Hello, Willowsford Community residents,
February is synonymous with love. Let’s all celebrate this month by showing extra love to those around us — our families, our friends and our neighbors — and, even more importantly, ourselves!
Speaking of love for your neighbors, I hope as you read through this issue of Stroll Willowsford that you feel even more connected to your neighbors and your community, which is SW’s entire mission. It’s all about #UnityOfCommunity. We hope you find something to inspire, inform, educate, enlighten or just bring a smile to your face in each and every issue!
It’s our dedicated local businesses, many of whom are your own neighbors or have come recommended by you, that make Stroll Willowsford possible. Our sponsors invest in the Willowsford community through SW to earn your trust, your business and your referrals! Please make our SW sponsors a choice whenever you need a product or service; please thank them for supporting you and your community, and please DM your sponsor testimonials or fill out a quick form at https://bit.ly/StrollWFTestimonial. (For the latter, anyone who provides a sponsor testimonial each month will have an opportunity to win a $100 SW VISA gift card!)
As always, don’t hesitate to reach out if you would like to share your stories or your photos with your community. Make sure you are taking advantage of SW’s 24/7 resources by joining our exclusive resident group on Facebook,
following our Facebook and Instagram public pages, and signing up for our monthly e-newsletter at https://bit.ly/StrollWMailingList.
Finally, this would be a perfect month to send in a nomination for one of your neighbors to receive the designated SW Non Sibi Resident Award and special feature this year! Email SW’s publication manager, Billie Rose, at billie.rose@ n2co.com, with your neighbor that should be recognized for doing things for others and your community. SW sponsor The Virginia Institute will not only award a $500 gift card to each nominee, but all residents nominating a neighbor will receive a special thank you as well!
To love, good health and happiness!
Best,

By the time you read this, we will know if the groundhog saw his shadow or if we can look forward to an early spring. Either way, 2023 is sure to be an eventful year! For starters, next month, you will elect two new board members. Special thanks to Mike Russiello and Frank Blackstone for their years of service on the board! Both of their seats are up for grabs this year. Please make sure to attend Meet the Candidates night at The Lodge on Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m. Candidates will make a short presentation about themselves, what they hope to contribute to the community, and will be available for questions. Online voting information will be sent shortly after, and results will be announced at the annual meeting on March 23.
Another important endeavor this year is developing a formal strategic plan. In 2022, the Conservancy collected feedback from residents and, through extensive research, created their strategic plan. The HOA process will be similar with the board of directors, staff and Strategic Planning Committee working together. Once developed, the strategic plan will determine the vision going forward and establish specific goals and objectives to uphold the vision in the short and long term. We are excited to see how the strategic plan will help shape the future of Willowsford!
One of the most exciting ventures this year is a project to improve playgrounds within the community, which has been led by the Playground Improvement Committee. These residents have been working for months reviewing each area and soliciting resident input to recommend to the board what equipment should be added, removed or just spruced up a little while staying within the capital improvement budget established by the board. We can’t wait for you to see the results and will provide more information over the next few months.
Finally, we hope you can attend some of the spectacular events our Lifestyle Team has planned for you this year! Check out the following pages for more information.

STAY TUNED TO THE WILLOWSFORD WEEKLYS TO DISCOVER THE MANY LIFESTYLE PROGRAMS AND CULINARY OFFERINGS WE HAVE IN STORE FOR YOU THIS SEASON. WE HOPE TO SEE YOU AT AN EVENT SOON!
Pink and red hearts are out, Frank Sinatra is on the radio and love is in the air — it’s the season of love. This year, our Willowsford Conservancy offers you a different spin on Valentine’s Day and encourages you to take time out for nature this holiday, especially with someone you love.
Living in an Agrihood provides you and your family the amenity of 40 miles of trails, where you can enjoy the beauty of nature while spending quality time with those special people in your life. Here are seven ways to show nature a little love while making your outdoor Valentine’s Day outing more fun.
• Explore our recently completed Pinewoods Loop, with its accessibility features, with your special someone.
• Gather a blanket and enjoy your favorite desserts while you star gaze at Hidden Meadow.
• Purchase a Flower CSA Share for your loved ones, friends and neighbors, or even treat yourself.
• Practice trail stewardship during your next hike by clearing the trail of sticks, limbs and rocks.
• Plant a native plant at your house (inside or outside).
• Stay on the trail to prevent soil erosion. Keeping on the path will keep you safe from disturbing winter habitats.
• Spend quality time with the ones you love. Gather your family, friends and neighbors to hike with you this month by walking the Grange Loop.
Amidst all the glitter and candy surrounding Valentine’s Day, we hope you pause to remember why you love nature, hiking and the Willowsford community.
"I have been utilizing American Livery Link for approximately three years and I’ve had an outstanding experience each and every time! Taz delivers a fantastic and reliable experience at an affordable rate consistently! His team is incredibly organized, punctual, polite, and immensely considerate of their clients’ needs. My family and I have utilized their services for trips to ballgames, concerts, performances, dinners, and parties."
Each month, Stroll Willowsford is proud to showcase this meaningful feature that highlights one truly deserving resident with the honor of being our “Resident Non Sibi.” Non sibi is a Latin term meaning “not for oneself,” and it represents the ability to live a life filled with positive energy and concern for others. When Max Harwell was nominated for this month’s non sibi recognition, we asked his wife, Gigi, to tell us more about his efforts.
When Max retired from Raytheon (after 38 years), he and his wife, Gigi, moved to Willowsford from Herndon. He decided he wanted to volunteer in some capacity to support the community. He first volunteered for the Conservancy, where he walked the trails and noted things that needed to be addressed by the Conservancy.
