"Suppose there were only one dollar in circulation," or "Suppose Massachusetts had a population of ten." No other teacher has an imagination like yours, but then, no one else has to explain, in terms we can understand, the principles of deflation, or of popular and electoral votes. You can make even the dullest discussion of "economical" matters interesting and absorbing.
You instill your love of history into your lectures, and easily weave isolated facts into one clear picture. You are always ready to show us our strong points as well as our weak ones, or to discuss colleges with us.
You have taught practically all of us at one time or another, and the class of 1959 will always remember you with gratitude and affection, as we dedicate this, our yearbook, to you, Mrs. Esty.
Greetings to the Class of 1959,
You are the thirty-fifth class that has come and gone since Northampton School for Girls first came into being. It is fun for us to look back on this long line of classes composed of girls who have given so much of themselves to make the school what it is today. As we say so often, the girls make the school. And so we are grateful to the class of 1959 for what they have contributed to this school that belongs to all of us. Good spirit, good work, good play, good companionship — all those have made your class — just as they have made the school something to cherish in our hearts and minds.
Our best wishes go with you, Miss Whitaker and Miss Bement
During her three years at Northampton School for Girls, Miss Morgan led us firmly over the difficult path leading to the mastery of the Latin lauguage. he guided us through Caesar's Wars and Virgil's poetic world, and we owe it to her vivid interpretations that the world of two thousand years ago has become reality for us. Her enthusiastic school spirit became a shining example for us, her students, and we shall always remember her as a beloved guide and able teacher.
Miss Abkarian

We, Mary Beth Adams and Debbie Carroll, in our usual post weekend mood, do leave all sleepy Mondays to Edith Nelson, play rehearsals to our understanding buddy Terry, and silence once again to the halls of Scott.
I, Cynthia Balut, leave Sue Perry my bedroom.
I, Bets Barrett, bequeath my handwriting to anyone with patience and 20-20 vision, a raincoat to Sue Perry for future Amherst games, and to Inky a few freckles.
I, Cynthia Barrington, being of questionably sound mind and too much body, bequeath my suppressed desire for an automatic chocolate-chip cookie machine in my room to Izzy and Ellen in hopes that these deserving girls will make this desire a realization next year.
I, Libby Bartlett, being of the typically 'Hamp obese, rotund form, do hereby leave all my second, third, and fourth helpings to Kathy Nagamatsu, 'cause she'd eat them anyway if my back were turned.
I, Joan Beauregard, being of floating mind and sinking body, do hereby leave my frequent trips to Ware to Emily Gilman and Suzanne Persky, in hopes that they will use them sparingly, my History of Art notes to anyone who can tolerate sloppy typing, and sorrowfully and regretfully I leave Lenox to Merry Dutton.
I, Sandra Berger, leave to Judy Fine my Thursday night telephone calls from the ...
I, Mary Blanchard, do hereby leave my locker in the library to Irene Lipski, the daily trips to and from school to Pam Squires, and my place at the dances to Mary Ann Gronostalski.
I, Betty Butterworth, being of unsound mind, most generously give to Winnie Worth and Harriet Gaston the great big duck farm, and to Ellen and Izzy I leave 100 raccoon coats and many, many weekends at Thayer dining hall, and Gregory special's (boarding houses). And, I leave all the cold, cold camp fires to those who like fires and the smell of smoke.
We, Debbie Carroll and Mary Beth Adams, in our usual good humor, regretfully leave all Williston Memories to Margie Griggs. and our organized habits to Inky Barrett and Nancy Gillies.
I, Joanne Conklin, bequeath amorously to Miss Continillo an album of music to cha-cha by.
I, Helen Copper, being of sieve-like mind and spastic body, leave my mad nick-name, "Spas", to Sue Reeves, my sometimes bothersome ability to whistle to Gay Thompson, that terrific annual weekend at the Cordingley's plus the Harvard. Dartmouth game to Ellen's friends (?), and my undetectable southern accent to future Southerners, namely VIRGINIANS.
I, Jane Cordingley, do leave after four years here at `Hamp my famous Harvard banners to anyone with a "friend" there, all the "Camels" in the world to Pat Stonington, the short, but infrequent trips to Keene to Sue Perry, and the wonders in Williston to any scientific underclassman who has the time to figure them out.
