Hello neighbors and supporting businesses! The Willowsford Board of Directors is excited to provide an update in Stroll Willowsford for the summer months of 2023.
HERE ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS
With summer upon us, we hope that everyone has been enjoying the pools and splash park! Remember you can now make Pavilion and Pool Party Space reservations online. We also are glad that the North and South Willowsford Waves are having another successful 2023 season!
We also have updated the Design Standards, which went into effect by the Design Review Committee (DRC) on June 10th, so please note them if you have an application for an improvement on your lot.
As we have mentioned previously, during the warmer months, there tends to be more outdoor activity, and we ask that you report any suspicious activity in the community. As a reminder, the Loudoun County Sheriff non-emergency number is 703-777-1021. If you note any other questionable activity, such as in the Lodge Gym, please promptly inform our HOA team as well.
We have continued to have several fun Lifestyle programs, as well as Camp Willowsford, and our signature Family Picnic & Fireworks celebration, and our outstanding Culinary events with Chef Emily. Please read the Weekly and check the Willowford Life Facebook page as well as the website calendar for all upcoming events.
We are also planning to coordinate with our sister entity, the Willowsford Conservancy, with their new leadership and Executive Director Sophie Lambert, to align our missions toward continuing the unique Willowsford experience.
As always, please reach out to any of your resident Board or HOA team members with any ideas or concerns.
We look forward to everyone continuing to have a great summer!
Summer is a glorious time of year, but it’s important to remember that it often gives our pets more opportunities to get into trouble outdoors! As always, be sure to consult your veterinarian if you are concerned about your animal’s health.
· Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. Even with the windows cracked or air conditioning running, temperatures can still rise quickly enough to put pets in danger.
· Always make sure your pet has access to clean water and shade outdoors. Be careful not to over-exercise pets and keep them indoors when it’s extremely hot. If your pet is unable to cool down, their internal body temperature may rise to unsafe temperatures, often referred to as a heat stroke. Signs of a heat stroke include excessive panting and drooling, decreased coordination, and unusual gum or tongue color.
· Hot pavement can burn an animal’s paw pads. Keep walks to a minimum when temperatures are extremely high or utilize grassy areas instead. If the pavement is too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your pup!
· Backyard barbeques may create temptations for pets. Not everything humans eat is safe for animals, and allowing your pet to binge on fatty foods puts them at an increased risk of developing pancreatitis. Always keep a watchful eye on your pets, especially near the buffet.
· Fireworks and summer storms can be stressful for our animals. Exposure to lit fireworks can potentially result in severe burns or trauma, and even unlit fireworks can contain hazardous material. Please leave your pets at home when you head out to enjoy Family Picnic & Fireworks at The Lodge!
· Make sure to give your pet his flea, tick, and heartworm preventives. Check your pet for ticks daily and watch for symptoms like fever, swollen joints, lethargy, vomiting, weight loss, bruising, and cough, which may signal a tick- or mosquito-borne illness.
Let your pups run free this summer! Our dog parks feature plenty of grassy open space, rolling hills, and even dog-friendly water fountains. If don’t already have a Willowsford resident dog tag, stop by Sycamore House or The Lodge to get yours today and start enjoying the amenities.

Icannot praise the entire team at Closets By Design enough for their exceptional professionalism. Their representative and fellow Willowsford resident, Aya, has done an incredible job bringing my vision of a perfect closet to life. She effortlessly captured the modern, classy, and luxurious look and feel I had envisioned for my master closet. Aya meticulously explored every option and provided me with a multitude of creative solutions to realize my goal. Her professionalism, along with the dedication of the entire team, truly impressed me as they worked diligently to assist us. Aya said, “Viktorija Piano had a specific vision for her two wall units. With our full customized system, and a team working together to manage the installation time with the counter fabricator, Victoria’s vision was made a reality.”
Collaborating with Matt, the owner of the company and a fellow Willowsford homeowner, was a genuine pleasure. His openness to ideas and unwavering support made the experience even more enjoyable. As someone who is passionate about supporting our local Willowsford business owners, I cannot thank you all enough for everything you have done. I wholeheartedly recommend this incredible company, Closet By Design, to anyone in search of the perfect closet.
The class of 2023 is a class to remember, especially for their proud parents and families. Stroll Willowsford is honored to recognize these fantastic young residents. We wish them a happy and bright future.

Father, gardener, volunteer, and mentor are just a few words that you can use to describe Coach Mike Clements. Have you ever met someone that always offers to do things because they are a kind person? Well, this is Mike Clements. He is a father of Katie (11) and Alexandra (8) and married to Shannon, his college sweetheart. Mike loves to donate his overabundance of summer vegetables to the neighbors, usually leaving the goods on his front porch for all to grab, first-come first-serve.
