YOURS TO TAKE HOME

Welcome Patients and Visitors I’d like to take a moment to personally welcome you to Rouge Valley Health System. Whether you are a patient or a visitor, you should know that delivering the best patient care is our priority at Rouge Valley Centenary in east Toronto and at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering in west Durham. It is also our vision to be the best at what we do. This is not a task that our team of health care professionals takes lightly. Rik Ganderton President & C.E.O.

We pride ourselves on our quality patient care services. Both of our hospital campuses have fully-supported Emergency Departments equipped to serve the acute care needs of our rapidly-growing and richly-diverse communities.

Rouge Valley Health System is designated as a regional centre for cardiac care and offers excellent programs in emergency care at both hospital campuses, Mental Health, Surgery, Complex Continuing Care, Maternal and Newborn Services and more. Constant improvement is our mantra at Rouge Valley Health System. In fact, the hospital is recognized for our ongoing application of Lean management and methods by the Central East Local Health Integration Network and the broader health care industry. Some fine examples of Lean results by the Rouge Valley team include: • Patients going home sooner thanks to improved patient flow and discharge planning at both hospital campuses; • Patients and doctors getting lab test results faster; • Patients waiting less for care in the Emergency Department; • Improving patient transfers from hospital to home, nursing home, or to an alternate level of care. Our staff and physicians are dedicated to improving for you, our patients and communities. Rik Ganderton President and CEO

2.0 General Patient and Visitor Information 2.1 Visiting Hours Visiting hours at Rouge Valley Health System are from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. We ask all patients to invite only two visitors as a time, as a courtesy to our other patients and to minimize noise. Visitors may also be asked to leave a patient’s room in order to proceed with medical care or treatments. Each evening, there is an announcement reminding visitors that visiting hours will soon come to an end. In some circumstances, it is important for a family member to stay with the patient overnight. Please discuss this option with your nurse, and be sure to obtain a temporary visitor’s pass from the nursing station. Some units have special hours and visiting restrictions, such as Emergency, Maternal Newborn Services, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Coronary Care Unit (CCU). Please check with staff in these areas for times and any age restrictions. Legend:

3.0 Being a Patient at Rouge Valley 3.1 Checking in at Admitting The first thing to do when you arrive at the hospital as a patient is to check in at Admitting. There, you will register and provide the information we need to begin taking care of you. Here is a list of items you should bring: • Your Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card; • Any medications you are using, including pills, inhalers, creams or eye drops; • Your clothes and personal hygiene items, such as a toothbrush, shaving kit, and similar items (if you wear dentures, don’t forget your denture case, and/or if you wear contacts, don’t forget your contact lens case and solution); and • Your private health insurance information, if you have private insurance (those with private insurance still need to sign hospital insurance forms upon registration). Please note that different patient care areas may require you to bring additional items. So you should check with staff in your specific area regarding what you should bring when you are admitted before you arrive at the hospital. There are also a number of items that you should not bring with you to the hospital. Here is a helpful list of items that should be left at home: • Your valuables and jewellery (it’s best to leave such items at home or ask your family to take care of them, because with so many people coming into and out of the hospital, we simply cannot take responsibility for lost or stolen items); • Cell phones, laptop computers or televisions; and/or • Any electrical equipment including radios, electric shavers and other appliances (these may interfere with the medical equipment, and put other patients’ safety at risk). www.rougevalley.ca

15

3.2 Know Your Care Givers During your hospital stay you will meet a variety of health care professionals and support staff team members. You can identify them by their Rouge Valley Health System photo ID badges. The best person to help you with any concerns you may have is a member of the health care team on your unit. Just ask your nurse or the unit manager for assistance.

3.3 Waiting Unfortunately, waiting is part of being in a hospital. While we do our very best to make any delays as short as possible, you and your family are bound to experience some waiting time. If you are waiting with children, please bring some toys that they can play with quietly. You may also want to bring a book for yourself. These things will help pass the time and reduce tension.

3.4 Staying in the Hospital 3.4.1 Patient Rooms Rouge Valley Health System offers three types of accommodation for patients who are admitted to the hospital: 1. Ward - Four patients to a designated room 2. Semi-private - Two patients to a designated room 3. Private - One patient to a designated room OHIP covers the standard ward rate, but not the additional cost of private or semi-private rooms. If you want a private or semi-private room, you will pay the difference between the standard ward rate and the accommodation you choose. Sometimes the private or semi-private rooms are all occupied. If you ask for one and it’s not available you will be booked into whatever is available. Then, if the type of room you prefer becomes available later, we’ll arrange for you to be transferred.

16

Patient Services Directory

3.4.2 Meals Nutritionally balanced meals are provided to patients three times daily. If you have any nutritional concerns or special dietary needs, please ask for a visit from a dietitian.

3.4.3 Nurse Call System The nurse call system will be explained when you are admitted to your room. Should you need help, you may use it to call the nursing station. If you have questions about this, please ask any member of your health care team.

3.4.4 Fire Alarms If you hear a fire alarm, it may just be our regular monthly fire drill. Stay in your room, close the door (if you are able) and await instructions from the staff. If it is more than just a drill, and the area you are in is at risk, staff will arrive quickly to assist you. Patients who need help to leave will be taken out by the staff, while those who can go on their own will be told to do so. If you are told to leave the area, use the stairs and exit outside. Do not use an elevator.

