I am Professor Emeritus of the ETSAM, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, where I have taught for over 40 years. I am well aware of the level and quality of the students, and I must say that I am impressed with William´s academic standards. He is a leader in the school, challenging himself by taking various courses that expose him to different methodologies and approaches.

In addition, I have known William for the last three years. He has worked with MQ Architecture online during the school year and then in the NY studio in the summers. Together with Miguel Quismondo, we have designed the Robert Olnick Pavillion for the Magazzino Art Museum in the state of NY, and William has been collaborating enthusiastically with the team during this period. William works well in a team, he is collaborative, engaging, and responsible. He meets deadlines and consistently surpasses expectations.

His interest in Architecture and its future led him to organize a meeting at the United Nations where I presented a conference, “I want to be an Architect” for future students. The event was well orchestrated and attended by William, showcasing his ability to communicate his enthusiasm and interest in the matter. William also has a strong interest in photography, he captures buildings for their features and context, helping to transmit the architect's point of view.

I have no doubt that William will contribute to the student body of your university and, at the same time learn from this experience. He is well-traveled and very open to new adventures.

To whom it may concern, I am very pleased to contribute to William Mulvihill’s scholarship application with this letter of recommendation.

I run a small “design-build” practice in New York focused on high end projects.

Back in 2021 I received the visit of a young architecture student who was interested in learning how I graduate from the Architecture School of Madrid ends up opening a Studio across the pond. Soon after I offered him to work for MQ Architecture as an intern. He started helping me with the Social Media tasks, but I realized he had the intelligence and ability to grow fast and a few months later he was organizing communication strategies and reaching out to media outlets. In addition, he has a natural talent for photography. He recently took professional photographs of our latest Museum in NY, and his work has been already published in over 30 international magazines and internet sites.

I also have the luck of having him work in the office during the summer. This being his second year I can recognize the growth and maturity level he has gained. He is already able to hold meetings with clients and understands the complexity of permitting as he has dealt with Building Department sand Civil engineer consultants. As a team member, he has integrated easily and has a fantastic collaborative attitude. He takes ownership of his work and is receptive to other peer’s contributions.

He has traveled extensively, pursuing his interest in architecture, art, and nature.

His vision is very multicultural, as he is always eager to learn and integrate his experiences. In particular, he spent his last semester in Seoul at SSSSS University (SSK University), where he took full advantage of the teachings and also exhibited his architectural photography at the university.

From a human standpoint, William is honest, positive, hardworking, humble and capable of handling stress. He is used to international environments (such as the one in my office) and is fluent in English and Spanish. PLASTIC PARIA

Nomadic recycling fleet Studio VIII Studio VI ETSAM // Madrid (Spain) with honors

The Paria Peninsula in Venezuela, known for its fishing heritage and cocoa production, is currently facing a growing invasion of plastics on its beaches and coastline.

This is a scarcely documented territory of 2438 square kilometres, so students from the Central University of Caracas and locals from the Venezuelan coast were contacted to discover that plastic pollution also affects the precariousness of local fleets and ports, causing waste of fish and deterioration of infrastructures. Nine ports of interest are identified and an inventory of abandoned equipment is drawn up, which will be used to build the whole system of action.

Plastic Paria acts as a nomadic fleet that collects, processes and exploits ocean plastics. From the strategic port of Güiria, mobile collection, storage and compaction vessels are launched. The plastics dispersed in the oceans are compacted into useful islands that become the basis for static and non-floating stations. The fleet uses cranes and storage modules, the latter acting as functional capacitors and main elements of the system.

Communication between halls and stations is achieved by a network of mobile walkways with three levels of communication, for pedestrians, for plastics and for suspended freight wagons. To guarantee the energy autonomy of the system, gravity-based storage is used, compacted plastic blocks are lifted with tidal energy and then dropped when tidal energy is required again. The remaining part of the plastic is used to print system components and a series of technicized buoys that monitor the presence of plastic in the oceans and thus forecast the future areas of operation of the fleet.

TOWER IN TEHERAN-RO

High-rise development in Seoul (South Korea) Studio VII SKKU University // Suwon (South Korea) with honors

Responding to the need of a new high-rise office building located on Teheran-ro, Gangnam Seoul.

Inspired by the complex buildings of Madrid from the late 1960s, the project focuses on incorporating a cantilever structure system.

By decentralizing the core and creating a sunken plaza on the ground fl oor, the design optimizes space utilization and provides an engaging outdoor area for occupants.

The building’s façade features an effi cient paneled design that articulates the entire structure. The integration of the cantilever system is highlighted, showcasing the complexity of the slab union with suspenders and adding a sense of verticality to the building. The use of light materials and textures enhances the openness of the building, creating a visually appealing and inviting atmosphere for office occupants.

The architectural project aims to create a high-rise offi ce building that combines careful atention to details with innovative structural systems.

The design intends to provide a modern, functional, and visually striking workplace environment that promotes productivity and collaboration.

HAUS DER STATISTIK RECYCLING PLANT TEXTIL LOGISTICS AND SALVATION Studio VI ETSAM // Madrid (Spain)

Near Alexanderplatz, Haus der Statistik, a building complex in Berlin from 1968, is currently being renovated in a very generic and conventional manner. This is being done without taking into consideration the communities that have called this place home for the past decade.

These “pioneers” have been using this space to create workshops, artist studios, and various activities. Therefore, this project aims to rethink the current masterplan and propose a new one.

Incentivized by the government, the people of Berlin are using the subway line as a method to deposit old clothing and fabrics that will be transported via subway line 5 to the Haus der Statistik. Once the clothing is there, the “pioneers” will utilize and recycle it, giving it a second life in the form of fiber, acoustic, and thermal panel insulation or even as a young student’s “new pair of cool jeans”.

This procedure must be backed up with an intricate logistics program for sorting and, especially when scaled up, and for storage.

Creating a symbol in the city, making the building a symbol as Robert Venturi would have acknowledged, we use a system of facade storage that allows the building to shift facades constantly. Becoming an icon, this new “Haus der Textilistik” will attract the people of Berlin, creating a dense environment where commerce and community will thrive.

Speculating towards aa self productive ecosystem that keeps evolving by being in a constant state of change and construction.
