A TRIBUTE TO SUMMER NIGHTS!

“Community is a group of people who agree to grow together.”

Hello Neighbors and

Supporting Businesses!

Willowsford’s Board of Directors is excited to provide an update on Stroll Willowsford as we move into the summer months of 2024.

HERE ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS TO SHARE:

Lodge Volleyball Court: A big thank you to all the hard work put in over the last few months to renovate the sand volleyball court. The court was long overdue with new, crystal clear volleyball sand, a new net and a border around the court.

With summer upon us, pool season is in full swing. We hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful amenities Willowsford has to offer, especially during the summer months. We want to wish the North and South Willowsford Waves a successful close to the 2024 season!

As we are in the warmer months of the year, we ask that you report any suspicious activity in the community. There is typically an upswing in suspicious activities during the summer months. If you see something, report it. The Loudoun County nonemergency number is 703-777-1021.

Some great events we recently completed in June:

• Splash Parties

• Father’s Day Seafood Boil

• Family Picnic & Fireworks

We will continue to have several fun Lifestyle programs upcoming during the summer. Please read the Willowsford Weekly and check Facebook and the online calendar for upcoming events.

A huge thank you to Frank Blackstone as he has moved on from the HOA Board. Frank served five crucial years as a volunteer on the Willowsford Board of Directors.

As always, please reach out to any of your resident Board or HOA team members with any ideas or concerns. We look forward to a great remainder of the summer months ahead!

Are You Nourishing Your Rainforest?

For many, summer is a time to kick back, relax and enjoy the flavors and adventures of the season. At the Farm, the seasonality of shifting from spring to summer vegetables is reason enough to celebrate. For those who enjoy eating seasonally, this is the time of year the garden is starting to produce seasonal favorites like tomatoes, green beans, eggplant, summer squash, cucumbers, garlic, new potatoes and more. Eating seasonally is an adventure – one that is better for the planet and your stomach. By eating in season, you are reducing the carbon footprint of your food and giving your microbiome a variety of flavors and nutrients that are sure to nourish what some call the rainforest of the body, your gastrointestinal tract.

Did you know there are three avenues to nourish your rainforest at Willowsford Farm?! Yep, and we have a menu for everyone! Because Willowsford is the amazing forwardthinking Agrihood it is, we have made it simple to jump in and enjoy the flavors of the season. Below are three avenues to nourish your microbiome today.

1. Community Supported Agriculture Shares (CSA Shares) - The number one way to access the widest variety of food offerings that also provides you with priority access to limited crops is to join the CSA. Our shares range from the traditional Farmer’s Choice where the Farmer procures your share for you on a weekly or every other week basis to the Custom CSA where you get to pick what you want when you want it. Plus, it is convenient - with delivery available to your front door.

2. Online Farm Store – Our second option is to shop the Online Farm Store. This is a great option if you are new to eating seasonally, are on the fence about committing to a CSA share, or have a smaller household. In addition to our Farm-fresh organic veggies there is a wide selection of partner products available from surrounding farms and businesses – think local cheese, meats, flowers and more. Online Farm Store orders are available weekly,

with no longterm commitment needed, just login and place your order for delivery to your front door or pickup at one of our convenient community locations – the Willowsford Farm Stand and Boat House, Birchwood at Brambleton and Onelife Fitness Brambleton.

3. Shop the Farm Stand – And last, but certainly not least, shop the Farm Stand! One of the hubs of community connection, the Willowsford Farm Stand, provides you with the opportunity to connect with your neighbor and the humans who grow your food - including Farmer Deb! The Farm Stand is open seasonally on Thursdays from 4 – 7 PM and Saturdays from 9 AM – 1 PM. With a wide range of organic seasonal offerings and engagement opportunities such as the Farmer Eric’s wagon ride Farm tours, Meet the Chickens events, nature crafts and story time hour - the Farm Stand is a great option if you’re looking to connect.