3.4.5 Medical Students As a community hospital, Rouge Valley Health System accepts medical students and students in health-related disciplines, such as nursing and physiotherapy. The students, like all our staff, can be identified by their hospital ID badges. If students are involved in your care, you will be introduced to them. The students are knowledgeable and well supervised by senior staff. However, as a patient, you have the right to refuse to have a student involved in your care. It’s your choice.

3.4.6 Telephone Usage Patient telephones are available for incoming calls from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. To access an outside line, please press ‘9’ before dialling a number. To make a long distance call using a credit card or calling card, please press ‘0’ for operator assistance.

3.4.7 Television Rentals Television rentals are available through Hospitality Network, a long-standing television service provider in the Canadian health industry. Patients and their families can call the following numbers from within the patient room to set up their television service through Hospitality Network’s automated system:

3.5 Going Home 3.5.1 Planning for Your Discharge Discharge planning begins as soon as you arrive at the hospital (this includes the Emergency Department). Your health care team will help you and your family develop plans for your follow-up care after you are discharged from the hospital. Social workers can provide information on a number of community support services. If you would like to speak with someone from the social work team, ask any member of your health care team, and they will direct you to the social worker assigned to your unit. At Rouge Valley, patients are generally discharged between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. (these times may vary in certain units, so please check with the unit clerk). To ensure the best use of our resources, we ask that you arrange for transportation home prior to your date of discharge. Your bed will be used by another patient requiring hospital care, so promptness is much appreciated. Be certain to take all of your personal possessions with you. Before leaving, please visit the Business Office/Cashier’s Office (or Emergency Registration after business hours) to pay any outstanding hospital bills. Please note that, unfortunately, Rouge Valley cannot reimburse families for taxi fares or ambulance fees to go home.

3.5.2 Home Care Services A patient’s recovery often continues after returning home. For such patients, the local Community Care Access Centre provides home care services. These services may be arranged before discharge or after returning home. To contact the local Community Access Centre, please use the following phone numbers: • While at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus, call ext. 3370. • From home in Durham Region, call the Central East Community Care Access Centre at 905-430-3308 ext. 3500. • While at Rouge Valley Centenary, call ext. 7340. • From home in Scarborough, call the Scarborough Community Care Access Centre at 416-750-2444.

3.6 Paying Your Bill 3.6.1 Fees and Uninsured Charges OHIP pays the cost of most hospital services provided to Ontario residents with valid OHIP cards. Canadian residents with health cards from other Canadian provinces are also covered. If you are insured in another province, we will process an inter-provincial claim on your behalf. Non-residents of Canada as well as Canadian residents without a provincial health card must pay for all charges. Fees are based on the rates established by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and are due when services are received. Even for those patients who are covered by OHIP, there are still some items not covered, and you will have to pay for them. These items include: • The extra cost of a private or semi-private room (you may have private insurance that covers this); • Television rental; • Circumcision ; • Respite care; • Ambulance charges; • Cosmetic surgery; • Crutches, canes, and casts; and • Uninsured procedures. Anticipated bills for cosmetic surgery or other treatments not covered by OHIP can be paid to the admitting clerk when you are admitted to the hospital. Bills can also be paid at the emergency registration desk seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Please refer to our price list brochure for specific fees.

3.7.3 Stay Informed At Rouge Valley Health System, we want our patients and visitors to be well informed about their care or the care of their loved ones. One way to find out what you need to know is simply to ask a member of the health care team. But you can also find information yourself through the following resources: • The Tom Leon Health Resource Centre, in The Court lobby at Rouge Valley Centenary, is an electronic library for patients, their families, and the community. This unique service offers current health and medical information in everyday language. Staff and trained volunteers are there to help people do research using a consumer health database, reference books and the Internet. You can visit the centre or call in with your health questions, and your research is kept confidential. There are minimal charges for printouts or photocopies. Call 416-281-7285 for hours of service. • Be sure to also visit our website at www.rougevalley.ca. Our site offers a wealth of information about our hospital, including more common procedures, types of care and developments.

3.8 Special care arrangements 3.8.1 Lifeline Lifeline is a personal response and support service that helps people with special medical problems, including the elderly or infirm, to live independently with peace of mind. Clients are provided with a wearable push-button device they can activate in an emergency. For example, if the person falls down and cannot get up, she or he can send a signal that reaches the Lifeline Response Centre, which will then send help. To find out more about Lifeline call any of the following numbers: • Toronto - 416-445-3387 • Durham - 1-800-707-2206 • Other regions - 1-800-387-8120.

3.8.2 Pet Therapy It’s a medical fact that affectionate interaction with a pet helps healthy people to stay healthy and sick people to feel better. It reduces blood pressure and provides a sense of wellbeing. Both of our hospital campuses bring in pet therapy dogs, with their handlers, to visit patients who wish to take advantage of this service. The pet therapy dogs bring cheer when they visit. Please ask the nurse about their schedule.

3.8.3 Private Nursing & Private Nursing Assistant Care In cases where inpatients or their families want private nursing care, the hospital works with local nursing and nursing assistant agencies to arrange it. If you are interested in this, please contact the unit clerk on the patient floor. The clerk will connect you with a nursing agency, which will confirm whether your insurance covers the cost or not, and if it doesn’t, what the cost will be to you. Early identification could save your baby’s life, and is the key to effective treatment.

These are all part of the admission process for any new patient on the unit.

Visitors We ask that visitors consider the needs of the patient and their families/ caregivers. Please visit patients during our regular visiting hours, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. After these hours, when you are visiting patients on a unit, please be sure to sign in and out at the nursing station.