Over the past few years, Mike has volunteered on the DYS Thunder Basketball board where he oversees elementary girls’ basketball and also as a coach to the Travel Girls 5th-grade team. He is carpool king, picking up and dropping home other teammates every week.
In the community, Mike likes to share any research he has done on products or services and knowledge that may help others. He has a strong interest in Finance and is happy to share thoughts and ideas about how to progress on the path to financial independence. So much so that he started a finance interest page for Willowsford residents.
To have good neighbors, we must also be good neighbors and Mike is an example of what being a good neighbor is all about. He is generous, caring, and kind and that is why he is being honored for being a Notable Neighbor this month.
Stroll Willowsford hosted a Luau-themed family gathering at Old Farm Winery at Hartland for the second year in a row in May. It was the perfect blend of fun and relaxation and an excellent way to begin Mother’s Day weekend!
Attendees were greeted with leis upon arrival and received a ticket for a complimentary glass of wine to get the evening started. Moms also received a ticket for a complimentary “momosa” as well!
Guests enjoyed a buffet from Island Flavourites of jerk chicken, rice and peas, mac ‘n cheese and salad, sponsored in part by Stroll Willowsford Sponsors Capital Trimlight, IMA motorwerke, and Willowsford residentowned Baddpizza.
The slightly warmer temperatures and stunning sunset provided the perfect backdrop as guests played lawn games and enjoyed live acoustic music provided by Old Farm Winery. Jen Travis with Marvelous Mouse Travels added to the fun with a custom selfie station, complete with a tropical backdrop and photo props!
The Ohana School kept kids entertained with crafts, ukelele lessons, Kona Ice, and a visit from Moana, who stole the show with her musical performance!
As the evening drew to a close, giveaways ranging from gift boxes and wine to home decor and even pineapples were distributed, and moms were encouraged to take a fresh flower from dellCor contracting home to enjoy as well.
Ticket proceeds totaling more than $4,500 went to Willowsford resident non-profit The Foundation, on behalf of Women Giving Back. Additionally, the Women Giving Back truck was on hand for donation dropoffs, and The Foundation helped stuff the truck with more than $1,000 worth of diapers!
We can’t wait to see everyone again at our next outdoor family adventure!
2nd annual Luau provides an evening of fun and relaxation for residents!
Book today and treat yourself to less work at Christmas!
Trimlight provides bright, beautiful holiday and year round lighting at night, which is hardly noticeable during the day so the system can be left up all year,

“We were quite honored to be the beneficiary of The Foundation’s Luau. We have provided over 3,000 infants with diapers this year alone. For families struggling to make ends meet each month, the diaper pantry has been a lifeline. The donated diapers and the monetary proceeds from the event will ensure that we can keep up with the increasing needs of our neighbors in need.”
The Conservancy’s canine ambassador!
Calling all animal lovers! Today we have a special edition about the neighborhood’s cutest helper: a dog named Killian. Killian and his owner both work in the conservation program in Willowsford. The Conservancy helps to restore animal populations, build habitats for the local plants and animals, and make sure invasive species don’t take over. Killian is so excited for work in the morning that he runs circles around the car. At 2 1/2 years old this smart pup enjoys meeting new people and learning new things. When Taryn first heard about the young border collie that wouldn’t chase sheep, it was love at first sight. This loving companion has a sweet, lap dog personality. He’s also a good trail guide. Killian’s job is to show new people around the Conservancy. His ability to learn directions and names makes him an even better guide.
Away from work, Killian enjoys playing with water and chasing his disc. He also has an obsession with laser pointers! But if he’s not at home, he’ll be running through the fields with the other dog in the program. Or of course, you can find him at work at the Conservancy office. Killian does so much for this community; stop by the Boathouse sometime and meet this wonderful dog and his amazing owner!

Joining the movement on National Bike to School Day!
THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY HILLYARD AUTOMOTIVEBike To School Day is a national annual event held each year to promote healthy habits, a cleaner environment, and traffic safety. Several neighborhood schools participated this year.
