As the publisher of Stroll Willowsford, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for the opportunity to serve as a 24/7 resource for the Willowsford community. I feel blessed every day that this has been my job for over 6 1/2 years. I love connecting with each and every one of you through our monthly magazine, social media platforms, resident events, and networking events.
I believe that being connected to your community is essential for a fulfilling life. It allows us to know our neighbors, create meaningful relationships, and build a sense of belonging. That’s why we created Stroll Willowsford - to help enhance your lives and connect you personally and professionally with your fellow residents.
I am proud to say that our publication is exclusively about our Willowsford community. It’s filled with your stories, photos, and events - essentially, it’s Facebook in print. This would not be possible without the support of our SW sponsors. These businesses are heavily vetted, and they value the opportunity to support our community. They appreciate getting in front of each resident’s individual networks to build their brand, their awareness, and their word of mouth.
I encourage you to consider these businesses when you are in need of a product or service. And if you have had a great experience with one of our sponsors, we would love for you to share a testimonial at https://bit.ly/ StrollWFTestimonial, or via our social media platforms.
Lastly, I want to remind you that Stroll Willowsford is a platform for your voices and your stories. We would love to hear from you and share your family’s experiences and stories with the community. And if you ever have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your lives and for making Willowsford such an amazing community.

School is almost out and the Willowsford team has tons of fun planned for the whole family this season. Join us for Splash Parties (June 8th), Wineries at Willowsford (June 10th), Father’s Day Seafood Boil (June 18th), Family Picnic & Fireworks (June 30th), and more! Willowsford’s pools are open 11 AM – 8 PM Sunday through Thursday and 11 AM – 9 PM Friday and Saturday so everyone can enjoy the pools a little later during the weekends. Additionally, Willow Grove Splash Park is open 9 AM – 8 PM daily. That’s not all; did you know, we have kayaks available for use on Willow Lake? Hours vary when LCPS is in session; for full details visit WillowsfordLife.com > Amenities > Pools > Kayak Use.
Another popular activity during summer is fishing. There are several ponds available for catch-and-release fishing. These ponds are stocked periodically based on fish survey results as part of a multi-year plan to maintain healthy ecosystems. This is just one of the many ways we strive to be stewards of the environment. While there is much to look forward to during warm months, the increased temperatures often increase activity, some of which can be unwanted. We ask that you report any suspicious activity to Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department; the non-emergency number is 703-777-1021.
Lastly, did you know that you can listen in while the Board makes important decisions? Board decisions affect you and your family so don’t miss out on important topics thinking you have to attend in person or set aside your whole evening. You can join a Board meeting via Zoom or phone on most devices; info to join is available on the online calendar.
Kick off the weekend with complimentary drinks on tap and snacks featuring Willowsford Farm produce! First come, first served until it’s gone. Valid ID is required to consume alcohol and will be checked prior to serving. Feel free to bring a blanket and picnic to enjoy. 21+ to drink; registration not required. First Friday Happy Hour takes place monthly May through October, rotating between Sycamore House and The Lodge. Engage and connect with neighbors as you enjoy a beverage or snack al fresco. We look forward to welcoming you!

Living in an Agrihood allows us to immerse ourselves outdoors and benefit from being in nature. Our community is a place for people to appreciate the gift of the natural world and share experiences in it for generations.
Now is the time to get outside and enjoy the many amenities of Willowsford Conservancy! Camp at The Grant Family Campground or Hidden Meadow, or host a birthday party or other event at Cedar Pond Pavilion. Each offers a unique opportunity to explore and engage with the outdoors with friends and family.
• Camp under the stars and spend time with nature without traveling too far from home.
• Explore Willowsford’s many miles of trails. Walk, run or bike!
• Fish from the dock
• Sign up for an education event to learn about bio-diversity
• Volunteer at the Farm
Whether fishing, biking, nature journaling, running, walking, or volunteering at the Farm, Willowsford has something for you. Our community focuses on a shared appreciation for the outdoors, nature, and healthy farm-to-table organic food options. Find new ways to connect this summer. Get outdoors, rent a campsite, or stop by our Farm Stand on Thursday and Saturday to see what’s fresh and local and spend time with your neighbors. We can’t wait to see you this season!
Here are pictures from our annual Earth Day celebration at the Boat House! Residents enjoyed live music, nature-based crafts, fishing, and relaxing. Picnic dinners were provided by Chef Emily Worth. It was a perfect way to celebrate our neighborhood and our mission!