I Spy a Butterfly

THERE ARE OVER 80 SPECIES of documented butterflies that call Loudoun County home. The many different habitat types found at Willowsford, make our community the ideal place to find a wide variety of these amazing pollinators each summer, including Monarchs, Tiger Swallowtails, Summer Azures, and other native beauties. Butterflies need many kinds of plants to develop and survive. Many species will visit areas that are weedy and wild as well as open spaces and gardens with lots of native plants. A new lawn or an area that has been sprayed with pesticides will see few or no species. Some butterfly species require specific native plants in order to reproduce and survive. One example is the Monarch butterfly and its host plant, milkweed. Monarch caterpillars exclusively feed on milkweed leaves. The Conservancy native plant greenhouse grows and sells several varieties of milkweed, including Swamp Milkweed. You also will find Common Milkweed along many paths and trails, edges of meadows, and even along roadways in Willowsford.

participants with a butterfly checklist and all the info you need to be successful, including pairing beginners up with expert citizen scientists. The tally for the count is then submitted to the North American Butterfly Association, a national organization that tracks butterfly populations. Changes in the count data provides insights into the health and diversity of butterfly populations and the health of the habitat that is so critical to their survival. QR Code to Conservancy Programs & Events

On July 20, we will host our annual Butterfly Walk with experts from Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy during the peak time for butterflies in our area. Last year, the group saw over 27 butterflies from a variety of species. And the highlight for butterfly enthusiasts was the Sleepy Orange and its host plant, Senna, which was in bloom in late July. We welcome you to join us this year to learn more about butterflies (and even skippers too which are a type of butterfly with different antennae!) and walk around both the Wet Meadow and part of the Farm Loop Trail to see how many we can find. The program is fun and educational for both children and adults. Click the QR code below to sign up and learn about our other farm-based and nature-based education programs.

We also encourage you to get involved as citizen scientists and participate in the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy’s 2024 butterfly count. It will take place on Saturday, August 3, where individuals all over the county will report data on the butterflies they observe. LWC has been doing a county-wide count since 1975 and provide

Honoring Julie Nash

This month, Julie Nash is our Notable Neighbor honoree. Mrs. Nash has been volunteering in our community since 2018. She said that the farm and the Conservancy were some of the reasons why she moved to Willowsford. She is always helping with CSA activities and is helpful to fellow Willowsford residents. She’s very kind, smart, and friendly. Maybe you’ve met her when picking up your CSA share, or when she was volunteering at one of the great Willowsford events or, perhaps, she even knocked on your door in the Farm CSA Canvassing campaign, where she was one of a handful of volunteers who knocked on EVERY door in Willowsford to spread the news about this CSA season! You don’t have to take my word for it, check out what some of our other neighbors have to say about her:

“Julie (and her husband) really love Willowsford. She’s passionate about taking care of the land and the people who help us maintain this beautiful community. Always willing to help and genuinely interested in talking to and learning about the people who she meets. I’m so glad to have met her.”

“Julie is always so kind and welcoming when we pick up our veggies each week! She takes the extra time to get to know everyone and makes picking up our CSA that much better!”

—COLLEEN CAIN, RESIDENT

“Julie is so passionate about our community and greets everyone she meets with the warmest smile. She is a frequent CSA host at the Boat House, helping hand out Willowsford Farm shares to our customers and was an amazing volunteer with our community-wide canvassing effort to invite Willowsford to enjoy the farm this past winter! She is always willing to step up and help the Conservancy and Farm with our programs to engage and connect with the community.”

- SARAH UHRIG, WILLOWSFORD CONSERVANCY

Do you know somebody who consistently puts others before themselves and supports others in need, whether large or small, but often flies under the radar? To nominate a fellow neighbor for this honor, send an email to billie.rose@strollmag.com.

“Julie has a great passion for the Farm and the CSA program, which blends well with her talent and love for cooking. She has spent countless hours volunteering to not only help with distribution but also to tell others about the wonderful offerings through the CSA. She also volunteers at the local food bank to help others. She is a wonderful neighbor!”

—DEBBIE ANGERMAN, RESIDENT

“It’s always such a treat to visit with Julie when picking up orders from the farm! Her friendly and laid-back demeanor puts everyone right at ease, and her dedication to volunteering speaks volumes about her kind heart!”

