I have always loved fashion, and rom coms, which led me to LOVE all things bridal. So basically I just love, love! So once my little sister got engaged and I went dress shopping with her, I saw a gap missing in our area that really provided that one on one bridal experience. I decided to take a leap of faith, move back from home, and open the bridal store that I thought our area needed! Here I am on year five, we have moved to a larger location, and I couldn't be more grateful for all our brides and all the support along the way!
Victoria Holland, known as Tori, is the owner and founder of Birch On Main, a premiere wedding wear boutique in Huntsville, Alabama. You will see her gorgeous wedding wear throughout this issue, as her boutique has graciously lent gown after gown for our features. Tori is a brilliant business woman, a kind heart, and a leader in our local wedding industry. We had the privilege to sit down with her and pick her brain about upcoming wedding wear trends for 2024 and get the inside scoop on finding the perfect fit for your perfect day. Tori, what do you love about the wedding fashion industry? I love helping each bride find their perfect bridal style and seeing the smiles on their face when they find THE dress, it is such a special moment I will always cherish. I also love being able to customize a dress to fit each brides dream! Traveling for bridal fashion week isn't bad either! Audrey, you are one of Tori’s right hand ladies and a manager at Birch on Main. What is your favorite wedding dress style? I am in a ballgown era right now! I have always loved the clean, elegant look, considering that's what I got married in! Even though I have always loved the sleek, fitted looks, I am really into ballgowns right now, because when else do you get to wear one?! Tori, all of your dresses are so lovely. How do you choose what to bring into the shop? Our dresses are lovingly hand selected each season from some of the best designers with our brides in mind! We are proud to boast a selection of unique, modern, classic, and stunning pieces straight from the New York, Australia, Chicago, and Barcelona Runways. It is always so hard not to buy every dress we see but we are always looking for the latest and greatest designs for our Birch Brides! What advice do you have for clients looking for their perfect dress? Come in with an open mind and ready to find your dream dress! You may end up loving something you didn't expect, and once you find a dress you love do not be afraid to say "yes to the dress!" We also highly recommend only bringing the people you absolutely could not say yes without. Bringing too many people can be over whelming and super confusing with so many opinions, and make the dress shopping experience stressful rather than exciting and fun like it should be! Are there any specific dress designers or brands that are exclusive to your shop? We have several dress designers that are exclusive to Birch On Main! That is one of the things we look for when choosing new designers! Some of the designers that are exclusive to our store are Dany Tabet,
Estee Couture, Elizabeth Lee, Samantha Woo, Jenny Yoo, and Zavana Bridal. Starting this year, we have a Birch On Main exclusive line that Tori and Audrey have lovingly created for our Birch Brides only! How far in advance should clients start shopping for their wedding wear? We usually suggest brides start shopping 10-12 months before their wedding, since we special order all wedding gowns and they can take 6-8 months to arrive! What type of wedding wear can clients find at Birch On Main? Since the move to our new location, we have been able to add tuxedos and suits for all the grooms or for any special occasion. As well as being able to now dress and serve our beautiful mother of the bride/grooms and grandmothers! We can dress your whole “I do crew”; we proudly carry a beautiful bridesmaid line whose quality is unmatched. We can complete any bridal look with beautiful accessories, veils, and bridal merch! Tell us about the wedding wear trends for 2024 The new 2024 bridal season is very artistic! We are seeing lots of floral elements, structural details like pickups, drop waists, one shoulders, tiered skirts and bows. We are seeing either maximalist dresses, or very minimal, classic gowns. Vintage lace is making a comeback with clean silhouettes and no sparkle. Either way, no matter your style, there is a dress for you!

“Flowers untouched by time.”
As a wedding florist, my clients ask me regularly what to do with their florals after the big day to preserve them. I decided to consult an expert for some sage advice on this matter. Rachel Croxall is the owner of Blossom & Rhyme, one of the nation's largest and most trusted floral preservation companies, located in Chattanooga, TN.. She kindly allowed us a tour of her studio and welcomed my floral preservation queries with open arms 23

