Manager’sLetter

Manager’s Letter A Note from Willowsford Lane

by Rebecca Lyons, CMCA®, AMS®, PCAM® HOA Community Manager I hope you all have settled into your back-to-school routines and are looking forward to all the fun Lifestyle events coming this fall, including one of my favorites— AutumnFest. Please join us at The Lodge on Saturday, October 12th for mouthwatering food, live music, family activities, take home crafts for the kids, a gourmet caramel apple dipping station, and more! But, that’s not all we have going on this fall. Inside WillowsfordLife, you’ll learn what else we have planned for you.

Please also visit WillowsfordLife.com to view the calendar of upcoming events, activities, and meetings. Speaking of meetings, the next HOA Board Meeting is scheduled for November 14th at 5:30 PM at Sycamore House. The 2020 Draft Budget is anticipated to be on the agenda and is a great opportunity for residents to learn more about the business operations of the community. As we quickly approach the new year, Willowsford’s Founder Control Period will soon come to an end and Board transition becomes an important topic. Elections are slated to take place at the 2020 Annual Meeting next March, after which the Board of Directors will transition to an all-resident, five member Board. The Association will be utilizing electronic communication and online voting which will be more convenient for residents and processed by an independent third party. There will be more information to come in the following months; however, if you are interested in running for the Board now is the time to reach out, educate yourself, and stay involved. As a reminder, email is the Association’s primary and legal form of communication. If you have changed your email contact information, please notify us at HOA@Willowsford.com. Thanks for reading and I hope to see you at AutumnFest!

Creating a Native Plant Garden by Claudette Papathanasopoulos Willowsford Resident I always considered myself an environmental advocate, so when I moved to Willowsford I knew I wanted my yard to be wildlife friendly. I was familiar with the struggles wildlife in the area face. As new roads and buildings are developed, habitat is limited and fragmented, making it hard for animals to find the food and nesting spaces they need. I had heard that adding native plants to my yard would provide much needed food and shelter.

Papathanasopoulos Family

The problem, though, was that I did not know what native plants were or where to buy them. I had never had a yard before, and wasn’t sure where to start. Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy pointed me to Native Plants for Northern Virginia, a short, illustrated guide that helped me pick a few trees and shrubs to supplement what my homebuilder had already planted. At first, I added Eastern Red Cedar, American Holly, and Serviceberry trees to create privacy and shade. I put a small birdhouse and birdbath between the cedars. Days later, I was surprised to see a pair a bluebirds already taking up residence in the birdhouse. Motivated to do more, I went to Watermark Woods, a native plant nursery in nearby Hamilton. The staff recommended shrubs and flowers suitable for my yard. I happily went home with Pinkster Azaleas, Oakleaf

“ ...native plants provide many benefits not just to wildlife, but also to my family Fall2019

Hydrangeas, and a Trumpet Vine I hoped would grow up the side of my deck and attract hummingbirds. It quickly did both. I was pleased to discover that adding even just a few natives to my yard had attracted a range of pollinators and created a natural corridor through which they could move. Eventually, I contacted Magee Designs, a local landscape firm that specializes in native plants. Magee created a plan for my yard that provides endless blooms and a range of plants to feed and shelter wildlife all year long. As I planted, wildlife continued to move into and through my yard. I now have a daily parade of butterflies moving between flowers and patches of Mountain Mint that hum with pollinators. My favorite sight is a pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers that dive down from the treetops to catch the bugs that fly across my yard.

VillageVoice Since beginning, I’ve realized native plants provide many benefits not just to wildlife, but also to my family. Because they are naturally adapted to our soil and climate, native plants often require less water, fertilizer and pesticides than their exotic counterparts. They grow faster, too. After only a year, my Phlox and Stonecrop have grown so thick that I no longer have to pull weeds or apply mulch around them. However, the best benefit is the joy the plants have brought to my family. The New England Asters planted by our driveway bloom for months, all the way through November, and seem to smile at my family every time we come home.