On a spectacular April Friday morning, the Hill School held their first annual Bike to School Day. Students from all grade levels, along with many parents, came out to participate in this unique event. While the students didn’t actually “bike to school” from their homes, the participants all congregated
near the Upper School and rode on a dirt/gravel trail that encircles the gorgeous 140acre campus. While the kids, staff and some parents pedaled their bikes, other parents hiked the almost 2-mile trail, with everyone gathering after the trek at the Lower School for delicious treats prepared by one of the faculty members. A good time was had by all, perhaps summed up best by Madison and Delaney gushing, “we just loved it. We loved getting to ride on the trail, it was so fun. We love Hill” As a family with two rising 1st graders and a junior kindergartener, the sense of community and belonging is one of the many reasons we
have fallen in love with this school. This was one event of many throughout the year which hold true to Hill’s three core values: community, character, and confidence!
Another Bike, Walk or Roll to School event will be held in October; keep an eye out for more information at your local school to participate!
"Our family knows the high cost of repairing and maintaining your vehicle. My experience gained at a major auto dealership I know to exceed the expectation of each customer that comes through the door, whether for the first time or for a return visit. Let us care for you and your car. "
- Mike Hillyard.
I’m a member of the Willowsford Mountain Bike Club, and also a member of the Loudoun County Parks and Recreation board, so my daughter Ella and I decided to join in the fun!
Living in the Grove made for a pleasant ride to the school. Ella enjoys riding her bike. Being able to try out biking to school was very fun and exciting for her. She wants to do it more often now!
Owner, Ted Tidmore, started Holloway Company in 1993 as a landscape design business. Over the last three decades, the Class A Contractor has evolved into a reputable company for a variety of home projects with repeat customers who know first-handedly the quality of Holloway Company’s work. “We have always maintained the highest standards of design, quality, customizability, and professionalism,” says Tidmore. “We pride ourselves in turning the client’s vision into a reality while guiding them toward their dream project with the help of our excellent designers.”
Holloway’s services cover everything under the sun, including patios, decks, pavilions, fireplaces, fire pits, porches, pool houses, garages, basements, and driveways, amongst dozens of other options. “With our skilled masons, carpenters, designers, salesmen, and project managers, there isn’t much we can’t do,” explains Tidmore.
Determining the size and price of the project starts with a client’s phone call followed by a meeting. “The next step is often our site visit, where we begin to gather the dimensions and elevation of the yard, allowing for us to get an accurate assessment as to how much material will be needed, where things can go realistically, as well as what will flow with the layout of the house the best. We continue to work together with our clients throughout the entirety of the design process until we reach a point where our clients are thrilled with the design,” he says.
By asking a few simple questions about the “dream space,” Tidmore says they can determine the perfect design for a customer. The questions help to figure out how the space will be used, and what (if any) focal point or essential
pieces are desired. “We let the client’s vision and existing yard inspire us to maximize the project’s functionality and aesthetic appeal, which gives our clients the best of both worlds,” he explains. “We have consistent, clear, and concise communication throughout the project allowing us to keep our clients up to date on the progress of the project throughout the entirety of our building process.”
Setting Holloway Company apart from similar businesses is their personable feel and thousands of projects completed over the years. “This allows us to provide our clients with the efficiency of a big business, without losing the aspect of individualized attention for each client,” explains Tidmore. “Specializing in everything from patios and decks to pool houses and basements, if you have an idea, we can make it come to life.” Furthermore,
the company also sells furniture to complete outdoor spaces, making the company truly a one-stop shop for customers.
Tidmore says if you want to get a project right the first time, look no further than Holloway Company.
golfing, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. We are sports fans, spanning from the Washington Commanders to the Minnesota Vikings,” he shares about the team. “Our interests are widespread and nearly all-encompassing, but that is what makes Holloway Company such a fun and involved place to work. We love what we do, we love what we design, we love what we build, and we love when our clients are happy.”
The business is proud of its work and has been awarded accordingly, including a half a dozen different awards this year at the North American Deck & Rail Association competition. “If you want less headache, more usable space, and a beautiful project, look no further than Holloway Company. We would love the opportunity to design, build, and furnish your dream project.”
Holloway Company is a tight-knit group made up of friends and family, with many employees with the company since day one. Tidmore says this has essentially turned “friends into family in many cases.” He describes the team as “critical thinkers” who always are looking at ways to make a project better for clients. In their free time, many of them enjoy the outdoors, whether that be a hike or a day at a brewery. “We enjoy playing cornhole,
As a locally owned business, Holloway Company loves to be involved in the community. Holloway sponsors events at several high schools in the area and gives to charities. “As we all know, our clients are not simply clients, they’re our neighbors, our friends, and our family,” says Tidmore. “We have completed dozens of jobs throughout Willowsford with beautiful results. Staying involved in the community is extremely important to us. It isn’t just a job for us, it is a livelihood, and what we do improves the livelihood of others.”
