Greetings, Willowsford community,

June is here, with its sunny days and starry nights, making it the perfect time to celebrate everything summer offers, including Father’s Day. Let’s show our appreciation to the dads, grandpas, and mentors who enrich our lives.

Stroll Willowsford goes beyond a publication; it’s a 24/7 resource connecting your community personally and professionally. Our mission is clear: to help you know your neighbors, foster relationships, build belonging, and introduce trusted local businesses. 1 / My family, with my son Alex (26), my husband Frank (married 32 years!), and my daughter Haley, were together in April at a 5K in Waterford. Cherishing every adventure or moment spent together, valuing quality over quantity as my kids grow older. 2 / Excited to sponsor the drink station with Honor Brewing at the Willowsford Conservancy’s Earth Day Celebration! Enjoyed their fantastic beer and wine, spent time with residents, and supported the planet. Cheers to eco-friendly sips and unforgettable memories!

AS WE WELCOME THE WARM DAYS of June, I’m delighted to share some community updates. The pools and parks are open in full swing, offering the perfect spaces for relaxation, recreation, and family fun. Whether you’re looking to swim, sunbathe, or enjoy a stroll or bike ride on the trails, the amenities are ready to provide a memorable summer experience for everyone. Don’t forget to sign up for alerts and follow us on social media.

I’m thrilled to see residents taking advantage of the refurbished sand volleyball court at The Lodge! This facility is perfect for those who love to spike, serve, and dive into some friendly competition. Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to the game, our improved court promises hours of fun and excitement for all ages especially being that it’s next to The Lodge playground and pool.

Strategic plan implementation is also progressing smoothly, focusing on the Willowsford HOA mission to preserve, positively impact, and enhance lifestyle, programming, facilities, and community agrihood in order to deliver the unique Willowsford experience.

In this month’s issue, don’t miss our special feature article titled “Get to Know Your HOA Board Members.” This is an opportunity to learn more about the dedicated individuals who volunteer their time to serve the community. Understanding their roles and aspirations fosters greater transparency, trust, and collaboration within the community.

Lastly, mark your calendars for the biggest event of the year on Friday, June 28th—Family Picnic & Fireworks! We’re expecting over 3,000 people to join us for an evening filled with live entertainment and a spectacular fireworks display. It promises to be a fantastic community gathering that celebrates our shared values and friendships.

As always, your Homeowners Association is committed to making Willowsford a wonderful place to live, work, and play. We appreciate your continued support and participation in making this vision a reality.

Wishing you all a joyful and sun-filled June!

Fred Ferares, President

What is your favorite recent memory?

In June 2023, my wife and I traveled to Freedom, Maine where we met with our son and daughterin-law who flew in from Florida, and friends who flew in from Hawaii for the best culinary experience that I’ve ever had. Per their process, we submitted a postcard to The Lost Kitchen in April 2023, and Jill got the call in May 2024. The Lost Kitchen prepares meals from food locally sourced from farmers and fishermen throughout the season. Of the 70,000+ postcards they receive each year, we were one of the few randomly selected. For five hours, we experienced a meal that lit up our senses of taste, smell, sight and sound and walked away with a memory we will cherish for years to come. At Willowsford, we get to experience something like that with farm-forward events like the CSA Dinners, Thursday Supper Club, and other food and wine events throughout the year.

What is your favorite place you’ve traveled to?

Italy! I love the old world as well as experiencing different cultures and eating different foods. We were in Venice last summer and enjoyed the grandeur of the canals, but also enjoyed walking through where people live and shop and even spent time in a grocery store to see how people eat. In

Rome, the splendor of the ancient world is on full display, and the history you take in walking through the Vatican is serene. Portofino is one of the most beautiful coastal cities that I have ever been to, and each time that I have been there I’ve made a new memory of a lifetime with my wife.

What is your favorite family tradition?

Putting up our Christmas display under the tree. Since 1993, my wife and others have been giving me pieces from the Department 56 Dickens Village collection. That collection is on full display under our Christmas tree each year and set up as a small village complete with a train station, homes and businesses, a church and town square, streetlamps, horsedrawn carriages and sleighs, and even a HO scale train from my childhood circling the town. It is the place we gather during the holidays to light the family tree (and the village below), sit and listen to Christmas carols in the evenings, and place the gifts that are opened throughout the season when family and friends come to visit.

What is your favorite quote?

“If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” — Martin Luther King Jr.

What is your favorite family tradition?

WILLOWSFORD

Harry Pugh, Treasurer

What is one thing that instantly makes your day better?

Anytime my wife smiles at me. Even after 25 years I still get a thrill from one of her smiles. She smiles at me almost every day so I tend to be a very happy man.

What is your favorite recent memory?

Holding my newest granddaughter, Maeve, in my arms. She was born a month premature and we weren’t allowed to see her for some time.

What are your hobbies?

I like hiking, biking, skiing, and reading books. My wife and I regularly hike and bike the various Willowsford trails and are proud members of the “Willowsford Illustrious Novel Enthusiasts” book club.

Alisha Malik, Secretary

What is something that always makes you smile?

My forever puppy Izzy (full name Isabella “Toothless” Malik)! She is the first dog I ever owned and is the sweetest

pup that ever was! I love watching her interact with my two boys. She starts getting so excited when she knows the boys are about to come home from school and waits for them by the garage. She takes turns nightly snuggling with each of them, and it is the cutest thing ever!

What is the best advice you’ve ever received? “Love the life you live. Live the life you love.” —Bob Marley

What is your favorite place you’ve traveled to?

Maui, Hawaii! It by far exceeded any expectations I had of how gorgeous the island is! My husband and I went to Maui for our honeymoon.

Steve Bloom, Director-at-Large

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies are really all based on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). I love building things at home, including drones and robots. I also design signs and love woodworking. I use some of the tools like CNC machines, 3D printers and laser cutters. I also use Raspberry Pi and Arduinos for projects. There is tons of math involved in all of these which keeps my mind fresh.

What is your favorite Willowsford event?