Have a little one at home who loves to cook? One of the more unique programs Willowsford offers is Jr. Chef Academy. These 6-week sessions are an amazing opportunity for children ages 5 – 13 to learn where their food comes from and how to prepare and cook meals. The series finale is a three-course meal prepared and hosted by the kids, followed by a graduation ceremony. Congratulations to our fall Jr. Chef Academy students who will graduate at the end of October! It is truly amazing to watch each child grow throughout the course and serve their guests with so much pride of what they’ve learned. Ortiz Family Life in The Greens by Kacie Ward HOA Communications Coordinator The Ortiz family brings new meaning to the phrase full house! On Hickory Bluff Court in The Greens, Ralph and Sara Ortiz have established a splendid haven for their large and loving blended family. The older trio of kids include 25-year-old Jordan who is starting out her career in Alexandria and 21-year old twins Jacob and Kyle who recently began their senior year at James Madison University and the University of Mary Washington, respectively. Affectionately referred to as the “mini-me’s,” the younger trio includes three and a half year-old Emma and 8-month-old twins Matteo and Luca. The family is joined by two wonderful au pairs who help make their lives run. Last but not least, rounding out the household are two oversize but lovable pups, Chloe and Mahalo.

had quite a busy year. Now that the babies are a bit older the family is hoping to join in on some of the fun activities and Lifestyle events in the coming months. Sara is eager to attend some cooking and yoga classes while Ralph is looking to join a recreational club. Emma is keeping busy enjoying the parks and tot lots and playing with her new best friends across the street.

“Willowsford is the community we were always looking for!”

Married for six years, Ralph and Sara met while working together at the Five Guys corporate headquarters in Lorton. He is the Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and she is the Head of Human Resources. While there is some juggling of their careers, working at the same company represents the ultimate blending of work-life balance and they have felt support from their colleagues along the way. Joined by close friends and family, Ralph and Sara tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony overlooking the towering pines and majestic mountains of Beaver Creek, Colorado. They later celebrated with a 10-day honeymoon luxuriating on the scenic shores of Hawaii. “Willowsford is the community we were always looking for! We just rounded out our first year here and love the close-knit neighborhood, the many events, spaces for our kids to play, and the focus on a nature/home balance,” they say. The Ortiz family moved to Willowsford late summer of last year. Just as they were settling in, Matteo and Luca were born so (understandably) the family has

FamilyFeature The Ortiz family is looking forward to the upcoming Halloween holiday. It’s Ralph’s favorite time of year and he pulls out all the stops transforming their home into a fantastic haunted house! Coincidentally, one of their fondest neighborhood memories was last Halloween, their first one here at Willowsford. “Emma was a spider princess and it was the first Halloween where she really understood what was going on and she had such a blast! We have such a wonderful little piece of the community on our surrounding streets and everyone was out handing out candy and meeting each other. It was a very warm welcome to the neighborhood for us,” they say. There is something entirely unique and special about blended families. “I love my family, my sister, and all

of my brothers. I like that my brothers are big because they swing me a lot,” Emma proudly proclaims. Having a larger-than-average family may mean a neverending pile of laundry and extra dishes to clean, but it also means more laughter, enhanced memories, always having someone by your side, and sharing a remarkable amount of love. Do you know a family that should be featured in the next issue of WillowsfordLife? We are looking for candidates that have a unique, interesting story to share and are actively involved in the community! Nominate a fellow household by emailing HOA@willowsford.com.

Proposing a Project Exterior Modification Applications by Christine Dilloway HOA Assistant Manager As a new and growing community, it is likely that you’re thinking about proposing modifications to the exterior of your home—or already have. Whether you’re fencing in the yard, building your dream pool, or adding a screenedin porch, before you break ground, make sure to get your plans approved by the Design Review Committee. While it may seem arbitrary from an individual homeowner’s standpoint, the Design Review Committee looks out for the entire community as a whole. Aside from preventing someone from painting pink polka dots on their house, the Committee’s responsibility is to make sure that the size, style, scope of the project, type of building materials, and overall look of the new structure are in alignment with Willowsford’s unique design requirements. Not only does this keep the community looking cohesive, it also helps maintain property values. While the approval process may seem daunting initially, unapproved structures could result in a violation and fines, or need to be removed or altered at the owner’s expense. If you’re in the process of selling your home, this could also end up delaying the closing. If you have any questions about the process, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to help!