Holloway Company welcomes Willowsford and beyond to their Dulles design showroom located at 42351 Azalea Lane.

“Holloway did a great job with our deck and patio. They were professional and timely. They communicated with us every step of the way so we knew what the current status was and what was coming next. The quality of their work is very good. We’re very pleased with the end result. In fact, we have them lined up to do our next project.”

Junior Writers gallop into volunteering at Sprout!
Sprout Therapeutic Riding and Education Center is a volunteer program dedicated to changing the lives of others through horse-assisted activities. The Junior Writer team got the opportunity to learn all about how Sprout supports others during their May meeting. Humans and animals connect in ways that can touch the soul and serve as a form of comfort. For those dealing with chronic illnesses and struggles, Sprout is there to support them through the help of equine activities. Getting to connect with the horses through riding has helped so many lives, and Sprout’s mission is to do just that.
Currently, Sprout serves around 135 individuals per week, 4,950 hours of client service per year, and 8,997 hours of volunteer service per year. Therapeutic riding, driving, equine movement and therapy, and community services are all activities served by Sprout with the help of equine and therapy professionals. Sprout also allows others to sign up and volunteer, which teaches them important communication and interaction skills. The Junior Writers had the chance to participate in a volunteer project during the meeting by clearing debris from a riding trail. Our team got the chance to visit with several horses during our visit as well. Sprout spreads its services over more than 26 acres of fields to also provide the best care for its horse helpers. “Horses, like people, need care. We try to provide the best conditions for both the horses and people.” If you are interested in helping Sprout continue their mission and to help someone in need, check out the website for more information and programs: https/sproutcenter.org.

When life presents unexpected opportunities, seizing them can lead to remarkable journeys. For the Rivera family, their latest venture was not just a business endeavor but an avenue to shape a brighter future for their youngest daughter, who happens to have Down syndrome. With determination and a desire to create a fulfilling life for their child and give back to their community, they are thrilled to open their new franchise, Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids!
Two years ago, they acquired their franchise but spent over a year searching for the perfect location near their community. They aimed to establish a business that would not only benefit their family but also become a haven of inclusion and belonging for their daughter and others like her. “We see this as a way to set her up for the future. We can see her working at the salon and having a productive and fulfilling adult life” said Alex.
During the soft opening of their salon, they donated 100% of the proceeds to the Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia. This act of goodwill showcased their dedication to both their personal journey and their desire to uplift and support others.
Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids grand opening was a true community event, with the enthusiastic support of local businesses: Chef Emily Worth catered the event, and kids enjoyed balloon animals, visits from Elsa and Spiderman, cookies by Chubby Heart Cookies, cupcakes by The Inventive Baker, and a visit from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and the Arcola Volunteer Fire Department. Says Alex, “The support of our friends and neighbors was and continues to be amazing! Thank you all!”
Inside the salon, located in Dulles off Arcola Mills Drive, fundraiser bins serve as a conduit for ongoing donations. With each haircut, patrons have the opportunity to keep the community spirit going. Moreover, they have established partnerships with local elementary schools, rotating the recipients of their donations every month, beginning with Elaine Thompson Elementary. “We love to be part of and give back to our local community!” said Alex.

our principal of the year!
BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER EVELYN ROSE THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY BEANTREE LEARNING CHANTILLYCongratulations to my principal Mrs. Lori Mercer at Hovatter Elementary, who recently won The Washington Post Principal of the Year for Loudoun County!
I asked Mrs. Peggy Tyree, our school’s Instructional Facilitator of Technology and longtime co-worker of Mrs. Mercer, about the process to be nominated for the award:
The Washington Post Principal of the Year award seeks to recognize principals who go well above their day-to-day demands to create an exceptional educational environment. Each year principals are nominated in their local county nomination process (taken from the Washington Post nomination packet). One principal is selected by a committee from each district or county. From there the winners of each county are nominated for the entire region award. How does a principal win this award?
A nomination packet must be completed for each nominee. The application packet includes letters of recommendation from 5 people. At least one recommender must be a teacher on staff. In Mrs. Mercer’s packet, there were two parents (one from the current Hovatter community and one from
her former school Belmont Station).
Three staff members also wrote letters of recommendation. The packet must also include a resume, a biography and an extensive amount of responses to questions regarding the principal’s leadership.
Over 30 staff members collaborated on the questions and worked to brainstorm all of the qualities which made Mrs. Mercer deserving of this award. The nomination packet was completed and turned in in December. From there we waited and hoped that the county selection committee would choose Mrs. Mercer. Was it hard to keep it a surprise?
