This publication includes information about VON. VON is a nonprofit, charitable organization with a full range of programs and services delivered in our communities.

VON is proud to have served Thunder Bay for over 100 years as a key provider of community nursing, and specialized services. We are continually striving to provide quality service to Northwestern Ontario. The staff of our core programs, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Social Work and Homemaking are dedicated and provide quality care to the communities we serve.

About VON 189 897 A Proud History of Caring, Since 1 89 7 For over one hundred years, the Victorian Order of Nurses has pioneered health care services in Canada. In 1997, we celebrated our centennial. As we enter our second Century of Caring, we continue our proud tradition of identifying health and social needs and providing services to meet those needs.

At the turn of the century, nurses, doctors and hospitals were desperately needed in remote areas and in rapidly growing towns and cities. Ishbel Aberdeen, wife of the Governor General of Canada, after witnessing their hardship and sickness in isolated areas, decided to found an Order of Visiting Nurses in Canada as a memorial to the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's coronation.

The first VON branches were organized in Kingston, Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Halifax and Vancouver. During the 1917 Halifax Disaster, the Influenza Epidemic of 1918 and throughout both World Wars, the Victorian Order of Nurses was there to provide care and compassion to Canadians in need. Following times of crisis, the VON initiated worthy community projects such as prenatal education, school health services, visiting nursing services and home care programs.

The Victorian Order of Nurses first came to the City of Fort William in 1899 to address the needs of 74 immigrant individuals.

The nurses remained in Fort William until June 25, 1903 when their cottage hospital was renamed the John McKellar Memorial Hospital with its own Board of Directors.

In 1944, the VON returned to Fort William and in 1946 to Port Arthur to assist in the care and education for the post war babies.

These branches later joined together to form Lakehead Branch and in 1987, once again underwent a name change to more accurately reflect the area it served and became "Thunder Bay and District Branch". In May 1999, VON expanded to include satellite offices in Nipigon, Geraldton, Terrace Bay/Schreiber and Manitouwadge.

There has been a necessary evolution of their activities from home nursing to include many other community services adapted to local needs. Through our local and national association, VON

works to influence health and social policies. We advocate with individuals, families, communities and other interest groups to ensure health care is available and accessible.

Today's Victorian Order of Nurses proudly continues its centuryold tradition of caring for Canadians.

Today, there are VON branches and sites across Canada. Thunder Bay is proud to provide Thunder Bay and District communities with important health care services and initiatives. Staffed by Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, Physiotherapists, Social Workers, Homemakers, Personal Support Workers and supported by a team of support staff, volunteers, administrative workers, VON continues to seek creative ways to enhance the quality of life of our local citizens.

Programs at a Glance Visiting Nursing Our nurses are highly specialized in areas such as IV Therapy, post-hospital care, complex wound management, palliative care and ongoing support, among others.

Homemaking VON Homemaking Program provides a full range of services to those living at home and are unable to perform homemaking, personal care or activities of daily living for themselves.

Physiotherapy VON Physiotherapists are instrumental in helping people cope with their physical problems.

Social W ork Work VON Social Workers provide professional counselling to clients and/or their families in the convenience of their own home.

Shift Nursing/Shift Homemaking VON’s Shift Nursing & Shift Homemaking programs provide qualified, personalized care. A convenient alternative to institutional care, the program is extremely flexible and offers care from a few hours to around the clock service.

Worksite Immunization Research has shown that influenza immunization prevents illness in approximately 70% of the population. Employees can benefit from this convenient, worksite service.

Continence Program Many Canadians will experience some form of incontinence during their life. The VON Nurse Continence Advisor will conduct an assessment, develop a treatment plan and offer practical solutions for dealing with your incontinence.

Adult Day Programs A daytime program for socially isolated or medically compromised clients over 55 years, which helps them maintain their health, abilities and independence as long as possible. This program provides day respite for caregivers as well as stimulating activities for clients.