When you’re ready to start your new project, or if the design of your project changes midway through building it, send your plans to the Design Review Committee first so that they can make sure the plans are in compliance with Willowsford’s Design Guidelines. For more complex or intricate projects, the Design Review Committee offers a limited number of pre-review appointments each month which allows for a more in-depth discussion of your proposed plans to take place. It’s our goal to help you through this detailed process as best as possible so you can enhance your new home! We appreciate all the hard work that residents put into their homes and this community to make it beautiful. Please help us keep Willowsford looking great by keeping us in the loop on all your building projects and modifications. For more information on the Design Review Process, application checklists, and to view the most recent copy of the Design Guidelines, please visit WillowsfordLife. com > Design Review.

Design Review Committee Information Here are upcoming DRC dates to keep in mind. If you have any questions about the process, please reach out to DRC@willowsfordlife.com. Paul’s Picks

Flowering Kale & Cabbage Flowering kale and cabbage are the perfect addition to your yard as fall approaches and temperatures drop. They look great with pansies and chrysanthemum in pots or flower beds to replace tired summer annuals. They thrive in cool temperatures and develop white, pink, or red pigments when temperatures dip below 50°F. Once acclimated, they can survive temperatures as low as 5°F and may last well into November and December.

Design Review Seasonal Favorites by Paul Jeannin, DRC Member Many of you know me as a member of the DRC and reviewer of your Exterior Modification Application. Hopefully as you drive through and enjoy the community you are impressed by the quality of the outdoor projects our residents have implemented. What you may not know is that I’m also a Landscape Architect and assist many communities in the Northern Virginia and Maryland area. My primary focus is maintenance oversight and landscape master planning. To that end, I’m always on the look-out for new plants and improved varieties. Like many of you, I enjoy gardening and incorporating these species into my own yard when the opportunity arises. Here are three of my fall favorites!

FAQs •

What is a neighbor acknowledgment? You may be wondering the purpose of page two of the Exterior Modification Application, which asks for neighbor acknowledgments. Your neighbors’ signatures represent that you have informed them of your plans to submit an Exterior Modification Application. It does not indicate that they are in support of your proposed projects. Applicants are responsible for obtaining the signatures of all adjoining units as well as those adjacent units located across the street. If you are approached by a neighbor and you have concerns about their proposed project, please reach out to DRC@willowsfordlife.com to further discuss.

When will I be informed of the Committee’s decision?

My Application was approved. Now what? Congratulations! Your approval is good for one year from the date shown on the letter. All modifications must begin within six months of approval and be complete within one year. The approval is contingent upon the project being completed with no deviations from the approved plans. Any changes to the approved plans must be submitted for review. In addition, please be advised that construction vehicles may not enter common area to deliver materials or facilitate construction; access is permitted by driveway only. Remember to keep a copy of the approval letter for your files.

We know that you are probably excited to get started on your new project right away! Formal decision letters will be emailed within seven days of the DRC Meeting. Kindly note that due to the volume of Applications submitted each month, we are unable to provide decisions over the phone. Can’t wait that long? Residents are welcome to attend the DRC Meeting in person to receive a verbal decision from the Committee. No appointment necessary; simply drop by Sycamore House the morning of the

Winterberry Holly Ilex verticillate Holly is a fantastic addition to border screens, hedges, and native plant areas. The DRC may not deny a “soldier row” planting, but would much prefer more natural looking border which includes native shrubs. In such a scenario, the winterberry holly provides excellent color with red berries contrasting against evergreen background. Winterberries are particularly attractive to many species of birds and perform well in both wet and dry conditions.