He later signed up to see what the Design Review Committee (DRC) was about and shortly after was selected to be a part of the committee. The HOA had implemented a guideline that the DRC had to have one person on the committee to be the head chairperson. The committee selected Max to be the chairperson because of his knowledge and dedication to the committee. He enjoys working with all the committee members and HOA employees to better the community. They all have a great working relationship and enjoy working together. Max enjoys working with
the residents to help them get their projects approved. Since being on the committee, he has reviewed thousands of applications with a high approval rate. He also is a member of the Covenants Committee, which reviews and makes suggestions on resident issues.
When Max and Gigi moved to Willowsford, they joined the Social Club. When the chairperson moved, he suggested that Max take over, so in true Max fashion, he did. He coordinates the social dates with Willowsford, sends out invites to members and finds residents to host each event.
Max has also been a volunteer, along with his wife, at the Extravaganza and Autumn Fest. Twice a month, he
volunteers at the Willowsford farm washing eggs. He enjoys meeting the farmers and learning about the farm.
Even though Max no longer lives in Herndon, he still volunteers his time there. When his children were younger, he helped coach their soccer teams. Max has volunteered for the Herndon Woman’s Club, which Gigi is a member of, on numerous occasions. He has also been a volunteer at Herndon’s Friday Night Live Concert series from May through August every Friday. He donates food every other month to the Dulles South Food Pantry through the Simple Gesture program.
Max and Gigi have four children and seven grandchildren, who all live in the area. He is always doing things for his children and grandchildren. He helps his grandchildren with their homework, takes them to their extracurricular activities and babysits for them often. He tries not to miss their school events, dance competitions and baseball games. He has always been very active with his children and grandchildren, in addition to his dedication to the community.
Do you know somebody who consistently puts others before themselves and supports others in need, whether large or small, but often flies under the radar? To nominate a fellow neighbor for this honor, send an email to Billie.Rose@n2co.com.
If you’re looking for Viktorija Piano, you’ll likely find her showing a home to a potential buyer or getting the next listing ready to sell. Founder and owner of The Piano Home Group, a luxury real estate company right here in Willowsford, the energetic Viktorija got into real estate by way of a career in sales which she started when she was only 18 years old in her native country of Croatia. Her passion for design and marketing is obvious as she incorporates cutting-edge technology and powerful promotion strategies in her listings. Over 25 years in sales taught her to be a tough and very skilled negotiator. She even stars in her own marketing videos, always as impeccably put together as the houses she’s showing. Viktorija’s hard work ethic has earned her multiple prestigious awards, including Washingtonian’s Top Agent Awards, Top 200 KW Luxury Agents Nationwide, Top 5% in The U.S. Homesnap Award, Best of 2022 Reston local business and more. Her proudest accolades come from her community involvement, earning the 2021 KW Cares Top Award for helping families in need, as well as supporting local schools, athletic clubs and sponsoring interns.
Viktorija’s husband, Eric Hilgartner, is a fellow entrepreneur who’s not afraid to take chances. During the pandemic, Eric leveraged
his background in value-added agricultural products to start making artisan cheese. He teamed up with a business partner to resurrect an abandoned creamery site near Upperville and opened Village Cheeseworks. Far from being just two guys with a milk truck and a dream, the full-scale creamery was soon turning out fine cow’s milk cheeses that have fans at wineries, farmers markets, farm stores and agricultural cooperatives around Loudoun County and beyond.
Viktorija and Eric’s biggest focus are their two kids. Anna is a freshman in college, and
Owen is a kindergartner. “Both are incredibly kind kids with a witty sense of humor and an aptitude for music, travel and languages,” says Mom. “Despite their age difference, both agree that our good neighbors, the walking trails and the Willowsford pools are the best features of our neighborhood. The zip line has also been a big hit.” Owen loves his family, art, science, piano and jiujitsu, and describes his family as “funny, hard-working and happy.” Anna is working toward medical school, with her eye on a career in pediatrics. “She loves her family, friends and her freedom. Dance gives her superpowers,” laughed her stepdad, Eric. She describes her family as “present-minded, hardworking and humorous.”
Luna is the family’s sweet, well-mannered canine. Eric explained, “We did the dog version of Ancestry. com testing, which 30% of the time is 100% accurate, and it turns out her mother was a coyote and her father was a dingo. She likes to watch over our family and lives to play fetch.” There are also two guinea pigs that reside in Owen’s room, keeping him filled with joy and entertainment with their antics.
Despite their public-facing careers, Eric and Viktorija agree that as a family, they tend to be very private. “Our best times are simply spending quiet time at home cooking or doing projects together,” Viktorija said. In three words, she describes the family as “kind, thoughtful and passionate.” Eric’s words are, “To me, perfect.”
“We are big travelers; it comes easily to us,” Viktorija said. “We take frequent spontaneous trips to go experience someplace new. All of us enjoy food and culture, history, museums, live performances and world traditions. We like exploring little places and meeting locals wherever we go. Good food and good people give us so much pleasure.”
It would be tough for the family to pick a favorite trip, but Salzburg, Austria, and Dubrovnik, Croatia, are the top two, with the Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini and the Amalfi Coast of Italy close behind. “One thing these places have in common is superb food, service, kind people and visual beauty,” Viktorija said. “The world’s history has left traces of so many people here before us — their architecture is everywhere around you. The ancient Greeks, Romans, Ottoman, the Byzantine Empire and the numerous crusades paint such a beautiful canvas. The blend of cultures makes it a magical place. We are simply in love with the world and the many kind people we’ve met.”
“I’ll never forget my daughter’s words while traveling when she was 11 years old: ‘Mom, I love it so much here my stomach hurts. Thank you so much, Mom, for taking me with you.” She said this with so much love, warmth and the way she looked at me, I’ll never forget it. I then realized how important it is to show our kids what’s out there — other kids, languages and cultures, different food and traditions than ours, beautiful places, rivers, mountains and skies.”
We love Goose Creet Vet. Dr. Fortier takes the time to know each of her animal patients and their families which is a gift for everyone. The staff is always welcoming and friendly, the office is always clean. My dogs love going to Goose Creek and we are so happy to have found them!”

