’s often working on a project in her own home. “I’ve slowly been putting my touch on every square inch. Pretty soon, I’ll be out of rooms!” Sarah jokes. Other pastime activities she enjoys include family walks through the community with Macs, riding the Peloton and taking family trips to the lake and beach. “I could spend the whole day on a paddleboard,” she says.

If you see Sarah (and Macs) out and about, be sure to say hello. And if you have a room that doesn’t bring feelings of joy, schedule a consult with Sarah. Need a little more convincing to work with a professional? Check out Sarah’s four reasons for hiring a professional below!

FOUR REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD HIRE AN INTERIOR DECORATOR

You’ve been imagining a room transformation for months. You’ve created a Pinterest board full of décor ideas, and you’re finally ready to make it happen. But which idea do you go with? Which colors and patterns should you choose? How much can you spend? Do you have the time to do it?

Interior decorating can be overwhelming; there’s no denying that. Deciding what direction you want to go in, choosing your color scheme and then sourcing all of the products is a massive undertaking. But what if I told you it doesn’t have to be? Here are the top four reasons why you would benefit from hiring a professional (like me!):

1. SAVE TIME

Planning a room design or refresh is time-consuming. Not only do you have to come up with the design, but you must source all the products while making sure they will fit your space. An interior decorator already knows what needs to be done and where to find the products needed to achieve that dream space.

2. SAVE MONEY

Have you ever bought something for your home only to realize that you don’t love it, so you buy something to replace it, and then realize you don’t love that either? You wind up spending more money than planned

and you’re still not happy with the results. An Interior Decorator can help you avoid these unnecessary costs. They know exactly where to find that perfect piece for your home — on the first try!

3. VISION

Even if you can’t articulate your style and needs, an interior decorator is skilled at eliciting your room goals to create your dream space. The decorator will consider all the elements of the room — furniture, rugs, window treatments, wallpaper, decorative items, pillows, lighting, etc. — and will make sure even the smallest details work together to give your space a cohesive feel.

4. THE “WOW” FACTOR

One of the best reasons to hire a great interior decorator is for that “wow” factor they will bring to your space. It’s that moment you step inside a designed home and see the statement wallpaper, the show-stopping chandelier and the beautifully tailored throw pillows on the sofa — and you think to yourself, “WOW!” That feeling can be yours in your own home with the right interior decorator.

Whether you’re looking for a singleroom refresh or a multi-room design, hiring the services of an interior decorator will get you the superior results you desire without the hassle of doing it yourself.

BEFORE AFTER

Holiday Masquerade is a Smashing Success!

The Holiday Masquerade Ball started as a crazy idea for a charity event inspired by our youngest daughter, Penny, who happens to have Down syndrome. Because of everyone that helped to create the evening, it was incredibly successful and amazingly fun!

The ball took place at the Sycamore House on Dec. 17, from 6 to 10 p.m. Guests had the opportunity to enjoy dinner, dancing and bidding on more than 90 silent auction items provided by generous donors.

The sit-down dinner included wild mushroom phyllo cups, beef tenderloin crostini and mini crabcakes as appetizers, followed by a roasted carrot soup, farm greens salad and a choice of short rib, braised chicken breast or salmon for the main course, all prepared by Willowsford Chef Emily Worth. The dessert was deliciously prepared and donated in its entirety by Chantel’s Bakery in Sterling.

In addition to bringing awareness about Down syndrome and the National Down Syndrome Society, we had a very special guest at the event, highlighting the abilities of individuals with Down syndrome. Jonathan S. opened up the dance floor to the tunes of “Backstreet’s Back” with his dance instructor, April, from Dance King Studios in Leesburg. A big thank you to Dance King Studios for making this possible!

This event was hosted by Willowsford Cares, our community’s service club and registered nonprofit, founded by Mark and Becky Danzebaker. Find more information about future events or coordinate a fundraising event by visiting the website at https://info871376.wixsite.com/willowsfordcares or on Facebook: www.facebook.com/willowsfordcaresdonations.

We were able to raise more than $25,000 for the National Down Syndrome Society, the leading human rights organization for all individuals with Down syndrome! Present at the event were NDSS representatives Jessica K., senior manager of education programs, and Margot R., senior director of health and wellness.