PEARSON SMITH REALTY

Growing up, my parents loved looking at model homes. I remember driving through countless communities, wondering when they were going to tell me we were moving. We never did. I didn’t realize at the time that the seed was being planted for what would be my future profession.

After a stint in IT as a PM and then in the fashion industry, I got into Real Estate working for a builder selling new construction homes.

Helping people navigate the process of building was extremely gratifying. I am still in touch with many of those families. However, it was not without challenges. Selling new homes for 12 years, including through the housing crash, I developed a strong foundation for the business as well as a lot of resilience and grit. Working in developments where homes were going to auction/foreclosing was incredibly difficult and not lost on me. It taught me valuable lessons that guide my consultative approach to real estate to this day.

When we moved to Willowsford in 2008, my neighbor recruited me to partner with her as a Realtor. This changed the trajectory of my life because I was now a business owner.

There was freedom to operate and offer services I was excited about. Real estate became more than a transaction and a sales goal to hit. In addition to the strategy and negotiation skills required, I was able to bring a new client experience and elevate the services offered.

As a kid, when my parents remodeled their kitchen (as a DIY that took over 2 years!), tagging along to Ace Hardware was as much fun as going to Chuck E Cheese. I took that love for design and staging became an integral part of my services, yielding my clients higher sales prices and shorter days on the market.

Still needing my construction fix, I got involved in my husband’s remodeling business, Macanson Construction. My real estate and design experience have been assets for our clients. What started as a small role morphed into helping countless families invest in their homes, including some fullservice interior design projects.

Working in the real estate, design and construction industry for almost two decades, what I have found is they are all intertwined. My Instagram handle is @yourhomegirlva because I am passionate about all things home. My goal is to help others find a place where they feel a sense of connection and community or simply make the space they live in a place they want to be.

Brewing Bookworms

Students like reading a latte!

To celebrate Read Across America this year, Hovatter Elementary’s library was turned into a coffee shop, called Starbooks! The librarians thought of this theme and my mom, Mrs. Billie Rose, volunteered to create it. (She is awesome. It’s hereditary.) When each class first came in for their library time, they were welcomed by street lamps, lit topiaries, and the Starbooks sign at the library entrance. After sitting on the Starbooks green rug, there was a small lesson, and then students could pick out a pastry-shaped pillow to read on. Different areas of the library were decorated and available for silent reading time. There were “booths” with curtains, a giant sofa for lounging (because every good coffee shop has a sofa!), coffee beans (these are reading cubbies built into the wall that we usually call reading beans), and my favorite, an “outdoor” seating area with patio tables, awnings, café lights, and astroturf.

There was also a chalkboard daily menu posted for reading, a table made to look like a giant cup of coffee with a “tasting” menu of themed books, bistro lamps at every reading table, a bakery display case at the checkout counter with items to “order” (more on that later), and an oversize mug full of fresh coffee beans to add to the ambiance! The librarians were even dressed as baristas, with custom green Starbooks aprons.

As the class library time wrapped up and students checked out their library books, they could “order” a stress ball shaped like either a to-go hot coffee, an iced mocha, or a hot chocolate with our school mascot on it. Students also received matching bookmarks and stickers with the Starbooks logo as keepsakes.

All of the students and teachers loved having our own little coffee shop inside the school!

GOING GREEN

A “budding” organization aims to spruce up the environment!

SHAUGHNESSY • THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY LUX DENTAL CENTER

EARLIER THIS YEAR, Juniors Nekeisha Matta ( a resident in the Grange) and Sammi Tomlinson worked together to establish an afterschool club called TreePlenish, dedicated to planting trees to help improve the environment.

TreePlenish recruits volunteers from their high school and other schools to help source funding to buy saplings and plant them. Because they use 3 different kinds of saplings, all

of which are native to Virginia, they plant in areas where all three can thrive successfully.

Though it is an Independence High School organization, you don’t need to go there to be able to volunteer! They also work with other high schools in Loudoun County such as Potomac Falls, Briar Woods, Loudoun Valley, Woodgrove, and Loudoun County High School. The meetings usually ask people to find or donators, but with such an influx of people, they might go virtual to make it easier for everyone.