Many people ask me when I talk about my bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) experience: “Why did I start offering them?” The second question is always, “Women have testosterone?”
I started looking into offering BHRT in my practice about five years ago, but I needed to learn everything I could before I offered it to my patients. Around that time, my sister called me and asked, “Am I a difficult person to be around?” I saw this as an opportunity (thankfully, it was over the phone, so I could hang up if needed). I said, “Yes. Sometimes it is very hard talking to you without you getting defensive.” She openly asked, “What
should I do?” I advised her to look at a company that offered BHRT, and I saw the transformation right in front of my face. Not only was she easier to talk to, but her body changed over the course of two years. She lost fat and built muscle without much effort. I was genuinely impressed at how far she had come.
Fast forward to 2020. You must take board exams every 10 years to maintain your certification as a physician.
BY RESIDENT KAJAL ROY, M.D.I was sitting at my kitchen table studying (my kids were 9 and 10 at the time, and they knew not to be loud or disturb me). I found myself unable to focus for more than 5 minutes. My mind went down this rabbit hole of what could be happening to me. I would read a paragraph, get up, do things in the kitchen or fold laundry. To only come back to my books and have no clue as to what I read.
Something was not right! I sat there thinking that 10 years ago, I delivered my first child at the end of June and took my board exam at the beginning of August. I studied on the couch with my newborn in my lap and my books at my side and flew through the material without a problem. I have been practicing medicine for the last 10 years, every single day! Why is this so hard?
I went to see my doctor and will never forget her question. Do you meditate? Meditation can help many things, such as anxiety and focus, but that is a long-term solution. I needed something NOW! I smiled and said no, and then I left.
My silver lining for the COVID-19 pandemic was that the board of medicine stated I would not be able to take my exam, and they extended my certification until the following year. That gave me time to figure out what the heck was wrong with me. Finally, I checked my bloodwork, including hormone levels (testosterone is rarely checked in women). I found that my testosterone level was near zero. At that moment, with the numbers right in front of my face, I decided I needed to do something about my testosterone levels. I got my first set of pellets in 2021, and about seven to 10 days after, I noticed some remarkable changes. My focus was razor sharp; I could sit and knock out tasks, read for hours and understand and manipulate the information. Oh, and I passed my exam!
I also noticed that I had the energy to do things. Not hopped up on coffee energy, but just able and wanting to do more each day. Another positive my husband would tell you is that my libido is back. I didn’t realize it went somewhere. I have been on BHRT ever since and have now noticed the changes in my body. I can easily build muscle and lose fat (when I try). Before, I would gain 10 pounds just by looking at a candy bar. Now I only gain if I actually eat it.
Many women say to me that they didn’t realize that we need testosterone too. Yes, both men and women produce testosterone and estrogen. New evidence shows that women between the ages of 20-40 start losing their testosterone by 50% PER year. Men lose their testosterone by 1-3% annually between ages 30-70. Optimization of testosterone helps rebuild muscle mass (think stronger hips and shoulders as we age), improve bone density by 8% per year (bye-bye hip fractures), and increase focus, mental clarity, libido and performance. Testosterone decreases brain fog, depression, anxiety and risk for heart attacks, strokes and Alzheimer’s.
BHRT pellets last three to four months in women and up to five to six months for men. They are inserted under the skin, at which time blood vessels grow around them. As your heart rate increases, blood flow through those vessels increase (i.e., working out, stress, anxiety), and more hormone is released. When you sleep and your heart rate decreases, less hormone is released. This simulates precisely how your body would naturally respond. I struggled to write this article as my pellets were wearing off. I got another set of pellets three days ago and have written this article in less than an hour. It has been a game-changer.
Every year, Willowsford offers a Gingerbread Workshop for kids right before the holidays. This year, it was held during Winter Wonderland Weekend at the Sycamore House. One big change this year is that you could choose a premade house with walls already glued together. After assembling and attaching the roof and chimney, participants could visit the candy buffet to get options like vanilla Tootsie Rolls, gumballs, gumdrops, M&Ms and Christmas candy corn to decorate their houses. Chef Emily did a great job putting it all together!
Gingerbread decorating wasn’t the only thing to do during the visit. The whole weekend, kids and families could go outside and do a flag scavenger hunt for prizes. There was also a sleigh parked in the garden that you could pose on for pictures, and cocoa was served on the patio. In the kitchen, the Conservancy offered pinecone birdseed feeder crafts to make and take home. There was also a variety of holiday crafts to make in the dance studio, and live music and singers throughout the day. You could even visit Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus while you were there! It was a festive weekend full of fun!
Holidays, sports parties and daily foot traffic can leave your carpet not looking its best. If you’re nodding yes, it may be time to consider hiring a professional company to refresh and bring to life your carpet again. After all, carpet is a hefty investment and needs to be handled with care to prolong its use.
Fortunately, there’s a reliable company that’s locally owned and operated that also cleans beyond carpets. Mighty Clean Carpet Care prides itself on having professionally trained and friendly technicians. In addition to carpet care, Mighty Clean effectively deep cleans floors and upholstery to remove the most soil, bacteria and allergens. “Our courteous team strives to provide the most outstanding service by showing up on time, using the best cleaning systems, environmentally safe cleaners, and all of our services are covered by a 100% satisfaction money-back guarantee,” said President of Mighty Clean Carpet Care Kevin Flynn.
The company’s trucks are stocked with over 40 different cleaning detergents to customize cleaning solutions to the construction of the items in need of cleaning and the type of soil and stains that need to be removed, explained Flynn. The truck can produce heat beyond 250 degrees. Furthermore, the technicians bring all the water with them, so the customer doesn’t get a hefty water bill. “While some companies may have truck-mounted systems, we use a
rotary extraction wand (rotovac 360) instead of a manual scrub wand,” he said. The rotovac provides a deeper clean and more uniform results.