Thank you to the sponsors, residents and supporters that helped make this event a success! We far exceeded every imagined goal, and this is a great example of pure Willowsford — everyone coming together to help!

Next Level Design

The designer duo Kacy Fernstrom and Danielle Banks of haven&dwell interiors had a unique vision for this Willowsford home. Homeowners Amanda and Nate Gallen trusted the interior designers to take their new build to new heights.

The dining room was the perfect opportunity to create a head-to-toe mood. First, the walls and ceiling were molded out; then, the entire room was painted black. The Lucite and black sconces and crystal chandelier add just the right amount of light. We brought in a horn and bone inlay round mirror as the focal point. Now Amanda and Nate can entertain in style!

In the living room, we immediately went to work creating a concept that would hide the bulkhead and make the fireplace wall a focal point. The idea to build custom arched cabinetry with black insets would take this family room to the next level. We designed the fireplace to have a larger modern facade with a quartz surround. We added parallel sofas and swivel chairs to give the homeowners plenty of seating. The chandelier is unexpected and complements the room perfectly. Now this fun, young couple can enjoy a beautiful and comfortable space for years to come.

A WINTER NIGHT TO REMEMBER:

First Annual Winter Wonderland Gala at Envi Aesthetics

It was a festive celebration at the resident-owned Envi Aesthetics office in Aldie on Thursday, Dec. 1, for the start of the holiday season. The event, which was held from 5 to 8 p.m., featured holiday-inspired cocktails by Bartique, a charcuterie table by BeGrazeful, macaroons by Pure Love Macaron, cookies by 3C Delights and gorgeous holiday decor. There were door prizes, swag bags and raffles, and many Willowsford residents were in attendance.

“It was such a joy attending the Envi Aesthetics’ Winter Wonderland Gala. Not only was it the perfect way to kick off the holiday season, but it was also fun to see so many gorgeous and familiar faces. The stunning new office space was beautifully decorated, the food and craft cocktails were festive and delicious, and the generous swag bags were packed full of goodies. As a longtime client of Jennifer’s, I am not surprised that the Winter Wonderland event was nothing short of perfection!” said resident Carol Maresca.

Attention to detail was the key to success for Envi owner and Willowsford resident Jennifer Weiner, FNP-C. Guests donned white cocktail attire, matching the festive decor, nibbles and gifts. In addition to mingling and enjoying samples, attendees had so much fun learning new and innovative cosmetic treatments. Raffles included lip and cheek filler, Botox, chemical peels, ZO Skin Care and even a Louis Vuitton makeup bag. Additionally, event specials were offered, such as 30% off ZO products and free money when you pre-purchased a procedure package.

“I’m so grateful for the outpouring of support I’ve received from the residents of Willowsford. The evening was one to remember (even if we ran out of alcohol, and not because we didn’t have enough) with friends who have become patients and patients who have become friends! This event was one of many, and Envi will continue to bring women together to support one another, without judgment, while celebrating our individual beauty both inside and out!” said Jennifer.

Junior Writers Plan, Play and Party!

The hardworking kid correspondents of Stroll Willowsford got together for their January Junior Writers’ meeting at the Willowsford Boat House on Willow Lake in early January. To practice their interviewing skills, everyone played a round of “Get To Know You” Bingo as an icebreaker. After discussing new ideas and brainstorming for upcoming articles, they had a belated holiday celebration, starting with an ornament swap! Players could pick an ornament to unwrap or steal from another player, but everyone

ended up with a unique new holiday ornament that they loved. Next, everyone did a build-a-snowman doughnut challenge! Each person was given three mini powdered doughnuts to design a snowman and decorate with candy. The meeting concluded with holiday gifts of a Stroll notebook and pack and a Stroll Junior Writer Press Pass! It was an excellent start to an exciting new year with the team.

Our Junior Writers kicked off 2023 with a Stroll New Year's Eve swag bag delivery! Val Signorelli of 3C Delights created delicious custom cookies for everyone to enjoy with their sparkling cider. Here's to another year of great features and fun adventures!

Big thanks to 3C Delights for the delicious treats: https://linktr. ee/3cdelights.

Starstruck By The Neighborhood Astronaut!

Did you know that an astronaut lives in our neighborhood?