Yes and no! It was hard to find time to meet as a committee to work on the question responses without Mrs. Mercer knowing, so we met virtually. After the packet was submitted it was easy to keep it a secret because we just were waiting to hear back from the selection committee.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Mrs. Mercer does not like to be the center of attention and believes that so many of her colleagues are deserving of this recognition. However, our staff felt she is the perfect person to be recognized and emulated.
Mrs. Mercer found out she received the honor at a surprise announcement event after school one day. No one but the committee knew, it was a huge happy surprise for everyone! I sat down with her to get her thoughts after the big news:
What does it feel like to win this award?
I feel very proud and honored. For our whole school, I think it shows the importance of the school community and the value of a team. How will this achievement help or inspire you as you go forward?
The people around me, whether that’s students,
Mrs. Mercer is a really great principal and I’m glad that she won this award. We know at school already that she’s amazing, and now others will know it too!
One of Mrs. Mercer’s favorite quotes is:
I never heard about the White House Egg Roll until I had my son Rowan and a friend mentioned she was going with her family that year. I thought “Cool! I want to take my firstborn and roll the heck outta those eggs on the South Lawn of the White House.”
My husband Russ and I are into local events so I tried to figure out how she scored tickets. When I noticed it was a lottery system, which was open for a week only, I thought WHY NOT? Well, that year I applied, no dice. Nada. Zilch. I got a nice email reply back from Recreation.Gov stating I did not get tickets for the 2016 event.
Since that first lottery entry (and a daughter born 3-1/2 years later) I have entered to try to get tickets for my kids. It always asked me how many adults, which limits it to 2 adults and a max of 6 kids. (I even entered one year thinking of my nieces and nephews being crazy enough to think I could handle bringing 6 kids down to DC, and thinking that goodspirited nature would help me score tickets.) Even with those good intentions of bringing so many kids with me to the event, still, no tickets were won.
As the calendar pages turned to each new year… nothing. It got to the point that at the threeyear mark of trying to get the Easter Roll tickets, I would haphazardly stuff my face with Reese’s Peanut Butter cups and shake my fists in the air while hitting “submit” on the lottery entry page on my computer.
Still, I had hope. Some call this delusion! But for 2023, after the pandemic and for years of trying with NO LUCK, I had a friendly reminder to enter again. The reminder came from my friend Tommy McFly (you can catch him on the local
NBC channel sharing cool happenings in the area) who mentioned on his Facebook page that it’s that time of year to enter. So I thought, “Let this be my last time to enter. I can’t handle this heartache anymore!”
I’m glad I did. Because if it wasn’t for this reminder, it would have been the year I would forget to do it, as my job and kids have kept me super busy and it was not on my radar at all. I saw a “CONGRATULATIONS” email thinking it was spam but thankfully I checked the sender address and saw it was from Recreation.gov. It had my tickets and instructions on where to go and what to expect.
On the big day, we drove into DC with excitement and once we parked had to walk to the entrance noted on the tickets. Once through the security section, we were greeted by a nice volunteer offering my kids their souvenir tote bags. The volunteer also suggested to not spend too much
time in certain sections of the event as the “real good” activities are closer to the White House. Keeping that in mind while walking through the first few sections, then we saw the tent with SNACKS. Obviously, we hightailed it to that section! There were plenty of options to choose from; some individual bite-sized sandwiches, sushi rolls, sides, and plenty of water bottle carts.
Once we had a renewed energy, we walked toward the White House where the live music was amped up and the vibe of the egg hunt was more apparent. We decided to try the egg roll activity first, and got some great pics and videos of my son Rowan and my daughter Lyra rolling eggs. From there, we had our choice of taking pics with multiple Instagram-worthy background opportunities, visiting lots of kids’ tv show characters walking around, listening to authors reading their books in the reading
nook, playing in the School House Activity Area, watching a Talent Show, exploring Field Trip to the Farm and Physical “Eggucation” activities, and so much more.
But as we tried to figure out what to do next, a volunteer mentioned POTUS will be addressing the crowd. So we hung around the area we just completed and were glad we did as we were up close to see and hear POTUS AND FLOTUS address the crowd!
So if you’re like me, after years of trying, and you think you’ve given up all hope… maybe just maybe… try one more time. You just never know. Maybe this reminder for you all for the 2024 event could be YOUR good luck charm to get tickets. And if you do happen to win tickets there is so much to enjoy. Just don’t throw the eggs down the roll lanes like my 7-year-old son did...I believe he single-handedly contributed to the egg shortage trying to cross that finish line!