In addition to cleaning, Mighty Clean also stretches carpets. “We bring in a mechanical machine to get the tightest possible stretch to remove buckles and ripples in the carpet,” said Flynn. “Some companies simply use a knee kicker, but the buckles often return when this method is employed. We also repair and patch permanent stains and pet damage.”
The techs can also restore grout and tile to the beauty you remember but haven’t seen in a long time. “We select the correct cleaner for your man-made or natural stone tile,” said Flynn. “We then turn the pressure of our cleaning solution about 1,000 psi to power wash the tile, but the water is enclosed in a vacuum tool, so all the water and dirt are
brought back to our truck. We can then seal the tile and grout after cleaning.”
Much like tile and grout, laminate and vinyl also can be treated but require a softer cleaner. For this reason, dealing with a professional who handles each customer’s unique needs can minimize disappointment and costs.
But how about furniture? Upholstery can also benefit from a cleaning, whether it’s your antique silk chairs or your family room microfiber sectional. Flynn said technicians can educate customers on what they may expect before treating each piece. A customer will never be left surprised or disappointed when working with Mighty Clean.
Area rugs also commonly require attention, whether from human or pet traffic. The company treats wool, silk and synthetic. The cleaning can be done in your home, or the technician can transport it to the warehouse to give the rug a deep scrub and bath. “We can also tell you if it is worth the added expense for implant cleaning versus on-site,” said Flynn.
Here are a few solid reasons for choosing to have all your customized cleaning done with Mighty Clean. To start, the company has over 15 years of experience. “We can clean anything,” said Flynn confidently. Furthermore, Mighty Clean can even save you money by coming up with creative ideas to eliminate unnecessary spending. “We were able to remove a synthetic dye stain from a marble vanity top by creating a poultice mixed with a Kool-Aid stain remover,” Flynn gave as an example.
Customers who want to schedule with Mighty Clean can do so by calling or emailing them. When doing so, Flynn said, “You can expect us to give you a good price range for the services at this time.” Mighty Clean creates prices based by the square foot. With the actual appointment, customers will have a one-hour window with the day and time they select. The technician will then call the customer when they are 30 minutes out. “We will leave everything we touch cleaner than how we found it. If for any reason you have any concerns with our cleaning service, we will rush back to make it right,” said Flynn. “If you are still unimpressed, we will refund your cleaning, no questions asked.”

Flynn grew up in Centreville, where he attended elementary school through high school. He then played football for Salisbury University and studied economics. It was at this time that he met his beautiful wife and ended up moving to the Virginia Run community. They have two sons and enjoy the outdoors together. The family loves to fish, kayak and boat on the upper and lower Potomac River. “We have an RV and enjoy camping. We travel up and down the East Coast looking for the best state parks,” said Flynn. Their family also competes at a national level for archery.

Sometimes, all it takes is a small remodeling project to completely reinvent a space. Christy Mason, who owns a K Hovanian with an Avandale floor plan in the Grange, had been living in their home for seven years when she decided a spot in the kitchen needed an overhaul. “The knee wall really broke up the space and was a catch-all for mail, papers and general clutter,” she said. “We also don’t have a lot of useable counter space, so we thought a place to put the coffee items would work well for us.”
They used a local contractor to knock down the knee wall and create a coffee bar area between their kitchen and living room. “We love it!” said Christy. “It really opened up the space!”
While managing that small project, the Masons decided to increase their storage space as well. “We also added a utility closet because the pantry space is small and we needed a place for mops and brooms. It’s really helped to have that extra space to store paper towels, trash bags, etc.!”
Did you know that the Willowsford Conservancy offices are now located in the Willowsford Boat House on Willowsford Lane? This is the second year they have welcomed residents to their new location with a treetrimming party, and they hope to make it a tradition! This year it was set up as a drop-by event on a Thursday evening.
The room was full of cheer, and there were many perks to attending. This year there were paper chains ready to stick and assemble, wood snowflakes to decorate and pine cones to sparkle up with pom poms and yarn. Kids could hang up their creations on the tree as they finished them!
There were many dessert delights too, such as cookies, cocoa, apple cider and chocolate cookie straws. The fresh-cut tree was shimmering by the end of the night, and the Boat House was ready for the holiday season!
What better way to kick off the first musical of the season than with a performance like this one? Rockridge Performing Arts put on a colorful and heartfelt performance set to the musical Big Fish. Originally based on the novel by Daniel Wallace and the film directed by Tim Burton, the story follows Will, a man with a growing family and a lack of imagination. His father, Edward Bloom, used to tell him the whimsical tales of his life and the lessons that came with it. As Will got older, though, the stories lost their magic and became a thing of the past. Will’s journey then transforms into an exploration of imagination and important life lessons as he is determined to see the truth behind these old tales, even as his father’s life is coming to a close.
Big Fish leaves its audience with an important lesson: Don’t be scared of life, and don’t be afraid to live it.
Rockridge’s version of this beautiful story drew in a big audience, along with many fellow high school theater students who left with tears in their eyes after the heartfelt performance. Rockridge High School is known for its many theater-oriented programs. RRPA most recently was awarded a home state championship title for their performance of the play, The Trench. RRPA also runs a two-week theater summer camp. Come check out Beauty and the Beast this summer! More information about the entire performance season can be found on the RRPA website: www. rockridgeperformingarts.org.

Sean Mcintosh, a resident of the Grove, loves wildlife! He’s been interested in wildlife ever since he was young. As a kid, he would spot squirrels, deer, birds, chipmunks, groundhogs and the occasional fox. He also liked to watch documentaries about wildlife when he was younger.
Sean started taking pictures of wildlife back in the summer of 2017, when his family moved to Willowsford.