Rick Mastracchio worked for NASA as an astronaut for 20 years! Not all astronauts get to leave our atmosphere, but Rick has made the journey four times, for a total of 228 days in space! What is it really like? Read on to find out!

Rick was always interested in math and science and went to school to be an engineer. His work led him to move to Houston, Texas, and eventually join NASA. After becoming an astronaut candidate, Rick flew on the Space Shuttle Atlantis, the Space Shuttle Endeavor, the Space Shuttle

Discovery and the Soyuz Rocket. All space crafts docked at the International Space Station (ISS). (Did you know that the ISS orbits the Earth about 16 times a day? Sometimes, it is visible in the night sky!)

Rick said, “Traveling in space is a blast! It’s just like other kinds of trips that have different parts to them. At the start, riding the rocket during the launch is a lot of fun. It’s loud, dynamic; there’s a lot of vibration and movement. Once in space, you’re floating! You can fly like Superman and lift thousands of pounds with no problem. You can see the beauty of the Earth below you, and there’s lots of new things to see and experience while you’re up there.”

His favorite part of being in space was doing spacewalks. He did nine of them! That’s when you put on the big, bulky space suit and go outside of the ISS into space. He says that the ISS always needs updates and repairs, and it’s up to the astronauts that live there to be like construction workers to keep everything running. “It’s challenging and exciting!” he said.

In addition to spacewalks, Rick said one of the best things about being an astronaut is friendship with crew mates. “It’s

very much like being on a sports team. You spend a lot of time together and really get to know one another!”

Rick’s advice to anybody interested in working in space is to read! “There are so many space crafts — read and learn about them. Read up on airplanes and planets. Learn about what NASA is doing to get people to live on the moon! There are so many wonders to uncover.” He said that math and science are important too, but there’s also lots of other roles that help with space exploration and ways to be involved.

Even though he retired as an astronaut, Rick is still watching the stars with his current job at Northrop Grumman, building space crafts that deliver food, clothing and equipment to the ISS. (The SS Sally Ride just launched in November from nearby Chincoteague!) He’s also on a team that’s working on

+ Maltese + Poodle = Adorable Morkiepoo!

Meet Coco, a fun-loving Morkiepoo that is a mix between a Yorkie, Maltese and poodle. Besides taking long walks, Coco loves napping and playing with his favorite toy, a crazy raccoon. Leisurely summer walks by the lake with his family, the Conollys, are his favorite because he can spend more time sniffing and having a blast! Also, it’s no wonder Coco likes summer since his birthday is July 7, 2020. He was given to them by a kind breeder in Pennsylvania. Coco loves snuggling with his family on the couch. He was the cutest

pumpkin in the whole doggy universe this Halloween. Did I mention that Coco is 2 years old? He is so adorable, even when he is struggling through the terrible twos. Coco is a very active, playful and friendly dog. The Conolly family truly grew when he arrived. Coco’s lovable furry BFF, Sashi, a miniature poodle, is an invaluable companion. If you were wondering where his favorite place is, it has to be the Conollys’ house because it is spectacular, amazing and lovable. It’s tough to beat, isn’t it?

Perlman Family Trip to Muscat, Oman

The Sultanate of Oman, once dubbed the Jewel of Arabia, is a small hidden country bordering Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Our daughter, Sheridan, was born 18 years ago in the Muscat Private Hospital, toward the very end of our first overseas assignment with the State Department. We had always planned to return there for her 16th birthday; however, COVID-19 twice delayed those plans. After many months of researching, booking,

planning and talking to friends at the U.S. Embassy in both Oman and the U.A.E., on Dec. 22, we embarked on a 10-day journey with our extended family to re-visit our daughter’s birthplace.

Oman has grown leaps and bounds since our time there and has recently become a luxury and eco-tourist destination. While the city of Muscat has expanded, the country has done much to maintain its cultural heritage.

No trip to Oman would be complete without an overnight to the desert … and our excursion was not for the faint of heart. Wahiba Sands is comprised of hundreds of square miles of yellow and copper sand dunes that endlessly stretch across the horizon. The directions to The Thousand Nights Resort stated that they are approximately 300 kilometers from Muscat and 40 kilometers from the closest town of Bidiyah, yet somehow, I must have overlooked that the “Glampsite” was actually in the middle of the desert,

with no road, nor any directions. Driving through the sand was an experience as our first attempt to reach the camp ended in failure as our SUV got bogged down in the soft sand dunes just before sundown. Thirty minutes of digging, a few tears, a long drive back to the Shell station in Bidiyah, followed by a $50 bargain for the new-found-desert-guide later, we made our second attempt to drive the 40 kilometers back to the resort. After deflating our tires and taking a slightly different path, by 8 p.m. that night, we were in paradise.

