Thogden: The Rise of a YouTube Football Star
from North West Sport
Vlogging, a form of online video blogging, has grown exponentially over the past few years. It has become a popular way for people to share their lives and experiences with a wide audience, and has created a new wave of social media influencers and content creators.
YouTube, the world’s second-largest search engine, has played a significant role in the growth of vlogging. The platform allows anyone to create and upload videos for free, making it accessible to people all over the world. In 2005, when YouTube was first launched, it was meant as a platform for people to share their personal videos with friends and family. However, it has since grown into a platform for people to create and share content on just about any topic imaginable.

Someone who took great belief from seeing YouTube vlogging was Thogden, whose real name is Theo Ogden, an English football YouTuber and content creator with a massive following. He has become a household name among football enthusiasts with his engaging content that ranges from match reactions, football challenges, player interviews and other light-hearted videos that highlight his love for the game. The 22 year old was born in and hails from Bolton, Greater Manchester. He first found his love for vlogging at a Bolton game saying “it actually began at an FA cup game I went down to Eastly away. The club were having big financial problems and my dad took me along and I just decided to try make a video on it. I had tried making fifa videos in the past but never really got going. However I made the video at the first game and got support so I just went from there.”
Theo and his Dad Steven (Thogdad) are loyal England fans and follow them home and away as much as possible, and it was in 2018 when he became a global superstar. In just three weeks he gained a huge 400,000 subscribers and his vlog on the 2018 quarter final against Columbia gained 1.7 million views boosting his channel to football stardom while also landing himself a part in a Russian movie. He has traveled to over 15 different countries making vidoes for his fans to enjoy.
Thogden’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. He was named as one of the top ten football personalities to follow on YouTube by The Daily Mail and has been featured on BBC Breakfast and Sky Sports News.
Theo hit 1 million subscribers and set himself the goal of going to every World Cup game in Qatar. With the fame he obviously got a fair bit of criticism going over there with the human rights record of Qatar. He said “ I got the height of my criticism during the thise with people giving me hate as that used to be me giving it out and I understand where it’s coming from looking for likes. Not everyone has to watch my content there is no problem with that.” With all the grief that came his way he was still able to achieve the feet of going to every World Cup game.
The 21 year old was recently announced the youngest football club director ever after he was announced as director of Manchester 62 in Gibraltar. When asked about how that is he stated “it’s a job that takes a lot of time out of my YouTube and doing that job takes a lot of my time which is a big change.

However one thing I have learnt is how many structures there are to a football club even in the Gibraltar pro league i for sure was very surprised. It was great to be able to bring some fans on board and get them to the games and continuing to grow as a club.”
When asked about his future he said “ growing up I really liked tv shows like Top Gear and hopefully the platform I’ve created on YouTube will lead to an opportunity creating a footballing TV show with Thogdad or some other presenters I think that would be great.”