Toxicities The Pet Corner by Alice Ignaszewski, DVM, MS Willowsford Resident Have you ever found yourself wondering, “Is this dangerous for my pet?” Most people are likely familiar with the fact that chocolate is bad for dogs and cats, but what is dangerous for your pet extends well beyond a candy bar. Below is a list of toxic medications and foods that animal owners should be aware of. Acetaminophen Also known as Tylenol®, acetaminophen is toxic to both dogs and cats, but cats are much more sensitive due to an enzyme deficiency. Toxicosis can lead to liver and red blood cell damage. Signs of toxicity include depression, weakness, vomiting, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face and/or paws. Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) Common human NSAIDs include Advil® and Motrin®, which can be toxic to dogs and cats. Stomach ulcers and

kidney failure can occur if an NSAID is ingested in a toxic amount. Common signs of toxicity include bloody vomit, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and an increase in thirst and urination. It is important to note that there are FDA-approved veterinary NSAIDs that are safer for animals that their human counterparts. Chocolate Both dogs and cats are susceptible to chocolate toxicosis, but dogs seem to be the ones most likely to sneak the sweet treat. One of the toxic components of chocolate is caffeine, which is also found in coffee and tea. Ingestion of these products may result in an upset stomach that progresses to hyperactivity, incoordination, an elevated heart rate, tremors, and seizures. Grapes and Raisins Ingestion of grapes and raisins can be toxic to dogs, but not all dogs are equally susceptible. Toxicity can cause kidney failure, characterized by vomiting and/or diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, and dehydration. Onions, Garlic, Chives, Leeks, Shallots & Scallions All of these products are toxic to both dogs and cats. When ingested, the animal’s red blood cells are destroyed, impairing their ability to carry oxygen. Paws&Claws Xylitol Xylitol is a sweetener that is used in sugar-free products, such as gum and candy. It is toxic to dogs, causing dangerously low blood sugar levels. Signs include vomiting, incoordination, weakness, seizures, and coma. Pyrethrins & Pyrethroids Some dog flea and tick topical spot-on products contain substances called pyrethrins or pyrethroids that are extremely dangerous for cats. Toxicity can occur when a cat is treated with a product labeled for dogs, or by coming in contact with or grooming a dog that has recently been treated. Signs of toxicity include twitching, excess salivation, trembling, and seizures. Always check the product label warning statements and never use a product labeled for dogs on any animal other than a dog. This list highlights only some of the dangers that may be lurking in your home and is by no means all-inclusive. If you are ever concerned that your pet has ingested or come in contact with a toxic substance, speak with a veterinarian immediately or call a pet poison control helpline.

Certified Organic From the Farm by Collin Thompson Farm Manager

&

Ashley Swensen Retail Manager

At its most basic, farming means growing. This year, we’ve grown more than just an array of veggies; we’ve grown the Farm itself. Some of the most important news came without fanfare, in a simple envelope from California Certified Organic Farmers. CCOF has been certifying organic farms throughout the U.S. since the 1970s and helped write the organic guidelines for the Department of Agriculture. That envelope contained Willowsford Farm’s own organic certification. This milestone has been years in the making. It reminded us again that no one is better at playing “the long game” than a farmer. Obtaining organic status starts with supplying the certifying body with three years of logs and affidavits covering all the steps in our production model, from seed varieties to pest control. The Farm crew made choices from 2011 to this very season that add up to where we are today. By doing things thoughtfully, by choosing health over ease from the very start and continuing year after year, our evolving team worked within these guiding principles and positioned us for this moment. Our pride comes from knowing that we’ve been farming to these meaningful standards all along.

Fall2019

It’s because of our commitment to each of you that we have always wanted to grow the best and healthiest food. We love the special relationship we have with our community and are excited to make that relationship stronger by making all those organic veggies available online. We know that some of you have considered joining CSA, and that for one reason or another, a full season wasn’t right for you this year. That’s ok! We all eat and shop differently. If you’re still interested in eating local and organically grown produce, the new Farm Stand Online may be right for you.

“It’s because of our commitment to each of you that we have always wanted to grow the best and healthiest food.” Sometimes, we harvest more than we need for our regular CSA members. Through Farm Stand Online, we’ll send email opportunities to purchase extra shares—a great way to “sample” CSA by buying extras only when it’s convenient for you, no strings attached.