If you hang out with the Mathews during football season, you’ll likely find yourself either watching a college game on the screen, or joining them live on the bleachers.
This family loves any sport that involves a ball, but college football is at the top of the list.
Saj and Reena became a couple thanks to Reena’s older sister, who happened to be dating Saj’s best friend from college. Introductions were made, and destiny did the rest.
The Mathew children, Gabriella, 16, and Evan, 8, are both very dedicated athletes.
Gabriella is a rising junior at Independence High School who has played varsity girls basketball since she was a freshman. She plays AAU basketball in the off season.
“Gabriella is a very fun-loving go-getter who is always up for a challenge,” said her mom. “She is a natural leader on and off the court, always guiding her peers in the right direction. She’s ambitious and academically driven and is
involved in her school community as a member of the student council and various clubs.”
When she’s not running up and down a basketball court herself, you’ll find Gabriella cheering on the Duke and Michigan teams. She’s also an avid reader who loves to bake and visit new places.
Little brother Evan is a very energetic and caring child who will be starting third grade at Cornerstone Christian Academy this fall. “Evan is always looking out for others and putting their best interest before his own,” Reena said. “He is very determined, always pushing himself to be the best he can be, in school and sports.” Though he’s willing to try any and every sport, Evan currently plays travel soccer and county rec basketball. He is a natural on the field or court, and like his sister, he loves watching sports. “He is a diehard Penn State and Manchester United soccer fan,” said his dad, “and he makes sure that everyone knows who’s the best.”
When he’s with his neighborhood friends, Evan loves playing outside and creating new games with them.
Long before they added parenthood to their list of responsibilities, Saj and Reena started life in very different places. He was born in Dubai and came to Pennsylvania for university. Work took him to New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia before landing in Virginia in 2013. Reena is a Michigan native who earned her degree from Wayne State University.
Saj is a partner at Deloitte. He has been in the professional services industry for 23 years. The opportunity to serve clients, develop the next generation of leaders, and support the community are some of the reasons why he continues to enjoy the field.
Reena started out in the professional services industry with Accenture. As the family grew, she shifted her focus to being a dedicated stay-at-home mom. But she has always loved fashion and became a style guru for co-workers, friends, and family seeking fashion advice. Lately, she has taken that passion to the next level by becoming a social media influencer (IG: @beingreens), empowering women to cultivate their individual style.
It’s not hard for the family to come up with a list of their favorite vacation memories.
On a trip to Hawaii, it was rising for a sunrise hike followed by a relaxing day on a remote beach. Since they love history, taking in the sights (ruins, architecture, churches, etc.), beauty, and traditions while wandering the streets of Rome, Florence, and the Amalfi Coast ranks near the top, too. In France, it was the stunning opulence of Versailles, and standing
under the Eiffel Tower at night while taking in the art and rich history of Paris by day.
The three words that the Mathews say describe them best are faithful, driven, and goofy. The four of them have turned simple pleasures into family traditions. There’s football viewing, of course. They also love weekend movie nights, brunch, and visiting coffee shops—if they have pastries, that’s a bonus, Reena says. Impromptu dance-offs might break out at any time. Their favorite things about living in the Grant, and Willowsford generally, are the vast landscape, trails, sense of community, and the variety of events.
Before hiring a realtor, one should consider how well the agent knows the area in addition to their track record. Fortunately for neighbors within Willowsford, there are agents you can trust with Sabeen Khattak-Samson as one of them. “I know my neighborhood and have the expertise with support from my brokerage to give you the best experience,” she says.
Although a neighborhood agent, Sabeen’s expertise expands much further than the housing market within Willowsford. She’s a licensed real estate agent with experience in the commercial and residential property market in the entire DMV area. There are a few things that set Sabeen apart. “I like to think outside the box and carefully listen to my client’s needs, wants and considerable factors to get them into the right home, sell their current one for more and save thousands in fees,” she shares.
Sabeen delivers on these promises in a few ways. She does a proper analysis of the property and market trends to help clients make informed decisions about buying, selling, and
renting both commercial and residential properties. Additionally, she also helps investor clients with interpreting information regarding government zoning, expected property value growth, taxes, traffic volume, and more to help them make well-informed decisions about profitable investments. Being able to communicate why commercial real estate investing would be good for a client is a skill that is acquired by real experience. Sabeen can help clients transition their residential portfolios into commercial investments. “Commercial real estate brings scaling, saves time, and more profits,” she explains. She notes that her expertise is in all five primary asset types: office, retail, industrial, multifamily, and hospitality.