The age group for the group is geared towards high schoolers, but they might expand to middle school students in the future, as no outside experience

is needed to volunteer. They have a sponsor named Mr. Noah Bourlett, who will demonstrate how to plant the trees to any volunteers who need help.

Just like any new volunteer organization, there are great parts to it, but also many struggles in the building process. While creating the club, the most difficult part was to find sponsors. Because the organizers are high schoolers, many organizations they solicited for sponsorship did not take them seriously, and often looked down on them for being so young. But the hard work was worth it!

Members loved the first treeplanting event held this spring on April 20. The organizers were thrilled that

75 high school students attended! They were able to make an impact to help the environment, by planting more trees for the world to enjoy. Club members planted three different types of trees, called Yellow Poplar, Red Maple, and River Birch, all of which you can find anywhere in Virginia. The easiest tree to plant is the Red Maple, which was their most commonly planted tree. Though it isn’t too much harder to plant, the Yellow Polar has larger roots, so members had to dig deeper holes.

When trees are still saplings, coverage is needed to help protect them. With younger trees, tubes or covers are often used when planting so animals don’t eat them. Unfortunately, TreePlenish couldn’t raise enough funding for that during this round of planting. So instead, they had to find a safe area where the saplings wouldn’t get eaten by deer or any other wildlife. In conclusion, TreePlenish is a growing organization with plans to make the world a better place and to be able to bring many people together

while doing so. They intend on growing bigger, and getting more sponsors and donations, so they can continue to grow and plant trees. They will be holding many events, so if you ever have any free time try to check out when the next one will be, and volunteer to help!

SUMMER SLUMP SOLVED

Junior Writer recommendations for beating the midsummer blues!

With summer halfway over, do you find you have exhausted your family’s excursion to-do list? Why not go exploring and find some new favorites? Here’s a list of local recommendations from Junior Writers guaranteed to cure the mid-summer slump!

“An educational place to visit is the U.S. Capitol. You can book your free tour by going to www.visitthecapitol.gov or by contacting your local Representative or Senators.” —DOMINICK

“Bruster’s Real Ice Cream - it’s really good, and the patio and garden area is a nice place to sit, plus the grocery store next door has good sushi!”

“I recommend going to Urban Air in Frederick MD, an exciting indoor activity center full of amazing things to do! There is a ball pit ninja course, a superhigh zipline hanging from the ceiling that you use a harness to zoom around on, a trampoline area with ultra-bounce and trick trampolines, and a rock wall climbing area! There are also massage chairs for the parents, bumper cars, and even laser tag! It is a great place to spend some energy!!!”

“The Stables at Wulf Crest Farms is a fun place to be if you like horses. The trainers and other riders are nice, the barn is clean and organized and they have a number of different lesson horses with different temperaments. I’ll be going to one of the weeklong summer camps!”

“For those summer days that are just too hot, and you can’t go to the pool, I recommend the Gum Spring Library. Now, I know that I like to go to the library to read. And if reading isn’t your thing, there are also gaming computers (you need a library card to use them) and the Makerspace on the third level is AMAZING! First, there are 3D PRINTERS!!! And there are fun crafts you can do, as well as 3D-printed items. And so, I HIGHLY recommend the Gum Springs Library.”

—ALEX

“My favorite place to go is Virginia Gateway in Gainesville! I love the shopping and the restaurant options. My favorite stores are Target and Ulta. My favorite restaurants are Uncle Julio’s and Outback! During the summer they also have a little water splash area right in the center of the restaurants and shops, that kids love running through!”

“I have two: The Stefen F. Uvdar Hazy Center - it’s a place that makes history fun and has things for all ages. There are rides and interactive displays, and the gift shop does not disappoint.”

“Also, Kokee Tea has a great variety of flavors. The atmosphere inside the shop is extremely pleasant and brings immediate joy. There are snacks and different kinds of boba and coffee and tea. And there are drink options for younger ages without caffeine. I highly recommend the C&C Brown Sugar and the Purple Love Taro Milk Tea. Kokee is my happy place.”