Dueling Pianos Night! My wife, Eileen, and I always join a bunch of our neighbors for the experience. It’s such a fun time because the musicians play a lot of music from the 80’s and 90’s which we love so much. It’s a super awesome time and I can’t wait for the next one to come. I think we should have that event twice a year.

What is your favorite quote?

“If you are not willing to fail, you are not ready to succeed.”

Together, Together, Together The More We Get

The more we get together, the happier we will be. This childhood song by Raffi is as applicable today as it was when we were singing it on our carpet squares. What sets Willowsford, this place we call home, apart from other planned communities is our emphasis on building community by engaging in programming, events, and volunteerism - all through the lens of experiencing the natural world. And while building community and institutional resilience through improved soil health, removal

of invasives, and caring for our ecosystem is important – equally important is building resilience by providing opportunities to truly belong; this is what elevates Willowsford above the rest and makes it a community that others aspire to join or emulate. Not only do we have the opportunity to plant environmental seeds in our own backyard, but we also have a dedicated Conservancy Team that strives to find opportunities for the community to engage alongside us. Engaging with

GUIDED BIRD WALK, FEBRUARY 3

the Conservancy not only provides you with a sense of wonder, but it also provides an opportunity to connect with your neighbor, meet a new friend, and find commonality amongst others who have chosen to call this place home.

Have you engaged with the Conservancy lately? There are a wide variety of options – and this month we are taking the time to pause, reflect, and appreciate some of our favorite adventures over the past few months.

Scott Harris, founder of Catoctin Creek Distillery and board member of Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy, led the community on a guided bird walk along Wetlands Way in The Greens. On a chilly morning, we spotted a total of thirty-one bird species, including all of our local woodpeckers except for the elusive pileated woodpecker. Our favorite sightings? The red-headed woodpecker and a winter wren!

JOHN CHAMPE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HELP AT THE FARM, WEEKLY

Two years ago, a partnership was formed between John Champe and Willowsford Farm. Every week, a small group of kids with disabilities joins the Farm Team and assists with Farm chores ranging from putting on labels to seeding in the greenhouse. The kids gain a sense of what Farm life is like and provide the team with a greater sense of purpose by giving back to the community.

VALENTINE’S DAY NATURE CRAFTING, FEB 13

We celebrated the season of love by doing Valentine’s Day-themed nature crafting. Thirty kids joined in making heart-shaped seed bombs, cardboard cutout bird feeders, and painted Valentine’s Day cards using paint made from Farm-fresh beets.

TRASH, MARCH 5

Volunteers make the world go around – this year we had more than 150 community members join the team in helping us keep Willowsford beautiful during our second annual Let’s Talk Trash clean-up day. Collectively, across all four Willowsford Villages, we collected 986.5 pounds of trash including 77.75 pounds of recyclables. What were our most interesting trash finds? A rusty bed frame and old sink found buried in the ground near Cedar Pond Pavilion. But the best part of the day was following our workday, when we celebrated with food and conversation at the Boat House.

CANVASSING APPRECIATION GATHERING, MARCH 7

In early December, the team engaged several Willowsford residents who helped us knock on every door in Willowsford to help spread the message about Willowsford Farm offerings. To thank them for their incredible efforts the team held an appreciation event to thank them but also to share what we learned while canvassing. The takeaway: this community values the Farm and where their food comes from. Two of our volunteers, Jill Ferares and Julie Nash, received the ‘Golden Sneaker’ award for visiting the most Willowsford houses. Many thanks to everyone who helped with these efforts and to everyone who opened their door to welcome a conversation.

JR. CHEF ACADEMY COLLABORATES WITH THE FARM, MARCH

The latest session of Jr. Chef Academy was split between Farm chores and related cooking classes. For four weeks, kids joined Farmer Andy at the Farm where they learned how to collect eggs, seed and harvest microgreens, and wash and bag root crops. Following each session, they then headed to the Sycamore House Kitchen where they spent time with Chef Emily utilizing Farm-sourced food. This collaboration provided young residents the opportunity to understand where their food comes from and how to use Farm produce to prepare a healthy meal.

BUILD-A-BIRDBOX WORKSHOP, MARCH 28

Families joined us at one of the most scenic amenity spaces in Willowsford, Cedar Pond Pavilion, located at the southern end of The Greens, to learn about local birds and build nesting boxes. This program was led by members of our Land Stewardship Team, Taryn McFarland and Emily Lawrence, who taught participants about local bird species and guided them through the building and decorating process. These boxes were made just in time for the beginning of nesting season and are hopefully now full of hatchlings!

MEET THE CHICKENS, APRIL 5

Families visited the Farm to meet and learn about our flock of 450 pasture-raised chickens with Farmer Anna. They entered the chicken coop, collected eggs, learned about animal husbandry, chatted with our volunteer egg washers, and each took a dozen eggs home.

GREENHOUSE SEEDING, WEEKLY, MARCH-MAY

The weekly seeding in the greenhouse program, led by the Farm Team, provided the community the opportunity to see how their food is grown at the beginning of its journey. Every year, the Farm starts more than 150,000 plants in the greenhouse – through this seeding program community members were able to seed and chat with the Farm Team to dive a little deeper into topics such as how and why certain varieties are grown, typical germination rates, and what the next steps are in the production cycle.

SOLAR ECLIPSE VIEWING, APRIL 8

More than fifty people joined the Conservancy Team to experience the eclipse at the Willowsford Boat House. With over 88% of the sun covered we were able to experience the darkening skies and watch through our glasses as the sun became eclipsed by the moon.

We hope this reflection of past events inspires you to join us for an upcoming opportunity to build a greater sense of belonging in our community. To check out the latest and greatest volunteer, program and event opportunities visit the Conservancy website by scanning this QR code today.

HOW CAN I AVOID TAXES BY INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE?

Ask The Sisters That Sell

Michelle: Let’s say you want to sell an investment property but the property has increased by $500,000 and you don’t want to pay capital gain taxes. We would suggest that you consider the potential bene ts of structuring your upcoming transaction as a 1031 exchange.

