Mary Poppins left Number Seventeen, Cherry-Tree Lane when her job was finished.
And so she came back when she was Very Necessary. We bring her back now, not in a burst of stars or on an East Wind but in the pages of a book. The bindings and the pages are not important for they are only the bearer. It is Mary Poppins measuring us with her Very Special Measuring Tape and her "Crack" that is important. "The Crack is between the Old and the New. Inside, all things are as one. The stars bend down and touch the earth and the young and old forgive each other. Night and day meet here and so do the poles. The East leans over toward the West and the circle is complete. This is the time and the place, my darlings -the only time and the only place- wher.1 everybody lives happily ever after." This book is filled with memories of our own tiny "Crack" at Northampton. But now we must catch hold of Mary Poppins' coat-tails for we are again "Going Up . .
Mrs. Pearce has been our mother since Stronach days. She has dried our freshman tears and wiped up first floor when we let the tub overflow. She has coached us patiently in Christmas pageants and Williston Plays. Props, scenery and costumes are all under her hand along with Homer and Essex and predicate nominatives. Our problems have been solved by her advice and her motherly gestures have banished homesickness so often.
It is for these reasons and so many others that the class of 1952 dedicates its year book to Mrs. Pearce. She has helped us on our way --"Going Up".
Dear Girls of the Class of 1952:
How fast the years fly by! It seems such a short time ago that you were ninth graders and here it is, time for you to graduate. We are very grateful to you for all you have done for the school and for both of us personally. We will bid goodbye in a few days with real regret, knowing that somehow or other your class was unique and that there will never be another quite like you.
As Juniors, you were off for a fine start academically and have been able to pass on to those who have joined you through the years your enthusiasm and to have helped them develop their abilities to a high degree of success. Your loyalty and affection for the school has been marked. To make this a happier, more friendly place has been ever in your hearts and minds. To help the younger girls to understand and follow our customs has been the responsibility of each of you and has been carried through to real success.
The colleges to which you are all going should be proud of you not only as under-graduates but as alumnae. Be as enthusiastic for them and as loyal to them as you have been to your school, but in the wider, broader interests of college life do not forget us here. Our love and good wishes go with you.