“I have two, too! I like Fogo de Chao, in Reston Town Center. My favorite parts are the Brazilian bread and the fact that it is a buffet. I pick out my meal from the salad bar. All of the food is very tasty and there is something for everyone! Bonus: in the summer, there are lots of fun outdoor activities around the shopping area to enjoy. It’s fun to walk around on summer nights when it cools down after a great dinner!”

“I also love Tyson’s Corner Center. An awesome day would be getting to go there to visit the Lego Store, the American Girl store and Camp, then stopping for lunch at Wasabi in the center of the mall (the sushi rolls by on a conveyor belt!) and then end the day with a shake from Shake Shack while hanging out on the Elevated Plaza!”

“I have a couple as well! I love to pick peaches at Great Country Farms in Bluemont! We pick a few varieties - my favorites are always the donut peaches! And they have a wagon ride over to the peach orchard.”

“And, I go to The Chocolate Palette in Purcellville when it opens seasonally. We buy the sipping chocolate, my Mom says it tastes just like it does in Italy. Delicious!”

—PRESLEY

“I have a few: The newest coffee joint in Ashburn - Paris Baguette! Paris Baguette is a cafe and bakery with amazing options for pastries, desserts, and more! From sweet to savory items, you can get it all. I highly recommend checking this new place in town!”

“A few weeks ago, me and my family ventured out of Ashburn to try out a new Mexican restaurant joint called Taco Bamba which is located in Herndon. I highly recommend it. Great small and big plates options for all. The salsa station is a MUST try! “

“I’m sure The Filling Co. is no stranger to teens this year! It’s a must in our household that post swim team practice we have to grab their warm fried Oreos and blue raspberry slushie! Their food menu is extensive and delicious.”

Meet Griffin and Bo: these two cuties are sure to make you smile. Griffin and Bo are a part of the Reddan family and have been since 2018 and late 2022. Griffin is a big and loving English chocolate lab and Bo is an adorable American lab who loves to run, jump, and do all things active. Griffin and Bo are the perfect match and I can’t believe that they weren’t together at an earlier point in time, however, Griffin is from Bexar, Texas and Bo is from Elkton, Virginia. When I asked the Reddans why they had gotten their dogs they said that they had been wanting a dog so they got Griffin, but they started to see he was lonely, and thought that he needed a friend, so they decided to welcome Bo into their family.

Griffin is a big sweetheart who is always up to snuggle or get some scratches, and Bo is always ready to play with his ball or jump around. Bo is also known to follow people around the house wanting attention or for you to play with him, and Griffin loves to bark. I asked the Reddans if they could describe their dogs in one word, what word would they use? For Griffin, they said loving, sweet, or loyal. For Bo, they would use the words energetic, excited, or happy. Griffin is six years old and Bo is almost 3. Griffin and Bo are a perfect little inseparable pair so next you see them out on a walk or at the dog park, make sure to say hi!

PEDAL POWER

JUNIOR WRITER CYDNEY

• THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY THE ST. JAMES FC VIRGINIA

HEY THERE, FELLOW ADVENTURE SEEKERS! If you’re looking for a fun and healthy way to get around the neighborhood, then look no further than biking! Yep, that’s right, grabbing your bike (and helmet!) and hitting the road is not only fun, but it’s also packed with a ton of health benefits. So, saddle up and let’s dive into why biking is worth trying this summer.

First off, let’s talk about the coolest part – the feeling of the wild in your face! When you’re on a bike, you’re not stuck in a car or waiting for the bus. Nope, you’re the captain of your own two-wheeled ship, cruising down the street with the wind in your hair and a big ol’ smile on your face. It’s like you’re flying, but with wheels!

But wait, there’s more! Biking isn’t just fun, it’s also super beneficial for you. You see, when you pedal, you’re not just moving your legs – you’re giving your whole body a workout. Your heart gets stronger, your muscles get toned, and your lungs get a great big breath of fresh air. Plus, all that exercise helps keep your brain sharp and focused.