To look for wildlife he explores Willow Lake, Pin Oak Park, Twin Ponds Park and the Swart Family Farmstead. He even
finds wildlife in his backyard! When Sean is not taking pictures of wildlife he likes to read, write, act, make films and work out. He has seen a lot of cool wildlife and I will share a couple of his coolest experiences!
Once while he was on a nature walk in May of 2021, he saw a mink for the first time (a mink is like a big weasel). This was a big surprise to Sean because while he knew that there are minks in Virginia, he never thought he would get the chance to see one in broad daylight since they are mainly nocturnal.
This past April, Sean was visiting Twin Ponds Park. As he walked down the path, he noticed something jump into the pond. Upon seeing this, he was very surprised and wondered what that was. It turns out, it was a beaver! It poked its head out of the water and started to swim. His mind was blown! He had never seen a beaver in the wild until that very moment!
Last but certainly not least, in August, Sean was chilling on his balcony when he saw a large bird perched on a tree branch.
Amazed by this sight, he started taking pictures of it. At first, Sean thought it was just a vulture, but then Sean saw white on the head and realized that it was a bald eagle!
Sean has had some amazing experiences out in nature and it’s a great reminder of what a wonderful area we all live in.
For the last three years, Willowsford residents young and old have looked forward to seeing the flashing lights of the firetruck pulling Santa’s sleigh wind their way through our neighborhood. It wouldn’t be the holiday season without this event. I am thankful to my mom, Laura Griffin, for every July emailing the Arcola Fire Department to make sure we are on the list for the yearly parade. Did you know that the Grove’s very own Lee Stoermer, a volunteer with the Arcola Fire Department, is Santa’s official driver? Our community has a special connection to the parade, which makes it even more fun.
How much do you look forward to doing this every year? We all look forward to the Santa parades every year. Planning for these actually begins several months in advance, with a couple of people working with the neighborhoods on routes and schedules. Then loading the sleigh, decorating and the events themselves take many more hours of work. It is one of the most anticipated events of the year that we are involved with.
What motivates you to do the Santa truck events? We are all motivated by the response of the kids, and not just the young kids! Hearing some of the parents’ cheers while
driving by gets us nearly as much of a smile as does the kids’ cheers. The “older” kids (parents and grandparents!) get just as excited. Seeing everyone’s enjoyment in the parade and the smiles and cheers on seeing Santa is what motivates us in our effort and time to this project. That is probably my favorite part, closely followed by the comradery of the crew that does the parade production. There is a wide group of people involved with planning, preparing and then the actual parade itself. The fire department is like another family.
How do you decide who drives the big guy, and do you take turns?
The decision on who gets the privilege and honor of driving Santa comes down to who has the training, experience and ability to operate the vehicle. Driving a fire engine is more involved than a regular car or truck. And driving the truck that pulls the sleigh has its own special set of skills and experience requirements. Both require a level of responsibility and awareness even above operating a regular automobile because of the situation involved. In the excitement of seeing Santa, many people will drop their level of safety awareness and we have to be ever watchful of any children that may run up too close to the moving vehicle in their excitement to see Santa up close and personal. So, in addition to the higher-than-normal level of caution, we are even more diligent in these duties while being Santa’s chauffeur. We want everyone to enjoy the event but also to do so safely.
Do you think this should be done everywhere?
I believe that the spirit of Santa should be shared everywhere with everyone. Can the parades be done everywhere? Probably not. Mainly is the logistics of it. We aren’t like Santa and able to cover everywhere in one night! So, by using our people resources the best we can we try to cover the most neighborhood possible, without taking away all their time for their families as well. That is why we don’t go down every street, instead traveling certain routes that the apparatus can safely negotiate while accommodating the people watching the parade. And doing that makes it even more special, wouldn’t
you agree? I like the neighborhoods that have more specific direct routes, not because it is a shorter route but because it draws the neighborhood out together, lining along the streets that are chosen to be the special routes as a community event. In addition, the parade becomes a focal point in collections of donations for food, clothing and funds that then get allocated to the Dulles Food Pantry, USMC Toy For Tots and other local Loudoun County charities.
What is your favorite holiday candy?
My favorite holiday candy isn’t really candy but hot chocolate with a marshmallow! So, I guess that’s close to candy as it is sweet, although Chik-fil-A’s holiday peppermint shake is a really close second!
What motivated you to become a firefighter?
I have been involved with emergency services for over 40 years. I started as a volunteer firefighter when a high school friend’s dad, who happened to be a volunteer firefighter, took us to the station one day. Then after being in the Marines after high school, I was hired as a career firefighter paramedic. Retiring from active fire fighting then, after 32 years, I still work for the Loudoun County Fire Department in a different capacity but still volunteer with Arcola Volunteer Fire in support services. Being a firefighter, what drew me into it and involved with emergency services is a whole other story in all of its adventures, and not enough time to go into here! It has been a great career overall, not without its challenges, though.
This parade is a very special event and one that I, and all the members of the Arcola Volunteer Fire Department, are proud to offer to the community every year.

Put your beauty needs in the best of hands by becoming a client at European Aesthetic & Permanent Makeup Center.
Erika Tutoni is the owner and sole employee of the business and brings 15 years of experience to the table. She’s a master esthetician and instructor and one of the few master permanent makeup artists in Virginia. “Just this year, I was honored to be the recipient of the Best of Loudoun award for permanent makeup,” shared Tutoni.
The award is well deserved as Tutoni has traveled the world to train with the best artists to share knowledge and care for her clients. “I have trained in Estonia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Hungary and the Netherlands, all of which have long-standing histories of beauty industry excellence,” said Tutoni.
The training she’s received is extensive, covering any service one is interested in pursuing.
“The work that I provide has a natural look that is designed to the individual client,” Tutoni said. “We work together as a team to design and achieve a look that is the best fit for their features and lifestyle.”