Rachel, how did Blossom & Rhyme get it’s start?
What type of floral preservation do you do?
I started preserving small botanicals in necklaces during the pandemic in 2020. I needed something to do while the world felt silent and dull. I wanted to bring small amounts of joy to people anywhere I could find it.
We offer a 3-D experience of viewing your flowers from all sides within resin preservation. Within this category we also handcraft custom, floral furniture. We make side-tables and coffee tables with your flowers as well as smaller functional items like bookends and trays! We may or may not be launching a second way of preserving your bouquet in January of 2024!
I started selling my necklaces in early 2020 and they immediately showed popularity. I wrote poems to go with each floral necklace in order to connect more with my clients. It brought me so much joy to see others hold my art close to their heart.. I remember one return client saved all the poems I wrote and would read them to her daughter at night before bed. I knew I wanted to preserve flowers and write poetry for a career, but it felt like such a huge journey ahead of me. I lost my job at a wedding venue I was working at and was left at a crossroad of what to do next. I could either go back to school, or pursue this dream. I prayed for a few days about it and asked the Lord for a clear sign of what to do next. A few days later a video of mine that was shared on a large account reached over 20 million views! I couldn't believe it. I took this as a sign to go full time with my dream of preserving flowers and writing poetry for all the love stories I would soon hear of. My family and I responded to over 500 emails in three days. This is what started Blossom & Rhyme! After years of continued blood, sweat, and tears that I poured into Blossom, I have experienced exponential growth and have moved a 5,500 square foot studio with 14 passionate employees keeping this dream alive with me. We have been featured on tv, in magazines, and spread like wildfire within the wedding industry. Tell me about your preservation process:
The process is simple from a client's standpoint! 1. Place your order through our website 2. Ship your blooms overnight to our studio! (or a local drop off in Chattanooga) Shipping instructions will be attached to your order confirmation email immediately after booking. The fresher the blooms, the better the final product will look. We will unbox your flowers, send you photos of them and put them in the drying process. 3. We will design your flowers once they are dried fully and send you a free design to approve or give us a few edits. 4. Your flowers will be preserved & packaged within the following months. 5. Your bouquet is shipped back to you to hold for forever!
Why should couples preserve their wedding flowers? I always tell couples that my top piece of advice after working in the wedding industry for 5 years would be to invest in what lasts longer than 24 hours! I remember feeling this feeling after my wedding day of "Wow, all of that planning for one day." Don't get me wrong, it was the best day of my life, but there was nothing left besides a few leftover jars of honey that I had as wedding favors, my wedding dress, our vows and my wedding photos. Everything was gone in the blink of an eye. Luckily, my mom hung my flowers to dry upside down in her closet. They turned brown, but are still sentimental to this day. Invest in services that will last a lifetime. Floral preservation is different from every other wedding service because this is more than just a service, it is a custom heirloom that will last for generations. 25

We know that quality products take time and money. Can you tell us what goes into the cost of having florals preserved after a client's wedding? This is a great question! I want to be very clear that floral preservation is not something to risk a DIY on. I was a DIY bride myself, but this is a tricky balance of science and luxury, custom art. It can be dangerous and expensive working with resin. If you added up all the materials you would need to preserve your bouquet, it would cost about the same if not, more than actually purchasing from a professional. Floral preservation, when done by a professional, trusted, company is not cheap. It is notorious for being an investment. We use a state of the art, UV resistant resin that is the best in the market. We have 14+ employees producing and quality controlling your products. Our molds and materials are of the highest quality and all handmade mostly in the US. Safe & custom made packaging for you to have a one of a kind experience of seeing your bouquet again after your wedding. This will include a poem to match your love story! We also try to be as sustainable as possible with our packaging design. We have trained, in-house color correction specialists that enhance the color of your flowers after they dry just in case the color changes too drastically for your taste. We have a storefront for you to conveniently shop and drop off your flowers.
As a florist, my clients always ask "What do I do after my wedding with my flowers to preserve them?" If a client wants to have a professional preserve their florals, what instructions should I give them? The fresher the flowers arrive to us, the better! Keep the flowers in water and out of direct sunlight until time of shipment. Assign a family member, friend or wedding planner to overnight the flowers the next day that your shipping carrier is open. You will receive shipping instructions via your confirmation email directly after booking. A few tips: Do not wrap flowers in plastic of any kind. We recommend a box with a brown packing paper "nest" along with a few ice packs at the bottom to keep things cool. We also recommend wrapping the stems in damp paper towels so they can have a drink of water on their journey to Blossom & Rhyme studio! Do preserved flowers require any maintenance or upkeep? They do not require any major upkeep at all! Like anything, it can collect dust over time. Use a gentle cleanser (I love the Molly Maids brand), water, and a gentle cloth to clean it off as needed. Keep your preservation out of direct sunlight. Do florals preserved in resin turn yellow? If so, how do clients delay that process? All resin will develop an amber glow over time, yes! In my opinion it almost looks like flowers during "golden hour" or a sunset. Your preservation will always be transparent even if it yellows some. We use a very high quality resin that slows this process of yellowing, or prevents it altogether. After working with thousands of brides, we have gotten very minimal emails regarding this. Maybe two or three clients in almost 4 years! WILLOW & PINE WEDDINGS