“You can legally defer capital gains taxes...”

Deborah: You can legally defer capital gains taxes under Section 1031 of the Internal Revenue Code if you sell an investment property and then use the entire proceeds of that sale to buy a new investment property, subject to strict rules.

Michelle: Yes, and those rules include that the seller must identify a potential replacement property within 45 days of their sale, and the purchase of the new property must occur within 180 days of their sale.

Deborah: You don’t have to pay the taxes as long as you keep selling investment properties and reinvesting them into new ones that are equal or greater in price to the one you sold. You can keep deferring capital gains.

"...your heirs don't pay taxes on these gains."

Michelle: The crazy thing with today's tax code is that your heirs don't pay taxes on these gains. The investment property gain, previously just tax deferred during your lifetime, would go away at your death. When you die, you pass the properties down to your heirs at a stepped-up basis.

Deborah: It’s the ultimate real estate investing hack!

Michelle: This is a game changer! It’s also important to note that a 1031 exchange requires enlisting the assistance of a “quali ed intermediary” who must hold the proceeds from the sale in escrow until they’re ready to be applied to the purchase of the replacement property.

Meet Michelle Perl Stanko and Deborah Perl Davis, the two sisters behind Ask The Sisters That Sell. Together with their mother, Laurie Perl, they make up The Pearl Team. Drawing on their expertise as Realtors, they dive into market-specific topics relevant to Willowsford where Michelle and her family live.

Honoring Katie Webb

MY FRIEND KATIE IS AWESOME! She’s just like me. She loves to read, play with her dog, and build things. But the coolest thing about Katie is that she started her own charity called ALOE to build a library for kids who don’t have many books!

Katie and her friends even collected over 850 books and organized them by age so everyone could find the perfect story. I bet they had so much fun, and they made a lot of kids really happy.

If you want to learn more about ALOE and maybe even help them build more libraries, check out their website: www.aloe-serve.org

I’m so proud of Katie for making a difference! She’s my hero!

Here’s some stuff we talked about!

What inspired you to create the charity and how has it changed over time?

I grew up volunteering as a child and I wanted my family, and most importantly my children, to see how awesome it can be to give your time to those who are in need. I wanted to teach them about basic needs in our community and world through action vs. just telling them about it. In sharing this concept with friends, they too wanted their kids to experience giving back through action. They also wanted to ensure there was an educational component to understand the activity and mission being supported.

One afternoon, some friends (Ashley, Caroline, Sandy) and I were discussing this idea of creating a charity providing

families a way to give back together. We all had kids of different ages. What if we could create opportunities for children to be a part of bridging the gap between those who needed support and those who had support to give? What if we could help educate people from a young age on how volunteering can change lives and how it all works? That is where the dream took its first step towards reality. Those very same friends are now part of the ALOE board of advisors. They each have such awesome unique talents and backgrounds. Each of their personal stories is also part of why ALOE exists. Please check them out on our website. These ladies, and my very own mom, Judy, are a huge part of our official incorporation. Together we defined ALOE’s mission, and we collaborate to ensure we stay true and accountable to our purpose. Each of these awesome women is a significant part of how our charity is run. Together we review each volunteer opportunity and determine if it fits within our purpose and mission.

What’s the main purpose and how do you want it to make a difference?

In short, our purpose is to create volunteer opportunities for people of all ages coupled with education on how the volunteering will impact our community and world. We want to

24 June 2024
NOTABLE NEIGHBOR

expose people, including young people, to the joy of not just sharing money but also sharing time and talents with others.

It’s about helping people find volunteer activities that are right for them. We strive to find different ways for people to get engaged. Everyone has unique gifts and talents combined with different “comfort zones” when it comes to volunteering. The two biggest challenges are 1. finding time to share the talents and 2. finding a place in need.

That’s where we, ALOE, come in to help bridge the gap. There are many ways to volunteer and make an impact on the community and world. We help people of all ages find purposeful volunteer activities that they enjoy. The name “ALOE” means “A Love Of Everyone.” We believe we can show love to others through simple acts of kindness.

How did you come up with the book library idea?

Hmm, I’m not sure exactly how it all came together. I think it was a combination of having visited the shelter in the past with ALOE and seeing how many books we had at home. I knew we didn’t need all of them and was curious who would need some extra books to read. Then I had the idea of the shelter. I first ran it by our board and they were just as excited. I then called Linda at the shelter and she was happy to have the us support creating a dedicated children’s reading area… soon after a book drive was in action.

How did you get all the books for the library?

We shared information about the idea to neighbors, families, and friends and people started donating books. The shelter also had some books already on hand. ALOE supplied an extra bookcase and organized a dedicated space in the shelter that could be used as a reading library. We had some awesome teens in the community volunteer to help sort the books by age prior to taking them to the shelter. A kind Willowsford community member volunteered to supply (purchase) an additional bookshelf for the library space and had it delivered to the shelter. In early April, a group of young Willowsford

volunteers worked together to put all the books on the shelves. The volunteers worked to reorganize the books donate and the books at the shelter by age as they set it up. This made it easier for the children at the shelter to find age-appropriate books. In the end, so many books were donated we were able to donate some of them to a second charity in need as well. We received over 850+ books!

Really, it was all about people coming together to volunteer, share and meet a need.

Who helped you with the library?

It was a combination of efforts by our board of advisors, young volunteers in our community, and working with Linda at the shelter to coordinate. We had many families donate books. It took everyone coming together to make it all happen. I must give an extra special thanks to our board member Ashley who not only volunteered her time, but space in her home, as the weeks of drop off and organization took place.

How much money have you raised for your organization?

We just received our official 501c3 status! We haven’t done any fundraising yet, however we hope to do that soon as we grow and have more ways to give back.

Stroll Willowsford 25

When did you start the charity?

We started the charity last fall and we officially incorporated in January this year, 2024.

What do you like to do for fun when you are not working?