You will often hear Willowsford residents, Jeff and Ebone’ Granger, co-owners of Granger Financial, repeat the infamous quote by Ray Lewis, “Success is one thing, Impact is another!” The couple is diligent about living a life of significance and helping those around them do the same.
In July of 2022, we hosted our first annual Free Basketball Skills Clinic at John Champe High School to help raise awareness and donations for Mobile Hope. The “Hoop for Hope” event received loads of donations from our amazing Willowsford Community for Mobile Hope; a local non-profit organization that provides emergency shelter and support to at-risk youth up to age 24.
Last year’s camp brought so much energy and joy; Jeff Granger Sr. had the K-5 group working so hard but it was the girls who took the cake! “The
girls showed up to this camp ready to win and won the MVP of the camp!” All of the kids were so focused and eager to lead; it was simply impressive!
Over 65 children, ages 5-18 received Granger Financial Swag bags, T-shirts, and free skills training by coaches from all levels ranging from collegiate players to retired pro, Jeff Granger, Sr. There was also a surprise guest, Al-Quadin Muhammad, a former defensive end for the Indianapolis Colts. Jeff and his team of coaches brought tons of energy, passion, and fun, resulting in a great day for the youth of Willowsford.
If you missed last year’s amazing event, you won’t want to miss out on this year’s event. Hoop for Hope 2023 will take place on Saturday, July 15th; location and time TBD. Be sure to look out for more information as the date draws near! We hope to see you there!
Students at Academies of Loudoun and Willowsford residents Lauren and Suhani have gone above and beyond. Academies of Loudoun is a high school that trains students in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and offers a wide range of programs. The Academies, which opened in August 2018, is made up of the Academy of Science, Academy of Engineering and Technology, and the Monroe Advanced Technical Academy. Lauren Cook, a student at the Academies within its Entrepreneurship program, has been working all year with her team to create a product called the Halo Case. As a part of their entrepreneurship class, they were assigned to create a product that would work as a solution to a problem of their choosing. With this idea in mind, Lauren, Suhani, Pranati, and Gabbie realized they shared a common problem as busy athletes: losing and tangling their jewelry. With the help of design students at the Academies, they were able to 3D print a prototype and start their journey.
The Halo Case is a jewelry compartment for people on the go. It’s a durable, circular case with compartments inside designed to separately fit necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings, and even watches. Cook’s team has created a fully functional website where others can learn more about their product and preorder. The team has been working on social
media to promote their design for their class and has even attended events like the maker showcase for the Academies and a Girl Scout troop event for women in business. The group has been working to enter a competition called National Summit in which they get an opportunity to attend an expo for an entrepreneurship program and earn scholarship money. Within these amazing accomplishments, the group has been able to learn about business and marketing as well as expand their interests in entrepreneurship. “We really love any support that people give us on our Instagram and website, because we’ve been working to bring awareness and empower girls in sports,” Cook explains.
Do you need a vacation? Somewhere where you can enjoy no matter what?
Well, you’re in luck. The Dominican Republic is a beautiful country in the Caribbean that has many different and unique attractions for all ages. From beaches to water excursions, the Dominican Republic has it all. One specific town in the Dominican Republic is Punta Cana, a gorgeous region with beaches on the coast and other activities on land such as rock climbing, ziplining, hiking, and many other fun experiences. I went to Punta Cana in January of 2023 and I had the time of my life. Each day was a new experience and discovery.
First, my hotel was all-inclusive which meant I could do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted for free!
The name of my hotel was Hyatt Ziva, however, there is a couples’ resort next door called Hyatt Zilara. Some of the things I was able to do at the resort were relaxing in the huge pool while having a drink from the pool bar Spiritz, and
taking a dip in the hot tub. Furthermore, the resort was built on the beach so we had easy access to it every day. And lastly, there were so many good restaurants that were in the resort! A few were Tempest Table, Prontoz, El Mercado, Noodle & Thread, and The Chinola. Each one of these restaurants was delicious and there were so many options for vegans and vegetarians. However, that’s not all. The resort had a waterpark with pools and waterslides and features for all ages, including food trucks, water tubes, and a lazy river. Additionally, on our final day in Punta Cana, we enjoyed a fun-filled excursion at the Scape Park at Cap Cana. From ziplining on high mountains and into water, to diving in the Hoyo Azul, the Scape Park kept us entertained as well as made positive memories for my family. Our pictures don’t do justice but will definitely give you a glimpse of this spectacular place and all the things it has to offer. All in all, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is a great spot for your next vacation with many activities to do. Also, I highly recommend booking your stay through Hyatt Ziva or Hyatt Zilara to make the best of your vacation.