Foot Care Program Keep Canadian seniors on their feet. Our nurses have specialized training in the care of common foot problems. Clinics are offered throughout the city.

• Every effort is made to speak with clients in their preferred language. The dignity and beliefs of all people are respected.

Participation The VON nurse plays a key role in a client's plan of care, visit schedule and communicating information to other staff members on the health care team. Our services help you remain at home and to remain as active and independent as possible.

• For expert care and friendly, reliable service, you can depend on VON's carefully chosen health care team: Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), Social Workers, Physiotherapists, Homemakers, Personal Support Workers, support staff and volunteers.

Professional Nursing Services VON is ready to deliver care to our communities 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year.

Regular nursing visits occur between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to midnight everyday.

Nursing may be provided by a funder or private insurance plans and/or on a private-pay basis.

As a nursing care provider for the Northwest Community Care Access Centre (NWCCAC), VON receives referrals for nursing and specialized services.

General Visiting Nursing All VON nursing services are provided by RNs or RPNs, holding current, valid Certificates of Competence issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.

The objectives of VON Nursing Services are to assist people to remain at home or to help them return to their normal daily activities as soon as possible. VON nurses help individuals to make informed decisions about their health, and enable clients to attain and maintain their highest level of independence and quality of life. VON nurses provide support to caregivers and families in their caregiving role.

The VON is committed to working with community partners to provide all residents of Thunder Bay, and District with access to the best quality nursing services. Referrals may be made through a funder or services may be requested directly to VON.

Shift Nursing VON's Shift Nursing Program delivers personal and compassionate nursing care services around the clock, whether it is for 2 hours or a shift of 24 hours. Home visits are available any time and care is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout the year.

Shift Nursing is available for people of all ages in their own homes, hospital or long term care facilities.

VON's nursing staff provides all levels of specialized care, including IV Therapy, wound care and pain and symptom management.

VON's Shift Nursing Team provides hands on care and support for clients living with a variety of illnesses, including Cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS), after surgery and any injury or illness. Services are also delivered to children in schools and summer camp.

Shift Nursing may be paid by a funder, extended or work place related insurance plans, or clients pay privately. VON offers complete assistance with insurance inquiries and claims.

Palliative Care Program Oncology/Palliative Care is most easily defined as the holistic (physical, psychological and spiritual) care of people and families who are living with a terminal illness. Care is focused on providing comfort. Quality of life is emphasized and relief of suffering is paramount.

Being at home with loved ones is very important to many people with terminal illnesses.

VON respects a person’s choice to die at home or to remain at home as long as possible in their own surroundings.

When the decision to die at home is made, access to specialized services is essential. A multi-disciplinary team, of which VON is a partner, provides the compassionate care to ease the suffering of the client and give support to caregivers and family.

Throughout the illness, the VON Nurse will closely watch the client's physical comfort and emotional well being and give the support needed. VON also supports caregivers during this difficult time.

Telephone assistance and reassurance, symptom control and pain management are available.

As part of the health care team, VON nurses work with other health care professionals, hospitals and community resources.

Continence Management Loss of bladder or bowel control is referred to as incontinence.

VON Nurse Continence Advisors (NCA) help people learn about today’s choices for optimal continence care and take an active part in their own care. VON Continence Management Services includes rehabilitative care and treatment within the home and long term care facilities. A client’s dignity and self-esteem are always respected.

VON Nurse Continence Advisor (NCA) will assess an individual to determine the cause of incontinence, develop a treatment and/or rehabilitation plan and make follow-up visits to monitor their progress.

People of all ages experiencing a loss of bladder or bowel control due to illness, injury, childbirth or other physical challenges can benefit from Continence Management Services. Many incontinence conditions are treatable and can be reversed without surgery.

The NCA can help a client manage his/her own unique situation and learn self-care strategies. The nurse shares valuable information with clients, families and/or caregivers on the many protection systems and devices available. Where possible, natural techniques for controlling the bladder or bowel are taught which reduces the individual’s dependency on incontinence products.