How long does it take to preserve a clients wedding florals? Our turnaround time can be up to eight months due to the tedious process and a waiting line of clients. Most of the time we are able to get orders out at the four month mark though. Please know that your flowers are safely stored in a climate controlled area after they are dried until time of design and preservation. What is your favorite product that Blossom & Rhyme provides? I absolutely love our 12x12 blocks and side tables! Both products provide ample space for the designers to get the most out of your bouquet. We do not feel as restricted when designing and they always turn out so beautifully. Can you work with air-dried flowers or "old" flowers? Yes! We get dried flowers all the time and are able to preserve them just as well. We can even add in fresher flowers that we keep here in stock at the studio to bring life back to them a bit!
What Type of flowers preserve the best? Oh man, LOTS! Delphinium, any type of roses, stock, billyballs, wax flower, ranunculus, hydrangea, dahlias (my favorite flower), anemones (if shipped quickly), and most peonies. What are your most popular preservation items? Ten by Ten Block Nine Inch Hexagon Floral Trays 27

Am I able to preserve other items in my preservation? Yes! We work with pendants, ribbon, jewelry, etc. Make sure to make these very clear to us when you ship them though. We would hate for it to get mixed in with the packaging. There are instructions about keepsakes & pendants in our shipping instructions. Do you have payment plans? Yes! Colleen Gagnon is a professional Makeup Artist (MUA) based in Huntsville, Alabama. With twelve years of experience in her pocket, she has quite a bit to share about wedding day makeup and preparing your skin for your day under the spotlight. We had the chance to delve deep on skin prep with Colleen and learned so much to share with you. 29

Colleen, how did your get started in this industry? I went to school for makeup for film and television at the Joe Blasco Makeup Artist Training Center in Orlando, Florida. After working in Central and South Florida for a little while, I moved home back to Alabama and quickly started building my clientele. I’ve worked on many film and television projects through out Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia. Bridal makeup seems to be my favorite, though. I love being a big part of a bride’s day. It’s always so fun! I currently work at House of Belle located in Huntsville.
Definitely stay away from any harsh peels too close to the wedding. The last thing we want is healing or irritated skin on your wedding day. Definitely moisturize daily and exfoliate no more than twice a week. Your makeup will sit so much better and look smoother when your skin is properly hydrated and exfoliated. What about the day before the wedding? Try not to indulge too much on the cocktails. Alcohol is very dehydrating which will wreck havoc on your skin. What kind of skin prep should clients do the day of the wedding?
What lead you to become a MUA? In high school I was on dance team and I loved performing but I especially loved designing and applying makeup looks. I always practiced on my friends and helped my team mates with lashes and performance applications. I never really knew what I wanted to do after school but I always had a passion for makeup and knew I had to make it my career.
This is the day you want to relax as much as possible. Cleanse the skin as usual and moisturize. Maybe even pop on a hydrating sheet mask or under eye masks.
You do a lot of work in the wedding industry. How far in advance should our readers start preparing their skin for the big day, and what should they prioritize? Skin prep is the most important thing you can do for your big day. Regular exfoliating (about twice a week) is a must, as well daily cleansing and moisturizing. We can get fancy with the serums and facials but I suggest, at the very least, start a regular skincare routine as soon as you can. Hydrate from within, too. I always tell my brides to drink as much water as you can and your skin will thank you! Can you tell us what clients need to be doing the weeks before their wedding? Drink lots of water and eat plenty of fruits and veggies. What you put into your body is just as important as what you put on your skin. If you already get regular facials try to schedule one the week before your wedding. You don’t want to schedule one too close to the big day so your skin can heal from any extractions.