"It was a long time ago," said Mary Poppins, in a brooding, story-telling voice. She paused, as though she were remembering events that happened hundreds of years before. Then she went on dreamily, still gazing into the middle of the room, but without seeing anything. "1 was a senior once. What a wonderful year it was. 1952. Remember....?" The old girls gave some plays the first week of school but they enjoyed their own show so much that they got the acts mixed up. Then the new girls came back to top it off the next week with a great success poking fun at everybody. And there were ping-pong balls to blow and clothes-pins to drop. Soon the classes were organized and class songs were written. School really got under way. There were delicious banquets and gooey spreads. Picnics on Monday helped us get acquainted and everybody got sick together on the Merry-Go-Round at Look Park. Hockey and Soccer seasons came sooner than we realized but it was a wonderful feeling
to return home from Burnham victorious. Then came "Shubert Alley" at the Little Theater. Before we knew it, it was "Christmas time again" and we were busy hunting for costumes for the Christmas banquet. The Waites sang and the Mummers' dragon refused to die. The pageant on Sunday night left us in a happy mood with carols running through our brains. Then it was vacation and we packed our cook-books and our other bazaar gifts and went home. We came back with bits of tinsel in our hair. Then came mid-years. The local sale of flashlight batteries increased by fifty per cent. But that ended and the ski week-end came along. Bandages and rubbing alchol became popular. Ukes, pianos, and a flute cheered us through this term. "You Can't Take It With You" topped off our holiday mood. Then Spring Fever hit. The decorations at the Student Council dance were the first signs of the disease. Then Spring Fever developed spots and all the underclassmen went home, leaving us to our college
boards. Remember the wonderful parade around Hathaway and the beautiful moon over the dike. We sang our Alma Mater and marched to study hall. Then came Saturday and poof-it was all over! We went home again with happier hearts.
It was glorious Spring term. That meant arms on the window sills and out-door gym. The campus was pink and green and unbelievably beautiful. The "Mikado" was a wonderful success although we didn't look completely oriental. Then there were those dances and what fun they were. The Prom was beautiful and Amherst played the music. That added interest. But it was a wonderful whirl and then my Senior Prom was over.
Soon it was time for graduation. Miss Wallis danced around the soccer field with the May Queen and her court and then rehearsals started for the parreant. There were the marching rehearsals and the last minute corrections to do and school music until there was no time left. The
May Queen held her court and the pageant was presented. Phoenix night came and went and was well worth the rehearsals and worries of the song leaders. The Baccalaureate Service left the Seniors teary and happy-sad. Then the Step Sing brought the Middlers up to fill the Senior class and we were alumnae. There were watermelon seeds that night and very little sleep. But who can forget the thrill of marching down Montgomery steps to "Pomp and Circumstance!" Then we were thanking Miss Whitaker and Miss Bement for our green leather diplomas. We sang the Alma Mater for the last time and ate Miss Pyle's buffet dinner on the lawn. The bags were packed, the cars were pulling away and the day was over. So was the year. There were last minute good-byes, tears, and hugs and away we went. Do you remember. .? Mary Poppins sat up with a little start. The intent look had gone from her eyes and the stillness from her body. Then she smiled. "Yes, I was a senior once," she said.
Mary Poppins smiled as we whisked along throughthe air. I held tight to my candy-cane horse.
"Where are we going, Mary?" I cried.
"Into the Future, Silly," she answered primly; "by way of the Rainbow--" and she swung her candy horse to the right.
There was Marilyn, sitting on a star. She told us that she was in partnership with Bachrach. Mary was very pleased to have her picture taken because she was wearing her new straw hat and knew she looked Very Handsome Indeed.
The next star was bouncing so gaily that I had trouble landing.
"What makes it jump so, Mary Poppins?" I asked.
"Look!" said Mary Poppins smugly. "Don't you remember?"
And there was Jo Milton, "perky" as ever, swaying at a purple piano bench and playing "September Song." There were six curly-headed angels singing with her. Each had a single feather in his halo. "Dartmouth," explained Mary. Suzy Heller and B.J. Weshpot floated by on a cloud. They were playing a very familiar tune and there was a silver banner puffing out behind announcing that they were "The Five Foot Two."