We, Elisabeth Cramer and Linda DeBarbieri, being at the moment of unsound minds and too sound bodies, leave our places in the senior class to Irene Lipski and Nancy Gillies with the hopes that they will have as much fun as we did, and our positions on the senior teams to Susie Cochrane and Heidi Ewing.
I, Sarah Crawford, leave my fur coat to Miss Continillo.
I, Ann Cummings, being of dubious mind and corpulent body, leave my squeekie doors to the future occupant of my room and my "organization" to any admirer of Debby Wickes.
I, Faith Damon, after having much thought on the subject, do hereby leave my "love and devotion" for "`Hamp" to Bonnie Cox, my fun and old stomping grounds to Izzy Griffin, Ellen Cordingley, Pat Stonington, Bonnie Cox, Winnie Worth, and Harriet Gaston, and with the consent of all, I'm sure, I leave.
I, Joan Durham, hereby leave to Kathy Nagamatsu the love and remembrance of all my schools; to all ambitious French III students, a hard but very rewarding and interesting year of French IV; and to Pat Stonington weekend and vacation train rides on the New York, New Haven, and Hartford!
I, Lolly Farrell, being of no mind and even more body, do hereby bequeath my blue eyes to Irene Lipski, the transportation problems to Pam Squires, gymnastics to Edith Nelson, and many fond memories of N.S.F.G.
I, Bonnie Finn, leave those "cheery" drives back from the games (they lost) to Edith Nelson, my faithfulness to Williston to Margie, and all the "best" Williston boys to their college choices! SNIFF!
I, Deanne Flouton, have nothing to leave, therefore I will leave the following: if anyone wants anything of mine God forbid they are welcome to it!
I, Ellen Goldberg, living in a state of complete disorganation, do hereby bequeath my famous dunga-
rees to the student council, unknown "phantasies" to Arlene Belsky, a book called "How to Stay out of Trouble" to Sally Greene, and to all underclassmen, "Happy Days" ahead.
I, Sue Hano, being of petite mind and changing hair do hereby leave Hirshberg's scale to Gay Thompson on the condition that she weighs herself at 7:00 EVERY morning, all Suffield boys to anyone who wants them, all cream-filled donuts to Kathy Nagamatsu.
I, Elaine Hirshberg, being in as chaotic a state of mind as ever, do leave my Princeton-Yale weekend to anyone who doesn't take chemistry. Harriet Gaston can have my place if she promises to sit on the Princeton side.
I, Katie Johnson, do hereby leave my Italian "pronunciation" to Lily Cram and that wonderful city of Syracuse, N. Y., to Dianne Knapp.
I, Anne Lauder, after careful consideration for the feelings of all, do hereby leave to Harriet Gaston, Ellen Cordingley, Izzy Griffin, and Winnie Worth, good luck . . . To Ellen, my talent of putting nail polish on in ten seconds, and to Izzy, my wonderful weekends at Brown.
I, Vicki MacNair, leave getting through each weekend to Sue Reeves.
I, Sally Mahoney, being of sound mind, leave all the joys and happiness of this memorable year to Sue Morse.
I, Sue Miller, leave my Spanish I & H book to Susan Reeves, charge of Hathaway House to Dianne Knapp and in behalf of my roommate, we would like to leave our double room to Nancy Gillies and Babs Barnett.
I, Cristina Moran, do hereby leave my private Spanish vocabulary to Sally Greene, and chemistry experiments to Carolyn Gopfert.
I, Laurie Reid, being of unscientific mind and too much body, do hereby give and bequeath my gm briefs to Tootie Hopkins, my love of Mr. Ladd (malgre tout) to anyone with the time to give him a full minute of (disillusioned) adoration per day, and my love of Latin to all prospective classicists.
I, Decie Rosapepe, do leave my room to anyone who feels anti-social, and my French grades to Kathy Nagamatsu.
I, Linda Russack, being out of my mind, to say nothing of my body, do hereby bequeath the unused handbooks of the senior class to Elmer to burn, and my ever-busy room to someone who desires no privacy.