Abusiness can have a great product or service, but without proper branding, its reach can fall flat. In a social media-focused world, every brand requires strategic photographs and videos to accurately reflect what it represents. Fortunately, Willowsford residents have Darlene’s Photography to take their visual presence to the next level.
“We specialize in creating visual content specifically tailored to represent a brand’s identity, values, and products or services,” says Darlene Shenier. “We work to understand a client’s brand identity to better tailor their photographs to their unique business needs. We are focused on research-based sales-driven content that helps you stand out among the masses. Many times, clients know they need branding photography, but they don’t know exactly what kind of photos they need and that is where we come in and help,” she adds.
Working with Darlene eliminates the guesswork and saves clients time and money. “What sets us apart is helping clients get clear on their voice, their target audience, how they want their story to be told, and how we can do that creatively,” she says. Through a series of questions, Darlene discovers a client’s audience, what message they wish to convey, and what business values are at their core. From there, she’s able to tell a client’s story that will resonate with their target audience.
If you are wondering if branding photography is for you, the simple answer is yes. Branding photography is for individuals, entrepreneurs, small businesses, nonprofits, and all types of creative professionals. A branding session is different from a family portrait session or engagement session. Branding photography requires a significant shift in your mindset because it is much more
methodical, and strategy-based and less show-up and shoot whatever is in front of you.
Having branded photographs, means you’re keeping a cohesive brand personality in all forms of advertising, including social channels. The goal of branding is to align how you want your business to be seen with how
your audience perceives your business. You want to evoke a particular emotion in your target audience and associate your brand with that feeling and message. Branding builds loyalty and establishes trust (think about the brands you are loyal to and why!).
In addition to images and videography, Darlene offers social media management services. She’ll discuss goals, aesthetics, and strategy for posting to social media to turn followers into paying customers. She says she commonly has customers reach out feeling overwhelmed with having to do it all. When this happens, she’ll discuss their goals and come up with a strategic plan on how photography and videography can help them and offer her social media management services to them. Darlene says she always reminds clients that it’s about quality not quantity on social media.
When it’s time to get in front of the camera, Darlene guides clients through posing and makes them feel comfortable. She turns what can be a nerve-wracking experience into a fun time! Having years of experience under her belt helps Darlene achieve flawless photoshoots. “I’ve been a photographer for the last 10 years; however, I’ve had a camera in my hand since I was a young teenager. I do it because it’s fun and because I like to make people feel good and confident. I worked in the corporate world for 15 years before I decided to leave and run my photography business full-time. That corporate and now entrepreneurial experience are skills that I melded together and can now bring to my clients,” she explains.
Darlene lived in Las Vegas for 20 years before moving to Virginia. Most of her family is still there so she visits often. She’s married to her husband of 18 years, Mike, and she has a 25-year-old son named Robert. “He’s a musician and is shy and quiet but when he hits the stage, he is outgoing and entertaining,” shares Darlene. “My daughter Karina is 9 and is funny, witty, and loves animals. We have six chickens, two goats (Fred and Ginger), two dogs (Penny and Pepper) three fish, and one gecko named Gecks.” In her downtime, Darlene says you can find her spending quality time with family and friends, traveling, or training for races, such as half marathons.
If Darlene Photography rings a bell for you, there’s a good chance you already met as a Willowsford resident. Darlene got to know Willowsford families during Covid when she captured families on their front porches for Stroll. “I captured 90+ family photos as families stepped outside their front door.Immediately I felt a sense of community that I’d never experienced before. The people in Willowsford do family, work, and fun really well and you can’t help but want to be a part of that,” she exclaims. “I’ve gotten to know so many of the incredible people in the community through networking events, family photo shoots, and headshot sessions and I’m so fortunate to have had the opportunity to do so!” Darlene is also the staff event photographer for Stroll Willowsford as well as the staff social media manager.

Darlene also believes in giving back and supporting local non-profit organizations. Recently she worked with New Hope Housing out of Alexandria, VA. The non-profit works towards providing housing for the homeless and ultimately end the cycle of homelessness. It was a 2-day fundraiser where participants rappelled 14 stories down the side of the Hilton National Landing Hotel. She provided them with photography and videography services for their event and social media management services as well. The event raised over $100,000 and Darlene and her team rappelled down after raising $1,000 for New Hope Housing.