What products do you recommend clients use to prep their skin for makeup? Any kind of moisturizer with hyaluronic acid (HA) will work wonders! HA is like a moisture magnet and will help your skin absorb moisture better. Even if you have oily skin, you can use a gel moisturizer with HA. What steps can our readers take to ensure their makeup lasts all day and looks fresh in wedding photos? The best way to keep your makeup on longer is having happy skin. Even if you have oily skin, the best way to maintaining your makeup application is proper skincare. Setting powder and setting sprays also really help too.

The Coconut Milk & Chamomile Cleanser cleanses the skin without stripping it. It has a built in toner so there is no need to balance the ph. It also has a little honey gel in it which is fantastic for acne prone skin. Honey is a natural antibacterial and antimicrobial so it’ll help clear out blackheads and prevent acne.
The oxygen facial mask has been my top seller. It is a gentle exfoliating mask that you let sit for about 15 to 20 mins and rinse off. It’s loaded with antioxidants which will help your skin remain youthful. The glycolic acid gently exfoliates and leaves your skin smooth.
This serum is packed with botanical hyaluronic acid which helps your skin absorb all the moisture. This serum paired with the moisturizer is a dream!
The Deep Repair Peptide Creme is my moisturizer. The peptides help with lines and wrinkles. Rosehip seed oil and vitamin E help with hydration. The formula is all natural and totally clean!

We had the opportunity to hear from her on some of the most important aspects of booking your wedding day hair and makeup and this is what she had to say:

I stumbled upon some surprises, especially when it comes to locking in your wedding hair and makeup stylist. Charlie's golden rule? Book that stylist right after you secure your venue. And you know what? I'm totally on board with that wisdom. 33

Ashley, tell us about The Stylist Abroad and what sets you apart in the wedding industry? I created The Stylist Abroad because I felt like there was a gap in the industry that direly needed to be addressed. So many couples were told to fit in a box created either by “tradition” or the industry itself; to conform to an aesthetic. Couples would be disappointed with styles that wouldn’t last & the products were harsh. Queer people (like myself) weren't seen, accepted or affirmed within the wedding industry or binary, conventional, beauty standards. People of all types we're told something wasn't "wedding appropriate". Wouldn’t it be a crazy idea for couples to embrace their beauty & to be celebrated for exactly who they are?
Celebrate those curls, do the funky faux hawk, have a veil AND an accessory! You do you. I wanted to provide a space to celebrate unique beauty, create lasting styles & use quality, ethical products. What are the most common pitfalls of scheduling hair and makeup for a wedding day? The biggest is probably a small amount of time to perform all the services. If there's a limited amount of time you may need to make sure your stylist has hired an assistant and be leery of thinking you can cram it all in but in half the time. The looks won't last as well, won't be as elevated and there's no buffer time. Another big pitfall is not allocating a budget for hair and makeup up front. Often people think you hire HMU (hair & makeup) at the end and we get the scraps of the budget (especially if you overspent elsewhere) but in reality it should be right up there with photography, venue and planner. The photos are going to be of you and you want to look your best right? Not allocating a budget and not booking right away could lead you to not having enough of a budget for your desired artist or them not being available. Final big pitfall is waiting too long. Some dates are VERY popular and we can't be in two places at once. If you fall in love with a vendor, book them as soon as you fall in love with them.
To avoid the pitfall of missing out on your dream artist, reach out early. Follow them on socials or wherever they post updates about their availability. When should clients book you for wedding hair and makeup? As soon as you find the hair and makeup artist who you feel matches your dream aesthetic and priorities. In reality the "timeline" for when for hair and makeup is bizarre. Some people feel 3-4 months prior is ok and for some months ( January, February, March) it can be as long as it's not a popular date with repeating numbers ( 2/24/24 for example). Standard is more around the 6 month mark. However if it's a popular date or popular month it's not uncommon to have dates booked a year+ in advance. For example we currently have dates in October 2024 that are fully booked out and have been since July 2023 but we still have some May 2024 availability. I personally believe, that once you have your date, location, and photographer, that the beauty services should be next. So whenever that fits into your schedule. However, IF you're reading this and feel like you've dropped the ball- don't panic! Still inquire even if it's "last minute". Like I said our schedules can be funky depending on the specific date and with a team especially you may still luck out.
What are your tips to avoid these pitfalls? To avoid the pitfall of a limited amount of time to get ready, make sure to ask your venue what time you can start (some limit the time you can arrive at the wedding suite), and then what time you need to be ready. This will determine the available time for HMUA to work. If it's a small timeframe or you have a large crew receiving services, be prepared to have an assistant. To avoid the pitfall of finding a beauty team last minute and the scraps of the budget you should prioritize them to the level you feel appropriate. Set aside an actual budget and not just the leftovers and don't wait until the last minute to research or book them.