I, Christine Staab, leave my English course to anyone who can understand it.
I, Sue Sturgis, being of unsound mind and body, do hereby leave my talent for languages and my NEAT room to Sue Reeves.
I, Janet Taylor, being of feeble mind and body full of calories, do leave the treasured fish to Gay Thompson and the mice in my closet to the person fortunate enough to get my room next year.

Without the unfailing patience and efficient guidance of Miss Carlson L'Ormeau would not be complete. Thus we feel that this is a fitting moment to extend to her our most grateful thanks for the help she has given us this past year.
We would also like to express our appreciation to the girls who did the great amount of typing which was necessary in the preparation of the yearbook.
The Music Club, this year under the able direction of the talented Miss Continillo, performed first at the Teachers' Convention at the Williamsburg House early in December, and a week later at the Christmas Concert, both times with the Williston Double Quartet. Not long ago, the Club, on invitation, sang at the Womens' Home here in Northampton.
Some of the songs we have sung include Benjamin Britten's "Ceremony of Carols", done with the quartet on both occasions, and on our own, "Oh come, Oh come Emmanuel" and "White Christmas", the latter specially arranged by Miss Continillo. We also sang carols at the Christmas Banquet held in the Hotel Northampton.
Seated: Miss Continillo. Standing, 1. to r.: V. MacNair, A. Higgins, D. Loughran, D. Wickes, E. Goldberg. S. Gleason, E. Hirshberg, J. Durham, H. Gaston, E. Nelson, A. Lauder, D. Flouton, S. Hano, H. Copper.
Hampsters, the school's informal singing group, carried out a new policy this year, in that it was composed only of senior girls. After rehearsal work in the "snake pit", the group sang at many school functions, including the thirty fifth birthday party of the school, and the Senior Prom. Many new songs were added to the repertoire of old favorites. In the spring, Middlers were chosen to carry on the group.

This year, under the guidance of Miss Whitaker, the Christian Association planned the Christmas Bazaat and the Banquet. The proceeds of the most successful Bazaar went to the Community Chest, and the gifts from the Banquet went to the unfortunate children of this area. The C.A. also supported other civic activities.
Throughout the year there were religious conferences with other schools, and speakers of different faiths talked to us during various Sunday evening Vespers.
Our new athletic department, directed by Miss Wellington, was aided in the planning and carrying out of its policies by the A.A. Board, comprised of the President, Molly Miller, a Secretary Treasurer, the Green and White Team captains, and representatives from each lower class. The board also performed its yearly tasks of raising money, morale, and interest in athletics. There w a s the traditional intramural competition, combined with many interscholastic meetings of the Basketball, Hockey, and Softball teams with nearby schools. Highlights of the fund raising campaign were the auction, and a contest in which the A.A. endeavored to find a "Campus King". The fund for the new gym was increased by a generous birthday present to the school from the student body, and various activities of the underclassmen.
The Student Council started the year with a tea given for the new girls and their parents. Later in September we had a picnic at Look Park.
The Snack Bar has been operating for the benefit of the gym fund. The Middlers have aided us in this project and have managed the Snack Bar periodically.
We would like to thank our Faculty Advisor Miss Carlson for her understanding and guidance.

The Snack Bar Committee is a new organization on campus as of last year. Its members opened the snack bar on Saturday nights in the basement of Hathaway House. We sold hotdogs and hamburgers to hoards of hungry and grateful girls. The money earned was placed in a fund to help build a new gym.
Seated: Cynthia Barrington-Chairman, Karen Almdale-Assistant.
Masque and Wig has spent a successful and enjoyable year. We spent the fall term and most of the winter term preparing for our first production, "Idiot's Delight" with the Williston Academy Dramatic Club. The school spirit was heightened considerably when we presented the four one-act plays, in competition in the spring term. This exciting year owes much to Mrs. Pearce, whose patience and guidance was given in all our activities.
Seated: L. Cohen, Mrs. Pearce, D. Carroll, President, A. Higgins, SecretaryTreasurer, C. Barrington, Stage Manager. Standing: L. Bartlett, D. Loughran, E. Goldberg, M.B. Adams. Missing: M. Miller, S. Gleason, N. Winthrop.