From the moment we walked through the doors, The Thousand Nights Resort did not disappoint. The gourmet buffet dinner with traditional rice, meats and salads filled our starving bellies; the pitch black sky full of stars looked like we were in a planetarium; the outside bathrooms attached to our huts made us feel one with nature; hiking dunes, riding camels and ATVing with their grandfather made our children’s trip to Oman complete.

Our Omani adventure ended as Sheridan’s originally began … at Muscat Private Hospital. After seven days and 878 miles driven, one extra piece of luggage purchased to carry the additional tchotchkes and lots of unique experiences, it was onto Dubai for New Year’s Eve.

2023 started off with a bang! Our VIP seating directly in front of the Burj Khalifa was actually so close that we had to lay on our backs so we could watch the fireworks without craning our necks. While waiting for the throngs of people to exit the venue, we found ourselves in the Dubai Opera House next door to the Burj and, to our surprise, were invited into their private NYE party, where they served us a three-course meal at 1 a.m. Why not?

And just like that, after an unforgettable vacation, in the wee hours on Jan. 2, our family boarded an Emirates flight for the long 15-hour journey home. This trip reintroduced our family to a place in the world and a culture that we have cherished for 20 years and reawakened our passion for travel and adventure.

LET IT SNOW: A HOLIDAY SHOP EXPERIENCE

Hovatter Elementary transforms into a winter wonderland for students and their families

Hovatter students interested in shopping for gifts could do that and more at Let It Snow: A Hovatter Holiday Shop Experience! This year, the shop was open over two days on December 9 and 10, after school hours so parents and family could join the fun too! At this cheery holiday event, there was loads to do!

In the gym, you could take a “Bee Your Selfie” at the selfie stations and also get a special winter wonderland portrait with Darlene’s Photography.

Meanwhile, the shopping was going on around you! Items ranged in price and included trinkets like a popcorn eraser, a koala pencil grip, a slinky, slime, a light-up lava lamp and a basketball. After checking out, you could have your gifts wrapped for free by volunteers, including teachers and the principal!

In the cafeteria, you could write a wish list or a letter to Santa and mail it to the North Pole, or color a Hovatter Bee Merry card to go with your gift. If you wanted to make a gift instead of buying one, there was a craft section, too — you could make different snowflake bead ornaments or a snowman face ornament! Also, you could get your face painted with lots of different holiday designs.

On Friday night, Bruster’s Real Ice Cream served frozen hot cocoa, and on Saturday morning, everyone enjoyed doughnuts, cocoa and coffee from Duck Donuts. Decorations and holiday music made everyone feel like celebrating. The holiday shop was very festive and fun!

A Northern Virginia Photographer Capturing Precious Family Moments

“I feel like I’ve had a camera in my hand since I was born and don’t know what life would be like without one,” shared Jenny Sessoms about her passion for photography. Jenny’s first camera was a 35mm Nikon that her father gave to her when she was 10. From that day forward, she viewed the world through a lens. “Between gifted-andtalented art programs and winning my first photography contest at 11, I knew what I was doing with my life at an early age.”

Helping to turn her passion into a career, Jenny attended New York Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography. Her training and talents landed her work for Disney, Westin Hotels, Honest Tea, Warner Brothers and Verizon. “I also have a certification in user experience design, so providing an outstanding experience for my families is extremely important to me,” she said. “Everyone has a God-given talent, and I humbly believe that mine is the art of photography that I share with my families to touch their lives.”

The Willowsford community resident knows quite well the dynamics of families and how to capture the moments with impact. She focuses on lifestyle photography and its organic elements. “I capture real-life interactions, relationships, events and emotions in an artistic way,” Jenny explained. “Everyone is unique, and my passion is telling your story that is unlike any other.”