This charity is currently 100% volunteer-run. I have a full-time career outside of the charity. For fun, I love to spend time with my family. We really enjoy sports and being by the water. In the summer we love anything water-related including paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing, snorkeling, swimming, or going to a lake, river, or beach. We also love riding bikes, camping, cooking together, and exploring new places as a family.

How many kids do you have, and do you have any pets?

My husband Bryan and I have 3 kids, Mason, Gracie, and William and we have a pet dog. Her name is Bell.

If you could volunteer to help anyone in history who would it be?

What an interesting question. I’d say Mother Teresa. She dedicated her life to her charity and helping those in need. I think I could learn so much from her if I volunteered alongside her for a week or even a day. She is such an inspiration.

What other plans does your charity have for this year to accomplish?

We have a super exciting opportunity coming in June for families to volunteer together in a “Big” way. I can’t share all the details just yet, it’s a “surprise” volunteer activity. We are partnering with Willowsford Cares on this one and it’s going to be BIG! ALOE and Willowsford Cares have been working on the logistics and planning together for several months. It’s going to be so much fun and so many lives will be impacted. We expect to announce more about it in the next few weeks.

Thank you for the opportunity to share our mission through the publication. Our website is www.aloe-serve.org

Resident Pat Reddan got his Jeep in 2020 and ever since it has been one of his favorite things to upgrade. He initially got his Jeep at the peak of the COVID pandemic for something new to do while at home. His favorite part of the Jeep is the raised tires done by Bull Run 4x4. He loves that the top comes off because it is a wonderful way to get fresh air on a nice day. Pat says that he loves his Jeep because it is a good car for anything. Since he got his Jeep in 2020, it has had multiple upgrades done by Bull Run 4x4.

Another part of the Jeep that Pat enjoys is the community. There are multiple Jeep social media pages and they even have a special “Jeep wave.” The Jeep community has expanded over time hosting Jeep events such as parades, meet and greets, and Jeep rallies. The Jeep world is amazing and fascinating! There are so many things to love. Pat says that his Jeep is one of his favorite purchases and there is so much to explore and do with Jeeps.

Scouts’ Honor

This year, Girl Scout Week was March 10 - 16, celebrating and honoring the Girl Scout Movement. The Girl Scout Birthday on March 12 commemorates the day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low officially registered the organization’s first 18 girl members in Savannah, Georgia. They celebrate their 112th birthday this year!

What is the meaning of Girl Scout Week? Just like generations of Girl Scouts before them, their kindness and compassion make a difference! Girl Scouts have a history of helping out: from selling Treasury Bonds during WWI to donating cookies today, learning first aid in WWII to making masks during COVID-19, Girl Scouts continue their legacy of giving back.

During Girl Scout Week, Girl Scouts of all ages celebrate by demonstrating courage, confidence, and character in ways that have a real impact on their communities. The Girl Scout slogan, which has been used since 1912, is “Do a good turn daily.”

Among the events going on to celebrate this special week, at Hovatter Elementary the Equi-bees partnered with the Girl Scouts to sponsor a Week of Giving, collecting items to benefit Mobile Hope and The Dulles South Food Pantry. Another troop chose to make toys for the Middleburg Humane Foundation as their project. They were inspired by the Junior Writer meeting held there recently! I interviewed a member of Girl Scout Troop 70271 to tell us more:

What is your name, and what grade are you in?

My name is Ceci Spencer and I’m in third grade.

How were you able to make the dog and cat toys?

For the dog blankets we made them on a camping trip; we tied two pieces of felt together to create no-sew dog blankets. To make the cat toys we got tube socks and we put cotton and catnip in them. Then we tied them at the end to make the cat toys.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Girl Scouts craft toys for furry friends!

Could someone else easily make these to give to their pet or a pet in need?

Yes, because all of the things that you need are common household items. It is also a no-sew project so there is no need to know how to sew.

What type of animals did you see at the Humane Foundation?

We saw horses, dogs, cats, and bunnies.

Why did you and your troop go to the Humane Foundation?

To earn a patch and learn about what it takes to own a pet. Also to learn about pets in the shelter

What was your favorite part of going there and giving the animals the toys?

Seeing the dogs, because I really want a dog. Daisy was definitely my favorite. We also interacted with cats. We gave all of the animals many pets and LOTS of love.

Would you go back?

Yes. Definitely! With my family.

Anything else you want to say?

That I really want to foster a dog. You can also volunteer to take the dogs on a hike and then bring them back a bit later.

As you can see the Middleburg Humane Foundation and Girl Scout Troop 70271 are paw-some! The girls had so much fun learning and loving on some of the cutest cats and dogs ever!

Girl Scout week is over, but making a difference never ends! Keep an eye out in our community for more examples of Girl Scouts lending a helping hand!

Pool, Prom, and Promises

From date night to happily ever after!

SOMETIMES CONNECTIONS ARE MADE when and where you least expect it. Never did Jaclyn Ruminski (Jennings) and Nick Jennings expect to meet their lifelong partner, while out with friends playing pool on a Friday night in March of 2000. However, a few dates later they were off to senior prom as a couple. Both Jaclyn and Nick grew up in the Binghamton, NY area where summers were spent enjoying the outdoors at the Finger Lakes or taking in an AA ball game at the (then) Binghamton Mets stadium. The first summer flew and college introduced a new chapter and distance into their lives. Jaclyn headed north to University at Buffalo, NY while Nick made his way south to Towson University in Maryland. After 7 years apart, with college and a few jobs in the rearview mirror, they found their way back to each other while visiting for Thanksgiving. “When I told my father I reconnected with Nick Jennings and we were dating again, he was thrilled. Then he showed me our senior prom photo still on his work desk stating that he never removed it because he always liked Nick.” In 2010 that same photo made its way into a slide show at their wedding reception. This year marks 14 years of marriage, so a big trip is being planned to celebrate the 15-year milestone in 2025. “Never stop dating your husband,” says Jaclyn. “Find time to be a couple and remember how you began before the dog and kids.” A kind reminder to us all to celebrate the beginnings, say I love you, kiss in public, and maybe…play some pool.