“Any of these assets can provide monthly cash flow and appreciate over time,” Sabeen says some ways one can make more money in commercial real estate include tax benefits, higher profits per square foot, rental price, and commercial leases can be longer which results in a longer flow of income.
I like to think outside the box and carefully listen to my client’s needs, wants and considerable factors to get them into the right home, sell their current one for more and save thousands in fees.
Knowing whether you’re making the right decision or not when considering an investment property takes having the proper realtor in town. Sabeen promises to communicate effectively to determine her client’s business needs and find attainable options for his or her business goals. Furthermore, Sabeen has cultivated “high-quality business relationships” that carry over to a client’s best interest.
For property sales, Sabeen promises to promote in every way possible, which includes online marketing, videos on social media, open houses, and multiple listings and advertising to garner the right amount of interest to reach the ideal sell price for her clients. Sabeen also says she’ll always have a positive flow of communication with other agents, buyers, sellers, mortgage officers, and attorneys who are tied to the home-buying process.
Advertising with Stroll magazine is a given to Sabeen as she believes connecting with neighbors makes a community safer and feel whole. She loves learning about her neighbors and finding ways they can bond and help one another.
In her free time, Sabeen enjoys traveling and learning about different cultures with her husband and her son and daughter. One place the family enjoys is the Italian island of Capri noting its breathtaking stretch of coastline and incredible gelato!

A very special Notable Neighbor nomination this month comes from Junior Writer Cydney McMillian for her mother Ashley McMillian!
“My mom is an amazing person. She’s super kind and compassionate about everything she does,” said Cydney. When discussing putting others first, Cydney points out that “she helps my dad’s football organization. She is my younger brothers’ biggest fan, supporting his team however she can. She did the same thing for me when I played basketball!”
Cydney also wants to make sure everyone knows that her mom “is a really good cook but doesn’t like to brag about it.” Finally, she wraps up her nomination by saying “my mom is very supportive of whatever me and my brother do, and I love her because of this!”
Do you know somebody who consistently puts others before themselves and supports others in need, whether large or small, but often flies under the radar? To nominate a fellow neighbor for this honor, send an email to billie.rose@strollmag.com.

Residents welcome spring with a neighborhood tradition!
The Annual Spring EGGstravaganza was held this year on the first Saturday in April, providing a great way to kick off Loudoun County spring break. Event attendees experienced an April Fool’s joke when the morning began with gloomy clouds and light showers, but then gave way to sunny skies and warm temperatures, perfect for an outdoor celebration!
Children were divided into age groups for the traditional race for eggs in the soccer field. While waiting for their assigned age group hunt, families enjoyed activities on the Lodge Lawn, organized by the HOA staff. Visiting the spring-themed Popcorn Bar by Chef Emily was on the top of everyone’s list, along with playing in some suds with a bubble artist, and making spring pinwheels at the craft station. Another favorite was an incredible petting zoo that included ducks, bunnies, snakes, bearded dragons, sheep, and a miniature pony! And before the day was over, the Willowsford Hoppy Bunny stopped by and joined in the fun! Big thanks to EGGstravaganza sponsors Independence Landscape and K&H Landscaping for supporting this event that is a family favorite Willowsford event!
An enclosed deck provides priceless flexibility!
A room filled with natural light and walls of windows is one of my family’s favorite places to be. The new porch on our house allows us to be outside, enjoying the fresh air, but not be annoyed by bugs. Often we enjoy breakfast on our attached deck while we watch for turkeys and deer.
The big double doors from our kitchen let us feel like we have added another family room to our house and just makes everything feel more open and brighter. It’s also a great way to spread out. Let’s be real, sometimes we need space! We designed the space to feel calm.
We fight over who gets the most comfortable spot on the couch. Fall football games are a favorite on Saturdays, especially when we turn on the fireplace. It’s already our favorite place for special occasions.
Pictures turn out perfectly before school dances, with big and small groups. The porch is a perfect prom backdrop for large groups or a cute and cozy place for daddy-daughter moments. The three-season windows let us use the porch almost all year long. We have hosted Christmas parties and even set up a Christmas morning the year we all had to be separated for quarantine. We’ve celebrated big and small moments, but on the porch, every moment feels big. My favorite moment I have had on the porch is watching movies with my family. The porch is a hot spot for fun hangouts with teenagers, (my brother and sister and their friends), or doing homework. Whether the windows are down or the fireplace is on creating a toasty environment the porch is the perfect place for a nap!