The welcoming of a newborn is an event unlike any other — the joy, the frenzy and the lack of sleep. For Jenny, this is one of life’s most beautiful moments. “To most parents, these days are such a blur, so being there to capture this magical time is so important,” she

shared. Newborn sessions are done in the comfort of your own home and are relaxed, capturing simple and meaningful connections. For those who wonder why they should choose professional photography, Jenny has a simple answer. “As a parent, I know that time moves so quickly, that sometimes we are juggling so many tasks at one time, sometimes we are focused on feeding and taking care of our families, that we don’t have the luxury to enjoy it,” she said. Her photos freeze those moments forever. “Sometimes we look at our kids and say, ‘Wow, when did they get so big?’ You might have selfies and quick snapshots, but this is very different than having a professional photographer capture you snuggling your 4-day-old baby, or reading a book to your kids, or the laughter on your face when your husband whispers in your ear.”

Jenny believes families are the foundation of our lives, with family photos providing a physical reminder of the people we love. “I believe that when you fill the walls of your home with professional family photos, your children feel loved and know they are important,” she added. Having family photos to cherish and share with loved ones as the years pass by is an irreplaceable

Jenny also volunteers her photography expertise with the Boulder Crest Retreat for veterans and their families. “I have met the most amazing families there and enjoy giving back to those who have served our country.”

Jenny is a wife, mom and a “gigi” who loves to capture her own family moments, including their travel. “I cherish spending time with my husband and family, love cooking and baking for them, quietly reading together, family game nights,

walking the neighborhood trails, happy hours with the neighbors and doing yoga on our back patio. I especially cherish every second I get with my granddaughter, Emma. She may be the most photographed baby ever,” Jenny said with joy. She is also a WSET Level 2 certified wine sommelier with aspirations to do Level 3 in the future.

As a resident photographer in the Willowsford community, Jenny has met and photographed incredible families that she is happy to call neighbors. She even refers to her neighbors as her family. “When I moved here, it felt like I was coming home. It’s such a beautiful community with miles of trails to explore, beautiful parks, fun activities and a farm that provides food for us … but even more than this, it’s the people. I love my neighbors, and everyone I talk to says the same thing.”

Stroll magazine has connected Jenny with families who have their own unique stories. “I would love to meet and photograph every family in Willowsford and capture how your kids have grown year after year, preserve those grandparents’ special moments and be there for your newborn’s first days.”

OUTDOOR SPORT COURT

A multipurpose space multiplies the fun!

Tommy and his wife, Beth, have lived in the Greens for two and a half years with their son, Dominic (12), and daughters Lacey (9) and Catherine (3). They recently completed an outdoor sports court in their backyard that offers endless opportunities for play and entertainment!

“We wanted to create a space where the kids could play outside and practice sports they play. Many of the youth teams around the area only get very limited time to practice, or the fields are too wet, so this would allow us to have the teams come over to practice here,” Tommy said. Since he is the owner of Accommodations Home Services, they did the sports court themselves along with the rest of the backyard design. Accommodations Home Services is a distributor for Versa court tiles (www.versacourt.com), Bull BBQ outdoor kitchen equipment (bullbbq.com) and Trex outdoor furniture

(www.trexfurniture.com). While most of the backyard was completed during initial home construction, they added the sports court this summer.

Tommy says their favorite part of the sports court is that it isn’t just for basketball. “Our multi-use court brings the opportunity to enjoy a variety of fun games such as softball, baseball, pickleball and more. Since we have a full-size batting cage, it allows the kids and their friends an opportunity to practice all they want!”

One of the best benefits of this unique space is that it has resulted in increased family time. “The court lets us hold our kids’ team practices when other spaces are not available for basketball, baseball or softball,” Tommy said. “The kids want to spend more time at home, even on weekends, if fun activities are available, and will invite their friends instead of going out!”

If you’re looking to add some fun to your outdoor space, give Accommodations Home Services a call, and they will help you design your backyard!

A Different View from Tulip Poplar!

Sometimes on walks around the neighborhood, something can catch the eye and provide a new perspective on familiar views. That is what happened one recent morning when resident Paul Loudin was near Poplar Pond. “I noticed the perfect reflection of the two houses on the corner of Tulip Poplar and Grassland Grove, right by the roundabout, and took a picture. I flipped it upside down, and it makes for a cool illusion.”

What spots near you could reveal a fresh point of view with a second glance? It’s worth another stroll outside to find out!