I am a DYS Football player, and in my experience, it is really fun. I’ve learned lots of life lessons that have helped me grow as a person. The sport has also encouraged me to believe in myself.

I reached out to the coaches in our neighborhood for the Fall 2024 program and this is what they had to say about their experience and why you should sign up this season.

Tell us about your football background.

Coach Eways: I played football from my youth all the way up to college. My football coaching background includes interning with the Washington Redskins, Graduate Assistant Coaching at

Michigan State University, Head Football Coach at Park View High School, and Offensive Coordinator at Oakton High School. Now I coach my two sons in flag football.

Coach Lane: I started playing tackle football as a 5th grader in Centreville, under the same League DYS Football is a part of. I played Linebacker at Centreville High School, where we won 2 Northern Region Championships, and I was honored to earn Regional Defensive Player of the year and 1st Team All State.I continued my playing career as a Linebacker for JMU. I’ve coached 7th and 8th graders in tackle football and my sons in flag football. Last Fall, I joined DYS Football as a Head Coach of our 90lbs Division team. I have since joined the Board as co-vice commissioner.

Coach Shea: I am a former college football captain at the University of Minnesota, Morris. I have coached in high school, college, and the professional level with the Redskins during the second era of Joe Gibbs.

Why should Willowsford Kids sign up for the DYS program?

Coach Eways: Our goal is to provide a safe, fun, and organized learning environment for young athletes to learn and grow. We have a tremendous group of coaches with extensive knowledge of the sport and many years of

coaching experience. We want to provide the opportunity for each player to develop the basic fundamentals of the game while learning to work as a team while displaying good sportsmanship and growing as a player and individual.

Coach Lane: They will have the opportunity to learn from some of the best coaches in Northern Virginia. We are passionate about teaching proper technique, developing each and every player, all while ensuring a fun experience for players and their families. Our weight class division model is a safe approach as kids are learning the game, and within each weight class, our players are placed into teams based upon skill level and experience. Our opponents include teams throughout Northern Virginia- all teams they will later face as High School football players.

Coach Shea: The reason I got involved was to make sure safety is a top priority within the organization. I can honestly say, safety is critical in DYS Football. Safety is a part of the equipment purchased and in how we teach tackling.

MG Moving Services

My Guys Moving has rebranded to MG Moving Services. Extensive training through programs like 300x, a recent wide variety of industryseasoned hires, and large investments in equipment and trucks have launched MG Moving into the top tier of East Coast relocation providers.

Andy Lopez, MG Moving Marketing and Sales Director is extremely proud of the growth and the team that is in place at MG that is guiding the company through this growth transition and excited about sharing the expanded services with Willowsford.

“The care and concern for our clients is a reason we will always stay true to our independent roots,” says Lopez. “We can offer personalized assistance, flexible scheduling options, and meticulous attention to the details homeowners care about when it comes to their belongings. We feel like this will set us apart from the more standardized approach typically offered by van lines.”

The investment in new equipment and trucks represents the priority the company is placing on safety and lets employees know they are working for a company that values them. MG understands that this will trickle down to every aspect of how a homeowner is treated and their belongings are cared for. The large investment in on-site simulated training has attracted a top-notch labor pool in a market where hiring can be difficult.

New CEO Steve Kuhn, formerly of Able Moving and his family’s business JK Moving, was extremely excited to have long-time colleague Andy Lopez join him at MG, and the two have put together a comprehensive employee

The reputation MG has built in the residential sector has allowed the newly rebranded enterprise to expand its services to include commercial relocations. The company understands that many of the residential clients it moves have companies, friends, and colleagues that also have companies and is making large investments in making sure they can deliver the same top notch services to these clients as well.

“The expertise of the newly hired and rapidly growing labor force, sales group, and executive team is helping us deliver an unparalleled experience for our clients as an independent mover,” says Lopez. “Our clients will remain tethered to us throughout their long-distance moves, ensuring accountability and tracking capabilities from start to finish.”

MG has gone to great lengths to ensure that each client will have a dedicated coordination expert as their single point of contact throughout their relocation. Hidden fees are not present in the company’s very transparent sales system and MG knows customers appreciate this.

Every MG moving team stands ready to deliver whatever services the customer needs, but also will allow this to be the customer’s choice. Home and furniture protection options are available. Packing services and moving supplies are all available in full service and selfservice options. The company usually has used boxes that customers can arrange to pick up for free.

The Stroll Willowsford sponsorship holds immense value for MG, and the company looks forward to maintaining a long-term relationship with the community by providing first-class service. “It’s about supporting a fantastic community and helping customers make life transitions in a way so exceptional we will be able to grow with their family and friends as well,” says Lopez. “Through this sponsorship, we have already cultivated remarkable relationships, and we are truly grateful to serve the community. Tea Time, Tours and Towers

Spring break adventures in England and France!

BY RESIDENTS AND JUNIOR WRITERS ANNA AND EVELYN ROSE

ENGLAND WITH ANNA:

My family and I went to England over spring break. We visited my Aunt and Uncle and had a lot of fun! We had a proper English tea, and I discovered I really like Victorian Sponge Cake. My Aunt Sandra taught me a bit of felting which is a craft that uses needles, wool, and a lot of jabbing.

We also went to Warwick Castle which has been preserved to show you what it was like hundreds of years ago. It’s one of the best castles to tour in the country! We explored the castle and the grounds, watched a cool bird show called the Falconer’s Quest, went through a garden maze with lots of funny jokes and history facts in it, and even saw a real live peacock! There also was a knight on a very majestic horse who was retired from the Queen’s Army (the horse, not the knight.)

TRAVEL DIARIES

Then, lucky us, Evelyn and I went horseback riding on our cousin’s amazing horse named Teddy. He was really soft and good-tempered, and knew lots of funny tricks! After we came back from Paris we had a big hangout night with most of our English relatives - it was neat to be around so much family! Our Uncle Bob even arranged for a special visit from an ice cream truck for all of the grandkids and us. We laughed and had fun all night!