We would love to feature your outdoor oasis! Email billie.rose@strollmag.com!
The purrfect volunteer opportunity!
Welcome back to another edition of Making a Difference! Today we are talking to resident Kelly Cooper about her work at the Feline Foundation of Greater Washington. The Feline Foundation of Greater Washington, Inc. (FFGW)
is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to the rescue, care, and adoption of homeless cats and kittens in Northern Virginia. Founded in 1995, this cat rescue provides veterinary care and other necessities for a good life. They also

Our team at Lux Dental Center takes great pride in our work, and we especially value our relationships with our patients. We never want our patients to feel like a number, and always want them to feel like they are heard and empowered to make well-informed dental decisions. As a Willowsford resident-owned business, Dr. Lynn Alexander and Dr. Jason Kiangsoontra feel privileged and grateful to be the dentists of many Willowsford families. We hope to change the way you feel about dentistry, one appointment at a time!
search for permanent, loving homes for the cats and kittens in their care. Unlike other rescues, they do not euthanize healthy cats. FFGW also doesn’t have a regular shelter. All of their animals reside in foster homes until a permanent one is found. And if for any reason the family can’t take care of the animal, they come back to the organization. Kelly and her husband David, along with sons Devin and Miles have 3 cats and 1 dog: Gibson, Ruby Moose, and Riley. The youngest cat, Moose, was actually adopted through FFGW!
Kelly started volunteering with another cat rescue in 2007 when she would go with one of her best friends to help her clean the cages and play with the cats during her volunteer morning. She has volunteered ever since but started working with FFGW in 2012. She fostered the love of animals in her boys, as well, bringing them along with her over summer and holiday breaks to help in the center. They all love spending time with the cats and kittens that
come through the rescue, but also enjoy training the new volunteers in how to care for the adoption center and support the cats. Caring for animals in their transition from rescue to their forever home is the best part of working with FFGW. In the words of Kelly, “It is so rewarding to know how grateful the cats and kittens are. Even if they can only show it through snuggles and purrs.”
Over the last 5 years, FFGW has averaged close to 400 adoptions and may have as many as 80 foster cats at a time during kitten season! The volunteers even set up interviews so that they can find the perfect cat for every family. FFGW partners with local Pet Smart stores. They allow them to have in-store cat housing areas. It helps to raise adoptions and fosters while also allowing more room for more cats. Pet Smart and other businesses help to provide some of the supplies they need. The rest of the money is entirely donations from fundraisers and other events, like the Adoption Fair at the
Leesburg PetSmart every Sunday from 12-2 pm. Even the smallest donation can save cat lives, and FFGW would love your help volunteering! So if you want to feel as rewarded as Kelly does, and you think that cats are your calling, talk to the Feline Foundation of Greater Washington today!
Winner of our recent giveaway has a marvelous makeup experience!
Resident Allison Raynor was a winner of Stroll Willowsford’s February Love Giveaway and received a treatment from European Aesthetic & Permanent Makeup Center by Erika Tutoni. Here’s her review of the experience!
I went to Erika Tutoni for soft powdered micro-shaded brows and could not be more happy with the way my eyebrows turned out - they are so natural! Erika is extremely professional and very knowledgeable about permanent makeup. Her studio is pristine and gives a spa-like vibe. She walks you through the entire process before getting started. The procedure was not painful at all and the time getting the procedure flew by. Healing only took a few days and the ointment she provides helps with the process. Erika pays great detail to her work and ensures that her clients receive the outcome they are hoping for. Her work is incredible and I will absolutely be back for any future permanent makeup!

When Brad and Audra Weisberg were considering remodeling their home in the Grange they wanted a team that could not only do the construction, but also come up with the vision and interior design. Having lived in the home for over 10 years they were ready to do a complete overhaul from floors to furnishings. They hired resident contractor Dennis Liwanag, with Macanson Construction and his wife, Jennifer Liwanag, to handle the interior design.
“This project was probably our favorite to date because we were able to transform not just one space, but an entire home. Audra and Brad were phenomenal to work with and were so receptive to our vision and ideas. We really wanted to understand how their busy family of 5 lives day-to-day so we could create spaces that were not only beautiful but functional as well. It was important that what we created reflected them,” Jennifer explained.
