MR. PAUL A. MANN

To the Class of 1963

Dear Seniors,

You are the first class whom I have called by that title, and as such you will always occupy a very special place for me. I also feel most sincerely that you held a unique place in school.

You have supplied us all with fine leaders whom we have been glad to follow. You have set the "tone" for the school not only by your academic efforts which have been great but also by your sincere interest in the well-being of your fellow students. For these qualities we are all most grateful.

I personally have even more reason to be grate-

ful because of the kindness you have shown to me throughout the year. I have much appreciated all the consideration and the support you have given me.

We shall all miss the Class of 1963 at Northampton. Our thoughts will go with you during the coming years, and there will always be a warm welcome awaiting you here.

Affectionately,

DORIS N. ANDERSON

Alma Mater

When we've put long years behind us, And our girlhood days are o'er, Let there be some class to greet us, When we come back to the door. Friendship's ties that cannot sever, Though our ways be far apart, Hold thee in our hearts forever, 'Twas from thee we made our start.

Thou it was who reared and taught us, Sent us out upon life's way. And to thee we'll e'er be grateful, Though we've been long years away. Now to thee our tribute raises; We'll be with thee to the end, And we'll always sing thy praises, Alma Mater, School and Friend.

Dedication

"A perfect woman, nobly planned, To warn, to comfort, and command; And yet a Spirit still, and bright With something of angelic light."

As we leave Northampton we shall always remember your patience, your guidance and your understanding, and most of all, your constant support through these past years. You have never failed us, and for this we shall always be grateful. The class of 1963 dedicates its yearbook to you, Mrs. Buker.

As "Seniors Are We" resounds through the halls of "Hamp", the mighty twelfth grade moves onward toward the finale of its high school years. During the fall term we were occupied with college preparations. December proved to be a successful month. We faced our final S.A.T.'s, supported the Bazaar with a decorative candy booth, and sang Christmas carols to the neighboring houses in subzero temperatures.

We returned in January, rested and ready to make the remainder of the semester a success. The last College Boards passed, ancl so did the winter term with one noticeable event—a gala party to celebrate Miss Carlson's birthday.

As Spring vacation approached, we anticipated our "last lap" in this hectic year—the Prom, the Crowning of the May Queen, Phoenix Night, Baccalaureate, Step-Sing, and finally Commencement.

This year has been an experience we will never forget. We have grown in mind, in character and in maturity into young women, well-prepared to take a new and exciting step.

"Yours is the exceptional class" and naturally, we have many exceptional memories. The days have been filled with such "memorable" events as trying to raise money for our worthy class by selling pajama bags, and food at the Middler Snack Bar. This has been a year of grinding work and harsh discipline—Boards and S.A.T.'s; fifty vocab. words a week; Faerie Queene and more Faerie Queene; weekly trips to Forbes and fact cards by the megatons. But our class has spirit, size, and brains—we shall attack college applications wrni VIGOR, we shall storm over from Lee to Hathaway, and N.S.F.G. will bear our distinctive stamp on her record for all the years to come.

Throughout the year, the Junior Middler class has participated in various school functions: During the fall, the Junior and Junior Middler classes combined in giving a tea in honor of Miss Anderson, the new principal. The occasion proved meaningful to both students and faculty. Every year, the project of selling candy at recess is entrusted to the sophomore class. With part of the money acquired from this, the class chooses to leave a sum of fifty dollars to be invested in new books for the library. Another sum of ten dollars was left to the Junior class, as it had little money in its treasury at the beginning of the year. The key to class success lies in the cooperation among members of a given body. By cooperating one with another, each Junior—Middler has helped in making this year the best possible.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Hussey, this year's Junior class has shown spirit and enthusiasm in all school activities. Both Stronach House and the class sponsored a table at the Bazaar. It has been well represented in the various singing groups, clubs, and teams. The members of the class have worked on Operation Scott Hall. They have maintained the fine standards set by Juniors ever since the class of 1959 originated the project.

The class also sponsored a hobby show in which each girl exhibited her favorite hobby. This project was shared and appreciated by the rest of the student body, the faculty, and the girls' parents.

The

Student Council

The Student Council consists of the President, the Vice-President, Secretary, Social Secretary, Athletic Association President, Christian Association President, Class Presidents, House Presidents, Day Girl Representatives, and House Procters. All except the last are elected by the students. These girls meet once a week after school with Miss Carlson who acts as an advisor and a liaison

between the faculty and the students. Any problem which involves the student body is discussed and decided upon here. Also considered here are requests from the faculty and those of individual students.

A few times a year there is a joint council. At this time the principal, Miss Anderson, is invited to attend a meeting in order to see how Council is functioning and to bring up anything she feels should be reviewed.

At times when Council thinks it necessary, there is an open council to which all students and faculty are invited. The Council meets in the regular way and at this time the students may see how their Student Council functions and at the same time participate in the discussion. Later they themselves may ask any questions they may have.

The Council tries to be a guiding factor in the student body, a group which works as a committee that discusses suggestions which concern the school. An example of this may be illustrated by the efforts to change the point system. In time it is presented to the Student Government at which time the student body may discuss and review the matter at hand. In short, the Student Council is a representation, vital to the school as a group, which organizes and presents facts to the students so that campus life may function more effectively.