With so much news to share, it may seem as though Willowsford Farm has also entered a new era. What our shareholders and shoppers know, though, is that these changes are driven by the same mission we’ve always held dear—growing food and community. Each tweak and addition to the Farm is another step on this journey we’ve undertaken with you. In the midst of our excitement and plans, food brings us back to the present. Wood Ducks in Willowsford A Habitat Improvement Success by Patrick Boleman Conservancy Land Stewardship Manager In the fall of 2018, local Boy Scout Kevin Lang built wood duck nest boxes for Willowsford Conservancy for his Eagle Scout project. With the assistance of Troop 997, four boxes were installed at ponds in The Greens and The Grove to increase nesting habitat. The wood duck (Aix sponsa) is one of the most vibrant American waterfowl with males boasting a collage of iridescent chestnut browns and emerald greens. Wood ducks are cavity nesters, meaning they require hollow spaces in trees to build nests. Typically, these hollows are found in standing dead trees, called snags. While cavity nesting songbirds such as eastern bluebirds also require tree cavities, wood ducks need larger spaces. As forested area is removed from the landscape nesting habitat also disappears. Providing artificial nest boxes creates much needed habitat for our cavity nesting neighbors. This spring, monitoring of the nest boxes began as we patiently waited to see if any wood ducks would move in. In April, we were thrilled to find a female wood duck nesting in the box at Spring Peeper Pond. Volunteer wildlife monitors Keith and Rachel Alsop regularly checked the wood duck boxes this season and we are

happy to announce our first family of wood duck chicks! While we do not know the exact number of wood ducks that fledged, we are delighted that our efforts had a positive impact on the wood duck population in Willowsford. From building, to installing, and ultimately monitoring the nest boxes, volunteers and community members made the entire project a success. We look forward to what the 2020 season will bring!

Call for Volunteers! To join our team of wildlife monitors, please visit the Conservancy website at WillowsfordConservancy.org/About/Get-Involved to sign up as a volunteer. In addition to becoming a wildlife monitor there are other opportunities to volunteer including scouting the trails, helping with Conservancy events, photography, assisting in the Farm Garden, and much more.

WillowsfordConservancy Welcome Steve Luckett

Welcome Robert Gavin

From a young age Steve enjoyed roaming the outdoors, spending time with animals—from dogs to horses, and everything in between. When he was younger, he spent a month driving around this great country, seeing the beauty of Yellowstone, the Redwood Forest, and the mountains of Montana, among other sights. This adventure only fueled his love of the outdoors, camping, hunting, and fishing.

Robert joined the Conservancy as a seasonal Landscape Maintenance Technician in March 2019 and was promoted to a full-time Ranger in June. “I am very excited to be a Ranger for Willowsford Conservancy. Landscaping is in my blood,” says Rob. “Since I was 13, I had several neighborhood clients who employed me to mow, mulch, weed, and string trim their lawns. I was born in Russia and landed at Dulles Airport at 6.5 months old with my new mother and father on Christmas Eve. My sister, who was adopted from Russia a year earlier, was waiting with family and friends. I graduated from Briar Woods High School in 2016. Throughout the years, sports were a big part of my life including Tae Kwon Do, soccer, volleyball, and lacrosse (my favorite). Since graduating, I’ve taken classes at NOVA Community College while working various jobs.”

Assistant Field Operations Manager

Steve started his career with Fairfax County Park Authority working at Frying Pan Farm Park where he helped preserve and share the 1920s-1950s period working farm and interpreted the agricultural process, rural community life, and the rural landscape. This is where Steve gained his love for livestock (his wedding engagement pictures even include a sweet cow named “Trixy” from Frying Pan Park). After spending several years working there, he moved on to caring for various parks and recreational facilities within Herndon, Great Falls, and Reston. He has spent a great deal of time caring for Fairfax County Park Authority’s historical sites, forests, and trails throughout the grounds. Steve joined Willowsford Conservancy in May 2019 and is thrilled to be part of a community that is dedicated to forest, open space, and wildlife conservation. If you see him out and about on the trails, stop by and say “hello”!