A trusting relationship is built between the nurse and client. The counselling, teaching and support given by the NCA can help a client overcome living with incontinence and significantly improve his/her quality of life.

The NCA works together with clients, physicians and other health care professionals and can be reached in one of the following ways: 1) Hospitals or community agencies may arrange a consultation by telephoning the VON Thunder Bay office at 344-0012.

2) A physician can refer a client.

3) At a client’s request, a private consultation can be arranged in a client’s home or at the VON office.

There may be a fee for this service if the service is not covered under a funder or private insurance.

Homemaking Program Quality Care Whether you are being cared for at home or in an institutional setting, VON will customize a care plan that is designed to meet your specific health care needs.

The VON Personal Support Workers or Homemaking staff are educated to provide personal care, assist with meal preparation and complete light housekeeping duties. This service assists clients to remain at home-and maintain some of their freedom, independence and social relationships.

Respite Care The emotional and physical toll of caring for a loved one often causes strain and exhaustion for the family or primary caregiver. VON understands the stress illness can cause.

Respite care allows you to take a break from the daily pressures of care giving. Knowing that a skilled VON Personal Support Worker/Homemaker is providing care for a few hours a week, for a day or several days, gives peace of mind . Our reputation of caring is proven.

Shift homemaking is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Homemaking services can be paid by the provincial health plan, insurance plans or on a private pay basis.

IV Therapy VON’s IV Therapy Program delivers skilled nursing care and teaching to individuals in need of intravenous medications and/or solutions to manage and maintain their health. These services are provided in the comfort of the client’s home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The nurse encourages the client’s independence or the family’s or caregiver’s assistance in administering IV, or using a pump.

The nurse monitors a client’s progress and communicates with the health care team members.

Evening Visits VON’s Evening Visits are scheduled until midnight.

VON is not, however, an emergency service.

Clients and their caregivers are always advised to contact 911 in a life-threatening situation.

The evening team provides nursing services for: • Clients who work during the day.

• Caregivers and families who are not available during the day.

• Clients being discharged from hospital in the evening.

• Clients requiring more than one daily visit.

School Program VON can help meet the child’s health care needs in the school.

Foot Care Program Foot Care services are essential for active people, people with diabetes, people with heart and circulatory problems, seniors and people with tired and sore feet.

This program helps people improve their mobility and wellness by providing professional foot care services either in their homes or at one of VON's community foot care clinics located throughout Thunder Bay. There is a fee for the service, which may in some cases, be submitted to private insurance when available. Client support, community sponsorship, donations and fund-raising contribute to the success of this program so the user fees can remain affordable.

VON nurses provide a wide range of services such as: • Examination of feet and legs • Treatment of ingrown toenails and thick nails • Calluses and corn care • Trimming and filing of nails • Feet exercises and massage • Preventive care and health teaching • Infection care • Referral Services

Social Work VON's Social Workers have specialized counseling skills to assist individuals and families who are experiencing stress, losses, or problems resulting from illness or disability. Arrangements can be made to have the service provided in your own home at a time suitable to you.

Services Available The Medical Social Worker provides service related to the psychosocial stresses caused by illness/disability, for both clients and family members.

Some of the stresses experienced may include physical limitations, pain and distress due to loss of social control, change of lifestyle and relationships, and financial cutback.

Worker: The Social W orker: • Provides confidential counseling to assist with coping and solving problems • Provides information on the effects of stress on families: e.g. chronic illness, grief • Consults with other health care professionals • Acts as a resource, and communicates with other community agencies All VON Social Workers are Registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.

Physiotherapy All VON Physiotherapists are members of the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.

Services Available • Physical assessment for the purpose of providing therapy • Design exercise programs to maintain or increase strength, endurance, coordination, and range of motion • Use heat, cold, acupuncture, laser, ultrasound or other physical means to provide treatment • Instruct clients in daily activities such as climbing stairs, transfers, etc.