We wrapped up our trip with a quick driving tour of London. When we got back to our hotel, there was a petting zoo set up to celebrate Easter! It was a really special trip and of course, we were sad to leave. I hope we can go back again soon!

PARIS TIPS FROM EVELYN:

If you are going to visit Paris, there are a lot of things to see! During our trip to England, we spent a few days in the middle of the week visiting the city. One example of a cool place to see in Paris is the Eiffel Tower! You can see almost all of Paris from the very top! It is a great place to visit (unless you have a fear of heights.)

Another popular attraction is the Louvre-it has so much art, you could spend weeks there and still not see it all! Not only is there art, there are also artifacts like the crown jewels! The most popular attraction is the Mona Lisa. There are really, really big crowds to see it up close, so keep that in mind! And the third and final recommended attraction is Versailles! You can see the Hall of Mirrors, the bedroom of Marie Antoinette-yes, the Marie Antoinette- and if the weather is right, the sprawling gardens. There’s so much to see and do in Paris, but don’t forget the best part when visiting - taste-test as many pastries as you can!

Enchanted Garden

Unveiling the community’s hidden gem!

For this month’s April Junior Writer meeting, the Stroll team spent an afternoon at the beautiful National Botanic Garden, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Peter and Beata Knop. Before the gardens were created, the land used to be made up of fields that grew corn and helpful medicines to treat illnesses such as malaria. In the 1950s Mr. Peter’s mother and father, along with his grandmother bought the land, which ultimately became the National Botanic Garden. Since then, the Garden has been growing every year, both in nature and in art! In 2007 the Knops began to build something new, they called it the Hobbit Town. The hobbit homes there are made to look like the round hill-like houses in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Hobbit Town was built on top of pieces of the old Reston distillery relocated to the site, to repurpose the material and to add height to the area. They also used some of the old rock and stone from the distillery to build the Hobbit homes, along with old concrete stairs and unused, but discarded, cement sewer culverts. When exploring the nooks and crannies of Hobbit Town you will find all kinds of secrets and special touches, such as a door that opens to reveal a room you can stay the night in complete with a table,

56 June 2024
KID 2 KID

stool, room for a small cot, electricity, and fire pit right out front!

Around the Garden, you can find all different types of beautiful artwork that Mrs. Beata has created from recycled materials. When I asked Mrs. Beata what her inspiration for her art was she said that it was her family. Throughout her life, Mrs. Beata had traveled all around the world with her family, and while she was traveling, she saw beautiful places but she also saw how much trash there was in the world, and how garbage was just piling up in landfills. Mrs. Beata realized that you can make art just as beautiful as the existing works with all of the trash around us. Mrs. Beata believes that you should always be creative and that you should take inspiration from nature and the life around you.

At the National Botanic Garden, they live by the quote “The only stupid question is the question not asked.” This quote has helped them to achieve their goal of making the property completely recycled and environmentally friendly. Some examples of this would be their

57

two newest projects at the gardens - a large castle, complete with a tower and moat, and the Knop’s family mountain also known as Knop’s Mountain. When making their castle they made sure to go to landfills and dump sites around Virginia and collected all of the stone, granite, and other supplies possible to make sure it was being put to good use and not being wasted. The construction of the mountain started in the 1950s when the property was first established. During the 40-year progress of Knop’s mountain, the Knop family observed how much dirt was being dug up and was harmfully filling wetlands and other environmentally important places, during the building boom of new neighborhoods and towns in the county. They decided to try and find a solution, and collected the dirt to “build up”, rather than “fill up”, creating the mountain you can hike up today! When you complete your hike to the top of the mountain you get an amazing view. The mountain, towering over 200 feet tall, is the highest point between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. You can see 4 states, and with binoculars, the Washington Monument!

Some great things to do at the Garden are, to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the lake and surrounding forest, and to take a walk and look at all the wildlife - skinks, groundhogs, pollinator bees, frogs, ducks, and more. They also have a wide variety of plants, ranging from cactus and xeriscaping, to bee trees, and even bamboo. The National Botanic Garden has partnered with the National Zoo to provide bamboo for different animals living there, such as giraffes, and red pandas, and they helped to feed the Giant Pandas there for many years until they departed last fall. At the Garden, they have three types of bamboo native to Virginia that grow on islands in the lake, and in a tranquil Asian-inspired garden complete with bubbling stone fountains. One of the many goals of the Garden is to keep Native plants alive. While we were with Mr. and Mrs. Knop we learned that just like the gardens, nature is always changing and will never be the same, so take a look around and enjoy it while it’s still here. A huge thanks to The Knop family and The National Botanic Garden for having the Stroll team over for a wonderful afternoon!

The National Botanic Garden is open for self-guided tours for a few days each month during warm weather. I highly recommend spending an afternoon there exploring - it’s so close to our neighborhood, but feels like a magical world away!

STENSRUD FAMILY meet the

IT TOOK A DECADE

Meghan McLendon to become each other’s “forever person”, but as Meg says, “the key to a successful marriage is marrying your best friend, and in those years, we learned a lot about each other and ourselves.”

Meghan, who grew up in McLean and studied hospitality at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, dreamed of becoming a wedding planner. But at the recommendation of her dad, she applied at Cvent, an event management software company in Tyson.

Meg grew up in Fairfax and played basketball at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College while studying philosophy and American culture. She still holds the school record for the second all-time leading scorer. Since her dad had been in sales she swore she would never go down that path, but she landed a sales job at Cvent through a friend and her career took off.

The two women happened to meet in 2012 as part of a continuous employee exchange with Cvent’s office in Gurgaon, India. They stayed in touch while Meghan completed a long stint there. Over the years, the friendship became a relationship. After getting approval from Meg’s cats, Peter and Lillian, Meghan moved into Meg’s home in 2017.

Early in 2018, Meghan talked Meg into visiting Willowsford. While Meg obliged, “I made it a point to say we weren’t moving, and certainly not to Loudoun County! I always say if you had told my [younger self] that I’d be living “out here” I would have said you were crazy.”