When booking your venue what should you consider for your wedding hair & makeup? Wedding suite and access time! As I mentioned earlier the access time can really cause a chain reaction of forcing you to have an assistant or reduce services or get ready somewhere besides the venue. There are a few things that set apart a wedding suite from the rest and your vendor will appreciate it. A DREAM wedding suite has good lighting (natural preferred), neutral bright walls (white is best), ample electrical outlets, flat surface (a table or shelf), mirror (or mirror nearby), and chairs or stools that are a good height with a low back. Good lighting is a MUST. Fluorescent lighting, or no good lighting, will impact the artists' ability to do their work, slow down the day and cast funky colors when working on your makeup. Neutral bright walls such as white are ideal because they don't reflect onto the skin tone like yellow wood walls or bright green painted walls do (we've experienced both IRL) and this reflection will make it harder on your MUA. Not to mention it's nearly impossible to take a good after photo with that as the backdrop. RIP to all the stunning work to never be seen in those suites. Electrical outlets are a MUST for hairstylists because we have hot tools, and it needs to not only be plugged in, but in a place that makes sense to sit down. Hence flat surfaces (table or shelf) are a MUST as well. In case you didn't realize, we bring a LOT of things, and for an easy morning, good flow, and organization we need a place to put that. A mirror is nice otherwise you'll have to run to the bathroom to check your look. Finally there is a perfect chair and we're always so grateful when we find it! Ideally it's hydraulic and low back so we can adjust your height depending upon your height, our height, and which service. Low back allows your long tendrils to flow without being caught or rubbing. Many artists bring a chair but then the room can become very crowded.

What’s trending in the hair and makeup industry? Authenticity is trending. People are choosing more looks that really resonate with them and who they are versus artificial, simulated Kim K look. Couples still want to look and feel like themselves, just elevated. Instead we're seeing a heavy emphasis on skincare and effortless, glowing, editorial skin like that of Sofia Richie. Still, the potential for a wide variety of eye aesthetics as any (glam, natural, neutral) can be paired with a healthy skin look. For hair it is the elevated, understated, effortless looks (that are not effortless to create). It's ethereal and luxurious. Glam or fluffy waves. Braids are either big, cascading braids that don't necessarily look like braids, or they're little details incorporated as an interest point, but neither type are basic braids. People are wanting ones that they couldn't do at home. And then styles aren't tight or overly structured. Accessories are really a way for people to personalize looks and add a bit more of their wedding vibes. Pearls are still reigning popular but we've seen an uptick in art deco inspired accessories and modern, minimalist pieces as well.

Large grand weddings are perfect for couples with big personalities and a knack for being social, while small micro weddings and elopements are a wonderful fit for our more private individuals looking for an intimate romantic setting to tie the knot. 37

Katie Harris is a wedding and elopement photographer based in Cullman, Alabama. She travels all over the world shooting couples on their wedding day. Her work is strikingly beautiful and romantic with a hint of whimsical moody fun. We were lucky enough to score an interview with Katie about her elopement photography, and we think that you will be just as enchanted with the magic of elopements as we are. Katie, would you introduce yourself to our readers? My name is Katie Harris, and I'm the friendly face behind The Alabama Elopement Company and Katie Sue Photo & Film, LLC. I have been in the wedding industry for the last 5 years but my love affair with photography started long before that. My mom was a photographer in the 90s and she gifted me a point and shoot camera for my senior year of high school. I immediately fell in love with documenting memories. Fast forward to today- I still can't get enough of it. Especially couples and elopements. There's something special about capturing genuine moments between two people who are head over heels for one another. I feel incredibly blessed that I get to make a living doing something I love so much.

Did you start out doing elopement photography from the beginning? If not, what led you to elopement photography? When I started, I focused on photographing families and kids, meeting the local demand in my area. In 2019, I ventured into weddings, discovering my niche in photographing couples. As I gained experience, I found I enjoyed smaller affairs more, and I noticed the couples seemed to enjoy themselves more too. While photos are very important, I have always wanted the experience of the day to be a higher priority. When I photographed my first elopement, I thought, "why don't more couples do this?" It was so intentional, sweet, and stress-free. I know eloping isn't for everyone, but I do think elopements and microweddings have a place in the wedding industry.