“With 3 teenagers and 2 dogs, we chose products that were durable and livable. The LVP floors came from California and have a nice variation in color. We made sure the mudroom had plenty of closed storage to keep things organized, and Jen added details like wallpaper and trim to make it welcoming. We also designed a custom island over 10 feet long with plenty of cabinetry and countertop prep space. Every room has some special detail or feature that we know they will enjoy for years to come,” added Dennis.
Jen and Dennis were amazing to work with and we love our new space. I could sing Jen’s praises all day- she truly did so much for us. They worked with us every step of the way and kept the project on schedule and within budget! We have already started our next project and highly recommend them to anyone looking to renovate their home, for any project, big or small!
-AUDRA WEISBERGDennis and Jen are joining forces to create their own concierge remodel and redecorating service! Look for more information about this dynamic duo’s services coming soon!

In Spring 2019, Setu Coryea gathered a group of neighbors together for an inaugural book club meeting in the Grove. After a nearly 3-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, they gathered again this year in March to discuss a book, Read This and Call Me in the Morning, written by Grove neighbor, Fiona Brown. Brown is a licensed Professional Counselor, mom of two boys, and Student Assistance Specialist at Rock Ridge High School. A licensed Professional Counselor, mom of two boys, and Student Assistance Specialist at Rock Ridge High School, Brown has spent her career focused on mental health and substance abuse treatment for teens. She wrote this book to give parents the basics about teen substance in an easily digestible handbook with clear guidance.
The book intends to “ditch the scare tactics and stigma, and focus on using a straightforward, healthdriven, and conversational approach.” Chapters include “Why Teens Use, “Gateway Drugs” and “Having the Talk(s).” In the fourth section, there are tactical chapters like “Spotting the Warning Signs.” Cartoons, woven throughout the book, help illustrate difficult topics, and were useful when moderating teen group therapy sessions.
Brown emphasizes parenting tactics, like practicing social-emotional skills at home and creating accountability from a young age. Accountability not only includes responding to unhealthy behaviors but also reinforcing healthy ones. She encourages setting the expectation that honesty and empathy are part of the family’s ethos. which underpins healthy communication. Frank, open conversations with teens about brain health and holding children accountable for their words and actions is critical.
One quick takeaway from the book is to find “teachable moments” around the topics of drugs and alcohol, which can be inspired by a movie scene or news article. However, Brown explains that “teachable moments are not a sermon. “Teachable moments are a conversation, not a sermon. If you go on too long, you’re likely to be met with resistance if your child anticipates every one of these situations will turn into an exhaustive review,” Brown explains.
Parents can use this powerful tool to educate themselves and communicate with their teens about substance abuse. As Brown states, “Through awareness and open discussion, we can dramatically change the future landscape of teen substance abuse.”
Congratulations to resident Samuel Wuthnow, 8, who won the international piano competition and just had his winner’s recital at Carnegie Hall in New York City on February 25, 2023!
Samuel started learning piano at the age of 5 from his mother Grace. He and several of her Willowsford students from Grace Music Studio have competed in the U.K. London Young Musician Competition, earning Gold, Silver and Bronze prizes! Right after the new year, Samuel brought back the Gold Prize in the most competitive category – 8 and under! Samuel’s little brother Thomas has already begun playing piano as well, inspired to be on the big stage like his big brother!

Every year Hovatter Elementary School hosts a basketball game where fifth-grade students and teachers compete. It is mixed up randomly so that there is a combination of teachers and students on each team. There are two teams: the Blue team and the Green team. The Hovatter PTA provides t-shirts to each team to use as jerseys with corresponding colors. Last year in the first-ever Hovatter Hoops, the Blue team beat the Green team 5033, so this year the Green team was out for revenge!
The game was held at Lightridge High School. As soon as you walked in there was a concession table full of snacks and drinks to eat. They sold Badd Pizza but just before halftime, they sold out. Hovatter had what everyone wanted: Prime Sports drink! There was a $5 deal where you got a bottle of Prime and a snack so at a first glance you could see everyone
with a bottle of Prime in hand. As soon as the teams were done warming up they got into a huddle to get pumped up.