She’s specialized in eyebrow permanent makeup on hair stroke technique, ombre technique, micro-blading, digital micro-blading, soft top technique, soft powder eyebrow, micro-shading, lip blush, lip liner, lipstick look, lip gloss look, eyeliner, classic eyeliner, shaded eyeliner, eyelash enhancement tattoo, medical tattooing, areola reconstruction, scar camouflage, vitiligo camouflage, stretch mark camouflage and old permanent makeup removal and correction.
For the past few years, Tutoni has frequently corrected unwanted permanent makeup and micro-blading that clients have received elsewhere. She wants anyone considering one of the beauty procedures to do their research on the artist before committing to the service as “corrections are a lengthy and expensive process.”
When a client schedules with Tutoni, they’ll always receive an individualized plan along with a post-procedural treatment regimen. “It is very important to me that my clients do not feel rushed at any stage and that they understand the permanent makeup process and are thrilled with the results,” she said. “From initial contact, it is my pleasure to discuss the types of services that I provide. Most importantly, I want to assure the client that my business and the service that they would receive will not feel like a factory and they are not just a number.” Each customer receives a free in-person consultation “because the bond between artist and client should be as pronounced as the permanent makeup that they are putting on their beautiful face,” she explained. “On purpose, I am my own employee because I stand by my work and reputation and my clients get all of my attention.”
During their consult, prospective clients and Tutoni discuss everything in detail in terms of skin care. “Like in permanent makeup, I seek a way to achieve desired results. Whether this is over the course of a few treatments or a longterm plan, the key once again is the relationship of trust between the client and me,” she said.
Much of Tutoni’s business is word of mouth and repeat clients. “I receive referrals from area-based plastic surgeons and medical spas for medical tattooing. This type of service can
only be performed by master permanent makeup artists.”
Tutoni was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary, in 1976. “During my early years under communist governance, I was exposed to the harsh realities of a world behind the iron curtain where freedoms that I hold so dear today were just a dream,” she shared. “I was forced to march with a red armband while singing songs about the glory of the Soviet Union. It wasn’t until the fall of the Soviet Union that I began to realize the dramatic shift of the world around me.”
In particular, she saw the explosion of the beauty industry in Budapest and the growing attention to skin care and permanent makeup for well-off Hungarians. “It was during that period of time that truly sparked my interest in the field, and it’s when it became my life’s passion,” she said.
Tutoni has lived in Loudoun County since moving here from Hungary in 2007. She feels fortunate to call this wonderful country her home. “I have truly embraced the American dream while becoming a U.S. citizen and opening my own business.”
Erika enjoys what free time she does have as a wife and mom of two beautiful girls. She’s often chauffeuring them between sports and school activities.

THREE CHEERS FOR HARPER ROHR!
Harper is a 13-year-old boy who lives in the Grange part of Willowsford with his parents; younger brother, Bennett; and younger sister, Gracie. Harper participates in multiple sports, such as baseball, football, basketball and swimming, and is a pro at each and every one. He started these sports when he was very little and is continuing to pursue them. He aspired to these sports since his parents signed him up, but he’s passionate about every sport he tries. He mainly practices at the sanctioned practices but also lifts and practices at his house almost every day. Having to practice every day is hard for Harper, but it has made him a stronger person overall, mentally and physically. Since most sports have teams, you can bet he is on a few. For baseball, he plays for BBA, Thunder for football, and he swims for Willowsford Waves. Harper is able to travel because of these sports, and the coolest place he’s traveled to is the WVU baseball field. Additionally, he has earned various awards in his sports career. He has received the coaches’ award for basketball and swimming. He also was most improved in his age group for swimming this past summer. The moment Harper felt most elated was when he hit his very first home run. A word of advice from Harper is to start at a younger age and make sure to practice at home. Overall, Harper has learned that hard work pays off, and that is his motive.
LET’S GIVE A ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR BENNETT ROHR!
Bennett is an athletic 11-year-old boy who is dedicated and hardworking when it comes to sports. Bennett participates in
basketball (four years), baseball (seven years) and swimming (six years) and enjoys every one of them. His baseball team is Baseball Calvary, he plays basketball in AYBL, and he swims for our swim team, Willowsford Waves! He is currently doing nontravel sports but hopes to start travel sports soon. He regularly trains for these sports at home, or at practice. He enjoys catching in baseball, making baskets in basketball, and enjoys swimming breaststroke. He has won multiple awards, such as “The Coach’s Award for Swim,” and “Coach’s Award for Most-Improved Basketball.” He believes that the hardest thing to do in his sports is blocking in baseball. His main inspiration for these sports was his brother, who does these sports as well. These sports have impacted Bennett’s life by making him a stronger and better person. His favorite moment in his sports career was when he struck someone out in baseball, which made him feel elated and proud. Overall, Bennett Rohr is an athletic pupil who puts
in determination and hard work. For all other aspiring athletes, Bennett’s tip of advice is “have fun.”
SHINE THE SPOTLIGHT FOR THE YOUNGEST SIBLING IN THE ROHR FAMILY, GRACIE ROHR!
Gracie is a 9-year-old girl who participates in dance, field hockey and swimming. She has been dancing the longest, for six years, swimming for three years, and field hockey for two. She began to dance because she loved the way ballerinas dance. She was inspired to do field hockey by her mom, who played when in her childhood. And she wanted to do swimming since her brothers were doing it. She practices dancing at NEDA, field hockey at Potomac Field Hockey, and swims for Willowsford Waves. She is also on a team for every single one. Gracie travels for dance competitions, and her favorite moment was when she got to go up and get a banner for her jazz dance. Gracie has earned the most improved awards for swimming and platinum and high gold awards for her lyrical and jazz dances. Gracie has learned how to swim butterfly, how to dribble in field hockey, and how to do a pirouette in dance. Gracie loves her sports because she gets a chance to bond and play with her friends, and these sports have made her a strong person. For all sports fans out there, Gracie says, “Try your best.”

