NORTHAMPTON HISTORY 1924-1971

In 1921, due to the death of it's headmistress, the Capen School in Northampton closed. Two of it's teachers, Miss Whitaker and Miss Bement, wished to start their own school. There were several possibilities open to them: they could purchase the land formerly used by the Capen School, or they were offered some property by the Mills River by George Cable, a Northampton real estate agent. This second offer was initially rejected because the land is sloping and would have limited athletic activities. However, the president of Smith College, Mr. Neilson, volunteered the use of Smith's athletic facilities.

Now Miss Whitaker and Miss Bement had the problem of raising the money for the school. It was made a legal company, Northampton Preparitory School Inc., and efforts were made to sell the stocks. After approximately twenty thousand dollars of stocks were sold, Mr. Cable's offer was going to be accepted. A new problem then presented itself—Mr. Cable remarried, decided to keep the land, and withdrew his offer.

Miss Whitaker and Miss Bement would have abandonned the idea of their own school had the two houses that are now Montgomery and Hathaway House, not been for sale. A decision was made to

Purchase these two buildings, and, in 1924 the school was founded.

An advertisement was placed in the local paper for "one year girls" only, who needed an extra year of college preparation. Twenty boarders and one day girl were enrolled in the Northampton School in it's first year.

The school had little furniture and no cook. The only staff were Miss Whitaker, who did most of the cooking, etc., and Miss Bement, who did most of the teaching. There were no formal rules or regulations.

Gradually the school expanded both its physical facilities and it's curriculum until it became the fouryear preparatory school known as the Northampton School for Girls. It presently has about 150 students, over 50 faculty and staff, and ten classroom and dormatoriy buildings.

This next fall the school, will combine with Williston Academy in Easthampton. The purpose of the move is to give the students of the future years a better chance to learn and develop through opportunities provided by Williston's broader curriculum, larger faculty, and bigger facilities.

October 6, 1970

Letter to the Class of 1971:

You are a very special class, not only because of your loyalty and achievements as students, but as alumnae you will not have the familiar home and community to return to; this is sad, but you should not feel sorry for yourselves nor for us who will be working at Williston next year.

What matters in any community is the deep life within its people, and we will take most of our people and their ideas with us. I am sure that you will see Fred and Don and the kitchen staff, for instance, when you return to visit us in Easthampton. The subtle chain that links this community, then, will not be broken. We will, of course, make every effort to recreate our beautiful environment at Williston; we are moving to a very attractive new campus, and we may even take the gardens with us! But remember that it is the friends you have made here among teachers and students that insures the spirit of NSFG wherever it may be.

As I write this letter the leaves have just begun to yellow, our first 3-week reports come in Friday, and we sleep late for the first time tomorrow. Although we have only begun, I know this year will surpass all: our house is in order, our faculty and staff are all talented and experienced, and every member of the community shows unbounded enthusiasm, loyalty, and good humor.

All the best to you, and please pay us a visit next fall.

A

TIME TO MOURN . .

"And as I went up into the mountains I met a blind man. He was wearing a blue cloak about his shoulders, and in his hand he carried a long stick of polished wood. Where are you going, my friend? he asked. Into the region of the mystery I answered. What takes you there. I cannot tell you that."

a time to refrainfrom embracing. .

a time to seek. .

A TIME TO KEEP SILENCE . . .

a time to speak.