Tip-off time: As the starting lineups came out on the court, Hovatter Principal Mrs. Mercer and Vice Principal Mr. Finnerty vied for the ball for their team, with Mr. Finnerty in blue and Mrs. Mercer in green! Blue won the tip-off but Green was right behind them, and for the first time ever Green was in the lead at 2-0. Kids were getting subbed in and off the court every five minutes to keep some fresh legs in the game. Right before halftime, you could hear chants of “Let’s Go Green, Let’s Go!” Though Blue was not affected and had a strong 16-8 lead over the Green team. Halftime: There was a free-throw contest and the Hovatter HoneyBeats performed! They did a wonderful job and got a big round of applause from the crowd!
Back from halftime the Green team came out with lots of energy and kept it close in a 16-14 game and then the Blue team pulled away. In the 4th quarter, it was a 24-20 game with the Blue team leading. In the last 2 minutes, the Blue team scored and came away with a 26-20 win! It was a great game with everyone going home happy, tired, and with lots of good memories made. Many fun prizes were given out such as mini basketballs and #1 foam fingers in blue and green color choices. There were a lot of volunteers there to make sure everyone had a good night and everyone did, which means a huge shout-out to all of the people that made that night happen. A special shout-out to Mr. Bot, the Hovatter Hoops referee, and the Hovatter Hype Squad. This night will be an experience many of us won’t forget and congratulations to the Blue team for coming out with a wellearned win!
Let’s interview a hardworking athlete who played! Interview With Ellis Smith. “Hi, I am Ellis Smith. I played on the Green team at the Hovatter Hoops basketball game. My favorite part of the game was when I took my foul shots and made 2 of them.
I did like Hovatter Hoops. It was a very good experience. There was so much hype among all the students, parents, families, and teachers. I was very thankful to get the opportunity to play. My fifth-grade teacher, Mr.Britcher, played in Hovatter Hoops against the Green team.
I do not play basketball on a team. I just play it for fun at home with my sister and neighborhood friends.
The Prime Sports Drink at the concession stand was amazing. I was so surprised that they offered it. They had all the good flavors. I liked all the items that they offered. It was a good variety.
I know my team played amazingly. It was a great group of staff and students. I loved how we had the loudest cheers. For the 4th graders playing next year, my advice is to just be yourself, pass the ball, and score. And most importantly, to have LOTS OF FUN.
I think an improvement would be to have kids vs. kids and then teachers vs. teachers. But that would be my only suggestion. It was such a great night, and I think that everyone had a TON of fun. I know I did! Thank you to everyone who made it GREAT!”
Frank Cardamone had always been fascinated by the classic 1989 Land Rover Defender 90, ever since he was a young boy growing up in upstate New York. “My friend told me about the ultimate 4x4, the Land Rover Defender. I was curious and when I saw it I knew that I eventually wanted it.” As he grew older, Frank’s passion for Land Rovers only grew stronger. He respected the history of the iconic vehicle, which has been in production since 1948 and was originally designed for agricultural use. However, the car quickly became more than just a farming vehicle.
The Defender was renowned for its off-road capabilities, thanks to its sturdy construction, powerful engine, and high ground clearance. “It is easy
to work on and it is kind of like Legos. You can take off the pieces and put them back together thanks to the basic early engineering.” It could easily navigate through muddy fields, cross rivers, and climb steep hills. This made it a popular choice for explorers and adventurers around the world, who relied on the Defender’s rugged reliability in some of the most remote locations on the planet. The Defender is a great sledding hill truck that is included in the memories of snowy days. “My favorite part about the Defender is that it is always the
right vehicle no matter where I’m going,” Frank shared.
In 2015, Frank and his family (Kelly (wife), along with his children (Fia and Leo) moved to England for three years in service to the State Department. This allowed for Frank’s dream of owning a Defender to become a reality. He scoured the classifieds and finally found the perfect one - a 1989 Defender 90 in good condition. It had been lovingly maintained by its previous owner, and Frank knew that it was the one he had been searching for.
"Our family knows the high cost of repairing and maintaining your vehicle. My experience gained at a major auto dealership I know to exceed the expectation of each customer that comes through the door, whether for the first time or for a return visit. Let us care for you and your car. "
- Mike Hillyard.
Since then, Frank and his family take the Defender to explore western Loudoun wineries, breweries, and farms. He is never happier than when he is behind the wheel of his beloved Land Rover, with his family on a sunny Sunday afternoon. When asked about the servicing for his specialty car, Hillyard Automotive immediately came to mind. “Mike and his team are first class, they are really customer focused and they like to solve problems and
my truck has a lot of interesting problems to solve. They do great work and I can count on them to get the job done.”