Coach shares memories of playing and goals for coaching.
BY RESIDENTS AND JUNIOR WRITERS LUCAS & HENRY VOOYS THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY THE ST. JAMES FC VIRGINIAWe got to interview Steve Russ, current linebacker coach for the Washington Commanders, about his career. He is a two-time Super Bowl Champion who moved to the Grove this summer. He lives with his wife, Betsy; son, Tyler; dog, Marvel; and two cats. His daughter, Mackenzie, is a sophomore in college at the Air Force Academy. What teams did you play for during your career?
I played as a linebacker in college football at The United States Air Force Academy and professionally for the Denver Broncos, and a brief stint with the Los Angeles Extreme in the first XFL. I’ve coached for Ohio University, Syracuse University, Wake Forest University, The United States Air Force Academy, the Carolina Panthers and now the Washington Commanders. How did you get into coaching?
I got into coaching because I’ve always loved sports, had a strong desire to compete, and have seen firsthand the positive impact coaches can have on their athletes. I love to teach and help people do their best with the abilities they have been blessed with.
What did it feel like to be drafted into the NFL?
Being drafted was an amazing experience, especially since it was the Broncos who were just an hour away from USAFA. Blessed and grateful for the chance to play.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love watching or helping my kids with their sports in my free time. I especially love playing catch with my son or throwing to him in batting practice. I’ve always loved to fish, hunt (deer and ducks) and target shoot, though I haven’t had a lot of time or opportunity for that lately. Can you tell us more about your family?
My wife and I met at the Air Force Academy. Our daughter, Mackenzie, is a sophomore at USAFA and plays volleyball there. Our son, Tyler, is a junior at St. Paul VI High School and is committed to playing baseball at USAFA, as well, upon graduation. We have a dog, Marvel, and two cats who don’t like me very much.
What position did you play? Have you ever gotten an interception or fumble recovery?
I played linebacker and was a part of two Super Bowl Championship teams with the Denver Broncos. I’ve gotten INTs and fumble recoveries, but never in the NFL. What is the most surprising difference between coaching and playing?
The difference between coaching and playing is that playing is much more physical, while coaching is much more mental.
Playing football is very hard on your body, but as a player, you have more free time. As a coach, you pour countless hours into helping your players be the best they can be. Coaching is also more of a “chess match” than playing when it comes to devising schemes to help your players be in the best possible situations to succeed. Both of them are highly competitive, no matter how you look at it, though. What is your favorite memory from your football career?
I have too many great memories from playing and coaching to list or rank. It’s been a very rewarding career over the past 21 years. Even during tough times, there is great value in what I do. Sometimes, I feel I’ve done some of my best work in years we don’t have a lot of “success.” It’s hard to separate success from wins and losses, but I believe sometimes a coach needs to. If you are focused on the correct “process,” the “results” will eventually show up. What are you most excited about for your team this season?
I’m a very positive person, so each season, I’m excited to see what our team can achieve and how we can come together as a unit to do just that. Football is the ultimate team sport because there are so many moving parts, players and facets of the game. The best collection of players don’t always win games; it’s the best team and the team that plays the best on each given day that wins. That’s the great challenge for us all, to be the very best we can be, day in and day out. How we practice and prepare throughout any given week really
sets the table for us to succeed. Then, after all of our work throughout the week, it all comes to a head when the ball is kicked off on Sunday. There is no feeling like it; the highest of highs and sometimes the lowest of lows. It’s all part of it, but we get 24 hours to feel good or bad about the outcome after the game, then we flush it and move on to the next challenge. Who is the funniest athlete you know?
The funniest athlete I’ve ever known, and I’ve known a lot of them, was Keith Burns. He was a fellow LB of mine with the Broncos. He was the life of the locker room and a great teammate and player.
Thanks, Steve, for answering our questions, and good luck this season!
Even a quick trip for a tournament can result in great getaway!
BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER CYDNEY MCMILLIAN THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY FORTIFY CHIROPRACTIC AND SPORTS REHABHave you ever been to Florida in December? My family and I were just there. We flew to Kissimmee, FL, last week. The temperatures were in the 80s, which was much nicer than Virginia’s temps of 30-40 degrees. My younger brother was invited to play football in a national tournament, so we all enjoyed the fun that traveling to Florida could bring ... like going to DISNEY! We went to Magic Kingdom on our first day and had so much fun! I got to choose all the rides because my birthday was the day before. I took full advantage of my day because I knew the rest of the time would consist of all things football!
Once we finished with Disney and a fun birthday dinner at Disney Springs, it was tournament time. My brother and his team checked in, played against three top teams, and ended up winning third place out of the top eight teams in the nation! After their victory game, it was time for fun! We went to a small adventure park with his team, swam in the pool for hours, went to lunch with my GiGi (grandmother) and managed to squeeze in our school work too!
It was a great quick trip, and I can’t wait until my next warm adventure!
You may have heard of this new park, but have you been to it? Hal & Berni Hanson Regional Park, a 257-acre complex, is filled with all kinds of action-packed fun! From a skate park to soccer fields, this park has it all. This fun attraction opened on Sept. 9, 2022, and operates from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. On days off from school, kids are sure to flood this park and will have a great way to spend their time!
Hanson Park is on Evergreen Mills Road, directly across from the Willowsford Grange neighborhood. The park expands to both sides of the road. On the east side is the main playground. The playground has turf hills and mounds to roll and tumble on. One of the big attractions is a spinning ball that you can climb in and on top of. The main playground is divided, with a younger kids’ area and an older kids’ side. On the older kids’ side, there is a ropes playground and a two-story structure. In the younger kids’ area, there is a small obstacle course and shorter slides.