But the Willowsford magic did its job, and the two built their dream home in the Greens, or as they call it, the “Squircle”, because it’s a square surrounded by a circle.

Meg proposed to Meghan in 2019. Their 2020 wedding plans dashed by the pandemic, they still tied the knot that September at Pippin Hill – with just an officiant and an amateur photographer. A year to the day later, the Megs, as they’ve come to be known, returned to Pippin Hill for the blowout wedding of their dreams. Having hopped around the world, from the timeless cities of Europe to the sunny ports of the Caribbean, the Megs are always glad to come home to their cozy backyard. They also enjoy getting a group together to visit local wineries, which are becoming so numerous that Meg has started calling Loudoun the “Napa Valley of the East.”

62 June 2024
The key to a successful marriage is marrying your best friend, and in those years, we learned a lot about each other and ourselves.

This January, Sloane Ridge Stensrud joined the family, surprising everyone by arriving six weeks early. Her nearly month-long NICU stay at Fairfax Hospital gave her moms a new appreciation for all the hard work of nurses and hospital staff.

Peter, now 16, is the cat version of “an ornery, grumpy old man,” Meghan laughs. Lillian sadly passed away last year, “but he’s getting used to having a new little sister around.”

Today, Meghan works in sales management at Tableau. And though she hasn’t (yet!) fulfilled her wedding planner dream, she had the joy of designing Sloane’s nursery. Meg is an account executive at Pindrop Security. She also hasn’t lost the Disney bug she inherited from her mom—they’re already planning Sloane’s first trip to meet Mickey Mouse.

When they aren’t traveling, the Megs root for the DC sports teams, and support local organizations like Willowsford Cares, Equality Loudoun, Loudoun4All, and LAWS.

The Megs see themselves in their “growing a family” phase of life. “It’s odd to feel nostalgic in the phase you’re currently in,” Meghan mused, “but we know we are going to look back and miss having our first newborn. We’re trying to soak it all in.”

“Accepting, loyal, and loving” is the Stensrud family motto. “We hope that Sloane (and our future kids) will know that our family is accepting and understanding, loyal (probably to a fault), that a rising tide lifts all ships, to whom much is given much is expected, and where love always wins.”

Ideas for styling small spaces!

Resident Sarah McCarty recently teamed up with Sara Jayne of Loudoun Market to discuss tips and tricks for making small spaces sparkle! Here’s some more about their project:

As a Willowsford resident myself, I started Sarah McCarty Interiors because I understand the struggle. We all love our homes, but sometimes finding the time and inspiration to turn them into beautiful, personalized spaces can feel overwhelming. Juggling work and family on top of picking furniture, researching styles, and finding the right pieces can be a real time drain. But for me, it’s my passion! I love helping our community create a home they’ll love. One that reflects their unique personalities and they’re excited to walk into.

I love shopping for home decor at Loudoun Market because they carry what I like to call “storytelling decor”unique pieces that not only add personality to your home, but are great conversation starters. I like to accent homes

For this collaboration, Sara and I chose to style a multi-tiered console table and a bar cart. Console tables are typically the first things guests notice when they enter your home, as they are most often placed in the entry.

MAKE A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION WITH - 6 TIPS TO STYLING A STUNNING CONSOLE TABLE:

1. Consider Balance and Proportion: Start with Anchors: When first arranging items, place a visually substantial piece on each end of the top tier. This could be your large lamp and ginger jar arrangement, or two similar-sized items. This creates a sense of balance and sets the stage for the rest of the display. Vary the Height: Don’t be afraid to mix heights across the tiers. Taller items like lamps or a framed picture can draw the

with pieces that are not considered mainstream. I believe everyone’s home should be personal to them, and not a copy of a retail catalog. Plus, Sara and her team are always so welcoming and just genuinely great to work with!

Whether it’s styling a welcoming entryway or creating a conversation-starting bar cart, I can guide you through the process and help you find pieces that tell your story.

eye upwards, while lower profiles like bowls or decorative boxes create a sense of grounding.

2. Create a Focal Point and Coordinate: If you have a statement piece like a decorative mirror or a large piece of art hanging above your console, pick up on its colors, materials, or style when selecting items for the table below. This creates a cohesive look and draws the eye upwards.

3. Play with Texture and Materials: Combine smooth surfaces like ceramic vases with natural textures like woven baskets or wooden bowls. This adds visual interest and depth to your display

4. Layer for Dimension: Don’t be afraid to stack items! Place a small decorative

box on top of a stack of coffee table books. This creates a layered effect and adds visual height, especially on lower shelves.

5. Embrace Negative Space: While filling the tiers is important, leaving some negative space allows the eye to rest and prevents the display from feeling cluttered. This is especially important on the top tier.

6. Seasonal Touches: Update your display with seasonal elements. Swap out the floral stems for pinecones and winter greenery in the winter, or add a bowl of colorful decorative ornaments during the holidays. This keeps your entryway feeling fresh and inviting year-round.

“While we carry a lot of new items, it is the vintage pieces that make Loudoun Market special. And these are also the items that can take your home from predictable to interesting. It’s the balance of old and new that create that je ne sais quoi.”

charming shopping experience for Willowsford families, offering a mix of old and new, curated and handmade merchandise. We claim to have “all the things” and from the list below, you might agree: furniture, home decor, art, gifts, barware, jewelry, clothing and fashion accessories, antique and vintage treasures, furniture paint and diy supplies, even a selection of prepackaged consumables like cocktail mixers, tea, jams, nuts and old-fashioned candy sticks.