I wholeheartedly believe in a healthy lifestyle because I have experienced firsthand the incredible benefits it brings to both the mind and body. By prioritizing proper nutrition, sleep, exercise, mindset, surroundings, and finances, then you can absolutely 100% perform and serve greater for those around you.I strive to be an example, inspiring others to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.
Maintaining my fitness is an important part of my life. I work out at Burn Boot Camp South Riding and I love it so much. Burn Boot Camp has amazing trainers who love on and impact the members of that community. The members have become like family, supporting and holding each other accountable with unwavering determination.
In terms of nutrition, I follow Dr. Wayne Andersen’s Healthy Habits Program. This program has been a tremendous help in shaping my mindset around food, sleep, hydration, surroundings, and energy. It has provided me with the tools I need to maintain a balanced and healthy diet.
Balancing a healthy lifestyle while taking care of my family has become a permanent habit. My husband and I are committed to being an example for our children. We make time to meal prep for the week with nutritious food, ensure we get seven-plus hours of sleep each night, take mental breaks from the demands of work and life, enjoy family bike rides or walks, and drink the right amount of water daily.
For those looking to start living a healthy lifestyle, my advice is simple: just start! The only thing holding you back is yourself. Overcome any negative thoughts or self-doubt, and take small, steady steps towards your goals. Remember, these habits will become a part of your life in the long run.
One crucial aspect of maintaining a healthy lifestyle is surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals who also aspire to be the best versions of themselves, mind and body. Be around those who will help guide, motivate, and cheer you on to keep going after your goals in health whatever they may be.
The Willowsford community, particularly the lifelong friendships I have forged here, has played an integral role in my journey. Surrounded by individuals who share a deep commitment to health and well-being, I have found the encouragement and inspiration needed to keep pushing forward. Together, we celebrate each other’s successes and provide unwavering support through the inevitable challenges.
Whether you choose to join Burn Boot Camp or embark on your own path to well-being, I encourage you to take that first step toward a healthier, more fulfilling future.
It was another successful bi-monthly Stroll Coffee & Connections event on Thursday, May 18, hosted by Stroll Willowsford sponsor Fortify Chiropractic & Sports Rehab in Chantilly. Attendees had the opportunity to connect personally and professionally with fellow residents and Stroll Willowsford sponsors.
Our skilled Corporate Events eMCee & Pro Facilitator, Erica P. Rowe, fostered meaningful conversations and valuable networking. Proceeds from the tickets sales for the event were donated to the Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter
(LAWS). The event showcased the power of community and the potential for new connections to open doors and create opportunities.
Many thanks to Dr. Chris Grivas of Fortify for hosting the event, providing a delicious breakfast, and sharing his goal of empowering patients to understand what is causing their pain or limiting their mobility to prevent recurring issues.
Coffee & Connections are bi-monthly events hosted by Stroll Willowsford and are open to all Willowsford residents and Stroll Willowsford sponsors. Our next Stroll Coffee & Connections is scheduled this month on Thursday, July 20 at the Sycamore House, and will be hosted by Willowsford residents, Javier Soto and Dave Libbares. Quinn Ames Ramsey was born on Sept 28, 2022 at 5:55pm weighing 8 lbs 14 oz, joining brothers Wayne (18), Ben (16) and sisters Charlie and Elliot (both 6). While in utero Quinn was such a shy baby that he seemed to know when the sonogram was on him and he kept turning his face. It was several months before we actually got a good look at him. And, like most of us Ramseys, he was a big boy. We knew he’d come early and joked that he’ll probably come out walking and drive us all home.
Being the fifth child and born at 5:55pm, the name Quinn suits him perfectly. He’s a lucky boy to have two teenage older brothers, Wayne and Ben, to look up to, and even luckier that Wayne is going to college at NC State in the fall so he can slide into his soon-to-bevacant room. Quinn’s older sisters, Charlie and Elliot, are completely enamored with their little brother. With just a 6-year age difference between the girls and Quinn he gets the benefit of extra playtime and snuggles whenever he wants. Dad Scott is looking forward to having a buddy to watch the New York Giants with, and Mom Sarah is excited to have a budding artist to create masterpieces with.
After we had the girls we thought our family was complete. But time and time again we kept feeling
like someone was missing, and eventually made the decision to have a fifth child. We couldn’t be happier that we did. Quinn fits so perfectly into our family and with the rest of our children and we can’t imagine life without him. The only issue now is making sure we don’t spoil our little guy too much!
Have you welcomed a new addition to your family? Email Billie.rose@strollmag.com to have them featured as a Little Stroller, and they’ll receive a special Stroll onesie, too!