"We're playing at a party over the rainbow. Want to come along?" they called.
"0 please, Mary Poppins, let's go to the party," I begged. (Even Mary Poppins could not change my Outlook On Life.)
Just as I started to follow the banner, Sue Mellor appeared, quite heavily laden with books. Jo explained that Sue taught Chardenal to the angels, with Kate Gregg as an assistant.
"0," I said; and we started on our way again.
Whoo-o-oosh. There goes Peggy in her green Ford and Leila is trying to climb in the window.
"I suppose she was late," I said meekly.
"Humph," sniffed Mary. "Leila's mother has been waiting forty-five minutes".
"You going to the party?" called Peggy, as the car turned around a cloud.
"I--".. .but it was too late, and they had already gone.
"Br-r-r-ring!"
"Here we are at the Milky Way," said Mary Poppins. "See that girl over there? She's the official bell-ringer. Very important job."
"Why it looks like Marge Hampson...my gosh, it is!!"
Just as I started to ride over to the bell tower I heard an unmistakable New Bedford accent crying, "Twenty-five cents! Only twenty-five cents for this amazing offer. These cook-books are the original--0, hello there! Nice to see you again. Going to the party?-- Twenty-five cents, that's all they are. ."
In the booth next to Anne's was Kate Horton, the world-famous juggler. The sign said that she was the only woman in the world who could juggle seven coke bottles at a time. Anne Hopkins was in the middle of the midway, dancing brightly on her toes. She waved as we passed but her audience was clamoring for an encore so we could not talk. We could hear the music as we pushed on.
"It sounds like Ethel," I whispered.
"'Tis," answered Mary Poppins importantly. "She was a professor at Cornell but got bored. Now she is a wandering minstrel and having a wonderful time. But hurry, Slowpoke! Here we are only at the Rainbow."
"There's Sally Smith and Birgit doing the herring-bone up the Rainbow!" I shouted with surprise.
"And they have Olympic uniforms on, toot And there's Joan and what's that she's pulling up after her? Why, it's Lu-Lu, how sweet -- and they both have red flannel nightgowns on!"
"Yes, of course; didn't you know?" snapped Mary. "She designs them especially for pigs and their owners." "0," I said again.
Sally Jo was sliding down the other side of the Rainbow with her skis over her shoulder. She waved as we flew over, and I remembered Hogback and thought how little everything had changed.
"We're almost there!" said Mary. "It's just around the corner, in the Future!'
And as soon as she said that, there appeared a big door ahead of us saying in Star Dust letters a foot high, THE FUTURE.
I fell off my candy horse I was so anxious to join the party. Nancy Hicks greeted us at the door. She was smiling happily so I knew it was a Very Good Party Indeed. "The Five Foot Two" had been joined by Lane Upton and her flute and the music was really hot. Janice Swindell and Ginny van den Toorn were singing a duet (a piece from one of their Met successes) but Ginny was confusing everyone by singing in Dutch. There were screams of laughter from one corner. In fact, it sounded like old third floor. And there was Franny in the middle of the crowd with a stocking over her head, telling jokes backwards. Darleen was covering Betsy Baxter up with a bit of moon-ray.
"The poor kid's exhausted. Her car broke down in Greenfield and she had to carry it the rest of the way. Poor Betsy," she cooed. "Did I tell you I sold my last name to Ajax, who has opened a super-special beauty parlor in Northampton. The name is Ajax Andre.(French, you know.) And Vicki is posing for Walt Disney since Bugs Bunny died. She is also opening in New York tomorrow. You know, the Cornelia Otis Skinner sort of thing. Oh, and did you know that Jean Young is in Alaska on an experiment. She's teaching Eskimos to make chili!! And..."
Katsy Cole dragged me away.
"You must play with us. It's a new game I picked up in France on my last trip. It's like The Game, only it's..."
"Your sandwich bill has been quadrupled!"
Meredith rushed around the cloud toward me just in time to bump into Jean Willse who was carrying a pile of books from her publishing house. Plop! Plop! The books fell in every direction, even on pour Ellie, who was wrapped up in her Chinese kimona and writing a very special letter.
"Come," said Mary Poppins, "it's time for lights-out."
"But-- but I haven't.. ."
"Nonsense."
"Good night! Good-bye! See you around the. ..Hey, hey, Good-Look--. . .party, party. ." The sounds drifted away behind us. Mary smiled. Our candy horses flew higher and higher and higher. ..
"Do you know how to write a Will, Mary Poppins?" we asked very timidly.
Mary Poppins turned round and glared at us.
"Of course I do. I am a Very Clever Person."
And we watched very quietly as she began to write,"We hereby declare. • •••