About the Barcart:

There is so much to love about a bar cart! Of course, just the thought of making a special drink is fun, but there are endless reasons why every home should have one. First, let’s talk hospitality. Some people would see it a crime not to offer a drink to a guest visiting your home. With a bar cart, you can offer more than a drink, you can offer a whole experience. That’s where personality and style come to play. Bar carts can be styled to represent your personal décor preferences based on the colors and accessories you choose. Because they are a relatively small piece of real estate in your home, they are easy and cost effective

to transform for special occasions and the changing seasons of life. Let’s imagine a margarita theme for Cinco de Mayo or Old Fashioned theme for Father’s Day. They don’t even have to revolve around alcohol. How about lemonade and cookies to celebrate the last day of school or a hot chocolate cart with “all the fun fixings” in December. Another benefit is the flexibility. Because they are relatively small and typically on wheels, they

can easily be moved around the house. If the party is on the patio, let’s setup the bar cart outside!

Loudoun Market carries bar carts and all the necessities and extras to make it special. We love the way Sarah used items from the shop to create a wonderfully bright and festive bar cart. The snarky teacups, the bright faux flowers, colored wine glasses, a vintage brass ice bucket, a lovely tea towel, and the foxy ice scoop all tell a story about a lady who loves color and fun. What story would your bar cart tell?

We would love to feature your living space, either indoor or outdoor!

GET YOUR BAR CART READY WITH 3 SIMPLE STYLING TIPS:

1. Mix & Match: Instead of uniform glassware, use a fun tray to corral vintage teacups on one shelf and colorful stemware on another. This adds personality and lets guests choose a glass that suits their drink and style.

2. Simplify Your Drink Offerings: Focus on offering 1-2 drink options on the cart, like whiskey and wine. Use a unique decanter for the whiskey and a classic ice bucket for the wine. Add color and texture with a fun tea towel!

3. Pop of Color: Add a colorful floral arrangement on top to create a statement. Choose flowers to coordinate with the other colors on your cart - like hot pink tulips with light pink stemware. You could even use a brightly colored liquor dispenser or decorative straws to tie everything together.

Weight Loss Wisdom

Insights from a clinic founder helping patients with their wellness goals!

FOR SOME PEOPLE, it is difficult to lose weight and maintain their health goals. This is where my mom and her business, Elevera Health, comes in to help. My mother is Laura Titchenell, a Family Nurse Practitioner (NP). We live in the Greens of Willowsford with my dad, two brothers, and our puppy, Maple. My mom treats all sorts of medical issues from babies to adults and has throughout her career. Last year she decided to embrace a passion of hers and start her own business focused on helping people achieve their weight loss and wellness goals.

Providing outstanding pediatric care for over twenty years. Put your child’s care in our hands.

Getting to this point wasn’t easy. It took years of studying and dedication working as a nurse, earning her NP, and building knowledge, which eventually led to finding her purpose. My mom has a master’s degree in nursing and is a certified Nurse Practitioner, which took about 8 years. Luckily that was before I was born so I didn’t miss out on spending time with her. The cool thing about an NP is that they can do many things that doctors can do and are especially helpful in primary care where they can manage chronic conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. This comes in handy at home when one of us is sick or my dad hurts his knee sitting down.

Elevera Health is a pretty unique name. My mom and her friend were brainstorming names for her new business, and they combined the words Elephant and Aloe vera to create Elevera Health. The idea of this name was based on the symbolism of these words. Elephants represent confidence, strength, and taking care of yourself. Aloe vera is a plant that helps with healing and protection. Ele (elephant) vera (Aloe vera plant). Elevera. This name embodied what my mom was striving to provide her patients.

I asked my mom, “What does your business actually do?” I knew she met with patients but didn’t know much about the specifics. It turns out she does quite a bit. Her primary focus is helping her patients lose weight by providing them with prescription medications such as Semaglutide and Tirzepatide (compounded versions

of Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound), which are GLP-1s and help people not want to eat as much. These medications are revolutionary and work better than anything the medical community has ever seen for weight loss. She also becomes their partner on the road to wellness and provides encouragement, support, and nutrition information to help them reach and maintain their goals.

My mom’s focus is to help people lead healthier lives. Being overweight can cause so many long-term health problems. Laura isn’t fixated on weight, she is focused on the freedom that a healthy weight offers her patients. She wants people to be able to take a trip, walk around and explore when they are older, play with their grandchildren, and feel strong and healthy as they age. Helping people take control of their weight can literally save their life. The challenges younger individuals face manifest in other ways. My mom helps them feel strong, confident, and enjoy the person they are becoming. Weight can cause a lot of psychological trauma as we mature into young adults. In a world of social media, anxiety/depression, and non-stop judgment this can be one less thing for people to worry about. That is pretty impressive!

In closing, if you are looking to lose weight or improve your wellbeing, consider contacting my mom, Laura Titchenell, at Elevera Health. She truly cares about her patients and thrives on helping them obtain their goals. She sees patients 7 days a week, including evenings, and accommodates most scheduling requests. All appointments are done via telehealth and medications are shipped overnight to your door. It doesn’t get any easier than that.

Eclipsing Expectations

A journey to experience totality!

I want to share with you my super cool experience watching the total solar eclipse. It was like nothing I’ve ever seen before! My family and I went on a big trip to my grandparents’ house near Cleveland, Ohio. It took a long time to get there, but we finally arrived in time for dinner. We were all excited because we were going to see the eclipse the next day!

On the day of the eclipse, we went to lunch at an Ohio classic, Swenson’s–it was like Sonic Drive-in, but you had to turn on your lights for service. It was so cool! After lunch, we went back to their house to get situated outside. Don’t worry our stuffies also got all set up! We decorated paper plates which we used to extend the frames of our eclipse glasses (shout out to the Gum Springs Library for the glasses!)

During the eclipse, my mom showed us a cool trick by getting a colander and holding it slightly above the ground outside. You could see mini-eclipse shadows through each of the holes! As the eclipse got closer to being total, it started to get dark, and it even felt a little chilly. When we experienced totality, the street lights came on and the birds stopped chirping. It was so dark you could even see the stars!

When the eclipse was over, everything went back to normal. The sun came back out, the street lights turned off, and the birds started singing again. It was like magic! Did you know the next solar eclipse that will be visible in the United States won’t be for another 2 decades? I felt really lucky to see the total solar eclipse. It was an amazing experience that I’ll never forget.