And let’s not forget about our Earth. Biking is one of the greenest ways to get around. Instead of burning fossil fuels and adding to the nasty pollution in the air, you’re using your own pedal power to move from place to place. That means cleaner air, less traffic, and a happier planet for everyone. Way to go!

Oh, and did I mention the adventure factor? When you’re on a bike, every ride is a new journey waiting to happen. You can explore hidden trails, discover secret shortcuts, and maybe even stumble upon a cool new hangout spot. Who knows what kind of awesome sights and sounds you’ll encounter along the way?

But wait, there’s one more thing – the sense of community. Biking isn’t just a solo sport; it’s also a great way to connect with others. Whether you’re joining a group ride with friends or just waving hello to neighbors as you pedal past, biking brings people together in the best possible way. I know you must notice the group rides that take place all over Willowsford. And we can’t forget about our Peloton bikers, although they may not be getting wind in their faces, they do often have a sense of community within their rides, like being part of a big, happy family on wheels! So there you have it, folks – the amazing benefits of biking! From the feeling of freedom to the health perks to the eco-friendly vibes, biking is hands down one of the coolest things you can do. So what are you waiting for? Grab your helmet, hop on your bike, and let’s ride into the sunset together. Adventure awaits!

ARE YOU TRAVELING TO one of the coastal beaches of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, or Florida this summer? If so, you may encounter endangered loggerhead sea turtles and their nests. This article will provide you with useful information about loggerheads, including how we can help protect this incredible reptile.

Loggerhead sea turtles are one of 7 species of sea turtles currently living throughout the world. Loggerheads can live over 100 years old, grow up to 4 feet long and weigh up to 400 pounds. The loggerhead nesting season begins after the water temperature reaches 70 degrees, generally running May through October. During this time, 30-year-old female loggerheads will return to the same general beach region that they hatched decades earlier to lay their own

hatchlings. They will typically lay about 100 ping pong sized eggs at night by digging a deep hole with their back flippers and covering them with sand to hide them from predators. After their first nest, the female loggerheads will repeat the same cycle 2-5 more times during the season.

Once the eggs are laid, they have about 60 days until they hatch. One interesting fact is that nest temperature determines a hatchlings gender. Eggs nesting at a temperature at 84.2 Fahrenheit will be female and the cooler ones will be male. Each nest contains eggs of the same gender. Once the hatchlings break through their shell, only about 1 in 100 baby turtles will make it to the ocean and return as an adult 30 years later.

Here are some ways that you can help protect loggerheads and increase their survival rates:

• Turn off any beachfront lights after dark so that hatchlings don’t confuse them with the moonlight when journeying to the ocean

• Use a red beam flashlight when walking the beach at night (white light is distracting and disorienting)

• Flatten sandcastles, fill holes and remove any other obstacles from the beach at the end of the day

• Observe turtle nests from a distance

• Report injured turtles to local organization(s)

If you would like to learn more about loggerhead sea turtles there are many great resources, but my personal favorite is: seaturtlepatrolhhi.org

Level up the fun at Hashtag Gaming Arena!

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT Hashtag Gaming Arena? If not, let me enlighten you about this awesome location right here in Herndon! For our May Stroll Junior Writer Meeting, we were invited to Hashtag Gaming Arena to learn about what they offer the community. places. That led to opening a store that provided novels, games, and experiences.

The meeting started with Drew giving us a tour of the multi-use facility. We gathered in an area that is used for comedy nights, company pitches, and more. Drew told us about how his experiences led to writing. Before opening Hashtag, he worked on films and movies and became interested in the idea of world-building in fiction. He then started to write fantasy novels inspired by many people and

Today, Hashtag Gaming Arena offers board games, video games, books, merchandise, food, and much more! The ambiance is a mix of community and fun, making it a great place for everyone. For all the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) fans, Hashtag has a whole section just for the game. Some D&D products they sell include how-to-play guides and how to create your very own D&D game. They even host regular D&D sessions and workshops for teens, in addition to lots of other video game tournaments, RPG (Role-Playing Game) meetups, and more! There’s a whole wall of popular board games free to use. The gaming area is large and open, with big tables and super-comfortable chairs. There’s something going on nearly every night at Hashtag!