This year the staff of Pegasus strove to attain a new meridian. Among its accomplishments is "A Letter to the Editor" column, which was able to work smoothly and efficiently with correspondents not only from the student body, but also from people off campus interested in the school's welfare. The staff abolished the practice of issuing Pegasus purely as a literary effort, as last year's trial period with this proved extremely ineffective. Instead, in the spring term, it printed a bonus literary magazine. Pegasus is grateful to is faculty advisor, Mrs. Esty, for her guidance and aid.

The French Club started the year by attempting to learn and sing Christmas carols for the Bazaar. Later, French tables were formed and confused expressions, like "lait l'eau", were invented by thirsty students, while those less adept in the language found themselves involuntary dieters.
The entire school had the pleasure of hearing M. Hembrant show us slides of Versailles, Paris and Provence. French Club was fortunate in having people like Mme. Melat and Judy McCandliss who could relate to us their own experiences in France.
Seated, 1st Row: K. Nagamatsu, A. Higgins, L. Cram, M. B. Adams, H. Gaston. 2nd Row: K. Gordon, L Cohen, J. Durham, Secretary-Treasurer, Miss Bement, J. McCandliss, Vice-President, C. Balut, H. The Spanish Club is under the sponsorship of Miss Verges and the direction of Cristina Moran. The members enjoyed slides on Spain and undertook food sales. The year of activities was concluded with a Spanish banquet in May.

The "Hamp" Hockey team had great fun and good sportsmanship this fall. The team's skill improved with the season's games, as was exhibited in the last game with MacDuffie. We give our thanks to Miss Wellington and Miss McMoran.
Seated: K. Almdale, E. Gilman, M. Madeira, V. McNair, A. Lauder, W. Butler, C. Sherman. Standing: F. Damon, M. Miller, H. Ewing, J. Miller, L. Cram, E. Bartlett, I. Griffin, Z. Jacobi, G. Canterbury.
The basketball team of 1958, coached by by Miss McMoran, played some very exciting games this year with The Mary Burnham School and MacDuffie. The underclassman on the team showed a wonderful enthusiasm which should make for a successful team next year.
Seated: E. Gilman, E. Worth, J. Beauregard. Standing: H. Ewing, K. Almdale, M. Miller, I. Griffin, E. Bartlett, J. Cordingley, D. Flouton, and J. Smith.
With the help of Miss Haugabook and the Mount Holyoke Stables, our riding this year has improved. "Izzy" Griffin conducted the meetings while "Marty" O'Leary recorded the minutes. We hope next year to begin having horse shows, in which everyone will have a chance to compete. The Riding Club has met several times this year, and all of its members seem to be extremely interested in improving. As most of our members are underclassmen, we are looking forward to a better club next year.
Seated: M. Clem, S. Everets, M. Miller, A. Higgins, I. Griffin, President, M. O'Leary, Secretary Treasurer, K. Prendergast, M. Bowler. Standing: J. Smith, J. Miller, C. Wilheim, I. Barrett, J. Sibley, M. Thompson, E. Johnson, J. Cloud, M. Crow.
This year, the Soccer team has shown great enthusiasm under the direction of Miss Wellington and Miss McMoran. Unfortunately, it has experienced an inactive season. It did not play a game with other schools for one reason or another. The team's efforts should be acknowledged, though, and next year we hope that it will experience a very successful season.
Kneeling: M. Farrell, D. Carol!, L. Cohen, S. Perry, M. O'Leary. Standing: S. Everets, I. Barrett, E. Barrett, J. Cordingley, B. Finn, J. August, M. B. Adams.
The Glee Club, under the superb direction of Miss Continillo, who kept us all on our toes, will be remembered by the members for a long time. This year's Glee Club, composed of eighty girls, is the largest singing group the Northampton School For Girls has had. Our first appearance was the annual Christmas Concert and Dance with Williston in December. Thirty five girls had the privilege of participating in the Hartford Festival in April, singing Mendelssohn's "Hymn of Praise".
The final appearance of the Glee Club will be at Commencement.