Who are elopements right for? Eloping is ideal for couples who aren't huge fans of the spotlight, value stretching their wedding budget, and desire something unique and personal. It's also suitable for those who prefer a less complicated planning process and a shorter engagement. I recently got engaged and will elope in Oregon this April. For us, focusing on the essence of the day— our love and commitment to each other—is key. While we want a beautiful setting for our vows, we don't feel the need for a grand celebration. I have found that many couples share this sentiment. Eloping is also notably budget-friendly, with an average all-inclusive elopement costing between $1500 and $6500—often cheaper than a standard weekend venue rental without inclusions." This gives couples more freedom in their budget to include the things that are most important to them. What is your photography style? Inspired by film and cinematic tones, my photography style can be described as warm, nostalgic, and dreamy. What are a few of your favorite elopement stories? One of my cherished stories is Lauren & Clint's elopement in Charleston. Lauren, a close friend, entrusted me to plan everything. Her primary requests were to incorporate pink as much as possible and to enjoy a good burger on her wedding day. We began at the Starlight Motor Inn, a newly renovated (and pink) motel where Lauren got ready. Clint, in his pink suit, joined us, and we captured their first look. The day continued with portraits at The Mills House, featuring a Pink Figgy car and the city's beautiful architecture. A laid-back burger break at The Big Gun Burger Bar followed (honestly the best burger I've ever eaten). We concluded with a beach ceremony at dusk, where Willow and Pine Weddings crafted a stunning arbor filled with pink & white flowers. The tide surrounded the arbor, and the water reflected the blue sky—a truly magical scene as they exchanged vows. 39

What advice do you have for couples looking to elope that may have family members who are opposed? Eloping can be challenging for couples with family members opposed to the idea. It's essential to remember that your wedding is about you, and it's acceptable to be a bit selfish on this occasion. You can still involve your loved ones by inviting immediate family or hosting a laid-back reception a few weeks after your elopement. Do you travel for elopement photography? Absolutely! I love this question. Yes, I do travel. I've gone as far as Washington, and I'm eagerly anticipating my first international wedding in May. No location is too far! What are the pros and cons of eloping?

Eloping is intentional, unique, budget-friendly, and stress-free. There's no family drama, strict time schedules, or pressure to please others. However, it's essential to acknowledge a few cons: 1.) Potential disappointment for friends and family who may not fully support the decision. 2.) Fewer wedding gifts, although close ones may still choose to send tokens of celebration. 3.) Challenges in hiring wedding vendors due to minimum requirements. I always encourage my couples to elope on weekdays, making it easier for vendors to commit to their wedding date. What does the process look like if a client wants to book you for their elopement? If you choose to book me for your elopement, I offer a streamlined, all-inclusive planning experience. I've curated prebuilt packages that include essential vendors such as photography, videography, officiant, florals, cake, and bridal hair and makeup. Once you reach out, we'll coordinate on a date and location, and from there, we'll determine which package aligns best with your preferences. Then, I take charge of organizing the vendors and logistics, allowing you to focus on the enjoyable aspects like selecting cake flavors and the color palette. Welcome to the “Letter to the Inclusivity Editor” My name is Ashley and I am the founder and lead artist of The Stylist Abroad. It is my passion and purpose to celebrate all love, all couples and make their celebrations along with the process easier. Let’s be real, the hardest choice should be what flavor of cake to choose, not who will serve cake. I am Equally Wed Certified and founder of Inclusive Vendors of Alabama. This is your space to learn how to navigate planning a wedding with inclusive and affirming vendors, feel safe and celebrate with all the joy! Also it’s a space to submit you own questions ! Q1: What does it mean to be inclusive ? No, it’s not in reference to all-inclusive packages. It means that the vendor is inclusive of everyone. Inclusive of all genders, sexual orientations, race, religions, and cultures. They don’t just “take the money” but they truly celebrate these clients and are proud to serve them. Q2: How can I tell if a vendor is inclusive ? Overall the 3 quickest ways to tell if a vendor is inclusive are in their photos, bio and verbiage throughout.