udent Council proved a strong link between Faculty and Students, airing grievances from both sides. Everything from the "cookie situation" to extra Friday weekends was discussed - and the 4:30 study hall bell often ignored. In addition, Tuesday morning Prayers each week was led by two Council members.
The purchase of the Angelus Bell for the school was the big project of the year. The Councils combined their efforts on this, sponsoring an Open House in November, and a dance in February.

The important event for the Christian Association was the Christmas Bazaar. Squeezed in among the eaves were needlework and jewelry, homemade cookies and cakes, and those allimportant cookbooks. From these proceeds, a large pledge was donated to the Community Chest, who in turn presented a small "Oscarette" to the school for outstanding contribution. Representatives attended religious conferences at Miss Porter's School in November, and at the Ethel Walker School in February.
The Athletic Association, with the assistance of Miss Wallis and Miss Vezina, planned the school sports program and arrunged meets with other schools. In January, it sponsored a toboganning party on the dyke. In addition to buying new sports equipment and athletic awards, A.A. donated a large slice from its treasury toward the purchasing of the Angelus Bell.

After Christmas vacation, the basketball team began practicing at the Y.M.C.A. each Monday morning with Miss Vezina coaching on basic rules. In February, a game with Burnham was held, and in March, the MacDuffie team was played. Both times the team played with spirit, but was handicapped by illness and little practice.

This small but enthusiastic organization was far more active than in previous years. Using the Smith College Stables, they went on breakfast rides and sleighrides. The Arcadia Sanctuary offered wooded trails where the riders were frequently seen. In the Tr -School Horse Show sponsored by the StonleighProspect School in November, Northampton took one first prize and five other honors.

Many braved the tank suits and chlorine to swim at the Smith pool on Friday afternoons during the winter term. They were well rewarded by Miss Todd's patient coaching in diving, stroke form, and even the proper use of rubber duck fins. A Green-White meet was planned for the Spring.
In November, at the High School Little Theater, Masque and Wig put on "Schubert Alley," the career story of Chris Holt. The March joint production with Williston Academy was "You Can't Take It With You," a comedy by Moss Hart and George Kaufmann. After spring vacation a reading for an assembly period was planned.

The Modern Dance Club met Monday mornings at ten for an hour. Basic techniques were learned, and different note and floor patterns in choreography were introduced by Miss Vezina. Splinters were forgotten as the tom-tom and victrola helped to kindle imaginative ideas.

Early in the fall or late in the spring, the Music Club, made up of girls from all classes, could be heard practicing in Montgomery or the gym. To form a program which would fit many engagements in and around Northampton, all types of songs were learned - religious numbers, semi-classical, and "old favorites." In December, a Christmas concert was presented with Williston, and in May, the "Mikado" was given.

The Art Club began its activities early in the fall by making Christmas cards to sell at the Bazaar. Trips were made to the Smith and Amherst College museums. In March, the club visited the Eaton Paper Company plant in Pittsfield and saw the various processes uses in making stationery. Posters were made to advertise plays and sales throughout the year.
El Club EspAol planned a PiIita Party sporadically, but somehow the bit of pottery was never sent for. Nevertheless, other activities more than made up for this. After the Halloween party, Spanish records and songs from Smith were learned. A Chile spread was held in February, and short skits planned for April.

Miss Bement and the club compared French magazines American ones, listened to French records of modern music, and in December learned some of the traditional carols for the Christmas assembly. In February, Miss Goding told of her year in Bordeaux. Upon one occasion, Prayers were held in French. with
The Current Events Club met about every two weeks to discuss news of particular interest-ranging everywhere from the Ku Klux Klan to the formation of the United Nations. At times, topics prepared by individual members were presented to the club and usually followed by a heated discussion of the "pros and cons" of the argument.

Remember - the Monday trips in the station wagon to Mrs. Judd's, and the peanut-butter-and-pickle sandwiches she served with the tea? Pieces containing everything from the melancholy mood to the sarcastic satire were relived as they were read aloud, and helpful criticism offered to the hopeful writers.

The most important addition to Pegasus, besides its many new staff members, was a room in Lee basement to be used as staff room. In September, the walls were painted, curtdins hung, and furniture scavaged from the dorm attics. It was here that the staff did most of their work: planning, rewriting, and making up the dummy.
The paper, itself, was issued eight times during the yearalternating large issues with small ones.

Scurrying around in search of material kept the Yearbook Staff very busy - meetings in Meredith's room, trips to the drugstore with film, and typing in Hathaway basement. With the help of their advisors, the Staff completed their work and met the spring vacation deadline.

When we've put long years behind us, And our girlhood days are o'er, Let there be some class to greet us, When we come back to thy door. Friendship's ties that cannot sever, Though our ways be far apart, Hold thee in our hearts forever, 'Twas from thee we made our start.
Thou it was who reared and taught us, Sent us out Jpon life's way. And to thee we'll e'er be grateful, Though we've been long years away. Now to thee our tribute raises; We'll be with thee to the end, And we'll always sing thy praises, Alma Mater, School and Friend.