There are 12 soccer fields in all; fields one and two are really nice turf fields. Fields three through 12 are all grass fields that are well maintained. On fields one and two, the soccer goals double as football goal posts. So, make sure you bring a soccer ball and a football to play! Near pond No. 5 is the Nature Center. It overlooks the lake and has garden beds on the side. Inside there are several different small exhibits to learn and look at.
The skate park is a great place to ride scooters, BMX bikes and, of course, skateboards. It contains several bowls and hills to ride on. Also, there are rails to grind and sets of stairs to send. Another cool feature is that there are flood lights, so you can skate at night! It is great for all ages and is a lot of fun.
If you decide you want to come and play, but your dog is just sitting there waiting to release its energy, bring them along! There are two off-leash areas for your pup to have a blast. There is even a cricket field for all those cricket lovers. With four baseball diamonds, it seems as though the planners of this park thought of everything. There’s also five beautiful ponds, an amphitheater, tennis courts and even a future equestrian complex!
If you are watching a game and you get hungry, you might want to grab some food at the concession stands. There are three spaced out around the park. Calling all disc golf fans, there is also an 18-hole course. It is a huge new disc golf park that is all wooded and has some up and downhill holes. It is a par 58! If you like disc golfing, this course is definitely for you!
In the summer, bring your kids to the splash pad with many fun features that will be the perfect activity for warm weather, and once they are done, they can go play on the playground next to it! I bet you didn’t know that there are
nature trails that wind through part of the wooded area where you can bike, jog or just walk! As you can see, Hanson Park is a great addition to our community and will be loads of fun for you and your family!

Hello! My name is Phoebe, and I have a 2½-year-old chocolate Labrador retriever named Bodhi. He is what you would call a quarantine puppy because he was born during the first year of COVID-19. Some of Bodhi’s favorite things to do are to play with squeaky toys, go on long walks around Pin Oak Park and Chatham Green Circle, swim in our pool and eat my mom’s favorite shoes. Bodhi will do almost anything to get a treat! This especially helped when he went to doggy training this summer, or as I like to call it, “Doggy Boot Camp.” He came back
so well-trained. My whole family thinks that he’s such a good boy. So good that we thought he deserved a special surprise! What should have been a regular day of playing with toys and long walks became the day we got Bodhi a best friend! This summer, Maverick, a 9-weekold silver Lab, became the newest member of the Monas family. Bodhi and Maverick love all the same things: toys, walks and lots of treats! Soon enough, Maverick will learn how to swim, too. I’m so happy that they get along so well. Because what’s better than having one Lab? Having two!
We are so excited to welcome Thomas (Tommy) Faulkner into the world! He was born right before midnight on Nov. 21, 2022. He is an unexpected gift that has been bestowed on our family, which we thought was already complete. We can’t wait to experience all that life has to offer Tommy and our family and to discover the balance between the busy lives of both teenagers and newborns.
Have you welcomed a new addition to your family? Email Billie.rose@n2co.com to have them featured!
As many Willowsford residents know, making a difference can be a fun, low-key neighborhood experience! Over the Thanksgiving holiday, neighbors in the Grove and Greens hosted a Turkey Bowl with 36 kids participating and Holiday Heroes benefitting.
Resident Kate Smith, an organizer of the game, said, “We just opened it up for friends to invite their friends. Attendance doubled this year!” Participants ranged in age from 9-13 and were divided into four teams, with two games playing at once. Dads helped to coach, and referees were assigned to each team.
Every participant brought items to donate to the Holiday Heroes program. “We chose Holiday Heroes because the kids in need are directly in our school communities,” Kate said.
As a result, a variety of gifts were collected for a local 7-year-old boy and a 12-yearold girl, just from a friendly neighborhood game of flag football!

Over 200 Willowsford community residents attended Stroll Willowsford’s second annual “Fall Family Field Party” on Saturday, Nov. 5, 3-5 p.m. Families walked, drove or brought their golf carts over to The Greens, off Grassland Grove, and set up blankets and chairs with their neighbors and friends.
It was an unseasonably warm November afternoon, and Willowsford families made the most of it. There was something for everyone with One Family Brewing’s generous donation of their 1946 Chevy Tap Truck with unlimited beverages to New Orleans-style SnoBalls with nonalcoholic and alcoholic selections, graciously provided by Campbell’s Lawn & Irrigation.
The kids were kept active by The St. James FC Virginia staff with an obstacle course moonbounce and were entertained with face painting and glitter tattoos by Hilt Face Painting. Pop Notch Designs donated a beautiful Fall Photo Corner, and Darlene’s Photography stayed busy snapping special family photos. Zell’s Kitchen with Chef Eddie, “the taco master,” was on-site for delicious food purchases.
Proceeds of $1,800 were donated to local nonprofit One Family Giving to provide gifts to adopted military families in need over the holidays.

They also raised over $60,000 for the next Gold Star Family Memorial to be unveiled on May 28, 2023, in Chesapeake, VA, and raised over $20,000 for both local and national charities this past Sept. 9-10 with their Freedom Celebration, hosted at One Family Brewing’s Lovettsville farm. “We are honored for the opportunity to sponsor such a successful event. We love this community and are grateful to contribute to memorable times together,” said Ferris Eways.
On Thursday, Dec. 15, The Virginia Institute for Surgical Arts hosted its annual holiday party; this year, the theme was “Chic Slumber.” Friends and Willowsford residents came to Willowsford’s Lodge Clubhouse for a night of fun, raffles and amazing specials. Guests walked into a transformed space, with white balloons covering the floor.
The food spread was top-notch, including Shake Shack, McDonald’s fries, Chinese takeout and a long dessert table completed with Georgetown Cupcakes. Guests who made any purchases throughout the night were entered to win some amazing prizes: Environ Skincare Sets, a Morpheus8 Treatment and so much more!
“This event was such an awesome time! I can’t wait for the next one!” said resident Kellie Rowson.
All ticket proceeds went to The Children’s National Hospital.