The Defender is more than just a vehicle - it is a symbol of his passion for adventure, his love of the outdoors, his deep connection to the English countryside, and its reliability to take the family on new and exciting journeys.
Campbell Lawn & Irrigation
BY KATELYN CAMPBELLCampbell Lawn & Irrigation is a long-time Willowsford service provider, working with numerous local families to enhance and uphold their lawns. Herndon-raised brothers Taylor and Colby Campbell established the business in 2010 after working in the industry and gaining the necessary experience to branch out on their own. Starting with a few pieces of equipment and a small staff, they built a reputation in the area to expand to what is now over 50 crew members and an office staff of 5 and counting - many of which have been with the company from the very beginning. Campbell’s services include weekly mowing, lawn care services such as fertilization and weed control, irrigation systems and maintenance, aeration and overseeding, landscape lighting, and drainage projects.
“We’re passionate about the work we do and our clients can see that. We’re all about building personal relationships and making sure each client is satisfied with each job and with our staff,” said Taylor. With that in mind, Taylor and Colby are very involved in the daily operations; many times you’ll reach Taylor on the phone in the office and meet Colby in person to go over their services. Their 200+ Google reviews speak for themselves, many of which are 5-star reviews.
As a family-owned and locally operated business, they consider their clients and staff an extension of their family. “Some of us are actual family, including my brother, my cousin, and my wife recently joined the team. Beyond that, we have some office staff members we’ve known since we were little and crew members that have been with us for over a decade. It’s really incredible to see how well everyone works together to achieve the same goal,” said Colby.
The company often has staff outings and is planning on hosting a big client appreciation event to celebrate 15 years in business. On a personal side, Taylor recently got married to his wife Mary, and they love to travel, try new restaurants, and
spend time with their families here in VA and in FL. Colby is married to his wife Katelyn, who also serves as Campbell’s Marketing and Finance Manager. They have two active sons, Finn (4) and Callan (2). The brothers love fishing in Ocean City, MD and spend many summer weekends at their family beach house. Their large families get together often, and most days you’ll find them keeping quite active chasing their kids and many nieces and nephews around.
If you’re looking for lawn and irrigation specialists that consistently deliver quality results through a personalized experience, contact Campbell. And ask your neighbor for a referral! They’re likely working with them or know someone in the neighborhood that is.

For the Junior Writer’s April Meeting, we were able to get the scoop on Stone Ridge’s newest ice cream shop, Bruster’s Real Ice Cream! Our team was the first group to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the magic that happens at Bruster’s Real Ice Cream. During our introduction, we were given a little more information about the owner, LeAnne Smart, and her husband Joel’s story as well as the day in the life of a Bruster’s employee.
LeAnne Smart had grown up without a Bruster’s near her neighborhood whereas her future husband grew up in Bridgewater, Pennsylvania where the first Bruster’s was opened. After LeAnne’s first taste of Bruster’s, Joel shared that one day they were going to own one! Since then she and her husband first opened a
Bruster’s franchise in Ashburn during Covid, another a year later in Fairfax, one last year in Leesburg, and now one in Stone Ridge. Each location has its own unique vibe. As small business owners they are focused on building their teams and getting to know you! When asked about future locations, they said, “Perhaps...maybe that’s a 2025 story!”
The Smarts have three things that they strive to uphold as a business: 1) Enhancing employees’ skills: Within their four stores, they employ 130 high school and college students, and for most of them, Bruster’s is a first-time job! 2) Superior products: Bruster’s shops pride themselves on getting all of their ingredients delivered fresh from their farm in Pennsylvania two times
a week. They use fresh dairy products and make sure they are serving ice cream and not just a frozen treat.
3) Striving for customer satisfaction: Bruster’s uses the motto “Scooping smiles every day!” to work towards the goal of making sure that every customer’s day gets a little bit brighter after coming to Bruster’s!
Bruster’s on-site service is truly top-notch. Their ice cream is made fresh and on-site every day with 40+ flavors available. Our Junior Writers even got to help make two flavors! Flavors of the day can always be found online at StoneRidge. brustersmenu.com. But outside of the regular Bruster’s experience, they offer other services. Bruster’s on the Go is their mobile concessions
business with mobile trucks, trailers, and carts available. In June the Stone Ridge franchise will start their online ordering and in September they will start working with DoorDash! Our meeting wrapped with the best part of all: taste-testing some ice cream! Everyone agreed that was delicious, and the location was so nice, many of the team stayed after the meeting ended to enjoy more ice cream on the patio. The Junior Writers agree: Bruster’s Ice Cream is a celebratory experience for friends and family of all ages!