The Pegasus

Accuracy, reliability, speed in production—these are the ingredients which make up a good newspaper. More than ever this year "Pegasus" has been developing these qualities which have always been an integral part of the paper. Under the capable direction of Miss Brigham, the new advisor, "Pegasus" has attempted to serve more fully its vital function in the school's life.

In addition to a more complete coverage of school events, articles not directly concerned with Northampton but of interest to the students, have frequently appeared. Interviews with celebrities, and guest articles from outstanding members of the community have been included among these.

This Spring, the Editors selected the girls who would guide the paper's progress in the 1963-1964. With a rapidly expanding school,"Pegasus'" role in Northampton life has become even more dependent upon the faith and cooperation of the students and Editors.

The Christian Association has been outstandingly successful this year. Through the concentrated efforts of Miss Boerner and the C.A. president, Cheryl Wells, and the support of the students, faculty, and the public, the annual Christmas Bazaar earned over one thousand dollars. Several girls in November attended the religious conference at Northfield School. The C.A. has sent flowers to hospitalized students and faculty, and has rung the Angelus Bell.

The Glee Club

Under the direction of Miss Hill, the Glee Clubs a group of fifty girls, worked to present several concerts. Two highlights of the year were the operetta, The Mikado, and the Christmas concert, both with Williston Academy.

The Music Club has sixteen members who work together with Miss Hill to improve the qualities of individual voices and to attain a well-balanced blend when singing. The Christmas Concert with the Williston Double Quintet was the climax of a semester's work.

The Current Events Club

The Current Events Club this year enjoyed a number of enriching programs. For example, the club presented a satirical skit which offered great fun for all. In a more serious vein, a debate concerning an improtant world program was organized. Mrs. Grahame chaperoned a delegation of students to a model United Nations meeting in Boston. This experience was a most stimulating and rewarding one for the girls involved. The club also benefitted from the interesting speakers sponsored by the Alumnae Association. We are very grateful for these opportunities and for the enthusiastic guidance of Mrs. Grahame.

The French Club

One of the largest and most active clubs on campus this year was the French Club,"La Fleur de Lis." Under the guidance of M. Chalufour, the club sponsored a series of French films about the French people and their culture. All meetings were conducted in French, so one must have had at least one year of French to be a member. To do justice to French cuisine, the club had several French cafés and, to climax the year, a delicious banquet.

The Latin Club

This year the Latin Club has grown in both enthusiasm and size. The diligent work of the members produced one of the most popular and successful tables at the Christmas Bazaar. The meetings were made pleasant combinations of learning and relaxation by our advisor, Miss Wilbur, who introduced us to many Roman activities and customs. An authentic Roman banquet to which the guests wore traditional togas climaxed our busy schedule this spring. The Club would like to extend their sincere thanks to Miss Wilbur for all she has done for us this year.

The Spanish Club

The Spanish Club,"El Circulo Espanol", has had an exceedingly successful year under the capable guidance of Mrs. Peppard. Some of the club's many group activities have included the daily vending of ice cream at recess, and sponsoring a

pizza booth at the Christmas Bazaar. The Spanish Club also celebrated Christmas with cookies from all over the world and by singing Spanish Christmas carols.

"El Circulo Espanol" has also sponsored many cultural activities during the course of the school year. These events have consisted of lectures, slide programs of Spanish countries, and a Spanish movie. The Spanish Club has also donated to the school a subscription of "Life en Espanol" so that all students may benefit from it. The Club concluded its events with an annual Spanish banquet in May.

The Masque and Wig

The year was ushered in amid chuckles and laughter by a highly successful production of The Rivals. The entire school, as well as everyone who participated in the play, enjoyed the performance.

Of course, the entire school applauded club activities. For example, we relished the Masque and Wig sandwiches sold during recess, and were delighted by the class plays presented in the spring.

To Mrs. Pearce we extend much warm gratitude for her patient and invaluable guidance while she was able to be at school. We missed her so much while she was away.

This year, Masque and Wig was, once again, a refreshing and gratifying complement to school life.

The Prom Committee

The goal of the Prom Committee was to make the 1963 Prom the biggest and best ever. "Hawaii" was named the theme for this year's Prom, and decorations of draped fish nets, aqua and blue lanterns, and tropical plants were centered around the island theme. It was also the committee's job to plan the menu for the lavish dinner which was given for the Seniors before the Prom.

In order to meet its endless expenses, the committee took on many varied projects, including selling gold "NSFG" pins and hundreds of Mrs. Leland's chocolate bars. Also the annual fashion show featured clothing from Northampton stores.

This year all the classes cooperated to make the Prom a successful, school-wide event in honor of the Seniors.

First row: J. Siracusa, B. Meck, E. Craig, R. Tenander, C. Barrett. Second row: G. Ellis, J. Smith, T. Grieb, C. Welker.

The Athletic Association

This year the Athletic Association together with Mrs. Read and Miss Pickles, has tried, not only to increase the interest in sports, but also to boost the spirit of the school.

With the acquisition of the new gymnasium the A.A. has been able to sponsor many more intramural games, many of which have been decisive victories both in score and attendance! There were also more Green and White games which were well supported by both the faculty and the students.

The sports program was enlarged at 'Hamp.' A modern dance club was formed, cheerleaders were organized, swimming and skiing were initiated on Mondays.

All clubs need finances. The Athletic Association supplemented their funds by money-raising campaigns which included the sale of food at varsity games, the sale of Green and White rally pins, and its annual auction. Most of this hard-earned money was used to purchase new athletic equipment.