• Teach clients/families and caregivers about personal care, ways to prevent injury, and ways to maintain your activity level • Consult with other health team members of the health care team • Assess for walkers, canes, wheelchair, scooters, and bath aides as well as complete ADP forms for mobility aides • Orthotic assessment and fitting

Wellness Clinics VON Thunder Bay works with many community partners and local pharmacy stores in promoting healthier lifestyles in our communities. Throughout Thunder Bay, Kenora, Rainy River Districts, VON Nurses are delivering wellness education clinics to the public on a variety of health related topics including: Nutrition, Stress Management, Arthritis/Back Pain & Care, Asthma/Allergy Awareness, Migraines, Healthy Heart, Menopause, Cancer Awareness, Diabetes, Medication Safety/ First Aid/Falls Prevention, Skin Care, etc. People are encouraged to bring their questions and related medications to the education clinics.

VON Thunder Bay continues to work in the community to increase the public’s awareness of their own blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol levels. As part of continuity of care, VON has a Personal Wellness Card which encourages people of all ages to record and monitor their own personal readings and discuss them with their family physician.

Workplace Wellness As part of workplace wellness, VON's Influenza Immunization Program encourages companies in Thunder Bay and District to help reduce sick time and improve the health of their employees.

VON conducts on site workplace clinics from November through January of each year.

VON Thunder Bay is dedicated to promoting wellness in the workplace. VON has provided nursing services in the workplace to assist the Occupational Health Nurse in her duties or provide short term replacement. VON works with local companies to help them identify health related topics that are of interest to their employees. Examples include glucose and cholesterol testing and blood pressure clinics. Healing Therapies Therapeutic Touch Therapeutic Touch is a contemporary interpretation of several healing practices and uses an energy based technique.

The Therapeutic Touch practitioner uses the hands as a focus to facilitate the healing process. Therapeutic Touch is an intentionally directed process of energy exchange. A Therapeutic Touch treatment is about 15-20 minutes.

Through application of pressure on these reflexes, Reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation and helps promote the natural function of the related areas of the body.

How does Reflexology work?

The theory of how Reflexology works lags behind the practical effects. A generalized concept is that when we stimulate the reflex points, the body’s natural energy works the nervous system, meridians, and other mechanisms to clear any blockages thus reflexology helps the corresponding zones to normalize.

The VON Adult Day Centre ~ A Plus Place For Older Persons ~ Goals of the Program To provide a daytime program for socially isolated or physically or medically challenged individuals over 55 years, which will help them maintain their health, abilities, and independence as long as possible. It also provides day respite for family or caregivers.

The Adult Day Centre is located at the Hilldale Gardens Retirement Living at 309 Hilldale Road, Thunder Bay, ON. • Social Programming • Individualized therapeutic programs • Small Groups • Recreational • Social • Intergenerational • Health Monitoring and Teaching • Outings • Nutritional Assessment and Counselling • Other Surprises!

The Gift of Giving Volunteering Volunteer programs are a very important part of fulfilling VON's mission of helping people stay active and independent in their homes and communities. As a charitable organization, VON Thunder Bay is grateful to our dedicated volunteers who give a generous gift of their time and expertise.

Volunteers meet new people, learn new skills, make a difference in their communities.

VON Thunder Bay has a variety of volunteer opportunities to offer: ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT: This type of volunteering is done during regular office hours at the VON office or at off-site locations.

Volunteers also work at community foot care clinics throughout Thunder Bay. BOARD/COMMITTEE MEMBERS: People who are interested in this level of volunteering choose to make a greater commitment of time. The Board and Committees usually meet in the evenings and the number of meetings will depend on the activities of VON Thunder Bay. FUND RAISERS: VON Thunder Bay’s fund-raising program is supported by annual appeal campaigns and planned special events throughout the year. Volunteers are always appreciated to help arrange these events and to raise funds for specific VON programs and services.