neighborhood high school theater group goes on a New York City adventure!
“NYC! Just got here this morning!” The Independence High School Theatre and Performing Arts program (ITPA) recently took a three-day trip to Manhattan, New York! Home of the most amazing place in the world: Broadway. Our first day in the city started with a bus ride - packed with sleeping, eating, and, of course, singing. We arrived at Rockefeller center at noon, where we got to explore in small groups. From there we made our way to Bryant Park where
we ate lunch - NYC pizza, bagels, or Shake Shack seemed to be the most popular options. Our first activity of the day took us through Time Square. We made sure to get some warm hot chocolate & apple cider for the walk. Taking a group of theatre students into time square only excites us about all the shows there are to see in the city. We got to take a closer look at these shows at the one and only Museum of Broadway! There, we saw retired props and costumes and learned about the behindthe-scenes of current/past shows. When it was time to leave, we were a little down. But, that quickly went away because the next item on the agenda was dinner and a show! The show: Hadestown. It is a re-telling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, and it is a must-see on Broadway. Give the soundtrack a listen and you will see why our program loved it so much!
Our second day started with a backstage tour of Radio City Music Hall, where we toured the building, listened to stories, and met a Rockette! From there we headed to The Drama Bookshop, home of scripts, librettos, and fun show merchandise! Our second tour of the day was haunted, literally. Broadway Up-Close has a Ghostlight tour where you can learn about the haunted theaters of NYC and the tale of the Ghost light. After a long day of walking, it was time for
dinner. We met up with some ITPA alumni at the Hard Rock Cafe before heading to a Broadway favorite: Wicked!
When the third day came around, we knew the trip was coming to a close. But, luckily our program directors booked us an incredible last day: workshop & show! The special part of this workshop is that we would be working with an actor from the final show we were going to see: Kimberly Akimbo. We headed over to Pearl Studios for our workshop with Fernell Hogan - actor and dance captain of Kimberly Akimbo on Broadway. There, we learned a song and dance from the show, you already know we were dancing and singing along in the audience!
You can find more pictures and videos from our trip on Instagram or TikTok @itpaofficial. My advice: If you’re planning to take a trip to NYC, do it like a theatre kid.

An intimate discussion.
BY RESIDENT AMANDA STOERMER THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY SOUTH RIDING PEDIATRICSI am a current high school teacher in my 27th year of education and I volunteer with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). I see how mental health affects teenagers and their academic performance on a daily basis. It’s a tough topic but one I’m passionate about. I recently connected with local Aldie resident and Stroll sponsor, Ashley Rushing, owner of Evolve: A Behavioral Health Center, to chat about mental health with both teenagers and adults. Ashley is a licensed professional counselor for adults with a wealth of experience in mental health, substance abuse, couples counseling, and perinatal and postpartum mood disorders.
Speaking of mental health, when it comes to teenagers, students who suffer from mental health are more likely to fail school. They also may be prone to take part in high-risk behaviors, including drug and alcohol use and/or suicide attempts. Teenagers tend to spend time with their friends and begin to gain a sense of identity as they become more independent. They feel embarrassed or chastised easily over incidents that may not be such an issue with adults. These incidents sometimes cause teens to fall into a depression that others around them may overlook.
Social media is a different beast that was not around when we were kids. Bullying has shifted from being in your face and being able to go home to a safe space, to constant judgment and hyper-criticism of anything and everything they present to the world. Back in the day, if something embarrassing happened to someone, only eyewitnesses and stories documented the events. Nowadays, those embarrassing moments are digitalized, published, and last forever on the internet.
Similarly with adults when facing mental health challenges, many life areas are impacted. The two most common are work and intimate relationships. These two areas are more impacted because of the importance each area may bring to the individual. When facing these life challenges and you notice the challenges are becoming more overwhelming, please seek professional help sooner than later.
It is important to note that not all heavy mental health unravels slowly. My son had an episodic event that sent him spiraling into depression. However, even that was masked from his close friends and family, so we all missed the signs.
Awareness and compassion for those who struggle with depression should be embraced because people don’t walk around with red flags. Mental health should be addressed as much as visible illnesses, without the fear of being judged.