Merchandise areas at Hashtag include a whole aisle full of board games. When Drew was showing us this area, he explained that board games have writers. And often, the success of a game is based on if the story makes sense, is compelling, and fun - all thanks to writers!

And who doesn’t like Funko-Pops? Hashtag also has a whole section dedicated to collectible merchandise. Drew explained how all of the licensed products were a result of writers, just like the games.

Additionally, Hashtag Gaming Arena is hosting a writer’s convention this year. These meets will allow new and seasoned writers to share experiences with one another.

Our meeting wrapped with a special treat: Drew gave everyone a copy of one of his books! Overall, Hashtag Gaming Arena offers so many opportunities, from gaming tournaments to writer meets. Whether you’re a gamer, or writer, Hashtag has it all! So next time you find yourself in Herndon, don’t think twice about visiting this awesome place. When I first heard of Luckett’s Vintage Markets, I was living states away with absolutely no connection to the area. An artist I followed on social media would diligently report on the joys of the Markets each year on her blog, and I would eagerly read through her adventures, scheming about how to rationalize a road trip to Virginia just to attend. All this serves as a cozy backdrop to enjoy an embarrassment of riches in vendors and dealers. It’s a wonderful way to discover local shopkeepers and support your old favorites, as well as take advantage of unique and fantastic stores that travel from states away to set up booths for the event. The merchandise selection is vast, eclectic, and delightful: live topiaries in moss-covered pots, baskets the size of coffee tables, antique shopkeeper counters, chandeliers crafted from upcycled whiskey barrels and so much more.

SPOTTED:

The Market isn’t just for shopping; it’s for socializing too! We caught up with Willowsford neighbors, Stroll sponsors, Conservancy partners, and business colleagues!

One of my favorite things to do (besides all of the luscious shopping) while there is to ask fellow shoppers what their plans are for the treasures they acquire. At one point during this visit I was charmed by a display of a vintage clarinet, snare drum, and pile of plumed marching band hats. Later on, I spied the hats in a woman’s wagon and just had to find out their fate. In this instance, the lady was a proud grandma to six grandchildren, and she is adding the hats to the dressup trunk she’s curating for them!

We met up with Luckett’s PR strategist, Dianne Murphy, and Katie Bacchus Wilson right after grabbing our commemorative totes!

We saw Willowsford resident Jacqueline Jennings and compared notes on our best finds of the day!
Loudoun Market owner and Stroll sponsor Sara Jayne and husband Brad were celebrating Paris in the Spring at their booth!

Even if you end your day at Luckett’s empty-handed (how???), your mind will be brimming full of inspiration for decorating and display, color combinations and styling. All these years later, the magic of Luckett’s Vintage Markets still hasn’t faded for me, which is why I heartily recommend them to anyone who asks about adventures in the area. Lucky for us, the joy of Luckett’s is just at our fingertips!

"I look forward to the Lucketts Spring Market every year. Not only is it one of the biggest craft & vintage market events in the area; the variety of artisans mixed with antique dealers is truly unique. It’s the best event to shop for yourself or others while maybe enjoying some good food and wine!"

Trucks, Tykes, and Tender Hearts

Touch-a-Truck Triumph at Stone Springs!

There was a very special event in Stone Springs Hospital’s parking lot in May. Joshua’s Hands hosted the event called Touch-a-Truck. It was horn-free for kids who may be sensitive to loud noises for the first hour.

Johsua’s Hands is an organization named after Joshua Guthrie, a gymnast who knew the value of working hard. According to Joshua’s Hands’ website, “His hands were calloused from the daily disciplines of his sport and love of woodworking; but his calloused hands were tender with his siblings and in service.” Joshua’s Hands was established in celebration of this amazing young man. They provide life skills to help men and women in our community become self-sufficient.