Fall2019

Conservancy Ranger

Robert enjoys animals and has a Chinese water dragon and spotted gecko and his family has two “fat” cats and a boxer. When he’s not working, you can find him fishing, playing sports, and enjoying the outdoors— especially the beach. He is a huge fan of ice hockey and the Washington Capitals. Robert loves the time he gets to spend outdoors working here. “Each day is different and I enjoy seeing the wildlife like rabbits, deer, and turkey. I’m happy to be part of the Land Stewardship Team and am excited to learn about conservation here with the Willowsford Conservancy,” says Rob.

Fall Fun It’s fall! The air turns crisp, the trees change colors, and nature offers a whole host of new and exciting things to find in the outdoors. Here are some fun activities to try this season.

Nishika, Age 8

Ashley Kang, Age 8

Jack Harp, Age 8

Pitch a tent. Spend an evening roasting marshmallows and sharing stories around the campfire at one of The Grant Family Campground’s seven family-size tent pads. During the day, the expansive woodlands provide opportunities for hiking, nature exploration, and wildlife watching.

Jump in a pile of leaves. One of the best parts of fall are all the amazing leaves of different sizes, shapes, and textures! How many varieties will you discover? Red Oak, Silver Maple, Sweetgum, Ash, and more.

Go bird watching. Many birds migrate from north to south in the fall and this natural occurrence is a wonderful educational opportunity for budding biologists. Bring along binoculars and a nature journal to record your findings.

Roam through a pumpkin patch. Stop by one of Loudoun County’s local farms to pick your own pumpkins and stock up on gourds and squash for crafts and cooking while you’re there.

Explore hidden treasures. Located in The Grant in a clearing near a grand old oak tree you will find Wild Plum Pocket Park which features a tot lot and picnic area, the perfect place to meet new neighborhood friends.

Hunt for pinecones. Turn a simple walk into a treasure hunt when you keep an eye out for pinecones. After you’ve collected a few use them to make bird feeders, paint them, or even turn them into a wreath just in time for Turkey Day.

The Greens Welcomes the Norton Grape Planting a Vineyard by Kelly Smith Marketing Associate

Hickox Family There is always something happening at Willowsford. We find that the array of amenities, activities, and Lifestyle choices available to our residents is the reason so many families choose to make Willowsford their home. You can stay active on the trails, have a picnic at a pavilion, play disc golf with friends, attend a culinary class, shop and eat local through the Farm Stand, or, simply watch nature pass by from your back porch. That’s quite unique. Jon Hickox, owner of The Winery at Bull Run thought so, too. Last fall he and his family settled on a pair of estate lots in The Greens and in April they began planting a seven-acre vineyard of Norton grapes on the property. The vineyard is comprised of one acre of two-year-old dormant canes (vines that were grown outside over the winter) while the other six acres are planted with greenhouse-grown grapes in their first year. It takes three to five years for a vine to produce wine making fruit and once mature, a seven-acre vineyard at maximum production can yield approximately 28 tons of grapes which will make about 1,680 cases of wine (perhaps a special Willowsford Label?).

Fall2019

The Norton grape was first cultivated by Dr. Daniel Norton in Richmond, Virginia and is the only grape suited to wine-making that is native to the United States. Jon Hickox selected the Norton grape for the vineyard as a nod to its Virginia history and because it is a hearty disease resistant vine that grows well in less than ideal conditions. Today, the Winery at Bull Run sits on 225 scenic acres adjacent to Manassas National Battlefield Park. Ten acres of vines grow onsite with the bulk of their fruit grown and harvested at their 115-acre estate in Little Washington, which they call Rock Mill Vineyard. Now, their seven acres at Willowsford join the assemblage. In 2018, we were lucky enough to partner with The Winery at Bull Run to create a Willowsford Private Reserve Label exclusively for our Lifestyle events and for residents to enjoy. Imagine if that wine was made with grapes grown in Willowsford…it doesn’t get much more local than that!