We believe that all people (regardless of race, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, size, or ability), are worthy of love and the celebration of milestones in their lives. The vendor should celebrate all couples. Look at their photos and who do you see? Is it a wide diversity of race, religion, cultures, genders and orientations? Or is it all Cishet (cisgender heterosexual ) Christian couples? Can you easily see you and your partner in the images they share or are you trying to mold to what they’ve presented to your lived experience? Now some vendors could have lack or experience and that explains lacking photos but you have to feel out if it’s due to lack of experience or lack of commitment that they don’t post diverse couples.

You shouldn’t have to search hard to see yourself in their work. Their bio should directly say they are inclusive. It shouldn’t be elusive or mysterious. If they’re proud to work with you they should be putting it our there bluntly and boldly. What is the verbiage like across all their copy? Is it inclusive or does it fall to gender binaries? What I mean is instead of “Bride & Groom” do they instead say things like “Marriers”, “Nearlyweds”, “Couples”, etc. This should be true for their social, their websites, their inquiry form and contracts. Inquiry forms and contracts should have the option for partner(s) name(s), pronoun(s), and roles. There should be space to build your day based on your faith, cultural and personal experiences, and priorities. Q3: What if I think they’re inclusive but I’m not sure? First, I’d like to refer to above. If you’re not sure and they’re not making it obvious, do you really want to work with them when there’s vendors who do clearly celebrate? Now that’s obviously a very personal choice so let’s say there’s something about this very desirable vendor that makes you want to find out. Here’s a couple ways. Look to see if they have any industry awards, certifications or courses and have posted the badges on their website. Examples would be the Equally Wed Certification where they’ve taken a course and passed a test to become certified. Do some snooping. If it’s public then it’s fair game and ultimately you need to feel safe with the vendors you choose. You need to feel that they will, without a doubt, treat you with respect, love, and joy so if this allows you to settle any nervous doubts without directly asking this can provide some clarity. Finally, ask them directly. Someone who is proud to serve will take no offense by you doing your research and asking. If being direct makes you feel uncomfortable directly asking you can have a friend or loved one reach out or you can ask in a broad, “Can you tell me about your experience working with LGBQT+/interfaith/multicultural couples?”. Q4: What’s the difference between LGBTQ+ Inclusive and Affirming? It’s tricky since people use them so interchangeably but there is actually a difference. Inclusive is “We accept you. Come as you are. We would do business with you and would like you to do business with us”. Affirming is “ We really celebrate you, your relationship and marriage. We see you,

respect you and value you, your lived experience, pronouns and will do our work to make sure you feel seen, celebrated and safe”. Inclusive isn’t bad but affirming is better. Q5: What if I find out something about my vendor ( or they’ve done something) that makes me feel uncomfortable continuing with them because of my sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, etc? Firstly, we are so sorry you have to go through this. It’s not ok and no one should have to deal with this. It’s important to be transparent about your needs, wants and personal dynamics that are important to you in regards to sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, race, etc from the beginning. It’s important to put in writing these dynamics to where if they didn’t align at the start you wouldn’t chose them as the vendor. For example saying“ We are looking for a queer affirming HMUA team” in your inquiry. So, by agreeing to work with you they are agreeing to being affirming (and therefore creating a safe space). Now, it’s important to document what you’ve found out or what they’ve done. Depending what/how you found something out you may need to verify this is credible. However, if they said something in your presence or posted something homophobic or intolerant on social media you need to directly document ( grab that screen shot). The next step if you no longer feel comfortable working with them means that you will need to directly email about what you saw and explicitly why it makes you feel uncomfortable and unsafe. Provide the documented evidence that has made you feel unsafe and uncomfortable. Make sure they realize it’s not a “difference in opinion” but is a matter of safety and feeling as though you will receive substandard services because of their “x” and your “x”. Ask for the contract to be cancelled and retainer to be refunded as they have violated the terms and conditions from the time when it was created. It’s important for me to note that I am not a lawyer, nor is this legal advice, but I feel it is the strongest response to get what you deserve. For legal guidance please refer to ACLU or the Human Rights Campaign. Q6: How can I find inclusive vendors? Here! We value and celebrate inclusivity and diversity so you’re in the right place . Check out the Inclusive Vendors of Alabama Facebook group where there’s database and safe space to plan, inquire and refer. Are you already working with an inclusive vendor? Ask them for their recommendations. Trust me when I say word spreads that you’re inclusive and they will help you navigate who to reach out to. Also you can look to national sources such as Equally Wed, Offbeat Wed, Dancing with Her, Dancing with Them, I Do Y’all, etc.