Joshua’s Hands encourages volunteering with willing hands and servant hearts, to work in worthy projects with tangible outcomes. If you would like to help Joshua’s Hands, volunteers are needed at annual events, such as their Fall Festival, Valiant Warrior Quilting, and the Virginia Touch-A-

Truck. Joshua’s Hands strong motto is, “Extending hands for service and education from grateful hearts…”

Touch-A-Truck, true to its name, allowed kids to climb into vehicles and operate levers, push different buttons, step on pedals, and most importantly, honk the horns. The

first 300 kids who entered received their choice of a toy car! Many kids only see cool big trucks on the road, so this made the event even more fun.

Dulles South and Kirkpatrick Farms Fire Stations (part of the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Department), and the Arcola Volunteer Fire Department brought lots of cool fire vehicles. Law enforcement agencies were represented by Leesburg Police, Loudoun County Sheriff Department, and the Virginia State Police. I personally liked the mobile command post because when you went inside, you could see everywhere around the outside of the vehicle.

The National Capital Region Bomb Squad Working Group had a very cool bomb-detecting robot and a bomb

"Our family knows the high cost of repairing and maintaining your vehicle. My experience gained at a major auto dealership I know to exceed the expectation of each customer that comes through the door, whether for the first time or for a return visit. Let us care for you and your car. " - Mike Hillyard.

sniffing dog named Bolly! The robot had an arm that was used to grab bombs, along with large wheels to go over rough terrain. Bolly is a bomb-sniffing dog that is used to sniff out liquids that could be used to start a fire. Bomb-sniffing dogs can detect around 19,000 different combinations of liquids that can start a fire.

Along the lines of protection, the Secret Service brought The Beast. The Beast is an armored car that was formerly used to carry the Vice President and other very important people. Its outside has many layers of protection and armor. It was very cool to see this special car at this local event.

Other than Bolly, I’ll have to say that food trucks were the highlight of this event for me. Local food trucks from Brusters, Foster’s Grille, and GB’s Grill served very good food to the people attending this event. There was a huge CAT excavator that was towed to the event on a flatbed truck. It was a big hit, as the line was around 40 people long waiting their turn to sit in it. Vulcan came with their cement mixer, Loudoun County Transit brought a Commuter Bus, VDOT attended with their snow plow, and RoadRunner had their big tow truck with the American flag flying on it.

In case you missed this amazing event, be sure to follow their website to find out about next year’s Touch-A-Truck!

WHERE ARE PEOPLE MOVING?

Meet Michelle Perl Stanko and Deborah Perl Davis, the two sisters behind Ask The Sisters That Sell. Together with their mother, Laurie Perl, they make up The Pearl Team. Drawing on their expertise as Realtors, they dive into market-specific topics relevant to Willowsford where Michelle and her family live.

If you’d like to discuss buying, selling or investing, reach out to Michelle at Michelle@thepearlteam.com or 703-568-7868.

Ask The Sisters That Sell

Deborah: Because values in Willowsford are soaring, homeowners have options on where they want to move next.

Michelle: After more than 4 years, office culture is rebounding causing a dynamic shift in residential home ownership. Many people in the area are choosing to relocate inside the beltway while at the same time others are seeking larger homes, more land and solace farther away from city centers.

...you recently found some GREAT investment properties for our clients

Deborah: That’s an interesting thing to consider as more acreage per home is becoming available in the Nokesville and Haymarket areas - up to 10 acres per lot.

Michelle: New home builders like Lennar, Van Metre, Harrington Homes, Maronda Homes, Stanley Martin , D.R. Horton and Toll Brothers are breaking ground in Purcellville, Leesburg and Lovettsville as well.

Deborah: Michelle, you recently found some GREAT for investment properties in Prince William County and Frederick County for our clients.

....if resale is a top priority, we can help you get what you want.

Michelle Yes, some builders are buying down interest rates and investors are seeing returns from day one. I have other clients that want new construction and a smaller HOA. Often times expensive amenities are underused, and the appeal of fewer rules and more privacy are driving factors.

Deborah: And if resale is a top priority, we can help you get what you want even if it’s off the market. My focus on the team is inside the beltway where yours is more outside the beltway. We are always happy to help you set up a search to see what your options may be.

Michelle: Always!
